FT Postgame Reax: Blue Jays Rock Dodgers 11-4 in G1 + G2 Preview

Speaker 1: Ft Live postgame show presented by the brand new Fox one app, which is where you might have been watching the World Series. Well that was fun if you're Canadian. The Blue Jays take down the Dodgers, and I mean, you had it all Scotty Brown Aircraft's Todd father, Todd Frazier. You're a Blue Jays fan. You've waited for World Series moments since nineteen ninety three. There are many that aren't even alive last time they were in there. They get the whole song and dance before this thing starts. They're down to nothing. They're the best comeback team in baseball, and they do just that with an explosive sixth inning. They score nine runs and by the end of the game they're trolling show. Heyo, Tani, that's good that we need you. We would not like your services. We can win without you, and they did it with the utmost respect. If you want the truth, we don't need you. I meant, and that one probably hurts a little.

Speaker 2: Bit more than you know, saying a few vulgarities or anything out there because they put on his spank in there. Eleven to four and nine run inning. I mean, I gotta be honest with you, I did not see that coming. They chipped away, and I gotta be honest that the guy that comes on mind is Alejandro Kirk. This guy, I don't know how many pitches he fouled off, but he had some really keya bats got the single down the line, and then the wheels started turning. After that, it just seemed like everything Blake snelled through, everything was up in the zone, could not get that called for a strike, and he threw a lot of pitches and I think for both sides, the pitch count went up, and next thing he knew, the Blue Jays were the first one to pounce on him and make that a huge, huge inning.

Speaker 3: For a team that swings a lot. They didn't put a lot of balls in play right away. They made that pitch count come up, go up, Like you said, but there's no I mean, there's no like I get it. Alejandro Kirk. You know he drew that walk early in the game, that that like that drew that first inning out, which kind of looked like it kind of tired snell out a little bit, but he kind of bounced back, and then that sixth inning he got through the fifth and then that sixth inning, they said, now we've seen enough, Like we've seen enough, we're gonna we're gonna kick you out of the game, and they did, and really it was bam bam, bam bam. Barger just a pinch hit grand slam, the first ever pinch hit grand slam put this game a bed. And that's when the true Canadians came out, don't you know, And they just said, you know, it's it's a great time for us to just take it out on on show Halo Tani because he didn't come up on that flight that we thought it was gonna be him, but it wasn't. And now he's just gonna be down oh one in the first game of the World Series and this is really nice for us.

Speaker 1: And instead they use that money on Bladdie Junior and it's working out for him this postseason. But it's not just Flatty Junior. I do still feel like many casual fans need to get introduced to the rest of the group. Barger great example, and they told the story about how he got super swoll over COVID and added like seventy five pounds of muscle and now he's bam bam, you guys mentioned Kirk, who I think is one of the most underrated catchers in the sport. He's great defensively, he's a pitch framing whiz. I think he's a great game caller. And he's a pesky hitter. Yeah, the eight pitch opposite fields high off the right field wall knock that was only a single. That's double for ninety eight percent of the league. Who cares. He knows his body and he stays at first. And then Varshow hits the first pitch to run over four injer twenty three feet. Dalton Varshow is actually making that Diamondbacks Blue Jays trade from years back that involved a few others that were successful on the Arizona side look pretty decent right now. Bar Show is an elite center fielder. He's got great pop. He's got three home runs in the postseason. And and my personal favorite plodfather is Ernie Clement. Ernie Clement is a hits machine now. He was a Gold Club Finals last year. He's a good base runner, he's a good baseball player, as John Schneider likes to say, good defender. But the two regular seasons here that he got pretty normal playing time were still a bit under league average in terms of ops plus at one hundred he was in the mid nineties. I mean, this dude's like hitting five hundred in the playoffs with slug He's incredible. And think about it, bases loaded, no outs, they get snell out of the game, you still got to capitalize. And he's the one that sets the tone, gets the knock that's the go ahead, and then it starts the doozy in the inning for nine runs.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's a guy that when you look on his baseball card, if you look, if you look who he is, his size of stature, you're not blown away by it, you know what I mean. But this guy is an absolute beast of a baseball player. He fouls the balls off. He got back to back sliders there, and he did something with it. The first one he saw didn't really like. The second one came up with a big line drive up the middle. He finds a way with two strikes to put the bat on the ball stay on it, and I think that's his biggest asset. He battles the whole time and he's focused on finding a way to get the barrel to the ball. And these guys are not going to blow you away with their big names. They're just going to blow you away by battling, seeing more pitches, fouling pitches off, and next thing you know, boom, an easy single to right field, gets the wheels turning a little bit, a walk, a hit by pitch, and all of a sudden, here we go a new pitch and change. It doesn't matter. This team is clicking on all cylinders. It doesn't matter who they're playing right now. And you know, you think you savage. How he did? He didn't, He didn't have his best game, but guess what, he only gave up two runs out of the four innings too as well. He'll be just fine as they move forward. But again, what a performance. And they got these guys at the bottom lineup that are absolutely doing what they're supposed to do, finding a way to get on pace.

Speaker 3: Because we're talking about Ernie Clement fourth round twenty seventeen draft, Cleveland Indians, Nathan Lucas, seventh round twenty fifteen Draft, Cleveland Indians. Like they didn't, just like they didn't just buy this team. Everyone's like, oh, you know, the only way you can win postseason is by buying team, buying players and getting all the all the money. It's all about, you know, we should have equal payroll and everybody should be able to buy the same players. You know what, dance, dance with the person you came with. And you know what these guys are. I think Ernie clement is seven multi hit games in the postseason now, like they're rolling these boys out. They're rolling them out and they're putting together at bats. They're doing what they do and they're not like man, I wouldonder what my analytics say about how how my launch angle's going in my swinging speed. You know what, they're up one zero right now.

Speaker 1: Also, they kept their superstar, Bladdy Junior. And the story with the Dodgers, Yes, they spend a lot of money, but they stole superstars from teams that easily, easily, easily could have afforded them. That includes Mookie Betts in Boston, that includes Freddie Freeman in Atlanta, among others. So just keep that in mind. Laddy Junior stays, it's it's a big, big example. What you got another you want to add.

Speaker 3: No, just the fact that the Blue Jays they extended Alejandra Kirk this offseason too, and he had a down year last year. I'm not saying that money makes players better. I'm saying there's certain times when you put guys in situations that they get to play their game because they have security, because they have the ability to say, Okay, you know what, I'm kind of an unorthodox player. I'm gonna hear hate from something from one side. I'm just gonna do my thing. I'm gonna do my thing for the team to win. They extended him, and look at the year that Alejandra Kirk's had.

Speaker 1: That's a great call. So he got the extension late spring training, five years, fifty eight million bucks, and that's going to take him through his prime years. You've got one of the top catchers in the sport for twelve million dollars per year. He would have been a free agent after next season. Very well done, and your right crats, he was coming off and season. That's a good time to throw some money at someone and say, hey, you don't know what life's going to bring. You have about fifty eight million dollars and in baseball terms, that ain't much. So credit on that side. I also want to bring up a grown Yeah.

Speaker 3: Sorry, I also look into the different stuff with al Jhundra Kirk. Everyone looks at offense, but the guy was a goldgloved, gold glove type of player two years ago. And then I know from talking to guys on the inside that they were not happy with the way that he was necessarily receiving the same way as he was the year before. His blocking was really good. He was low to the ground and he was able to get a lot of numbers in different ways. And he said, you know what, I think my blocking the way I mean, my receiving the way I was doing it before is good, but I think I can add to it this way. And I really think a contract helps a guy like this say I know what I know because I'm the one out there doing it and I'm gonna play my way. And he's still a young player. People look at him and they're like, oh, man, you know he's he's he's a different he's a different body type. There's no way it's gonna it's gonna play and translate to the big leagues like he's done it the whole time and he's now able to do it his way without saying ooh, you gotta change, you gotta change because you got to hit for more slug you gotta you gotta receive differently because you know he's doing it his way. And I think a lot of the contract really helps because there's numbers that back that up.

I liked that they played him but then swapped him out for IKF. That should be the play going forward. So when we left our show this afternoon, Todd Father, we didn't know where bo would play, and then they go, uh, second base, first time since twenty nineteen, where he played like one game in the miners he played I think twenty eighteen got a little more time there. But he's never played second base in the major leagues and he was off since the sixth of September to try and recover from a knee injury. And here he is back, one for two with a walk and a play at second base that makes other teams go, you know what, when this guy hits free agency, we could sign him to play second base too.

Speaker 2: He's a team guy, as we know that, he's not afraid to play any positions. He looked comfortable at the plate, you know, three to zero count swinging. I thought that was really fantastic. I'm sitting here with my buddy Dave and I'm like, listen, is he swinging three to oh here or what? And I said, let's go, And all of a sudden, he gets a number to right field. That must have felt pretty darn good. Made a huge play in the hole there, nice throat a first base Again, You're not going to see him run really hard. But guess what, this is what we talked about earlier. He's the guy. He's a beast. He's an absolute stud of a player. He's a top thirty player that you need to see on that field. And if he's on that field, good things are gonna happen, and I think this only boosts them. We'll see how he feels tomorrow because back to back games he hasn't played either. But again, when you're up that big, you can make that change. I k have better be ready just in case they need to put him in a little earlier. But again, huge part for Toronto's success just getting him on the field.

Speaker 1: Yeah, he's not running well, but he looks comfortable at the plate, and they said the knees still bothering him for sure. You can tell when he's moving around. Right when he was doubled up, he wasn't moving that well over to first compared to what you usually see from him. But at the plate solid and that's really tough. I mean, I have no idea about this, but you can tell me, especially you, Right, you don't play for days, then you just pop up. How about bo don't play for six weeks and then pop up against Blake Snell in World Series Game one. Also, you're going to play a new position.

Speaker 3: The position part is what I was impressed with. He didn't try to make too crazy of a play. I think it was Taoscar. You know it wasn't going to be a double play, but he still made the turn and he just that turn looked effortless. It looked fluid, which I love to see. He's seemed comfortable around the bag, which is good. You're not going to see him be down any hustle doubles, and that's fine. I do want to see his continued approach of you know what, they're gonna give me that ginormous three to four hole between the first basement and the second baseman, I'm gonna go that way. I think the number three to zero. I think it was a change up, kind of cute off the end. So I'm like, eh, okay, but if you're getting this kind of production out of them, sorry, there's nobody else on the lineup. There's nobody else that's not on the roster that's gonna give you the same thing. And they have a goal glove winner or a goal glove finalist at multiple positions in IKF who can come in in those situations. So good for the Jays for having them out there and not being afraid, like, you know, we'll ease him in off the bench. Look sucking up through Game two. If he's hurting, the knee swells up play Game two, you get off after that on Sunday because MLB is afraid of the NFL, and then you play games games three and five. If it's really swelled up to me, this has added such a boost for this lineup.

Speaker 1: Okay, Todd Father. They were able to figure out Blake Snell enough to not let him go eight innings. Mission accomplished, and then they get to the bullpen. There's one weakness that stands out over everything else with the Dodgers, and that's been obvious since the first game they played, the wild Card game against the Reds. Their bullpen is a problem. And guess what happened Their bullpen was a problem.

Speaker 2: Yeah, got exploited in a little bed. And as you saw, four innings is not going to do it. I don't care who's starting anymore. It's just not how this playoff is rolling. It's not how this World Series is going. You need your starters to go five plus, if not six plus. And again, I honestly, I'm not making an excuse for Blake SNeW, but I think a little bit extra time I might have changed, you know, not only the way he pitches, but his mindset and going into it. Baseball players I don't know about Ucratzy, but you know most of them at least, they want to keep going. They want to play, they want to play, and we've had those conversations before. But a week off or whatever the time was is a pretty long time. And you could tell his fastball stayed up. His breaking stuff either got fouled off or got hit pretty hard. So just couldn't find that fastball. And I thought once, you know, if he finds that fastball up in his own or inner half, which he's really good at, he's really good at throwing. But it just didn't seem like he had it. I mean, even the first inning he got the first two outs. The next thing you know, he's twenty eight pitches in the first inning and just got away with that pop fly with bases loaded. So it just seemed like it just wasn't wasn't there day to day, even though they're up to night, and you felt like something was gonna happen.

Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, I think there's a I think there's a clear there's a clear media bias that you know what your days off means something. The fact that some a team that swept going against a team that has won game seven, has never won a series, there's something to that storyline. But I'll be honest, if there's a team that can fight against that storyline, it's Los Angeles Dodgers because of the fact that, like little things I tweeted about it during the game. Every time you showed one of the hitters, whether it's Tay Oscar, whether it's Max, whether it was Key k talking to the first base coach, they're talking about like the angle that the slider comes in on, and you saw Max even say like, Okay, that slider's like actually backing up more like a left handed slider, a left handed curveball coming out of a right hander's arm. And the reason I say that is because this team makes adjustments. This team does a good job of saying, Okay, I understand why a layoff would hurt us, but we're gonna go out and do this. We're gonna we have this to draw from. I mean, I don't know that there's many postseason experiences that this Dodgers team hasn't experienced. So when you talk about like when you talk about like veteran like knowing how things are gonna go, this team has been battle tested. So you see them being able to make that adjustment as the series goes on, even if they had a little bit of a layoff.

Speaker 1: Yeah, the adjustment also was Blake Snell was able to fool the Blue Jays during the regular season in a brilliant outing, and they remembered it. They got eaten up by that change up, and it didn't happen again. And I mean the change up they mentioned at one point during the broadcast two for twenty two to eleven strikeouts in the postseason entering that outing, and then they were at least at five hits if not more, against that changeup. So it was a total difference there you go. The fact that the left he's in struggle with Snell either is actually terrifying Mikey in the chat. Okay, So I'm gonna throw a different idea out there for Dave Roberts. If he feels like he doesn't have enough to trust in the bullpen, does he get starters involved? I mean, you could say that was Sheen, but he's a reliever now for them. I'm saying, do you see Blake Snell on his throat day later in this series? Do you see Glass now for a bullpen session or two in between his outings? Just throwing it out there. Does sho Hao Tani become a bullpen factor late in games? And maybe Roki Sasaki comes in a little bit earlier, or Roki's got to give him two or three Just throwing that out there based on Game one here, Todd father, if I'm LA and a starter doesn't get me through six ish, like you mentioned, it's going to be a very nervous time period to get to the late stages of the game. If you're in a close one up, a run or two or an a TI game. I'm just saying that is the challenge now, and Dave Roberts didn't have to deal with it at all at all. In the last rounds, they just breezed by a team that they were so much better then. But this might be different.

Speaker 2: Yeah, anything goes Scott, you know that. I think you take a game by game. Yeah, of course, after this game and you're going tomorrow, you're thinking about the bullpen and oh boy, if I'm Dave Roberts, all right, well we need some help here. We Needyamamoto to come in here and get after it and do his job and give me six seven plus innings and find a way to win. But if they do lose that game tomorrow, then no holds bars. Everybody needs to be ready and it doesn't matter matter what inning. They need to be ready to come in. Of course, you know, going down to nothing is very big and for Toronto will be huge. Know they got to play three in LA. But again, take it day by day. Understand. You know this happened before too, but they found ways to win. So is this the time where they don't find those ways to win? We'll see themorrow night.

Speaker 3: I don't think you changed. I don't think you changed. I don't I don't think one game shows you necessarily that you have to change and go, Okay, Blake Snell, You're available. I think I think that's happening. I don't think in two days Blake Snell's throwing his side going dog. I'm not available. I signed one hundred and seventy million dollar contract. I know it's only one hundred and fifty two million current present day value, but I'm not available. Like to me, I think this same status quo is going forward. I think you ran into the fact that they did a great job of pushing Blake Snell out in the fifth, like he got through five. He was at I guess he would consider be five plus and they did a great job. Look, he got a ball on the ground and it wasn't at somebody. He could have been a groundball double play and he could have gotten through six. There. I don't think you necessarily change and panic and and pivot, because I already think the only guy you have right now that you trust that is a true bullpen piece, like throughout the year bullpen piece is Blake Trinon. I don't think. I don't think you're trusting Emma Sheehan necessarily as oh well, he was a bullpen piece he started, He started a lot of games for him. Roki was a starter and he's now considered a bullpen piece. So I think you're still sticking with the same pieces. I don't think you're going, hey, show, Hey, I need you to be ready for the ninth because we might use Roki in the seventh and the eighth. I don't think they're at that point yet. If you see that, I think the Blue Jays have really cracked the shell that is the Dodger's powerhouse, and it's how Dave Roberts deploys all of their pitching.

Speaker 1: Was she and the right guy there? I mean easy to look back now. And I also, you know, we're thinking about Alex Bessi and the FAM. He's not going to appear in this series. You know, we were talking earlier. We didn't know for sure if he was going to be on that that Bereatman or Family Medical Emergency List or anything like that. The Dodgers said they didn't want to put him on there because they didn't even want to put pressure on him to come back when he shouldn't be coming back yet. From what he's dealing with off the field, that's super serious. He's a super valuable piece in the circle of trust in a bullpen that is thin. So you're going to have to score early, like you like, like you say, Todd Father, score early, and for Game two, ride Yamamoto. Yamamoto's obviously, I mean, you're not going to pick up the strikeouts like you usually do against the Blue Jays. They're the best contact team in baseball. But he's got a lot of secondary stuff. And the thing right now is this team's not chasing that much. But you gotta hope that they chase a little bit on the secondary stuff because he's got some of the best in baseball and that at least leads to some weak contact right and not as much quality of contact from the Blue Jays, and that gives the Dodgers an edge early on in the game and that they can ride Yamamoto and not be nervous where you know, if it's close and you feel like he's got a problem in an inning, that's where you put Dave Roberts in a tough situation. So we'll see how that looks, but that's what we have to look forward to in Game two. On the other side, like you mentioned, Trey Savage did not have his splitter. They talked a lot about how he hasn't done four days rest starts very often this year. I think five out of almost thirty ish, if you're including everything from down in a ball all the way up to the show in the postseason. He just didn't have the splitter at no feel for the splitter. The slider was good, and he battled and got through Kevin Gossman's not going to look like Trey Ya Savage did. I think there's a pretty good chance that Gosmin's gonna have fastball command and he's going to know where he splitter is going. So even though you know the Dodgers are like, hey, we've got another ace going out there, the Blue Jays have their big man, like this is their vettering, big money number one starter.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and before I go on about that, the Dodgers had opportunities here in this game too early. They did have an opportunity and Page struck out with the bases load and then they couldn't get anything else. You know, they had another opportunity to get guys in, So don't get a twisted the Dodgers can hit. They had an opportunity to actually blow this game up. A little bit earlier in the game, which they didn't. But that's baseball in a nutshell. Yeah. One thing I'm thinking about with Gosman is is that him coming in in game seven? Is that going to mess up how he does as a starter? I don't think so It's just something to think about, well, because it wasn't the exact thing that he does day in and day out. Is jah Mamoto gonna be that nasty pitcher that goes over one hundred pitches and you know, saves the day for them going to LA. So forget about what they throw. I want to see what they do and how long they throw for. This could be a battle man, This could be a two to one game where we see a pitcher's duel, or it could be just like this, all of a sudden, big inning and it breaks out two really good pictures. This is gonna be a really fun game to watch tomorrow, and I'm I'm ready to go. I can't wait for this one too. Let's see what happens, all right.

Speaker 3: I mean Game two you already mentioned it, Todd. Game two, you got Yamamoto versus Gosman, you got Splitter versus Splitter. Really like everything is setting up for those splitters. The difference is Gosman, if you're able to say, okay, I'm taking a pitch down. Everything down, this is I mean, this is an advanced approach. The Blue Jays have the ability to have an advanced approach, but they also have the ability to swing at a lot of pitches and they say, okay, Yamamoto, anything down, we're not swinging. I think Gosman has the edge there because the Dodgers are gonna do that. The difference is Gosman's able to locate that heater down in a way. He's able to say, I see you taking each one of my best pitches, each one of my swing and mispitches the pitch that I think was the second best chase pitch out of the zone in all of Major League Baseball for Gosman. And he says, okay, I'll just playing out my heater at the bottom. I'll plan out my heater at the bottom again for some strike strikeouts, looking for some get back into count strikes. And I don't know that Yamamoto has that ability. Yamamoto does what he does by saying, Okay, I'm gonna take advantage of teams that are gonna swing a little bit out of the zone. So which Blue Jays team is gonna show up the team that says, okay, we control the zone like we did tonight because will little strike zone was exactly that it was little, Or are we going to be a team that, Hey, we try to put the ball in play a lot and then Yamamoto's splint comes into play and he's able to get a lot of quick outs. Game two, I'm even if the Blue Jays had lost this game, I'm still intrigued by Game two because the Blue Jays have their ace going. Now, they're up a game and they have their ace going.

Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're home for one more too. I mean, imagine if they can take another one here and take a two to zero lead heading over to La putting some pressure on Hey, they finished with one more win than the Dodgers, and it really matters regular season matters. They get themselves that home game here to start and the last thing on the serious side, then we'll finish on a fun note. But if you look at what the Dodgers were able to accomplish in the last round, it was incredible. But that just doesn't happen. Two series in a row. I mean, the Blue Jays first of all, are clicking their dynamic offense. But also Blake Snell's fastball command wasn't as good as this last outing. I mean, example number one was the bar show homer that was middle middle fastball, and he was painting corners. And he's actually a guy that doesn't usually give in, like he will try to avoid that portion of the plate as well as anyone. He'd rather walk you sometimes. But it wasn't the same. So that was a problem for the Dodgers. And we'll see if the other starters can replicate what they put together last time around or not. So we've got ourselves a series and let's finish on a fun note. So I noticed two things every day. Louis Viarland didn't pitch, which was weird, although they put him in the bullpen just to throw around. And we were calling his sin games the other day because I'm sure he was huffing and puffing during those. I'm kidding, but he always pitches. And then Todd Father, you know how the grounds crew is, right. I mean, for me, I've been on playoff fields many many years of my career, back when I was working for MLB, and they would be quick to tell you don't step there, don't go there, don't go there, game going on. Farrell brought an orchestra of people onto the field. They did an incredible job. It was a super cool pregame show. But I was just thinking about all of the conversations that I've had with Ground's crew over the years. How nervous do you think they were when they saw them stomping and singing and getting after it in the little pregame party.

We got to put on a show for the fans and for the people, and you know, the field might have to take a hit for it. So it looked like it didn't hurt it today.
