<v Speaker 3>of the best movies ever made, literally.
<v Speaker 2>Literally like you, you look at any source and The Godfather
<v Speaker 2>will be number one or number two. I think AFI
<v Speaker 2>had at number two after Citizen Kane. You look on IMDb,
<v Speaker 2>it's number two after the Shawshank Redemption. Then we have
<v Speaker 2>The Godfather Too, which is almost always right after, and
<v Speaker 2>then in a not two distant third place, and most
<v Speaker 2>of those ratings, you're gonna hit the Goodfellas Too.
<v Speaker 3>That's exactly right. And you've got cast members intermingled. You've
<v Speaker 3>got Scorsese intermingled a little bit, a little bit, so
<v Speaker 3>a little bit. The quotes are going to be flying.
<v Speaker 3>Didn't mean to assilicate, you know, a little bit.

<v Speaker 2>that we could do a sufficient podcast on all of
<v Speaker 2>these movies in just two episodes.
<v Speaker 3>You really could do like a season on you could.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, you could do probably multiple seasons on these movies.
<v Speaker 2>Given how good they are, how iconic they are, We
<v Speaker 2>couldn't possibly so, David Wright, I'm speaking to you. I'm
<v Speaker 2>not going to cover everything, but we are going to
<v Speaker 2>keep this fun and casual and talk about what we
<v Speaker 2>love about these movies. Let's do it, Okay. So our
<v Speaker 2>story starts back at the turn of the century, Young
<v Speaker 2>couple of Italian immigrants leave their home home of Corleone, Italy,
<v Speaker 2>a John Girardi and his wife Kate Okay, and they
<v Speaker 2>travel to New York. They have a daughter who marries
<v Speaker 2>another Sicilian in town who they have a son. Ultimately,
<v Speaker 2>the husband leaves and the grandparents, John and Kate are
<v Speaker 2>left to raise this young Sicilian man who ultimately will
<v Speaker 2>get cast in a part where he has the last
<v Speaker 2>name of the town that his grandparents came from. Okay,
<v Speaker 2>you got me al Pacino's grandparents both from Corleone, Italy.
<v Speaker 4>Don't ever take signs with anyone against the family again.
<v Speaker 3>Get out of town. I am not kidding.
<v Speaker 2>He had a poor background growing up. Like I said,
<v Speaker 2>his parents divorced and he was raised by his grandparents.
<v Speaker 2>He dropped out of school when he was seventeen and
<v Speaker 2>worked as a janitor, messenger, clerk, a bus boy. Sometimes
<v Speaker 2>he was homeless, but he wanted to be actor. His
<v Speaker 2>grandparents supported him in this, and he caught his big
<v Speaker 2>break in nineteen sixty eight when he got to play
<v Speaker 2>a street punk in the play called The Indian Wants
<v Speaker 2>the Bronx. He would be in a movie that same
<v Speaker 2>year and then virtually nothing else, a complete unknown. But
<v Speaker 2>somehow he caught the eye of a gentleman named Francis
<v Speaker 2>Ford Coppola, who was convinced, this is the man who
<v Speaker 2>needs to star in my epic movie, The Godfather.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, all right.
<v Speaker 2>The book was released a year after this first play
<v Speaker 2>that al Pacino did, and it wasn't originally going to
<v Speaker 2>be titled The Godfather. A few years earlier, this kind
<v Speaker 2>of heavy set Italian guy shows up in the office
<v Speaker 2>of Robert Evans, a producer for Paramount Pictures, Yes, which
<v Speaker 2>had recently been purchased by Gulf and Western. This was
<v Speaker 2>like the first of the big conglomerates purchasing movie studios.
<v Speaker 2>This was a time just think about this right now.
<v Speaker 2>This is late sixties, early seventies. This was a time
<v Speaker 2>when people thought the movies were dead, Like they didn't
<v Speaker 2>think any more good movies were coming out. TV was
<v Speaker 2>kind of ruling the world at that point.
<v Speaker 3>Sure sound familiar, Yeah, it sounds like yeahow right, yeah.
<v Speaker 2>And this set the stage for what would become the
<v Speaker 2>new Hollywood. The new Hollywood would include George Lucas, Francis
<v Speaker 2>Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and a couple of
<v Speaker 2>those guys, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, went film
<v Speaker 2>school together decided to start their own production company, Zoetrope.
<v Speaker 2>At the time that they formed this company, they were unknowns.
<v Speaker 2>As it turned out, this business that's run by artists
<v Speaker 2>wasn't doing too well exactly.
<v Speaker 3>They had gone in debt making THCHX eleven thirty eight.
<v Speaker 3>This was George Lucas's film.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, back to our heavy guy who's walking into the
<v Speaker 2>office of Robert Evans at Paramount Studio. Right, So he
<v Speaker 2>walks in and he's got this forty to fifty page
<v Speaker 2>treatment under his arm for a novel, and he says, look,
<v Speaker 2>I need money. I liked to gamble and I have
<v Speaker 2>some debts that I have to pay. Would you be
<v Speaker 2>interested in optioning a novel that I haven't even written yet?
<v Speaker 2>And Robert Evans is like, who are you? He tells
<v Speaker 2>him Mario Puoso I'm friends with. He's like, oh, you're
<v Speaker 2>that guy who I agreed to meet as a favorite
<v Speaker 2>to a friend. Okay, yeah, what let me look at
<v Speaker 2>I don't think he even read it. It was just like,
<v Speaker 2>let's get this guy out the door, how about twelve
<v Speaker 2>thousand dollars. Well, Mario Puzo owed about ten thousand dollars,
<v Speaker 2>so that sounded about right to him.
<v Speaker 3>Mario Puso owed ten thousand dollars to mob guys like
<v Speaker 3>leg breakers.
<v Speaker 2>He was an excellent author, but it takes more than
<v Speaker 2>being good to be successful. So Puzo had written this
<v Speaker 2>book called The Fortunate Pilgrim, which according to my sources,
<v Speaker 2>was incredibly good, incredibly intelligent, incredibly well written, and it sold.
<v Speaker 3>About five copies.
<v Speaker 2>I head this, yes, And what happened was there was
<v Speaker 2>a character that had not much more than a cameo
<v Speaker 2>appearance in the movie, that was a Godfather esque type
<v Speaker 2>of character, and everyone that read his book said, you
<v Speaker 2>should do something with that guy. That's a stroke of
<v Speaker 2>genius to find accidentally a character. And somebody says, you
<v Speaker 2>know what, that dude is interesting. Let's go with that.
<v Speaker 2>So Robert Evans says, sure, sounds good. I want the
<v Speaker 2>movie rights to great. See you later. Never expected to
<v Speaker 2>see anything from him again until the novel gets written.
<v Speaker 2>As I said, it wasn't supposed to be the Godfather initially,
<v Speaker 2>you know what the name of it was. At first,
<v Speaker 2>no mafia.
<v Speaker 3>Hah, that word comes into play here shortly.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, So he writes The Godfather, and the Godfather explodes.
<v Speaker 2>It becomes this huge success that now Paramount now has
<v Speaker 2>the property rights to.
<v Speaker 3>That's a great story.
<v Speaker 2>A few months later, Mario Puzo calls Robert Evans back
<v Speaker 2>and he says, would it be a breach of our
<v Speaker 2>contract if I change the name of the book, And
<v Speaker 2>he was like, I don't even.
<v Speaker 3>Remember who are you?
<v Speaker 2>Who is this?
<v Speaker 3>And he says, I want to call it The Godfather.
<v Speaker 3>So the interesting thing to me, though, is that Paramount
<v Speaker 3>is now holding the rights to this novel that's incredibly popular.
<v Speaker 3>You can't just sit on it. You have to make
<v Speaker 3>a movie, right. But they had just come off a
<v Speaker 3>huge mafia failure in a movie that starred Kirk Douglas
<v Speaker 3>as this mafia leader called The Brotherhood. Yes, have you
<v Speaker 3>ever seen that?
<v Speaker 2>I have not seen it.
<v Speaker 3>I haven't seen it either, but I heard it's junk.
<v Speaker 2>There have been mob movies around since movies began. I
<v Speaker 2>mean it was a go to You had James Cagney,
<v Speaker 2>you had Edward g. Robinson, exactly. But in the late
<v Speaker 2>sixties early seventies, nobody was interested in any of the
<v Speaker 2>mob movies.
<v Speaker 3>Because here's the problem.
<v Speaker 2>They were all the mob was just a bunch of
<v Speaker 2>greaser guys who deserved whatever they got. There was no
<v Speaker 2>redeeming value about any of the mobsters.
<v Speaker 3>Sure it was all the guys like a man.
<v Speaker 2>So they're sitting on top of this beautiful piece of property.
<v Speaker 2>They say, okay, we got to figure out a way
<v Speaker 2>to make this a movie. The guy from Gulf Stream
<v Speaker 2>and Western or whatever it was, his name was blued Horn.
<v Speaker 2>He was this Swedish guy. He was like, no, no,
<v Speaker 2>no more gangster movies, No more mafia movies. I don't
<v Speaker 2>want to do that. And then we're like, but this
<v Speaker 2>is the Godfather. This has been like weeks and weeks
<v Speaker 2>on the national bestseller list. He's like, if you can
<v Speaker 2>make it fast while it's still on the best seller list,
<v Speaker 2>then we can get something done fast and cheap, fast
<v Speaker 2>and cheap. Original budget two point five million dollars. I
<v Speaker 2>want to make them an offul kind of a.
<v Speaker 3>Fields even for the seventies. That's really low.
<v Speaker 2>That's crazy low. And so they're like, okay, we need
<v Speaker 2>a producer, we need a director. They go literally in
<v Speaker 2>the parking lot in the parking lot. They're like, hey,
<v Speaker 2>there's already.
<v Speaker 3>Hey you Hey that guy. He's good.
<v Speaker 2>He did the Hogan's hero stuff. He's a guy who's
<v Speaker 2>got his business together. Let's get him. And they're like, already,
<v Speaker 2>do you want to do this? He's like, I love
<v Speaker 2>that book. Yeah, sure, absolutely so already. This guy who's
<v Speaker 2>like six' Four jewish, guy he has got all kinds of.
<v Speaker 2>Personality you've listened to this guy. Talk he he's still,
<v Speaker 2>around still.
<v Speaker 3>Around this guy is A jewish man who sold the
<v Speaker 3>idea of a sitcom in Which american heo w's are
<v Speaker 3>in A nazi war. Camp, yes, YES i mean. Talking

<v Speaker 2>says uh, no. Thanks. Yeah they're, like what we're offering
<v Speaker 2>you the opportunity to direct a movie that's on the
<v Speaker 2>best Cellulars and he's, like, yeah you know, WHAT i
<v Speaker 2>couldn't get past page. Fifty this graphic sex scenes were
<v Speaker 2>a little too much for, me AND i Just i'm
<v Speaker 2>not interested in that kind of. Stuff and they're like,
<v Speaker 2>okay and they start looking. Around he goes back To zoetrope.
<v Speaker 2>Again he talks To George lucas about what's going, on
<v Speaker 2>And George lucas is, like what we are in debt
<v Speaker 2>six hundred thousand? Dollars could you just direct the movie
<v Speaker 2>for the? Money?
<v Speaker 3>Maybe how about you just get us.
<v Speaker 2>A little cash before we go belly.
<v Speaker 3>Up Francis Ford coppola incredibly gifted, director not known for
<v Speaker 3>his business. Sense. Though you know some other names that
<v Speaker 3>were associated with, This the one that stands out to
<v Speaker 3>me Was Peter. Bogdanovitch that would have been. Interesting twelve
<v Speaker 3>guys passed on.
<v Speaker 2>This, yeah so it's interesting too that they're going to
<v Speaker 2>The Roger corman, schools. Right bogdanovitch Was Roger corman. Guy
<v Speaker 2>Francis Ford coppola was A Roger corman. GUY i know
<v Speaker 2>when we talk about, casting we're gonna be talking About Jack,
<v Speaker 2>nicholson who is also A Roger corman. Guy they were
<v Speaker 2>looking for bargain basement deals at this, point and those
<v Speaker 2>are the guys that they were looking.

<v Speaker 2>Right, so as this novel has gained a, popularity Ultimately
<v Speaker 2>Francis Ford coppola does decide to. Direct he takes the.
<v Speaker 2>Novel this is so. Awesome he takes the novel and
<v Speaker 2>he takes he cuts out every single page and he
<v Speaker 2>puts the small novel sized pages within the borders of
<v Speaker 2>a larger eight x eleven piece of paper with the
<v Speaker 2>middle cutout sees both sides. Right and then he's made
<v Speaker 2>notes in the margins of the. Novel and now he's
<v Speaker 2>making notes in the margins of the big pieces of.
<v Speaker 2>Paper and it's all about how to direct each and
<v Speaker 2>every scene that he has planned for this. Movie so
<v Speaker 2>the guys From, paramount they want to make it a modern.
<v Speaker 2>Take they want to make it in nineteen, seventies and
<v Speaker 2>they want to base it In Kansas.
<v Speaker 3>CITY i see this is crazy to me because it's
<v Speaker 3>cheaper to go to The. Midwest, yeah, so, hey great,
<v Speaker 3>idea let's go To Kansas city Or Saint.
<v Speaker 2>Louis sure you'll get all kinds Of italian extras in you,
<v Speaker 2>know the middle of the.
<v Speaker 3>Country you know what they say In Kansas city all the,

<v Speaker 2>and he, goes you know, WHAT i like, you we like.

<v Speaker 2>and he's Got Joe colombo and all of these other,
<v Speaker 2>associates And Joe colombo is letting all of the newspapers
<v Speaker 2>know that he and the rest of his associates have
<v Speaker 2>approved the script and that can the movie can be,
<v Speaker 2>made and already realizes what's going to, happen and sure
<v Speaker 2>enough it. Happens the newspapers immediately come out and, say
<v Speaker 2>this movie is getting made because of ties to the.
<v Speaker 3>Mafia, wow that's, impressive and you know some of the
<v Speaker 3>other things that happen because of. That, so because The
<v Speaker 3>Italian America Civil Rights league is involved in the, production
<v Speaker 3>you have this Guy Lenny montana who's hanging around all the,
<v Speaker 3>time who actually worked as an enforcer in The columbo crime.
<v Speaker 3>Family So francis Ford coppo is, like, dang this guy's, huge,
<v Speaker 3>right he's, big he's, strong he's. Intimidating maybe we should
<v Speaker 3>offer him apart he Is Luca. Brassei, yes they hire
<v Speaker 3>an actual mobster to play an actual.
