Speaker 3: And that brings us to the park's first pitch. First pitch by Parks, our partners and friends at Parks Casino, right off of I ninety five and State Road. Guys, I'm gonna set the scene for you Monday night. The Phillies are leading three to one going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Johann Rojas comes out of the dugout, runs out to center field. Brandon Marsh moves from center to left. Max Kepler moves from left to right. Nick Castiano's taken out of the game for defensive purposes now comes out. On Tuesday afternoon, before the game, Nick Castianos made some quote inappropriate remarks to Phillies manager Rob Thompson. So Rob Thompson benches Nick Castianos onto Tuesday for those comments that he made in the dugout on Monday night. After agetting being benched for defensive purposes.

Speaker 3: Before the game on Tuesday said, I wasn't happy about it. Spoke my mind. He said, I crossed the line. So my punishment is I'm not playing. It's his decision. He's the manager in terms of being taken out of the game. Interesting stuff from a team that has not had a lot of clubhouse. I guess controversy over the past few years. You know, guys get upset here and there with different things. But this is the biggest example of it really since Rob Thompson has been manager.

Speaker 1: No, It's the first instance I can remember him having a kind of lean on Although he leaned on Bom last year that was pretty public in the postseason, benched him question to his energy, So I think that was pretty significant. And this is, you know, right up there with it, maybe even you know, above it in terms of attention grabbing, although it's hard to the attention of the postseason is pretty intense, but you know, it's it's Nick's hometown. He had the streak. And then obviously Nick reacted emotionally in the dugout in front of people, and you know, I think you're the manager of the team. You can't let something like that slide or everybody's going to start pulling it on you. So I think Rob did the right thing. You can't disrespect the manager like that and without there being a consequence, and there was a consequence, and I think baseball wise, it was a it was a text book sound move correct. And if you look at the defensive metrics, I mean on Fangrass, Castanos is a minus ten and defensive run saved it's like last among regular outfielders in Major League Baseball. And I think there was some recency in in Rob's mind because if you go back to last Wednesday, they beat the Cubs at home. It was the game when Lozardo got back and pitched really well, ten strikeout snow walks. There were two balls hit the right field that were playable that were not caught, and rob was asked about them both in the postgame press conference and he admitted that they were both playable. Both. You know, he said Castianos maybe got a late jump on one overran the other, but you know, he didn't. He didn't just sweep them under the rug as oh, you know, they were just plays that He made it clear in these he was responding to a reporter's question, but he said basically said both should have been caught. And I think, you know, that was just four games ago from when he lifted Castianos on Monday night, just four games prior, so I think that was in the back of his head he had spoken to Castianos that there's a chance I might do this because I got Rojas on the bench with a bunch of left handed pitchers coming up, and he he employed the strategic move. That's his job to put the best nine on the field. And sometimes it's not just at the beginning of the game. Sometimes it's situationally during the game, and that is the card he played, and it was a sound baseball move, and you know, the player who was on the short end of it didn't like it, said something the manager didn't like the manager, you know, Satam and maybe that's it. We'll see.

Speaker 5: So this is interesting because on Sunday and I was doing the post game, the same situation came up. He finished the last, he was the last I think passing was one of the last hitters in the bottom of the eighth and in the ninth they were up one run, and I said to myself, Okay, I got to believe that for defensive purposes, Rojas is going to center, Kepper's going right, and Marsh's going the left. He didn't do it, And I thought to myself, sometimes he doesn't do that with a one run game because he still wants that bat in in case it gets tied up. But with a two run game, which is what that situation was on Monday, I absolutely think that's the right thing to do. They have one average to above average everyday defensive outfielder, and that's Max Kepler. He's the only guy who is at least average and in his case above average in the corners. I think Max is an outstanding outfielder. He got a ball caught up in the lights yesterday and I'm sure that sucked for everybody because he couldn't make the play and everybody thought, well was he doing? You know, he makes that play every single time if the ball doesn't go into the lights. Believe me, I've been there, I've done it. It's the worst feeling in the world when he can't see the baseball and he just took it off his body. I have to say that the move that Rob Thompson made is perfect, especially in that ballpark, to over a two run lead or over a one run lead, get the best defensive players there and go.

Speaker 5: You put your best defensive team out there, as Jim set And no disrespect to Casianos because the balls I sort of liken him to to burrow as far as a defender is concerned. When he gets to the baseball, he catches it, but he doesn't have the range and the overall foot speed that other people have. Marsh Kepler on the corners, Marsh very good corner outfielder, average to blow average centerfielder.

So it should have been much of a surprise to Casianos if he was out of that game. And for him to do what he did, no idea what he said. He probably had to disrespect to me a whole lot to get pulled out of a game the next day. Because Rob Thompson is not like a He's not a knee jerk guy. He's a very level headed man. But at some point you have a breaking point and you can't be embarrassed by your players. And uh, what he did probably was embarrassing and disrespectful, and it's the right thing to do, get him.

I also understand on Casianos side, Hey, I want to play. You know, I don't have any problem with the guy wanting to play. But you also there's a level and there's a place time and a place for things. And if he had was displeased with what happened after the game, you have a chat with him and you go from there.

Hey, you know going into the postseason, you know, if there's a one run lead, a two run lead late in the game, would you take Nick out of the game? And pretty much he's kept them in there all nine innings, one run lead, two run lead, three run lead, ten run lead, whatever the case may be. You know, because because Nick is while he's improved his defense, I guess.

Now, you know, I believe in a lot of some of the new metrics, but the defensive ones, they're they're all all over the place sometimes right, But I just want to tell you what the metrics say, agree with them or not. So this season, Jim, you mentioned Nick castis defensive run saved that's you can find that on fangrafts and elsewhere. A negative ten, like Jim said, that's last among fifty eight qualified outfielders. Defensive run saves Nick cast downa since he got to the Phillies in twenty twenty two, negative thirty eight. That's last amongst all outfielders. Brian Rentls is second worst at negative twenty five, so he's thirteen. It's a thirteen run difference compared to the next worst outfielder. Defensive run saved outs above average, that's the Baseball Savant stacast metric. This season, he's negative eight out of all players defensively all positions, He's tied for two hundred fifty fifth out of two hundred and fifty six players. He's last among one hundred and thirteen outfielders, the last since he got to the Phillies. He's negative thirty one outs above average. Only Kyle Schwarber and Monso are worst. So the metrics say kind of what the eye test says. Again, he catches the ball Like you said, Rubyen, he catches the ball. You also mentioned Pat Burrell. I see a lot of similarities there as well. You know Pat Barol would get to a lot. He would catch the balls he could get to. Yes, not have good range. I also want to mention something about Pat Parol. Though Pat Pearl in two thousand and eight, did that guy finish a game?

I was a very emotional GM. If I was upset about something, I would wait for a day to express it. I did it as a coach. I did it as a GM mostly very rarely did I, you know, pop off to a manager or and or a you know, coworker or whatever until I had some time to think about it. But you know, again, emotional game. But there's a time and a place for everything. I don't have any problem with the Castanos being mad to be taken out of the game, right, But there's a respect factoring. There's a time and a place for everything.

We'll see what kind of happens down the road from this, But you have any initial concerns that this could fester or become a big part of a bigger problem as the Phillies try to win the World Series this year.

Yeah, and they didn't get one, and that was that was disappointing. So I don't know if it's gonna fester. And I will say this, I hope it doesn't because I think they have a chance of doing something special this year, get in the October tournam and get hot, you know whatever. So I hope it. I hope it doesn't fester. Thompson's pretty good at handling things quietly in the clubhouse. He's very good at relationships and in relationship building. He's had good mentors, starting with the best in the business at that and Joe torri Ye. I covered him. I covered him, and I watched him handle situations like this. So it's a test for everybody. Hey, here's a test. I hope they pass.

Just a bit of a head scratcher because I know there was the tip in, but hey, three of the last four have not been good, extenuating circumstances in those two. But you know, last night, he just he didn't have a quality outing against a team. Honestly, he should have man handled too many walks, especially those two walks in the sixth inning. Now you hand it over to the kind of the middle of your bullpen, which it just doesn't you know, I don't think it strikes fear into the opponent. It was a I thought it was kind of a game they could have should have won.

Used to be like once the once the gates were open, you had to wear a certain type of you know, a certain type of uniform.
