Stacy and Clinton Rank Kelly LeBrock’s Best Looks in Weird Science

WHY'D THEY WEAR THAT?

In this episode of Why’d They Wear That?, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly revisit Weird Science and rank Kelly LeBrock’s most iconic looks from the film. From the unforgettable doorway reveal to the hot pink lamé dress, the punk mall look, and the surprisingly polished goodbye outfit, they break down what works, what dates the movie, and why these costumes still leave an impression.

Along the way, they get into 1980s fashion, brooch overload, teen fantasy styling, and how costume design helps shape Lisa’s character arc from objectified fantasy to something far more interesting.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you, I believe that Lame is coming back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope it does.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it Lame?
[SPEAKER_00]: Lame.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lame.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lame.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lame or Pink Lame?
[SPEAKER_01]: Lame.
[SPEAKER_00]: Lame is what I'm thinking.
[SPEAKER_00]: But tonight, I went off of Africa.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, in case you don't know, that is Stacy London.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, I'm Clinton Kelly.
[SPEAKER_01]: We used to work together for a really long time.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're working together again, but it's not even worth.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's out of choice.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we're doing this for the fun of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: We really are.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we decided to watch television shows and movies and whatever and comment on fictional characters, rather than commenting on real people, because you can't do that anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, you're not allowed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not allowed.
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to get canceled, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Who's gonna cancel us?
[SPEAKER_00]: Violet news did?
[SPEAKER_01]: Please cancel me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's not.
[SPEAKER_00]: We can come up with one.
[SPEAKER_01]: So when we talked about movies, we wanted to watch.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, let's do weird signs.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you were like, eh, I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I love weird signs.
[SPEAKER_00]: OK, fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I am willing to love it alongside you if you teach me how.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what I decided to do was to watch it so that you don't have to.
[SPEAKER_01]: And what I came up with are Kelly LeBrox, iconic outfits, six of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like I ranked them.
[SPEAKER_01]: So what I did was I ranked them.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that I,
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious if we're on the same page.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: At the end.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I bigly remember the story to idiot boys create the perfect woman who then has to teach them how to grow up because, you know, they're modern day in cells for what I can tell.
[SPEAKER_01]: They totally are 100%.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's just, you know, do the business of, uh, when this came out, uh, weird science was released in 1985.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that was certainly before me too.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you were by definitely what John Hughes was the director and the writer and the costume designer was Marilyn Vance.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: So Marilyn Vance.
[SPEAKER_01]: Marilyn Vance.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So basically you've got two idiots Anthony Michael Hall.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know the other.
[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot in his name, Elon Mitchell Smith.
[SPEAKER_01]: ILA and he retired from acting and he is now an associate professor of English at Cal State Long Beach.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's so funny because one of my favorite movies, which I will introduce you to later date, Club Liquid Sky, the actress played both the leading actor and actress roles, and is now a psychologist in Florida.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, some people leave this industry.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're probably the smart ones, exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's smart ones.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I took copious notes, all right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So you really did.
[SPEAKER_01]: With time codes and everything, this is a lot.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to have to wear my glasses.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is not normally your handwriting.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a little messier than I'm used to.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is messy, this is messy Clinton.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's messy old Clinton.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that he knew there was a messy Clinton.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's like saying that's the shadow side of Clinton.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so let's start with the number six.
[SPEAKER_00]: Number six in rank.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna end with number one her best look.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, great.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, she throws a party with them with Wyatt and what's his face, Gary.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so she throws this party and I got to tell you that this look is her safest look of the entire movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is at about 42 minutes and 40 seconds in.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she looks beautiful, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, got a rhinestone.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's a rhinestone or sequin?
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a rhinestone chain mesh with a little bit of burnout design to it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, like it's trying to be a leopard, but it's like a devour a burn.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like a silk fabric that has rhinestones and burnouts.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's pretty it's that's pretty like intricate for 1985 it definitely is but and other parts in this movie up until this point she's been very sexy and very very trendy almost like a very trendy 21 year old would have been back in the day and here I feel like I put this at number six even though she looks beautiful I feel like it is a very safe choice for a woman who's throwing a wild teenage party she looks like the hot mom
[SPEAKER_00]: So, yes, and my question is, is this address, would did I see a low back?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's, let's watch it in motion.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so, all right, all right, so we made all the food.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, then the food just disappears.
[SPEAKER_00]: And animals, animals, that's very junkies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I love this party scene because teenagers kind of look like this back in the day.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, war bandanas and headbed here.
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of bows and all that shit.
[SPEAKER_01]: There she is, okay, so watch the back of the dress.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's got a beautiful vertical slit that's, you know, it goes pretty much all the way down.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't tell if it's a dress or a two piece because it looks like it might be a two piece.
[SPEAKER_01]: See, it's a two-piece.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, it looks like it could be a drape, like low-rise, you know, low-waists.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a very hard to say.
[SPEAKER_00]: A tunic and a short skirt, is that what you're thinking?
[SPEAKER_00]: See, but this looks like the balloon dress that Michelle fight for wearing yellow silk satin in scarfies.
[SPEAKER_00]: That bubble, and then the skinny.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a dress.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a dress.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it could be a dress.
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, the look is beautiful, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's starting right there.
[SPEAKER_01]: She looks amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: But does she look like a party gore or does she look like the kid's mom?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she definitely looks like the hostess.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like if she has not distinguished herself from the kids that she's been with all this time, it is a little weird that this is the look she winds up in.
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's stunning.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's absolutely exquisite.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so that's why I put this at number six.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so at number five.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and this is halfway through the movie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I just wanted to know because this is not the look that we are ending on.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is just that the number six and we're going to number one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're ranking these.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Number five.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now she has to go basically explain to Anthony Michael Hall's parents Gary.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, Gary.
[SPEAKER_01]: That they're they're not paying enough attention to their kid, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's going to throw a party and they have no choice.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I do like the fact that she's so authoritative.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, I mean, look at this.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a white knit, midi skirt, over black leggings.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this feels very Madonna-inspired holiday video in 1980's.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, 100%, 100%.
[SPEAKER_00]: With the hair looks like literally, she stuck her tooth in a socket.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't even look like it was a finger.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like something, it's severely wet wrong.
[SPEAKER_00]: For this too, I didn't even know you could get that kind of height
[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like it might be a wig, but it also, it's very like white snake video.
[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love the chain detail here, you know, this is sort of the Chris Cross dream detail.
[SPEAKER_00]: You mean the sister's spender, they just Chris Cross.
[SPEAKER_01]: But hold on, you'll see, it's hard to get a, see, they never stand a full body shot of her for long enough, except in a couple of key moments.
[SPEAKER_00]: which is kind of interesting since they created her.
[SPEAKER_00]: You'd think you want to see your body more.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ooh, exactly, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, to me, this looks like somebody sewed this together out of a white tank tub.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it does look like that a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Haines, three pack?
[SPEAKER_01]: But I love the fingerless gloves with the studs, the chain detail.
[SPEAKER_01]: You notice the white straps that are attached to the tube dress sort of go crisscross.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a smedgeers skirt.
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I, I, I realized this is of the time of the day.
[SPEAKER_00]: I should be more empathetic.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like this is just so unattractive.
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you really do?
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess if I put it number five, I hear you.
[SPEAKER_00]: What I guess I'm freaking out about is like, this is so evidently the boy fantasy in, you know, of what like the perfect girl is gonna be in the 1980s.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess it's hard for me to say, she's so beautiful.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's no way to kind of make her look ugly, but you can make her look crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And to me, they're going for like a little caricature over.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, they totally, I mean, at this scene in the movie, she's like telling the dad, you know, you're out of shape.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll kick your ass.
[SPEAKER_01]: So like, she's supposed to be tough.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, chips, dips, chains, whips.
[SPEAKER_01]: You typical teenage or do you kind of think?
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember that?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's, you know, I remember you quoting that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not really a case.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mean, dips, chains, whips.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're having a party.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's going to be sex and drugs, rock and roll, chips, dips, chains, whips.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you're basic high school or do you type of thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: In 1995, when I heard that, I was like, okay, I'm in.
[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't ready for an Orgy in 85.
[SPEAKER_01]: I took which will at least 88.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was Beth involved.
[SPEAKER_01]: Beth was certainly not involved in the.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, what do you think?
[SPEAKER_01]: You're not at that into this look.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I guess I should be because I feel like probably when was this 1985?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I was definitely wearing the same thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I look at it now and I'm like I definitely feel like that was put together with some t-shirts in this.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I've seen you in a very similar silhouette to this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that's probably true.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, let's move on to look number four.
[SPEAKER_01]: This happens at the beginning of the movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the iconic shot of Kelly LeBrock as Lisa.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come in.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the red mist.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, they have literally just created their idea of the perfect woman, right there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Boom, let's pause.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're just listening to this right now, imagine sort of a straight cut bikini panty in navy blue with a white man and then a white mock turtle mock turtle sweatshirt that's been cropped to write under her movies and it's got a racing stripe on the under arm in the navy blue that matches the panty.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I, I mean, I have paused this and I got right up next to my television to see if she is wearing a shoe or she just on her toes.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think she's wearing a shoe.
[SPEAKER_00]: She might be wearing a shoe.
[SPEAKER_00]: She might be wearing a shoe.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say, too.
[SPEAKER_01]: A loose side shoe to give or plastic strap.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: To give the leg line a little more length.
[SPEAKER_00]: I got to go with that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that they don't mess around in movies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: You want your lady to look hot and sexy and long as possible, you're going to put her in a yellow.
[SPEAKER_01]: And but they, you know what they don't do is like make the heels stand out at all.
[SPEAKER_01]: They just sort of make it well-wake.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, they make it go away because you don't need it for the, you just want it for the silhouette.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, she is stunningly beautiful.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, it's so funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was saying we've been talking about the fact that like we don't really come in on bodies.
[SPEAKER_00]: This was so clearly a movie about her body.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of hard to get her out.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think in the context of 1985, this really was seen as the perfect body.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like no-in-the-block was seen as, I mean, she did a whole campaign.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't hate me because I'm beautiful.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's right.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, again, this was before 90s heroin chic.
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is still kind of curvy and healthy and beautiful.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So,
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally hot look.
[SPEAKER_01]: It this has been seared into my brain.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can I mean for years backlight.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come on.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's absolutely stunning.
[SPEAKER_00]: It really is amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this will be sort of echoed later.
[SPEAKER_01]: Probably her last scene echoes her first scene.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I'll show you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: We've got the first look we ever see her in iconic, but okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Style wise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe all she did was take us is her in chop or they did.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: How do they make her by the way?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, do you know, remember?
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like they took a Barbie doll, or I don't know if it was actually Barbie, but some sort of like plastic doll.
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh-huh.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they attached little electrodes to the doll.
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh-huh.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then they fed all this information into a computer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-huh.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And with all, they fed all these pictures into a scanner of like the perfect woman and all that.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, I don't know, they put bras on their head and something happened.
[SPEAKER_00]: And something happens.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was stupid.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just ran it through that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Intel fantasy of making a woman, all you need is a Barbie doll.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought we would take a little bit of a break in our countdown.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And just do an honorable mention to men's fashion at the time, or at least men's fashion in this movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I will tell you the way some of these guys dress is not like any mail that went to my
[SPEAKER_00]: right there, just right there, what is happening?
[SPEAKER_00]: We've got Robert Downey Jr. in Burmuda shorts with a studded belt that feels like a kind of weird Goth Neo romantic, kind of shirt with like what, like a blazer and broochie?
[SPEAKER_01]: He's wearing a blazer then.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's got two belts, one hangs lower than the other.
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's layering belts and he's also attaching broaches, broaches, those are broaches and pins to the lapels of his jacket.
[SPEAKER_01]: And now he's also rolled up the sleeves of his shirt and pushed up the sleeves of the jacket.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which is what I would have expected, Melanie Griffith to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: in working girl yet.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's got socks on, yellow socks, yellow socks.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what kind of look is this?
[SPEAKER_00]: And what kind of shirt is that?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a boat?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a pussy bow?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think so.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it, it does look very blousey though, doesn't it?
[SPEAKER_00]: He's got it popped up.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we said, it's like an Oxford.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's popped his collar.
[SPEAKER_01]: So now let me tell you, I was in full
[SPEAKER_01]: meaning at my school.
[SPEAKER_01]: Your school that heartthrob mini would have worn that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not even like the heartthrob mini, but like, you know, the dude from Amsterdam.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, as in Europe.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like, you know, like a foreign exchange student.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, look, I feel like we give Europeans a pass.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, we do.
[SPEAKER_01]: There was a whole different vibe in Europe.
[SPEAKER_01]: But in the United States in 1985, there's probably only one high school on the planet where that actually would have flown.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, probably mine.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Manhattan.
[SPEAKER_01]: In my high school, I would 100% would have gotten killed if I had worn a broach.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I feel like there was a whole section of New York City that was filled with boys that looked like those who were wearing eyeliner in 1985 and like, you know, loved wham.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I wasn't even allowed to admit that I liked wham.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's where I came from.
[SPEAKER_01]: I came from the hood.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
[SPEAKER_01]: The vast upper of an hood.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: We had a different high school experience.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my God.
[SPEAKER_01]: Very, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was being stuffed in lockers.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I was never stuffed in a locker.
[SPEAKER_00]: You were never stuffed in a locker.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was too tall to stuffed in a locker.
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let's get back to Kelly LeBrock as Lisa in weird science and look number three out of my top six.
[SPEAKER_01]: After she is first created, she takes the boys out to a club called the candy bar.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now the candy bar spelled with a K, by the way, when they walk and there is a record scratch.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not sure if the record scratch is because she looks so phenomenal or because they're so out of place there.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like almost a black club.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very mixed race club, which is supposed to make them feel uncomfortable, I think.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, which is also very, in 1985.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so what we're looking at here?
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, I would wear that dress.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's hot.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is basically a hot pink metallic lame.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you, I believe that lame is coming back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope it does.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's true.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it lame lame?
[SPEAKER_01]: Lemme?
[SPEAKER_01]: Lemme?
[SPEAKER_01]: Lemme?
[SPEAKER_00]: Lomu is what I'm thinking, but it's an island up of Africa.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was like, well, man.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I'm pretty sure I'm saying the main right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_01]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_01]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main, the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, all right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the dress has, let's just explain it for anybody who's listening.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like an excellent rap list.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's got a sweetheart neckline.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it goes to just below the knee, I believe.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's wearing it with, there's a black, lame, a giant, black, lame, bow, ala, Madonna, and material girl.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, not on her head.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not on her nose, on her booth, sort of at the waistline.
[SPEAKER_00]: It really is more than a sweetheart, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's really, it's a, it's a strapless, like almost like bodice, but it, like corset fitting.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then she's wearing it with black opera gloves to match the sash and bow and chandelier earring.
[SPEAKER_01]: Chandelier earring in a big rhinestones, and she's got a black clutch.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this costume designer loves a clutch, because she does wear a clutch in a couple different scenes.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's too funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think about these clutches now from the 80s, and I like that they fit a phone, not a phone from the 90s, right up at a phone.
[SPEAKER_01]: They fit a phone book, they're so big.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I gotta tell you, I think that this look is hot as fuck.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, and this is only number three.
[SPEAKER_00]: This couldn't be leather, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't cut.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's got her hair just so you know, in like a pompadour.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like really shack.
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the lipstick matches the gold and the main.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what?
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I have an aversion to this kind of pompadour look with curly hair, because it reminds me of the way my hair was in high school.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you just cut off the back, that's exactly what my hair looks like.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, out.
[SPEAKER_01]: I swear to God.
[SPEAKER_01]: Intentionally, or did you ever try to straighten it?
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, because it was the 80s.
[SPEAKER_00]: You was like, you went with your natural curl.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was, um, it was hard for everybody.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a terrible time.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was a terrible time.
[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about that.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was the worst time.
[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about the 80s as being amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which they kind of wore.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, when the Coke was that color, it was a different story.
[SPEAKER_01]: When the Coke was the hot thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Pink?
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you remember, you were destined?
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're just in pink cocaine was like a big in the 80s.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, this is the difference between growing up in Manhattan and growing up in Long Island.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's brutal at this price.
[SPEAKER_00]: We make $18 million on this deal alone.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not 8 to 9.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like $80 million on this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, Scarface.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scarface, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, great.
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is my number three.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's play a little bit.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we can show how it sort of moves.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's ready to party.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, what records scratch when she comes in.
[SPEAKER_01]: And do you think the record scratch is because she looks so amazing or she's there with two teenage boys or because they're all white, they're white.
[SPEAKER_01]: And half of the people in the bar, but seem to be black or of color.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I think it's maybe that she's this hot woman with these underage boys.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I would find that odd.
[SPEAKER_00]: That would probably stop me at my tracks.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what is happening?
[SPEAKER_01]: She does give them fake ideas, which are kind of hilarious.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, that's amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[SPEAKER_00]: Can we just talk about the fact that Gary's tie knot is like, looks like he didn't, that he tied it in a bow.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like he did, it's so small.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so, yeah, they weren't that, that tie knots were super small in the 80s for some reason.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, so tiny.
[SPEAKER_00]: It makes them all look like big lollipop.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like those ties didn't even have any like backing to them.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were just like strip of fabric.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And all the knit jackets that guys wore with shoulder pads.
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember going to a sweet 16 wearing a version of that jacket that Gary is wearing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this does not surprise you.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, number two out of six on our countdown.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so this is when Lisa is at the mall.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is, this is a lot of luck.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, wait, just go back to, to, to, to, to.
[SPEAKER_01]: Pause, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Pause and go back just a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just this line of kids, look at this girl.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's my hair.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's my hair.
[SPEAKER_01]: Dude, a lot of girls had that haircut.
[SPEAKER_00]: I really, it was like, we were all trying to be pet Benitar.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, I feel like girls who had that haircut in high school turned out to be gay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, here we are.
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to go through my high school yearbook and look at them.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to say, actually we should.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go through yours.
[SPEAKER_01]: That would be amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that anybody in my class had my haircut except for me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like the entire softball and field hockey team stood at my school.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going back in time a little bit here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, you have to make her create her.
[SPEAKER_01]: OK, then they take her out on the town to show her off a little bit.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they want to take her to the mall.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she shows up at the mall.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this pink and black and white print sort of like a punk tube top.
[SPEAKER_01]: Is that what it is?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a tube top.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then she's got a denim jacket over it with this oversized pop shawl collar.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then on top of that, she's got a sleeveless black leather or faux leather.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's one piece now, because it looks like the skirt.
[SPEAKER_01]: It might be sewn together, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the skirt and it's made of the same material.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then she's got all these punk bracelets stacked up.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's wearing black gloves and then she's got that denim skirt with the black material.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've got to tell you, I love this look.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's great, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: I put it at number two.
[SPEAKER_00]: You put it at number two.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I struggle because I don't know what there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I would do two is two and three is three or three is two and two is three.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, you don't have to decide right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to say that.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just sharing out loud.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so this is a lot of look.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like even the extras are passing her and being like, oh, what the fuck is she wearing?
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the fringe on the side, there's a lot, you're right.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot going on.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just think it's a stunning look.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's got her hair sort of piled up with these ringlets falling around her face.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is a costume design.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't just like we're going to throw her in a couple things that are popular right now at the moment.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is a really sort of punk-inspired look.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just think it's fantastic.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is that if you want to play along at home, this is at 35 minutes and about one second or so.
[SPEAKER_01]: super chic.
[SPEAKER_01]: Look at her.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my god, right there when she turns.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look over her shoulder.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a punk t-shirt that was turned into a tube top.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't think you're supposed to be able to remember.
[SPEAKER_00]: I see.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this look almost has enough going for it for me to be like, you could do something with this in the real world right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's that good.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like you could see this walking around Manhattan.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it would be so chic.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I could do without the fringe on the sides.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I feel like we could just take those tassels and rip them right off.
[SPEAKER_01]: You feel like it's gilding the lily?
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, I think the broaches are plenty.
[SPEAKER_01]: I look at, I mean, just this still shot right here, 35, 33.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the amount of broaches and pins going on, like, what the fuck was everybody like, I don't know, but you know, the pins, the buttons, those were bands.
[SPEAKER_00]: That I do remember.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: That I remember boys having on denim jackets, like, you know, the favorite bands.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's all I've ever had.
[SPEAKER_01]: Boys.
[SPEAKER_00]: Boys.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: All the girls with Pad Fennetaur haircuts are all gained today.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't say that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't say that.
[SPEAKER_00]: You said these thought they might.
[SPEAKER_01]: They might be.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to go back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to be sued by anybody in my high school.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a statutory.
[SPEAKER_00]: What are you saying for?
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, oh my God, do we see her makeup there for a second?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, look at her makeup!
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my God, she's fucking stunning.
[SPEAKER_00]: That lip, I mean, her lips are, they're just crazy.
[SPEAKER_01]: And these lips were in a fourth pillar.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, that's what I always wish I had naturally.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I'm not, I'm kind of over comparing myself to other people or like, end being other people.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I remember being young and thinking like, what would it be like to have lips like that?
[SPEAKER_00]: What would it be like to be that beautiful?
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, how do you walk down the street looking like that?
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's interesting, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: The first time we're going all over the place in this episode, but the first time I ever met a celebrity, it was... Oh, here we go.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was working at Marie Claire.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, where are you?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I met Courtney Cox because we did a makeover together for an issue.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I was the editor and she was like sort of directing the makeover.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, how cute.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I met Courtney Cox and this was, I mean, how many years ago?
[SPEAKER_01]: This has got to be almost 30 years ago.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just looked at her, and I was like, oh, my God, I didn't say this, obviously.
[SPEAKER_01]: You are so beautiful that you can't just exist in the world.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like you have to be famous.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's how I felt about Jessica Beale.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can't look her directly in the face.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like looking into the sun.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, Jessica Beale is...
[SPEAKER_00]: It's insane.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's insane.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not normal.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Elsa's a beautiful Jennifer Beale.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, oh my god, a thousand percent and I'm telling you, Halle Berry and person same thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll have never met her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, this skin, this skin is the truth.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the truth.
[SPEAKER_01]: Some people just won the genetic lottery, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: They just won the genetic lottery.
[SPEAKER_01]: Kelly LeBrock is one of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: I completely agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know what I say?
[SPEAKER_01]: Good for you.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a completely different thing, but I remember the same thing because I'm not a twilight fan and I don't know how I saw a twilight movie because it's just I could give a shit about where wolves and vampires going after each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember thinking what must it be like to be Kristen Stewart?
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I didn't think of her as like so stunningly beautiful that she shouldn't exist in the world.
[SPEAKER_00]: That this idea of just being, what's it like to be the prettiest, like most popular girl at school?
[SPEAKER_00]: What must that be like?
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's be nice, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but I mean, I felt like she's just that kind of pretty where she's just pretty, like that milk toast pretty.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, she's now she's something completely.
[SPEAKER_00]: Transform.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so you want to know my number one look in this movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, it's at the end.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's Lisa's goodbye.
[SPEAKER_01]: Look now.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to surprise you a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: It does.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very prim and proper.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, would you blow back here?
[SPEAKER_00]: I get it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love this so much.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is that brooch?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a whiting and Davis silver mesh brooch?
[SPEAKER_01]: Might be, so let's just explain.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is an oversized Tuxedo style blazer with a notch lapel that's in black.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the Tuxedo jacket itself is actually in a black and top diamond pattern.
[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to see what was giving it this textured kind of look.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's not a woven, but a print, believe it or not.
[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like a wolf fin.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, it is a prank.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so you tried to avoid stopped it just at this part.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I could see it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, you're absolutely right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so she's wearing a Tixino shirt of the knee.
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
[SPEAKER_01]: There was no, I think there was some kissing, though, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I don't remember, but I would be like, if this had been about her teaching them to be men by having sex with them, I think I might throw up in my mouth.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, she certainly did not do that.
[SPEAKER_01]: So then she's got the Tuxedo shirt underneath it, and then where your Tuxedo, actually, where your bow tie would be, or your neck ruff,
[SPEAKER_01]: or whatever, you know, she's got this beautiful, like crystal broach in a diamond shape here.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's got her hair pulled back and her makeup is very subdued.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that this look, there's something about it that, I don't know, it makes me tangle.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's something, I try to figure out why I love it so much.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that she just looks like somebody who's not trying too hard that has this effortless sheek to her.
[SPEAKER_00]: What's famous for character?
[SPEAKER_01]: Lisa.
[SPEAKER_00]: So do you think this is Lisa's arc?
[SPEAKER_00]: Because she goes from being very, very sexy.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just something that feels more sophisticated actually even more human and less objectified, perhaps.
[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: She's not really selling.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's not leading with sex here.
[SPEAKER_01]: right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not at all.
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the same doorway where she appeared in the first place into the bikini.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the crop top where it was all about her body.
[SPEAKER_01]: And now it's really all about like just her.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's just giving off this beautiful like sweet vibe.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know what is going on with that fucking broach.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a button cover?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a what?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it crystal?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it is it is it mesh, but I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Can we bring that back?
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's bring it back.
[SPEAKER_00]: That placement is fabulous.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I just want to know what it is.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't we do a whole line of, might they wear that?
[SPEAKER_01]: Except for it is.
[SPEAKER_01]: What are they wearing?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we can certainly do band buttons.
[SPEAKER_01]: Bell, I don't want Bringles back.
[SPEAKER_00]: What?
[SPEAKER_01]: Where are they?
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, what do you think of my rankings?
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually, in the comments, I'd be happy to hear your comments as well, and we're like, you'd like to hear my comments, okay?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking about the phone.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, put it on the comment.
[SPEAKER_00]: Put it on the comment.
[SPEAKER_00]: Put it on the comment.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're being with my ranking or not.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, or put it in the comments that you agree with my ring.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what is your ring?
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I agree with six.
[SPEAKER_00]: I agree with five.
[SPEAKER_00]: I agree with four.
[SPEAKER_00]: I agree with your honorable mentions across the board.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's weird that there are so many broaches.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know that broach revsons was the 80s because we've been trying to bring it back ever since.
[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about a fucking broach.
[SPEAKER_00]: Every episode of one of them is so to what not to wear.
[SPEAKER_00]: Put it on a hat, put it on a scarf, put it on your bag, put it on a tube, put it on a belt, wear a broach.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so then honorable mention that's a bad mention, but I am going to reorder your top three.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, go.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am going to go with number one as number three.
[SPEAKER_01]: Really, hergabilec is your number three.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look is my number three.
[SPEAKER_00]: The denim and leather look is number two.
[SPEAKER_00]: At the mall, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the pink strapless dress is one for me.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just, woo!
[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's pretty amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I had a hard time ranking those two.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I really understand that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this was as top assignment you gave yourself.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know, I'm not going to do this again.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's too much work.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so much work.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so much work, anyway.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it really is hard, especially when you do have, like, a great costume designer, I think that Kelly LeBrock's fashion in this movie or Lisa's fashion in this movie is very much about, like, it's very much a character, because she's created, so is everything about her, so is the whole aesthetic, so is the whole fantasy of her.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, she's a convection, like a literal convection, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like your hairstyle.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's it, that's it in.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a literal convection.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good question.
[SPEAKER_01]: I call my hair just saying, you know, as an elaborate convection to conceal my flaws.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, please, what flaws?
[SPEAKER_00]: Plenty of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Plenty of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're going to be humble.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: I like, you know what?
[SPEAKER_01]: I really like your point of, you know, her character arc.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the wardrobe supporting it like at the end, she's not, she's not a sex symbol anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, she's more than that, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: She's clearly had and obvious impact on like sort of maturing these young individuals.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's, there's, there's more, you know, she gets the credit a little bit at the end that she deserves.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's something a little bit more respected about her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like not even her appearance, just like about the, you know, the way that they treat her and, and she's accomplished this thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, should we, should we rate that costume design in this movie?
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, I think I would probably give it five-tits out of six.
[SPEAKER_01]: Five-tits out of six.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I'm going to give it eight broaches out of nine.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, you can't do nine broaches.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have to do nine broaches out of ten.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can't do an odd number of broaches.
[SPEAKER_00]: I did broaches.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, for broaches, we do it out of the scale of ten.
[SPEAKER_00]: Broaches are always a ten scale.
[SPEAKER_00]: eight out of nine, broaches, what to do with the broaches and broaches?
[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for tuning in.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, what do you mean by that?
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, now you're just trying to, like, it's like, you just took a hook and you're trying to get me off.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I 100%.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why are they wearing that?
[SPEAKER_00]: Why are they wearing that?
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for watching, a special thank you to our sponsor, the Nicarbacher Hotel.
[SPEAKER_00]: Find out more, explore all our shows at altru.com.
[SPEAKER_00]: And as always, keep asking.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why can't we wear that?
