Survivor's Remorse with Isaac Carree
Season 1 Episode 1 | Survivor's remorse is when a person has feelings of guilt because they survived a life-threatening situation when others did not. The truth is, that same type of guilt can bleed into our day to day lives as we experience our own ascension and those we love perhaps are still figuring things out -- and sometimes even making us feel bad for how much we have accomplished. How do we navigate those seasons in our lives and the ever-changing dynamics with friends and loved ones as a result of our success? Come sit on my couch for a conversation with my dear friend, Isaac Carree, about experiencing survivor's remorse.

00:00:09 Speaker 1: What's up, y'all. Welcome to this episode of Keep It Positive, Sweetie. 00:00:12 Speaker 2: Today we are talking about survivor's remorse. And when I think about survivor's remorse, the quote that comes to mind is heavy is the head that wears the crown. And I have with me my dear friend, my brother from another mother, the Isaac Curry. 00:00:30 Speaker 1: Oh my god. First of all, I'm so happy to have you. 00:00:32 Speaker 2: You are one of my favorite people in the world. You are so talented, so funny. I don't know if if y'all know Ike, but Ike is. 00:00:40 Speaker 1: A comedian, Like he is so funny. 00:00:42 Speaker 2: But we've known each other since like two thousand and seven or eight, Yes, when I was still living in DC and I ended up moving to Atlanta in two thousand and nine, and I remember we had lunch. 00:00:56 Speaker 1: It was olive Garden. I was like, bro, I don't know what's going on. What to do? I don't know, and he's like, unless it, I don't have talk. Have a talk. 00:01:02 Speaker 2: And the first thing you told me is you need to find a church home. So you gave me a list of churches and I was like, okay, and I found a church. But that was the type of guidance I needed, and you still still help me find church home. 00:01:16 Speaker 1: One thing I ain't gonna do is. 00:01:17 Speaker 3: Make sure you church. 00:01:20 Speaker 2: Shout out, doctor Darius Daniels. We could change church. You got me in there, and I'm super happy. But let's talk about your journey. And a lot of people know you from the gospel world, but I want to kind of know, like how you got there, what it was like, because a lot of people feel like they see the outcome, but they don't see the work and things that went through, what you went through. 00:01:40 Speaker 4: First of all, I want to say thank you for having me Like this is I'm sitting here like in awe off, like what God has done in your life, your journey, your heart work, your dedication, your persistence, your consistency, Like success hasn't. 00:01:54 Speaker 3: Changed you, and uh, you just got it on you. It's on you. 00:01:59 Speaker 4: And it's funny because when I look at you, it's like your trajectory is still going up. It's like eyes haven't seen ears, I ever heard that things that's coming. It's like it's like I've literally had a front row seat to see where you started and where you are. And I'm just so proud of you, so thank you. I just had to get that out of the way. I had to give you a flowers because you deserve it. 00:02:23 Speaker 3: Oh Man, my journey, Crystal is It's interesting. I started. 00:02:28 Speaker 4: First of all, you probably wouldn't notice I dropped out of high school to start singing. 00:02:34 Speaker 3: Wow. I dropped out of high school my eleventh grade year, So you knew this is what I want to do. Yeah, I knew, or I was guessing she was wanting to. But I was gonna figure this. 00:02:42 Speaker 4: Up about And I'm from Greensboro, North Carolina, small city, North Carolina, and I just had an opportunity and I was like. 00:02:52 Speaker 5: Music, traveling the world or school. 00:02:54 Speaker 4: And I loved school because I was I played sports, played basketball, played football. When I realized I was good, but I wasn't good enough, I had to fall back on what I knew I was good at, which was singing. Right, So I got opportunity to travel the world with John py Key at the age of seventeen. 00:03:13 Speaker 5: Wow, and I took off. 00:03:15 Speaker 3: Man, I just went and my mother was like, absolutely not. 00:03:20 Speaker 4: And I literally ran away. She went, she went out of town for a church convention. 00:03:25 Speaker 1: Like you ran away from here? 00:03:26 Speaker 3: Because we take what happened that's so stupid, right. 00:03:30 Speaker 4: So what happened was my mother told me you can sing with him because we traveled on the weekends. We would travel like Fridays, Saturday, Sunday, come home Sunday night. She said, you can go as long as on Monday as you get up for school. I'm like, oh, that's fair easy, let's let's go. 00:03:48 Speaker 3: And I would go. 00:03:49 Speaker 4: But we get home like two, three, four o'clock in the morning on a trip. 00:03:52 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:03:53 Speaker 4: And then he lived in Charlotte, so the bus would drop us off in Charlotte and that I have to drop. 00:03:58 Speaker 5: An hour to Greensboro. 00:03:59 Speaker 4: Oh man, yeah, so I'm getting up a school I could be I'll get up seven o'clock. 00:04:02 Speaker 3: So I'm like, oh god. She was like, okay, well you don't want to travel no more. Yeah, And she literally just drew a hardline on the sand You're not going. 00:04:08 Speaker 4: The more'st done until you finish. And she went out of town for a church conference and I moved to Charlotte. It never came back. 00:04:18 Speaker 1: This is gold, Oh my goodness. 00:04:21 Speaker 3: And I didn't talk to my mama for a month. 00:04:23 Speaker 4: I was scared to take her calls, and no cell phones back then, and all that wasn't no beepers even but I was. 00:04:29 Speaker 3: I went calling home, and I think behind my back, John had called her and told I got him. 00:04:34 Speaker 4: Because my mom knew John for years. Oh wow, so she had let him know like he had let her know. 00:04:39 Speaker 5: I got him good. 00:04:41 Speaker 4: But I was afraid of call because I knew if I hurt my mama's horse, I was going. 00:04:44 Speaker 5: I knew what it was like, I'm going home. 00:04:46 Speaker 4: And I went to Charlotte and I figured it out, and I started traveling the world and I fell in love with what I was just doing at church on Sundays, seeing the world, seeing how people responded to it, growing seeing my gift. I was like, oh, I think I could do this. Now I'm young and I'm excited. And from that it's been all gas, no break ever since then. 00:05:08 Speaker 3: Literally. 00:05:09 Speaker 4: Yeah, that was in nineteen ninety. So I've been doing music professionally for thirty three years. 00:05:14 Speaker 1: That's incredible. 00:05:15 Speaker 4: Yeah, So it's been a journey. It's been a blessing and I still scratch my head now. I guess we'll getting into later on in a conversation like why God still chooses me after all these years because I've seen people come and go. I've seen people hit a mountain peak and then they fall off in a season. 00:05:34 Speaker 5: And it's like, what is it about me that you seeing me? 00:05:38 Speaker 4: That you want people to still call my phone? You want people to steal, you want people still interested in me. I can't put my finger on it other than it's the grace of God. Yeah, it's like being from North Carolina. I was just telling my friend the other day. I was like, Yo, I think sometimes good people have a hard time connecting with other good peace people. It's almost like the bad people build the relationships with good people and then they abuse it. But when you find a good person, you never really find that good person that you connect with and grow with. 00:06:13 Speaker 5: It's really hard. 00:06:14 Speaker 4: And I was like, being from North Carolina, I've always been a person who supported other people, push people, and I'm always on the back burner. And I don't say that from a guilt perspective. I genuinely support my friends. 00:06:26 Speaker 2: You do, Yeah, I have to the mountaintop for your friends. 00:06:30 Speaker 4: I have no jealous bone in my body. I don't covet what anybody else has. I really support, But it's early, I don't, you know, because I believe that God rewards those who support others. 00:06:45 Speaker 1: And you see what people. 00:06:48 Speaker 4: God rewards those who supports others, you know, down not trying to be jealous of you, not idous of you, not not hitting you with the guilt of are you change? Well, I am changing because I'm growing, But it doesn't necessarily mean it's negative exactly. So going through that thing, that's the things that go through my mind every day, like why did God? Why is God still choosing me and using me and creating opportunity, Like I'm here with you. Anybody would die to be on this sofa, we're talking to you. And the fact that you call me it wasn't just because we cool. It was because you saw something in me that you felt like added value to what you're doing. 00:07:27 Speaker 3: Right, I'm like, why God? 00:07:29 Speaker 4: So that's the survivors remorse that I battle with every day. Oh God to it like keeps me up at night, It keeps me talking and turning because I just cannot put my finger on it. And and I think that's a sign of our humility, you know, feeling like understanding that God wants us but he doesn't need us. 00:07:48 Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, I want you. I gave you the gift. 00:07:55 Speaker 4: I gave you the ability, but I can use somebody else. 00:07:58 Speaker 2: But I chose you, And I think for me, it's an immense sense of gratitude, but also knowing that I'm not perfect. 00:08:08 Speaker 1: And he continues to be like, no, it's still you go, go, go, go go. I got you. 00:08:12 Speaker 2: And I'm like, there's times where I send like, Lord, the things I've done, and you are. 00:08:16 Speaker 3: Still now you're on my street. 00:08:20 Speaker 4: You're on my street now because Crystal, I know I've done so much that I should be disqualified. I know I've done so much that completely disqualifies me from the race. Yes, and yet and still he's like, my my brace is sufficient for you. 00:08:40 Speaker 3: Yes, keep going going. 00:08:41 Speaker 4: And here's the thing that started bothering me, probably like a year. 00:08:45 Speaker 3: And a half ago, as I saw myself. 00:08:49 Speaker 4: Evolving and changing, not professionally but spiritually, emotionally, healing from the inside out. Yes, I saw that people never see you for where you are. 00:09:03 Speaker 5: They only see you for where you were. 00:09:05 Speaker 1: That's it. 00:09:06 Speaker 4: So they never really give you the We talk and preach and hear about second chances and giving people another chance and forgiving, but people can bring your name up and be like, oh, hell, oh yeah, nah he did. 00:09:16 Speaker 3: And he that based onf what I wished to. 00:09:18 Speaker 4: Be, because they never give themselves an opportunity to sit down and say, wait. 00:09:23 Speaker 1: He's changed, he has changed. 00:09:25 Speaker 3: Yeah, he has evolved. 00:09:27 Speaker 2: Yes, you know, and they looked at themselves, they would see they are they aren't perfect, they haven't They're not the same as they were. 00:09:33 Speaker 3: Right. 00:09:34 Speaker 2: People are so holier than now that they can't even see and they hold your past against one. 00:09:38 Speaker 4: And the greatest deliverance I ever got in my life was being delivered from people, the opinions of people, how they felt about me, what they thought about me. 00:09:47 Speaker 5: You know. 00:09:47 Speaker 4: It's like when I stopped caring about what they said because I knew who I was and Passaderia says is all the time. And when he said it, it hit me like a ton of bricks. He said, you you can never be happy with yourself until you see yourself the way God sees you. 00:10:04 Speaker 3: Wow. Out of the lenses are people, yes, But. 00:10:07 Speaker 4: If you see yourself the way God sees you, it changes everything exponentially. 00:10:12 Speaker 3: Everything changes in your life everything. And it's like, yo, so you. 00:10:16 Speaker 4: Mean to tell me it's really about what God says about me? And how he sees me, versus trying to please people on social media, trying to get likes, trying to be like yes, because who you who you've been called to, that's your tribe, it is, and your tribe knows your vibe. 00:10:34 Speaker 3: Yes, they do. 00:10:35 Speaker 4: Like the people that say you like Crystal, they know who you are, how you are, and they rock with you do they push you, they support you. So it's like you find yourself being cool with like, I don't need no friends. 00:10:46 Speaker 1: Yeah, I love everybody. 00:10:48 Speaker 4: I'm straight and because those are the people that's gonna push you to your next exactly. So that's that's been my thing. So I'm just grateful, you know. 00:10:55 Speaker 1: I love that. 00:10:57 Speaker 2: Was there ever a time as you were on this journey that you felt like stressed from like family or friends and adjusting to your fame. Yeah, whether it was like people expecting things from you or like you mentioned earlier, like oh you didn't change. 00:11:14 Speaker 1: Did you ever deal with that? 00:11:15 Speaker 4: Absolutely? That's been the one for me. More so some family, more so friends and colleagues, people that you kind of came came up in the ranks with. And then when you see yourself kind of and I say this humbly distancing yourself because maybe they took a different road or route the business. Yeah, and when you see yourself distancing yourself from that person, not because you said anything or did anything wrong, just because you your trajectory is just at a different pace and speed and they hit you with it. 00:11:51 Speaker 3: Are you you different? You change it? You know? Put put me on and it's like you are like, yeah, it's like yo. 00:12:01 Speaker 4: I literally had a person that used to be my friend. He told me one time when I was successful, you supported me when you became successful. 00:12:09 Speaker 5: I got jealous. 00:12:11 Speaker 3: He admitted it. 00:12:12 Speaker 4: Now I gave him kudos for admitting it. But after you admitted it, you didn't pivot. 00:12:18 Speaker 3: Oh you stopped. 00:12:29 Speaker 6: WoT okay, you better stop preaching and get out of my business. 00:12:46 Speaker 4: It's one thing to own it, but you stayed in that space. 00:12:51 Speaker 3: Jesus, that can't be your home. That can't be your resting place. 00:12:56 Speaker 4: You gotta be like, once I admit it, and once I knowledge that this is the feeling that I felt, how do I move from that space so I can be free from it? 00:13:06 Speaker 3: But it's almost like. 00:13:09 Speaker 4: You wanted me to join you, and I don't have the capacity to do I don't drive my car and looking in my review mirror, I look out the windshield exactly because if I only stare at their ribew mirrle, I'm going to hit something because I'm only. 00:13:20 Speaker 3: Looking at that what's behind me? 00:13:22 Speaker 5: I move forward, you know. 00:13:23 Speaker 3: So it just didn't work. 00:13:25 Speaker 4: So that's when I start understanding that relationships are for a season. And I'm gonna tell you the book that changed my life. And I'm not a big reader, but I read this book and it changed everything for me immediately. It was Pastor Darius Day's book. Shout out to my pastor, but it was a book called Relationship or Intelligence. Wow, all this book is everything. It breaks up relationships from friendships, associates, assignments and has all these different categories and it shows you that some people that you are really on assignment with has the potential to be a friend, but not necessarily will be a friend. 00:14:00 Speaker 3: You're on assignment. That means I'm here to do a job. 00:14:03 Speaker 4: And when my job is done, we can be cordial, we can be cool, we can share a couple of laughs, but when I'm done, I'm done. 00:14:08 Speaker 1: Done. 00:14:09 Speaker 3: If you see me as a friend and I don't feel the same way. 00:14:12 Speaker 5: Doesn't make me wrong. 00:14:14 Speaker 4: That I understand my assignment and associated we can work together, we can be in close proximity being business partners or whatever, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we're friends. 00:14:24 Speaker 5: And then you have your friendship. 00:14:25 Speaker 4: So all those relationships can turn into something. 00:14:29 Speaker 3: But when they don't, it's when it gets weird. 00:14:31 Speaker 4: Yes, when somebody wants something from you that you don't have the capacity to give to them. So it really helps you understand that every relationship is not equal. It's not and our hearts and our compassion and our guilt, our survivors remorse. Yes, makes us feel like you have to overextend yourself to somebody that you don't really want to because you don't want to feel. 00:14:53 Speaker 3: Like you're being arrogant, you're being funny. 00:14:57 Speaker 4: You know, they call you look at the phone like what's up right right, and you like. 00:15:04 Speaker 3: It's too much. It's like that's not your friend, and it's okay. 00:15:09 Speaker 4: And they may not understand that, but as long as you do, you can move forward without guilt, without shame, without anything. So those are the things I dealt with, uh, And it was hard because people want what you have, but they don't want to go through what you went through to get what you have. 00:15:27 Speaker 2: No, seriously, I deal with that. I deal with people like coveting or wanting what I have. Oh my God, have not done the years of work that it took to get here. 00:15:36 Speaker 4: And sacrifice, because before that was the work ethic, It was the sacrifices that you had to make to get even in the mind frame to say, okay, bunckle down, do this like yes, they don't understand when you were just when you were styling and you were doing fashion, but you had to go to do something else. 00:15:54 Speaker 3: Yes, and Tyler didn't even know. You didn't even know, but you didn't. You didn't try to force that on him. 00:16:00 Speaker 4: You played your role and he waited on the right time, and then God exalted you. 00:16:06 Speaker 5: People don't understand. 00:16:07 Speaker 1: That God exalted me. 00:16:09 Speaker 4: That's why nobody can pull you down, period, because nobody put you up. How could somebody take something from you that they didn't give to you. It don't even make sense, like like sing, it doesn't make sense how you can take something from me that you did not give to me. 00:16:25 Speaker 1: Didn't And then they keep looking like damn, like she's sick. 00:16:28 Speaker 3: No go ahead, she's. 00:16:29 Speaker 4: Still going high, and absolutely they can't they can't fathom that, but they don't understand that it was a process that you had to go through because you're the type of person. 00:16:37 Speaker 3: I'm a type of person. 00:16:38 Speaker 4: Several people have this ability to understand that when I get it, I'm gonna make sure that I don't lose it. I'm a cherish it, I'm an honor it. I'm gonna treat it correctly. Some people take it for granted because they think, oh, another gig I could do that, It's another opportunity. 00:16:55 Speaker 2: And that's what I told Tyler when he's like, I'm gonna give you for Tima and she's gonna it's gonna be a small role. 00:17:00 Speaker 1: What you do with it is up to you. 00:17:02 Speaker 3: It's up to you. 00:17:02 Speaker 2: And then I was like, I looked them in the eyes, I said, I will not let you down because I knew if I had one shot somebody, because it was so many no's and so many doors shut in my face, I knew that if one person believed in me, everybody'll be like, wait, we've been looking over this girl this whole time. Said I'm at to show everybody just life. 00:17:20 Speaker 4: Yes, nobody gave him a shot nobody, that's why can't nobody take it from him? Exactly like I tried it y'all's way and y'all told me wasn't good enough. 00:17:30 Speaker 3: Yep, So I didn't. I didn't play. 00:17:32 Speaker 4: I didn't play by y'all rules. God gave me another road, and I'm on my street. 00:17:38 Speaker 2: He's on history and he's bringing he got thousands of people behind him. 00:17:41 Speaker 1: So the people that he's brought up. 00:17:43 Speaker 4: It can be done. But it's like, what will you do with what God gave you? 00:17:48 Speaker 3: Yeah? 00:17:48 Speaker 4: You know, how will you maximize that? And I've tried to do it over these last thirty three years. You're doing it now and it don't stop. 00:17:57 Speaker 1: It don't stop. 00:17:58 Speaker 2: You said something earlier, and this is something that I've been struggling with that I've talked to Danoor about and my therapist. I had an anxiety attack, my first real anxiety attack. I didn't know what was going on. I was having a heart attack, and she's like, what are you afraid of? And I literally said, I'm afraid of losing it all. I feel afraid that I've worked for all this and that I'm not gonna be able to keep it up and done bought this big house, like are the roads gonna keep coming? And when I bought it and then Denorra even when we're gonna do this podcast. Originally she wanted to call it the a Buzz of the Abundant Abundant Life with Christine and end that meeting. 00:18:35 Speaker 1: In my thoughts, I was like, Web, It's not always like this. I said, well, it's not always abundant. What if I can't keep this up? 00:18:42 Speaker 2: And like with everything going on, it was like the top there is just being crazy and I literally like had I got to la Oscar's weekend and it was like somebody was taking my heart, just squeezing it, and it was just trying to beat through the squeezing, and I was like, what is happening? Vision was going blurred and I was like, am I having a heart attack? 00:18:59 Speaker 1: Like what is happening? 00:19:00 Speaker 2: And it was an anxiety attack and I never I've gotten so good at suppressing is what I'm feeling that I don't just let it, let it go. And a friend of mine saw me that night and he said, I just want to make sure you're okay, because he had just given a speech for Gina Prince Blithewood, the director of Woman Kings, and he literally be lined off the stage and came straight to me. It was as a guy was like, she needs to hear this, and he was like Christally, he said what because he said, thank you for your sacrifices. Thank you for smiling even when you're going through things. He said, because in this industry we're always like, yeah, everything's good and we're breaking down inside. And now like all that resonated with me and he came right to me and I was like, bro, I have my first anxiety attack today. And he said, what I've learned to do is when it comes, don't try to stop it. 00:19:44 Speaker 1: Just let it come and let it go. 00:19:46 Speaker 2: Because when you try to stop it, you're stopping the emotions that. 00:19:49 Speaker 1: You need to get out. Just go through it. 00:19:51 Speaker 2: And I was like, that's so real, but I was so afraid of losing it, you know. And she got I never said this to her, and like a few days later she got on donor got on her end Instagram and she goes it just came to me. She was like, why when God does something for us and he shows us what he can do, do we feel like that he won't continue to do it. And I was like, that spoke to me because yeah, I said, abundant living with Christal. 00:20:12 Speaker 1: I was like, it may not always be like and we're gonna have to change the name of the. 00:20:15 Speaker 3: Yeah, but I'm gonna tell you something. It's amazing that you say that. 00:20:19 Speaker 4: The reason that we feel that way is because the way we were raised. We were raised, Uh, this goes back from you know, whether it's a church upbringing, our ethnicity, we've always been at the bottom of the barrel, trying to claw our way out to the top, to. 00:20:37 Speaker 3: Just get some light to get to the top, right, and. 00:20:40 Speaker 4: When you've been fighting so long to get opportunity because we're not necessarily known for actually helping one another, we're because we're always competing with one another. 00:20:50 Speaker 3: Yes, you know, because it's like if I help Crystal, then Christal's going to take my shine. 00:20:55 Speaker 4: Yeah, So then everybody's going to start all the light is going to start illuminating off Chris so and then my life's gonna get dimned and I'm a fade up. 00:21:02 Speaker 3: That's not how it works, but that's how we've been trained. 00:21:04 Speaker 5: That's all we saw. 00:21:06 Speaker 4: And so what happens is when we have these attacks and we have these moments. 00:21:11 Speaker 3: It's almost like we don't realize that the work. 00:21:16 Speaker 5: Has already been done. 00:21:17 Speaker 4: What's happening in your life has already been written, Like God already knows like this is done. The problem is his ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. So we think of God and how he manifests things in our life the way we think of each other. Yes, like Chris, like, oh Christal, keep spending that money, it's gonna be broken to year. Also he told he want to do that. You know he can afford that car. Why would you do that? Yeah, we see each other the way we see each other. Yes, we don't see each other out of the lenses of the way God sees us. So his ways on our ways, so we can't understand his ways. So it's natural for us to be like, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, because we've seen so many other people uh doing doul a way opportunities and resources. But when you're in God and you're with God and he's bre and he's put the breadth of life on your career, on your life, on your ministry, can't nothing stop that. So it's literally being transformed by the renewing of our minds. 00:22:23 Speaker 3: We have to like that moment was God reminded. 00:22:25 Speaker 4: You don't fight me and I don't need your help. 00:22:30 Speaker 3: Yes, I'm good, I'm good. I got this. 00:22:35 Speaker 4: And when when we calm down, it's something I have anxiety attacks. I one of my biggest things that I struggle with in life is fear. 00:22:45 Speaker 3: Fear of dying. Fear. 00:22:47 Speaker 4: You know that, it's just like I can have an anxiety attack, like at the drop of dying. 00:22:52 Speaker 3: I'm like, yo. And what happens is when I went to counseling for my counselor asked me, what do you do to stop it? 00:22:58 Speaker 4: How do you get from where you are in that moment to the next phase? And I say, I put, I start thinking about something else. I literally take my mind and I don't have all the scientific neurologists sayings that she said, but she says something one part of your brain is it does this, but when you trigger the other side, it actually washes away that fear, that anxiety that you have. So she said, you didn't even know what you were doing, but you were doing exactly as a counselor I would tell you do you have to think on these other things. And when you're in God, we can quote a scripture, we can take our minds back to something that we heard that will give us that peace that surpasses all understanding. So it's not abnormal. But the more we keep reminding ourselves. That's why people have these affirmations on their mirrors, pictures in their homes, because they need to be reminded. 00:23:51 Speaker 5: Of what God said about them daily. 00:23:53 Speaker 4: So that because we can't take this with us. You know, I've never seen a hert sport, but you ho. You know you can't when we gone, were gone. 00:24:03 Speaker 3: But you can enjoy the life you have. 00:24:05 Speaker 4: And sometimes survivor's remorse makes us feel guilty for being able to enjoy what other people can enjoy, so we try to dumb down. 00:24:16 Speaker 3: Oh I got a nice watch, mom, Yep, I got on necklaces. 00:24:19 Speaker 1: Yep. 00:24:20 Speaker 3: This too much, it's too much. 00:24:22 Speaker 2: Yes, I felt that sometimes, I said, Christal, you worked hard for this. 00:24:26 Speaker 5: Is this what you like? 00:24:26 Speaker 1: That's what you like? 00:24:27 Speaker 4: Because you don't even have if people take the time to know you, You don't even have a spirit that says, look at me, I'm flawing. No people are look at you because you're beautful. People are looking at you because you're smile. People are look at you because you illuminate good energy and good vibes. But somebody who's a hater, somebody who's jealous of go, she just wants to see she got on hes that's your mind. Don't project that on me. So we internalize how people feel about us. 00:24:51 Speaker 7: Yeah. 00:24:52 Speaker 4: So I'm glad that you experienced that, even though I know it was uncomfortable, because the next time, you'll know exactly what to do. How And the fact that the young man came you and said what he said, it's just that reminder that Crystal, you earned this, you deserved it. 00:25:06 Speaker 1: And I have to remember that you did. 00:25:08 Speaker 4: And girl, it's about to get crazier. You better get out your system now. 00:25:14 Speaker 8: Yeah, thank you, absolutely, it is I know for me when it comes to like family and friends and success, I've had friends other people were asking well, why could Crystal hasn't put you on? 00:25:30 Speaker 2: You know, like I've had those And I said, well what did you say? And she was like, well, I just don't think that's our friendship. 00:25:36 Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. 00:25:36 Speaker 2: I feel like you support me in other ways, and I was like yeah, and for me, it's like you never asked me to put you on. 00:25:44 Speaker 1: But do you feel like that because even my brother, my brother was like yeah. 00:25:47 Speaker 2: My friend was like you and your sister hasn't bought your house because if my sister was making that money, she would have and I had I brought my brother house, but like this was before and I was just like, I said, and what did you say? And he was like I told And I was like, I don't expect nothing from my sister. And he was like, and she does that, then that's what she does. He was like, but I don't look at it. 00:26:06 Speaker 5: Like, well, if you're obligated. 00:26:08 Speaker 2: You're obligated to do it. Then I was like, so why did you tell me that? Because I feel like you're telling me that this is how you really feel. 00:26:15 Speaker 3: Too, you know, projected it on me. Yeah, you're projecting. 00:26:18 Speaker 4: It's almost like I ain't saying it is what people are saying. 00:26:21 Speaker 3: Which makes you feel guilty to do something. 00:26:24 Speaker 5: Like oh, should I do this for my brother? 00:26:25 Speaker 3: Yeah? 00:26:27 Speaker 4: You know, because people we just live in society and it's sad to say, but we live in a society where people don't want to work for anything. They don't like I mean, people are still using the pandemic as an excuse not to go back to work. 00:26:40 Speaker 1: Yes, we've moved on. 00:26:43 Speaker 3: We don't want to work. 00:26:45 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:26:46 Speaker 3: And I believe that you get what you. 00:26:49 Speaker 5: Put into a thing is what you get out of a thing. 00:26:52 Speaker 4: So Crystal, I cannot expect anything from you if I didn't put anything in it to help you get what you got. 00:26:59 Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, And. 00:27:01 Speaker 3: Then I can't project it on you. 00:27:02 Speaker 4: I have to genuinely be like yo, he's see what happens is you get more when you do less. Like I used to say a the time, like the way to get anything from me, He don't ask me for nothing. 00:27:14 Speaker 2: Let me tell you something right now, Tyler Perry is the most giving person and I see people coming him all the time. I need this or this whatever. I don't want nothing from that man. But he's just that's just that's just who he is. He's done more for me than anybody in this world has ever done. 00:27:32 Speaker 1: And it's just not always monetary. 00:27:34 Speaker 2: Talking about even like that. 00:27:36 Speaker 1: It gives me. 00:27:37 Speaker 2: But the only thing I ever asked him or told him was like, Tyler, this is what I want to do. And it wasn't until after five years of styling him. Sure, but that's that's a prime example of like you get more and you don't. I don't consciously I want not going to ask something for nothing because I want to get something, you know, or I just never wanted him to feel like this is another. 00:27:57 Speaker 4: But but you know what probably pricked this hard. I can't speak on his behalf, but people like him who are successful, who are rich, who are just highly sought after, everybody wants something. 00:28:07 Speaker 1: Everybody wants something. 00:28:08 Speaker 4: So when you run across a fresh person, a fresh spirit, fresh soul that can handle being around it, but not making you feel like I need something from you, they never forget, Crystal. 00:28:22 Speaker 3: They never forget. 00:28:24 Speaker 4: It may not be when you think, when you least expected, they never forget. And I believe that's the way you The way up is down, that's the way of The lower you are, the more humble you are, the more you'll be exalted. And it's like I told somebody other that said, yo. 00:28:46 Speaker 5: I don't chase money. 00:28:48 Speaker 4: No, I chase opportunity, and I chase relationships. Like when I'm in a room with somebody great, I don't have to be seen heard, I just want to be there because I'm gonna get something out this room that I can use to help me. Like when you build relationships with people, relationships are way more valuable than money. 00:29:07 Speaker 5: Money expires. 00:29:09 Speaker 4: A good relationship when honored, when respected, can live a lifetime. 00:29:15 Speaker 3: Yes, that will. 00:29:17 Speaker 4: Produce money, that will produce opportunities. 00:29:20 Speaker 2: So when you're money to go get it by yourself. 00:29:24 Speaker 4: You know, Like, I'm at a place with my life where I'm not well. I'm not going to say this because I am rich in faith, but I'm not a person who's like, oh I got this, I got this, I got this. I'm not that God, but I know I'm blessed beyond measure, and I do things now based. 00:29:38 Speaker 3: Off how I feel, not based off my bills. 00:29:41 Speaker 4: Yes yes, yes, Like would it kill me if I lended my gift my talent to my friend and not charge. 00:29:49 Speaker 3: You a dime? 00:29:50 Speaker 4: Because I know that when people forget you, God always remembers. So we are products of God, like people are your resource. 00:30:04 Speaker 5: God is your source. 00:30:07 Speaker 3: So when you get people the power that you feel like I need you for. 00:30:09 Speaker 4: This, I need you for that, I need you for this, then that's what manipulation. No over you, using you, over working you, underpanding you, all that comes into play. But when you understand I want this opportunity, but God is my source, so I'll never go with it. 00:30:24 Speaker 3: I'll never lack you because He got me. Yep, you know. So those are the things. So I love the fact that you were. 00:30:32 Speaker 5: Able to be. 00:30:35 Speaker 3: Around the success, see other people smile, push them and. 00:30:42 Speaker 5: And all along. 00:30:42 Speaker 4: You got this dream on the inside of you that you kept to yourself. It was time God created the opportunity. You maximize it. And here's the key. When it came you was ready. You didn't get ready. 00:30:54 Speaker 1: You was already ready. And I wouldn't have been ready if pray this, I. 00:30:58 Speaker 4: Want this, I want that, I want this, and when if somebody dropped it on your lap, you wouldn't know what to do with. 00:31:03 Speaker 2: No, It's like right, But everything that God put me through in that journey, when it came, even those years with Tyler, I was learning how to manage business. 00:31:11 Speaker 1: I was learned. 00:31:12 Speaker 2: No, like literally, I'm hearing the conversation like okay, this here it is. I learned how to move in these crowds. He's like, Crystal, you can't move like this. You need to get your home and a trust. You need to have security. 00:31:21 Speaker 1: Why are you walking out as the door too? 00:31:24 Speaker 2: Like you can't be going everywhere by yourself now, you know what I'm saying. Even everything, He's like, why are you doing that? No, this is what you need to do. I'm like, okay, even. 00:31:32 Speaker 1: Getting this house, I wasn't. 00:31:34 Speaker 2: I was like looking at like houses and teap know yeah, and he was like it was still like expensive, but it was like Tyler was like, what are you doing? He was like, I know, you feel like you just got in the like just got one foot in the door, but you're already through the door. 00:31:51 Speaker 1: And he was like, go get the house you want. 00:31:54 Speaker 2: And he was like, because what's going to happen. You're gonna be just like me, he said, I went and got this house. Okay, this is what I can afford. I'm not gonna go broke if I get this house. 00:32:00 Speaker 1: He said. In three years later, I was like, why am I in this house? 00:32:03 Speaker 2: And then I gotta go sell this and then get the one I really want when you should already got the one you want. Because God's going to keep providing. He's going to keep he said, it's going to keep coming Crystal. He was like, look at your trajectory, and I look at it. Since I started working at the studio every year since twenty twelve, my life has gotten better and better and better, tripling, doublin, quadrupling times over. And even to piggyback off what you said about going down to come up when as the team that came about, someone went to went up to Tom was like, you're. 00:32:35 Speaker 1: Really gonna give Chrysal her own show? 00:32:36 Speaker 2: He said, that girl sacrificed five years of her life for me and never said a word. You think I'm not gonna bless her like And that's the real thing. 00:32:44 Speaker 3: That's the thing though. So you're blessed. 00:32:47 Speaker 4: But then people wonder why is he still blessing because it's blessing people. 00:32:52 Speaker 1: Yes, And that's another thing I learned. You got to bless people. 00:32:56 Speaker 5: Got to like we are blessed to be a blessing. 00:33:00 Speaker 4: That doesn't mean I have to give everything I have away, right, That means I create opportunities for you to come up. So it's not like Christ should do this for me. No, what have you done for yourself? God even helps those who help themselves. 00:33:12 Speaker 1: He does, he does. 00:33:13 Speaker 4: You know, you make one step, but I'll make two. That's God waits on you to do something. Eight of that works is dead. 00:33:19 Speaker 3: You have to do. 00:33:19 Speaker 4: Something for before I get behind it. You know, it's just it's life a label. You got to give me a product before I push your song. Yes, it's always you have to do something. But when it comes to people wanting something from you, it's like I don't have to do nothing. 00:33:35 Speaker 5: You should. You should give it to me. 00:33:37 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:33:38 Speaker 2: No, I worked hard for this and it had needs you to do the same. You're not gonna appreciate it if I do give it you want. You will not because I wouldn't appreciate it if somebody just gave it to me. 00:33:46 Speaker 3: Yeah. So I'm so. 00:33:48 Speaker 4: I'm so happy that through this journey of learning and growing and becoming successful, that. 00:33:54 Speaker 5: You're still a student. 00:33:56 Speaker 4: Yes, oh yeah, we never we never get to a place where we stopped learning. 00:33:59 Speaker 2: Learnce and Tyler, Like, I watched this man he's a billionaire and still goes and sits for seventeen hours behind some cameras making directing movies and television shows. 00:34:10 Speaker 5: Because most people look like I'll pay you to do it. 00:34:13 Speaker 2: Yeah, find someone else to do right for someone else with your question. 00:34:20 Speaker 1: I'm gonna be in my Buckingham Palace. 00:34:22 Speaker 4: Yes, And it's like but when you're hungry, yeah, and you remember. 00:34:27 Speaker 3: I say this thing. Be a tad says is say this thing all the time, and we laugh. 00:34:30 Speaker 5: But it's it's so true. 00:34:32 Speaker 9: When I think, I think wow, when I think, I think, when I think about where I came from, when I think about I'm not qualified to be here. 00:34:42 Speaker 5: When I think. 00:34:43 Speaker 4: About I was in my own way, I've done things. I've hurt people, people hurt me. I've done so much that should that should I should even be here. But when I think about that, I think that's what keeps Tyler behind the camera. That's what keeps you grinding, That's what keeps me going. Because when we think, we think so it's always about if you can just remember, you'll never get comfortable. 00:35:11 Speaker 1: Yep, I don't. 00:35:13 Speaker 3: You'll never get comfortable. 00:35:14 Speaker 1: And want to learn new skills. 00:35:17 Speaker 3: Oh my god. 00:35:18 Speaker 4: When I look at Lebron James from Afar, it's like twenty years he's still playing. 00:35:23 Speaker 3: You don't have to know. 00:35:25 Speaker 4: He has businesses, he has everything, but he remembers where he came from. And when you remember, you never stop going wow, because it's now It's like, now, it's not just about you, Crystal, No, it's not. You have people and you have a team that depends on you, that that eat because of you, that have that take care of that, families because of you, and you have business partners that bald with you. 00:35:51 Speaker 3: It's like, man, come on, man, we can't stop. 00:35:53 Speaker 5: We can't get comfortable. 00:35:54 Speaker 4: We want time to be we don't have time to be dealing. I can't be low calling me to be higher. 00:36:01 Speaker 1: Yes, so. 00:36:03 Speaker 3: That's why. 00:36:04 Speaker 4: That's why I just I'm just so grateful and I'm so thankful because I never forget where I came from. 00:36:08 Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that. 00:36:10 Speaker 8: I think when I think, I think, I'm definitely say it's simple. 00:36:14 Speaker 3: I love that. 00:36:15 Speaker 4: That's why how do you stay so when I think I think, I just remember where I came from, and I'm so grateful. 00:36:21 Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's all you need. Come on, man, somebody show. 00:36:25 Speaker 5: You, Crystal. This is where you grew up. 00:36:28 Speaker 4: This is what you should have, This is what other people in your family have, This is what they settle for. God gave you an opportunity. Do you think I don't want to go back. I'm not I'm not hating. I don't want to go back. 00:36:42 Speaker 3: I love it here. I love it here, and so that's that's it's simple. 00:36:49 Speaker 1: This is so good. 00:36:55 Speaker 2: We're gonna get to one of my favorite parts of the show. It's called positive outcomes. For one of our listeners right in and ask us something. So we're go giving them advice. 00:37:02 Speaker 3: Let's go all right, we probably gave it to them. 00:37:05 Speaker 2: You're right, right, and thus it happens a lot of times, like we actually touched on this. 00:37:09 Speaker 1: This one says, hey, chrs. 00:37:10 Speaker 2: So first, I'd like to say that I'm extremely proud of you and everything you're doing out here. 00:37:13 Speaker 1: You are truly a queen. 00:37:15 Speaker 2: I always said that you inspire that you inspire how I carry myself. I'm a professional singer and I've done a lot of background singing for likes of John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Pala Bell, just name a few, Okay, okay, yeah, m hmm. 00:37:29 Speaker 3: It's good. 00:37:30 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:37:31 Speaker 2: Just because I work with some really big names, my family thinks that I am famous and I have a lot of money. 00:37:36 Speaker 1: I know what you mean. 00:37:37 Speaker 2: Yes, therefore they ask me for money and expect tickets to all the shows. 00:37:42 Speaker 1: How do I know you. 00:37:44 Speaker 4: Wait a minute, you're on my street, young lady. 00:37:49 Speaker 2: How do I make them understand that this success is not is not theirs, but it's mine and that if I can help them, then I will, but. 00:37:57 Speaker 1: They should remove their sense of entire. 00:38:02 Speaker 2: Baby girl, my goodness, I was you know what that happening? When I started like working closely with Tyler, like I would get calls by play, and when he does the plays, they wanted tickets, and like I had connection, I could get like four tickets per show. But I would start getting those and then people like, oh, well you around Tyler. I know you getting this same thing with my brother. So I would tell you definitely let them know hey, because a lot of people have a misconception that just because you're on TV or on stage that you have a lot of money. 00:38:37 Speaker 1: And that's not always the case. 00:38:39 Speaker 2: And be honest with them and say, hey, this is the real because sometimes what they're seeing is not what it really is. I would say, be honest with them, say hey, this is what I'm really making, Like I don't have all that money, and what I do have, I got to take care of me. I'm not there yet where I can take care of everybody else. And I've been in that position where I like, I hope that one day I can, but if there were seasons in my life where I wasn't there, so I would just be honest with them and let them know exactly where you are. And when it comes to the entitlement, I've dealt with that too, and that's like one of my biggest pet piece is when people are entitled to what I have going on, and I would tell people that makes me uncomfortable. 00:39:13 Speaker 1: I don't like when you do that. 00:39:14 Speaker 2: I've had to have those conversations with family and my friends as I continue to ascend. So I would just be honest, you know, I would just say, keep it honest with everybody, sweetie. 00:39:24 Speaker 3: Yes, I love that. 00:39:26 Speaker 5: I love that. 00:39:27 Speaker 4: If I could add to that, I would say people have to learn how to manage your expectations. You know, people have these expectations of you and they're really unfair because the moment I don't meet your expectation, I'm already feeling. 00:39:44 Speaker 5: So where you set the bar on where. 00:39:47 Speaker 4: Your expectations are, yeah, no matter how high low they are. And then the moment I do anything that doesn't line up what your expectations are I'm funny, I'm different, I'm changing. Yes, So people have to learn how to manage the expectations. The other thing I would say is if there's not a covenant relationship, then you're not entitled. 00:40:07 Speaker 5: Don't call me for no. 00:40:08 Speaker 4: Tickets if we ain't talked in three weeks, if we ain't talked in three months, hello, like I have. 00:40:12 Speaker 3: I've been on tour and people. 00:40:13 Speaker 5: Ask me for tickets. I ain't talked to in years. 00:40:15 Speaker 4: I'm like, what gives you the unmitigated gaul to feel like you can pick up your phone and call me and ask me when we. 00:40:21 Speaker 5: Don't even talk. Literally and real. 00:40:24 Speaker 4: Friends, real family, people who love you, support you. They don't mind paying. They don't mind paying when they really support you. Like every like like nothing is given, everything is earned. So do not carry the weight of somebody else's expectations. 00:40:44 Speaker 1: That's good. 00:40:45 Speaker 3: They do not. 00:40:46 Speaker 4: Feel like you're obligated to do anything for anybody that. 00:40:51 Speaker 3: You're not. 00:40:52 Speaker 4: You're not like again, like if they love you, girl, I'm coming to the concert. 00:40:57 Speaker 3: I have no money. 00:40:57 Speaker 4: I'm in the nose, believe, but I'm at then I might something might move to my like oh, I'm not. 00:41:02 Speaker 3: Somebody moved you down. 00:41:02 Speaker 1: Ye, I'll get you backstage out. 00:41:04 Speaker 4: Yeah, because people want to be around people who support them. I'm a friend that's on tour right now. Not only am I giving my time, I give, but I bought tickets. I didn't even use me to bless somebody else. 00:41:14 Speaker 1: I bought tics. I couldn't even go. 00:41:15 Speaker 2: I said, I'm still gonna get tickets just so I support. 00:41:17 Speaker 1: Because that's that's what you do. 00:41:19 Speaker 4: That's what you're doing. The Crystal started to clothing line and started something. 00:41:23 Speaker 3: I'm going by it. 00:41:24 Speaker 4: I propagated even wed, but I'm gonna buy and bless my wife, bless my daughter, blessed somebody else because friends support friends. So again, don't get caught up in that thing where you're trying to match the expectations. Ask them to adjust theirs. 00:41:39 Speaker 1: Yep, that's good. You got that, sweetie, all right, I love it. That was good. All Right. 00:41:44 Speaker 2: We're gonna do what I'm going through and what I'm growing and for me, oh lord, this is a good one, especially when it comes to what we just talked about. I am going through accepting where I am my life and honestly controlling my my expectations of where I should be and try not to community and get. 00:42:10 Speaker 1: Ahead of myself. 00:42:12 Speaker 2: And then I'm growing through understanding that I'm in a season where it's okay to be about me, you know, because you spend so many years your life just folks on everybody else, given, given, given, given, and it's like, Okay, this this year, I gotta I gotta get. 00:42:28 Speaker 1: My house in order. 00:42:28 Speaker 2: I got to make sure crystals good and not not just the house, my house, my soul. 00:42:34 Speaker 1: So knowing that I'm growing through that, knowing that it's. 00:42:37 Speaker 2: Okay to focus on you and it's not selfish because it's not saying it's all about me. I'm still making sure people are good, but there are some areas in my life where I'd be like, no, I can't do that. I need to do this for me right now so. 00:42:49 Speaker 1: That I can puarantine you absolutely. So that's what I'm going through, what I'm growing. 00:42:53 Speaker 5: I love that. 00:42:53 Speaker 4: I love that because you can't be good for anybody else until you're good for yourself, you know. And you're a weird season too, because you have to. 00:43:00 Speaker 7: Be very careful, prayerful, and watchful because from relationships, whether it be friends, family, even men because beautiful, you're single, and everybody want to be with Crystal. 00:43:17 Speaker 4: They they ain't ready, That's what they are. They ain't ready because if you ain't bringing more than what I already got, and you can't do for me what I've already done for myself, you had no value. 00:43:30 Speaker 5: So you have to understand. It's just a weird spaceship. 00:43:33 Speaker 4: But I think, like you said, working on your house and your soul, it gives you that desernment and that foresight to see up the street and around the corner. You know, for me, what I'm going through and growing through is I'm in a weird place. I don't know what this is go air, but I'm either I'm turning fifty. 00:43:54 Speaker 5: Or I'm already fifty. But this year I'll be fifty. 00:44:00 Speaker 4: And for me, the fear of getting older. Grateful that I'm alive, but the fear of getting older and still being relevant. The enemy has trying to plague me with that, like getting older this is a young man's game, and it's like, well, I ain't not here trying to take off my clothes. I ain't trying to take off my shirt and same you know, you know I still can do what I do at a high level because I stay, I work on my craft, I work hard at it, and so and so forth. So that's one thing that I'm going through. 00:44:31 Speaker 5: At the same time, I have two older kids. 00:44:34 Speaker 4: I have a twenty nine year old daughter and a twenty five year son, and that relationship has always been strained for so many different reasons. Whether it's what we've been talk about pretty much all day. People can look at your life and think that you have more than what you have, or their perception of your success is bigger than what it actually is. Yeah, So that expectation of if you did this for me, if you did this for me, then. 00:45:05 Speaker 3: I could be I could be here, I can get there. 00:45:08 Speaker 4: It's like, but you're grown now, and I've done my part as a father, and the guilt of the guilt that I allowed people to put on me because I didn't do it the way they felt like I could do it without understanding why I went through what I went through. It's been a strange place, Like my daughter just got married, Wow, and I was. 00:45:31 Speaker 5: In a weird place. 00:45:32 Speaker 3: I was like, do I go? 00:45:34 Speaker 4: I was like, Okay, I'm going because relationships been so weird when I say, do I go? Like I wanted to go, but I didn't know if I would be received. I didn't know what the expectation would. 00:45:41 Speaker 3: Be, but it was. I went, and then I came home. That's I went that Saturday. 00:45:49 Speaker 4: I came home that Saturday night, and then that Sunday went to church and I was at the Ultra Crown all day, right besides you, because it was almost like God was saying, you won't carry that guilt anymore, you won't carry that shame anymore. You won't have to give it an explanation for what I know you did, right, you know. And so growing through that and releasing myself from the guilt this shame has been a process because sometimes we hold on the things that God has already thrown away. Jesus, Yeah, it's like, oh yeah, what about again. It's almost like this, like oh you're about that. Yeah, I got you, but this time it's gone for good. It's almost like, my that's my interpretation of how God sees us. We come back to him stuff he's already forgot about. He has to recall it because he's already released us. We haven't released our said, And that's the that's what I'm growing through and I feel so free. I feel so liberated because it's like yoel, like it was the one thing that I didn't release myself from and now that I've released that, now I'm out of the way and God can do the other things that he wants to do in my life. 00:47:09 Speaker 3: So that's what I'm growing through and going through it. 00:47:12 Speaker 1: That's so good. Thank you for sharing that. 00:47:14 Speaker 3: Absolutely, that's so good. 00:47:16 Speaker 2: Okay, So we do keep it blank, sweetie. Just stay stay low, chiller, stay humble, you know, and God will exalt you. 00:47:52 Speaker 5: You know, you don't have to. 00:47:53 Speaker 3: Tell everybody what you got. You gotta tell aybody all the. 00:47:55 Speaker 5: Moves you're making. 00:47:57 Speaker 4: Just chill, you know, stay humble, stay low, and because like I told you, what's coming is better than what's being. 00:48:04 Speaker 5: So if you just stay humble, it's easy. 00:48:07 Speaker 3: So stay humble, sweetie. 00:48:08 Speaker 1: Stay humble, Sweetie. 00:48:09 Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, I oh, I have been blessed the way I've been blessed.
