Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. Give credit to Miami. We didn't know if they were going to make it into the playoffs, and now they're in the National Title Game and it will be a home game for Miami waiting for the outcome of tonight's Peach Bowl with Oregon and Indiana. Carson Beck, he did it when he needed to do it. It's not always pretty, but he did it and had the game winner ran it in.

00:00:28
Speaker 2: Now.

00:00:29
Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that we can discuss with this. There are a couple of plays. Old Miss should have had a couple of interceptions. Miami dominated time of possession over forty minutes, and Carson Beck had a couple of plays. He doesn't normally like to throw over the middle. He threw over the middle. But you're converting eleven third downs into first downs. You keep the clock going and give credit to Old Miss. When they did have the ball, they made Miami pay. And that's a really good defense. And Shambless is a one wonderful player. You know, you watch him and he does have the ingredients of being a pro quarterback. I don't know if he's coming back. I think he is trying to come back. The NCAA is not ruled on that yet, but he had a wonderful night as well, and it was a great story for Old miss And I did wonder if Lane Kiffen would have been coaching that team if there was no drama surrounding this. And maybe you know it's not fair to do this, but I did wonder this. Did they benefit from this with Lane Kiffen leaving and sort of, hey, he doesn't want us. They kind of rallied around this. And I know it sounds strange that the guy who recruited all these players, built this team, got you in this position. Were you better because Lane Kiffen wasn't your coach last night, as strange as that may sound, And I would say, I don't think you were better, but I think you were bitter and because of that, I think you played with that chip on your shoulder. But you would have benefited from having Lane Kiffin there because now your head coach could have just concentrated on the defense. And uh, you know the defense got roughed up last night by Miami.

00:02:15
Speaker 2: You know you have time of possession.

00:02:17
Speaker 1: Also, another thing is reinforced controlling the line of scrimmage. That's that's how you win. That's how you win big games. You run the football, you control the line of scrimmage, and that's what Miami did last night. But Old Miss had opportunities there. But Carson Beck takes it in and we have the touchdown call here, you got it.

00:02:42
Speaker 3: That holds his hands out, takes drops right to the right. Look, you got back to the U.

00:02:51
Speaker 2: He resided over the left side.

00:02:54
Speaker 4: Carson Back takes it in.

00:02:57
Speaker 2: Coy Miami touchdown, Miami touchdown.

00:03:00
Speaker 1: For cours Back.

00:03:02
Speaker 4: He's that the winning moment. He's that a three yard touchdown.

00:03:06
Speaker 2: And you know he doesn't run that much.

00:03:08
Speaker 1: He did run a little bit more last night, but he can kind of he can give you that great play and then he can also give you one of those you know, kind of scratch your heads like what was that. He's gotta be a little bit more consistent. You're not gonna get away with that, you know, in the championship game. But they do have a home field advantage. And then you have this situation where Fernando Mendoza is from Miami, and then you got Mario Christobal who did coach Oregon.

00:03:36
Speaker 2: So either way, you got.

00:03:37
Speaker 1: Some interesting storylines there, but the U is back and an opportunity to win the national championship.

00:03:43
Speaker 2: Uh seton what's the poll question today?

00:03:46
Speaker 5: Well, we got one here from Paul. The play last night was past interference and should have been called? Was pass interference and should not have been called? Or wasn't pass interference? Referring to the final play that game.

00:03:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I usually like to look at what what are the calls being made prior to that, and so therefore was it pass interference? Probably you probably could have called holding on the touchdown run as well. You know, it's tricky that there's so many plays, so many calls non calls, targeting not targeting through the course of the game. But if you stay consistent, then it shouldn't matter if it's the first player or the last play. Was there a lot of hand to hand combat there, and it's not exactly a hail mary. On a hail Mary, there is pass interference just about every hail mary, somebody is tugging, pulling, pushing, scratching, clawing. That one didn't feel hail mary ish with the way the throw was now, it wouldn't have been a spot foul, wouldn't have been on the one yard line. If they did call it, it's fifteen yards. But still you like the consistency and that when you could have called it, you could have. And I know that kind of taking the easy way out.

00:05:07
Speaker 2: At the time.

00:05:08
Speaker 1: I did think there was excessive tugging contact there. I just didn't think it was maybe enough that they were going to call it. I didn't think it was egregious, but I did think that it was there. I thought that the left tackle you could have called holding on the Carson Beck touchdown run if you wanted to.

00:05:27
Speaker 6: Yes, Tom, And isn't it easier we see in the NFL at the time to pick up a flag and say there's no foul in the play as a post of the other way, where it's one thing to throw a late flag but they're not throw it at all. Then you can't all of a sudden gather together and say we should have called the penalty on that it was path Ferris, Well.

00:05:40
Speaker 2: We'll talk to Chris Fowler. He'll join us coming up.

00:05:42
Speaker 1: Because Chris will sometimes say to the rules official, like you.

00:05:47
Speaker 2: Sure about that? You sure? So there wasn't pass interference, So.

00:05:51
Speaker 1: Chris will join us coming up. Is that the only poll question we have for the first hour. We're going to put that one up now.

00:05:58
Speaker 5: We're also going to work on one off of our most must win games of the weekend. That'll turn into a poll question as well. We have a couple of options here from Todd since it is a Friday fritzy, oh well as well throw over to that.

00:06:11
Speaker 6: Okay, Tod while tweeting his disappointment last night after oh Mis lost, would Lane Kippen pass a lie detector test?

00:06:20
Speaker 2: That'd be good TV? Do I think he was rooting for his team former team.

00:06:29
Speaker 1: I hope he was also going to get two hundred and fifty thousand dollars if they advanced to the National title game, so he might have been rooting from that angle. But also there's there has to be part of you that they might win without me and go to the national title Game, like it's got to be. I don't think it's cut and dried that he's like, of course he's rooting for Old Miss. I don't know if it's cut and dried. Yes, Marvin, he kind of took words out of my mouth.

00:06:59
Speaker 7: Personally, I think he wants them to win legacy wise, he does not want them to win because the one national championship that he was a part of, he really wasn't a part of because he left before they won.

00:07:08
Speaker 1: Okay, you got to pick, so what would you pick? I'm root for Okay, Paul, Do you think that Kiffen was rooting for illness.

00:07:17
Speaker 2: If he's a human being at all? Yes, last I looked to he as a human being. Well you know what I mean, satan, Yeah, yeah, I think he was todd.

00:07:27
Speaker 6: I like to think the best in people that he wanted his I do that could be sarcastic and passive, aggressive and be a wise guy. But I would like to think that the humanitarian part of Blaine kiff or whatever that is, is he wanted his guys to win it.

00:07:41
Speaker 5: You have spent the last I don't know how long killing this dude.

00:07:45
Speaker 2: No, killing this dude.

00:07:46
Speaker 5: Oh, my ego is so big that.

00:07:50
Speaker 6: That being said, I want to believe that he genuinely wanted them to win, even if it meant him not being standing there holding the trophy up with the guys and the confetti and everything.

00:07:58
Speaker 1: Yes, I want to be It means you don't believe, Yeah, you're trying to convince yourself.

00:08:03
Speaker 6: I would say fifty one forty nine he wanted his team.

00:08:07
Speaker 1: I'm going to say that he wanted ole Miss to win because he does have some guys on his LSU staff who were there, and maybe he's, you know, wanting them to succeed as well or get the spotlight going into a national title game. I'm gonna choose to believe that. Hey, yeah, thank you, Tom. What other pole questions?

00:08:26
Speaker 8: A few more?

00:08:26
Speaker 6: It's not my If it's not my team, I still want Indiana to win tonight because of Fernando Mendoza in spite of him. The whole choir boy like, are you an AI person? Are you real with all that? Because of him or in spite of him you want Indiana to win tonight?

00:08:42
Speaker 1: Okay, all right, it doesn't sound like you're rooting for humanity there with that.

00:08:49
Speaker 2: I thought you rooted for humanity.

00:08:51
Speaker 6: I wanted THEIADA to win, but I can't believe someone can be that. I thought Tim Tebow was something, but this guy has taken it to.

00:08:57
Speaker 2: A whole other level.

00:08:58
Speaker 7: Yes, Marv, hold on, Fritzy just said I want to see the best in people, and then once you see the best in people, you're skeptical.

00:09:04
Speaker 6: I think when you go to a higher level than the best and you're now like, oh my god, is this a person even like a.

00:09:09
Speaker 1: Real person, or you never said that about Tim Tebow, you never said, I don't know, is he a real guy?

00:09:17
Speaker 6: I would, but before I'm like, really, everything is a psalm and all the numbers and stats like t boats.

00:09:24
Speaker 9: Yes, I've been sitting amongst Fritzy for years, but lately, over the past month he's been mumbling little things about Fernanda Mendos, like this guy's too good to be real?

00:09:32
Speaker 2: Is this real?

00:09:33
Speaker 9: He just mumbles it lightly when he's on TV.

00:09:36
Speaker 6: He's just so excited and everything's great and you know, praise the Lord, and like, I just so just so great to be alive. Okay, maybe I'm jealous of his happiness level.

00:09:46
Speaker 2: I'm telling.

00:09:49
Speaker 1: That's what this could be, that you happy, you're you have jealousy over people.

00:09:54
Speaker 6: I think that's definitely what we did the same thing with them, you know, with the me. I wish I could be a stand up comic life that or a performance sing with the whole you know, Elvis.

00:10:03
Speaker 8: Thing and people freaking out over it.

00:10:04
Speaker 2: And girls crying. That's why you don't like the Beatles.

00:10:07
Speaker 1: Yeah, why don't you be more like Fernando Mendoza than you wouldn't have this cynical approach.

00:10:13
Speaker 6: It's a jealous, selfish kind of what about me?

00:10:16
Speaker 2: About me? And cheering for me.

00:10:17
Speaker 7: It's said, yes, man, I'm just shaking my head. Okay, I mean it's it's nine twelve.

00:10:24
Speaker 2: I warned you. It was a Fritzy Friday.

00:10:27
Speaker 4: I was.

00:10:27
Speaker 1: I came in and you know, Fritzie was harassing me as I'm pulling into the parking.

00:10:32
Speaker 2: Lote you down the driveway the parking lot.

00:10:35
Speaker 9: Yes, Paul, I want to go back to the end of this play. I watched it another time, the end of the Old Miss game, and it's really a quandary because it's not a jump ball. If it's a jump ball, hail Mary. They never throw a flag with all the infighting. It's more of a pass to the back of the end zone to one guy, but there's other players in the wash, and the ref is also directly behind the back of the receiver. You can't see the front of the receiver being pulled upon. But right at the end of the play, the Miami defensive back does the not me arms up move.

00:11:04
Speaker 1: And don't do that, because nothing says like a magnet. Nothing says I'm guilty more than putting my hands up to see I didn't touch him.

00:11:11
Speaker 9: I do agree with what you said earlier, is that it's a spot not a spot file, and it's fifteen yards, which means you don't decide the game by throwing that flag.

00:11:19
Speaker 1: Yeah, congratulations to Miami. You know, I know that there was I don't think it was one of those oh is at Miami or Notre Dame getting in. From what I'm told, I was told Alabama may have been the one that people were more curious about than Miami, but it felt like it came down to Miami and Notre Dame in their resumes. And then you know, the committee got a right. They got it wrong that Notre Dame's not in, but they did get some things right, and I think, as much as you know we've harped on that it's an inexact science, looks like they did pretty well. The numbers are probably going to be crazy for last night's game and then tonight's game. And if you have the Indiana story, even the Oregon story on Monday night for the national title, be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

00:12:49
Speaker 1: While the semifinal game was going on last night, you had that situation with Washington with their quarterback Demon Williams. So he retained an attorney. This is midday yesterday, and the attorney looked at the paperwork because he was going to transfer, and it looked like he was going to transfer to LSU. So what I'm told is the attorney that he just hired because the agent that he had decided that he was going to leave him, he was not going to represent him anymore. And Williams had signed a contract to stay at Washington. Then he went into the portal and all of a sudden, everybody went wait a minute. So the attorney read the paperwork and then told Demon Williams he needed to make nice with Washington as soon as possible because his chances legally to prevail were very, very low. It would take time and it would take money. He's going back to U dub and he released a statement or somebody released a statement for him that he's very excited. He's all in on staying at Washington. He's Brady Quinn, Fox College Football analyst, Big Noon Kickoff, former Notre Dame quarterback and you show that preceeds hours on Fox Sports Radio and the host of Two Pros and a Cup of Joe. Let's start at the end of the game. Would you have called pass interference in that situation? Was it pass interference?

00:14:19
Speaker 8: I personally would not call it.

00:14:20
Speaker 3: Could you make a case on pretty much any other play throughout the course of the game, would that be deemed pass interference?

00:14:27
Speaker 8: Yes? Probably more likely than not.

00:14:29
Speaker 3: There was some pushing going both ways, and in that final play. I think we all know when those plays looked at kind as a Hill Mary situation, even though it was your traditional Hill Mary, You're just you're not going to get that call.

00:14:42
Speaker 8: I mean, I think I'm the only.

00:14:44
Speaker 3: Player who was a part of a Browns team in two thousand and nine when we lost in the Detroit Lions to ever basically have a pass interference to the defensive pass interference called, which was called on Calvin Johnson in that game, and we obviously ended up losing that game. But I can't I think of another example of it in pro football or even college football.

00:15:03
Speaker 8: For that matter.

00:15:04
Speaker 2: How did Miami win.

00:15:07
Speaker 8: That's a lot of scrimmage. That's that's really what they've done.

00:15:10
Speaker 3: And I think last night's game was highlighted by the offensive line.

00:15:13
Speaker 8: I mean, that's just a massive group and.

00:15:15
Speaker 3: It's hard to like like really understand dan like how big they are until you're at the field level, because the camera doesn't do it justice.

00:15:23
Speaker 8: It really, it really doesn't.

00:15:24
Speaker 3: It's my like if it's and I've said this and we'll get into the semi final game tonight hopefully, but every time I see Indiana's offensive line and defensive line, and then you look across when it was the Big Ten championship for Ohio State or even Alabama most recently, you just go there's a tremendous size advantage. Well that's definitely gonna be the case if if you makes it and wins tonight.

00:15:46
Speaker 8: They're just a massive group. They're physical. I mean, you know, Mary.

00:15:49
Speaker 3: Crystobaal really it kind of made you know, state disclaims as a coach in college football on the offensive line and that group. I thought one last night in prior games it felt like it was Ruby Bay a key messador on the edges for their defense.

00:16:04
Speaker 8: But that's what they've won with. I mean, I don't get me wrong, they're extremely talented.

00:16:07
Speaker 3: Too in other spots, but that team has led in the trenches and that's a reflection.

00:16:11
Speaker 8: Of who their head coaches.

00:16:12
Speaker 3: And then credit to Mario Cristobaal forgetting that team to play that sort of physical style of football throughout the playoffs and for the most part throughout the year.

00:16:20
Speaker 1: I know, we spent a lot of time talking about quarterbacks in the portal and I keep reminding people, give me offensive and defensive lineman.

00:16:28
Speaker 2: I mean, I'll take it.

00:16:30
Speaker 1: I mean, Georgia won national titles because they basically said it doesn't matter who we have at quarterback, but it matters who we have offensive defensive linemen.

00:16:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, look at what Philly did after they won those national titles. Howie Roseman said, I'm gonna draft those guys and a super Bowl with those guys. So the win national championship. They've won super bowls with that strategy. So that that to me, I think it's like that. That's what's not talked about enough for if you really dive into what's happening in the transfer portal.

00:17:01
Speaker 8: Now everyone's talking about the quarterbacks.

00:17:03
Speaker 3: And they're obviously going to fetch the highest price if you don't have one, but it's still offensive lineman. It's defensive linemen. We can go on for days talking about how the style of football that's taught at younger levels and how that translates up and how it impacts offensive line play, and how hard it is to find guys who are ready coming out of high school who either don't need to put on a bunch of a weight and put on a bunch of muscle and develop that sort of strength and physicality. That's one part of it, but also just the way they're taught the technique and everything else that goes along with that.

00:17:38
Speaker 8: It's very different.

00:17:39
Speaker 3: You know, it's just a lot of that's changed over time, so they're a prize commodity. You don't have to look any further than Texas Tech who won the Big twelve and look at that defensive front and the impact that it made on their chances of getting to the playoff and then ultimately winning in the playoff. But at the end of the day, like, that's what this game is going to come down to, who's best in the trenches and today's semi final no in the National Championship.

00:18:01
Speaker 1: If I had Lane Kiffen hooked up to a lie detector test, who do you think he was rooting for last night?

00:18:13
Speaker 8: I'd like to think from knowing.

00:18:15
Speaker 1: We keep saying, we'd like to think that, what do you actually think.

00:18:20
Speaker 3: Well, he's incentivized to root for old miss right, like he's still getting paid off these wins, So I think he was rooty.

00:18:26
Speaker 2: He's rich already.

00:18:28
Speaker 8: This is get that hold on, hold on anyone who has money. You can't tell me.

00:18:33
Speaker 2: They don't want more money.

00:18:35
Speaker 8: That excuse I hate when people bring that up, like, oh, they've got money. Oh, I guess they just.

00:18:40
Speaker 3: Don't care that they're gonna light it on fire and they're just they don't care what happens to it. I think he was rooting for ole Miss and in part because, I mean, like, it's gonna look bad if obviously they want to win a national championship, and that's maybe part of the reason why you left ole Miss in the first place.

00:18:58
Speaker 8: But he is incentivized.

00:19:00
Speaker 1: Uh.

00:19:00
Speaker 3: I think the dude's got a good heart despite some of the other things that may could go on. So I'd like to think that he's rooty for guys too who are gonna be coaching on staff.

00:19:09
Speaker 2: Charlie West Junior, who agree with that, Yeah, I agree with that, and.

00:19:13
Speaker 8: Even so the players who may be joining him. So I'm sure there's some.

00:19:18
Speaker 1: Elements he would be rooting against his players if they're going to join him because now they can join him a week earlier.

00:19:25
Speaker 8: True, true, but I think they'll they'll they would still have that chance after this game to figure that out. I'd like to think he was ready for all Miss. I believe he was.

00:19:35
Speaker 2: How do you evaluate Carson Beck.

00:19:39
Speaker 8: Who.

00:19:41
Speaker 3: I think you obviously saw in the final drive what he's capable of. I think we've seen throughout portions of his career what he's capable of, the tough thing is is you didn't really have to do a deep dive into you know who he is as a person. You know what, maybe hazard hasn't been there for him so he can display that consistency like we all maybe you'd say a couple of years ago at Georgia or even at points in time this season, when he has those good games, he's not able to follow it up and consistently play that way. You know, it felt like he was managing the game in the quarterfinal round, and then last night, like when they really needed him to, he stepped up and made big time throws.

00:20:16
Speaker 8: Obviously the scramble for the touchdown to win.

00:20:20
Speaker 3: But I think you see the high end, like he can be a guy that's talked about going in the first round because because of that arm talent and the ability to layer throws and anticipate and see windows. But there's other times too, when when you see some of those poor decisions, or you know, him not playing as well versus pressure, or some of those bootz looks, you go, well, he's gonna be asked to do at the next level.

00:20:41
Speaker 8: So it's it's hard because you could see the.

00:20:43
Speaker 3: Upside there, but there's still a level of consistency that's just not it's never really come together. And I don't know how to put that, uh, you know, how to summarize that at this time, because I still think he's got a big game ahead of him if he plays well in the National Championship. Based on what he did in last night's game, based on what you do in the National Championship, that's probably all people really want to talk about. When they were company to a draft evaluation of him.

00:21:06
Speaker 1: Talking to Brady Quinn, Fox college football analyst, what did Oregon I guess, gain or learn from the first matchup with Indiana that helps them tonight?

00:21:18
Speaker 3: They got to be better and stopping the run. I thought that was what ultimately lost them. The game was in their house, and this is a group that obviously is highly motivated. You know, you see Dan Lannings pregame speeches. But they weren't the more physical team. And I think they know they have to be the more physical team because Indiana has proven that every single game. We can talk about Brenanda Mendoza, we can talk about the defense, Cooper Sarah, some of their playmakers. It starts in the trenches, like they have dictated to others how that game is going to go, and everything to me is based off how they run the football and the RPOs everything else off of that.

00:21:52
Speaker 8: So they've got to find a way of stopping the run.

00:21:55
Speaker 3: That's been a little bit of an achilles heel for Oregon's defense this year, if we want to break it down. But but I tend to believe that you know, when you have rematches and it's it's seldom you have it in college football, a least not until we had to expanded playoff that you know, the team to lose is gonna learn more from that. And I think you have evidence of that. Look at the playoff. If you look at every single power for a team that played a rematch, the team that lost the initial matchup one, you know, you don't have to look any further than it was Old Miss obviously lost to Georgia.

00:22:22
Speaker 8: They just they beat Georgia.

00:22:23
Speaker 3: In the subsequent round, you had Bamba who lost to Oklahoma, who beat Oklahoma. And even in the SEC championship game, you know Georgia lost to Bama. They you know they were win the SEC Championship. So there's examples I think of that. I think the only one you could point to is or ole Miss who beat Tulaan and obviously a rematch which didn't change anything, but again not really in the same you know, level playing field. I think that's what the stake for Oregon is.

00:22:47
Speaker 8: Is this team.

00:22:47
Speaker 3: To me, DAN feels like Ohio State last year, where you know, Ohio State had kind of you know, lost the Michigan game, stumbled versus Oregon as well, but they kind of built that momentum as they.

00:22:59
Speaker 8: Went on to win a national championship.

00:23:01
Speaker 3: Oregon, you know, lost that Indiana game, didn't play in the conference championship, but I feel like they've kind of learned from that and they've built up from that and now they've got a lot of momentum as they head into it. So I would not be surprised at all if you see a very more you know, physical, different style Oregon team and as far as how aggressive they are stopping Indiana's rushing attack.

00:23:21
Speaker 1: The SEC finishes this postseason with a one in eight record against non conference power for teams. Is this the future or is this an aberration?

00:23:32
Speaker 3: No, this is what college football has been. We for the third straight year don't have an SEC team playing for a national championship for the third straight year. You know, you didn't have the bulk share of representation in the playoff, at least in the SEMIS they're not represented by SEC teams. So I think when you really take a good hard look at what's happened in college football is there's been a shift and look, you can draw your own conclusion about how NIL and the transfer portal has impacted that where now you can pay players that it's above board. I'll let someone else, you know, uh, tick off the SEC fan base about it. And I'm also not naive enough to think that other schools and other conferences weren't doing it, but it just kind of see, it feels like an odd cause and effect that NIL transfer portal that you know, combination now becomes possible, and all of a sudden, the teams in the Big Ten uh and other teams start kind of really capitalizing off of that. So I think this is going to be more of the norm. And I think moving forward, uh, you know, you're you're only going to see you know, teams within the Big Ten continuity as stronger. I mean, if I you does it, that's no saying like who else could potentially do it too in the Big ten that we really didn't think about. Uh, you know three years ago.

00:24:46
Speaker 1: No matter who wins the national title, do you feel Notre Dame is still better than them?

00:24:54
Speaker 8: Hey, I don't like living in a world of hypotheticals, so.

00:24:57
Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not one of those No fans who's gonna sit there and say that. Okay, I wish there was a scenario where Notre Dame could have been in so he could have seen what it would look like, but that wasn't the case.

00:25:09
Speaker 8: I don't.

00:25:10
Speaker 3: I even hate the fact that we have to talk about it because you know, it takes away from all the other schools and what they've accomplished, all the players, what they've accomplished.

00:25:19
Speaker 2: But in trying to make great radio here, you know.

00:25:24
Speaker 8: But here's what I'll say. Here's what I'll say. With you even asking it, it goes to show you the brand power of Notre Dame.

00:25:30
Speaker 3: Like ESPN can't help themselves and they have to make a snarky comment as they do the postgame highlights on Sports Center afterwards about Notre Dame, who hasn't been involved for a month, but like everyone still wants to talk about them.

00:25:45
Speaker 8: Okay, Like, go ahead, keep on talking about the.

00:25:47
Speaker 3: Brand that everyone hates to admit is the top of college football, even though they're not.

00:25:51
Speaker 8: A part of that.

00:25:51
Speaker 1: Well, same thing with the Cowboys. Everybody goes out of their way to somehow incorporate the Cowboys. And even now, you know, like you know, we're gonna look ahead, you know, next year with the Cowboys. Wait a minute, there's games coming up this weekend. Let me, can you give me a comp for Fernando Mendoza.

00:26:12
Speaker 3: Kirk Cousins is kind of who I when I'm watching his tape and see in.

00:26:17
Speaker 2: Regards to the high a higher end.

00:26:21
Speaker 8: M That's a tough question to answer because I also was.

00:26:25
Speaker 1: A fourth round draft pick. That's why I was saying that this is gonna be the number one. Now granted there's not a lot of quarterbacks in this draft.

00:26:33
Speaker 3: Oh hold on, I mean, if Dante Moore comes out, I'm not I'm not so sure he's not gonna be the number one overall pick.

00:26:39
Speaker 8: Like, I think there's a.

00:26:40
Speaker 3: Real argument to be made in his upside, his skill set. He to me, if he came out, would be the purest passer, meaning when you watch me, I think he's got a stronger arm. I think he layers throws better. I know he's not his experience, and obviously you know he's not the Heisman Trophy winner. And Fernando's had a tremendous year. I'm not taking anything away from it.

00:27:00
Speaker 1: Let's take you no take away the college stuff. Let's look at pro potential.

00:27:04
Speaker 3: So so when I watched the tape of these guys and you're watching the different throws that they're making, I sit there and look at Dantae Morr and I said, Yeah, that's the guy I probably feel like has the higher upside and and even some of the stuff he does off scheduleing.

00:27:18
Speaker 1: Okay, but let me make you Tom Brady, You're you're the GM of the Raiders. You're on the clock and the pick at it is in the Raiders select.

00:27:28
Speaker 3: I would well again, Dante Moores hasn't declared so and so he does, it would be Fernanda Mendoza once he does, I would lean right now, based on my film stunning on both probably on Dante Moore. I like that, and I know that's that's gonna be controversial on people, but it's just what I've seen from him. I've sat down taught to them, and they're both tremendous guys. Like I think they both be franchise quarterbacks like this, Like we've got in trouble before because we had a debate over like Bryce Young CJ. Stroud, And it's like, both these guys be franchise quarterbacks. Like they each have a skill set that I think translates to me. It's more about, Okay, if Fernando goes to Las Vegas or if Dante goes to Las Vegas, what are they going to do to help him out? Because that is a team that's devoid of protection and devoid of any playmakers helping him out. I mean, look at Ashton Genty. I think he rushed for what is it, twelve hundred yards, thirteen hundred yards, like a thousand of them were after contact. I mean, it's it's ridiculous what he had to endure as a running backs. So both those guys I think will probably go one and two in whatever order the team see that. But I think the difference for me again is just I think Dante's got a little bigger arm.

00:28:34
Speaker 8: I think he can create a little bit more.

00:28:36
Speaker 3: He's less experienced, and obviously he doesn't have the same type of tape, but it's just effortless man when you watch him the way he throws the football. And the one concern and have a little bit for Fernando is they run a bit more of a heavier, heavier, rpo offense, and so that doesn't translate quite as well to the next level. You know, we always talk about the progressive quarterbacks reading defenses and understanding what they're trying to take away. I think you see a little more NFL throws, more of an NFL style offense from what Dante's as to do an organ as opposed to maybe what you're saying from Fernando at.

00:29:08
Speaker 2: Ayu Jets Raiders.

00:29:12
Speaker 1: If you had your choice and you're going to play quarterback next year, where are you going.

00:29:18
Speaker 3: I think the Jets are better positioned because of their personnel to allow you to have success. I was a part of the Jets organization for half a year, so a cup of coffee or whatever, and I would say, they've got things set up, but you know, you just got to hope that it all comes together.

00:29:36
Speaker 1: Would you go back to college if that was the option, you could go Raiders, Jets or back to Oregon.

00:29:42
Speaker 3: If you're talking about being the I mean, if you're talking about the business decision and you're the number one overall pick, I mean, you're making a lot of money on that first contract that's fully guaranteed, really right for the first four years with a fifth year option.

00:29:53
Speaker 8: No one's going to be able to compete with that at the college level.

00:29:56
Speaker 3: And so you might say, like, are you willing to take on that risk where, yeah, you could get paid I don't know, Brendan Soresby got paid what five million reportedly to go to Texas Tech.

00:30:05
Speaker 8: You know you're gonna get paid good money, and you delay it for another year.

00:30:09
Speaker 3: But I'll ask you this, Dan Jets raiders the Browns Tights like they've been drafting it somewhere in that spot for a long time.

00:30:18
Speaker 8: Like it seems like it's pretty cyclical.

00:30:19
Speaker 3: It happens like every other year, So there's no guarantee if you go back to school, you're not going.

00:30:24
Speaker 8: To have that same team in the same situation play itself out.

00:30:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll leave you with this.

00:30:29
Speaker 1: Does Miami fire their head coach if they don't know who is going to be their next head coach? I?

00:30:39
Speaker 3: Uh, it just doesn't line up to think that they didn't react to the John Horbad now being out there for them.

00:30:46
Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean none of it lines up, not with who.

00:30:49
Speaker 3: The general manager interview candidates have been, and especially if they end up hiring their general manager first.

00:30:54
Speaker 8: I think the thing that bothers me the most about it is, you know, what of Mike McDaniel.

00:31:00
Speaker 3: Bench to a if he knew that he was gonna get fired at some point, whether it's after the season or like if he felt like he needed to put the best guy out there to win and has no disrespect to Quinn yours, but he's a rookie.

00:31:11
Speaker 8: Maybe they want to see what they have in him.

00:31:13
Speaker 3: But I think as a coach you also do that if you feel like you're comfortable, like, hey, I'm gonna be here in twenty twenty six.

00:31:17
Speaker 8: Yeah, so let's see what we have in this young guy. That's what That's what strikes me is a bit odd too, is just the way it all went about.

00:31:23
Speaker 3: If it feels like again they're reactive to who else is out there, maybe even with Stefanski, but it seems like all the all the dots are connected and it's gonna end up being horrible.

00:31:32
Speaker 2: When it's all said and done, good to chat with you as always.

00:31:35
Speaker 8: Have a great weekend, Happy New Year, by the way, or there's a too late, it's too any one of those like yeah, you're okay, you're you're a Seinefeld guy.

00:31:42
Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, to like, okay, do I wait until the end of January.

00:31:46
Speaker 3: If I hadn't seen you, I might, I might open up with that. I think that's a that's a that's a fair way of handling it.

00:31:52
Speaker 2: And you could have texted me.

00:31:54
Speaker 8: It's a good point. You're gonna text me.

00:31:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, But I wouldn't say Happy New Year.

00:31:59
Speaker 8: I'm saying you could have. On New Year's Day, I would be here.

00:32:03
Speaker 1: I only respond when people do it to me. I don't do it. I don't say Happy New you.

00:32:09
Speaker 8: Oh you're one of those guys. Okay, I'll keep that in mine. I'll keep that in mind.

00:32:15
Speaker 2: I did say Happy New Year to Lane Kiffin though, see.

00:32:19
Speaker 8: But that maybe that's because Lane's pretty good.

00:32:21
Speaker 3: Alluring people into situations like Demon Williams and all that.

00:32:26
Speaker 1: I didn't reach out to Lane. But hey, have a great weekend. Thank you, Bud, thank you. That's Brady Quinn. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Chris Fowler was on the call for last night's Fiesta Bowl between Miami and Ole Miss, and he'll be there for the National Title game on Monday. That'll be at seven thirty Eastern on the Mothership and then he heads down Under for the Australian Open on ESPN Network. You kind of go into a game with all the different scenarios like this could happen or what if this happens?

00:33:06
Speaker 2: How often are you surprised in a game?

00:33:11
Speaker 4: Pretty often because college football, dan, as you know, is often messy. It's not neat tidy, it's controversial, it's noisy, it's beautiful, and we had all of that in that game last night. I mean, if you think about the small moments I've been reliving sort of the end of the game situation because that was the most dramatic and memorable, but all the little moments that get you there. Oh, Miss Lucas Carnero is a great kicker. Hits the left up right twice, doinks it twice? On consecutive field goals. One stays out, one goes in because it's this far to the right. All the Miami dropped about four interceptions, but guys kept making amazing plays. And you know, I hate to say this because it's a cliche, but you really did hate to see Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss that group of guys that have been through so much walk off defeat it yesterday. Only one team could survive, and Miami deserved it. But man, it was it was I didn't expect a lot of things I saw last night, that's for sure. Carson Beck running the ball for a touchdown was not on my Bengo car for that end of game situation.

00:34:11
Speaker 1: Okay, the non call with that final play, your thoughts on now. And I'll preface this by saying, I always look at how the game is going to get called. You know, they calling everything, or they letting them you know, play, But and they were calling a lot and that's why I I was a little bit surprised that they didn't call something on that play.

00:34:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll get to that in a second. I mean, the reason why it's it's tough to know what's going to happen in these games is because they're officiated by different conferences. It was the Big Ten last night. You can't have a team involved in the game and then have that conference officials, So it's frequently guys. You don't see those teams all year, and they call pass interference very differently in different leagues. I had a conversation with the officials on the field about that pregame. They don't always agree with me. They like the thing. There's a national standard. I think it's called differently. Yeah, mind, you even have a single penalty against them in the Ohio State win last night. They had a lot of costly penalties, a lot of mental mistakes, and all miss had less. But at the end of it, you know, maybe it wasn't a true hail mary. Heave you know where it's six guys in a pile jumping up and down and that almost never gets called. As you know, you have to you have to tackle somebody and step on their neck in the NFL to get a call like that and a hail Mary at the end of the game, this wasn't really that. But at the end of the day, mutual combat is what Bill Lemagne are rules expert in the booths. We had to defer to him. He called it that, and you know there was pushing and shutting on both sides. If it's a normal middle of the game situation in the end zone, they probably get a defensive pass interference call. But we can't we we can't complain when the officials step in an intervene if we don't understand they're going to call things differently in different situations at the end of the game. Right, don't we kind of want that? Don't you want to let him play in the NBA? You want to take Zack foul called or something decided at the free throw line.

00:36:10
Speaker 1: I don't, but it's an advantage for the defense. Then if they know you're not going to call this, and it was kind of an intermediate mary, not a hail mary, and so because of that, and you're right, hail Mary, they're not going to call anything. This to me, you know, you could have called that, and it's not a spot foul. So it's only fifteen yards. It doesn't decide the game. But given that moment and the way they had called the game, I thought maybe you could have They could have called holding on the left tackle on Carson Bek's touchdown run.

00:36:43
Speaker 4: You could have called a lot of holding last night. I think when you have the attitude in your mind that the CFP officials are going to let him play, which we heard. We hear a lot, and they have I think throughout this bracket for the most part, let teams play because they know that. You know, twenty two million don't tune into why a holding call, but you're right, you have to. You have to sort of officiate the game with consistency and your best judgment. What Lamaie said though, was mutual combat. That's what That's how the officials view it. Yes, there was jersey grabbing, Yes the official was. I mean the receiver shriveling was grabbed there, but he also was pushing off with the arm to create space before that. And you can make a case of they've thrown a flag. You know the history if Miami had been called for passing the last play the game at all. I was on the rug Devil Stadium. I was there. Maybe you were too, Yeah I was, and and Miami's never won a FIESTAVL. They've had their heart broken there. If they had thrown a flag on Miami in that situation, historical context, and I'll miss it won the game. I want you could write a movie about whoever wins the game on Monday Night. It's going to be a great movie. It was a movie about Old Missus season. Anyway, that would have been another movie on Miami's futility in the festival, if if they'd thrown a flag there.

00:38:00
Speaker 1: Mutual combat sounds like a Liam Neeson movie. Stephen Segal in Mutual Contact.

00:38:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he got a mutual combat contract. I said, I get what you're saying, because they are hand fighting and pushing and shove it. I just wanted back up for a second. I'm in Atlanta. I got in at four o'clock. I'm just trying to be professional with you hearing and get the voice right, so pull back the curtain. I have this honey from New Zealand. I have this gel from China, which is an herbal thing. I have lozenges, and I have this device here. I'm not vaping, I assure you, but this is something that you take a hit on to get your voice back. It's called a vocal miss thing that singers use. And I've got my iPad sitting on my wheelie bag, which is on a small table and the IPAs leaning against a trash can. I'm just doing my best here to function at this Algordan for you.

00:38:54
Speaker 1: So are there concerns the voice might not be ready for Monday night?

00:38:58
Speaker 2: There are no concerns about You're not game time decision, are you?

00:39:01
Speaker 4: No? I mean Sean mcdonn and Greg McClay are calling the game. I'm just sure in Atlanta to watch, okay from the field, and you know, prepare for the championship. I'll be ready. Don't worry about it.

00:39:10
Speaker 1: Are you the understudy in case something happens to Sean McDonough.

00:39:14
Speaker 4: I hope not. Nothing's gonna happen to Sean mcdonne. Except'll call it great king.

00:39:18
Speaker 8: Uh.

00:39:18
Speaker 1: The Indiana story And you know, growing up in Ohio, we were aware of Indiana because they were always the team that was usually had zero it was like fifty six to nothing or whatever, losing his friend. You know, a team in NCAA history with football, and then they do this in two years, this turnaround and you're trying to tell people like you think the Hoosiers movie is you know great? This to me, Trump's that because I mean, who would have thought Indiana would have a Heisman Trophy winner, be the number one team, be favored to win the national championship, any of the above.

00:39:58
Speaker 4: It's the greatest turnerund I've seen in the sport. You can make comparisons to other sports. It's not supposed to happen in college football and never has historically. Now with the Portal and NIL, you can make it happen pretty quickly. But even given that, what Signetti has done is astounding to me. I mean it happened last year when they make the playoff and take another level up to be as dominant as they were in the Rose Bowl. The roster is not built with four and five stars. It's a very different roster construction than the other three teams in the semifinals and most of the other teams in the playoff. But he is a brilliant evaluator of talent. That's what you have to have. A lot of guys can go to the portal and spend money. They spent it beautifully, and they had a great eye for talent. And he brought a bunch of key guys from James Madison with him were the core of the team. And he went out and got Mendoza, so he made some great choices. But I don't know this is going to happen again in the future either. I think it's yeah, you can win quickly with the modern reality, but still to do it they I don't want to put it now. They got the portal of no know, you have to make a million smart choices to do what they've done.

00:41:04
Speaker 2: SEC did not do well in the playoffs one.

00:41:07
Speaker 4: And eight or the Bowls for that matter.

00:41:10
Speaker 2: Is this an anomaly?

00:41:13
Speaker 4: Well, I mean it's the third straight year that a SEC team is not going to play in the championship game, and a Big Ten would now be favored at this point to win three in a row. So yeah, the Big Ten can say that the championship runs through that conference. The Big Ten also did well head to head in the balls against the SEC. But if you view where the SEC is and where it's going, yeah, always not doom and gloom. I think that, you know, at the bottom of the conference, the bottom half of it, you know, nine through sixteen, it's still much stronger than the Big Ten. So running the gauntlet in the SEC is still the most challenging thing to do in this sport. The Big Ten at the top is where the power lies. So the SEC used to have great top heavy power and also depth. They don't have that anymore. At the top. You've got three elite team out of the Big Ten, and Ohio State got knocked out him two of her playing here in Atlanta tonight. But I don't think the SEC is going to fade away. That there's you know, they have too much money and too much passion and too much invested in the sport already, But it makes it interesting. I like the fact that there's balance in the sport. I like the fact that a ten seed in Miami, which many people out there thought, and I know you're watching out there, didn't belong in. Look where they are now. They won three tough games and they're going to play for a championship.

00:42:32
Speaker 1: I wonder though that, you know, with college football playoffs maybe going to sixteen next year, the Big Ten and SEC are saying we need to have X number of teams. I don't know if this hurts their argument of saying we should get X number, we should have five teams in and the Big Ten has five teams or four teams because of what's happened this year.

00:42:55
Speaker 4: I don't love the idea of expanding and then including four automatic bids to the Big ten in the SEC, and that's the plan of Tony Posidi, Big Ten Commissioner, And you know, maybe more conferences, like you know, the a SEC might like to go along with that too, they like to have more teams in I kind of like the structure where it is now. I think the tweak you can make is, you know, tougher restrictions on group of five teams. It was, you know, James Madison was a great story, but that was never going to be a competitive game. So you've got eleven playoff games in this format and two involved complete mismatches. And I think people would have liked to see Notre Dame or Texas or Vanderbilt for somebody else in those games. But then you're now excluding entire conference to any chance to get in the bracket.

00:43:41
Speaker 2: You know, can college football be fixed?

00:43:45
Speaker 1: As a strong word, but it just feels like there are things that makes sense that college football should be doing. Simping simple guardrails here of starting the season, maybe ending the season on New Year's Day. Maybe that'll take away the coaches leaving, maybe players leaving transfer portal I mean, it feels like college football. And I said this yesterday. They're waiting for Congress to clean up their mess.

00:44:12
Speaker 2: That that's not good.

00:44:14
Speaker 4: No, it's not. I mean it's or they're waiting for a new sheriff to ride into town because we are in the wild West and there's no rules and it's chaos. If people really knew what was going on behind the scenes, I mean, I'll tell you this is some anecdotes. There's a long snapper out there from a from prominent school, a long snapper who's this mine in his own business, very happy where he is not in the transfer portal at all. Twenty seven phone calls to a long snapper with these are major teams that are trying to get this guy, offering him Money's I'm happy where I am. I'm not in the portal, I know, But what's your number? But I'm not in the brook. What's your number? What's a long snapper's number? Is where we are and that's going on. You got kickers and punters. I think the SEC half the conference got a new kicker yesterday. And that's that's where we are, man, and and it's it's in a way you just want the system to do right by the players, but to have four thousand guys in the portal, the vast majority will not lam someplace and play as a starter and win a championship. That's that's the one percent.

00:45:19
Speaker 1: Maybe I did bring this up yesterday as well. When's the last time a player was academically ineligible? You know, growing up it happened all the time. I've never heard of any money it did happen.

00:45:34
Speaker 4: And also they also got away with murder a lot of them. Back in that there were dudes with zero point zeros who played the Blutarski grade point average. I mean, that's not what we want. I mean, there's a lot of great examples about what's right in this sport by great students who are doing it doing you know, a lot of the right things. But I don't know, that's a good question. I don't see that anymore. You know, Jesus was going to play in the playoff, but he didn't pass that final and he's gonna have to sit out. That seems kind of quaint these days, doesn't it.

00:46:03
Speaker 1: Most successful college coaches try the NFL. I mean, some of the biggest names you know in college football history, you know, save and spurry or can you see Signetti trying the NFL.

00:46:19
Speaker 4: I think he wins wherever he goes, right, we know that. I think there'd be a lot of teams intrigue. He he seems to love college football. He would not have stayed at a lower division for as long as he did, you know whether it's I mean even before James Madison, he was in small college football and loved being a teacher. And that's okay. I think they're always intrigued because you wonder, how how would your system work at the highest level of football. But I wouldn't I wouldn't rule it out. People in college have been trying to hire this guy. He signed an extension, a big contract, and there's still coming after him for trying to say I forget the contract. What does that mean these days?

00:46:59
Speaker 2: Yeah? I know Penn State was interesting. You know, there are a few of them.

00:47:02
Speaker 1: And Mike Tannenbond brought it up earlier in the week that could you see a package deal with Mendoza and Signetti to the Raiders?

00:47:10
Speaker 2: And I at.

00:47:12
Speaker 1: First I said no way, but then I don't. I mean, he makes more money than he would make in the NFL. Chris he's gonna he's gonna be the highest paid coach in college football.

00:47:23
Speaker 4: I wasn't sure if you meant Mendoza or Signetti there.

00:47:27
Speaker 2: I don't know what Mendoza makes, but.

Speaker 4: He's not making NFL top pick money, no, for sure. I mean it's interesting. I have a feel for these guys and I really wish them success. On Sundays and I said there looking at the Raiders or the Jets or say wow, I mean to go from where he's gone in Indiana, structure, order, brilliant, organization, togetherness, chemistry, love, love your brother. To go to an NFL locker room like that, where where you got problems. If you're draft first and you do it again and again, you got problems. And for Fernando to walk in there knowing how these guys are. He loves order, an organization, and things to be neat and tighty. He's very unique personality. I think that for him to survive and thrive in the chaos of an NFL doormatt locker room is seriously challenging. The fit is so important to I mean, we got you know, finally, Rice Young's in the playoff right in Carolina. It took a few years. It took the NFC South to get him there. But look what he had to go through the first couple of years. You know, they just the chaos, the revolving door of management and coaches and different offensive systems and getting getting knocked around. I mean, that's the reality for most top picks. You know, Caleb Williams landing in a good place, and he also endured some tough times and now he's going to take his team and Cam word, I hope he can get there too. But you know, Fernando to the Raiders, Man to the Jets.
