cap off Game of the Year season, the real game of the year here

legitimately cut this lift list of roughly in half from Wow, it could have

way more, just like he could have been way more havoc when he joined
us for Game of the Year. I'm talking, of course, about Mike

got a lot to go over today. We're gonna play, you know,
like thirty ish seconds of each song. I think, jan is why I

left off there, namely Starfield, Armored Core six, and Spider Man two,

I want to hear all the music I've never heard before, the order all

what I like about this is whenever I get to the end of the movie
and the credits start playing and it is a song like this, I get

have a very catchy looks nothing about lyrics a catchy problem with it, And

saying, well, several of these have several nominations, but that's all for

Songs like borderline, uh, like country butt rock adjacent to which is
work like, Yeah, it's close to it. It's singing rubbing up against
this. I was singing Creed with someone last week, and I don't remember
who. Were singing it constantly everywhere we went. Here's the thing right in
the in the pantheon of Capcom vocalized songs, this is dead dead loss like
near the bottom. I probably bury the light from uh double Oh yeah,
I would say that that one goes hard or indestructible. Oh no, Bees
Bees is also in that from Dogma. It's okay, that's fine, Mike,
but it's my favorite Mike. Who knows what if everything else is dog

as the one piece rap, but I had to include it for Fire almblew
Engage we're talking about here. The soundtrack gets better, but I just had
to point out that absolutely ttroscity of a song. Okay, yeah, this
is this is like your normal fire emblem joint. We're here. Yeah,
it's just tray off the skin stinty. Yeah, this is the preparation.
Yeah, that is an this game, but this sounds cool. Yeah,
exciting, Okay, battle, Yeah, this is good. This is just
where you getting set up for a battle too. So yeah, yes,
keep it, keep it on the list, for sure. You have a
faraway holy land that's far away but fair away. Okay, but imagine this
with gunshots thuff. Yeah, it doesn't highlight. It does highlight part of
my problem with the soundtrack though. There's many versions of the this song yeah,
which is a fire um bump pain. They tend to do that the
same books, just like when things do that where they kind of just play
with one Yeah, it's it's it's not bad. There's better examples of that
on this list, I'll say. But yeah, Jake chants asking for a
little bit more juice on the music negative and also maybe let's let it play
a little bit before we start talking over it, just a little bit each

Does And then the last track from a fire and booking gage I've seen
in parentheses here, shouts out to im Ron Khan suggestion, that's I like
when a chorus is added to anything. Yeah. Yeah, all five of
these very good, very and the coming back to the main theme, it
really is very good. It's a good main theme. Yeah it is.
Okay, Oh all right, put atle asterisk next to fire embleming game.
Yeah, certainly, certainly so right up there with Pizza Tower totally. Now
we begin the boulders Gate three segment of Okay, let's hear it. It's
just so funny, like people who can sing that love that's amazing. I
think I can go that. This is good. I love us. Wait
your turn to bay get me? Oh Whatnay? What instrument is this,
I believe. Okay, all right, we'll let it build a little bit
more when it's coming in. Now, Oh, what a difference between this
and the elementary chorus I witnessed. Then they'll get there, back, they'll

high voice starts quick, your big advanescence person vocalizing the massive started back.

it's Game of Thrones, but it's very good. So yes, the soundtrack
does go other places, though, I believe this. This next one is

He was fucking lax weird what he was saying. Therefore, with that,

Balduran Bo. That would that would be a twist. I would have lost

losing me for me, But it's it's still good. That's good calm music.
That's why I wish there was a bit more born to independ make sense
as like a cavern. So no, hope were so okay, I'm back

I don't think that to about to break down, all right, It's
it's pretty much this. The lyrics are very literal, which is kind of
funny, is it. I don't roll the dice. That was weird when
she sang that all right down by the road is great. Oh nice,
mister Poley. Oh my god, there's so much like you're sleeping, So
take fly, take me through the night. Yeah, I was into the
first two more. It's like a song that you hear when you're dying,
and this is not. Yeah, like a let's be real, though,
be real, cam, Let's be real. The next song is the one
that yes, this is this is heard this before. It's here. Let's
go to Raphael's final Okay, I'm glad everyone was demanding it, and I'm
mad I missed. I'm so mad I miss the game proper. Okay,
all right, Mike, would you mind turning your mic up? Justice?
We actually I think I turned you down? Sorry once? What's Oh you're
really you're really stretching it here? Okay, it's gonna happen. In his
final song, I'm excited wars erecting the couse cutting force, but hold your
reward, Sam squam down the Yeah, the boss is singing his own theme
in this. That's cool. I saw someone say if you silence him,
the lyrics stop, which is very clever. That rules there too. I
saw the trends are in orchestra FLDS and this sounds exactly like sad be Bought,
Doomed Detected. Yeah, it's very very Danny Elfman and yeah, yeah
it's great. Oh I love's theme, No more deal, it's over the
final note, no more grace, it's over this house of hopcause yeah,
this is very much like pumps ship. Does he cast the spell to like
make music play while he's or is it just like he starts singing out of
nowhere? Yeah? Singing? Is the music diegetic? What is that other
than within the universe, like it's someone playing instruments around him? Or did
he like okay, okay, he just suddenly joined Because I guess he's a
demon, he would probably be able to like, Yeah, it's okay.
Yeah, it's like nacious theme moment. Okay, very gonna break into song,
Gonna be honest here. The first two tracks kept me, the lost
last three lost me. Yeah, I'm with you again on again we are
FIL's final act is a really cool thing that that I am down with.
Sounds are very good. I'm all for more musicals weaseling their way into games.
Yeah we can, we can wrap up off to the next one.
I think that was the no, this is going to be tough there.
Oh, I would like to say. I would like say just to clarify
one thing, I have not played enough of all these games to hear all
these songs. So I did go off of people's recommendations and the most played
from a variety of sources. So an was wandering because I did see in
the chat help people were wondering. That's why some tracks are chosen and some
are left off. This is what the people want. This category in the
past has never had any actual preparation or scientific as much scientific strategy put into
that. For you to demand that now is frankly offensive where you get off
alright, oh fuck me, so all right, you hypocritic you don't like
much. Just so people part of this song and mind you play. I'll
be the first to admit, Okay, as strong as I agree with Tam
that the music overall and Alima two is pretty tough to beat this year,
I'm not a huge fan of the song. It very much feels like an
imagine Dragon's fucking abomination. Context goes so far where it's like, yeah,
I know what you mean. When you say that, but the idea of
it, like just showing up at Helen Wake two and that being the song
that they chose for some reason. I like, no, I love this
without the great caveats. I just think it's fun. That's fine. I'm
a very shitty person when it come to music. Say it okay, but
uh again, And I'm glad we started off with what I, in my
opinion, is the weakest part of the music in that game. I think,
yeah, gets it, gets wee. That songs a lot of fun.
I like it. Next, of course you do. Next we have
follow You into the Dark featuring Raquel. Okay, oh yeah, this is
a ship. It's almost like, why do we even play the first song?
Right? Well, you know you need to get the full picture,
right Yeah. I mean I also think there's a lot of like all the
chapter interlude songs in this game are are tremendous, like, uh you know
they they they tie, in my opinion, together, the idea of like
this episodic, chapter written sort of adventure that you're on in a way that
like it just fucking hits real nice. And then obviously we're gonna play the
best one of the one of the straight up one of the best songs of
the year, and let alone a game game song, right yeah, and
of course that that kind of whispery. I don't know what you call it,
that genre. That doesn't do quite a much for me as who's your
second favorite band, Mike, Okay a lot? Okay, all right.
Of course we can't have best music of the game, best music of the
year, and have Allen Wake two without of course having Herald of Darkness.
Oh yeah, I mean, yeah, it's funny. Ilka's face so good.
You're fucking Ilka's face. Why no, No, Ilka's face the whole
time. Yeah, it's amazing. Look this. I also think this song
is like going to get more people into Like this is a very entry level
metal song, and I think that's awesome and so selfishly, anytime people get
onboarded to what is good music, I think it's a it's a huge win.
So uh no notes here, Okay, backlar, If I really enjoyed
that, what is like the next baby step up from them? I think
you're I think you're primed and ready for the band Ghost. I think they
I think they're absolutely that for sure. Okay, And I know that's Poets
of the Fall, Right, so I feel like there was a song from
Max Payne that Poets of the Fall did for their credit song that was actually
that was that was pretty good. I didn't know, like I think.
I think they're sort of like LARPing as a metal band in this uh yeah,
in this thing. Uh but they do a great job and uh yeah,
I was gonna recommend Cohied, but oh, Cod's great. I don't
know if I think, uh, Claudio's voice is jarring to a lot of
people, and I think it'd be a safer I love Cody to be clear,
one of my one of my top bands from uh I guess when I
was Jan's age No, but uh yeah, Koe's awesome, Coy's Yeah,
it's a blank guardian a lot of time. They're coming into town next year.
Uh now we have Sea of Stars starting with the Mountain Trail Parentheses day.
All right, okay, I'll give the game this this this track does
slap. Oh yeah, that's really that's really good. This is good for
and and fun and it's but also it does have a real warmth to it
that I like a lot. Yeah, that's good adventure and r g G
music yeah, absolutely, How are we gonna do this? You guys,
we say that every single year, there's so much good ship. We say
that every single year we'll get We're like a quarter of the way through.
Uh Jesus. Next is down Dance of a Thousand Suns. Mm hmm.
This is good, right, this is really good? YEA like this a
ton. This doesn't make me want to play it though, No, you
don't like to be I'm listening to that bass in the background. Okay,
okay, yeah, so far listening to music. I want to play see
Stars and fire Woman Gage. I want to go back to that. Oh
you know that's also a good barometer for like best music if you haven't played
it, if it makes you really want to play it. Next we have
Battle on Parentheses Day. Yeah, I love that. H What is that
called? This is like a it's like a keyboard plug in or something lug
Earlier we had that like Becaman ex simile crash thing or whatever you call that.
I don't know. I mean this is this is really cool music,
solid and all of these and the next two especially, I would say it
all feels like super Nintendo music, which and it's hard to just replicate that,
especially as a jerky because so much of that is iconic. He did
a very good job of doing that and making it their own thing. All
right. The last two songs for See the Stars, we have Encounter Elite
Awesome. I feel like Sonic wishes he had this music. He's got some
great music. Oh this is some good ship. This is a kid.
It's like clapping, there's like guitar, like a synth tar. It's and
star okay, all right. And finally the storm calls for you. Hell
yeah, like where we're going here? Like oh man, it's like an
accordion. Yeah, wow, I can see chanty. Oh my god,
this could be myst Okay, why super Mario or that big music. I
like, wow, going forty I'm gonna get ripped it out of the party.
The Stars, how come we're not hanging out a j See Your Stars
I think is a hard lock on this list. Yeah, hard hard.
It really won me over if nothing else about the game, Yeah, the
music is absolutely incredble Yeah yeah, okay, all right, all right.
Next we have bomb Rush Cyberfunk. I hate this game, but the music
is amazing. I like this game. Well ship, yeah, yeah,
we've got them moves, got them, we got We've got them, moves,
got them, we got? Yeah, I want to fight now,
man, I should have played for screw yah yeah yeah, all that fucking
hits. Oh my god, that's so good. Oh yeah, got two
more tracks from again once again. How the fuck are we gonna do this?
Don't worry? All right? All right, next we have I want
to know whats like fucking fuck bumble? Oh oh yes, bro game,
I'm gonna go play this right now. Let the hell. I am in
middle school right now, bowling with my friends. This song comes on late
nineties and early two thousand. Stuff like that means I'm in the eighth grade,
also bowling with my friends. I'm fired for my fifth jobs. Yeah,
what the fuck? Yeah this is this is all yes, probably man,
I'm just mad. I'm mad that just can't do it. Look what

I still maintain I don't like the game, but the music is we need
to talk about that a second. I love the guy. I like the
game a lot. I don't know if I love it. I like it
a lot. Finally, from Bomber Cyberfunk, we have get enough like I
can Oh, yeah, yeah, put this music in another game too.
Yeah, please, I need to get that. I don't know too,
mellow mab this right, Oh, I don't know. You tell me,
Dan, I forget. Did you like like original Jet Grand Radio? Jets
Aid Radio. I never got the chance to play because I didn't have a
dreamcaster OGX. Yeah, what's up with this? You and you and bomb
Rush? What's going on here? I just didn't like how it played at
all. I didn't like that a lot of people and it's yeah, I
think that's that's where the disconnect happened for me. Those three songs were all
great. The third one is like a pretty decent approximation of a daft punk
so it's like not quite the best, but it's still like actually pretty good
if that's what you're going for. They did pull it off, I think,
But those first two songs, and I only I only went with these
three because I love jets Said Radio. I just haven't had the time to
actually play bomb Rush, so that's all I was able to pick out there.
But even those three were just really good. Man, God, this
is fucking great ass music, all right. I'm sad to say that A
Sludge Life two from this year didn't have as many bangers as the original one,
so that's right, so I left that off the list. Next we
have Super Mario Wonder, starting with the Overworld theme. It sounds like I'm
like in a radio shack or something. That's very okay. Yeah, well
maybe like not that the music's bad, but one aspect of Wonder that disappoint
me. As Midge, I thought the music was fine, It's pretty memorable,
but not not like over the top for me, at least the theme.
Yeah. Ye, Also the theme reminds me of the new Super Mario
Brothers. Is it that that, pa Paw? Yeah, yeah, I
get what you mean. Yeah, all right. Next we have Wonderflower Piranha
plants on Parade. Yeah, this is great. Oh yeah, I will
say this isn't a little something when you're just listening to it, so yeah,
yeah, I'm with you. This is They dropped this fairly early on
the game too. Yeah, it's a second. It's kind of one of
the best thing. They had to get this out there early, and they
really the most memorable part of the game. Okay, that was pana plants
on Parade. For some reason, I thought it was going to sound like
Bulls on Parade. Next on Parade growing up? No, I hate this,
yeah, because you hear it so much, so much. Okay,
it's a loop. Yep, it's a look. Okay, it's not a
spiral, it's a loop. Uh. Next the underground theme. All right,
that's pretty good. This is me. This is their best one.
That's bad, what dude, are you kidding me? This is the best
one in the entire game. Not much. Yeah, fuck you dude,
it's fuck. That's cool. It's person's like. Okay, gamin in my
jangles if you know what I mean. I don't know what you mean.
No, I do know. Yeah, what's all about that? So you
slept in when we were cuddling the final battle? This is also better in
context? Oh yeah, yeah yeah. I think at a certain point,
Mario music is all trying to live up to the expectations of like what Mario
music was when it started, which was kind of perfect right away with Super
Mario Brothers. And yeah, they don't always go hardest with with Mario Music,
not really. So that's why I actually want the point I want to
raise, and why I actually include I was thinking of maybe not even including
it, but I thought it was actually interesting to talk about is this music
good. It's I think it's serviceable for for for Mario is extremely forgettable,
right. I think that's the problem a lot of the two D marios,
like in the modern era, you know, the new Super Ones included and
everything like that, they just haven't had great music. I feel like part
of where yeah games still do super Bell Hill, Let's go right, like
yeah, I mean, Galaxy's got it, just banger after back. Gal
It's just it's so weird that like Mario Wander even like like we just listened
to is trying is trying to do something. I just think it doesn't quite
hit, especially with such a weird game. Right, Yeah, music,
you know, they do rely on their context a little bit. Though.
The Prana plants on Parade great when you're playing it. I think some of
these things are really good when you're playing it, But in terms of standing
out on its own as music, it's a little bit tougher. Okay,
this next one, this next game, this is me and TAM's time to
shine here as I'm going through these tracks, yep, this was my like
immediate lock. Yeah, so we're gonna do two things here if you could
fast forward to the second time stamp after I give you the cue. But
it's important to note the context here. It's a layered so where we're starting
here, you are, you hit versus mode and it starts playing, and
then it starts building layers as you go through menus Yes, Street Ritter six
three. So this is just the initial settings. Her name was play for
second layer of settings because I'm not if you can go to four, please
so much beyond. I didn't know even what they say can't be done with
my strike square, I where's my flag? This is when you're actually on
the character slide. That's cool. And then they walk out on to the
stage started from the bottom and I'll never look looking on my heads. Young
making a make that doesn't rhyme was back, Mike, you'll missen wrapping until

top of it, I'm gonna like it even more. Turns out this this

bit of Danny Elfman and all of us. I wish there was a lot
of the moment, a lot of lots of no bulow, Mike. I

end of the main theme, they did the same thing there, and yeah,
they scatter that throughout yourscaina to make you a little uneasy. That's also
you know, tying into the one gamely mechanic freakline, right yep, barely
use that. This was such a like brefalt Oly is great. I know
a lot of people did like that music. It was a bit too understated
for me. I think there's The Kingdom's music is a big upgrade. I

or you're trying to fight gravity and her fucking lolla By kicks in and then

rock. That's literally you catching her. It's yeah, man. Zelda music
has a strange kind of power over people. Though it looked like they'll they'll
they'll never like, we'll never be able to resist that kind of stuff.
Yeah, the reality is it's like years of compounded nostalgia on That's definitely a
factor for sure. But this game does actually use music better than any other
game this year. It really in terms of like putting it into its story
and then the dynamicness of how it works in the world. There are other
games that are very good at that, but this game does that really well.
But yeah, I mean, this game told a story with its music,
like the theme of the dragon, like being the two notes of Zelda's
lallah blah the whole time, and then getting to hear how that crescendos and
actually comes together there in that last moment. It just blew me away.
And we touched on this at the tippy top here. But I'm not normally
a fan of very big, sweeping orchestral music, even in film, but
for whatever reason, I don't, and I don't have the nostalgia for Zelda
either, But it just fucking hits in such a way. This is really
really good music. All right, all right, Well one's real quick Rob
Bows the name of that podcast. Yeah, yeah, so we were gonna
use a bit uh because uh, Kirk Hamilton, that's a podcast called Strong
Songs where he talks about the music and a bunch of different stuff. He's
done a bunch of episodes on Zelda. Now we were gonna take a bit
from his show and play it on here, but we couldn't get it.
But he does a great job of explaining all the stuff that makes the Zelda
music so good. In Tears of the Kingdom. That episode came out a
few weeks ago. Check that out Strong Songs from Kirk Hamilton. He goes
into great analysis, like there this one thing that blew my mind, as
you know, the item pickup sound the dude, you know, he just
like paps on do dude and like after a while you don't hear it.
But why it's clever is do to the dude any slowed down? Do do
do do? A play a different key? Doude do do do do?
It's the main theme. Yeah, that's how there's a cohesion to the whole,
and that cohesion is throughout everything and in Tears of the Kingdom especially,
But I mean there when you get the Master Sword, for example, you
pull that out. The one of the little themes that plays alongside of all
the other music is a phase theme from a Skyward Sword assuming like like,
and it's like, man, they're just using it all. They don't just
use them like the most obvious ones. They use the entire part of the
buffer. All right, all right, let's say let's save this to to
the what after we've listened to everything? Stop getting excited? Next we have
Michael hymes Octopath Traveler too. How can I get excited? Starting with Boss

Ellen Wake just not my kind of game, so I've barely touched any
of it. Is there music while you're playing to like any degree? No,
Well, there's one part where it's like a big part of the thing.
You basically like play and walk through a bit of a music, right.

and that is what they do. I think that's why it doesn't quite

games just kind of doing similar things. But I like the Final Fantasy sixteen
and Octopas travel to significantly more than exactly and they were pretty skate comes off

but about like swords, your generic Hollywood orchestral that to me, Fallers
G three is good music. It did feel a little generic fantasy like high
music. Yeah, it's got really strong moments. Yeah, but I did,
I did actually really like the final I thought that was very Yeah,
that's amazing, and then shout outs to that for sure, like street Fighter
six because I don't think I like it quite as much as Sean and Tam
does. Yeah, I'm willing to cut it because I think so there's stronger
elsewhere. Yeah, in comparison to the our ones, I think, yeah,
definitely. Okay, let's for the audio listeners, let's go over what
we have left so far. Well, we have left for best music,
we have Sea of Stars, Bomber Cyber Funk, Legend of Zelda, Tears
of the Kingdom, Michael Hims, Octopath, Traveler two, and Final Fantasy

Was it sound very very good? Very much? My damn. I think
out of those five, I think Final Fantasy sixteen is absolutely amazing. But
in terms of like this five that we have here, it's really good.
It's so much better than a story, right, like it. The best
the music is the music. When that mid Boss was theme first hit and
I was playing, I'm like, I think I really like this game,
and then I played more. I'm like, I really like the music,
that's what. It doesn't really have anything to do with the music, but
it's just hard for me to not think about that composer soaking working on that
game, well, working on Fantasy fourteen while like battling cancer during the Oh,
it's just incredible, incredible. It is the music to Darker. Yeah.
I can just never give that man enough flowers for all the incredible music
that he does. I like, if I could say one thing negative about
what we just heard, well, I've been very similar, right Yeah,
Yeah, I think that's maybe the biggest knock against it. Yeah, I
really liked See Stars when everything was hitting, But does it measure up to
games Octopath travel too hit me the hardest. I don't know if I'm alone
on that. I like, I mean, I kind of like Stars is
very specific takets going for I like that Octopath Traveler to stuff and it's very
good. That is the specific flavor of Jerpy g music that I've heard a
lot where it's a lot, and I like how it's a lot. And
again, I don't even want to saything bad, but I like it a
lot. I think Stars is different in how it is specifically going for that
S n E S vibe really effective ways. I like when games still go
for that and don't feel they need to always have the orchestral style even though
it seems to be that it's right. Let's say I think we probably aren't
going to have both Seed Stars and uh Final Fantasy sixteen and Octope. I
think that sounds right because they're similar, uh Wheelhouse. I know they're they're
very different sounding, but it's that vibe to do like a quick like good
everybody, let's do that. But like when to make bomb Rush and Zelda,
those are hard locks? Yeah, we're looking for, if anything,
if that's the hard locks. I kind of agree, Yeah, I think
those are the hard locks. I think it's very hard to see Zelda come
in off this and bomb Rush seems like a sure thing. Yeah yeah,
okay, well I'm gonna just make those green Okay, okay. In between
Final Fantasy sixteen, Octopath Traveler two and see a Stars, right, see
Stars on Octopathy, where we could we do a roll call just on those
two real quick? I'm curious way on what one Stars and Octopath well might
as well. Throw up Final Fantasy sixteen as well, because I would say
neither, because I would pick sixteen over both. Oh okay, interesting,
