Now College football not as inspiring and dramatic, but pro football certainly those one o'clock games towards the end, and you had a lot of drama. Block kicks, we had punt returns, we had interception returns, fumble returns, a little bit of everything there, and maybe one of the worst beats ever in the history of the NFL with the Eagles coming back to cover against the Rams. It's one of those where and having been a former gambler, I've already chalked that up. Now I want to see if I could get some action on the four to thirty five game. I already know I'm winning this one. Now, all of a sudden, I'm going, you know what, maybe I'll put Nickel on this. Yeah, I got some money to play with her. Maybe I put a dime on this. And then all of a sudden, the only way you can lose is if they blocked the kick and they run it back for a touchdown, which is exactly what they did. That's one of the worst beats in the history of beats. And it's a three hundred pound lineman who's going to score the touchdown there? Wow, But the Eagles come back to beat the Rams Chargers over the Broncos, the Brown's over the Packers, and that's one of those where it's ten to nothing, and I kept thinking, what's going on with the Packers, like it's just you know, Brown's defense played well, Packers defense played well. And it was just one of those games where that's where in the survivor pool where you go, yeah, you know what, I'll take the Packers. I can get through this week. I got the Packers this week. And then all of a sudden, okay, it's ten three, and then okay, there's an interception. Okay, now it's ten ten. Oh boy, and then all of a sudden, we have a game winning field goal. And green Bay was three hundred I think when okay, here's the stat So the Brown score thirteen in the final three minutes and thirty eight seconds. Green Bay had won three hundred consecutive games when they were up by at least ten points in the final four minutes of a game. The last time they lost a game like this before yesterday the Baltimore Colts in nineteen sixty seven, when Vince Lombardi was the Packers head coach and Don Shula was the Colts head coach. Oh yeah, Saturday Day I brought to you by a Penai America. Every team is allowed one of those games, and sometimes you can afford a loss like that. Now, there are other teams where you go, well, that's going to come back and haunt you when it comes to winning a division home field advantage, and you start to wonder, and I think you get a pretty good idea of how good your team is. You know, three games in now, I got a pretty good idea. Now, I don't know about the Texans. I'm watching and I'm thinking that defense is one of the top three defenses in the NFL. They're zero to three and C. J. Stroud pick up a white courtesy Foe. They're just like Jacksonville. I still don't know. I mean, I'm watching and I'm going, okay, you know a lot of drops. You know Trevor Lawrence, you know, his numbers should have been a whole lot better. I think the Broncos are still going to be okay, and that's a good win for the Chargers, the Bears over the Cowboys. I have no idea about either one of those teams. I mean, I know Dallas has a terrible defense and could probably use a pass rusher. When you can't sack a quarterback who was sacked sixty eight times last year, that seems like that's a problem. And Caleb Boylliams looked pretty good, had some fun that defensive. You know, the secondary, they paid some guys. Bland and Diggs got paid and they got roughed up there. But I don't know how good Dallas is. I think Dallas and then Ceedee Lamb goes out with an injury. Dak had a couple of interceptions. But the Bears, I mean the Bears deet and it's not the monsters of the Midway the Bucks. Baker Mayfield's getting into that hey game on the line, ball in his hands. He's almost like where Russell Wilson was seven or eight years ago, where it's like, all right, just get me the ball. And he's a closer. It's probably the best compliment I can give him. He's a closer. And he did that yesterday with the Jets Vikings over the Bengals. This was all about the Vikings defense. They were like, it doesn't matter who's quarterbacking, we're coming after you. And Carson Wentz is fine. It's not that much of a drop off, but he didn't have to do that much. Mike Colts over the Titans. Titans are bad, and I kept thinking, you know, they probably could use a better coach. Oh, that's right, they had one with my Rabel. Oh yeah, they could have had a maybe a good running Oh yeah, they did have a good running back in there wide receive. Oh that's right. He's in Chicago. But the Colts look great. Jonathan Taylor. Is there a better player with less publicity? If I look at the ratio in the last four or five years with him, he's he's pretty good. He's pretty good. Uh, Seahawks role, I have Chiefs over the Giants. Chiefs are boring. I mean they should have been down at halftime. It's just there's no excitement it. I mean, that was a rough game. And Chris collins Worth man is he loved himself? Sir Patrick Mahomes. It's like, Chris, come on, come on, slow down home. Oh. It felt like it was a Hallmark greeting card. Every time he went back to pass, It's like he's great, but he wasn't great. It's like, okay, all right backwards, no look passed, but then they didn't complete it. But no other quarterback could have Like what who else could do that? Throw a crappy pass and then recover? Oh Man College football. I watched a lot of the Clemson Syracuse game, Texas Tech dominated Utah, Michigan over Nebraska, Oklahoma and Auburn. Uh the Indiana Indiana game. Say goodbye to Illinois, mean you lose by fifty three points? Oh my god, LSU, Miami, Oregon, Florida State, Texas s they roll, but Indiana, I said, Indiana could put up point I didn't know they're going to put up that many points. The Clemson lost to Syracuse once again. Lewis Riddick was on the call with that and Dabosweeney. You can't have that kind of performance out of your team at home after you have a press conference where you're calling out the media for calling you out. Mike Gundy with Oklahoma State. I mean, you're seeing some of these coaches and this is what Nick Saban was talking about. You have to get up to speed with today's game. And I'm not talking about the actual speed of a player or the game. I'm talking about you got to get up and understand exactly You've got to be aggressive and talking to somebody about Mike Gundy that he has not been aggressive with recruiting, you know, Dabbo with nil transfer portal. I mean, this drove Saban out of the game. But you can't sit there and have your head and sand and go, you know what, We're still gonna get great players. You are, but so are other teams, and they get them by just paying them. And you know, we talk about firing a coach, you know, Mike Gundy, Well you also fire the assistance as well, so it's not just a coach. You're gonna have to fire an entire staff. There when you talk about the money, and I know somebody can write a check for this, but they have been non competitive and that's what's surprising Syracuse. Syracuse played well. They they were the better team and it showed. But Clemson at home, Yeah, that's one of those what And I'm watching, I'm going, okay, where's Caid club nickname? You know, and he threw I think three touchdown passes, but you're losing get home. Just surprised and even Nebraska. I watched that and I thought Nebraska would win. I thought maybe, okay, maybe, like when are they making this turnaround?

Speaker 2: You know, the days that Tom Osborne are long gone, long gone. And it shows Nebraska is just a team. They are They're just a team. And you know, Oklahoma's had its moments. I mean those those were top five teams for a long, long, long, long time. But Oklahoma big win against Auburn. But Nebraska, those are the games you gotta win. I mean, Michigan's not a great team, but Nebraska, if we're waiting for them, we may be waiting a lot longer than we thought.

Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't know if that loss, you know, you lose and you had a chance to win. I don't Well, sometimes losses count like one and a half losses. You know, does that herds you a home field? Do you win your division? You know, Chargers have won all three games they have been against divisional opponents, I believe.

Speaker 2: I mean, that's great momentum there. And when you have one of those losses, just you know, at the end of the year, is Denver looking at that and going you know that they might look at the Cold's game because that's the one you know they should have won and didn't. That might be the one where you go, hey, that cost us, Yes, Todd ken Good or very good teams have moral victories.

Speaker 2: Say well, it was against the Super Bowl champs on their field. They should have won the game. When you're up twenty six seves, Yes, yes, I think if it would been reversed and you know they were they were the ones coming back, and then you go, okay, man, you had a pretty good stand against a really good team. I mean the Eagles weren't anything special until they needed to be. And then Jalen Hurts all of a sudden, you know, look great and leading them to three touchdowns. But to lose like that, that that's that's one of those It stays with you. It feels like a little bit longer. Who else is on the list?

Speaker 2: Oh boy, well, if you believe in the Patriots, then that's that's probably the game that's going to keep you out of the playoffs. And you have the fumbles and they are you know, you're you're scoring, you're moving the ball. On the Steelers, Oh yeah, that one's tough, tough, that's tough. That's not idea the pack the Packers probably you know that that won't hurt them. Now, maybe home field advantage that that's whenever I see a loss that it is that bad for a team that's that good. And I always think, Okay, are you on the road in the second round of the playoffs?

Speaker 2: That's where championships are, you know, one and loss. When you think about did we have home field advantage? You know, now the Chiefs have gone wherever they need to go, they can win. But some of these other teams, like this game with the Lions and the Ravens tonight, this might be one of those home field advantage type things.

Now they kind of cooled off.

I thought that he would be a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback this year. And you know Jonathan Taylor's been great. Yes, Marvin comeback player. Well, i'd say right now, probably so. But they finally punted on their third drive. So that was a streak of nineteen drives without a punt. That's the longest such streak to begin a season since at least two thousand.

So, Lewis, what I love about you as an analyst when I'm listening to you call the Syracuse Clemson game is you don't hide your distaste for something when something is bad or something bothers you. You don't try to mask that you've grown Sometimes. I appreciate that so very enjoyable listening to you guys do that game. At what point did you think Syracuse was a better team than Clemson.

Speaker 6: Well, I don't know if they're well, let's just say this one through ont's to say eighty. I don't know if they're a better team in terms of the individual players. I think Clemson is very talented as far as the kind of kids they have on the roster. Yeah, but that makes it even worse. Exactly exactly, that's my point. That's my point. I think right out of the gate you could see that Syracuse had a different mentality. And look, Devo told us that when we talked to him. Really, this game is about a mentality. It's about how are guys or are our guys going to go ahead and play up to their potential? Are they going to accept the challenge? Are they gonna be sick and tired of being sick and tired of losing the two games that they lost to Tech into the LSU, which are basically what one possession type games where they could have won the game, And now are they gonna rise up? And earlier in the game you saw they weren't ready for it, and Syracuse was like guess what. We're pulling out all the stops, fran Brown said, We're pulling out all the stops. We're putting the ball up in the air. We're gonna put it up to our sixty three six four wide receivers who we think has an advantage. We're gonna have surprise on side kicks. We're gonna run the football better, and we've run it in the past two years, right at the heart of your team, where you supposedly have two or maybe three first rounders on your defensive line, and we're gonna smack them right in the mouth. And how are you gonna respond? How are you gonna respond? Clemson? And right out of the gate, I was sitting there going, they're not And how many people picked them on game day? How many people picked them, probably in our own crew, to think this is a get right game for Clemson. They're gonna blow Syracuse out. Syracuse struggled with yukon. Syracuse got beat up by Tennessee in Week one. There's no way they can play with him. I'm telling you, as you know you've covered sports for a long time, Football in particular is about an attitude and the mentality and there's something wrong with the attitude, the mindset, and the mentality of the players at Clemson right now. For whatever reason, they are just not able to dial in and maintain consistent performance. And fran Brown, you better get the guy some respect. After the season he had last year, cos in that team to ten and two, and they give him the one of the hardest schedules in all of FBS this year, and now he comes out and goes down to Death Valley and wins there like they won. That guy is for real, man, they are for real. Syracuse is on the up and up.

Speaker 2: These things don't happen overnight. Mike Gundhy didn't forget how to coach football at Oklahoma State and Dabbo didn't forget to how to coach at Clemson. But it doesn't feel like they are caught up with the times of college football. Saban talked about this. This drove him out of the game. You gotta be anil, you gotta be transferred portal friendly, and you know these are these are Hall of Fame coaches that are getting embarrassed.

Speaker 6: You know what. Look, I love Nick to death. Okay, obviously the guy taught me basically everything I know about football him and built. I don't necessarily agree that you have to be like gung ho, like one hundred percent into the nil transfer portal arena in order to compete. Look, obviously, when you look at a team like Florida State that revamps their offensive line, revamps both coordinators, and all of a sudden, they go from a what were they two and twelve last year? I mean, and I saw that. I saw the beginning of that slide last year, and we did their game against Boston College to now this year being the seventhenth great team in the country we're gonna see on And they did it in large part by getting a new quarterback, getting a new offensive coordinator, holding new offensive line, a bunch of guys coming on the defensive side, and all of a sudden, it turns Davie's got good players. You know, they got Will Helt out of the transfer portal from Purdue. Who's their best defensive player this year? But Peter Woods, TJ. Parker, and these guys Sammy Brown, Wade Wood as Brian westco these duds are all four and five star kids. They're all four and five star guys who are good player. There's something though, that doesn't connect. That doesn't that they're not able to get across to these guys as far as playing consistently for sixty minutes and from week to week, there's just something weird. Look Bill Bill just revamped his entire roster. Belichick down in North Carolina. Right, They're all in the transfer portal. Deon's all in the transfer portal out in Colorado. It's not working for them. It's not all of a sudden putting them at the top of the heap. I think what they're what people are are saying, though, is maybe Dabo could be a little bit more selective and a little bit more of a participant in terms of finding maybe a couple more pieces that could help get him back into the national title contention picture. And I don't disagree with that, But I don't think that all of a sudden he is doing something that everyone needs to like hammer him for him and say, well, you know what, he's just lost it because he doesn't want to play in the transfer a portal. Nick also has been the person who has said this, if you you can go into transfer a portal and you can go gung ho and you can throw a bunch of money at these guys if you want. But if you've picked the wrong guys, as he says, you're s hi t out of luck, and then then what then what are you gonna do? So I think there's a fine line, man, there's a fine line.

Speaker 6: I don't know if there's great there? Look, I think right now, I think Miami has the potential to be a great team, I think, but George is going to be there in the end. We'll we'll we'll see what Ohio State looks like when it's all said and done. I think there there's a different We'll see what Penn State. We're gonna find out about them this week against Oregon. I don't know if there's great teams. I don't know if there's one team that's separating themselves from everyone else. But I think we have some very very quality teams right now that it's going that is going to make uh the CFP very very interesting and very very hotly contested, which I think is this great for Cougela. Well you see it with the ratings so far this year, it's it's as good as season as I can remember recently.

The Jackson Dart Do you play him the easy man? They looked uninspired against the Chiefs, And I'm just not sure when is a good time to bring in a rookie quarterback now.

Speaker 6: Now it's it's it's tough. Look. I respect Russ, I really do. I respect his entire career, his process, how he's conducted himself, all that. I think obviously we have to kind of look and you know, with proper context, the performance that he had a week ago against Dallas. We saw what Dallas is defensively, we saw it yesterday. They're gonna struggle. They'll be the worst defense in the league this year. We also saw what Russ looks like against the championship caliber defense, which is what Kansas City has. And we saw how he looked in crunch times like I couldn't understand some decision making. He was that that that you saw on display from him late in that football game, throwing the football out of the back of the end, it's like, Rus, what are you doing? Like, you're not even giving you guys a chance? What do you like? Come on, I don't. I don't believe in the whole you ruined quarterbacks by playing them too early in particular, Well, let me put it this way. It's a case by case thing. We saw it last year with Drake May. Maybe a lot of people thought you would ruin Drake May in his rookie season if you played him too early. He inspired the football team. Okay, you thought, you know, maybe in Washington Jay and Daniels. Can he handle being the starting quarterback from week one? Yeah? He handled it just fine. He took them all the way to the NFC title game. I think Jackson played a lot of football Ole Miss. He was very well schooled at an SEC school. He infuses that football team with really with confidence. You can see they're starting to lose the leak neighbors. From a metal standpoint. He looked so he looked so distraught again last night. It's like, look, you gotta be careful. You gotta be careful. You got to kind of like safeguard the rest of the football team, you know, as far as keeping these guys engaged, and I think Jackson could do that for the rest of this team. He could give them some hope. He can get the fan base some hope, although they're not the ones playing the games. Long story short, put him in there now, But do you put him in there now?

Speaker 2: Putting him in there for a home game against the Chargers or a road game against the Saints.

Speaker 6: I think I had mentioned, like back in the preseason that that game against the Saints on the road would probably be a good time to put him in there because he's on the road against him maybe a quote unquote inferior opponent than what the Chargers look like right now, So maybe that is the time. I don't know. I would just do it much sooner rather than later. I wouldn't be opposed to doing it this coming week. Obviously. You would like for it to be a setup to where he could come out of the gates really humming and on fire and feeling confident and not having the weight of the home crowd on his shoulders. But I don't think Jackson really cares. I think the guy's played enough football at a high enough level when you're talking about college to where he doesn't really care about that and honestly, this offense, the kind of things that they do with this offense when he's in there, the way they run, the hurry up, the way in which they spread it out and kind of have him do a lot of the things he did at all. Miss. Look, I think that's gonna work regardless of whether you're in New Orleans or you're at home against a tough opponent like the Chargers. Just put him in there. This team needs, they need an infusion of energy because right now, I mean, they just look like dead man walking again. And how many years has that been the case at the beginning of the season with the Giants consecutively. Now this is the same old story.

Sometimes you have a win that feels like it's one and a half wins, or you have a loss that's one and a half losses like the Rams, that feels like that's one and a half losses, that you're blowing them out, you're on the road, and then you lose in dramatic fashion.

Speaker 6: Yeah, this is where coaching and leadership comes into play, because you're right, this can have this can have like a lingering hangover type of effect right where you're like still sitting there a week later, going, damn, how did we lose that?

Speaker 6: Were we have twenty six to seven at half time? I mean we're absolutely rolling and all of a sudden Aj Brown takes the game over. We have two block field goals, one return for a touch, and we lose the game on that. Yeah, you have to like quickly try and find a way to turn the page. That's on. That's gonna be on Sean that's gonna be on Matthew Stafford, that's gonna be on Jared Verst, that's gonna be on the dudes to say, hey, look, we gotta flush this thing, as painful as it is, because we know we're a good football team. We had this team down. I mean we were absolutely stomping their backouts. Let me let them back in it. So leadership that's where it comes into play.

Speaker 2: I'm not sure I have a strong opinion on the Bears or Cowboys. When I'm watching that game and it's over, I don't know how good the Bears are and I don't know how good the Cowboys are. Yeah, do you have an assessment of these Do you know who these teams are going to be? This year.

Speaker 6: I think when it comes to the Cowboys, I think they are exactly who they look like, which is a team that will be able to put up some points when Dak is on, and if the offensive line stays healthy, they should be able to run it ad adequately. But defensively, they are just not a very stout, tough, physical, grinding, gritty defense that can stop the run. And they give up way too many explosives in the past game and I just don't see that changing. You can't really change that kind of thing midstream from a talent infusion standpoint, because where are you gonna get the players?

Speaker 6: You're right, But you know what, Treyvon doesn't look the same does he isn't like it's the same wheels. They're safeties in their corners don't communicate very well together. You saw a week ago against the Giants the number of coverage buss Yeah, you know where people are not playing in Unison. They don't rush the passer with consistency. Kenny Clark wasn't gonna all of a sudden make them a top five run stuffing defense. What are the Bear What did the Bears do? They ran the ball like eleven or twelve straight times on them on like this groeling like nine minute drive. I mean, that's the kind of stuff that should never happen at the NFL level. You can do that in college, you shouldn't do that in the NFL level. To anybody. People are just that. People are really challenging Dallas's manhood from a physicality standpoint, and they have no answers for it. And I think that's gonna be the case with Chicago. Chicago's trending the right way. Ben Johnson will get that place going and get and he will get Caleb going, and he will even on his performances. And we know Dennis Allen is a very good defensive coordinator. He's always been a good defensive coordinator. If I'm putting on if I'm betting on anybody of those two teams, I'm for sure putting my money on Chicago. There's no question about that.

This team is they believe now. They believe that they're well rounded enough football team to deal with anybody in the AFC. And I think you're gonna see that and for them to come out in three straight division games like that and win them all. They are just they are right now infused with so much confidence and so much like just willingness to kind of put in the work and do whatever Jim asked them to do. That's a very powerful combination. They're gonna be tough to deal with.
