00:00:04 Speaker 1: Hey guys. Today's Oscar Recap is brought to you by Boost Mobiles. What's happening, everybody? This is a special episode one of our IROL WEEKLI is a little bit different today because we are talking about the Oscars last night. There are so many important moments to discuss and even to discuss where IRL is connected. 00:00:23 Speaker 2: Like we feel very. 00:00:25 Speaker 1: Strongly on this podcast about a couple of people that were having an amazing moment last night at the Oscar, So we shall discuss. 00:00:32 Speaker 3: Do you remember actually when we interviewed Tiana Taylor back in twenty twenty three, you know that was her I think one of her first like her kind of like her acting debut in a Way for one thousand and one, which is a great film. But you know in our trailer how you introduce her is actually you say future Academy Award winning Teanna Taylor. 00:00:52 Speaker 1: Yo, I'm putting it out there. I'm really like, you know what I mean, manifesting things for people. 00:00:57 Speaker 2: It happens. 00:00:58 Speaker 1: There's a clip back back in the day of me talking about people having babies together. It's like it happened like three times. So I was like, you guys gonna have a baby and then they had a baby. It was like three times I put that on somebody and it happened. So, yeah, she didn't win the Oscar, but she did get the nomination and she got all the glory of that moment, and. 00:01:17 Speaker 2: There was just so much you could just tell. 00:01:19 Speaker 1: She's like francing around in these amazing outfits in her glory, like she's I don't know, she's just in the space that she's worked so hard to be. And I think winning the award sure is nice, but I think it's beyond winning the award. It's just like filling up and being in the space that you're supposed to be in life. I feel like she's arrived in that space or without an Oscar, she's arrived in the space that she's worked so hard to be. 00:01:43 Speaker 2: You could totally tell how happy. 00:01:45 Speaker 1: I mean. 00:01:46 Speaker 3: I don't think there was anyone more happy just to be at the Oscars than Tianna Taylor was. You know, her category came really early on in the Oscars last night, and when she lost. 00:01:58 Speaker 4: To Amy, her weapons that girl, the camera pans to her and you see Tianna jumping on my up and down. 00:02:05 Speaker 3: Oh my god, you thought you thought for a second, like, did Tianna just win? 00:02:10 Speaker 2: That's her way of. 00:02:11 Speaker 1: Showing like she's just that's to me, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's like she's just happy to be in this moment. She's happy to be sitting next to Leo, happy to be in this class, happy to be making art that I'm sure she's super proud of, and you know, sitting next to her mom, who's been on this journey with her whole life. 00:02:29 Speaker 2: I mean, she gave her her journey, right, but like I don't know, just the whole thing. See, and Michael be Jordan there with his mom, there was like a lot of love. And maybe it's just. 00:02:37 Speaker 1: Us, maybe we're biased a little bit, but like I just felt like it just felt like a lot of love was present yesterday watching Michael B. Jordan when that award, sitting next to his mother and he's been a working actor since he's a kid, and the fact that he said I could feel everybody's wanting me to do well, Like I felt that deep, Like because I feel that sometimes, like sometimes we'll do something and I'll meet people, they'll be like yo, even with the pod, they'd be like, I love the pod. So much, and I could feel that they wanted to do well, that they want me to do well, and that's such a great feeling. 00:03:11 Speaker 2: I can only imagine for. 00:03:13 Speaker 1: Him, with like more than half the world rooting for him to have this moment, what that must feel like. 00:03:19 Speaker 2: And then he wins it and he's sitting next to his mom and then he goes to in and el Burger after, which was so it wouldn't love him enough like this. The whole thing was just really nice to see. So, yeah, it was a special moment. 00:03:33 Speaker 1: But one of the things I wanted to talk about, and we are going to play some clips to refer to some of these episodes that we're talking about, but one of the things that I loved seeing last night was, you know, there's a new category category for casting director. There is watching the cinematographer for the woman who won for Sinners. 00:03:52 Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, I don't watching. 00:03:53 Speaker 1: Her when you know it really and a lot of people in their speeches refer to like filmmaking, it's not the star. It's not just Michael B. Jordan, Like Michael B. Jordan, Yes, he won an oscar and that's amazing, God bless him. But if Ryan didn't write that script, if his wife didn't produce it with him, if that cinematographer didn't make it look the way it looked like it really is. And it really takes a village, is what I'm saying. And to see some of those people in the village be acknowledged that to me last night was super dove. 00:04:25 Speaker 2: I love saying that. 00:04:26 Speaker 1: I love seeing the people that you know make the village. And so there's a lot of that going on last night and totally and by the way, congratulations to Ryan because he didn't win for Best Screenplay. He didn't win the Director Award, but he will at some point. To Marty Scorsese, I don't know how many films before he got one. Ryan's gonna get one. But I was glad that he won screenplay. And then some of the post interviews, man the way he talks about his wife. Can we just before I get into what I have to say about that, do we have any clip from this episode that refers to that at all? 00:05:03 Speaker 5: Yes, I got an imagining wife who's been with me, knowing me a long time, and it's always very honest with me. It's very smart. 00:05:13 Speaker 2: So I keep her around and. 00:05:16 Speaker 5: Let her in on everything I'm doing, you know, so she can kind of give me perspective when I'm trying to stress. 00:05:21 Speaker 2: She can tell me, yeah, you should be worried or not. 00:05:23 Speaker 1: You trip me, you know what I'm saying. Lots to love about that clip number one. As also a fellow workaholic, I understand the concept behind that. I love hearing that from him, but also just the way that he respects and honors his wife and even when people try to give him. 00:05:37 Speaker 2: Credit for that. 00:05:39 Speaker 1: You know, sometimes I hate to see this, but like sometimes people be. 00:05:43 Speaker 2: Like, oh, it's to waste the way you talk about. 00:05:45 Speaker 6: Your wife, like if he's doing her a favor. You know what I'm saying, Like, Oh, it's nice you let your wife produce the movie. And people don't say that, but there is a tone sometimes that people say something that makes I don't know it, like diminishes, diminishes her importance, and she is always the first one to check that. He's like, oh, it's not a favor. Oh no, I'm grateful to have her be part of this film. Oh, this film doesn't happen without her. 00:06:10 Speaker 1: You know. 00:06:11 Speaker 2: I love the way. 00:06:11 Speaker 1: He checks people in terms of the tone in which people refer to his wife. 00:06:16 Speaker 5: I tell y'all, I'll tell you a quick story about about Zazi, and y'all should just know, man that this movie, you know, big credit to her and her and said our partner, man, but it wouldn't be what it was with all her man, and she did it all pregnant and postpartum most of you, like like I seen her. She was. She was in every she was in every post production meeting, man like like like like holding it down and dealing with all types of stuff. You know, the only y'all could see. We took the film on the roads all over the world while she was out there here y'all sawry Man, it wasn't easy and then and it hasn't stopped, you know what I mean all of this since you know, our little baby's seven months old now and she and she and as good as a producer she is, she even better mom so that shear do all this. 00:07:04 Speaker 2: It's crazy, but but but. 00:07:10 Speaker 5: I'm gonna I'm gonna just I'm gonna just leave y'all one insight into her brilliance. 00:07:13 Speaker 2: Man Like, Like we were dealing with some. 00:07:14 Speaker 5: Stuff at home and and two family members were kind of at each other's throats about I bought, I bought some things and I and I did what I did. I vented for like forty minutes to her about you know, who did what and why why we gotta do this to support who and and she took a deep breath when I got done. Then in her in her crazy zingy way, and she says, you know, sometimes it doesn't matter who's right. What matters is that people know that the other person cares a ball. And I and I had you know, I'm a writer. I heard a lot of words. I listened think about words of the time. I lived with this woman for a long time, and I never heard those words put together like that in that context. 00:07:58 Speaker 2: And I was I was like, God. 00:08:00 Speaker 5: Damn, man, you want to one and I and I and I felt like one on one for bagging her. You know you know what I'm saying, Hi, hey, hey, hey so so so so, Look yo, hey, so'm. 00:08:21 Speaker 2: I see all the comments. 00:08:22 Speaker 1: Everybody's like, I pray for us all to find this world so and that. 00:08:28 Speaker 2: That's the dope thing about Ryan. 00:08:30 Speaker 1: It's like he very he pays attention to the detail of He's such a truth teller, Like you know what I'm saying that, even like a false tone about his wife, He's going to check that fast. And I just appreciate that so much. And I think that's what makes him a phenomenal storyteller. Is this, like the music is always going to be the right music, the tone, the laugh, the way you ask the question about my wife, and we're gonna get that right because you know it's sometimes it's in the little thing so are framed. And I just appreciate that about him so much. One of the reasons why not only is he one of my favorite filmmakers, but I just think he's super dope as a human being. I don't know his wife, I've never met her, but I'm like her for number one fan, for his love bag as the couple, and it's just so nice to see that type of love, you know what I'm saying, that type of work relationship too, by the way, because because he'll he'll tell you himself that that movie wasn't what would have anybody was without her on it. 00:09:30 Speaker 2: So that was really nice to see. 00:09:32 Speaker 7: Uh. 00:09:32 Speaker 1: And then also a quick little clip of Michael B. Jordan at In and out Burger after the awards. 00:10:02 Speaker 7: Now, back up, back up, back up. 00:10:48 Speaker 3: Remember the part in his speech where he says to his kids, I'm sorry that this is causing us to be, you know, spend so much time away from you. 00:11:06 Speaker 2: But the one thing I hope when I'm long and gone is that I leave you with good memories. 00:11:13 Speaker 6: I was weeping, was so emotional. 00:11:18 Speaker 2: What's wrong with us? It's so evil? 00:11:21 Speaker 1: But that's what I mean, because it was actually there was so much genuine love happening. 00:11:27 Speaker 2: I don't know, it was just yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Why? What were we gonna say? 00:11:32 Speaker 3: I think you can relate when you put that much, when you really care and love about love your work that you do. You know how much how much it takes to make something good, to make something great. 00:11:45 Speaker 1: Yes, by the way, speaking of making things, I posted recently, you know, I posted a clip that I finally that I shadowed my boy Stephen Cable Junior on the set of Man on Fire. So I posted this thing on Instagram that I have secretly been new filmmaking for the best. I don't know four or five I feel like since OVID honestly doing masterclasses, doing lessons, shadowing people, asking a lot of questions, doing research, reading books. 00:12:11 Speaker 2: All of that. Brittany, Brittany too. 00:12:13 Speaker 1: Brittany's been on this journey with me, the two of us, and so I shared a post of how I was able to follow Steven in Mexico City on the set of Man on Fire, which is getting ready to come out, which I'm very excited to see. But I was there when he was directing an episode in Mexico City. Now, Steven, who well, who's an amazing filmmaker, also friends with not only is he friends with Ryan Brian, I believe kind of put him on to Creed two because you know, Ryan did Creed one, Stephen did Creed two while I believe Ryan was doing Black Panther. Anyway, I say that's all that to say. Ryan Hoogler went to USC, Steven Cable Junior went to USC, the person who won Best Document Entry last night, USC Film Student. 00:13:05 Speaker 2: I don't know what we gotta do. 00:13:09 Speaker 1: I don't know if this is like an online program or something, but whatever they're doing at the Film School at USC, because you churning them out over there. 00:13:21 Speaker 2: But yeah, film makes an interesting, beautiful I don't know. 00:13:26 Speaker 3: Kraft in and Out after this Oscars, the in and out stock is up at usc Is being flooded with applicants. 00:13:34 Speaker 1: For sure, that was happening as it should. 00:13:41 Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a great night. 00:13:42 Speaker 1: What else Tianna Taylor, I know we talked about her not winning, but she she looked incredible. 00:13:47 Speaker 2: She had an amazing night. 00:13:49 Speaker 1: I'm certain I love seeing her there with. 00:13:52 Speaker 3: Her mom as Women in Filmmaking for sure autumn winning Best Cinematography for being the first woman to ever win in that category. And when she tells all the women in the audience, she's like, if you're a woman. 00:14:04 Speaker 2: Stuff, that's so good. 00:14:08 Speaker 3: That's so good, And I'm so glad that because you know, sometimes people call out to the audience and they're like, you'll put your hands together or whatever, and people don't oblige. 00:14:17 Speaker 4: You're like whatever. 00:14:18 Speaker 2: But when they zoom. 00:14:20 Speaker 3: Out the camera to show everyone standing up your life, dang, that's how many women are a part of this industry and without their influence, Like. 00:14:29 Speaker 1: Then, they all and they often go unnoticed. They all usually behind. Even the woman who won for wardrobe Best Wardrobe. I was thinking about my friend Tiffany. Shout out to tiff the stylist. You know, she'd been doing this for years for all types of shows and films and projects, and she she don't get that type of recognition, but she'd be right next to the people making films. And I was watching the woman who did win for wardrobe. 00:14:54 Speaker 2: I think it was for Frankenstein. 00:14:55 Speaker 3: Yeah, spectacular freaking stock wardrobe is spectacular. 00:15:00 Speaker 1: Yeah, So for that, for her, or and for all can you imagine my friend Tipity, for all of the many, many women behind the scenes that have been working at this ten twenty thirty years to finally be recognized as it's pretty I mean all that cause for water works, all that was very emotional yesterday. 00:15:22 Speaker 4: I love to seeing you one. 00:15:24 Speaker 3: I think an overall overall theme for it is like, well, yes, of course that takes a village, but also doing things without recognition, like still maintaining motiv motivation through throughout it, without getting like you know, that pet on the back, because there's even after an Oscar, after a work win, those women are still going to go back and you know, do the same great level of work. And some people are there and they're never going to get it at all. So the Oscars is a nice but it doesn't how. 00:16:00 Speaker 2: Can it be honest? 00:16:01 Speaker 1: Even the normally you watch the Oscars and you say, the big celebrity wins the Best Actor, best Supporting Actor, best whatever, and everybody's like, those are the moments. I don't feel like those were the moments this year. I feel like the moments were the people that were behind the camera, the people that don't me were the moments that I got most emotional when she went on of who's been a cinematographer for I don't know how many years makes the whole all the women in the room stand up, or the woman like I said, who won best wardrobe, or just any of those moments, like or the agents. I feel like there was a moment with agents and you know, just all the casting directors, yeah, and the casting director who you know, people spend their whole life hours loose, sleep, lovese like and built a craft, a valuable craft that sits quietly kind of in the shadows while these big productions are made and then the actor goes and gets the spotlight and gets the awards, But it's it's to people behind the scenes, it's the village. And to me that those moments last night were the most special moments at the Oscars. Those are the ones that got me a little watery eye more than anything. And then of course Maryana, it's amazingly I'll forever cry for them. 00:17:17 Speaker 2: But yeah, I hope we see more of that. I think that was super dope, and the theme of it takes a village. 00:17:23 Speaker 3: But it's also like what God has for you, like that timeline is way above you, like he's already whoever up there, whatever you believe in, that already hasn't figured out. Like you're taking a Tiana who has been working since she was a teenager a baby. 00:17:40 Speaker 4: She goes from music artist to quitting music to picking up a camera herself and creative directing all. 00:17:47 Speaker 3: The way to now and you know, now she's getting that recognition. 00:17:52 Speaker 4: And then even a Michael B. 00:17:53 Speaker 3: Jordan, who started off when he was also a kid from going from the Wire right said now he finally commercials. 00:18:03 Speaker 1: And what they broke together as a team is even that even the friendship of these two men at the awards together, having that grand moment together after Fruitville Station, after Creed, after Black Panther to be here during Sinners, I mean, it's really like, come on, this is this is. 00:18:24 Speaker 2: Pretty spectacular stuff. 00:18:26 Speaker 1: And then and then for them to be real ones let's be honest. You know what I'm saying, Like, no, seriously, Like it's not a small thing. And I think for me, that's half of the more than half of the joy. Like it's said, that's a real one right there, man, look at that. That to me is the most inspiring part of it. Because there have been people successful in Hollywood. There have been people who have broke boundaries and knocked doors down, and that's cool, but like to be. 00:18:58 Speaker 2: A real one and do it, to me, it is a different level of success. 00:19:05 Speaker 1: To maintain who you are, where you're from, the people you came up with, your beliefs, your your vision, your art, your storytelling is so pure and honest, and then you do it that way under those circumstances. That to me is like, that's the most inspiring it could get. And so when Ryan Coogler is concerned, that's how that's that's what I feel. 00:19:28 Speaker 2: What happened. And Mike two and Mike two he's. 00:19:31 Speaker 3: So real that he won't even be on the voting committee committee for the Oscars because he's like, Nah, I don't want to. 00:19:39 Speaker 4: I would feel bad judging my my peers art. 00:19:43 Speaker 1: No, he didn't trying to tell you he is a real one. We are going to start with Ryan Coogler fan Club here at the Marking and Viral podcast. And by the way, guys, if you have not watched this episode, please go back. It was before Sinners? 00:19:54 Speaker 2: Was it right before Centers? 00:19:55 Speaker 1: Why? 00:19:55 Speaker 4: It was way before Centers. 00:19:56 Speaker 1: Actually he was working on Sinners, right, he was like working on it, right, but oh yeah, he was doing the project with. 00:20:05 Speaker 2: The basketball project. 00:20:10 Speaker 1: But it's just it's an insight into him as a human like and as a creative And I really love that episode. And now, granted we could be biased because we are, like I said, we we do fancy film and we aspire to be filmmakers and we're in that creative learning space right now, and so maybe we're a little biased, but I just think there's so much to learn about that the way he navigates through his world, and and he's just super dope and like I said, a real one. So definitely worth an episode worth watching if you haven't caught it yet. Also, I highly recommend one of Britney's favorite episodes ever on ir OL podcasts, Seanna Taylor. 00:20:50 Speaker 2: Right, I want to miss speak because your favorite ones. It's definitely one of mine too. 00:20:54 Speaker 1: Whenever everybody asks, you always refer to that one. 00:20:57 Speaker 3: Yeah, because I always appreciate, Like, if you want a glimpse of it, just watch the trailer on the on the Angie Martinez I R L page because you can. 00:21:06 Speaker 1: Go out with the girl. Let's go out with both their trailers of this episode. No, seriously, it's like we take time on those trailers for the pod. We like after the episode, I'm like, what do we learn from them? What did we talk about? And then we make a trailer based on that, and so it's the it's the what we think is in the episode, and it's just a sample. It's the tiniest little sample ever. But I'll give you both of those on the end of this so you can do it, so you can check those episodes out anyway. There's also a new episode random not Oscars related. Well, June Ambrose was at the Oscar party looking fabulous. The June Amberls are our past episode and there's some beautiful stories from June to about learning to deal with grief after losing her mom. She she shares the story about j and B and we don't really get to hear a lot of intimate stories about J and B and the way she the way she shared it that I thought was it's pretty great. Anyway, another episode can get a check out. 00:22:00 Speaker 2: That's your drop, all. 00:22:01 Speaker 1: Right, So let's promise. I'm gonna leave you with these two trailers, two episodes that you could check out as it lates to the Oscars, But feel free to check out whatever episode you like. Just make sure you subscribe and tell a friend, and I'll be back on to Wednesday with. 00:22:13 Speaker 2: A new episode. 00:22:14 Speaker 1: So hopefully you'll check that out. Thank you boost Mobile, thank you Bret, and we'll catch your soup. 00:22:23 Speaker 2: It feels like a real moment, doesn't feel like that? 00:22:26 Speaker 8: Yeah, it definitely feel like the moment. 00:22:31 Speaker 1: You joke Academy Award winning to Yanna Tailor. 00:22:39 Speaker 8: Because being strong woman is not by choice, you know what I'm saying. So it's just like to go to set twelve hobbles a day and be able to just like pour out and cry out loud every single moost you've seen in the movie What's Real? 00:22:51 Speaker 2: What's on your mind? 00:22:51 Speaker 1: Feel like something's on your mine right now? 00:22:53 Speaker 2: Okay, yep, you just went somewhere. O don't know. It's a weird thing that's what I'm saying. 00:22:57 Speaker 8: I feel like we're talking about a lot of shit that I never really talk about, you know, being on the front end of things from fifteen, nobody ever really got to see my struggle. This is Tianna Taylor in real life. 00:23:12 Speaker 5: I'll just be trying to survive, man and be able to sleep at night. I grew up loving movies, not knowing that I would eventually like discover a passion for making them. You know what I'm saying. He was so intention like, so present, you know what I'm saying, And I don't know if that was just who he was or what he was dealing with. 00:23:34 Speaker 2: Hollywood is not competitive, No, it's. 00:23:36 Speaker 5: A lot really yeah, just power and finding out what you love. Like I found what I loved in a roundabout way. I thank god I was like open to it. 00:23:54 Speaker 1: Hey, guys, thanks for watching. Make sure you subscribe, like comments, and check out all of the other episod foldes we have on Edge. Martinez I R Podcast
