Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: Our two on this Monday, Best and Worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked you didn't like. I didn't like the fact that Dylan, on his first day as a Dan ed showed up late and then he blamed it on carpooling with a couple of the back room guys coming up with excuses already, Dylan, welcome to the show.

00:00:25
Speaker 3: It's no an excuse, Dan, It's a reason.

00:00:29
Speaker 2: Fritzi is here, the Minister of humor, Dylan is here. Marv Pauliers truly. We are en route to Pittsburgh coming up after the show. Reggie Miller will stop by a little bit later on today. Fernando Mendoza joins us on Wednesday morning and got a lot of questions for him. And I don't know if he's been told that he's going to be the number one overall pick, but he has to play it cool because the NFL says, don't reveal who you're taking, or if you're going to be the number one player taken. You don't lead on that you know anything. But he's already met with Tom Brady, so I'm assuming if you're going to meet with Tom Brady. You're going to be the number one pick in the draft. But we'll talk to him coming up on Wednesday. And I know people get upset whenever I bring up the comparison to Kirk Cousins, just so happens they go out and get Kirk Cousins. Well, I'm comparing the styles Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza. And if I said to you, Fernando Mendoza is going to have a Kirk Cousins career, I would sign up for that. If I'm Fernando Mendoza or a Raiders fans, he's played quality football for a long time. I brought up Joe Flacco. People get upset. Joe Flacco won an MVP in a Super Bowl. I would sign up for that. But you know, everybody thinks he's Josh Allen, or he's going to be the next Tom Brady, or he's going to be the next Patrick Mahomes.

00:02:04
Speaker 4: He's not.

00:02:05
Speaker 2: Now, he might be something that's different we're always looking for. Well, he's got to be the next I don't know. He's not Joe Burrow. I mean even Tom Brady when he won his first Super Bowl. We still weren't sold on the fact that he's a franchise quarterback. Oh you know what they won with defense? Okay, Fernando Mendoza.

00:02:27
Speaker 4: Will be a great face for that franchise, an unbelievable poster child. And he says all the right things.

00:02:37
Speaker 2: It's like if Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck had a child, it would be Fernando Mendoza. He just says all the right things. He seems to do the right things. He's a CEO kind of mentality. There, a team first guy, and I think it'll be an unbelievable pick for that team, provided they serve round him so he can succeed. But he'll join us on Wednesday. And the Kirk Cousins move I think was made for a couple of reasons. I think he plays like Kirk Cousins dots. Why not bring in Kirk Cousins to help him? And you're thinking long term here, I'm sure there are other quarterbacks. Now, if I'm Fernando Mendoza, I want to be compared to Matthew Stafford because that's that's a Hall of Famer. But there's no other arm like that in the NFL. Maybe Josh Allen, But you know that's that's an incredible comparison. But we love to do that. We love to go you know who he reminds me of? We because if you say that player, well, I didn't get see him play, who's he remind you of? And then you say somebody and you go, oh, okay, And usually that player is usually really good, a Hall of Famer. But because I said Kirk Cousins Raider, fans get up with that. I'd sign up for that, Yes, Dylan, yeh.

00:04:04
Speaker 3: If I'm Mendoz and you give me Flacco's career in Kirk Cousins career earnings, I'm good.

00:04:10
Speaker 2: Yes, Kirk Cousins Hall of Fame, contract business if they do a business acumen. Hall of Fame for the NFL. Darrell Revis is already in as a player, but he would be in for contract negotiations as well. It's almost like you go in Phil Collins can go in for the band Genesis, but then he goes in as a single artist as well.

00:04:37
Speaker 4: That's sort of what you know.

00:04:39
Speaker 2: Darrell Reeves has Kirk Cousins on a Hall of Fame quarterback, but he is a Hall of Fame negotiator. All right, good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading the app. We'll talk some football, in particular the Patriots situation with Albert Breer. He'll join us coming up in about fifteen or twenty minutes from now, and Reggie Miller. In the final hour of the program. Webby knocked off the Blazers last night, game one of the playoff series. He went for thirty five and the Magic upset the top seeded Detroit Pistons, who have lost eleven consecutive home playoff games. Our stat of the day has always brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards at the Dan Patrick Show, The Dexter Lawrence Deal. A little bit more to add to that. I was told Joe Burrow is the one calling the shots in Cincinnati. He's the one that said, I got to have my two receivers signed up. He's been saying, you know, you got to bring you know, Trey Hendricks in. You got a signing, which they did last year didn't work out. And from what I'm told, Joe Burrow said to management, you gotta do something defensively or I'm out of here. I was told this this morning by a source who said that Joe has given them an ultimatum and now I thought something was off this last season. I said it a couple of times. It's weird. I see, you know, Joe Burrow is like the next Matthew Stafford with the Rams. It just felt like he's He's just like I am. I'm trying, I'm playing hurt. We got to a super Bowl. We're getting further and further away. I got these receivers who are unbelievable. I'm in my prime. Man.

00:06:22
Speaker 4: It feels like he's the.

00:06:25
Speaker 2: One saying to management, you got to do something here. And my source said that this was you gotta do something defensively or I'm out of here. The Giants have two first round picks. They have two top ten picks. They get the tenth pick and the fifth pick. Caleb Downs is the guy that they really want, whether they get him at five or they get him at ten. He's not gonna be available at ten. He's a safety at Ohio State. But you might see the Giants go after two Ohio State players, Sunny Styles and Caleb Downs. You're going to get two starters like Week one starters, which following the Giants tradition, you build with defense. Now you already got your quarterback. You've got a Marque wide receiver. Cam Scautabou is an interesting running back. But you know, if you're going to build that defense, yes, you gave up Dexter Lawrence and that's a winning now kind of player.

00:07:22
Speaker 4: Now you're going to.

00:07:23
Speaker 2: Bring in some youth with that defense, and it might be something you know in two years that we look at the Giants a whole lot differently with the new head coach with John Harbaugh. But you know, Joe Burrow probably saying to management from what I'm told, led to this with Dexter Lawrence and then the Giants having two picks in the top ten and Caleb Downs is a player. Now you could see a team going after Caleb Downs, somebody moving up for Caleb Downs. And you get a lot of the and you got to separate sometimes, like somebody's telling me something.

00:07:58
Speaker 4: Why are they telling me something?

00:07:59
Speaker 2: Now that I have people telling me things, and two of them have no agenda whatsoever. You know, one is still employed as a scout. So you're trying to go, Okay, where are we going with this? Why am I being told this, and you know that's sometimes hard to do. Earlier in my career, I didn't know sometimes when you're getting played, when somebody would say, hey, you know who's interested in Brandon Roy and I'd be like, ohoh, they would tell me somebody and be like, oh, okay, Now you're able to kind of sift through this a little bit and then see because you know the Jeremiah Love situation, it feels like there's a whole lot going on here. You know, Arizona could take him, Titans could take him, Commanders could take him. I think he's the best player in the draft. Now that doesn't mean you draft him number one because the Raiders have Ashton Genty. You know, being a running back, you know you don't take running backs in the top ten.

00:09:06
Speaker 4: But he's different.

00:09:09
Speaker 2: Of all of the players offensively in this draft who hit home runs. He hits home runs and it's not even close. But it's a running back. I'm not going to trade up to get him. But if the Titans take him, do they have an offensive line that's ready for him and that offense? That'd be the only thing that I would push back on. Is he a Saquon Barkley like, well, the Giants were a competitive team when they took Saquon Barkley. Eli was still a quarterback. And I did think Saquon Barkley was a good pick for the Giants.

00:09:44
Speaker 4: I did.

00:09:45
Speaker 2: I'm on record as saying that I think the Commanders. If Jeremiah Love is there for the Commanders, I'm like, oh my god, thank you. But that's a good team down year. They can be a playoff team. And now I've got him. I got Jaden Daniels and I got Jeremiah Love. I got home run hitters, and not many teams have those kind of home run hitters at that age. But you're hearing it's almost like you're not sure if somebody's really interested. They want to let you think they're interested. Are you interested in trading? Are they saying this they want to trade down? How much they're going to cost to move up to four? I don't think Arizona. I think it would be wrong for Arizona to take Jeremiah Love. Now that doesn't mean Arizona doesn't do what Arizona sometimes does. He's a great player, but I think he would be maybe a good player on an Arizona team. Arizona needs a lot more. Now, if you can trade out of that, maybe you get a little bit more than great, That's what I would do. But Jeremiah Love is not going to go past the commanders in my opinion. But you're going to get a lot of defensive players. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants have two players from Ohio State.

00:11:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, Pauline, it does seem that the next two or three days, the more reports air quotes you hear, it seems like bait because like the Arizona Cardinals story that they're interested in Love, feels like, let's try to drive the market for someone to go up and get Jeremilah.

00:11:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know they even talked about Arizona and Ty Simpson.

00:11:22
Speaker 4: Well, you're not taking him that high. He's not a top five pick.

00:11:26
Speaker 2: But if I can get him, I think they have maybe the thirty fourth pick. If I could get Ty Simpson, and you believe in Ty Simpsons, then that'd be a great spot for him. Ty Simpson's going to get a lot of attention here in the next couple of days. We don't know what's happening with Aaron Rodgers. I don't know if Arizona. Or if Pittsburgh says, let's wait until after the draft and then decide what we're doing with Aaron Rodgers. If Pittsburgh gets Ty Simpson, then are you more likely or less likely bring back Aaron Rodgers. It feels like the Kumbai Ah moment here with McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers is here, like, hey, everything's great. Going to reunite Aaron coming back would be co signing on Mike McCarthy and they can coexist here. But you know, doesn't feel like there's anything going on right now. And maybe Pittsburgh is saying, let's wait, maybe we get Ty Simpson. What if you don't, But it feels like somebody who's going to reach for Ty Simpson in the first round. My friend who's the scout said I don't have a first round grade on him.

00:12:38
Speaker 4: And this is the same guy who said I have a.

00:12:41
Speaker 2: First round grade on Jackson Dark and I have him in the twenties. He was right, but you know, he said somebody's going to reach for Ty Simpson. I also saw where Miami Hurricanes they reached out to Ty Simpson before or he was going to go to the draft, and they were going to offer him over five million dollars a year, so he would have been Carson Beck coming in making five five and a half million dollars.

00:13:14
Speaker 6: Yes, Marvin better team the Miami Dolphins or Miami Hurricanes.

00:13:21
Speaker 4: I'm gonna go Dolphins. I'll go Dolphins here. Yes.

00:13:27
Speaker 5: But if you're the it's getting like that with the NBA draft and the NFL draft. If Ty Simpson somehow goes at the first pick of round two, he's taking a pay cut.

00:13:37
Speaker 7: Yeah.

00:13:38
Speaker 5: The player Mullins for Yukon who decided to stay, he will make more money being one year at Yukon than being the eighteenth pick of the.

00:13:47
Speaker 4: Draft next year.

00:13:50
Speaker 2: Well, I don't know what he's gonna make at Yukon, but maybe he's only making three million dollars a year. Yeah, but I'd be surprised at that because all indications where Raylan Mullens was coming out and I saw like the late first round that I saw one maybe in the twenties. With these mock drafts, they're getting this information too. Now his dad is actively kind of doing research here, like where do you see him? You know, projection, and you know you want to get into the NBA as soon as possible so you can get to the next contract. But if you feel like and I'm glad he's staying, I'm glad he has the option that he gets to stay, and he does need more work. He needs to know what it's like to be the number one guy. That's that's the feeling that he should try to absorb. Going back, you're going to make your money now you're the guy who has to step up every single game, yes, Marsh.

00:14:50
Speaker 6: Yeah, you also don't want to be one of those guys where you're projected to be the eighteenth pick in the draft, but guess what you end up being the twenty ninth pick in the draft and you're playing for the Greensboro Swarm instead of the Charlotte Hornets.

00:15:03
Speaker 5: Yes, Pauli, like AJ debantsa guys like him are going to go one and done because the money being a top five pick is is unmatchable by Kansas or Yukon or BYU. But if you're in that fifteen to twenty five range, yeah, it's a decision.

00:15:18
Speaker 2: Well, how much does the fifteenth pick overall make? Like last year, how much did that fifteenth pick make? Because you know we are seeing players who are going to be older going into these drafts, and some of these jams in the different sports have talked about that they want a younger player coming in.

00:15:38
Speaker 5: Yes, Pauli, the fifteenth pick in the twenty twenty five draft, signed a four year deal worth twenty two point five million dollars, so approximately much five point six million a year.

00:15:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think he's getting that at Connecticut. I mean, demands had got six million, and he was best player in the game or one of the two or three players in the game. But yeah, going back, I was surprised at that, but I'd be curious what that money was to keep him there. All right, let's take a break. Albert Breer Monday Morning quarterback will join us. Coming up Reggie Miller in an hour from now. More of your phone calls is well, best and worst of the weekend. We're back after this.

It's Draft Night, lock and it's brought to you by Express Pros and we will your NMFL Draft coverage is on Fox Sports Radio.

00:17:01
Speaker 2: Best and Worst of the weekend. I'll get to your phone calls coming out. Reggie Miller in an hour from now. I mentioned source told me this morning at the Bengals situation, it feels like it's Joe Burrows Bengals that he wanted his receivers taken care of, which they did. They got Trey Hendrickson back last season didn't work out and it was basically an ultimatum of you got to get me help or I went out of here.

00:17:27
Speaker 4: They went out and.

00:17:27
Speaker 2: Got Dexter Lawrence and they gave up the tenth pick in the draft. Let's bringing Albert Breer, the Monday Morning Quarterback senior NFL reporter. Let's break down that deal, the Bengals giving up that tenth pick, getting Dexter Lawrence, and let's start with the Giants side of this, what do you like?

00:17:47
Speaker 6: Not like?

00:17:48
Speaker 8: Well, I mean I liked that they got the tenth pick. I went back to look this up. The last time a team got a top ten pick for a veteran non quarterback clean was twenty one years ago and that was the Vikings trading Randy Moss to the to the Vikings for the seventh pick of seventh rounder in Napoleon Harris. So they got really good value here. I do know that they wanted to hold on to him Dan, so I know this does hurt for them and that you know, really it goes back to the combine in twenty twenty five. After you know, having a really great year in twenty four Lawrence wanted to market correction on his contract because it was three years early.

00:18:32
Speaker 7: The Giants didn't want to said that. President months later they agreed to an incentive package.

00:18:38
Speaker 8: And then they circle back this year and you know, really they couldn't ever come to an agreement on the structure of the guarantees that sort of stuff, and so you know, the Adam Schefter tweet on him putting on a trade request I think was April sixth. The Bengals called them on April seventh and they talked for the remainder of that week, and by the end of that we the tenth pick was on the table.

00:19:01
Speaker 7: And so it's just to.

00:19:02
Speaker 8: Illustrate to you, like how hard this was for the Giants despite the great return. They tried for another week after that to to get something done with Dexter Lawrence and ultimately they couldn't come to an agreement. So for the Giants, it's an opportunity to reset.

00:19:20
Speaker 5: You know.

00:19:20
Speaker 8: Now, I think you're in a position where, you know, you get a player who wasn't happy with this situation out the door as you're trying to.

00:19:27
Speaker 7: Build a new program.

00:19:28
Speaker 8: Program is gonna be really demanding under John Harbaugh, and you have two of the top ten picks in the draft and a chance to reset with your types of guys.

00:19:36
Speaker 2: The Begels situation here and the Jet Burrow factor because it Yeah, it is felt like for the last year there has been like this undercurrent of he he wants helped, needs help, feels like I don't know, discouraged. Yeah, so I don't know. And once again this is my source saying you got to do something here.

00:19:57
Speaker 8: Yeah, I had, I had someone, I had a a GM and another team say to me yesterday and.

00:20:02
Speaker 7: This is like verpaid him. Duke had to do this for Joe Duke.

00:20:07
Speaker 8: Is their their vice president, player of personnel, basically their GM, Duke Tobin, right, And so you know, like I think there was there is that urgency, like we have to compete in the here and the now. But this wasn't haphazard for them either. You know, this is something that it was. It was looking at the draft class, it was looking at the value of the pick, and I think they were looking at what might be available to them there at ten. It probably would have been a kale of Downs or a man Seward Layne. And you know what they found was, you know, as they did their simulations, the guys they were picking at ten for them at least had mid to late first round grades.

00:20:44
Speaker 7: That's the sort of draft it is.

00:20:45
Speaker 8: So yeah, you're trading the tenth pick, but they didn't really value it that way this year, and it was an opportunity to get a guy who can be a true difference maker for them and a force multiplier. And so you know, like they felt actively have taken a room, the defensive tackle room that was a weakness last year and turned it into one of the strongest in the NFL.

00:21:05
Speaker 7: They got Jonathan Allen, who's.

00:21:07
Speaker 8: Coming over from Minnesota, is a great player for a lot of years in Washington.

00:21:11
Speaker 7: You know, they've got TJ. Slayton, who's a good depth piece.

00:21:14
Speaker 8: BJ Hill has been a really good player for them, former teammate of Lawrences from New York. And then Chris Jenkins, who is the second round pick for them a couple of years ago. They go five deep at that position now, and the hope is that that's going to make everyone better. And the way they viewed it was there's no one like Dexter Lawrence in this year's draft.

00:21:31
Speaker 7: The other thing that I think is sort of interesting here is.

00:21:34
Speaker 8: You know the contract they signed him to a deal that's effectively a three year, seventy million dollar contract that's less than twenty four million dollars a year, which you know, in an environment where Micah Parsons is getting forty six, Aiden Hutchinson's getting forty five, Will Anderson is now getting fifty, that's a relative bargain and recent history shows that guys at that position do last. Chris Jones is still somebody team's game plan around. He's going to be thirty two years this summer, Aaron Donald was dominant until you know, he retired at thirty two. So this is a guy that they feel like they can get three or four really good years out of that's going to be better than what they would have gotten a ten.

00:22:12
Speaker 7: And you know somebody that offenses have.

00:22:14
Speaker 8: To worry about the minute they break the huddle and have to game plan for the week ahead.

00:22:18
Speaker 2: Can you see a market correction for Miles Garrett if he looks around and he's like, wait a minute, I set the sack record and Will Anderson's getting fifty million dollars.

00:22:27
Speaker 7: Yeah, I think so sure.

00:22:29
Speaker 8: I mean, you know, the crazy thing is that that Miles Garrett deal was done. I think it's now would be thirteen months ago he was the first guy to break forty, first non quarterback to break forty.

00:22:40
Speaker 7: They are now seven over that mark.

00:22:42
Speaker 8: You know, it just gives you an idea of how these things are inflating now and and so, you know, I think for Miles Garrett it's you know, you're sitting back and you're saying, I could ask the Browns for that if I'm ever traded, you know, if they were looking at trading me at some point, which I would actually advocate for the Browns looking at.

00:22:57
Speaker 7: That at some point.

00:22:59
Speaker 8: But the Browns for ever to trade him going to a new team, that would probably be part of your ask. He's certainly within his rights to ask for it. Whether or not he actually does that, I think, you know, maybe we're at the point in the calendar where the ship has sailed a little.

00:23:15
Speaker 7: Bit on that.

00:23:16
Speaker 8: But you know, I don't think the idea of him asking for something with a with a five at the front of it is too far off in the horizon.

00:23:24
Speaker 2: Joking Albert Breer, the Monday Morning Quarterback senior NFL reporter.

00:23:29
Speaker 4: Let's look at the Patriots situation.

00:23:31
Speaker 2: I don't want to do it in a sensationalistic approach or titillating approach, but I do want to look at this from the football aspect of what has happened the New York Post, you know, they report that Robert Kraft tried to kill the story moving forward, there's the aj Brown potential trade that we've been talking about for quite some time. So how do you How do you cover the Patriots in a grown up manner?

00:24:02
Speaker 8: I think you just kind of consider the people involved and you consider, you know, the situation that they're all in, and it made me look like I think, you know, it's something that Mike has to address with his players, and probably today, like those players are returning for the off season program today, my guess would be it'd be one of the first things that he says. And I don't think that he's gonna, you know, go chapter and verse through what happened.

00:24:24
Speaker 7: But they have a sign up in every meeting room in that building.

00:24:27
Speaker 8: This has make good decisions on and off the field, and I think Mike can very easily address this and say, look like, I'm always asking you guys to be accountable. I'm always asking you guys to make good decisions on and off the field, regardless of how you see what has been in the news over the last two weeks. Obviously I made some mistakes, and you know, I'm standing in front of you willing to admit it to you. And you know, I think the thing about it is like, to me, those guys are twenty three, twenty four, twenty five, twenty.

00:24:58
Speaker 7: Six year old guys.

00:25:00
Speaker 8: I think they might be texting about this with people amongst each other, you know, and so like, if you don't.

00:25:06
Speaker 7: Address it, it kind of becomes the elephant in the room.

00:25:08
Speaker 8: And you know, Mike is one thing that Mike has an abundance of is is emotional intelligence.

00:25:14
Speaker 7: And he understands.

00:25:16
Speaker 8: I think he's you know, really good understanding what makes people tick and understanding you know, the ebbs and flows the players go through. And so my guess would be he'll address it right away, He'll you know, take care of it that way. Now the front of the front facing part of this, the public part of it, I'm I'm I'm interested in too, because the longer you let this go, the more it leaves open the conversation. And I mean, if the first time he's going to be available is after the draft on Thursday night, like they're going to be welcoming a first round pick into the building, and is every question now going to be about you know what happened in Arizona. I you know, I think you I think you probably want to say something before then, So like I just say, like, you know, the way.

00:26:03
Speaker 7: I've handled it is you know, I you know.

00:26:05
Speaker 8: I try to I try to be professional in the way that I talk about it, you know, as many jokes are out there and everything else on social media, and you know, and and and and and how and how it relates to to football obviously, is is the primary thing that that that I would be looking at, and how it relates to my job, and then the aj Brown thing. I think I think we all have an idea of where this is going. I think we've all had an idea of where this is going, you know, for some time now.

00:26:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, you're trying to deal with this. And I've been on vacation for the last week. But when I was on vacation, people wanted to know, you know, do you know Diana Roussini, she's been on the show. I don't know her, but you know she was always a delight when she was on the show and had information and energy.

00:26:51
Speaker 4: Vrabel I don't know Mike, but you you're.

00:26:55
Speaker 2: You're looking at this in a couple of different ways, and I'm trying to look at this football. But then You've got to look at this. How does this affect NFL media moving forward?

00:27:04
Speaker 9: Yeah?

00:27:05
Speaker 4: Does this have an impact in any way? Yeah?

00:27:08
Speaker 8: I mean, well, first of all, I covered Mike as a player, so I've known Mike for a long long time.

00:27:14
Speaker 7: And Diana I first met Diana.

00:27:16
Speaker 8: I was around you know, the Redskins a lot and the Mike Shanahan and Jay Gruden days, and she was a local TV reporter and I got to know her then, So I know, and like both people involved, you know.

00:27:27
Speaker 7: I think what it does is it.

00:27:28
Speaker 8: Puts more scrutiny on our relationships, you know, And it just puts more scrutiny on how we handle and manage our relationships were regardless of what.

00:27:37
Speaker 7: Actually happened in Arizona.

00:27:38
Speaker 8: I'm not saying one way or the other, but you know, I've thought about this a lot and how and this is before any of this happened. Like, you know, I've always sort of felt like, you know, I could be seen at a bar with a head coach or a general manager of whatever team, and nobody would really think that was weird. Right, the two of us, by ourselves, like women in our business, may not have that luxury, you know, And this probably puts even more scrutiny on those sorts of things that I view as necessary to me doing my job, you know. And I tell all the people I cover, like I view these as thirty year relationships. That doesn't mean we're not going to have ups and downs. That doesn't mean I'm not going to have to report on stuff that's uncomfortable for you.

00:28:20
Speaker 7: I've had to report on guys I really like being fired.

00:28:23
Speaker 8: I've had to report on things that have happened within the teams where I know the decision makers really well and it's not going to bode well for them that I'm reporting those things. And you try to be as respectful as you can. And like my guiding light on it has always been I'm treating these like relationships that I'm going to have after all of that, you know, and to build those relationships, Dan, And this is where I'm us bring it back around. You know, you have to get to know these people as you would anyone else in your life, you know, and so we all find ways to build relationships with these people.

00:28:57
Speaker 7: And you know, it's funny.

00:28:58
Speaker 8: I've used this with a I don't want to be crass about it, but I've used this line with journalism classes before, because I think, you know, college kids relate to this. I mean, it's it's sort of like hitting on a girl, like build a source. Building in the NFL is sort of like hitting on a girl in the bar. You know what I mean like, and here's why, because there's a little awkwardness to it, and the other.

00:29:19
Speaker 7: Party knows exactly what you want from them, and.

00:29:22
Speaker 8: So you know, you know, so you but you have to build trust with those as barriers, you know what I mean, like, and so.

00:29:31
Speaker 7: You know, you do you do your best to do that.

00:29:33
Speaker 8: And I do think like the result of this, again, regardless of what actually happened here is is there's more scrutiny on these sorts of relationships for sure.

00:29:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, I've mentioned this before that I got close to Mark McGuire and Jason Jomby and then I had to report on Mark McGuire and Jason Jomby, and I think they had they had a problem. I think it hurt them that I was saying things. I had to do my job, and it's it's something that gave me, you know, a real awakening of you can get close, but you have to let them know that there's a line of demarcation. And I don't know if I did that very well because now I'm reporting on Mark McGuire in front of Congress and Jason Jealmbie with steroids, and it affected our relationship from then on.

00:30:27
Speaker 7: And there's a job to do, and I've had this. I've had to explain this to some guys, you know.

00:30:33
Speaker 8: I remember, like in two thousand and twenty and sixteen, I reported on what was happening in the Rams building and it was a mess. It was, you know, their first year in LA and the thing was crumbling. And I remember like one of the things that kind of came out of that was the people in the building were referring to it as Rams Junior High, which was what everybody plucked from that story. And Jeff Fisher wound up getting fired, you know, two or three days later, and relationship with Jeff and a ton of other people in that building, and I had to make those phone calls ahead of publishing it, like hey, here's what I have, and there'd be like kind of the awkward oh okay, you know, and you go through that.

00:31:11
Speaker 7: And like you you you know, you know, you.

00:31:15
Speaker 8: Know, it's your job to do these things, and what I what I try to tell them, Dan, like a lot of times, you know, in the aftermath and sometimes even ahead of time, is like, look, I know it sucks that this is going to be out there, but you would rather have me reporting this story, you know, in full and responsibly than it getting out there in some other way. And you know, like I think that that's the thing that you try to get people to understand, is you do have a job to do. But if there's something that's going to get out there that's not great, and it's going to get out there regardless, the relationship that you have with the reporter can actually help you as a subject because now that it's not that that that story is going to be whitewashed, is that that story is going to get out there in a more responsible way than it might otherwise. And you know, I think that that's again like part of the give and take when it comes to all of.

00:32:07
Speaker 2: This stuff, anything happening prior to Thursday.

00:32:15
Speaker 8: I mean, I think if there are trade up situations, a lot of them are going to happen on the clock. You know, there are some veteran names floating around out there that.

00:32:29
Speaker 7: I think could be moved.

00:32:31
Speaker 8: We talked about the AJA thing that's not going to happen until after June first.

00:32:35
Speaker 4: But if you were going to bet what the Steelers are going to do.

00:32:41
Speaker 8: You know as far as like who that what, like whether they take a quarterback on Thursday.

00:32:45
Speaker 4: Aaron Rodgers situation, right, So.

00:32:47
Speaker 8: I think Aaron Rodgers is going to come back. I but I don't think they have assurances of it. And I think one thing that helps is last year's situation. They were in the same spot. I mean, you know, in May, the quarterback room was Will Howard and Mason Rudolph. Once again, the quarterback room is Will Howard and Mason Rudolph. So like, I think the one thing that people don't know about this is like Aaron has been really respectful about communicating with people. And last year, from March until he signed in June, he was on the phone with Mike Tomlin every week, and he was talking with Arthur Smith, who was the offensive coordinator at the time, periodically, and like he was respectful of what they had to do. And I would be surprised if he's not doing the same thing, which is why I think the Steelers have been relatively.

00:33:41
Speaker 7: Content and calm about this whole thing.

00:33:44
Speaker 8: And so for Mike McCarthy, I think, you know, keeping those conversations private.

00:33:49
Speaker 7: We all know how Aaron can be.

00:33:51
Speaker 8: Keeping those conversations privates the most important thing, and the same way it was for Mike Tomlin. And you know, my guess would be we get in Aaron Rodgers back in twenty twenty sixth and to me, like the tell here and maybe we don't.

00:34:03
Speaker 7: I don't think any final decision has been made.

00:34:05
Speaker 8: But to me, the tell is how they doubled down on on on on the older core. Again, like this looked on paper like the year that maybe you would you know, you would hit a hard reset instead.

00:34:17
Speaker 7: You know, with the older guys.

00:34:18
Speaker 8: They have your TJ watch or Cam Hayward's even DK metcalf is getting a little bit older, you know, Jalen Ramsey, you're they they they brought in guys like rico'dowell who's going into his eighth year at running back. They brought in Jamel Deane, a thirty year old corner. They brought in Michael Pittman, who is you know, on the at the very end of his twenties.

00:34:41
Speaker 7: From the Colts.

00:34:42
Speaker 8: So they've done things to double down on the existing core, which at least makes it looks like they're like they're like they're planning.

00:34:49
Speaker 7: To have a veteran quarterback at the Trader.

00:34:51
Speaker 2: If I sent the over under on quarterbacks taken in the first round at one and a half, I'd go under.

00:34:59
Speaker 8: I think it's Mendo Simpson in the second round, and then maybe not another one until.

00:35:02
Speaker 7: The fourth round.

00:35:04
Speaker 4: Oh, okay, I think so Simpson.

00:35:07
Speaker 8: I think here's the interesting thing with Simpson. So like I think that there's a there's an optics thing for the Jets and Cardinals here, Like say, like the Jets and Cardinals like them, right, And like I think you have to consider if you trade up to twenty five or twenty four, twenty whatever it is to get him, Now, does that take you off the market for a quarterback in twenty seven whereas if you just take them in the second round, you can double back and take another swing next year, you know. Like I think there's there's a lot of history of that, Like if you look, you know, in twenty seventeen, the Browns took to Sean Kaiser from Notre Dame in the second round, came back the next year and took Baker Mayfield first overall. Same thing for the Panthers in twenty ten. They took Jimmy Classan in the second round, came back and took Cam Newton first overall the next year. So I think Ty Simpson for someone could be a swing where it's let's get him in the building, see what he is for a year, and maybe it works and then great, we've got our quarterback.

00:36:05
Speaker 7: Or you know, he isn't.

00:36:09
Speaker 8: Quite what we want long term, and now we've got a guy who can be a long term backup for him for us, and we take our quarterback next year.

00:36:18
Speaker 2: Good stuff, Albert, thanks for joining us. Talk to you soon. Thanks Dan, Albert Breer. Monday Morning Quarterback your phone calls an our best and worst of the weekend.

Speaker 9: Happy Monday, boys, welcome back. So excited to get my sports show. Bemp me back. So much so Dan that I jumped into my pants like poly does two feet at once. So let's go, Dylan. Better late than never and best of the break. Dan hard not to mention Ry winning his second jacket in a Ry like entertaining fashion. And I feel like Rory kind of like he like liberated himself in a huge way which could be a problem for the rest of the tour moving forward. And he was taking a beating for by the way and held his ground, defeating him, defending the tour and just so, she's good to see him pull that off. So and best of the weekend and Jake Mangum of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then dude sees his jersey being worn by a little girl in the stands, so he takes the ball, motions it to her, throws the ball. Meanwhile, the ball is then bought by her brother, who hands the ball to her. Immediately she gives them the biggest hug. It was awesome, man. I mean, if that doesn't give you a smile, I don't know what will. And where's some weekend and goes to the NBA. I mean games this week and seemed like effort was optional. I mean, both the Suns and the Sixers lose by thirty and then the number one seed Pistons lose to you know, I mean on their own floor and never lebie. Most of these games were done by halftime, no drama, and I mean it was just not good.

00:39:07
Speaker 2: Yeah, can you be a bad team and make the playoffs? I I'm watching the Phoenix Suns and I just state they're just not threatening. David in Ohio, Hi David, what's on your mind?

00:39:21
Speaker 10: Hey?

00:39:21
Speaker 3: Dan?

00:39:22
Speaker 10: I got a Best of the weekend and a comment for Dylan like Buddha, my best of the weekend from last week Rory McElroy repeating at the Masters, joining Jack Nicholas, Nick Valudo and Tiger Woods to only repeat. And my comment for Dylan is just seeing how his next feeling after he got that.

00:39:41
Speaker 11: By that dog caller a bunch of times.

00:39:43
Speaker 10: Just seeing how he's doing.

00:39:44
Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you, thank you, David. Yeah.

00:39:46
Speaker 2: On the Gambling Podcast, Shane Irving was zapping the dog collar that that Dylan was wearing.

00:39:53
Speaker 4: How are you feeling?

00:39:54
Speaker 3: I'm good, Dan, I've got nine lives, so okay, it wasn't too bad. I had time to recover.

00:39:59
Speaker 4: Well, it was a not a cat collar.

00:40:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, cats only or dog's only get one life?

00:40:03
Speaker 8: Right?

00:40:03
Speaker 4: Yeah? Why is it cat's gett nine lines?

00:40:05
Speaker 3: I would flip those around if we're up.

00:40:07
Speaker 2: Tomate Sean in Daytona Beach, Hi, Sean, what's on your mind today?

00:40:12

Paulie is your offensive coordinator, your right hand man, Marv has the look and fit of your DC, always with a matching hat and sweatshirt Fritzy. Of course, strength and conditioning, and that brings us to special teams, special teams. Seaton brought so many different special pills to the team. Dylan, welcome to the big time. No one puts the special in special teams like you, my man.

00:41:04
Speaker 4: All right, thank you, Sean. I appreciate that.

00:41:08
Speaker 2: By the way, I did feel a little bad for Robert Breer that he was squirming a little bit when I'm talking about the Diana Rassini Mike Brabel situation. I was trying to do football wise, because I know everybody has an opinion on this. I'll talk a little bit more about this coming up top of next town. We'll get to our best and worst of the weekend.
