has selected their favorite games. But before all of that, we have a

I saw a Twitter thread from a u X developer that was like, it
is remarkably hard to do the traditional style menus. Yeah, moving things like
in a set power path and pattern, and it's just like you have anime
as well as you move along and you know when you move it needs to
make a sound and ringing, whereas if you've got just a cursor, it's
like much easier easy. Can you make that sound again? Okay? I

on a handheld device, companies are more compelled to put their own layer of
software on there. And the Armory crate is one of the most dogshit things
I've seen in my life. Sometimes it pops up automatically, sometimes it doesn't
hit button, and it's like, do you want to play this game?

navigate that thing. It's it's not to the legion. Go I hit the

make it easy for you to bring up games. It's just a big white
screen and has been for the last week, no matter how many times are

much else this year. They did enough in Spider Man two to make up
for you and You're and You're it's the hangover from the horizon. You know,
it's worse. It's not just a walking talk. It's like a pedal
and talk as well. This. Yeah, I feel like I feel like
both the walking talk and the stealth mission isn't as bad as we think.
Like this, yeah, I feel like the stealth mission. People. People
played the stealth mission in the first Spider Man game and when they got to
Mary Jane, they were like, oh, I have to stealth this.
It doesn't really tell you to stealth this. It gives. It says it
gives. Hair is a taser. I think what they need to say is

one was stopping me. I was more powerful as Mary Jane than I was.

Games with robot suits is getting a little out of control. Like we've already
got a few good one of those, but you know what, those aren't
out yet, so when those alternate. I think there is a general glot
of games that take places. I think space is played out now. Somehow
we've played No Man Sky. They dialed that back, like we've had Destiny
for so long, just doing match in space. Uh Stawfield is in space?
Oh? Is that why? I think Starfield is the catalyst for this.
But I feel like there was a time when people will be like this
takes place in space. Yeah. People are like, oh hell yeah,
I'm going to space now. People are like, can we just stay on
Earth please? Well, if Starfield is the one for this category going space,
I would also like to lump that in with confusing menus. Oh yeah
in Starfield, God whoa man? And like, well, that particular category
or that nominee is in nuts, like just it's one of the biggest games
on the planet and just trying to figure out I'll see where war zones at
these days, try to fucking find any platform, no idea exactly the same

When you install the video game Call of Duty Model Warfare three of a
Fox series like platform, it literally presents you forty seven different options. We
were on a destroy call and in the background I saw that. I was
like, not all Call of Duty, it's the same game. Yeah,
anyway, just I think that should be I think that's that's a lot.
That's a lot given a game. I love this year six awful men.
Yeah, great men. So that's locked and the windows thing I think is
locked. Yeah, I would like to hear the case for bad TGA categories.

going to get rid of those kinds of categories. If you want to give
games a war, it's there, head. We don't have any of that

year? I feel like the worst was like like Cyberpunk forever ago, you
know, like, is that happening a ton right now? I don't think

watching a trailer and then you're like, oh, twenty twenty five, Tam,
I think about everybody then, damn think about every Metal Year announcement,
the first trailer and like sometimes it was like three years out, you know.

online back then, so it was like, oh, this game is coming
out in three years. You would get that information from a fucking magazine and
be like okay, cool. Then you just sit there, up, we
had a thing to do. You'd like just sit there with your ball and
cup for three years it came out. Now it's like it's twenty twenty five,
and then we have to spend the rest of our three two years whatever
on the internet, like waiting for it to reappear somehow. There are other
games that come out between the Yeah, and it's not like time goes slower

seems like a year. There's very far away. So I think sixteen months

because they also sort of do that when you're walking through that like foundation that

talk some more. Should be little drone things like that boss. Yeah,

many. The first one, the bike one. I was actually okay with
that because this is impressive. They're like created the neighborhood hair. It's nice.
I hated the one where it's like flashback to like school and you have
to get the US. We can lump like Mary Jane Stealth missions and Peter
Parker's the walk talks. Spider Man's kind of like you know what, Spider

Here was the remake really improving on a section of the first game that
wasn't all that memorable, making this really engaging kind of sequence leading up to
a foss fife and then that one part where it is literally that an American
glad ideator where they have like their like ball launcher, you have to go
between the cover and like shoot at the guy, and then a awesome boss
fight with a lot of knife pairing. We all know how I feel about
knife pairing, so it's like if American Gladiators had guns, Like, that's
what that whole sequence is. Now, I love you, but that was
like a kid trying to tell me what they did at school. Yeah,
oh my god, that's basically my brand. Look, I get it.
Like also, there's a decent chance you could die during that sequence, Yes,
and then the second time is not as fun. That's true, it
can't be difficult, so yeah, I kind of get rebettered, Like,
yeah, who knows what happened to the girl? You hear? That fucking
a bit fun every time. I didn't get to the part where you kill
a walking building. Can someone explain? Oh no, wonder that was the
moment I was already really enjoying that game. I've never played the Army Corps
before, did not go in with any expectations, and I was like I
started out and immediately, oh, this feels really good. I don't this,
Okay, a lot of action in this game. This is this is
really good. And then it's it's fairly early on, maybe like near the
middle, right, I think it's like activity or whatever. It's like the
end of the first act. Yeah, And that was the moment where I
went from thinking like, oh, wow, this is like surprisingly really awesome
to like, as you destroy this giant like at eight looking thing and you
can tell it's like blowing up, the health bar is gone, and the
the over the radio they're like, hey, you should get the hell away
from this. Thing you start kind of floating away, and I love how
I've seen several people do this moment and everyone has that instinct to rotate the
camera and be like, yeah, what's happening back there? And this giant
like it's so much bigger than like a colossus and shadow it is. It's
a city. It's so much legs. There's so much of that thing built
that you just won't see because the mission is getting shoot the thing, get
out, and there's like intricate like engineering work this and I mean the whole
like run up to it, like the anticipation of like okay, yeah,
that's a big thing on the rise, la, but as you close you're
like, well wait, it's still getting bigger. It's still getting bigger.
And then you're underneath it and it's this just massive structure, and that is
a really cool moment alone alone blow up and the little explosions that at the
beginning when you first kill it, and then just that huge one as you're
floating floating away like all time and early part of the game, it kind
of that was like, oh, I loved it. So I was like,
yeah, like this is cool. Then that like this is like some
stuff I did not think that's the moment that you used to that's the moment
they used to kind of like coalesce all the mechanics that they've been right in
the micro emissions before then. And usually most games would give you kind of
a soft boss battle to do that thing with where you can kind of control
it and contain it. This was like, all right, you're going to
you know how to do this stuff. Now, we're going to show you
one of the most ridiculous things in this game immediately. And the reason that
works is because like the getting there is a struggle. It can be too
for a lot of people who haven't played this franchise, like getting a handle
of the mechanics how it all works. But when you do that and you
bring down this huge thing, you feel unbelievable and it is quintessential for software.
It is the equivalent of coming back and fighting the Asylum demon and winning,
and like it is just is like el extrapolated out to to like a
different genre, and like if you're a from Soft fan, that is when
you go, oh, this is a from software as from software game,
and as someone who was like I'm I'm the Soul's guy, I'm on an
armored core guy and I was like, worried, am I gonna like this?
I've been okay with armored cord. That was the moment where I was
like, this is this is a game for me again? Okay? Is
it an actual luck? Because I think we're definitely not cutting it like it's
well, it's the best roman at the game with a lot of brains.
So it's so in comparison. Is winning a race in Mario Wonder that great
in comparison? Yes? No, No, you didn't win. Remember I
want a race. I want a lot of races. Yeah. I mean
this is not a scripted moment, it's a it's my moment in gaming.
It was a sequence that I experience this year and having that thing where it's
like, okay, we are all trying to do like the Rhythm level together
and we're doing the rhythm platform and it's like, I don't know if we're
all gonna be able to string this together. And then when you get in
the groove, even though these chuckle fucks are right behind you, try and
like oh I fucked up. I'm gonna go hit you. I'm gonna hit
you so I can come back to life, and it's like, no,
I'm in the zone. I'm completely dialed in, and hitting those last few
jumps and running to the end and having that sense of accomplishment is better than
almost any other moment this year for sure. Uh, I wanted to hang
around for now. I don't think we got to me. I was gonna
say, go two Tiers of the Kingdom, Yes, exactly, Yeah,
okay, so yeah, if we're adding, if we're specifically adding personal moments,
yeah, all of all of you know, keep going, keep going
at it. Well, specifically with Tears of the Kingdom. Figuring out that
you are on your partners switch and that you fast forwarded you and made you
skip the end of the game, and then figuring out that you did beat
the game, finding that out too late, and having your coworker save your
out whatever your hair is already back point. The catch is amazing? What
is the catch? Okay, it's the Game of the Year podcast. These
are spoilers. So at the beginning of the legend of Zelda Tears of the
Kingdom, Uh, you go into the cave with Zelda and Link, and
Zelda falls down a big chasm and Link tries to catch her and he misses.
You know, I played like fifteen hours of this game. This is
this is not the this is the beginning is Yeah, it's kind of not
supposed to. There's a payoff, right, he misses the catch, and
then the rest of the game is trying to get this point where you can
save her. And what they do is there's hundreds of hours between the beginning
this moment, and then they just basically stitch it at the end like now
she's falling again, you are falling through the sky. They built up this
moment where you realize where Zelda's been the whole time, she's been this dragon
in the sky. So every time you hear the music playing in the air,
and it's like these two notes they're familiar. Why do they sound familiar.
It's because it's Zelda's three, which is a three note melody, and
it's like doda and it's playing all constantly in the background. And then they
finally go and she turns from the dragon into the into Zelda and she's falling
through the sky and you you it's like, okay, now you gotta go,
you gotta go catch her. You're diving through the sky, she's falling
you get control back, you dive through the sky, you catch her.
You hear the music swell and it does the big clap sound that they've been
doing throughout the entire score, throughout the whole game, and it's an amazing
moment, a culmination for an incredible game. How is that the same category
when we were talking about fucking a bear? That's so you transform into a
different thing when a bear, you know, and you become one if we
need to cut a tears of the Kingdom thing. I know, I'm not
the most observant fella sometimes, No, and I don't. I didn't even
catch any of that about the catch, you know, I forgot that that
happened at the beginning. I didn't realize the note stuff. I just remember,
Oh that's cool, I caught her in mid air faster and it might
be the best game of all time. I was like, like, I
didn't catch that. I would love to just smash cut the a Onma's face.
That, yes, that is to say, I very much do remember
getting the Master Sword. That's always such a big I don't know another word.
Yeah, yeah, it's always a big thing where it's like, oh,
you go to a place you go underwater and find it in an old
castle, you find it in a forest. It's been sleeping forever and every
but like the idea of like, oh, this dragon is Zelda in the
way, the camera kind of pans up and it's like, oh fuck,
I have to go up there. I have to get up to the Zelda
dragon and pull this sword out of her hands. He's been charging it up
for a thousand years. Yeah, and there's like multiple paths to get to
that piece. Yeah, you don't even have to. If you don't do
that and you do the whole final sequet, it'll happen in the happens in
the end you get yeah. Yeah, So to me, out of those
two, I'll take the one that I realized what was happening. That's great.
I think the music in the catch is best, and I would actually
say it from when we talk about music eventually, which is not going to
be today, but Master Sword is actually the better moment. I think.

It sounds really cool? Though, pay it sometimes it's actually really what do
you do to an egg? Oh it's not gonna win. But look,
we all had that moment seeing the trailer for the Warrior game and just seeing

That game just makes me laugh and fills me with so much joy. Just
every time a new minigame pops up, and it's criminal that people haven't really
played there. It sounds like it's not selling. Well, uh, Warrior
move it is fantastic. U that's we can cut that. But okay,

I want to hear about the Okay, so you know the little goofy
guy that you carry, you meet throughout the game, so, uh,
this is the game became excruciating to play because of the detection to the little
footholes and climby bits. But as you get to the top, you hear
like a and then I'm like that sounds like a motherfucking whale. And then
you see a giant space whale come out, and then your little buddies like
and then we're like, wait a minute, are you a whale? And
then you jump on a giant fucking whale and you climb the whale, and
then the whale crashes and then your little buddies hurt and it's like, oh
shit, what are we gonna do? And then you bring your little buddy,
you climb another thing, and then your little buddy gets reunited with its
fellow space whales. Yeah no, it's like free Willie. But what were
you talking about? A second? Do the free Willie one? I think
I like the sound. It is nice fair, It is a good moment,
but it is it is frustrating to play. Yes, like in that
moment you are, I was very frustrated, but I did feel validated and
like, all right, that felt worth it? Yeah kind of. Yeah.
Also we are we have some four big ones. We got sucking a
bear, we got we sing uh, we have killing a walking building,
and we have getting the Master Silver. Wait wait wait, I have a

an amusement park, you're gonna get the game of the year from Jeff Back.

always the sexiest thing to say, but that game has the greatest pacing I
have ever seen in a video. You game just never a moment of boredom,
Always something interesting or exciting to either do or see or experience. It's
the best shooting I've ever had a game. The knife perying just makes us
so much fun. Absolutely loved it, played through it like five or six
times in a row. I don't usually do that kind of thing. Number
two, this might be a little surprising some is bowters Gate three, or
there's something about coming into this year with a game I thought I had no
interest in, and then like hearing all this excitement and playing through it and
really getting it, really having a fantastic time, really getting engaged with that.
Super fun. Number three is Tears of the Kingdom. Woo. Just
a fantastic Zoeta game. So much you can do in there, just so
many fun little things. Number four Street Fighters six, Hell yeah, shouts
out to sean best two D fighting game I have played, maybe ever,
certainly at least since Third Strike. Super fun stuff. Number five Pickman four.
I was not a Pickman guy. I thought that Pickman was not for
me. Jeff couldn't stop talking about it, so I was like, Okay,
I'm gonna give this a real try. Completely fell for it. Just
had so much fun going in there day after day, couldn't stop, had
to do all that one hundred percent stuff. Super fun game. I get
it now. Thank you, Mike Manati, ladies and gentleman. All right,

I did some soul searching right before to come up with my top five,
and I did do some last minute changes. I thought I had a
one game of the year the entire year, and it changed at the last
minute. What wait, what it's it's it's not gonna right now your pants
right now? Yeah? Okay. My number one game of the year is
Pickman four. That's yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, heart, And
it was the truth. It's the game I want to play right now.
I want to people playing it constantly. It's so well made, it's so
well done. It has great pacing, it has a great loop. It
makes you feel like, Okay, I got this little thing, now what
can I do with that? And that's my favorite thing in gaming. My
number two game of the year is The Legend of Zelda Tiers in the Kingdom.
Number three. This is another big change. Residential four. Wow,
it was a fun bit. But my god, damn, you're right.
That game is so good. And it was like, honestly, at a
certain point last night it was in consideration for number one. It really was.
It was it was like moving, yes, it was. It's so
it's so goddamn good. Number four is Armored Cores six. I'm I'm not
like the most well read frum fan. I loved Elder Ring Secoro, and
then I'm like, oh, Armored Corps six looks cool. There was a
moment Armor Corps Armored Core six where you are on this mission where you get
hired by these uh, these agents who you had been fighting against, and
they take you down this corridor and then suddenly it's like they're all gone,
and all these invisible mechs appear and attack you and ambush you, and you
feel so cool fighting your way out of that. That was actually my real
number one moment of the year, but I think i'd ever be able to
get on that list, so I'll say it here. And then number five
is super Mario Brothers Wonder Yeah, very nice. That is a great list,
Jeff, great list. Dam let's do it all right, here we
go somehow Strangers of Paradise is gonna make the board. Look how fly this
man is right now? Jacket show coins for the jacket. Yeah, pulling
off a bomber jacket. I'm still impressed. All right, just got the
show in the road. I'm gonna go Revessel though, Okay, yeah,
yeah, we can we can't talk. Good Number five is Armored Core six.
You all knew it was gonna be on my list. I'm the From
Software guy. I love Armored Core. I think it's an impressive translation of
what from Software does into a framework and a genre that is not the one
that everyone is used to. And I think that it's a really impressive feat
that they pulled that off. My number four, this one's for you,
Sean three Fighter six. Yeah. I feel like street Fighter five was a
bit of a rout for Capcom. We all knew it. We kind of
just grinned and smiled our way through the pain, and then street Fighter six
came along and they were like, yeah, we remember how to make fighting
games with attitude and like an esthetic and fun to play, and drive system
is really cool, and I'm glad street Fight is fun again. Number three
Lies of p I knew it wasn't gonna make it very high on this list,
but I had to be true to myself, and I wouldn't describe myself
as someone that plays souls likes because I just don't like any game that isn't
the from Software one that sounds very very pretentious. But I genuinely have tried,
and there's just something missing from it. Lies of p is the closest
game to almost capturing that, and I'm impressed that it is a you can
take the piss and say like they copied and paste it and pasted it.
But if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it. They're not
good speech. My number two game alan Wake two, a game that I
can't remember who tweeted this yesterday, but it was a side by side picture
of Sam Lake in a video where he was sadly apologizing for not being able
to make alan Wake two, and then next to a picture of him winning
an award for alan Wake two. And that's cool on its own, but
look at the game that they won that award with. It's weird and strange
and has the stupidest, funnest ideas. They could have gone playing and tried
to make it a big seller. They stuck to their guns, and it's
a fantastic game. You're here, there, you go. My number one
game of ten twenty three, all right, my number one game is Ballersgate
three. Uh. I'm gonna repeat what I said during the GameSpot Liberations and
Lucillopolosi. You have to hear this again. But we love escapism We come
to games to be other people, to be in other worlds. It's always
the dream of video games. It's like something primordial about video games that we
seek. No game has done that like Ballersgate three does. There's no game
that allows you to be somewhere else in that way and never tells you no.
That's the ideal of a best dungeon master, right, you want a
dungeon master that can never tell you no, and Ballersgate does that. It's
so good that you can create anything, be anyone, And that's exactly what
I'm doing. Everyone knows it. I've said it before. I'm playing ballders
Gate three as Patches from Dark Souls, and the fact that I could do
that is incredible. The fact that it supported it with the Dark Passenger,
the shove that being able to like steal it's It's an incredible experience. And
like this, I'm still playing my Ballersgate three Patches run. I'm definitely gonna
go back through it and do it again. So yeah, well done to
ballers Gate Three's in let's tabulate the results, right. I like that that
started off like the Nicole kidman amc Ad Hartwick feels good in a place like
this, you know, are you ready? Are you ready? Ready?

The winner of the real Game of the Year Giant Bombs Game of the
Year twenty twenty three is look at your bike. Sorry, I got really
excited. Sorry, it doesn't happen that fast, Barley, don't eat that.
Wow. Wow. Legend of Zelda somehow. Yeah. Yeah, finally
an indie game winning a war. Yeah yeah, the little guy. Everyone
keeps saying, Giant Bomb is Nintendo pilled and we uh still our bad Yeah,
I mean no, I mean like I was not a fan of Zelda
before Breath of the Wild, and I think I said this on the whidling
day. But the way that this game enables me and reminds me of how
I tackle life in being ill prepared for every single situation. But I've been
managing to cobble something together and succeed still and then be able to up a
robots butt. It's like life by making all of those abilities so much better.
I mean, obviously Breath we All was incredible, but those abilities were
a little more limited, and that like, how many times do we have
that feeling of like, oh, I'm stuck here, how do I get
there? And say, oh, wait a minute, I have this incredible
ability I can ascend and like the altar hand being usable in that, like
they have the magnet thing before, right, but that was very specific,
like oh there's this metal box whatever. Here's just like anything, it really
just opens it up. I mean what it did was it's like you would
see gifts of people playing Breath of the While and be like, oh,
they are learning to use these things in ways I never really think I can
even approach because they are expert level gamers. That's what Tears of the Kingdom
does for everybody. Makes everyone feel that way. Even if you are building
a bridge in a lot of scenarios, there's still something really neat about that,
like I am still solving the problem my way, even if it's very
childlike like that play as a solution is incredible. It's also hilarious when it
doesn't work. All right, I've done it all perfectly, I put the
rockets here, I did all this, He'd do it, and it's just
this like impotent little thing. Yeah, like you just crash into a just
going off on the horizon. Ye, it's hilarious. Yes, it's the
stories you can tell and we can all swap them and it's it's really powerful.
It wasn't on my list, but I still respect legend of Zelda Antaro
the Kingdom for building a bridge like that. Building a bridge, it means
a lot to me as someone who I don't live with my brothers anymore.
To keep emotional. But he really loves so Alda. I miss him.
I'm seeing him enjoy that game. It was beautiful, so I already respect
that game. It let me stay in touch with my brother. Oh yeah,
bloody Tam. I also got very emotional playing this game on a train.

but fine, for the first time in my life. Right, Hickman four
was next, I remember there, it is, all right? Then Armored
Core six, Steve Mario Brothers, Wonder, Marvel's Spider Man two, Chance
of Sinnar, and street Fighter six. That's a list list. Good work
