382 | "Imposter Syndrome" in Therapy: Why It's Time to Let It Go
Play Therapy Podcast: A Master-Class in Child-Centered Play Therapy
In this episode, I challenge the widespread use of the phrase "imposter syndrome" in the therapy field and invite you to reconsider what you're saying—and believing—about yourself as a clinician. I explain how this language often gets introduced early in training and can quietly shape how therapists view their competence, especially when they're new. But in child-centered play therapy, if you are showing up, prioritizing relationship, and staying faithful to the model, there is nothing "imposter" about your work. Being inexperienced or still developing your skills does not mean you are pretending—it means you are in process.
I also explore how negative self-labeling becomes a self-fulfilling pattern, much like the labels we work so hard to undo in the children we serve. If we consistently tell ourselves that we are inadequate or don't know what we're doing, we move in that direction. Instead, I encourage you to shift your internal dialogue toward growth, effort, and commitment to mastery. You don't have to be perfect to be effective. You just have to be present, engaged, and willing to keep learning. This is a call to stop reinforcing discouraging narratives and start speaking into the kind of therapist you are becoming.

00:00:08,600 --> 00:00:08,840 Hi, 3 00:00:08,920 --> 00:00:09,920 I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks, 4 00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:10,899 The Kid Counselor. 5 00:00:11,189 --> 00:00:13,159 This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get 6 00:00:13,159 --> 00:00:15,399 a master class in child-centered play therapy 7 00:00:15,640 --> 00:00:17,840 and practical support and application for your 8 00:00:17,840 --> 00:00:19,500 work with children and their families. 9 00:00:20,079 --> 00:00:21,180 In today's episode, 10 00:00:21,399 --> 00:00:23,600 we are going to talk about 11 00:00:24,520 --> 00:00:25,799 A very common phrase, 12 00:00:25,879 --> 00:00:27,780 but my least favorite phrase, 13 00:00:28,159 --> 00:00:29,239 maybe not my least favorite, 14 00:00:29,280 --> 00:00:29,620 but 15 00:00:29,959 --> 00:00:33,159 it is certainly on my top five list of least favorite 16 00:00:33,159 --> 00:00:36,720 phrases that therapists tend to have a propensity to say. 17 00:00:37,360 --> 00:00:38,540 Imposter syndrome. 18 00:00:39,720 --> 00:00:39,729 And 19 00:00:39,840 --> 00:00:41,700 I know that I've referenced it here and there, 20 00:00:41,709 --> 00:00:44,200 and I know that I've randomly said, 21 00:00:44,240 --> 00:00:45,470 y'all need to stop. 22 00:00:46,080 --> 00:00:48,740 But it's gotten to a point where I just can't take it anymore. 23 00:00:48,919 --> 00:00:50,759 And when I can't take something, 24 00:00:50,919 --> 00:00:52,560 I have to do something about it. 25 00:00:52,680 --> 00:00:52,919 So, 26 00:00:53,040 --> 00:00:53,470 here we are. 27 00:00:53,509 --> 00:00:54,619 We're gonna process this. 28 00:00:55,479 --> 00:00:57,659 And let me begin with, 29 00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:00,119 if you are someone that says you have 30 00:01:00,119 --> 00:01:02,880 imposter syndrome or you struggle with imposter syndrome, 31 00:01:02,919 --> 00:01:04,419 or you feel like an impostor 32 00:01:04,720 --> 00:01:05,860 or any of those things, 33 00:01:06,120 --> 00:01:07,000 this is not 34 00:01:07,239 --> 00:01:07,959 accusational, 35 00:01:08,040 --> 00:01:09,040 this is not judgmental, 36 00:01:09,120 --> 00:01:10,139 this is not critical. 37 00:01:11,360 --> 00:01:13,419 I want to provide dialogue 38 00:01:13,680 --> 00:01:15,459 so that we can move past this. 39 00:01:15,919 --> 00:01:16,150 So, 40 00:01:16,239 --> 00:01:17,919 please do not feel like this is an attack. 41 00:01:17,989 --> 00:01:18,839 This is not, 42 00:01:19,080 --> 00:01:20,559 you need to knock it off, 43 00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:21,910 but you should. 44 00:01:22,360 --> 00:01:22,930 And 45 00:01:23,120 --> 00:01:24,160 I'm gonna give some reasoning, 46 00:01:24,239 --> 00:01:25,160 some rationale. 47 00:01:25,279 --> 00:01:25,599 Hopefully, 48 00:01:25,639 --> 00:01:26,599 when we get to the end of this, 49 00:01:26,680 --> 00:01:27,779 you're going to see. 50 00:01:28,809 --> 00:01:30,150 A different side of things. 51 00:01:30,930 --> 00:01:31,989 But here's what I know. 52 00:01:32,290 --> 00:01:33,080 This is being 53 00:01:33,569 --> 00:01:34,089 coached, 54 00:01:34,330 --> 00:01:34,970 taught, 55 00:01:35,129 --> 00:01:37,010 and talked about in grad school. 56 00:01:38,300 --> 00:01:40,040 So these seeds are getting planted 57 00:01:40,769 --> 00:01:42,599 when we actually don't know what we're doing, 58 00:01:42,980 --> 00:01:44,699 and we actually are new to the field 59 00:01:44,889 --> 00:01:47,139 and we don't have enough hours under our belt, 60 00:01:47,389 --> 00:01:50,839 and we're very green and very new and we're rookies, 61 00:01:51,099 --> 00:01:54,839 and we have this notion that is introduced to us 62 00:01:55,019 --> 00:01:55,529 that 63 00:01:56,230 --> 00:01:57,440 We have imposter syndrome. 64 00:01:58,699 --> 00:02:01,300 And we're not really who we say that we are, 65 00:02:01,379 --> 00:02:02,260 we're just pretending. 66 00:02:03,480 --> 00:02:03,680 Well, 67 00:02:03,790 --> 00:02:06,160 I understand in theory where that comes from. 68 00:02:06,279 --> 00:02:07,680 I understand that 69 00:02:08,199 --> 00:02:10,669 when you are pretending to be someone that you're not, 70 00:02:10,960 --> 00:02:12,789 that does in fact make you an imposter. 71 00:02:14,449 --> 00:02:16,320 But in the world of CCPT, 72 00:02:17,429 --> 00:02:18,699 If you know the model. 73 00:02:19,940 --> 00:02:21,279 And you are adherent 74 00:02:21,500 --> 00:02:22,259 to the model. 75 00:02:23,250 --> 00:02:26,429 And you prioritize relationship above all else, 76 00:02:26,770 --> 00:02:29,119 even in the midst of your lack of skills, 77 00:02:29,410 --> 00:02:32,029 even in the midst of your lack of experience, 78 00:02:32,449 --> 00:02:34,809 even in the midst of your self-doubt, 79 00:02:35,330 --> 00:02:37,750 if you prioritize relationship, 80 00:02:38,649 --> 00:02:39,970 It all works out in the end. 81 00:02:41,110 --> 00:02:43,559 And there is nothing impostory 82 00:02:44,440 --> 00:02:45,259 about that. 83 00:02:45,720 --> 00:02:46,860 Are you showing up? 84 00:02:47,080 --> 00:02:48,119 Are you present? 85 00:02:48,440 --> 00:02:49,509 Are you faithful? 86 00:02:49,839 --> 00:02:51,059 Are you engaged? 87 00:02:51,520 --> 00:02:53,630 Are you communicating the bee with attitudes? 88 00:02:54,000 --> 00:02:56,820 Are you building bond and rapport and trust with that kid? 89 00:02:57,559 --> 00:02:59,259 Are you trusting the process? 90 00:02:59,669 --> 00:03:02,220 Are you waiting it out instead of having an agenda? 91 00:03:03,039 --> 00:03:04,029 You're not an imposter, 92 00:03:04,080 --> 00:03:05,130 you're CCPT. 93 00:03:07,369 --> 00:03:07,949 And 94 00:03:08,369 --> 00:03:10,529 I've gotten to a point where when someone says it, 95 00:03:10,850 --> 00:03:11,509 it's like, 96 00:03:11,929 --> 00:03:13,550 I want to crawl out of my skin 97 00:03:13,929 --> 00:03:14,470 because 98 00:03:15,130 --> 00:03:16,889 self-fulfilling prophecy is a thing, 99 00:03:16,929 --> 00:03:17,240 y'all, 100 00:03:17,289 --> 00:03:18,190 we know this. 101 00:03:18,850 --> 00:03:21,789 How many kids have we seen walk through our 102 00:03:22,210 --> 00:03:22,910 doors 103 00:03:23,369 --> 00:03:24,679 into play sessions 104 00:03:25,210 --> 00:03:27,550 and they've been labeled or branded 105 00:03:28,149 --> 00:03:30,070 or relegated as the bad kid. 106 00:03:30,929 --> 00:03:32,009 And they behave like it. 107 00:03:33,270 --> 00:03:36,149 And they can't even change their behavior because when they try, 108 00:03:36,710 --> 00:03:38,449 everyone in their life wants them to stay 109 00:03:38,750 --> 00:03:39,490 the bad kid. 110 00:03:40,259 --> 00:03:44,130 So even when they actually start to improve and when therapy does what therapy does, 111 00:03:44,350 --> 00:03:47,259 and they start to make changes and they become a better version of themselves, 112 00:03:47,500 --> 00:03:48,880 they're still stuck 113 00:03:49,500 --> 00:03:51,539 with this self-fulfilling prophecy 114 00:03:51,880 --> 00:03:52,800 phenomenon, 115 00:03:53,100 --> 00:03:54,479 keeping them trapped 116 00:03:54,619 --> 00:03:55,979 as the bad kid. 117 00:03:57,759 --> 00:03:59,419 When we say, 118 00:03:59,679 --> 00:04:02,100 think and believe things about ourselves 119 00:04:02,520 --> 00:04:03,440 as therapists, 120 00:04:03,520 --> 00:04:04,899 as CCPTs. 121 00:04:05,639 --> 00:04:07,179 It better be positive. 122 00:04:07,639 --> 00:04:09,059 It better be encouraging, 123 00:04:09,199 --> 00:04:10,699 it better be uplifting. 124 00:04:11,160 --> 00:04:13,460 It better be all the things that we 125 00:04:13,639 --> 00:04:14,679 want to be. 126 00:04:16,700 --> 00:04:18,608 If we can extend grace 127 00:04:18,709 --> 00:04:21,608 and understanding and acceptance and patience 128 00:04:21,750 --> 00:04:22,790 and forgiveness 129 00:04:22,910 --> 00:04:24,630 and all of these things to our kids, 130 00:04:24,730 --> 00:04:26,429 that's at the heart of CCPT. 131 00:04:27,880 --> 00:04:30,380 How are we so incapable of doing that for ourselves? 132 00:04:31,859 --> 00:04:35,420 And every single time you utter the words or even think them, 133 00:04:35,540 --> 00:04:35,700 maybe, 134 00:04:35,820 --> 00:04:37,239 maybe you don't say them out loud. 135 00:04:37,980 --> 00:04:40,200 Maybe you're a people pleaser or you're a perfectionist, 136 00:04:40,220 --> 00:04:42,049 and so you would never actually say them out loud. 137 00:04:42,100 --> 00:04:43,790 You just think it to yourself all the time. 138 00:04:43,899 --> 00:04:44,059 Man, 139 00:04:44,140 --> 00:04:45,059 I'm such an impostor. 140 00:04:45,260 --> 00:04:47,799 This is just impostor syndrome rearing its ugly head. 141 00:04:48,380 --> 00:04:50,119 Whether you're thinking them or saying them. 142 00:04:51,209 --> 00:04:52,519 It's Pygmalion effect, 143 00:04:52,529 --> 00:04:53,029 y'all. 144 00:04:54,170 --> 00:04:55,329 If you're not familiar with that, 145 00:04:55,450 --> 00:04:55,929 look it up. 146 00:04:56,170 --> 00:04:57,410 Really interesting study. 147 00:04:57,690 --> 00:04:59,809 If you're not familiar with the self-fulfilling prophecy study, 148 00:04:59,929 --> 00:05:00,790 look that up too. 149 00:05:02,200 --> 00:05:04,519 We get a sense of who we are. 150 00:05:05,260 --> 00:05:07,519 And we start to 151 00:05:08,100 --> 00:05:10,839 gravitate toward the direction 152 00:05:11,260 --> 00:05:13,079 that we think most aligns 153 00:05:13,260 --> 00:05:15,179 with what we believe ourselves to be. 154 00:05:16,019 --> 00:05:17,700 So if every single time you turn around, 155 00:05:17,739 --> 00:05:18,059 you're going, 156 00:05:18,179 --> 00:05:19,160 I have no idea what I'm doing. 157 00:05:19,619 --> 00:05:20,410 I'm an imposter. 158 00:05:21,410 --> 00:05:23,750 I don't even understand this whole CCPT thing. 159 00:05:24,170 --> 00:05:24,329 I, 160 00:05:24,410 --> 00:05:25,410 I'm just faking it. 161 00:05:25,579 --> 00:05:25,850 I, 162 00:05:25,970 --> 00:05:26,649 I have no clue. 163 00:05:26,769 --> 00:05:26,929 I've, 164 00:05:27,010 --> 00:05:28,269 I've only done this 6 hours. 165 00:05:28,369 --> 00:05:28,519 Like, 166 00:05:28,570 --> 00:05:28,690 who, 167 00:05:28,779 --> 00:05:29,480 who am I? 168 00:05:29,609 --> 00:05:30,399 What do I know? 169 00:05:30,529 --> 00:05:30,970 What, 170 00:05:31,380 --> 00:05:32,829 every time you say that to yourself. 171 00:05:34,040 --> 00:05:36,859 It makes you less likely to master this model. 172 00:05:38,140 --> 00:05:38,149 Because 173 00:05:38,579 --> 00:05:39,649 you're going to. 174 00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:41,730 Veer 175 00:05:42,049 --> 00:05:42,829 over 176 00:05:43,369 --> 00:05:44,970 to that as a reality. 177 00:05:46,200 --> 00:05:47,660 Speak into truth 178 00:05:48,200 --> 00:05:49,320 what you want. 179 00:05:50,549 --> 00:05:51,589 I'll figure this out. 180 00:05:51,799 --> 00:05:52,929 I'm gonna work hard. 181 00:05:53,470 --> 00:05:54,829 I'm going to master this. 182 00:05:55,070 --> 00:05:57,179 I'm going to climb the summit. 183 00:05:57,630 --> 00:06:01,209 I'm going to understand how to reflect feelings more appropriately. 184 00:06:01,549 --> 00:06:02,410 I know enough. 185 00:06:02,510 --> 00:06:04,410 I'm prioritizing relationship. 186 00:06:04,670 --> 00:06:06,690 I'm focusing on the be with attitudes. 187 00:06:07,309 --> 00:06:10,450 I'm showing up every single day and I'm giving kids everything I have. 188 00:06:11,149 --> 00:06:13,369 Those are the things that we should be saying to ourselves. 189 00:06:14,339 --> 00:06:16,309 But that's not what we say to ourselves at all. 190 00:06:17,549 --> 00:06:18,790 More often than not, 191 00:06:19,070 --> 00:06:21,369 we're very negative and very critical. 192 00:06:22,140 --> 00:06:24,519 And we have nothing nice to say about ourselves. 193 00:06:26,239 --> 00:06:26,589 I, 194 00:06:27,019 --> 00:06:28,299 I was on a coaching call. 195 00:06:29,279 --> 00:06:31,239 I'm probably gonna get in trouble with my coaching folks. 196 00:06:31,320 --> 00:06:32,040 I love y'all. 197 00:06:32,239 --> 00:06:33,179 Don't be mad at me. 198 00:06:33,600 --> 00:06:35,059 I was on a coaching call last week 199 00:06:35,200 --> 00:06:37,700 and it was like the 4th coaching call in a row 200 00:06:38,160 --> 00:06:42,420 where when we got to the end of the video review and the therapist talked to 201 00:06:42,760 --> 00:06:45,140 the person that shared their video and they share thoughts, 202 00:06:45,279 --> 00:06:46,630 and the goal of that is like, 203 00:06:46,679 --> 00:06:46,880 you know, 204 00:06:47,040 --> 00:06:47,359 what, 205 00:06:47,600 --> 00:06:50,640 what skill did you notice or what stood out for you or 206 00:06:50,640 --> 00:06:53,380 what's something that you want to share that's encouraging to the therapist. 207 00:06:54,579 --> 00:06:55,200 And 208 00:06:55,380 --> 00:06:57,279 it was like the 4th call in a row 209 00:06:57,700 --> 00:07:00,209 where the therapists were just being therapists. 210 00:07:00,459 --> 00:07:01,209 And so, 211 00:07:01,459 --> 00:07:02,040 it was like, 212 00:07:02,260 --> 00:07:03,679 I just really want to validate 213 00:07:04,540 --> 00:07:05,029 that 214 00:07:05,179 --> 00:07:05,540 and I just, 215 00:07:05,660 --> 00:07:07,239 I really want to honor that 216 00:07:07,579 --> 00:07:10,359 and I really want to just appreciate that 217 00:07:10,579 --> 00:07:12,559 and thank you for being vulnerable. 218 00:07:13,029 --> 00:07:13,390 And, 219 00:07:13,739 --> 00:07:15,290 and I'm listening to this and I'm like, 220 00:07:15,540 --> 00:07:15,779 gosh, 221 00:07:15,899 --> 00:07:16,420 we just, 222 00:07:16,540 --> 00:07:17,880 we can be so 223 00:07:18,220 --> 00:07:19,059 CCPT 224 00:07:19,700 --> 00:07:20,440 to others. 225 00:07:21,970 --> 00:07:24,489 Where we can be such therapists to others. 226 00:07:25,390 --> 00:07:29,809 We're so understanding and we're so loving and we're so kind and we're so supportive 227 00:07:30,029 --> 00:07:32,170 and like we know all the things to say 228 00:07:32,589 --> 00:07:34,269 when we have our therapist hat on. 229 00:07:36,290 --> 00:07:37,690 And then what are the things that we're 230 00:07:37,690 --> 00:07:39,869 saying and thinking and believing about ourselves? 231 00:07:40,570 --> 00:07:41,850 Usually the polar opposite. 232 00:07:43,700 --> 00:07:45,510 Why are we doing this to ourselves? 233 00:07:46,390 --> 00:07:46,829 It, 234 00:07:47,089 --> 00:07:47,100 uh, 235 00:07:47,269 --> 00:07:48,320 the why matters. 236 00:07:48,989 --> 00:07:51,170 Why are we doing this to ourselves? 237 00:07:51,750 --> 00:07:55,489 If you want to become a master of CCPT. 238 00:07:56,670 --> 00:07:58,130 Say to yourself, 239 00:07:58,429 --> 00:08:00,010 I'm going to master this model. 240 00:08:00,429 --> 00:08:02,410 I'm working hard to figure this out. 241 00:08:02,910 --> 00:08:04,649 I am identifying my weaknesses, 242 00:08:04,660 --> 00:08:07,450 and I am pouring into honing those skills. 243 00:08:07,989 --> 00:08:11,470 I'm going to give everything I have until I can figure out this limit setting skill. 244 00:08:12,589 --> 00:08:14,420 Why are we not saying those things to ourselves? 245 00:08:14,459 --> 00:08:15,839 If those are our goals. 246 00:08:16,890 --> 00:08:18,450 We wallow all day in, 247 00:08:18,489 --> 00:08:18,649 oh, 248 00:08:18,730 --> 00:08:19,910 I have imposter syndrome. 249 00:08:21,190 --> 00:08:22,170 What are we doing 250 00:08:23,619 --> 00:08:23,940 I, 251 00:08:24,059 --> 00:08:26,260 I cannot even wrap my brain around it. 252 00:08:27,329 --> 00:08:29,029 So my encouragement, 253 00:08:29,489 --> 00:08:30,109 my 254 00:08:30,450 --> 00:08:30,929 charge, 255 00:08:31,089 --> 00:08:31,790 my challenge. 256 00:08:34,010 --> 00:08:35,190 Every time 257 00:08:35,570 --> 00:08:38,869 you have any thought that pops into your head about your skills, 258 00:08:39,119 --> 00:08:40,250 about what you're capable of, 259 00:08:40,369 --> 00:08:41,400 about your competence, 260 00:08:41,690 --> 00:08:42,750 about your confidence, 261 00:08:42,969 --> 00:08:44,000 about your experience, 262 00:08:44,250 --> 00:08:44,799 about whatever, 263 00:08:45,289 --> 00:08:48,869 anything that might pop up that you normally would be negative about yourself. 264 00:08:49,890 --> 00:08:52,349 I sure hope that my voice pops into your head. 265 00:08:53,119 --> 00:08:56,210 And I sure hope that you hear me saying to you. 266 00:08:57,210 --> 00:08:58,390 You are enough. 267 00:08:59,640 --> 00:09:01,000 Your skills are enough, 268 00:09:01,159 --> 00:09:02,679 your experience is enough, 269 00:09:02,919 --> 00:09:04,760 your knowledge of the model is enough, 270 00:09:04,960 --> 00:09:06,739 you showing up is enough. 271 00:09:07,080 --> 00:09:09,390 The relationship is the most important thing. 272 00:09:10,159 --> 00:09:11,789 Are you gonna flub some skills? 273 00:09:12,210 --> 00:09:13,469 Almost unequivocally. 274 00:09:13,969 --> 00:09:15,530 Are you going to look back and go, 275 00:09:15,690 --> 00:09:15,849 Dang, 276 00:09:15,929 --> 00:09:17,590 I totally royally screwed that up. 277 00:09:17,789 --> set a limit and not, 281 00:09:22,650 --> 00:09:22,830 uh, 282 00:09:22,840 --> 00:09:25,320 even anything close to a limit came out of my mouth. 283 00:09:25,609 --> 00:09:25,770 Yep, 284 00:09:25,849 --> 00:09:26,780 that happens too. 285 00:09:27,250 --> 00:09:28,960 It doesn't make you an imposter. 286 00:09:29,869 --> 00:09:31,849 It makes you someone that's on a journey 287 00:09:32,219 --> 00:09:33,289 toward mastery, 288 00:09:33,750 --> 00:09:35,859 and it means that you haven't arrived yet and, 289 00:09:35,909 --> 00:09:36,510 and look, 290 00:09:36,590 --> 00:09:36,950 y'all, 291 00:09:37,109 --> 00:09:37,809 PSA 292 00:09:38,229 --> 00:09:39,469 you never arrive. 293 00:09:40,760 --> 00:09:42,539 I don't care how long you've been doing this. 294 00:09:42,640 --> 00:09:44,320 I don't care how skilled you are, 295 00:09:44,479 --> 00:09:46,780 I don't care how much mastery you've achieved, 296 00:09:47,080 --> 00:09:48,700 there is always more 297 00:09:48,840 --> 00:09:49,440 to learn. 298 00:09:50,489 --> 00:09:52,429 There is always higher 299 00:09:52,729 --> 00:09:53,940 things to pursue. 300 00:09:55,179 --> 00:09:57,299 So you're never gonna get to your point where you're like, 301 00:09:57,460 --> 00:09:57,960 OK, 302 00:09:58,140 --> 00:09:58,840 I am, 303 00:09:59,020 --> 00:09:59,700 I did my work, 304 00:09:59,760 --> 00:10:00,179 I'm done. 305 00:10:00,299 --> 00:10:01,169 I can coast now. 306 00:10:01,239 --> 00:10:02,320 That's not how it goes. 307 00:10:03,650 --> 00:10:04,940 There's always more to learn. 308 00:10:06,010 --> 00:10:06,429 So 309 00:10:06,609 --> 00:10:08,489 I hope that this encourages you. 310 00:10:08,599 --> 00:10:12,409 I hope that we can stop saying the phrase imposter syndrome. 311 00:10:13,119 --> 00:10:15,760 I hope that we take over the entire therapy world. 312 00:10:15,880 --> 00:10:16,159 Look, 313 00:10:16,359 --> 00:10:16,479 I, 314 00:10:16,530 --> 00:10:19,219 I don't have influence and sway over all of therapists. 315 00:10:19,450 --> 00:10:22,099 I do have influence and sway over CCPTs. 316 00:10:22,760 --> 00:10:26,020 So my hope is that at least within CCPTs. 317 00:10:26,950 --> 00:10:28,640 We don't ever say that phrase 318 00:10:29,030 --> 00:10:32,969 because there is nothing about what we do in child-centered play therapy 319 00:10:33,469 --> 00:10:34,250 that is 320 00:10:34,830 --> 00:10:36,049 anything close to imposter. 321 00:10:38,090 --> 00:10:39,609 We love our kids, 322 00:10:39,770 --> 00:10:41,090 we accept our kids, 323 00:10:41,330 --> 00:10:42,809 we trust the process, 324 00:10:43,010 --> 00:10:45,010 and we pour into building relationships. 325 00:10:45,369 --> 00:10:46,390 That is enough. 326 00:10:48,219 --> 00:10:51,460 Do we need to work on our skills and our mastery and, 327 00:10:51,469 --> 00:10:52,979 and having competence and confidence? 328 00:10:53,049 --> 00:10:53,799 Of course, 329 00:10:54,510 --> 00:10:56,299 we don't ignore that. 330 00:10:57,039 --> 00:10:59,010 And in lieu of working on that, 331 00:10:59,080 --> 00:11:00,510 we just focus on relationship, 332 00:11:00,760 --> 00:11:02,640 but relationship is always the priority and 333 00:11:02,640 --> 00:11:04,400 it's always the most important component. 334 00:11:06,039 --> 00:11:06,510 So, 335 00:11:06,520 --> 00:11:07,409 for your sake, 336 00:11:07,599 --> 00:11:08,729 for your kids' sake, 337 00:11:09,039 --> 00:11:10,440 for your practice's sake, 338 00:11:10,559 --> 00:11:12,650 for the sustainability in this field's sake, 339 00:11:12,880 --> 00:11:13,679 for my sake, 340 00:11:13,919 --> 00:11:14,640 for God's sake, 341 00:11:14,840 --> 00:11:15,799 for everybody's sake, 342 00:11:15,909 --> 00:11:18,599 can we please stop saying imposter syndrome? 343 00:11:18,780 --> 00:11:19,559 Stop thinking it, 344 00:11:19,640 --> 00:11:20,400 stop believing it, 345 00:11:20,510 --> 00:11:21,419 stop saying it. 346 00:11:22,320 --> 00:11:23,719 None of us are impostors. 347 00:11:25,000 --> 00:11:26,190 You might be new, 348 00:11:26,609 --> 00:11:28,000 you might be green, 349 00:11:28,289 --> 00:11:29,739 you might be inexperienced. 350 00:11:29,929 --> 00:11:32,049 You might be just figuring this out. 351 00:11:32,239 --> 00:11:34,830 You might have never heard of CCPT until yesterday, 352 00:11:35,049 --> 00:11:35,369 and man, 353 00:11:35,440 --> 00:11:37,429 am I glad you're here if you are that new. 354 00:11:38,169 --> 00:11:40,049 You are in the spot you need to be in 355 00:11:40,049 --> 00:11:42,390 if you want to learn more about child-centered play therapy. 356 00:11:42,969 --> 00:11:45,270 But none of those adjectives 357 00:11:45,690 --> 00:11:47,570 are synonyms with imposter. 358 00:11:48,849 --> 00:11:50,039 So we're going to ditch it. 359 00:11:50,330 --> 00:11:52,229 We're going to leave it where it belongs. 360 00:11:53,219 --> 00:11:55,250 And we're going to embrace the notion that 361 00:11:55,250 --> 00:11:57,419 we are becoming better versions of ourselves. 362 00:11:57,979 --> 00:11:59,320 We are works in progress. 363 00:12:00,469 --> 00:12:03,729 So just because you don't have something down and mastered. 364 00:12:04,669 --> 00:12:06,489 It just means that you're still working. 365 00:12:07,190 --> 00:12:08,340 That's something to celebrate, 366 00:12:08,429 --> 00:12:09,330 not to lament, 367 00:12:09,669 --> 00:12:11,650 and it's certainly not worthy of a label 368 00:12:11,650 --> 00:12:14,489 that's negative and critical and depressing and defeating. 369 00:12:15,799 --> 00:12:16,030 So, 370 00:12:16,090 --> 00:12:17,119 I love you all. 371 00:12:17,400 --> 00:12:19,080 If you want to email me with your thoughts, 372
