00:00:37
Speaker 3: Welcome into Kentucky Sports Radio. It is Friday, March twenty seventh. I am Drew Franklin filling in for Matt Jones, and I am currently talking to you through my cell phone because, to the surprise of no one, we are having technical difficulties at Ksbar and Grill. My colleague here, Ryan Lemon, is efforting a connection. Oh he's giving me a thumbs up. Wait a minute, hear me.

00:00:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, I can hear you, guys, Drew. I think I think you can probably jump off the phone and jump off.

00:01:03
Speaker 3: Now, well, I'm gonna hang up and then move to a headset. That's a great way to start a show that I'm hosting. Talk to you in three seconds.

00:01:11

If not, I will just keep talking to this brick wall. Mario's here with us. We have Shannon in studio, and Billy our Sports is making his way from downtown to join us. Matt went to Washington, d C. To take in tonight's Sweet sixteen action. I think he's gonna go cheer for the Johnni's against Sat against Duke. So I'm filling in today on KSR. Ryan, welcome.

00:01:51
Speaker 5: You know, it's nothing like a little technical difficulty to get the morning start, to get the blood flown a little bit. Yeah, so, but you know, we just missed like what the first five seconds of the show.

00:01:59
Speaker 4: I love starting a radio show on my cell phone while looking like an idiot here at KSEPAR. But we are brought to you by a TJ.

00:02:04
Speaker 5: Smith.

00:02:06
Speaker 4: Why are you laughing? Uh? T J Smith, personal injury attorney.

00:02:09
Speaker 5: It is what we make un he'll make you pay.

00:02:12
Speaker 4: That's right. We also want to hear from you on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line eight five nine Toto two two eighty seven cats there. For a while, I thought the phone line was going to be my phone line. I won't give that number out, but I'm glad we're connected. We want to hear from you all today as we recap the Sweet sixteen Talk, all the latest news in uk Land, got a big women's game coming up tomorrow, all the fun Ryan Lemon, did you bring your a vision glass text machine?

00:02:35
Speaker 5: I did not.

00:02:35
Speaker 4: Okay, Well, we're just really on fire today, but it's good to see you guys. Mario, what are we under control? Consistency?

00:02:42
Speaker 6: Right?

00:02:44
Speaker 4: And his mic work Shannon, I'm trying, man, I'm trying. You know, he's plugging.

00:02:51
Speaker 5: That's not here.

00:02:51
Speaker 2: It's like the teachers away now. The kids are just you know, doing what they shouldn't be doing.

00:02:56
Speaker 5: They updated all the equipment, and I think they forgot to update the whitment here and at the Restaurant's what I'm thinking.

00:03:02
Speaker 2: Okay, so let's's blame it on somebody else.

00:03:04
Speaker 4: We're going to get through this together. This is amateur hour. This is embarrassing. We have two guests here. Where are you all from? Here? They're from Laxing. I apologize. We're a chaos bar and grill. For the first time in a long time, Mario and Ryan are having a conversation with themselves. Uh, but eventually I'm gonna talk to them. Shannon, help.

00:03:24
Speaker 5: You guys. Are right, you guys are going on. We're changing headsets.

00:03:28
Speaker 4: He's two. This is unblu. Matt would throw a chair through the window. You're watching this round now. I'm trying my best to keep this in order. All right, you guys were at the Reds game yesterday. I want to start there because that's how Matt Jones starts the show. You all went to Cincinnati, you left me. I had to stay back, getting a little too close to baby time at the Franklin House. I didn't want to get up there and get stuck in a parade. We have a lot going on with doctor's appointments and counting down to that. So I stayed back in the studio, but I listened yesterday Ryan looked or it sounded like you all had a heck of a time, and then stayed throughout the entire game yesterday.

00:03:59
Speaker 5: The best to explain it is SEC tournament in Nashville after a big Kentucky win. How the Big Blue Nation just floods Broadway up and down the street. That's where it's like around the ballpark in Cincinnati for opening Day. It is a national holiday in Cincinnati. Businesses closed, school's let out, and it's crazy. And that's you know, if you've been out in Nashville, which you've been another many times, that's that's the feeling you get. Mario didn't want to go to the game. He wanted to stay outside with all the party was going on.

00:04:26
Speaker 4: Of course, I've seen Mario in that area before. But the radio show just leave Mario out of it, right, I gotta talk to you all can figure that out later right on the radio over here. The radio show was awesome, Tom Brenneman, I thought was great. I mean, he was opened up about you know, his past, and then you all just setting the tone for an opening day. You could just hear the buzz behind you. It sounded like an absolute party at None in the morning. Tom Brenneman was awesome.

00:04:48
Speaker 5: He was very open, vulnerable, talking about how he had to rebound from his mistake that he made, and it was just it was really kind of inspiring to listen to him talk about it. You know, he was like I said, he's Matt was hitting with some tough questions and he answered every one of them, and I thought it was awesome, a great interview.

00:05:05
Speaker 4: I wanted to be there. Y'all were having a good time. Did he have his Bill Cunningham interaction? I was counting down for that. I know we didn't get it on air, but at any moment did they get to meet.

00:05:13
Speaker 5: After the our radio show is over? Of course, that's when Bill Cunningham shows up. So Matt went and talked to him and said, you're you're the guy that yells at me, and Bill came like, but he Matt has a picture of the two of them together. He got a chance to tweet it out yet, but he did have a picture.

00:05:27
Speaker 4: So no beef though.

00:05:28
Speaker 5: Put that behind him yeah, yeah.

00:05:30
Speaker 4: And you all stayed through the game, made a whole day of it.

00:05:33
Speaker 5: One of us, oh, fell asleep during the game.

00:05:36
Speaker 4: Fell asleep?

00:05:38
Speaker 7: One of us?

00:05:38
Speaker 6: Well?

00:05:39
Speaker 7: Who who fell asleep during the Matt?

00:05:41
Speaker 4: There was three of you, you, Matt and Mario, well Tall, Tall's wife and hell are you counting them? Okay?

00:05:47
Speaker 5: Who would you think fell asleep during the game?

00:05:48
Speaker 2: Mario?

00:05:50
Speaker 5: Mario not once, but twice fell asleep during the game.

00:05:55
Speaker 2: Mario the youngest one fell asleep?

00:05:57
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, second inning? Channon, Wow, so they're snoring.

00:06:02
Speaker 4: Snoring at Great American Ballpark. I do not believe that for one second.

00:06:06
Speaker 2: How many how many fireballs was he in? When he got to the second he had.

00:06:12
Speaker 5: A couple adult beverages. Okay, yeah, you know we had to get up really early or sitting up there, and we were right in the sun. But there's over forty thousand people in there. My man fell asleep twice during the game.

00:06:24
Speaker 4: Did he embrace Reds Baseball? Other than falling asleep into it? You were tweeting out pictures and things. Look like you're having a good time. You must have worn yourself out.

00:06:33
Speaker 5: Of course, we can't hear it.

00:06:34
Speaker 4: The Reds go on to uh to lose the game, right.

00:06:36
Speaker 5: You know, the great environment, great party, opening day, shan the game score.

00:06:41
Speaker 2: One run Mario's defense, there wasn't much offense to stay awake for. I think they got four hits the entire game. That couldn't be bothered to score a single run in the opening game, all that party in for that, I guess the Summer at Valley is already.

00:06:54
Speaker 5: Over four hits and three of them got well by one guy. They just could there. They're going trouble scoring runs this, but it's awesome. I mean, I'm not a RITZ fan, but I got sucked up in it just being there as part of the environment. It was really awesome.

00:07:05
Speaker 4: I saw a video online where someone's just walking through the crowd. It's no one related to ks R, I any think they're Kentucky people. And then you're in the video just walking by and you look perplexed at what you're seeing. You looked overwhelmed by everything. Have you seen that yet?

00:07:17
Speaker 5: No, I haven't seen it. But there was a guy that was wearing I think was a tablecloth as a diaper on the street corner at one point. So there it's it is. It's good people watching there's no doubt.

00:07:29
Speaker 4: It sounds like a great time. I did something unique yesterday and I had a blast until it went south. But yesterday morning I woke up and I have a friend Richie Richie donaldth shout out Richie donaldorth Shut. She's from Ireland. He texted me early said McCarthy's three forty five Ireland World Cup qualifier and I was like, oh, that sounds awesome.

00:07:50
Speaker 5: Three forty five am orm pm AFTERNOE.

00:07:53
Speaker 4: So I'm like, well, gotta do that now. I had something from four to five downtown, so I go to McCarthy's right before they start holding do the national anthem bit see everyone. It's an amazing crowd. I felt like I was in Ireland and I'm in downtown, like you know the little shop next door, I'm escaping the name. That's where she has the weed a bit. Yes, saw her on the sidewalk. She's fired up, crazy environment. I stay maybe five minutes into the match and then I have to walk across the street and uh and work for a little bit. Right as I leave, Ireland goes up two oh oh my, and they're playing at the Czech Republic. They're big time underdogs. I got them at plus three fifty, completely outnumbered, and they're up two oh after all. Now, while I'm across the street check scores, it's two to one. It's two to one most of the game. And when I finally am able to go back over there, yes, there's about ten minutes left and I'm thinking they're up to to one. I don't want to walk in and mess this up for that crowd. So I stand at the doorway and I'm like, you know what, I'm gonna do it, and I walk in. I even ask like three people, even the bartender, if you think I'm a jeez, I will turn around and leave. They're like, no, you're good, get in here, sit down. They scored it tight up in the eighty six minute. I wasn't there two minutes. Sad faces. We go to extra time to two no goals. There penalty kicks the crowd and McCarthy's is electric penalty kicks. World Cup qualifier qualifier. Ireland doesn't get there. Much as I said, I felt like I'm in Dublin. I'm the only one in there not from Ireland, but we're all wearing green. Ireland gets the first stop. I get a video they're going nuts. They're thinking they're gonna win, and then they lose, they give up, or they get blocked on their last two kicks to lose in the end after Ireland thought they had it. Now I say that because people came up to me, little teary eye and they're like, Drew, just to you understand, this is like a final four for us. So much heartbreaking there, and it's like I tried to escape my own heartbreak. I get lumped in. I embraced the the everything Irish, and then I get caught up and I get my heart broken. It was like their Wisconsin.

00:09:54
Speaker 8: Now.

00:09:54
Speaker 4: I'm just sports are so cruel. I had so fun in there with everyone at McCarthy's shout out to McCarthy's, but a heartbreaking loss for my friends and for me. I got engulfed in it and I woke up still heartbroken. So just a unique afternoon with that. While you were taking on the redskin.

00:10:07
Speaker 5: No otega Oway half court, heaved nothing.

00:10:12
Speaker 4: The fact that they went up two oh and everybody's happy, and then I personally kind of ruined it a little bit. And then they get up in PK's and then they think they're advancing and to losing the end. It was supposed to be like a distraction from basketball, and I was heartbreaking, heartbroken with all of them.

00:10:28
Speaker 5: Well that's the thing about you know, with sports, Sports is awesome.

00:10:32
Speaker 4: Well yesterday they were cruel. They were very cruel. Anyway, got that going for us. I'm gonna take a quick break here because Billy's on his way in. We gotta get this on the rails. We gotta get y'all focused now, just talking to a microphone that doesn't work, two different microphones. Are there other people on the other end of this listening to us?

00:10:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we're good.

00:10:49
Speaker 4: We're on the air, so we're good. Sometimes we weren't on the air, no kidding. This segment will not be in the Hall of Fame, but we want to hear from you Clark's Pumpshop phone on a five nine, two to eighty seven. We're gonna recap last night's Sweet sixteen fun more UK News got more Sweet sixteen tonight, and Kentucky women play a big game tomorrow baseball. We got a loaded show. Billy will be here any minute, and we'll be ready back. This is KSR. Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio. Drew Franklin, Ryan Lemon, Mario Maitland thought I saw Billy on his will in. Wasn't Billy, but he'll be here soon. Shannon in the studio. This is our first segment. Guys, we're just starting the show.

00:11:24
Speaker 5: Welcome In, Welcome In.

00:11:25
Speaker 4: Friday, March twenty seventh. True Franklin filling in for Matt Jones. Payday to day too, payday, congratulations, congratulations that it seems working this segment. Glad to have you, Glad to hear from you.

00:11:36
Speaker 5: So we had you know these our equipment got updated during March.

00:11:39
Speaker 4: Matt, I don't believe any technology got.

00:11:41
Speaker 5: I think they forgot to update our equipment here at the restaurant, so that's causing some of the issues. Gotcha connected.

00:11:49
Speaker 4: Neither of those things look like they've been updated this century.

00:11:52
Speaker 2: But you knew the other equipment had been updated.

00:11:54
Speaker 5: Yes, so thankfully I had it out in my car.

00:11:59
Speaker 4: No, thankfully, Matt, that's not here. You all need to be thinking me. I'm keeping a level head right now. True, this place would be upside down. I got a shout out my new friend here. He's wearing the state line code Denham hat. I got my own way that looks good in person.

00:12:11
Speaker 5: Nice, Yeah, it looks good.

00:12:12
Speaker 4: Shout out to the Denim uh Ry. Did you watch the Sweet sixteen last night? Or were you like Mario and just way too worn out from Reds baseball to keep up?

00:12:20
Speaker 5: I was watching Arkansas and Arizona and fell asleep. I got I made it to like second half, so early in the second half, maybe first TV timeout, it's twenty point game.

00:12:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, that was pretty much over this.

00:12:30
Speaker 7: I'm out.

00:12:31
Speaker 5: I fell asleep, so I had to look at smrning when I woke up. What the final score was still a twenty point game? When I didn't miss much.

00:12:37
Speaker 4: I was a little bummed last night. I was excited for that game, and it's the late win. I wasn't didn't care as much for the early ones. The first one is into being the best in the night's late was terrible. I can understand why you fell asleep. But Arkansas went down one O nine eighty eight to Arizona. I mean it was pretty much a route for this. It was. They gave up fifty four points at halftime. Yeah, I mean Acuff had a big game, but they had nothing else going. In fact, Charles Barkley at halftime I don't know if you see what he said on the set, I don't remember what he said. He just straight up said, Arkansas's offense sucks. Those were his exact words. He's like, it's a cuff running around and nothing else. It seemed if he wasn't scoring, they were turning it over, bricking a three, or they would have a highlight real dunk and try. If they won that game, they would have had the greatest dunk package they could have put out of all time. But Arkansas goes home. Maybe we can put those the all the conversations, the winning, the divorce, all that crap behind us that we had to go through the last couple weeks.

00:13:29
Speaker 5: I know, in halftime, Arizon, like you said, had like fifty four points and only hit like three three pointers. They were all just dunks, mid range jumpers, just scoring every which way possible. They looked incredible last night.

00:13:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, Arizona. I mean, I don't think I didn't have Arkansas won that game at all, but actually thought they would cover the eight and a half. It was an absolute blowout. And then at the end, you know, Arkansas, you might have been asleep at this point. They were unraveled a little bit, a lot of fowls, a lot of frustrated fouls, now got a technical, there was an eject, a lot of shoving around, a few cheap shots. So the wills absolutely fell off for the Razorbacks. And then after the game, did you see Col's comment, He kind of there's a debate if this is a jab or not. Shannon, you all played it on the pre show. Do you have it available or I can read it.

00:14:13
Speaker 2: If not, yeah, Billy, I can pull it up. But if you want to read it, go ahead.

00:14:16
Speaker 4: Yeah, he pretty much said. Cal said in passing, he's talking about the state of college basketball. I said, there's you can have absolutely no recruits and no clue who's coming back, and you have less money than a year ago. And maybe it wasn't a shot at Kentucky, but Kentucky fans listening felt it a little bit. I took it as more. You know, he can't be throwing jabs when you just lost by twenty whatever. But I did feel like it was a little bit of a subtweet to us, or a little bit of a nudge.

00:14:41
Speaker 5: See I'm the same way, caught a little straight. I heard it this morning on the pre show. Billy and Shann were talking about both of those guys. Kind of thought maybe, like Shan, you can answer for yourself. It wasn't necessarily directed at Kentucky. I felt like in a way, that was Cal's little acknowledgment. You know, I hear you over there chirping, guess what, you don't have any players, you don't have enough enough money from he did his last year. I think that was a definite reference to contuch See.

00:15:03
Speaker 2: I took it as Cal saying like, he's in the same boat. He's in the same situation. I think because we're in the same situation as he is, maybe we thought, you know, that sounds a little oddly familiar. You know, you don't have any players coming back next year, you don't have any for next year, you don't have recruits, you don't know who's going to be on the team, you don't have enough money. I think that maybe is that is it possible, Drew, that maybe we just have a little bit of paranoia to where everything that Cal says, what it's got to be talking about us?

00:15:27
Speaker 4: You know, well, we were looking for it. Yeah, he's got some good recruits for next year, So I don't think he can include himself from that. He's got another freshman guard.

00:15:35
Speaker 7: Shot.

00:15:35
Speaker 5: Why would you say you don't have any recruits no for next year rosters if you don't know who's coming back.

00:15:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean there's a debate. I don't feel like it went full jab though, just a little not just a little tip of the cap.

00:15:46
Speaker 5: I heard you there, I heard you chirping over there.

00:15:49
Speaker 4: So you didn't see any the other games. Purdue Texas ended up probably being last.

00:15:53
Speaker 5: I saw the end of it. Yeah, the end of the game. That was pretty awesome.

00:15:56
Speaker 4: Did you think there was a push off on the tip end. That's also been a big debate today.

00:16:00
Speaker 5: I think there's no doubt it was, But I don't know if you call it in that situation.

00:16:02
Speaker 4: Think you can.

00:16:02
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it was definitely foul. But would you call it?

00:16:05
Speaker 4: I think you you tell the Texas guy weight room, you just got pushed.

00:16:09
Speaker 5: Around for you sure game by a big monster guy. So I don't like Purdue. I never have like Purdue, and I was pulling for Texas to win it. You know, the high seed left and they almost had it. Man, it was right there for.

00:16:18
Speaker 4: Him, except my bracket not great. I know you're at one point where in like the ninety.

00:16:22
Speaker 5: Nineth Peah, but I had Houston winning at all.

00:16:24
Speaker 4: Okay, that's that's gonna be a hit. Mine isn't gonna win any contests. But I was big on Texas making a run, and I just wanted to win one more game last night, even bet the money line. So that ended up being the best game. They played him well. People are also critical of Sean Miller because they have that star seven footer whose name I won't try to pronounce. But he pulled him out with eleven seconds left, and then you end up losing on that tip end.

00:16:44
Speaker 5: But why would you pull him out? You need him down there for the room protector defense, pilp some space down there exactly.

00:16:49
Speaker 4: I think old Sean Miller would have had some regrets there. Non sweet sixteens for him without a final four, so he likes to get close, but hadn't gotten over the ump just yet got close last night.

00:16:59
Speaker 5: He plays in all those golf camels, but they only played fourteen holes. They never played the final four.

00:17:06
Speaker 4: You love that one. She stayed a holiday and Express last night Press last night, So Iowa, Nebraska, Everybody's in love with Iowa's coach Ben McCollum. He comes from like Division two, completely off the radar.

00:17:16
Speaker 5: He was the Hampton coach right that the player picked up and belly bear hugged at one one year and they won beat somebody. Yeah.

00:17:22
Speaker 4: It's his second year as a Division one coach and he has Iowa in the Elite eight as far as they've ever been. I like, when they got rid of Frand McCaffrey last year, who had been there forever, they were like, be careful what you wish for. Fran was the best, and then the very next season they've gone farther than he ever took him.

00:17:38
Speaker 5: I thought Nebraska was kind of fool's gold anyway, but I didn't really believe in Iowa. E that either one of those teams I don't think are very good.

00:17:45
Speaker 4: Did you see the gigantic Florida fan that's gone viral, the dude who's definitely not on steroids and where's a jersey to games?

00:17:51
Speaker 5: I'm like, I saw him.

00:17:52
Speaker 4: Well, he's been like a March Madness sensation. I think he was even there last year. I mean, he's he's just huge. I mean that that is not a natural look, sir, but he more Lord of gear last year and this year, but he wore Nebraska jersey.

00:18:03
Speaker 5: He did last night? Is the Nebraska complete flip. Couldn't believe it.

00:18:06
Speaker 4: And if I were Iowa basketball, I'd walk up and say, I just sent you home again. What jersey you got next? Put that one on? Will beat that one too.

00:18:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm gonna find another jersey to wear Sunday night, Saturday night for the Lea Day game.

00:18:17
Speaker 4: I don't know how he got a jersey on it over his arms. If he saw him, he looks like the Hulk. But I thought that was an interesting plot twist. I can't imagine Kentucky losing and I just go to the next city and buy the jersey of the team playing the one that knocked me out of the tournament.

00:18:29
Speaker 5: So we all worked root for Patino tonight. Is that the kids? That's what we're doing.

00:18:32
Speaker 4: Oh, Patino's winning tonight. We'll get to that in our predictions. I'm all over Saint John's money line. I also have to give a shout out on Iowa Nebraska to go Big Blue ninety four. It's one of our chs board posters. He wrote on November twenty fourth. Look out for Ben McCollum. He's gonna be the next Signetti in college basketball.

00:18:51
Speaker 5: Wow.

00:18:52
Speaker 4: I mean they had barely played a few games. Wow, he called a shot, so I feel like that was worth a shot out.

00:18:56
Speaker 5: No kidding.

00:18:57
Speaker 4: I was kind of going viral on our board last night, getting pats on the back as he should to write that in November. But I mean, that's looking like a hot name. I don't know that he would leave Iowa having just got there, but college basketball is in love with Ben McCollum right now. He's not the hurly level of getting in your face and toughness, but in interviews with his players, they like to say he's the negative one in the assistant coaches come in and save me. So he's got some I don't know if he's just a fierce coach that I think college basketball has falling in love with that he's taking Iyoa as far.

00:19:27
Speaker 5: That's pretty good foresight to predict it way back in November that Iowa Iowa basketball is gonna make a run and he's gonna behind it.

00:19:33
Speaker 4: And then in the game that almost put me to sleep. Did anyone keep up with Houston Illinois? When I saw it was twenty four to Hello, Billy Relais, Welcome to the party. Oh, here we go more technical difficulties. When I saw it was twenty four to twenty two at halftime, I thought, I have no interest in watching that college basketball game. Illinois ends up pulling away win in by ten. Houston tried to make a little run but not enough in the end, and our guy Orlando is moving on.

00:19:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, try big Z still in Illinois, all their only scuress. I was like four to two at the first TV timeout, like, oh boy, what's going on over there on that one?

00:20:05
Speaker 4: Not a lot to take away from that game except Illinois and Brad Underwood. I mean, Kentucky knocked him out last year. But with all their visages and all the IX and the ICs on their team, Uh, I think that's a European They have like five players whose last names into IC. Uh. They've got a little bit of a little bit of a couple of year run going and it's not stopping. Personally, I'm happy for Orlando. I know everybody's got their own opinions of the past regime and everybody going their separate ways, but but I'm rooting for him.

00:20:31
Speaker 5: Big Z's older, well, not a runner, but bigger twin brother, Thomas Love. He's a heck of a player. He is the dude can play.

00:20:38
Speaker 4: And they beat Houston in Houston.

00:20:39
Speaker 5: It's that's It's true. It was the Houston welcome Billy.

00:20:42
Speaker 4: Hey, guys, cheer the first segment I did and how did I do?

00:20:46
Speaker 7: GM? Billy is gonna fall on the sword here.

00:20:47
Speaker 9: We've been updating the equipment, yeah, Ryan has said, and this is the first time we've used the bar equipment.

00:20:52
Speaker 5: So we got we got connected when I first started, and then it timed out and couldn't get reconnected, and.

00:20:57
Speaker 7: Then Drew started it on the phone.

00:20:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, all that. How did I? I try to keep my cour.

00:21:01
Speaker 7: You did great, You did great.

00:21:02
Speaker 9: And now we're off and running, and you know, we will just forget that first segment. That Illinois game was unwatchable. I mean, what was it, twenty six twenty two at halftime ten Arkansas Arizona was like fifty six forty eight. It was just completely different games. Did you guys talk about Nebraska having four guys on the court.

00:21:19
Speaker 4: No, left that out, but I have had it.

00:21:21
Speaker 9: I mean, there's less than a minute left. I can understand football. You got eleven guys, out there and there's a big huddle.

00:21:27
Speaker 7: Everybody comes out.

00:21:28
Speaker 9: But five guys, four guys on the court.

00:21:31
Speaker 5: And then, like Fred Hoiberg, Berg tried to like blame the officials for not making a call, Like he said, you call it when there's six guys on the floor. Why can't you call it when there's only four guys on the court. That's on you, that's on your coaching staff. You don't have your five guys on the floor.

00:21:44
Speaker 9: I mean, look, great accomplishment to make the Sweet sixteen for Nebraska, But that's something that lingers, is it not like a fan base remembers that you only had four guys on the court when that happened, so.

00:21:53
Speaker 5: That it was like a football team having just ten guys and you're playing Florida, leaving somebody wide open for a touchdown.

00:21:57
Speaker 7: That was brutal.

00:21:58
Speaker 9: And then it was an obvious hook and hold on that final play for Texas, Like, I don't know if you call it on that last play, but I thought it was I thought.

00:22:04
Speaker 7: It was there.

00:22:05
Speaker 4: I think the guy just got bullied for a rebound and you can't call anything in that moment. I like that you all watch, you know, some fans act like the NCAA tournament doesn't exist when Kentucky is out, and I've been that guy before, but this year, I was pretty excited to watch the games last night. Decided to watch the games tonight and the rest of the weekend. I guess maybe I'm at a point where the tournament can't hurt me anymore. You know, the Saint Peter's in Oakland years, you couldn't pay me to watch March Madness after Kentucky was out, But it seems you all are like me, been excited and watched a lot of basketball and stayed asway as long as you could.

00:22:34
Speaker 9: Yeah, Kentucky had their moment right, they had the win versus Santa Clara, So that I think allowed me to watch the rest of the tournament because I'm just kind of the same way. I get bummed out if Kentucky loses early, but I didn't have to go to the Reds game and watch zero run.

00:22:47
Speaker 5: Well, we'll have all the games on here at cas Bar today and you can come watch the game. So I think they had a good crowd last night watching the game. So you know, even though we're not in it, and still enjoy watching the games and not be anxious or excited. You can watch Patino win. Then I beat Duke on our True again. Duke right, that's right.

00:23:01
Speaker 4: KSR will be right back live from KOs Bar and Grill. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ.

00:23:08
Speaker 9: He'll make them pay Now.

00:23:10
Speaker 2: More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.

00:23:15
Speaker 4: Here's not Matt Jones. I am Drew Franklin filling in for Matt. He is in Washington, d C. To watch some of the NCAA tournaments night.

00:23:22
Speaker 5: He's supposed to fly out, I guess today, But you know, the TSA lines are big and long, so I kind of hope he has a good travel.

00:23:28
Speaker 4: Man I get there. If I had a flight right now, I wouldn't bother. I just canceled the trip. Try another time. That looks like an absolute nightmare going on. But we hope he gets there safely enjoys the games. He said he's wearing a Saint John shirt.

00:23:38
Speaker 5: He's all in on Saint John's hoodie, Saint John's hat, and.

00:23:41
Speaker 2: He's a credentialed How does that work? I know you can't wear like team colors, team like shirts on press row, So.

00:23:49
Speaker 7: I did, Yeah, you did.

00:23:50
Speaker 2: Are they more relaxed on that?

00:23:52
Speaker 7: Now?

00:23:52
Speaker 4: I'm a grown man. I don't need somebody tell me what to wear.

00:23:54
Speaker 2: That's not I thought they like enforce that. They don't enforce that anymore.

00:23:57
Speaker 5: They don't enforce it. It's just kind of a cardinal rule amongst journalists. You're not supposed to wear the colors of the team you're covering.

00:24:05
Speaker 4: I don't even know where the journalism building is, so I'm gonna wear whatever I want to wear. But good luck to Matt. I hope he has fun tonight. We're missing him today.

00:24:11
Speaker 10: Uh.

00:24:11
Speaker 4: This segment, guys, is brought to us by the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center. Guys, it's that time of the year. Everyone checks their bracket and Ryan takes his shirt off. 00:24:51
Speaker 5: I love, I love, I love.

00:24:52
Speaker 4: We've got some fans that have infiltrated enemy cities. He said he was on his way to Knoxville today and he heard that first segment. Was like, you know what I got?

00:25:00
Speaker 5: That's right Ray Radio there.

00:25:01
Speaker 4: Yeah, I got to see this in person. Well, I'm happy. Shannon confirmed during the break that he took that first segment and he drove and he threw it into the Ohio River and will never be heard from again. So thank you.

00:25:10
Speaker 2: We're going to play it on Christmas Eve. You know that's the best of show.

00:25:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, let's let's not But let's go with the phone lines real quick. I hear we have some people on there.

00:25:18
Speaker 2: Uh, you want to talk to Bob and Jamestown first or do you want to save him for later?

00:25:22
Speaker 4: Listen, I'm I'm a little different than mat. I absolutely want to hear from Bob Jamestown that's who. But that's who I hoped you'd say.

00:25:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Bob, go ahead, Hi.

00:25:29
Speaker 10: Bob, what do you what you say? It looks like the wheels came out of the big red machine yesterday. And then they had that I guess a little uh the step there at the end of the game they shut down the banks please just got a little too rowdy fans just I guess they couldn't handle that loss. Anyway, that Arkansas Arizona game. I thought maybe Cole would give a better show that But anyway, my bracket's still good with Arizona going on in the National Championship, so we'll see what happens. And then we got a couple of Derby prep prices this weekend. We've got Arkansas Derby and Florida Derby. A friend of mine got, you know, to get a horse into Kentucky Derby, you gotta have points and I got a friend's got one and it's called Steel. So we're hoping Steele gets in there and get another Derby race.

00:26:27
Speaker 4: Go steal.

00:26:28
Speaker 5: Guys.

00:26:29
Speaker 4: Well, who's in your final four with Arizona. Let's call out your break. You can't just flex you out Arizona.

00:26:32
Speaker 10: What are your other three Connecticut?

00:26:36
Speaker 4: Okay, that's my title game. I Gotyon Arizona final game as well. All right, Bob, we're very like mine. It's almost like we're the same person. Thanks for calling.

00:26:43
Speaker 5: I don't know if you want to brag on that or I.

00:26:45
Speaker 4: Got don't have one single bad thing to say about Bob. I'm still jealous. I didn't get to go on their trip to hear about aliens in Ohio.

00:26:52
Speaker 7: Oh that was bizarre.

00:26:53
Speaker 9: But you know, I'm hoping Steele has a better performance than Ksr's horse. Was it last year when Simply Joking came in dead last and it's heat?

00:27:00
Speaker 5: I think I just finished.

00:27:02
Speaker 2: I forgot we're part owner of that horse.

00:27:03
Speaker 4: Come on, guys, don't hate. It's progress. We just got started. We're gonna take a step forward. This year wasn't our best run at that last year at Churchill, but all right, we'll get back.

00:27:12
Speaker 5: I checked up on simply Joking. He was smoking a ciguard, drinking a beer out in the pasture, just chilling out.

00:27:17
Speaker 4: That sounds like good living, good for him. Who's up next, Sha, Let's go to Joe. What's up?

00:27:21
Speaker 6: Joe?

00:27:23
Speaker 8: Thank you?

00:27:24
Speaker 1: Drew?

00:27:24
Speaker 8: Uh Drew I'm going to an Irish Mars to night and little we'll call plan because and I'll drink one for you and part the Irish. I'm Irish descend and I feel I felt the pain when you were just talking about the big loss to the Czech Republic. So next year, Drew, my advice to you, you're not a Jings. You've cut to o artel Gate for the balls eight game the Red Lot. I'll bring some holy water. We'll get you, we'll baptize you and get that Jings out of you. And and I guarantee you'll be an irishman for life. Ever we take care of you in the Red Lot. Now here's my big point, Drew. Now I mean necessarily and I'm not I'm not making this up. Will Seide said one thing that I really took to heart. I'm seventy three years old. I'm a long time Kentucky football fan. He said that he's going to put his best players on special teams. Drew, I'd started to crying. I said, this gentleman might have an idea how to win games in the SEC, especially when you play the schedule we go against. If you've got decent special teams, and you get a few breaks on offensive defense along the way, you might have a chance to win six games next year. Now here's my big point about Mark Stewkes. If he'd have took Special Teams seriously last year, he might have beat Texas. But no, he had to punt the ball twice to that all American punt returner. You know what his response was. But by not kicking the ball out of bounds or putting the ball all bounds, I don't think my punter knows how to punt an all of bounds now, Drew Thats is one reason why Mark ain't here no more. When you make comments like that and go Will Steine And I'm sincere about that Special Teams. If he takes me serious and puts his best seat best players on there, we got a chance for six victories. Thanks a lot, goodbye, Thanks.

00:29:08
Speaker 4: Joe, appreciate the call. Look forward to seeing the red lot. Look forward to get baptized by the Irish, even though I don't need it. I'll happily have a pint of guinness with you soon. Uh, Special Teams, we didn't love the way they were going at the end of the Mark Stoops era. I like that will Stein also says open to some Australian punting. If we're gonna keep doing that, go back to that. Well, another thing will Stein's doing that's unique that I like, and it can sometimes be coaching speak, but he's literally not doing a depth chart and it's not like the motivation thing, like they're just jumbling. You could have a walk on next to a future NFL player and they're truly seeing who can climb the depth charter this early in the spring.

00:29:42
Speaker 5: Who's your best players? Man, put them on the on the field, That's what he's got to do. So I just like his innovative thinking. You know, it's kind of modern football for coming back to life here and at the UK.

00:29:50
Speaker 4: That and uh, I don't know if you saw they've they've been putting out these highlight clips. We love those this time a year, like just show me your best plays, eat them up. Brought coffin a little local making some big plays. Had a big catch from Menshi yesterday on the latest highlight reels. So you know, we know the Kaufmans. We like the local kid who came from Louisville, so good to see him making plays over.

00:30:07
Speaker 5: Won a state championship at Sayer. It's right, spent last season, spent last season at Louisville, actually played against Kentucky and the Kentucky Louisville game came back home. He's a guy that before he leaves here to come me on the field, There's no doubt about absolutely.

00:30:19
Speaker 4: I love seeing him making the big catch yesterday on the clip. They put out a.

00:30:22
Speaker 9: Lot of important moments in the Stoops era when it comes to special teams. I think of a fake punt Missouri ran that kind of derailed the entire season. Yeah, I think it's a big kicks by Austin McGinnis that completely changed the way that you looked at Stoops. So I'd like the the sentiment of having starters on special teams.

00:30:36
Speaker 7: To Joe's point, for just a second.

00:30:38
Speaker 9: When I was a kid, I used to go to Tampa Bay Bucks games, and I think they lost the first five games I went to. And at that point you can't help but think that you have an involvement of the game. Right, So people say, oh, I've been to these games and they always lose. I mean, you guys ever had that feeling You just keep going and then you keep losing.

00:30:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's called them. The Titans fan have that feeling all the time.

00:30:58
Speaker 5: Existence our record here a watch part it. Kas bar is not the greatest either, although you finally changed that on the Otakatuga away than Claric game.

00:31:05
Speaker 4: That was amazing that having everyone here for the bar for that one. The second one not so well, Billy. You mentioned the Bucks shout out NFL Cover zero. We've still been rolling out interviews from San Francisco because we still can't believe we were there, Billy, and I put out a new one earlier this week. You know, we do like ten minutes just off the cuff to set up the interview, but you know I have to say the number out out, Billy. But the next morning I came in, You're like, did do you want to know how many people listen to just us off the cuff with no plan there for ten to fifteen minutes. And I was quite alarmed by that number. So thank you for Cover zero listeners. And that's out right now. We got Denzel Award was the most recent one, right.

00:31:39
Speaker 9: Yes, and then we will have Eric Kendricks next week. We'll do this every week till the draft. I'm shocked how many of you listen, so a big thank you to everybody that does. And we hit the hard hitting stuff in these last two episodes. I think we talked about Donna Kelsey's home renovations.

00:31:51
Speaker 4: And she added some sconces to the bathroom. Well, I think we have a blacktop coming in next week. We'll updreat you that when we have Dereic Kendricks show. But I just wanted to think our cover zero listeners there.

00:32:01
Speaker 5: Yeah, the draft is about three weeks. I mean it's two weeks. It's coming up, coming up. We'll have a little bit of that too, But thanks again forbodes tuned into that. It's kind of our quiet period, but we're still rolling out a few before we get into it.

00:32:11
Speaker 9: He doesn't have a super Bowl hat on, and maybe the first time I've.

00:32:13
Speaker 4: Seen we got the dad head. Thought the same of you. You're rocking the dad hat. Yeah, a lot of dad energy around me. Last night I installed a car seat get out. This morning, I'm driving on the way over here and I see it and I'm like, there's a car seat in my back seat. That's there. Well, it's all it's all getting very real.

00:32:30
Speaker 5: In the Franklin House, Welcome to fatherhood, young Drew frankly, I hope.

00:32:33
Speaker 4: That's in there good. I was giving a little shake. We might need to tighten that thing up. Yeah, it's getting really to.

00:32:37
Speaker 5: Have an engineering degree. I think to put those things in correctly, don't you well?

00:32:40
Speaker 4: I have you tube. It was pretty good. There's a nice lady on there showing me how to do it.

00:32:43
Speaker 7: You got a crib or a high chair?

00:32:45
Speaker 4: I got it all I got. I think you feel like Noah's ark. I got two of everything. It was piled up. But it's exciting times around here. It's also exciting times around Kentucky basketball. We're not I don't want to. I'm not saying like commitment watch. But things went well with Mason Williams, who just visited Williams Kid.

00:33:00
Speaker 6: Uh.

00:33:00
Speaker 4: He visited campus the last two days, ended up yesterday. He's ranked outside the top one hundred, but his shooting numbers are incredible. It's a little small sixty two, one sixty, but it looks like things are going well in Kentucky recruiting him. I know there's people have been up in arms about how we're you know, he's outside the top one hundred, but this is a this is a project here. He's not gonna hand him the keys to the car next season, but that could be we could finally have a recruit uh in Mark Pope's class coming up. As that visit wrapped up yesterday, we'll see. I'm not I don't have any scoop, but I just Jack and everyone reported that the visit went well, and we're kind of on high alert in case that does happen soon.

00:33:35
Speaker 5: My takeaway is any recruit is better than zero recruits exactly. And Pope likes to play a lot of players, needs a little bench. This guy, if this guy can come in and be a good bench player, by all means, bring him in.

00:33:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, we can't say we can't complain about point guard depth, and then when Pope goes out and recruits someone to be a depth piece, I don't think that's true. So'd be exciting to get just a body in there. He did commit to his dad, Mo Williams as the coach at Jackson State Calves legend Moe Williams uh decommitted from them and now considering Kentucky. I'm for it. I hope it happens. You know, It's not like I said outside one hundred. It's not something you know we're gonna have a parade for, but it's you gotta have these guys. How many times do we see a junior or senior in college basketball and their three star recruit or whatever and they just took time to develop. That's what he'll be and I think he can do it.

00:34:21
Speaker 5: So, like I said, that, look gonna be a little awkward at the Easter brunch table. Dad's sitting across the table and you just committed to Dad, And like, Dad, I don't want to play for you want to play for somebody else. Conna be a little awkward for him.

00:34:31
Speaker 4: Listen if it were me. Moe Williams is very close to Lebron James. I mean he played in an All Star Game and won a championship because of Lebron. I'm like, hey, Mo, you want to come on over your job. You wanna bring Lebron? You wanna get us some juice back going around here. I don't think that's the plan, but Mason Williams is a name to watch there.

00:34:47
Speaker 5: Now, what about the story that was talking about Jamal Crawford They talking to him or is that?

00:34:52
Speaker 4: I would love that? And I it seems unlikely to meet the Jamal Crawford to do that. He just started on NBA on NBC the New Coverage. He's a Seattle guy, lives in Seattle. He's coaching his son's high school team out there. His son's like class of twenty twenty nine. It's definitely being rumored. And there's a photo of Pope talking to Jamal Crawford. I think it was the Peach jam last year. I would love it. I just I think I would be surprised if Jamal Crawford would do that. I'm just trying to put myself in his shoes. Dude made a hundred million dollars. He's a West Coast guy and just got hired to sit next to Grant Hill on NBA on NBC. To leave all that to go recruit for Kentucky, I don't know. I don't know if you'd do that, but it would be awesome to add Jamal Crawford to the to the stats.

00:35:31
Speaker 7: Well the internet sleuths.

00:35:32
Speaker 9: Throughout yesterday, it was like he liked an Instagram comment that said, Hey, maybe come be an assistant at Kentucky. So, I mean we're in full offseason now as we try to pick apart the pieces here and there. Doesn't his son play with Tyron Stokes.

00:35:45
Speaker 4: Like, yeah, he's part of it. Yeah, he's an assistant coach at that re near high school. Oh yeah, yeah, there's the Tyron Stokes connection. To listen, I'm not trying to poopoo the idea here. It would be awesome to have Jamal Crawford. If you watch his YouTube videos, he looks like the greatest basketball player of all time. He won six Man of the Year like every single year. It's that connection. We want to get back to the NBA. Everyone knows Jamal Crawford. I think that'd be huge if he's willing to do it. I don't even know how serious they're considering it, but the internet wants it pretty bad. If you read anything in the last twenty four hours.

00:36:12
Speaker 5: It definitely checks all the boxes. And if that is a way you can do a package deal with him and Stokes, well we'll have our own parade in downtown then.

00:36:21
Speaker 4: And before we go to the break. You all touched on this yesterday. I don't remember how much you got into it. But Kentucky hired a dorm that's the director of roster management. I'm calling it the dorm the dorm. Yeah, okay, Brown made that higher the dorm. Yeah, you and Matt were at Cincinnati when it came out. Did you all do you get into the weeds of with the.

00:36:36
Speaker 5: Heat and just just mentioned it. You know the Higher's officials when we talked about a couple weeks ago, Betai, the Mande official, ands I saw. I asked him and said, is this is close? And marked gonna get to Connie a GM, Connie m dorm.

00:36:47
Speaker 4: I still, I mean Pope said there's still front office moves ahead. I think Keingan Brown might be acting as a GM right now as they still fill that role. But he's he's more analytical, spreadsheet, that kind of guy. He was a big part in Jackson Robbins development at BYU. He believed in him and kind of convinced Pope on that Ali Khalifa who almost followed Pope from BYU end up at Louisville. I mean, that was a guy I don't think anyone thought Holly of in recruiting, and Keegan Brown saw something and got that going. So he was a big part of Pope's offense when it was working at BYU, and also kind of helped build the Pope's first Kentucky class, even though he didn't end up with the job here. So I like the hire. I don't know who else we could get for our dorm, Billy, I'm calling the dorm. Just get used to it. But I hope there's still a GM move with some NBA ties ahead.

00:37:29
Speaker 9: I wonder what the hesn'ty Hesit ten c is of calling him a GM. I don't know if it's what there is there, but this is the right time to announce that higher right, This is when you need somebody to.

00:37:40
Speaker 7: Help Mark at the closing table.

00:37:42
Speaker 9: If you believe the reporting from the great website of Kentucky Sports Radio dot com, I do it's you know something that Mark Pope maybe isn't the best at. So this is I think it's unfair to ask these high level head coaches to be very good gms at the same time, even though recruiting is a big aspect of it, it's just a different landscape right now.

00:37:59
Speaker 7: So I'm hoping and positive that he can bring in the right guys.

00:38:01
Speaker 4: Yeah, I like the move. Let's get to work, get this class going. We want to hear from you all in the Clark's Pumpet Shop Full line A five nine to two two eighty seven. Drew Franklin here with Ryan Lemon, Billy Rutlige and Shannon's in the studio. We'll be right back. This is KSR. Welcome back to KSR. 00:38:57
Speaker 2: Mind knuckleheads. Matt, something next, what's up, Matt?

00:39:00
Speaker 4: Hello, Matt.

00:39:03
Speaker 6: Hey, guys, watched the Sweet sixteen last night. It's bittersweet watching Iowa win. All of my in laws are Iowa fans, so I'm hearing it. But it seems like Iowa in basketball and football play a better version of what Kentucky has been playing. And that's all I got.

00:39:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's an unfortunate truth right now. I think there's a lot of states that are doing a little better than us right now. But that's okay. We're gonna be back. We're not gonna have any negative energy on the show. I said this yesterday on another show. I want to have fun. We've done a lot of complaining. If you all see me taking a turn towards negative town, just yell at me. We'll get where we need to be. But we're gonna it's Friday. We're gonna have fun. But yes, Iowa and Iowa State are still in the tournament.

00:39:53
Speaker 5: I have to admit, you know, the guy up there at University of Iowa gave us a tour of their facilities kind of got his you know, the training room, locking room, on the court, shoot shots, some shots on the court. I kind of have become a little bit of an Iowa fan because of that. I got to pick somebody last night. I'm not gonna pick Nebraska. I'm gonna bick Iowa. So I'm kind of happy they won last night for him.

00:40:15
Speaker 7: I kind of like their coach.

00:40:16
Speaker 4: Have you mentioned him, Yeah, we talked about a little bit and then share your thoughts.

00:40:20
Speaker 9: Well, his hair is wonderful, you know, holding on to what he's got, laft what's there? Yeah, and you know he just seems like a fiery guy. He broke the whiteboard and the marker yesterday. The Iowa guys was talking about that. I love that move. I think Mark Pope tried that once or twice. If will Stein's offense looks like Iowa football, we got problems. So hopefully that's behind.

00:40:40
Speaker 5: That's true.

00:40:41
Speaker 4: HOPEFU were the opposite of Mark Stoops.

00:40:42
Speaker 9: Baul doesn't look anything like or Mark stootsball did look like Iowa in the past.

00:40:46
Speaker 7: Hopefully we've moved on from that.

00:40:47
Speaker 4: Shan, who's next, Let's go to Mark.

00:40:50
Speaker 3: Hello, Mark, I think what's going on? Guys?

00:40:54
Speaker 4: A great radiar show was going.

00:40:56
Speaker 11: On most definitely is today. They got a question for you, Fallow. Now that Arkansas has lost, can we stop this obsession with all things Cal and Arkansas. I had some girl man yesterday celebrating like it was April twenty twelve. I mean, it was unbelievable. It's kind of like, uh, you know, we're looking at the speck of dust in Arkansas's eye and ignoring the boulderness in our eye. I mean, everybody's gone their separate ways. I think, well, I think hopefully it will turn out best for us since on the long run. But it's just like, you know, this obsession is unbelievable. Kyle's got money down there, He's got He's got the best point guard in the country coming in for him next year, with highly more highly ranked than a Cuffs. I mean, these guys, I mean, why are we worried about it? We don't even have recruits right now.

00:41:45
Speaker 4: I completely agree Sky was excited Arizona once we could put that behind us. I did think it was funny the announcers were like, Cal got him to back to back sweet sixteen's. I was thinking they just had back to back Elite eight's before they hired him. They've gone like Elite eight, Elite eight sweets Sxen. Then they missed it in the Sweet sixteen Sweet sixteen, So the way they were celebrating getting back to the Sweet sixteen, I'm like, did you all forget Muscleman? Had you knocking on the final flour back to back years. So there's been a lot of rewriting history in these debates lately. But uh, we'll put that Calipari conversation to Ben. We got a preview tonight's games. Kentucky women play tomorrow is KSR. We'll be right back after this break
