Speaker 1: NFL Covers Zero with Matt Jones and Drew Franklin is a production of the NFL and iHeart podcast. Welcome everybody to NFL Cover zero, the post Draft edition. I'm Matt Jones, my coelos, Drew Franklin still on paternity leave. He had a baby. Everybody say hi. I think it was her first NFL draft, and Avery Rose was excited. She was not a fan of what the Jaguars did in the draft, but otherwise, from what I understand, she enjoyed the process. So Billy our Sports is joining me and we're going to go over all things draft. You know. Now, we're doing this on a Wednesday, so at this point most people have already given their grades and their winners and losers, so we're going to do a little bit of that, but we're also going to focus on some of the storylines of the draft, some of the interesting things that happened, some of what you may not be aware of. I enjoyed the draft. It had a lot of players. I didn't know most of them. But you know, now, it's on three different channels, that's right, three different broadcast You have ABC, which is the one kind of for women and families. ESPN kind of the one for just the average football fan, and I think the NFL Draft the NFL networks kind of a hardcore draft fan. Which one do you perform?

00:01:33
Speaker 2: Well, we talked about this a couple episodes ago. I mentioned I would watch the ABC.

00:01:37
Speaker 1: Broadcast because you want to know about people's families.

00:01:40
Speaker 2: Well, I kind of lied to you because I watched college game day before the draft started and that was enough ABC and backstories for me. So I ended up watching most of the ESPN one.

00:01:49
Speaker 1: I think the ESPN one is a good balance. You get mel Kiper, right, you get some fun interviews, but you also get a little football. It's not too nerdy. Booger is on it. So I like the I've I'm kind of partial to the ESPN one.

00:02:08
Speaker 2: It doesn't feel right when mel Kuiper's not on your screen.

00:02:11
Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, he created this whole thing. He should be in the Hall of Fame. He created the whole idea of the Draft as a television spectacle was created by mel Kiper.

00:02:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's an interesting dude. All the pumpkin pie that he eats and you know.

00:02:24
Speaker 1: This, he's been doing it for This is his forty six draft? Is that right? Forty six stress?

00:02:28
Speaker 3: And he's also got a stack of papers on in front of him. They don't let him talk a lot. You notice he talks more as the days go on. So day one he doesn't get a lot of it because I think these players are popular enough everybody. When you get to day three, none of them have anything to say. So that is when he's talking. He in field yates and that they're like, okay, now we're gonna be even preclude people who actually know about this, and that's when he feels timed.

00:02:53
Speaker 1: Well.

00:02:53
Speaker 2: When Mel talks, you listen too, And didn't you host like day three coverage of a draft one year?

00:02:59
Speaker 1: They well, they I thought I was going to. So they told me on ESPN Radio two or three years ago that I was up for consideration for because Chris Carlin does day one and two, and they were like, we may have you do day three, which I thought, I'm going to have to research only day three guys, right, And then Carlin decided he wanted to do it, so I didn't have to do it. But I was not going to have a binder of Day three guys.

00:03:27
Speaker 2: Oh you'd have to you'd have to have a big stack of papers like mel kiper up there to know that.

00:03:31
Speaker 1: But I didn't do it. So let's talk. Let's go first over the top ten picks. The number one pick was Mendoza. Uh, he stayed home, he went to the Raiders. Did you think it was bad that the number one pick wasn't there? Did lose a little anti was making an anti climact? Yeah, a little bit.

00:03:51
Speaker 2: I like to see the bear hug they give Roger Goodell when they come out and hold the jersey.

00:03:55
Speaker 1: But hug's too long. What Roger does Roger Goodell? I mean, I know he's like our boss, but Roger like one and a half seconds less per hug.

00:04:04
Speaker 2: Well, yeah, hey, I mean everybody's got a little different right there. You can dap up some guys.

00:04:08
Speaker 1: They's hugging now, there's no dapping. It's all hugs. Everyone gives and they hug him like he's their uncle they haven't seen in a long time. It's a it's it is a loved hug. Oh.

00:04:20
Speaker 2: They're fulfilling their dreams. So is your dream to hug Roger Goodell? If I was a prospect, yes, to make the NFL, that would be achieving a dream.

00:04:28
Speaker 1: I think they should. I think they should hug everyone they see. What do you think about? When they walked out, they would hold the hat up and they look in the mirror and they'd have to like go, what was up? Was up? Baby? What did you did you like that? Oh? It was so corny.

00:04:42
Speaker 2: I actually liked the Bucks player who was drafted at fifteen Bain who didn't do it.

00:04:46
Speaker 1: He grabbed the hat and just kept warm. He didn't look in the mirror and go. He was all business. Okay, he's because he's probably little short arms couldn't reach that. That's the knockout too. I love I learned this about people, like there's no event where you're allowed to scrutinize individual parts of a human being's looks. Because I remember many years it was like can he Pickett has? And this time it was like Ruben Bates small? And I didn't. I feel like, I feel weird making fun of someone's arm.

00:05:17
Speaker 2: How can you succeed if you have arms that are an inch shorter than one.

00:05:21
Speaker 1: Because they're gonna reach, they're gonna reach past you, You're gonna be able to hold you. They're gonna expect your arms are here. But your arms are loose, short, and so you're gonna be able to I think it'll work. You did that voice.

00:05:32
Speaker 2: I imagine t rex arms trying to rest the pass, you rushing the quarterback.

00:05:41
Speaker 1: Sorry, I don't know if it's exactly. Where did he go? Tampa? Tampa? Yeah, he went to your team. So what do you think about You're gonna have like a little shorter I love it. I am all in. They had a great draft.

00:05:51
Speaker 2: They got two Miami defenders and a good receiver from Georgia State.

00:05:54
Speaker 1: I hope one of them has regular size arms hands, because I know one of them does not. So so, yeah, they do the thing where they look in the mirror. Guys like Mario that have reds the hat never fits on their head. Is there not a way to get a hat for them that's a bigger size, open because it always just sits there and that looks like a comic book. Can we not find a way? Maybe it open back? Yeah, open back might be the way to go.

00:06:22
Speaker 2: There's also people that are at home that have thirty two.

00:06:25
Speaker 4: Hats in front of them, always fascinated by that.

00:06:28
Speaker 1: So does the NFL send them thirty two hats? I don't know. Do you think because douse they do have thirty two hats, they can't go to lids? First of all, i'd be a lot of money if you paid thirty five. You'd be spending one thousand dollars on hats.

00:06:43
Speaker 2: So you're returning thirty one of them, right?

00:06:46
Speaker 1: You think lids just just walk in here's the ones I didn't get. Yeah, exactly. I think the NFL, you knows as an NFL show on the NFL radio network, so we should figure it out. I think the NFL probably sends them all thirty two hats.

00:07:02
Speaker 2: They have the capital too.

00:07:04
Speaker 1: I can imagine if they send them all at then they put the one on. Then my question for you having the other thirty one, do you think the family members just each grab one on the way out keepsake of the team you didn't get here is who didn't draft Ruben bain Well?

00:07:18
Speaker 2: Those Super Bowl shirts get sent to Africa right a lot of time.

00:07:22
Speaker 1: Dude, But this is a little different because they see this is only thirty one of them. I think the other people at the house at the house do it, but I do like when they have all thirty two on there. I learned something in this draft what's up? Did you know? The draft picks are in way before we hear about them, not just leak they're in. Sometimes they're in for like five or six minutes. See.

00:07:46
Speaker 2: I don't like that, Like you're killing the like the whole illusion.

00:07:49
Speaker 1: Of the draft, because I remember at one point this was like in the later in the first round. Let's say it was a twenty second pick, they were announcing it, and the twenty fourth pick was like already in. So it's it's we're kind of seeing it a little bit on like a TV delay.

00:08:05
Speaker 2: Well, and so it's not like Draft Day where they're calling up until the zeros are on the car.

00:08:09
Speaker 1: I think they're on the zeros, but the clock is different than what we're seeing. Okay, what we're seeing on television. I think now that it goes faster, it happens even more. But anyway, I mean those it goes first, yeah, who? And then second was David Bailey's.

00:08:26
Speaker 2: That's right to the Jets, which welled Beetle, which we correctly mocked.

00:08:30
Speaker 1: We're two for two on our picks, so we did do a mock. How many total did we get? Correct? We got five of the select How did that compare with everyone else.

00:08:42
Speaker 2: Well, I actually didn't check the other mocks.

00:08:44
Speaker 1: Why we did for you to check, but so you didn't bother to know.

00:08:48
Speaker 2: I checked our mock to see how closer we were at You didn't five.

00:08:52
Speaker 1: The point was to compare us to the experts.

00:08:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm sure mel got probably more than five.

00:08:57
Speaker 1: We uh, we did. So we got we got the first two we did. What else did we get right?

00:09:03
Speaker 2: We got Vega ya Wanna, the guard from Penn State going fourteenth overall to the Ravens.

00:09:09
Speaker 1: I think I picked that one. You might have. I saw that he had had good, normal arms. What is the thing that? Again? There was a phrase I'd never heard, big thirty interview or something. You can bring thirty players to your stadium. Did you know? Now? I didn't know this. I assume this is a rule. I think every team can choose thirty guys to bring. And I think they call him your your big thirty, your big thirty, or your fast thirty, or your sexy thirty. And I think that guy was one of the Ravens big thirty. What else did we get right? Well, that would make sense.

00:09:47
Speaker 2: We also picked correctly the twenty first selection pitt offensive lineman max E Honachor the go in Arizona state.

00:09:57
Speaker 1: He went to Pittsburgh. Yes, he went to Pittsburgh. I think I kind of knew that. I'd talk to people in the crowd.

00:10:03
Speaker 2: Oh, there's actually a lot of drama with that Pitsburg pick.

00:10:06
Speaker 1: Maybe we'll get into that a little bit later. Oh, you'renna getting the later, okay? And what was the fifth one?

00:10:09
Speaker 2: We and the fifth one was Price, the running back, the second string running back for Notre Dame signed with the Seahawks.

00:10:16
Speaker 1: I remember saying that at the end. Yes, okay, so you had the odds. I had the events because I do remember saying Jamiri on Price with Seattle. So five out of thirty two, that's not very good.

00:10:25
Speaker 2: No, no, So there maybe is some method to the madness.

00:10:29
Speaker 1: We don't know how what the other people got because you didn't look. I didn't check. Unfortunately. Yeah, hiight. So David Bailey went second. That was nice. And then the third is where it started to get shaken up, right, because Arizona picked Jeremiah Love. Did you like that pick? No?

00:10:43
Speaker 2: I didn't, but I guess I understand it because they need playmakers, they need somebody over there to make some plays. I mean, Marvin Harrison Junior can't do it by himself. I just think that they're a long way away from being in contention drafting a running back this high.

00:10:56
Speaker 1: So that's become a thing. Everyone just says, you can't pick a running back high. Right? Is it that you can't pick a running back high? Or you can't pick the wrong running back high? Sink one Barkley was worth it, that's true, but you know other guys haven't been. I just I don't know, I don't It has become almost a mantra. Now, you can't pick a running back high. But that good that guy Jeremiah loves apparently supposed to be so good. If you think he's good enough, what difference does it make if the guy seven picks him?

00:11:29
Speaker 2: Well, I get I guess there's a thought that they don't have a roster that's ready to make the playoffs right now.

00:11:34
Speaker 1: So you think it's just bad because Arizona picked him, But there would be teams at three that maybe could pick correct.

00:11:40
Speaker 2: I think you look at the shorter shelf life of a running back.

00:11:44
Speaker 1: That's true, But how many of these guys. I always hear about that too. How many of these guys ended up playing besides quarterbacks? How many of these guys end up playing more than six years for their team anyway? Like any position? Yeah, I mean besides quarterback. Most guys go to multiple teams over their career. Right, So I've never understood that either, like this idea that you need to you know, they're in basketball sometimes ago he's twenty two. Well, yeah, but most guys in the NBA have played for ten.

00:12:11
Speaker 2: Teams, right, Like, maybe there's a guy that's twenty five that you might have concerns about.

00:12:16
Speaker 1: Yes, the lines in the NFL draft, because I don't think anybody would have thought it was wrong for the Chiefs to pick him at nine. But the Chefs are ready to win. So that's really what your issue is. The issue is not picking the running back to heights that the Cardinals are not ready to win.

00:12:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, and most teams that are drafting higher in the draft have worst rosters, so eventually you're naturally you do say, if you're in the top five, you probably shouldn't draft a skill position guy like that.

00:12:41
Speaker 1: Well, the Titans picked Carneal Tate. I didn't like this. That was a reach. I don't like it because I don't think I mean, Cardinal Tait was not the best wide receiver on his team. So if Carnal Tait is not the best wide receiver on his team, you're going to pick him fourth in the draft. That's and the number one receiver in the draft.

00:12:59
Speaker 2: That's Drew's Baby's getting used to Titan's life here. Pretty early on in the first Druss.

00:13:04
Speaker 1: He is like a I don't want to say he's a position receiver, but he's not. He doesn't have crazy athletic ability. I just think he's not who you want if you're the Titans, He's not who you wanted. The fourth pick also because the guy I think that goes next, rvel Reese, yes, is there and could be a game.

00:13:21
Speaker 2: Change again, and when your roster is that bear, if you could get a pass rusher like rvel Reese, that could completely change things on one side of the ball. Instead you get Cam warre At, a weapon. But also you know how set up is Cam to have success even with that guy.

00:13:35
Speaker 1: So and then so fifth pick was Rveil to the Giants. I like that for them, they only picked the line like they're gonna have fifteen people on their defensive line. They're goodding. Every other position doesn't matter. Well, Rvel had a funny moment.

00:13:51
Speaker 2: He went to the podium and they asked, yeah, so who are you excited to play with?

00:13:54
Speaker 1: On the Giants.

00:13:55
Speaker 2: Took a good ten to twelve seconds to say, h Jackson Dart.

00:13:59
Speaker 1: Now, yeah, that's kind of mean of him, though, because how's he supposed to know his teammates hasn't met him yet?

00:14:06
Speaker 2: I think you would know. I mean, who's in the NFL more than just the one quarterback?

00:14:12
Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's sorry, let's let me don't test me. Hold on, let me's if he thinks he's so great, let me test him. All right, you have just been picked by the Arizona Cardinals. Oh boy, who are you excited to play with?

00:14:27
Speaker 2: Jeremiah Well, Marvin Harrison Junior watched his dad play a lot, loved him.

00:14:32
Speaker 1: How did you watch his dad? You weren't born. I've seen highlights on YouTube. Okay, but yeah.

00:14:40
Speaker 2: Coach Gannon, I'm excited to be here. Okay, you know all the great Arizona lineage, like Trey McBrien, You say, coach Gannon, Yeah, see that's who Jonathan Gannon, the Arizona Cardinals head coach.

00:14:56
Speaker 1: I thought he got fired. Maybe he did that. I'm really interesting he did, isn't it. Kubiak? Let's see Kubiak? I thought was the Raiders. Oh you're right here, right, you're right. Sorry, I get all those teams down there. So you got me worried. I don't even know the coach in front of me, right, I know what this is? What an interviewer does. Put you on the hospital. Ray McBride probably the best tight end in Okay. So you're excited about playing with Trademer. Of course, all right? Who went six? Number six was let's see right here, it was a trade.

00:15:37
Speaker 2: The Chiefs traded up to pick Lsu corner mansor Delaney.

00:15:42
Speaker 1: I didn't understand that one either. Delaney's very good, but all projections suggested they could get him at nine. Right now, That may mean the Chiefs may have known something we didn't know, like that the team at seven or eight was going to pick him. Seems like a reach, But again I guess partially you would say, well, if you were going to get him at nine, it's not crazy to get him at six. They had a bunch of picks giving up ones probably not the worst thing in the world, so they clearly liked him, and we'll see what happens.

00:16:10
Speaker 2: I believe they've had a lot of turnover at the secondary, so just getting some new blood in there. I thought for sure they'd go receiver and give them a home some help.

00:16:17
Speaker 1: But looks like there aren't any great there weren't great ones. The only one you could take there, I guess, is the kid from Arizona State. And I think you give everybody on the LSU last year a pass because it was such a disaster with Brian Keilly. Yeah, I mean, like Garrett Nusmayer not going to what the seventh round. That's hard. That's hard for me to understand because to the chiefs, well there you go. Maybe they just want to give everybody from LSU. LSU was such a train wreck and they've consistently produced such NFL stars that I feel like you just give him a pass because he was awful. I can't believe Nsmeyer went in the seventh round. I mean that dude was protected the number one picking the draft.

00:16:58
Speaker 2: It was a couple of years ago from grace for him and a lot of quarterbacks, which we'll get but I but, I mean they picked a dude from Ruggers before him.

00:17:06
Speaker 1: I didn't understand that, Chiefs. I mean, he's not gonna play ahead of my homes, but I guess gott to have a backup option. Got to have a backup, all right, what's uh? What was next?

00:17:15
Speaker 2: It was Sonny Styles, the Ohio State linebacker, going to the Commander's at seven.

00:17:20
Speaker 1: That seemed like the steal of the draft to me. Yeah. I mean, if you just watch college football, you would think Sunny Styles was the best player. To me, without breaking stuff down, I would have taken Sunny Styles over anybody. And so if you're the Commanders you get him at seven, you gotta feel like sun shines bride on your old commander at home, an old.

00:17:44
Speaker 2: DC, which where the next draft will be will be Washington d C.

00:17:48
Speaker 1: By the way.

00:17:48
Speaker 2: Okay, but yeah, I think the immediately immediate starter, impact player for them. They could not be happier with getting him at seven.

00:17:55
Speaker 1: I think that that's the best break. Every year, some team six to twelve just gets something falling to them. That's that's great, And I think that's what the Commander's gap. What was it?

00:18:07
Speaker 2: It was the Saints picking Jordan Tyson, the receiver from Arizona State, so Tyler Shuck will have a weapon down in New Orleans.

00:18:14
Speaker 1: That's probably the top ten pick I'm the most skeptical of is Jordan Tyson. You know he's at Arizona State. I think receivers are really hard to judge if their quarterback wasn't great mm hm. But you know, elite athlete, we'll see. I mean, that's definitely a will see. That's the one. If you were to say to me of the top ten, what's the most likely just bus potential, I'm probably going to say eight there with.

00:18:40
Speaker 2: Jordan tis Well, especially with some great linemen still on the board at that pick.

00:18:44
Speaker 1: And I would have loved to have seen him, like you said, go to the Chiefs at nine, because I know he would work there because everybody works there.

00:18:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, what's not It was the Browns who picked the Utah lineman, Spencer Fano, offensive tackle.

00:18:58
Speaker 1: There's a lot of guys from Utah that went. I mean, I can't actlick I know anything about.

00:19:04
Speaker 2: It, if any details of it. Spencer fan I'm sure he's a good fit. And you named the Browns head coach.

00:19:09
Speaker 1: Okay, then we don't have to get any of all this orright, what's your tenth pin.

00:19:12
Speaker 2: It's Todd Munkin, by the way, I like, and then Francis mouye Aga is the Miami offensive tackle. They got picked tenth by the Giants.

00:19:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a bunch that when they have this was a record amount of offensive tackles. Didn't they have? What nine go? Ten go in the first round? That's a lot, It was a lot. I think I think it was the record for most for most win. I remember hearing I think Todd mcshaye say they were all going to go in the first round, because once you got past number nine or whatever, there's a massive drop off like seven or eight. Yeah, there was a massive drop off after that in twent.

00:19:47
Speaker 2: This is I mean, Giants couldn't have asked for anything better. They trade Dexter Lawrence, they get the tenth pick, and they're able to get Rvel Reese and now this guy to really rebuild their offensive defensive line.

00:19:58
Speaker 1: So I think it worked out for him. All right, so those are the top ten picks. Now, you said in addition that you had ten storylines that you were following in the draft. Yeah, like that. I like to know what Billy's following in the draft. It's always it's always good. It's always it's always good to know.

00:20:12
Speaker 2: Well, it's it's the news here on NFL cover zero. And these are not all storylines, just tidbits things that I recognized from the draft, and we'll go through them. Did you know that the first round was much quicker this year than in.

00:20:24
Speaker 1: Your Yeah, well you could tell. It was like three hours. Actually, oddly thought it was too short. What too short? I did? I feel like the draft I wanted to be a comp There used to be a place in Lexington called Morrison's Cafeteria. Okay, when you went to Morrison's Cafeteria, the food was not great, but you could get a lot of it. So what you lacked in quality you could get in quantity. I feel like the NFL Draft I need to be overstuffed at the end, and it was under three hours, and I just felt like that was just kind of a little quick. It's amazing.

00:21:04
Speaker 2: When Roger Goodell first took over the draft, first round was like four hours and something minutes, and now it's down to like two thirty two forty, So.

00:21:11
Speaker 1: I think it should be they there were I think eight minutes between picks. I think I would go ten. Well, it was ten. I think ten was right, though it used to be fifteen and that was too long. Yeah, that was too long because they would be but I think I didn't get enough Kuiper, didn't get enough booger.

00:21:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, I disagree. I thought it was it was coming and it and it didn't stop coming and I and I appreciate that.

00:21:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I can see that. I like the a I would go ten, but no, that it was it did feel more like a bam bam bam show, right right.

00:21:45
Speaker 2: And you know it used to be like ten fifteen rounds too, not all on TV, but it used to be much.

00:21:51
Speaker 1: Much a longer time, fair though, I mean you don't remember that. That wasn't that was like please.

00:21:56
Speaker 5: It was like I don't remember Marvin hours second. Now, I don't remember the eighties when it was fifteen rounds. It's been seven for I mean, it's been seven at least since Tom Brady was picked. Because Brady famously went in the sixth.

00:22:08
Speaker 1: Round like one nine. So I would say I enjoyed it being shorter, but I'd like it to have been just a little bit longer.

00:22:17
Speaker 2: Well, Pittsburgh as a is your second story. Living on to number two here, Pittsburgh host the host city, broke records over the draft weekend. They had eight hundred and five thousand people attend the draft, three hundred and twenty thousand showed up for the first round, and the city, the mayor of Pittsburgh told everybody in the city not to drive during the NFL Draft.

00:22:38
Speaker 1: What does that mean? Like anywhere in the city.

00:22:41
Speaker 2: Like it's just so crowded with people. They made an announcement if you can avoid it, don't.

00:22:45
Speaker 1: Drive, avoid the whole city or avoid downtown.

00:22:48
Speaker 2: That's what this is. The mayor of Pittsburgh that said this, do not drive. I did not say did not see any distinction of downtown or where in Pittsburgh.

00:22:56
Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, can I say this on the NFL podcast. I feel like the numbers they say it's a rec every year. How long are they going to keep saying that? Are they going to keep saying that until it's like five million people are there? Because I remember when it was in Nashville that was six hundred thousand. It's hard for me to imagine Pittsburgh had two hundred thousand more people like you couldn't move in Nashville, could not move.

00:23:25
Speaker 2: I was there. I could testify to that. It did look crowded in Pittsburgh too.

00:23:30
Speaker 1: No, he looked crowded. Maybe there's more area. I when Day three started, they were like begging people to come. Did you see that? They got on stage and they were like everyone in Pittsburgh get down here right now, don't drive, but get you want to break the record. And then I guess it happened. Yeah, would you go on day three?

00:23:51
Speaker 2: It's less exciting even though do they even announce that?

00:23:55
Speaker 1: Do they announce the picks? Not all of them.

00:23:57
Speaker 2: There are special ones that they come out for and announce, like people that are in the green room back there, So what do they take? Ah?

00:24:03
Speaker 1: So what are people doing during Day three? You mean like the fans? Yeah, I mean if I go to watch Day three, what is happening?

00:24:12
Speaker 2: Well, there's like a house band in like entertainment, so really of Typer's hair or something like that.

00:24:19
Speaker 1: I mean there's so they don't announce every pick. No, I don't believe.

00:24:22
Speaker 2: So, I mean like there may be like a flash of like the name.

00:24:24
Speaker 1: Well they announced the one guy who was in the Navy that was from Pittsburgh. That's part of it. There were two players from the Navy. That is it is okay, then no worry, We'll get to that okay. Do you like when they let former players and fans international? Do you like when they let them get on the microphone? Yeah, I'm fine with it. I like the Maga Wish kids. I think that's awesome. But like when they let like the guy who played for the Bengals twenty years ago play and he just talks, well, he kind of.

00:24:59
Speaker 2: They usually get into it and they insult like the rival team's fan bases like that, there's a little spice to it.

00:25:05
Speaker 1: You know what I don't like that is when they come on, because they all come on, they all do the same thing. Can I do one of them?

00:25:11
Speaker 2: But yeah, what team are you representing here?

00:25:14
Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, now please welcome to give them the pick for the Giants here is Matt Jones. Hey, Pittsmann was on and like every single guy does that in Pittsburgh. And someone's like, we've said hello to everyone, stop making me scream. Yeah, you got to play to the crowd. But they just do it one after another and.

00:25:42
Speaker 2: Then you got the bus that went up there for the Pitts.

00:25:45
Speaker 1: When the Steelers people go up, that was cool because the guys are getting to see their former Steelers guys.

00:25:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I am. I am for it.

00:25:52
Speaker 1: When I ask you about the international fate, yes, ask me. So they bring NFL international fans. I would like to talk to those people and figure out how they got to be fans of these teams. Well, it's a global sport now, but but someone will come and they'll be from like Tunisia, and they'll go, I'm from Tunisia and I'm a huge Indianapolis Colts fan, and I'm like, how how did you? How did you how that happen?

00:26:26
Speaker 2: They sent them a Super Bowl shirt after they lost to the same.

00:26:29
Speaker 1: Live in Tunisia. End up being like I get if they're a Cowboys fan or a Cheese fan, but like the smaller teams, I wonder, how do you how did they connect?

00:26:39
Speaker 2: Or even like a bigger country where they're starting to play games now, like Germany or even Australia.

00:26:44
Speaker 1: I understand Germany, and I understand why everybody in Britain's a Jacksonville fan because they're they think that's the only team because they play there every year. Yeah, in the hot tubs. But I do wonder about that. I what's your third news team.

00:26:59
Speaker 2: If you were watching the first round and noticed there weren't a ton of SEC guys, you were not alone. It was the first time since twenty fifteen the SEC did not have the most first round picks. The Big Ten had ten, the SEC had seven. Now the SEC eventually had eighty seven total selections that broke the all time record. Ohio State led the way with eleven players picked, and Bama and A and M both had ten.

00:27:22
Speaker 1: But the first round dominated by the Big Ten. That was a surprise, and it makes sense because the Big Ten ended up having the most success during the regular season.

00:27:30
Speaker 2: That's right, They've won the last three championship.

00:27:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think too. Yeah, I mean some of that is a change. I mean, I think the biggest change is the talent is now because of Nile spreading out across conferences. I think everybody thought all the talent was going to go to the top teams, and then we've talked about that hasn't really happened. It's made it to where guys, you have to be in a Power four school. It was the fewest non Power four players picked ever in the draft, and a.

00:27:56
Speaker 2: Lot of people talked about the last few rounds of the draft this year having significantly less talent than a year's past.

00:28:01
Speaker 1: Thus people go back, correct, that'll even itself out over time, though, that's like you know what I mean, Like once.

00:28:08
Speaker 5: Once we go through a couple of years and everybody has stayed, then eventually they're going to get in the draft, right, So that'll I think that's like a.

00:28:14
Speaker 1: Probably two year phenomenon that the talent was not as great at the end, But it is an example of how in I always spread the talent out around. I saw there were like ten teams that had in the Power for that had no people picked. And what was interesting is all the teams that had no pick people picked either won two, three or four games, except Virginia that won eleven. Wow.

00:28:42
Speaker 2: So that's a testament to good coaching over Well, that's.

00:28:45
Speaker 1: What I want to say. Virginia went eleven and two or eleven and three and only and had no one picked. Isn't that amazing? It is?

00:28:55
Speaker 2: And you could say the opposite would be what Dabo Sweeney and Clemson did because they had people picked. They had a ton picked, but they were terrible in this past year.

00:29:03
Speaker 1: True true. Bill Belichiah famously said that when he got to North Carolina it was going to be the thirty third NFL team. They had no one, none, none, They had no one picked. That's stink. I got to know more about what's going on in Virginia. To be eleven and three and have and be one of ten teams with no one picked in the power for it's pretty amazing. Yeah, something must be in the water down all right, what's the fourth story?

00:29:29
Speaker 2: Well, I think maybe the story of the first round in the draft where the Rams taking Ty Simpson thirteenth. Overall, your friend dan Orlovsky did a lot of thump and fort Ty Simpson, the GM for the Rams, was convinced that he was the guy.

00:29:44
Speaker 1: Sean McVay, I don't know.

00:29:46
Speaker 2: Maybe if you saw some of the conversations he had, it seemed like he wasn't really pleased with the pick.

00:29:51
Speaker 1: But let's start with Danilovsky. I like Dada Alovski a lot. I can see Dana Alofskia friend, I worked with him. There's no one who's evaluation of quarterbacks I trust less than Dana.

00:30:03
Speaker 6: Losk Less well, because I've had two major arguments that in both cases led to him having a significant amount of anger on air.

00:30:16
Speaker 1: During the argument with him about quarterbacks, would you like to know who they are? Yes, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen in both cases, with me saying they were gonna be good, in him saying they would not. Who ended up being right? He was adamant, especially about Josh Allen. When Josh Allen came out of Wyoming, he was adamant, He's not gonna be good. He stinks. What was then? He wanted, I can't remember who was in that draft? Was it the kid from U C, l A or USC He He loved both of them more than he did Well. Darnold ended up being good, but I think it was Josh Rosen and I And he doesn't want to talk about that now because he's big time, but I like to remind him I picked super MVPs or regular season MVPs. So I think the biggest strike against TODs Simpson is that Daniel lost. He likes it well, It's one way to look at it. The other is that the Rams already have an.

00:31:18
Speaker 2: MVP in Matthew Stafford, he's likely to play for one, if not two years.

00:31:22
Speaker 1: I don't mind the pick though. I mean, we'll get to what McVeigh thought. But if you think Toys Simpson is good, by the way, I'm not sure if he is. But if you think he's good, I don't mind picking him with Stafford still playing, because there were reports Stafford was going to retire before the season last year.

00:31:37
Speaker 2: It's just lack of experience. I mean, he has fifteen college starts at Alabama. He might have to wait even longer before he gets into the NFL and starts behind Stafford.

00:31:46
Speaker 1: But if you think he's good, doesn't it make sense for the Rams to pick him.

00:31:50
Speaker 2: If they think he's good, Yes, I think that, Like it's overblown that they could have taken a receiver and that would have been the thing that got them over to Hump to win the Super Bowl.

00:32:00
Speaker 1: I think that is overblown at times.

00:32:01
Speaker 2: Meanwhile, if you think this quarterback could be your quarterback for the next ten years after staffd that's more valuable.

00:32:07
Speaker 1: Okay, so then let's go through the timeline. McVeigh on draft night looks like he's been taking hostage. You're not kidding. He was like, yes, glad to have him, he will compete with Stetson minute. Yeah. No, he looked like he wasn't happy at all. Then the next day he did a press conference to talk about how happy he was. But he didn't really look happy in that press conference either, did he? No, not really And he said didn't he that he had never spoken to it. Well, they came out that they had a secret meeting. Well that's why I'm getting at Yeah. Then like two that my guy Ian Fitzsimmons has Ty Simpson on the radio and tes simsse I actually we met a number of times. They just didn't want me to tell anybody. Is that fair? Fair game? Yeah? I think so? I mean why not? There's no penalty for doing an extra means? Should there be? Should there be a penalty for line? Well? What is my moral code here? I mean? Yeah, I don't want people to lie.

00:33:09
Speaker 2: You don't, No, I don't want people to lie.

00:33:11
Speaker 1: Okay, So I don't think they were lying with the secret They clearly were lying. They specifically said we'd never spoke. They just weren't telling the truth. There's a distinction. There's a difference. That's what you don't was McVeigh doing Why was he acting like that? He said, I was doing it out of respect for Matthew Stafford. But how how was that respectful because it's it's very disrespectful for toys Simpson, at least on paper.

00:33:37
Speaker 2: Right. Well, maybe you think you already have that position locked up, you already have a back it.

00:33:42
Speaker 1: Do you think he wanted McVeigh? Yes, No, I don't think he So you think like his his actions that night are reflective of value.

00:33:51
Speaker 2: I don't think he could. He could hide it. It's bad poker face, okay, and like and you got to be So what do you think of the fact that it.

00:33:57
Speaker 1: Comes out that he's met with him for many hours and that he was all in You think that's just bogus? I think yeah, probably both. You don't think he did meet him? No, I think you didn't know each other.

00:34:07
Speaker 2: I think they did meet him, But I think he's live he didn't like.

00:34:09
Speaker 1: Him about how much he likes him, Yes, and I think they do. You think he met him, didn't like him, correct, and then had to take it.

00:34:18
Speaker 2: Yes, because of the GM's relationship with like Ty Simpson and his family apparently, Oh, they have a relationship.

00:34:24
Speaker 1: I believe.

00:34:24
Speaker 2: The quote is that GM told his family that he was going to be a first round pick.

00:34:29
Speaker 1: Well, I mean I could have told him that. Well, I mean, who else was taking him besides the Rams? Well, I think there was a bunch of teams considering taking him right.

00:34:37
Speaker 2: Maybe much later in the draft, not at thirteen thirteen?

00:34:41
Speaker 1: Is so you think they did this for the family. I don't know.

00:34:47
Speaker 2: You know, it's it's kind of hard to tell who's in charge with a lot of those situations, right, those draft rooms where there's twenty people in there.

00:34:55
Speaker 1: What are they all doing in there? By the way, I hate when they all clap, they all bro hug after this. Yeah, And I don't like they're wearing suits. A lot of them slip people dressed down. They were gonna wear hoodies and shorts. Yeah, I mean that's that's football gear. I guess. Well, I don't know if he's good or not. I'm skeptical. And the biggest striking against him was that Dana Oofski thinks I like that. I like that. Rana thought. Whatever Dane Olofsky says about a quarterback go the other direction. All right, what's fit?

00:35:41
Speaker 2: Let's talk about the Cowboys and the Steelers for the second because later in the first round, the Cowboys were on the clock at twenty and the Steelers, thinking the Cowboys weren't going to pick a receiver, got on the phone with mackay Lemon talk to him about, Hey, welcome to Pittsburgh.

00:35:57
Speaker 1: You're gonna be a Steeler.

00:35:58
Speaker 2: But the Eagles were trying to get in touch with Makay they couldn't get in touch with him because he was already on the phone with the Steelers. The Eagles traded with the Cowboys for the twentieth pick and then ended up selecting mackay Lemon.

00:36:11
Speaker 1: So I saw this play out. I think the Steelers, you know, they they got a little they jumped the gun, jumped the gun a little bit, didn't they. And then the offensive lineman that they picked, who, by the way, I predicted. That's right, I predicted this whole chain of Vince or you did. Una. Sure, he's got to know I wasn't their first choice.

00:36:34
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's interesting.

00:36:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he knows they wanted to pick the other guy.

00:36:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, what's the spin zone that you got to tell him?

00:36:41
Speaker 1: After he's I don't know what did Steelers explain when they called him. What was going on? Like why?

00:36:47
Speaker 2: I haven't seen an explanation on it.

00:36:49
Speaker 1: Do you like the Eagles move to jump ahead of him with.

00:36:53
Speaker 2: The Yeah, with aj Brown likely moving to a different team, I think this was necessary for them to jump ahead and get a receiver. It's just the Cowboys making a deal with a division rival for.

00:37:03
Speaker 1: Them to allow them to do that. Would you do that? No, you would know I would not do any deal, so you would say, no trades with my division? Rud correct? Okay, yeah, well it is. It is surprising if you're the kid. I do wonder though, did he put on the Steeler's hat and then all is his family took the others and then he had to go grab the Eagles hat from one of them.

00:37:27
Speaker 2: Well, there's thirty two in front of him, right, He's on the phone, and then somebody has to say stop stop some.

00:37:33
Speaker 1: Of there the Eagles. Is this guy and I have call waiting, Sorry, coach, somebody's calling. I gotta take this. Oh yeah, yeah, I would kind of be rude to get off the phone with, you know, the guy you think is your coach.

00:37:44
Speaker 2: Hold on, I'm getting another call. But yeah, like bizarre, I wonder how many times that's happened.

00:37:48
Speaker 1: That's what happens because this thing is on.

00:37:50
Speaker 2: Delay and don't even get online. The picks are tipped by these reporters.

00:37:55
Speaker 1: I intentionally, I was with Shannon in in London, Kentucky, and I intentionally did not get online. It's much more enjoyable, Billy, if you don't get online, right, because you don't know and you're surprised, you know. Yeah, absolutely, It's like, uh, if you don't read the news and you just wait for it and then you just go through live and somebody goes, you know, who's president? The guy from remember they remember The Apprentice? That dude is the president.

00:38:25
Speaker 2: No, really, it really sounds like Jeff Probes from Survivor.

00:38:30
Speaker 1: I get, but the guy from the appron. That's how I did the draft. I just didn't didn't and who.

00:38:37
Speaker 2: Know this entire time, it's just like two three minutes behind.

00:38:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, well now you see what all right? Number six.

00:38:43
Speaker 2: I thought it was interesting during Day two of the NFL Draft they stopped the draft to do a fake pick. I don't know if you saw this, Matt, but there is a Hulu show called The Land where they did a mock first overall pick to the Browns.

00:38:58
Speaker 1: So they did a every draft movie about the Browns. They're so bad. Can you do draft movies and the Browns? Or did they just sell to anybody?

00:39:09
Speaker 2: People thought it was like Draft Day two and that got a lot of excitement since that's such a good movie. But it's actually a Hulu show. The land is what it's called.

00:39:16
Speaker 1: So they did so they acted like it was a real draft.

00:39:19
Speaker 2: The first overall pick. Yeah, Godell came out and made an announcement. Huh.

00:39:24
Speaker 1: Have you ever been in a sporting event where they do something like that? They did that movie. Yeah, they did that in a UK game one time. They at halftime, they had like they came out at halftime and had everybody like cheer and they acted like all they did was shoot the crowd. So they were like, act like someone's hit a shot, okay, and then the crowd and then I know, I don't think it ever came out whatever it was they were doing. Will Ferrel did that once at an event. Yeah, I'm trying to think what the you know Batman filmed?

00:39:54
Speaker 2: Was it heinz Field one year where they did the everything collapsing?

00:39:58
Speaker 1: I believe that was at a game. Yeah, they did. Will Ferrell did some once because I saw it online, but then I don't know that it ever actually came out. The thing that did it.

00:40:06
Speaker 2: Well, that would be awesome to be an excell.

00:40:08
Speaker 1: I didn't know this. So did they have Did they show it on television?

00:40:12
Speaker 2: They didn't show it on television. But there was like a I think there was like a warning that they told everybody there that this is not an actual draft pick.

00:40:18
Speaker 1: This is a I.

00:40:19
Speaker 2: Don't know how they worded a movie or whatever they decided to say. When Kevin Costner came out, No, no Kevin Costner, it was Roger in this instance, it was Roger.

00:40:30
Speaker 1: Interesting in the Hulu shows called What the Land? Which shows are you watching now?

00:40:35
Speaker 2: By the way, Well, I mean we talked about this Storage Wars as I'm on a kick right now and the guy just died from Storage Wars, so it was a sensitive time.

00:40:44
Speaker 1: Right now Storage Wars. Yeah, were people just sell their storage cabinets? Yes? And then why is that interesting? Well? I did a bit on my.

00:40:54
Speaker 2: Radio show, the KSR pre Show weekdays from nine to ten am.

00:40:58
Speaker 1: Okay, this is a national podcast.

00:41:03
Speaker 2: He challenged me to become an auctioneer with any year, and so I was like, okay, Shannon, you got a deal. So I've been watching a little bit more Storage Wars. I had the International World Champion of Auctioneers reach out to me wanting to mentor me.

00:41:15
Speaker 1: So maybe it's just I not know any of this. You're not even to become an auctioneer. I'm going to dabble.

00:41:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna try a little bit to pick it up.

00:41:24
Speaker 1: It was of it.

00:41:27
Speaker 2: No, I have done known auctioneering.

00:41:29
Speaker 1: Do you can you right now do anything?

00:41:31
Speaker 2: No?

00:41:31
Speaker 1: I'm very un Why do you want to be an auctioneer? That's maybe a job that is a you want to be a cobbler?

00:41:38
Speaker 2: Like?

00:41:38
Speaker 1: Are you just trying to get things? That time has? Well?

00:41:40
Speaker 2: I was changed by my co host.

00:41:43
Speaker 1: How did that come up?

00:41:45
Speaker 2: You know, I'm not sure, but you know I would say my strength is my voice, and if I wanted to become an auctioneer, then I can even excuse I got two over here, who's got three? Who's got three over here? I got three over here? To be three fifty? Who's got three fifty? I got three fifty right here?

00:42:02
Speaker 1: You got a long way to go?

00:42:04
Speaker 2: Well, thank you, But I did have the international champion reach out to me. We're gonna grab lunch in a month.

00:42:09
Speaker 1: You're grabbing lunch with an auctioneer.

00:42:11
Speaker 2: Not just an auctioneer, an international champion.

00:42:14
Speaker 1: Do people still do auctions like that? Well, I don't know. I like to think it lives on in Storage Wars going to auctions for that reason. I just was maasmorized by the voice. But I didn't know people still did it.

00:42:29
Speaker 2: Well, I can officiate the winning and auctioneer.

00:42:32
Speaker 1: So you watch you watch Storage Wars because you have an auctioneer fetish.

00:42:39
Speaker 2: Well, I think that I'm just like preparing myself for the moment.

00:42:42
Speaker 1: I think Matt.

00:42:43
Speaker 2: I do like the show, and it is timely with the death of Daryl.

00:42:47
Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Darryl. I was meaning more like fiction. Is there is there one? Yeah?

00:42:55
Speaker 2: The Witcher is what I'm watching on Netflix. That's kind of like a fantasy thing.

00:42:58
Speaker 1: Isn't that kind of old? Let's say it's a few years old. Yeah, it's not new.

00:43:02
Speaker 2: All right, That's what I'm into now.

00:43:04
Speaker 1: I've been watching Rooster what's that about? Steve Currell on HBO. He's a professor, he's an author going through a midlife crisis and he teaches it a college campus where his daughter also goes.

00:43:16
Speaker 2: Is that where he's like picking up all the girls on campus?

00:43:18
Speaker 1: He doesn't really pick up on. I kind of thought that's what it was, but that's really not what it is. It's it's it's pretty good. It's okay for your friends and neighbors with John Hamm breaks into people's houses. I liked. I think that's very good. Any auctioneers in any of those No, No, none of his friends or neighbors are auctioneers. Do I think? What else I watch? There's a good shows on Peacock that I think I'm the only person on Earth that watch called Ponies. I haven't seen that one either. It's about these two women their husbands get killed in the CIA spying on Russia, and for reasons that are really clear, they just decide to spy on Russia for the CIA, which I didn't know. You could just hand it to your wife. That's pretty good though, actually, And what was it called ponies? Ponies? Okay? But I know one I know is.

00:44:06
Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to run out of Storage Wars episode, so I'll have to find something else.

00:44:09
Speaker 1: Well, maybe you'll become a CIA woman. What's next?

00:44:15
Speaker 2: I thought this was an interesting tidbit. I don't know how much it means for the draft. But Mike Tomlin is joining NBC and we'll have a role with Football Night in America.

00:44:23
Speaker 1: That'll be good. I think he'll be good. Actually, I think he's got to get reports too. So Tony Dungee retired, that's right, and they're getting rid of Chris Simms, so to be what who's on that, Rodney.

00:44:34
Speaker 2: Harrison, Maria Taylor, Maria Taylor, Mike Rico, yeah, Florio, Florio, Okay.

00:44:42
Speaker 1: I think Mike tom Win'll be good. I guess he's taking over for Tony Dungee, right, I think so. He probably won't do it for very long, though. You gotta assume he's gonna coach again soon.

00:44:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, probably a one year thing, right, this one year out of coaching to take a break, assess the job market.

00:44:55
Speaker 1: And then they said they're going to every game this year. You know sometimes they used to wear in studio and someone they're going to every game. So Mike Tomlin will be at a stadium near you.

00:45:04
Speaker 2: Well, nineteen years in Pittsburgh. I'm I'm interested to see how he is because people just say he's a slam dunk, he's going to be.

00:45:09
Speaker 1: Great hand in the skeptical. I don't know. I'm just let's why don't you think it'd be good? He always seems like he's charismatic, he's handsome, he knows the sport, so he'll be he'll tie him. I don't know.

00:45:20
Speaker 2: I'm just anti people getting jobs in TV just because they played the profession.

00:45:25
Speaker 1: Who do you want to be the like expert out analyst. I mean, shouldn't it make sense that they should have played? No?

00:45:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just being about somebody that has no experience that gets a job that broadcasters would want.

00:45:39
Speaker 1: But that's what sports athletes are, is that they I mean almost none of them have had none of them had a job before they do it right. I mean, they're not going to go work in Albany. Do you want Mike to get his reps in and Billings, Montana.

00:45:56
Speaker 2: Before he goes to Hazard, Kentucky, learn how to read a teleprompter, and then he'll come back.

00:46:03
Speaker 1: I think you, I think what's actually in players? Won the ninety one? You just gave it? Did not get it? All? Right? What's that number eight?

00:46:26
Speaker 2: I'll I'll give you credit for this one because I this guy was not on my radar before you talked about it in the last Cover zero episode.

00:46:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, I previewed this.

00:46:33
Speaker 2: Who are Bernard was selected in the seventh round with pick two hundred and fifty one by the Eagles. He is a Nigerian defensive tackle. Has not played a single down of football in his life. He is twenty one years old and a member of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program. But Matty's sixty four three hundred and six pounds, ran a four six three forty and a ten foot ten inch broad jump.

00:46:56
Speaker 1: This guy is a crazy kind of They have him do the broad jump. That's not something that would showcase itself in an NFL game. Uh, you know, I don't know, maybe like maybe Mike America. Yeah, he's a freak athlete. I wanted to work. But I also think it's kind of odd. What does it say if someone can be drafted and play in the NFL who's never played football before? Does that say that that's a sport that if you're athletic enough, anyone can do well.

00:47:29
Speaker 2: It's more about potential than in his production was what we lined on last year.

00:47:32
Speaker 1: I'll be really mad if I didn't get picked and the guy who never played did, I'd be like, why did I do this?

00:47:43
Speaker 2: It's like, you study your entire life to be a broadcaster and Mike Tomlins gets the job because he played the sport, but.

00:47:50
Speaker 1: This guy specifically did not play this port. There's this guy got the job just because he's more athletic than you, even worse. You spent your whole life going for this. So do you think this guy will ever play in a game? Oh?

00:48:03
Speaker 2: I think yeah, I think he plays in a game.

00:48:06
Speaker 1: I'm not just an exhibition game. Does he ever play in a real game for an NFL team? Yeah?

00:48:10
Speaker 2: I mean there's a lot of games to play. We got seventeen, so I definitely think he gets in. Now will he haven't like a much of an impact.

00:48:18
Speaker 1: There's a lot of games to play, That's why he's gonna play.

00:48:21
Speaker 5: Everybody gets get hurt, Matt, everybody gets But he has even made the team.

00:48:25
Speaker 1: He could easily get caught.

00:48:26
Speaker 2: That's true.

00:48:28
Speaker 1: That's true. He didn't think about that. I mean you probably should have. Well, I'm urted for him. Who are Bernard? Who are all? Right? Well? I love this story I love that they found him, and uh, well, hopefully it works out. Who's next.

00:48:42
Speaker 2: Let's talk a little quarterbacks, Matt, because there were some big names that went to some interesting destinations. The first is Drew Aller, who got picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

00:48:51
Speaker 1: In that I don't understand that one. That Dreeller was never good. Dreeller had every chance in the world to be good in college, he played on he played all four years at penn State, right, and he never was good. And he was I think the third core back taking or fourth. I don't understand why. What is the Drew Aller? You talk about a guy that had every chance to be and was on a good team.

00:49:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, must be potential or how much I mean.

00:49:19
Speaker 1: Like how many times you have to play before potential? It's like he played a lot. Yeah, well, Pittsburgh we know needs a quarterback. We still don't know about it around they're just picking, Like, I don't know, does Pittsburgh not scout outside the state of Pennsylvania because they picked Canny pick it, that's right, And now they're picking Drew Aller. They picked the guy that's from there, that was in the Navy.

00:49:42
Speaker 2: Yes, that's true. They just they don't pick a lot of head coaches.

00:49:46
Speaker 1: Does the budget not extend past the state borders?

00:49:49
Speaker 2: I think you've found it in the scouting department. Just very very limited in all right, who else? We also had Carson Beck that was the third round, eleven picks, sooner he went to the Cardinals teaming up.

00:50:01
Speaker 1: Actually kind of like that one. I think Carson Beck is good. I think because Carson b had such a bad year at Georgia that people then just had in their minds that he was a disappointment. But at Miami he was good. He was good, and you get him in the third round. And if you're Arizona, I like that pick. I don't know if he'll be good, but I like the I think that's a really good risk to take for fear of them.

00:50:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, unfortunately for him, he might be the first quarterback that plays out of this class.

00:50:32
Speaker 1: But that's good. I mean, that's okay. I'm surprised that he was. Like I if you asked me, would you rather have Carson Beck or Ty Simpson? I think I would have taken Carson Beck.

00:50:43
Speaker 2: If I would have got Beck in the third round instead of having to go Simpson in the first that would make sense.

00:50:48
Speaker 1: Well, I don't. I would just say to him just forget about the round value. I mean, if you just said, who would you rather have on your roster? I think I'd rather have Carson. He was good this year, like really good. So, but people's just punishing him for what happened at Georgia. And I don't understand that. I mean, did Georgia Kirby smart? You know his system that's a different thing. Was a gunner?

00:51:13
Speaker 2: Stockton came in, Yeah, and he.

00:51:15
Speaker 1: Played then you know what's his face? Stetson Bennett. I don't know. I thought that was a good pick. Who else? A couple more?

00:51:23
Speaker 2: Garrettessmyer went to the Chiefs in the seventh round. Taylor Green, the Arkansas quarterback, went to Cleveland. Poor guy, sixth round, one hundred eighty seconds coat.

00:51:31
Speaker 1: Wait, what's that? I mean?

00:51:32
Speaker 4: Taylor Green Arkansas was awful and he wasn't very I mean, he's a crazy good athlete. But I don't get that one have fourteen quarterbacks? What is they just keep picking bioble.

00:51:46
Speaker 2: Sjohn Watson's coming back eventually, and then Diego Pavia was an interesting one not drafted, was invited to Ravens mini camp.

00:51:53
Speaker 1: And I thought the full camp.

00:51:58
Speaker 2: Just yesterday that Adam Schefter says that he signed a three year deal with the Ravens.

00:52:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, but NFL deals, I don't know. It depends, you know, NFL deals may or may not be real in some ways. It depends on whether or not they're guaranteed.

00:52:14
Speaker 2: There is guaranteed money aspects of it.

00:52:16
Speaker 1: But like this, probably he's trying to keep him from going to the CFL.

00:52:20
Speaker 2: Is that what the undrafted free agent contract?

00:52:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, they're trying to keep him from going playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers or whatever. Correct, Yeah, diego pop. He's not gonna be Do you think he will be good at all? No? I would never pick a player that doesn't have an agent. You think that's just poor like, but I just think it's poor decision making. I mean, Lamar obviously has worked out, but I also think he's probably cost himself tens of millions of dollars by not having an agent. Yeah, but they don't want to pay somebody they don't understand. But that's like saying I don't want to pay for a new roof, so I'll just let these shingles fall off, it'll work itself out.

00:53:03
Speaker 2: Well, probably not.

00:53:05
Speaker 1: Eventually, it's gonna catch up to you. So and what's the last one. Well, let's talk about the Navy guys.

00:53:10
Speaker 2: Because two guys were drafters in the US Naval Academy. It's the first time that's happened in seventy years.

00:53:16
Speaker 1: That's nice.

00:53:16
Speaker 2: Eli heiden Reich and Landon Robinson were both picked in the seventh round. They are the twentieth and twenty first midshipman ever to be picked.

00:53:25
Speaker 1: When it comes to this NFL draft.

00:53:28
Speaker 2: Their first pair to get drafted in the same year since nineteen fifty six. Robinson will go to the Cincinnati Bengals while.

00:53:34
Speaker 1: The other one will be playing.

00:53:36
Speaker 2: For And I just lost it. I think it's a Pittsburgh matt Yeah, that's Pittsburgh. Yeah, we talked about it because he was in the neighborhood.

00:53:43
Speaker 1: That's right.

00:53:44
Speaker 2: He's a receiver and a running back. The other one is a defective.

00:53:46
Speaker 1: Good for them. I mean, I think anybody that goes through the physical vigor that it would take to be in the Navy, you know, the NFL's.

00:53:55
Speaker 2: Not going to scare him, but you still got to serve. Right, It's just like a delay. And I think they.

00:54:00
Speaker 1: Passed a rule though that like you can play in the NFL and then serve after correct. Yes, I think they did that because you remember David Robinson, he got picked number one in the draft and then served in the Navy for a year before he played for the Spurs.

00:54:13
Speaker 2: See, I did not know that thing about that for a minute. I mean, think about it.

00:54:17
Speaker 1: If Aj Debondsa were to go one in the well, actually loose Cooper flag, Cooper's gotta go that. Cooper was right now, not with Dallas. But it was just like, look, I got a year of the navy. That's what David Robinson did. Wow, and he was seven foot one in the Navy. It's gotta be hard to hide him.

00:54:39
Speaker 2: I'm glad we made the exception though, Like I mean, I know that.

00:54:43
Speaker 1: But people would say, well, there's a lot of careers out there, why do you get the exception for sports.

00:54:48
Speaker 2: Well that's a good point, but I would say it's just like it's not very often. It's like a very low percentage of.

00:54:54
Speaker 1: Probally good for recruiting for the Yeah, yeah, just recruiting, not I don't mean for the sports teams. Just like you can come to the Navy and still fulfill your dream to do whatever right. And the other argument is probably other careers, you know, sports, your body will age out of being able to do it, whereas other careers that may not be true.

00:55:15
Speaker 2: And I'd want to have somebody that was a service member on my team. I think they probably bring a grit and toughness that maybe somebody that's just handed to the job doesn't have.

00:55:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you know, most of these people picking the saving.

00:55:26
Speaker 2: Round don't make the team, like mister irrelevant. This year, Buffalo linebacker Red Murdoch, great name, broke Khalil max record for forced fumbles in a career at Buffalo. Oh so he got picked by Buffalo, picked by Denver. He was at Yeah, and broke Khalil max record.

00:55:44
Speaker 1: Who would you want to be mister irrelevant? I mean, you get a whole parade, you get a whole thing. Yes, I would. I'd like to be drafted by the NFL. But you have to have a sense of humility about it. You can't. You have to be okay being called mister irrelevant. Yeah, I got to be able to laugh at myself. You're gonna have to like laugh, But you know this. There's a town that gives you a parade. I didn't know there was a parade. Well, you didn't know about this. There's a town somewhere that mister Irrelevant is their thing, and they like give them a parade and they have a mister Irrelevant Hall of Fame that you get your plaque in. And they've had a number of guys in that spot play in the NFL. That's very cool. What is the town?

00:56:31
Speaker 2: I don't have the town here, but there is a Since nineteen seventy six, NFL alumnus Paul Salata created Irrelevant Week. It's an annual celebration recognized of the NFL that honors the last player picked every year. Still looking for where is it though, still looking for the location here. But there's been some successful mister irrelevance. Yeah, Purriy is somebody that's still yes.

00:56:55
Speaker 1: And Newport Beach, California, it's the official mister irrelevant town. They give a heisman, They they give a Loewsman Trophy, which is the opposite now that come on, this can't be true. They give a trophy of a player dropping a ball instead of carrying a ball. That campaign all.

00:57:16
Speaker 2: These guys have a sense of humor.

00:57:18
Speaker 1: They all right. If they don't, well, then you're gonna.

00:57:22
Speaker 2: Not show up for the annual celebration of Mister Irrelevant.

00:57:25
Speaker 1: So it's in Newport Beach, California. You get to go to Disneyland, you participate in a sailine regatta, you throw the first pitch at a baseball game. You go to the Loewsman banquet. You are giving a Lowsman Trophy and you meet fellow Loewsman heroes. I'm in sign me up meet other heroes. I can't believe they make them take a trophy. That's someone dropping a ball.

00:57:56
Speaker 2: Chad Kelly, the former Old Miss quarterback, was the Mister Irrelevant in twenty seventeen.

00:58:01
Speaker 1: Well that's a week long celebration. A week Red Murdoch was interviewed. He said it was a very emotional moment to be picked as mister Irrelevant. The thoughts crept in that I might not get drafted, but I kept my mind on it and when I got the call, I was extremely grateful. Well good for him, and you got a lot of family members around.

00:58:23
Speaker 2: They want you to succeed and be drafted. So when you get picked with the last pick. I'm sure it's a special moment.

00:58:29
Speaker 1: The guy who started it just recently died, and there is a foundation that has an endowment for mister irrelevant, So so what does that mean. Endowment's like money that runs, you know, they put it in the market and then it university's having dowment, right, mister irrelevant has an adownment. So am I?

00:58:51
Speaker 2: Am I going to get money paid out to me over these No?

00:58:53
Speaker 1: No, it's how they probably pay for these festivals. Okay, well, Billy, I think we just summarize the draft better than anyone else. We recapped the draft. I hope you all enjoyed it. Thank you all, and we will see you later. This has been Cover zero NFL. Cover zero with Matt Jones and Drew Franklin is a production of the NFL and iHeart podcast.
