SPOILER REVIEW! ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ with Mike and Kelsey’s Theories and Unanswered Questions

Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to a bonus episode of the podcast if you are new here. Every now and then, when there's a big movie out, we do a spoiler episode to get into all the details. So if you have seen the movie Don't Worry Darling, or I know that people listen to this who were never going to see these movies and they just want to hear our thoughts for free. It's basically like watching it for free. I mean, when I don't want to see scary movies, I read the Wikipedia page like after they've come out. That's kind of what this is. Yeah, this is like an audio Wikipedia page. You get all the details without having to go see a movie. So we watch and review movies so you don't have to. But we're gonna be talking about Don't Worry Darling, which is a hard movie to review because so much of it is based on like my review was, like, it was good, it was cute the end, because so much of it is based on the plot and what happens and all the questions it raises. But if you try to answer those, you end up giving away a lot of what the movie is about. But if you missed that spoiler free review, what the movie is essentially about, is Florence Pew's character living in this nineteen fifties dystopian, dystopian place called Victory, which is owned by this company, and it is all the men. They are doing something very mysterious. They go off to work, all at the same time. It's very like them leaving reminds me, Yeah, it's like us a nineteen fifties like sitcommerce show where everyone leaves at the same time. Their wife packs him a lunch, their wife has made them breakfast. They leave all together, their wife's stands in the driveway goodbye, and then they go inside and clean the house for the day. And that's like very much. It's the same routine every day. A lot of the movie, like the important part, was like repetition, like different scenes. And then Florence Pew's character is starting to question things when there's another woman who she sees basically kill herself and they try to cover it up, saying she's fine and she's in the hospital, she'd be okay, And she's trying to figure out what's actually happening because the woman's been telling her before she tried to commit suicide. She said to ask questions like what are they not telling us because she had her kid. So you see like this like flashback of this woman with a kid, and you are led to assume something has happened to the kid. You don't know what, which is a whole I think let's start with that question, which they talk about kids don't actually exist in this in this place. So when we find out later in the movie, the main spoiler is that it's all a simulation. It turns out that Harry Styles has put Florence Pew in this simulation to keep her there, and that raises a whole lot of questions. Do we want to start with, like why he did that? We want to just kind of jump Yeah, the big spoiler. So you find out that in their real lives. Well also I'm talking about in her real life, her name was Alex, not out lists, so it's Alex and Jack and she's a surgeon and he basically becomes like radicalized online and joins this project and like chains her to the bed and puts this thing on her eye that like holds her eye open and like conditions her and keeps her sort of physical body is in like we'll say two. But they are then like transported to the simulation in the nineteen fifties and he's like, it's this thing that holds her eyes open. It's freaky. So you find know that he has like purposefully done this and is holding her there against her will. That's how the movie started with the I and then it ends with the eye, so it kind of brought it all back together. I felt like that was the most shocking part of the entire movie, once you finally figure out what's happening. But I just had so many questions. And also, if you listened to the spoiler free review, when I talked about a part where like Harry looks so different that everyone starts giggling, it's that part. So he is this greasy looking like rats, sitting in front of a computer, like stringy hair, glasses, an American accent. Every girl just starts giggling. It looks like a hardcore gamer who doesn't get out much like I got to see him what he would look like as a normal, regular person. That was weird. I prefer Harry the Supercar. Yeah, that was the part where everybody was like, what is happening and which we also mentioned that like our theater and we went to see it was full of women, girls just wanting to see Harry. So it wasn't like audible gas. Yeah, it wasn't like an interest in the movie crowd. It was an interested in Harry crowd. So that got a rise out of everyone. I think the main question I had with that that the movie really didn't answer is how does he explain her absence from the world. Yeah, and I've seen a lot of I somehow ended up on like don't worry darling TikTok for like a week after because he's keeping her in this simulation. Yeah, like she was a surgeon. How is anyone from work not looking for her coming over to their apartment and like banging on the door, like, uh, she coming to work today? She good? Like if there was a timeline on like how long she's been in it, but it seems like it's been a long time. You feel like, how could he keep this under rats for so long without people questioning or even going in and breaking in there to try to find her. Yeah, And then another question is like I wish we got more at the end. Yeah, because the end was her waking up. You just like hear her waking up. She's escaped the simulation, and then that's it has a very underwhelming ending, And how does he pay for it? Because the whole thing of when the men in the town at Victory go to work, they are actually leaving the simulation so they can go and pay to keep them in the simulation. But how are they because he seemed to be unemployed in the first place, because yeah, that's the whole reason why he didn't want her, Like he's trying to fix their situation, Like she has a good job. He is paying to keep the simulation going, but how does he also afford that wild maintaining the rent on that apartment without her working raised a lot of questions. And I try not to like analyze every little detail in a movie like this. This was a movie like meant to analyze, and yes, and this movie was a lot of I would say aesthetic more than it was actual content and stuff to chew on. That's why in the spoiler reversion, I was like I needed more plot because I feel like in other movie is like this, where there's a lot of mystery and a lot of symbolism and a lot of these things that you have to pick up on and put together like a puzzle. None of this stuff kind of came together. A lot of it was like kind of thrown at you there, even though like if you die in the simulation, you die in real life was kind of thrown on there at the end. And then yeah, because that's another spoiler, she kills him in the end. She kills him because she figures it out and she thinks she's convinced him to leave, and he like basically, oh no, I guess that was when he committed her to the hospital the first time she escaped the simulation, and then she thought she convinced him. Believe an he had her committed And by the time you find that out about if you die in the simulation, you die in real live, he's already done. And also it didn't really add anything to the stakes of the movie at that point, like she's just going back to the real world. But like, okay, like I want to know, like she have to hide his body, Yeah, what happens after? Happens after? I need an after chapter. And then there was a weird part at the end where Chris Pine's character gets stabbed kind of just thrown out of nowhere to like what was the whole point of him because I think without him, the whole operation falls down and then what happens after that, But then that is weird because Olivia Wild's character Bunny, it was like I have to stay here because it's the only place my children are alive. So it's like not everyone wanted it to fall apart. M yeah, there's some loopholes. I need to go watch it again, we need to go Yes, this is a movie that I do want to watch again, and maybe rewatching it, I pick up on more things to figure things out more, or I just over analyzed and be like, ah, this is what it was trying to say this point. But there was just a lot of small details that never really got answered. So I felt like that hurt me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to. What I did see some people saying it was like whenever she was like cracking the hollow eggs, like what did that mean? I didn't get most of that stuff is there was little glitches in the simulation that started to oh yeah because they weren't like real X because there simulation egg. So there's yeah, there's things that weren't perfect about it. And there was all these other little things that would happen. She felt like the wall closing in, all closing in the airplane sounds, which it could have just been where their apartment was. That was like a glimpse of her hearing outside noises while you're asleep. Oh yeah. Or also what was the other thing? All the earthquakes, all the earthquakes and those it could just be kind of hinting at there's something else going on, giving you clues of maybe she's actually not experiencing this and there's some outside world around her, which like the earth takes. Earthquakes were interesting because they made you think that the men were doing something. Yeah, weapons are building or something, and so this whole time you think they're actually working on some projects. So that that was a plot twist that it was all the same nation. Yeah, I thought it was going to build up more towards her actually figuring out going out there. Like I thought there was actually a project and it was going to be something creepy and like paranormal. That's kind of what you thought. That's where I thought it was going interesting. I just this movie had that feeling to me of it was going to be something really weird and strange. I mean, it was, Yeah, it was, but I felt like it was a little lackluster. And it wasn't lackluster. Florence puse performance. No, she carried this movie. She was phenomenal. I would not have enjoyed this movie even a fraction of the amount that I did if it wasn't for her, Like, totally give all credit to her for carrying this movie. Another thing I saw that was like a purposeful like hint was when the doctors at their house and he asks Jack, like, what is it that the Brits say? And Jack doesn't know because Jack is not actually British. Ah, he's American. He's American, He's British. And the simulation. Yeah, see, I think there will be more things like that, Like I think like little things we'll pick up on. I do kind of want to figure out more of what the whole the people in Red meant. When they would come out and try to like diffuse the situation, I felt like, like, what did that really? What was that part of the simulation? Yeah? Yeah, the men in red jumpsuits, they were weird. That's why I thought there was something more paranormal or something like the end they're like scrambling up the rock to keep her from like exiting, Yeah, because it felt like there was something else actually going on that the men were doing. I don't know. I feel like I'm like trying to analyze. This reminds me of like when you had to analyze essays like in high school and college and like really dig deeper. My brain doesn't work like that anymore, like for an essay, and like I don't know what the symbolism is. I guess I was also coming off I hate comparing other movies two different movies I've seen, but I was in that kind of nope mindset of everything Jordan Peele didn't nope, didn't see it. Well, everything in that movie really had meeting behind it and it could be explained, and there's a lot more symbolism that I felt was expressed more and done in a better way throughout the entire movie that I really enjoyed, even though that was also a movie that I watched and had to go and research a little bit of what everything meant, but it all made sense to me in the end. After that this one, I've been looking at this stuff for like a couple of weeks now, and I still don't have all the answers. So maybe this movie was a little bit more ambitious than it could account for, than it could kind of achieve. But I loved I still love the aesthetic of it and the look of it, and the visuals in this movie. I felt really great. You brought up a great point that the sound design was really great in this movie, that I added another level to it reason to see in theater, and it still has a lot of cinematic value to me, and I think it's also still an important movie that I still don't want to discourage people from watching. Yeah, even with the like the loose ends, I feel like the main question of like what is victory and it being a simulation is answered. Like I don't feel like the unanswered questions mean you shouldn't see it Like there, it doesn't there's movies and books that end and you don't have answers. Yeah, it doesn't make it a bad movie. I think I like that you can kind of draw your own conclusions sometimes and figured out things on your own, because I think one of my favorite shows of all time was Lost, and a lot of people got upset at the finale of that show because not everything was answered that happened in that show, The Sopranos. Yeah, they're finale, one of the most iconic finales. It just like ends black screen and people everywhere thought their TV stopped working, but that was just the end. Like I think sometimes that's intentional because I feel like sometimes when things get wrapped up too much with the bow, then you're kind of like not really like all the books I read, A lot of the books I read aren't always wrapped up, Like it's kind of like I would love another chapter, but like I don't get that next chapter, and that's fine. And it's also the emotional journey that you go through the story tailing that that's the excitement of it too, Like that's part of it, of just what you experienced while watching it, and you take that in and that's the entertainment doesn't have to have everything all wrapped up. So I still stand by what I rated it. I do want to go back revisit it. I don't know that the rating would get any higher. But if you, I guess you've already seen it at this point of real listening to this or had it ruined. But I mean, even if you've had it ruined, like you listen to this knowing it was gonna be ruined. Maybe we made you want to go see itause maybe now you want to see all these little things. You're like, I gotta see what this is about. Another thing I remember saying on a tiktalk that they pointed out that like kind of like tells you there's another glitch was that when Alice was going to make tuna salad for Frank and John was like, no, it doesn't like that. No, it's because the real Jack hasn't been eating tuna packets because he is poor and keeping Alice chained to the bed in the simulation. Yeah, so what little things like that? Shut out to TikTok for providing me all of these answers. So if you were put in this situation, do you think you could figure out you're living in a simulation? I don't know. Or are we living in a simulation? We're gonna get really met all right now? I feel that way sometimes? Do I think I could figure it out? I feel like if like if we had always been living in a simulation, but if we had gone from like life now to a simulation, I would for sure be able to detect changes in your like body language, the like way you speak phrases words. I think I could figure it out, kind of like she did. Just little things. You're like, have a glimpse of your other life. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a simulation. I don't know. Here we go, I feel I don't know. There's just something inside of me that probably from watching movies too, From watching movies like The Truman Show. I like are to look at people a little bit more. I question things. I'm like, We'll just be sitting at dinner and you'll go, WHOA. I just had one of those weird moments that what is life am I living? I get like that sometimes. Yeah.
