00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: Cooper Flagg won the Rookie of the Year over con Canipple. I've been saying all season long that I thought that he was the obvious choice. Doc Rivers, when he joined us at the end of the season, said, boy, you got to understand how con Canipple changed the Hornets. He kind of changed their whole mindset and had that kind of impact on the team. Now, I had not heard that before, and I thought, Okay, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he surprised a lot of people. We expected Cooper Flag to be really good, if not great. Conk Nipple was like, man, that guy's pretty good. He's one of those guys when you watch and then you watch again and then you go, no, he's just good and one of the best shooters in the game. We saw that and they made the playoffs. Now, I think what hurt him that play in game where he played poorly and I don't know if votes were in by then. They're supposed to be regular season. It's a regular season award. But Reggie Miller set a couple of weeks ago he was taking back his Rookie of the Year vote for Kankinipple because late in the season and certainly in that play in game, he did not play well. Now, I don't know if other voters abandoned ship with Kankinipple, but it was still a really tight race. Twenty six point gap between the top two players for a Rookie of the Year. That's the smallest since the current format began in two thousand and two. That was between Amari Stodemeyer and Yao Ming. You know, kan Kinipple set the rookie record for three pointers. Cooper Flag was so much more than that when you watch Dallas and I don't think he got enough recognition for the season that he had. He wasn't just a singular specialist as Kan Kaninemple. Now, Canipple is a really good player. He's one of those guys where you say, man, he's a little more athletic. No, he's athletic. He kind of sneaky. No, no, there's nothing sneaky. It's just con Kin Nipple can play. I'm gonna blame Pauli for this. Paulie is the king of He's kind of sneaky athletic. 00:02:10 Speaker 3: When he got to do. 00:02:11 Speaker 4: Conn is like, well, he doesn't look like he could jump much. I don't know how you don't look like you could jump. 00:02:15 Speaker 2: Yeah, he can play, he can play. But Cooper Flag with what he did this year, everybody knew, you don't have Kyrie, you don't have ad, it's Cooper Flag. You were gearing up for Cooper Flag. And the guy put up tremendous numbers. Twenty one points, six point seven rebounds, four and a half assists, one point two steals per game. You know, he's just a little bit older than Lebron was when Lebron came in like six days, and he put up numbers similar to Lebron. Flag averaged more points, more rebounds, less assists, and less steals than Lebron did. He's only nineteen coming into the league, and Lebron was nineteen as well when he came in. It was just Flag went that one year to Duke. He should have been his senior year in high school. But he's playing as a freshman at Duke. But some of the other numbers, like Wemby's numbers were awesome twenty one ten, three and a half blocks per game. Luca had great numbers Blake Griffin when he won Tyreek Evans had good numbers. Kevin Durant averaged twenty Tim Duncan twenty one, twelve and two and a half blocks. But those guys were, you know, Tim Duncan played four years in college. Alan Iverson came in after a couple of years at Georgetown, averaged twenty three and a half seven assists, seven and a half shack was twenty three and a half and fourteen rebounds, three and a half blocks per game. He had spent a couple of years in college as well. But I thought, and once again I changed my vote. When there was the Grant Hill Jason Kidd Rookie of the Year race, I changed it that morning. I was at NBA Entertainment and I was doing Legends of the Game, Greatest games in NBA history, and I kept going back and forth, back and forth, and it added up. It was a tie. The Rookie of the Year award was a tie between those two that year. I thought that there was going to be a tie this year. Not that they would have been an actual tie, but I thought, you know what, maybe you give both of these teams, both of these players, the stage, the recognition former teammates as well. But Cooper Flag was the best rookie this year and he was far more than just that. At when you say to a nineteen year old, go out there and you got to get twenty five a night. We need you to score. If konk Nipple hits five threes, we go man. He added to his three point total. Cooper Flag had to go out and win games. Con K Nipple didn't have to win. And look what he did in any other year, you know he might win a Rookie of the Year. Not this year. Cooper Flag was the best rookie by far in my opinion. 00:05:14 Speaker 3: Yes, Marvin, and I think Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis being out serge his Workie of the Year candidacy because he had to put up those numbers. Now, if you put up the same numbers as Kank Nipple did the eighteen points, he would have been Rookie of the Year easily because the Mavericks would have had a way better record than they did the season. 00:05:32 Speaker 2: Yeah, and Cooper Flag wouldn't have put up those numbers. I thought he was going to be a fifteen to eight probably five guy at the most and all of a sudden, it's like, no, no, we need a whole lot more. We need a whole lot more from you. We need like everything you got. And if you're putting up forty points in a few games, he had a few games where you know, thirty and ten. You know, those things don't happen. So what he did was pretty spectacular. 00:05:59 Speaker 3: Yeah, he's probably more comfortable in this position because ever since he could touch a basketball, he's been the go to guy on his team. 00:06:07 Speaker 2: He had six games with at least thirty points, five rebounds, five assists. That's one more than everybody else in the rookie class. Combined. Stat of your Day, SAT of the Day, that past stat of the day, stat of the day. Here here comes that what stat of the day? Stat of the day, Play of the day, all of that forthcoming. One more note on Cooper Flag averaging twenty one six point seven rebounds, four and a half assists per game. So he joins Larry Bird, Michael George, and Luca as the only rookies since nineteen seventy to average those numbers per game. And you know, when you think about Bird was probably twenty four when he came in. Michael would spend a couple of years in college, and uh, Luca, I don't know how old Luca was when he got here. Was he twenty Marvin? 00:07:21 Speaker 3: I think he was twenty, but he played like eight years professionally, YEurope, So. 00:07:25 Speaker 2: Did he did? All right, Dylan? What kind of poll question you got for me today to start out first hour? 00:07:31 Speaker 5: Well, Dan, I was going to ask who deserved the NBA Rookie of the Year, Cooper Flag or Konkinentl. 00:07:36 Speaker 6: But it sounds like that's pretty cut and dry. 00:07:38 Speaker 2: Yes it is. If you took out that little run that. 00:07:40 Speaker 5: Cooper Flag had at the end of the season though he went like the fifty forty thirty game. 00:07:45 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I can't all right apathetically like he did it? No to do it? No, he did. He did it, so I can't take that out and show me rookies hit the wall. All these rookies normally hit the wall. They talk about it. There's certain number of games. I don't know what it is. You know, it might be sixty games or fifty games where they hit the wall. They're not used to playing this many games in a season. The fact that Cooper Flag was that much better at the end of the year tells me an awful lot about him. 00:08:21 Speaker 4: Yes, Bully, I had that wall you talked about in March when Cooper Flag got the game fifty. For the next three weeks he averaged nineteen points a game. That was a dip because he was aired like twenty two before that, but the last three weeks of the season he averaged twenty nine points per game. He also led the NBA in minutes the last three. 00:08:39 Speaker 2: Weeks this year. Yeah, I mean, this isn't a normal nineteen year old and he's not sneaky athletic. He's not. He's he's gonna be great. And I think if you watch him play now, you know I'm going to be a nitpicky here. I didn't like his jump shot when he was in college, and but those are things you work on. I thought that, you know, he wasn't a knockdown shooter. I'd love for him to study Kevin Durant and kind of get in that comfort zone in that two point range. Now, everybody wants to shoot threes, but I think he'll be able to get his shot because he can beat you off the dribble, he can take it to the hoop. But I thought his jump shot was a little slow. And once again I'm just netpicking here, but you get those go to moves that everybody knows what you're going to do and they can't stop you. That's when you know you you elevate your game too. He's going to go over there and he's going to take the jump shot, or he's going to go left and beat me off the dribble, and you know it and you still can't stop it. That's the fun part. When you watch younger players, what do they add to their games? Speaking of adding to their games, Detroit needs to add somebody who can score. Because Kid Cunningham, I'm looking at usage. There's only two players who have the ball more. Their usage rate is higher than him. Man, I think what Orlando was doing is just we're going to make you work for everything. Caid Cunningham has to work for everything, and they don't have that second score. That's part of the problem here with Detroit and give Orlando credit. I mean, that was nineteen nineties basketball last night. The entire series has been that way. But Detroit relies on Caid Cunningham too much. He's the only guy who can get a bucket. Jalen Durhan he can get points, but usually pick and roll or offensive rebounds putbacks. But if you look at great teams, the thunder have SGA and Jalen Williams, Celtics, Tatum and Brown, Nuggets, Joker Murray Warriors when they won, Stephen Clay Bucks when they won, Giannis, Chris Middleton, Lakers, Lebron and ad and turnovers are killing Detroit. You have twenty turnovers last night that created twenty three points for Orlando. It wasn't pretty, but you don't get extra points for aesthetics. It's go out there and win a game. And when people say playoff basketball is different, if you watch last night, that's playoff basketball. Everything matters. We're gonna make you know. This is where you know you have to win this game. If you're Detroit, you're down three to one. Now you have to win that game. Last night, so every possession matters, and the physicality was on display last night, and Orlando didn't back down. I think we think of Detroit as you know, that's a rough and tumble team. Orlando did not back and they didn't play well. Jalen Suggs made one more basket than I did last night. Powl Bancaro had four baskets last night and they won. 00:11:53 Speaker 3: Yes, Mark, And the difference is they have guys like Friendz Wagner and Desmond Baine who can get you buckets. And the thing is the Pistons are looking like the first lebron Stant Cavaliers team, where it's him and a bunch of guys. Especially in the playoffs. We're gonna stop you and make Tobias Harris try to beat us. 00:12:12 Speaker 2: Yeah, Tobias hair is maybe five years ago, but I don't want him to be my second option. But you're watching Kad Cunningham and Orlando is basically saying you're not beating us. Everybody else has to. 00:12:26 Speaker 4: Yeah, pauling the magic player Franz Wagner, as I like to call him. In the past twenty four hours, I've heard him called Franz Wagner, Franz Wagner, and then Franz Wagner. I'm not sure which one is right. 00:12:38 Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with the Wagner. Yes, Like if I was Franz Wagner, I would. 00:12:43 Speaker 4: Go with that, because otherwise it's Frank Wagner. 00:12:45 Speaker 2: Which, Yeah, Frankie Wagner is not scaring me. Franz Wagner is like whoa, whoa, whoa, who is this guy? It might be a umlad in there. Yeah, sounds like somebody who is performing a concerto ladies and gentlemen. Franz Wagner, Yes. 00:13:01 Speaker 3: Martin, and I was shocked. I think he was a lottery pick. 00:13:03 Speaker 2: Yeah. 00:13:04 Speaker 3: Frank Wagner goes in the late second round. Yeah, Franz Wagner is a lottery pick. 00:13:10 Speaker 2: Franz Wagner sneaky athletic too. My god. 00:13:14 Speaker 3: It is the worst when they're like, oh, man, conquad, it will sneak You don't sneak upout anybody. If you go to Duke, you don't sneak up on anyone. I know you're a top five prospect, Yes, Paul if Frank Kaminski from Wisconsin. 00:13:25 Speaker 4: Were Franz Komenski, he would have been multi time All Star. 00:13:29 Speaker 2: Damn, no doubt he's a good player. Franz stretch four. Alrighty uh did you come up with a pole question? 00:13:38 Speaker 7: Uh? 00:13:38 Speaker 5: Well I put that one up, Dan, just to see what the people were gonna say. But uh, we could also have another NBA poll if you remove the thunder, who's winning the title. 00:13:48 Speaker 2: I'm gonna take my spurs, you know. With Wemby back. Although I've been praising the Celtics since gosh, probably November with the Jayla Brown with what he's done. I love watching that team. They're fun. They got a lot of different players that can come at you and score. And I don't know what the East how it's gonna, you know, shape up. But if Detroit gets knocked off, you know, I know there's always the element of the Knicks in there. But you know, you're kind of looking for who is that really potential great team, good team, good ish team. Boston's really good? 00:14:30 Speaker 3: Yes, Mark, is there going to be like an Indiana Pacers type of run for another team where it's like they made the finals? 00:14:37 Speaker 2: Who would it be. 00:14:39 Speaker 3: That's a great question. 00:14:41 Speaker 2: Like is Orlando going to be the Pacers this year if they would happen to win this series. 00:14:46 Speaker 3: I mean, you're not scared of anybody in the East. You're not scared. 00:14:51 Speaker 2: Yeah, you shouldn't be. I don't know if anybody gets scared of anybody, Like who gets scared? You're never gonna hear some but he go, Man, we're scared of the. 00:15:02 Speaker 3: Well, you know what, they were a scary team, like the Thunder. That's a scary thing. 00:15:05 Speaker 2: You know what. 00:15:06 Speaker 3: We're not scared of him. I don't think we can beat him. 00:15:09 Speaker 2: Maybe you're it's scary how good they are, But they don't scare you. Correct, yes, yes, I mean they're grown man, They're not like, come on, you gotta come out of the locker room. 00:15:19 Speaker 3: No, that's the worst part about the whole Michael Jordan myth mythology. Man, we were scared of that, the Michael Jordan. You were scared. Reggie Miller coming up soon was not scared of Jie is not. 00:15:30 Speaker 2: No, you can't be scared. John Starks wasn't afraid of Michael Jordan's. 00:15:34 Speaker 3: Right, these guys were taking them to seven. They never got to seven games in the finals, but he sure did an Eastern conference. 00:15:41 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wap. 00:15:52 Speaker 8: Stick gots here. Have you seen the movie yet? 00:16:58 Speaker 9: I haven't. These days playoff slow down so I can go see what. 00:17:07 Speaker 10: But I did run into I was in the restaurant last night or yesterday morning here in New York and Lorentz Tate, the actor who plays Barry Gordy in the film. 00:17:18 Speaker 9: And from all the reviews I've been reading about the film, I heard his Barry Gordy is spot. 00:17:24 Speaker 10: On, so I am excited. But these playoffs they got me right now. 00:17:30 Speaker 2: And then Jermaine Jackson's son plays Michael Jackson. Yes, yes he is. 00:17:37 Speaker 10: I heard he is the reincarnation of Michael. And then they make sense because I guess he's always been around Michael, obviously younger in his life, so the mannerisms from what I've been hearing and reading are there. But I will give you a bird's eye view after I see the film, unless unless you've seen it. 00:17:59 Speaker 2: I have none seen it, Okay, and I have not seen it. Did you ever meet Michael Jackson? 00:18:04 Speaker 9: I never met No, I never met him. 00:18:07 Speaker 10: Went to three concerts in my life. Two were the Victory Tour. This is right after the thriller came out, came out like the mid to late eighties in Dodger Stadium when I didn't. 00:18:23 Speaker 9: Have any money. I still don't have any money, but when I really didn't have any money. 00:18:28 Speaker 10: And then I went to the thirtieth anniversary of CBS. CBS did a special right before nine to eleven, I believe that weekend in Madison Square Gardens. 00:18:41 Speaker 9: So those were the three Michael Jackson concerts. 00:18:43 Speaker 3: I went to Yes Mormon on that thirtieth anniversary show, Michael Jackson doing Billy Jean, and you can see Reggie as clear as day, showed the photo of the baby crying. Eyes were like, I had the hat off he did. 00:18:56 Speaker 9: Yes, I was like groom, he was jamming DP. 00:19:00 Speaker 2: I didn't know that they had you on Cameron. 00:19:03 Speaker 4: Oh. 00:19:03 Speaker 10: It was a vibe that everyone that was anyone was in the garden that weekend. But that night it was in Sync performed, Usher, performed, Britney Spears perform. 00:19:18 Speaker 9: It was. 00:19:18 Speaker 2: It was unbelievable Reggie in the garden. Tonight, the atmosphere won't be the same tonight. Punk said the next tip. 00:19:27 Speaker 10: Off, Well, why wouldn't it. I'm coming to do a game, why wouldn't it. 00:19:31 Speaker 2: Be eight Eastern NBC and Peacock. What happened to your Pistons? To my Pistons, I don't know, They're not mine. 00:19:43 Speaker 9: Look, you had a sense coming into the playoffs. 00:19:50 Speaker 10: I know they played great down the stretch, and I know Kate was out for quite a bit of time, but he came back. I believe he got two or three games in during the regular season to get quote close to that quote, and then I think he won his Arportracian case. But the one thing and the one question mark was their shooting all season long. Their defense was great, they had a unbelievable go to guy obviously in Kay. They had a great number two option in Jalen Durham, who's been terrible in this series. But to me, it was always their shooting and right now, the playoffs always brings out the warts and all your teams, and you're seeing that when a team like Orlando the only shot what from three last night? 00:20:41 Speaker 9: Again they were at home though, and they still win. 00:20:44 Speaker 10: That shows you the struggles that the Pistons have shooting the basketball. 00:20:48 Speaker 2: If you're going to be a championship caliber team, you have to have another score. Yeah, and if I look Sga and Jalen Williams, Tatum and Brown, Joker, Murray, Steph Clay, Giannis, Chris Middleton on a dal like you just Detroit doesn't have that guy. It's caid. Orlando is just gonna beat him up, make him work for everything, and his usage rate is really high, and they basically just wear him down. And Orlando didn't play well at all and ended up winning that game. 00:21:19 Speaker 10: Yeah, and again it's not like they can't go home and win Game five and come back and win Game six on the road. It's something when you win sixty games, you have the ability to go on the road. But I think they'll find scoring at home because your support players played better at home. I believe they win Game five and then they're just gonna roll the dice. 00:21:40 Speaker 9: And I mean, they. 00:21:42 Speaker 10: Had their chances to win Game four last night, but again the pressure of Orlando. Orlando's a really good defensive team. 00:21:49 Speaker 9: And they're playing with so much confidence right now. 00:21:52 Speaker 10: And again I had question marks about them coming into the playoffs that last regular season game in Boston when Boston sat everyone and Boston throttled them. And that was the difference between you know, the seven and eight and all that, and people had question marks, but then they got it right in the play in situation and now they're on the cusp of being an eight team knocking out the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. 00:22:21 Speaker 2: The Denver Nuggets last night won, which I expected. Devincenzo not there and is out as well. Can, like, do you like Denver's chances to be able to still win this given the injuries? I do? 00:22:39 Speaker 9: I do. 00:22:40 Speaker 10: I think now Denver's dealing with some issues as well. Aaron Gordon didn't play last night for them, And look, it's one game and they're a championship caliber team. 00:22:53 Speaker 9: They've got a three time MVP. 00:22:55 Speaker 10: Can they go into Minnesota win Absolutely? But like I just highlighted, your role players played much better at home and Dosulu who was great in that game, four who had forty three points, bones Highland. I mean, these guys are going to get an opportunity without Dante being out, and I don't see ant Man coming back in this series. So it's one game. Can they win it? Absolutely? But Minnesota is a very difficult team to win at home, so that should be a fun game to see. 00:23:29 Speaker 2: Talking to Reggi Miller, he'll be on the call with Mike Tarico tonight the Hawks at the Knicks Madison Square Garden, Chip Off a Eastern on NBC and Peacock. Did the voters get it right with Rookie of the Year? 00:23:41 Speaker 10: They did, But I want to tell you where Con lost it. When the league set out that arbitration and they were hearing the arguments for Caid, they were hearing the arguments for Luka doncts if they could be a part of those end season awards. You didn't have to have your ballotce back at the end of the regular season, which. 00:24:03 Speaker 9: It normally is. 00:24:05 Speaker 10: So that bled into the playing games, and I think voters saw the struggles of Khan in those two games, and I think. 00:24:14 Speaker 9: That hurt him. 00:24:16 Speaker 10: If the voters had not seen those two games and the votes had to be in, I think you saw how close it was. So obviously he was knocking on the door of winning that award. But I just think those games in the play in affected some voters, and to me, that's where he lost it. 00:24:36 Speaker 9: I love both guys. 00:24:38 Speaker 10: I think both Cooper Flag and Khan Kinnipple will be in this league for a long time. 00:24:43 Speaker 9: They both will have great years. 00:24:45 Speaker 10: I would have probably liked for it to be co We've seen it before. But I have no problems with Cooper Flag win it. But to me, I think Con lost it with those playing games and the votes not having to be in. 00:24:59 Speaker 2: And it up and you garnered some headlines when you thought, you know what, I got a factor in these playing games with Khan Knipple and that probably cost him some votes. But you look at Cooper Flag like his rookie year is Lebron's rookie year? Yeah, pretty much right there. Man Shack was twenty three and a half and fourteen rebounds and three and a half locks his rookie year. Iverson averaged twenty three and a half. Duncan was twenty one and twelve kd averaged right at twenty. Blake Griffin had an unbelievable rookie season twenty two and a half and twelve rebounds. Luca as well and also too. 00:25:45 Speaker 10: I think you and I who we kind of talked about this, is it more of an individual wards or do you factor in team success? I was factoring in team success because of what Con had meant to Charlotte, and Charlotte was on that run, especially second half of the season. But if you just go back two years ago when Victor on it, the Spurs weren't great. Last year when Stefan Castle on the same team of the Spurs, they weren't. 00:26:12 Speaker 9: Winning and they and he got, you know, the Rookie of the year. 00:26:16 Speaker 10: So you can't really factor in winning in terms for the rookie of the year because most of them are on bad teams. But I just wanted to give Con some love because I just thought the turnaround in Charlotte was great and he had a big part to do with it, but he was more of a supporting player there, whereas Cooper Flag had to do everything. In Dallas. He was getting the best defense each and every night. Con wasn't. So I can see the case we both Again, I love both players. Both were well deserving. But I'm happy for Cooper Flag. 00:26:53 Speaker 2: Yeah, I again. Doc Rivers said that to me a couple of weeks ago. You got a factor in the culture that changed when kan Ka Nipple got there and they made the playoffs. But you know what it's like when you are the guy every single night. Cooper Flag was at nineteen every single night, and you don't have Kyrie Eight's gone. You have to play well, have to Hornets could win and con didn't have to play well. Cooper Flag had to play well. And I know we tend to kind of massage these arguments of well, how did the team do well? Wait a minute, did you factor it in previous years? 00:27:34 Speaker 9: Well? 00:27:34 Speaker 10: No, but not for Rookie of the Year we did. I think for the MVP we do a little bit. 00:27:40 Speaker 9: Team success. 00:27:41 Speaker 2: Yeah it should matter, yeah, as it should. 00:27:44 Speaker 10: But for Rookie of the Year it really doesn't matter. And in Cooper's case, as much as what you just highlighted. Not only did he have to score yeah, ever was what eighteen nineteen points? Again, but setting the table for everyone else. I mean, Jason Kidd was brilliant as putting him as a point forward. He took his lumps early, he figured it out. That's why he's Rookie. 00:28:07 Speaker 9: Of the Year. 00:28:08 Speaker 2: Flag averaged twenty one just under seven rebounds, four and a half assist. Those are basically Lebron's numbers. In fact, he averaged little more than Lebron with points and rebounds. There best rookie you ever saw was who. 00:28:27 Speaker 10: I would probably say again, I'm a homer growing up in California. Magic Johnson's rookie year and how that extended into the playoffs and. 00:28:39 Speaker 9: What he did. 00:28:42 Speaker 10: Coming off of, you know, a national championship at Michigan State. 00:28:47 Speaker 9: Magic could do no wrong. 00:28:48 Speaker 10: In my eyes, I just idolized him growing up in Riverside and watching the Lakers and what he did in the early. 00:28:57 Speaker 9: Eighties and throughout all of the eighties. 00:29:00 Speaker 10: Obviously when he was a rookie in seventy nine eighty, that's probably the best rookie that I personally was of age and be like, oh my god, that's amazing six' nine point guard and he just changed basketball because we had never seen a point guard at six. 00:29:15 Speaker 2: Nine what was it like the first time you played, Against. 00:29:18 Speaker 10: Him well you're talking about professionally or LIKE, at UCLA because i played against them FIRST. 00:29:26 Speaker 2: At, ucla yeah the summer. Pickup games the. 00:29:28 Speaker 10: Summer pickup games because you don't want to be a, fan BOY but, i Mean That's, matthew johnson, you Know Is, virus Scott Is, michael cooper all these guys that, you know, you idolize and now you get a chance to be to share the. Same court so you tried to play it cool and you tried to pick up all. 00:29:46 Speaker 9: The tricks THAT'S what i tried. 00:29:48 Speaker 10: To DO and i was just fortunate that they like took me underneath their wing and showed me all the dudes. 00:29:53 Speaker 9: And don'ts did You? 00:29:55 Speaker 11: Guard magic did you want To? And all That magic and larry were, big six' nine six' ten and being. 00:30:27 Speaker 9: Able to pass and handle it. WAS just Amazing to. 00:30:30 Speaker 2: Watch i THINK magic's underrated because when i talked when if you mentioned, GREATEST players of all time, I can factor in college i CAN factor in changing the nba? Winning what five titles there his, name is, not Mentioned it you know it's, mike and then lebron. 00:30:49 Speaker 9: Right and then. 00:30:51 Speaker 10: Karanem is sprinkled in, THERE but Then after that i think magic is. 00:30:57 Speaker 2: But it, Feels like they you know Kobe. Is, SOMETIMES mentioned before magic. 00:31:03 Speaker 10: Look i, hear, a lot you KNOW obviously, living in The la area you Hear kobe being the. BEST laker, of all time I, mean obviously You, got kareem You. GOT shack you got magic i mean The history there with the lakers, is amazing, and rightfully so Because yeah you could put. Kobe IN there as well but i just think magic a. Lot of times gets overlooked but. That's because he was said, people'll understand, how how great not good how great magic was, in terms of winning. 00:31:37 Speaker 9: Games, of JUST winning. 00:31:39 Speaker 2: Games okay if i say, You can start your Team, I'm gonna give you Lebron. Batman, was on That team yes So? 00:32:48 Speaker 2: Did kobe ever become batman. SHAQ was on the floor. 00:32:55 Speaker 10: I would, probably say that third championship So That they went. 00:33:02 Speaker 9: Us New jersey and was? 00:33:05 Speaker 10: IT philly the third one i would say that that Third. 00:33:08 Speaker 9: One when they beat philly that's When. It was probably two batman's. 00:33:13 Speaker 2: But is that when it. Went started to probably crack. 00:33:17 Speaker 9: Probably, man if those, Guys uh, You know. 00:33:22 Speaker 10: What i'm glad i'm glad i'm glad that he didn't like one another, they broke. 00:33:26 Speaker 9: Up because seriously you can make a case they're. 00:33:29 Speaker 10: Arguably the greatest Duo ever you Could put scotty. IN and michael In there i would put, magic and a downsized Career but You Can, Go Magic, In. 00:33:41 Speaker 9: James worthy big game james that was. A, heck Of a Duo. 00:33:46 Speaker 2: Yeah it's Kobe and shank kobe. 00:33:49 Speaker 9: And shack have to. Be, the greatest duo. 00:33:50 Speaker 2: Ever Like, there's no answer for shaq and there might Not be an. Answer for KOBE as, well BUT if I okay So, i Got jordan and pippin So scotty's Got a Guard. Shack and Mike and kobe But then Shaq's gotta guard Scottie. And kobe's gotta guard Mike I'm. 00:34:13 Speaker 9: Still, going, WITH shaka kobe. 00:34:14 Speaker 2: Yeah yeah i Went to. 00:34:17 Speaker 9: I'll go WITH shaq and kobe. 00:34:21 Speaker 2: If i THERE'S no scenario where if i said The, first ten years of jordan in the first ten, years of any other player would you take any other Player? First, ten Years over jordan no because jordan didn't start to win though until, he was what twenty eight. 00:34:38 Speaker 9: Until his like seventh, Or, eighth year. RIGHT now no SIXTH. 00:34:42 Speaker 2: Year i Would Say I would take. Kareem like kareem's rookie year didn't he average like twenty? Eight and, fifteen or something, you, know it was like no he nobody had ever seen something like that before twenty. Nine and fifteen is rookie you're. 00:34:58 Speaker 9: Still the, toughest shot. TO ever guard you know i, would GO. J. LIKE this m j karan. 00:35:13 Speaker 2: I love, PUTTING you, on THE spot. 00:35:15 Speaker 9: I know and. Come On LET'S. 00:37:18 Speaker 2: Do it that's red g miller will Be On the, Call With. Mike Jerico Tonight hawks nicks fox sports radio has the best sports. Talk lineup in the nation catch All Of our shows at foxsports radio Dot com. And WITHIN the iHeartRadio app. Search fsr to listen live we spent a good portion of the show talking About What's. Going on with brendan soresby He's a Transfer from the university of Cincinnati And, now he's with texas tech and now he's gone into. A rehabilitation program for gambling he is probably has first. Round Talent as a quarterback texas tech paid over five million dollars reportedly in the transfertal And, there are reports that, cincinnati where he was before, knew that He was gambling and at Indiana reportedly. Was gambling on indiana football even, Though He didn't play much michael. Pennix Was the starting quarterback dan wetzel, whenever there's A College, SCANDAL we called, Dan Wetzel Espn Senior. Writer college, game day podcast all righty what do we? Need? To know about this dan. 00:38:28 Speaker 7: So it's an interesting one because there's no allegation, of, any, kind, of fixing, shaving fixing yeah. Prop bets anything like that this. Is not A criminal, investigation IT'S an ncaa investigation and i think that's important a because it's limits The trouble that that. Mister soresby would be in but it's it's really more of a it's a different and modern where he just, liked to wager on sports which, enormous numbers of people do and some. Do to, a problematic, level, we're talking, you know allegedly. You know thousands Of Bets he would bet, cincinnati reds, pitch by, pitch you know. A dollar something like that we've. Heard that kind of reporting we'll see, What the full details are. We'll see where, this leads but right now it is really just that he, was gambling ON different sports which the, ncaa Prohibits in most cases and the particular problem would be. Back in twenty twenty two he's Allegedly Gambled on. His own indiana hoosier team he was. A freshman at the time he. Probably played in one game he was going. To red SHIRT that season but the ncaa has a clear line that says you can't, bet on your own teams and so that in twenty twenty three they put a rule in that would Be permanent banishment from colle you'd lose your college. Eligibility if you do that this took. Place in twenty twenty two we'll. See how that plays out, there's a lot, Of stuff but generally Speaking I'm gonna expect that brendan SOROZBY'S not going. To play ncaa football again HE might, play in the naia level HE. MIGHT go to the nfl i don't know what, he would try to do but it's. Certainly a very big Scandal It's important going. For texas tech next season it's a sad story of a kid with a young man. With a ton of potential he's gonna be paid four or, five million dollars this Year Reportedly, to play for texas. 00:40:29 Speaker 6: Tech and he gambled it all away. Using a sports betting. 00:40:33 Speaker 2: App how did the story break. 00:40:38 Speaker 6: That WE don't fully know. 00:40:40 Speaker 7: The ncaa is, investigating it and you know one thing about these integrity monitors and the different systems they have to, catch people IN different states and the ncaa has AND as well AS the nba and the, nfl and all of those it's really not advisable for an athlete to. Try to beat the system and so we don't know right. Now how they got them but if you, Remember A few Years Ago jamison williams. Of detroit lions got suspended he was he was making a what would be a legal wager as LONG as it wasn't an nfl allowed and certainly illegal. In terms of the law wager would have been allowed if he was not if he Didn't do, It at the lion's facility but he Did do. It at the, lions facility and you know they can track like exactly where you are when. 00:41:29 Speaker 6: You make this. 00:41:30 Speaker 7: Bet and things like that so the technology to catch. These guys is pretty good and so we're not quite, sure how it all began or, how they Know so much or whether soorsman's just come clean because he was going. To get in trouble anyway. But, THAT'S where, we're at yeah i. 00:41:46 Speaker 2: Know it's a bigger picture i'm usually surprised somebody who's. In, college who, doesn't bet certainly you know you got kids who, were nineteen, twenty twenty, one twenty two twenty three and IT feels like it's probably i think the number was sixty percent. A couple of years. AGO it's, probably seventy five i mean, it's so commonplace to bet like you're in the, minority when you don't bet and it's so. EASY to BET as well i just i, hope moving forward these sports certainly, college have safeguards in place because it, used, to be we thought well the kid, who doesn't have any. Money he's the, vulnerable one prior to nil this kid had five million dollars and he's the vulnerable one. In a situation like that? Can college, athletics safeguard, this. 00:42:36 Speaker 6: It's hard it's. 00:42:37 Speaker 7: EDUCATION and it's, just hoping i, mean there like you said it's so. Prevalent and on two levels one so you're in the dorm or you're hanging out, with the guys or whatever and everyone is, doing it, and every college you, know the percentage of college young. College men or young men gambling, on sports apps is enormous and So you just kind of it's like going To. A derby party on saturday you, may not bet on horses but you'll bet on it because. You're at the derby party Or you. Buy a, SUPER bowl square you know, i Don't gamble on. Football but i'm at. Here i'll buy a. SQUARE right everyone's doing it i want to. Be in on the fund you. Can see where it goes and then the technology right now is completely altered. The way sports wagering works you, had to have a. Bookie had to call ahead you go only picking winners. And losers in a game now, you're picking, bet by bet you know pitch by. Pitch at a baseball game and it's not just that you have more, opportunity to Win or lose but the i've done a lot, of stories on this stuff. 00:43:39 Speaker 2: The, way. 00:43:41 Speaker 7: Your brain will work and the way that interacts with endorphins and the way it fires to, a particularly a younger brain where you're getting, this almost every thirty. Seconds this high or low it just accelerates. The POSSIBILITY for problematic gambling now i have no opposition. To GAMBLE or ANYTHING else but I think i can, acknowledge i'm a free, individual liberty kind of guy but you can acknowledge that this is a totally different amount of technology changes the possibility that someone. 00:44:12 Speaker 6: Could get, addicted very quickly. 00:44:13 Speaker 7: So again he wasn't doing anything that. Most college kids aren't doing but most college kids aren't getting paid five million dollars a year. To be the quarterback either and so you're not a normal college student and. You have to know that and the reason that you can make this much money, play in college sports now the. Reason, you have a scholarship ever the reason this whole operation goes is. Because, fans love college football well fans aren't going to love college football if they think. That the results are compromised so you have to be. An adult at this point if you're going, to get paid like this you're. Going to be a Pro you have to understand i'm, part of this team also and even putting out the impression that something could be untoward could affect the bottom line for all. 00:44:55 Speaker 6: Of us in this industry and so there's. 00:44:58 Speaker 7: A lot of angles here it's an itch interesting story to me because the it's the it's one of the first that doesn't involve the shadowy figure that's trying to compromise, that we could have had that we did. 00:45:08 Speaker 2: Have in the nineteen fifties good, To, Talk, to you again dan well. Next controversy will reach out 00:45:14 Speaker 6: I'm always here for, You Always here for you dan wetzel
