They beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game three of the NL Division Series eight to two. Kyle Schwarber brings the Phillies life. Let's discuss it. It's time for the park's first pitch. Speaker 2: I just felt like, and we've been talking about it, the big three have to come through, and they certainly did.

Speaker 3: I mean the Big three was what seven for sixteen or seven for thirteen or whatever.

Speaker 2: They were like five five RBIs five runs score whatever.

Speaker 3: All the numbers were like quality numbers. They produced runs.

Speaker 2: That was huge for the Phillies to get the big boys involved. The approach that they have is exactly the approach that they have when they have success. And really impressed by the fact that they got themselves in the hitters counts. They hit the ball all over the field, a lot of contact through the middle of the field. Almost all the big hits came through the middle field. Other than the home run home runs by Schwarber, they were pulled and crushed, one really high and one really far. And I just feel like that's the approach they need to maintain over the next couple of games hopefully.

Speaker 4: Yeah, it was really fitting that Schwarber was the guy that got him going, and I agree with you. You could really feel an exhale em and eight from that dugout because they had just been pressing like crazy. Dating back to the last couple previous postseasons, they've been really their own worst enemy with the way they press, especially the guys they lean on the most. But hey, Schwarber's done all year, carried this team. Why not him be the guy that kind of, you know, put the pads on the chest and fire up the electrical charge. And you know, and the other thing is they're built on home runs. I know, it's great to see them us in the middle of the field. And you know, Harper didn't try to do too much. He had some good at bats, but it's indisputable when they hit home runs. When any team hits home runs, but when this team hits home runs, they win. And like in their last fifteen postseason games, when they get to two or more home runs in a game, they're fifteen and all. So Schwober electrified that team, got them going, and the manager pushed the manager. You know, in the last couple of postseasons, you can look at a lot of his moves and say, yes.

Speaker 4: I think baseball people really understand the logic of a lot of his moves, but a lot of them just haven't paid dividends because the athlete hasn't executed, and the manager takes the heat for that. But here, in a must win, do or die Game three, the manager pushed some significant buttons and they worked. The athletes made them work, and I think it was a obviously, I don't think.

Speaker 4: It was a huge win for the team, and it was a huge win personally for the skipper, and I cannot wait for Game four. Christopher Sanchez Tyler glasnow a guy they have you know early. I remember in April they knocked him around pretty good. So the Phillies have life thanks to the emergency responder, Kyle Schwarber and.

Speaker 1: A couple of things. I just wanted some of the fun numbers from Schwarber's home run for those that don't know. First of all, you know he wasn't an over twenty two slump dating back to the regular season, but that home run. I'm sure a lot of people have the numbers memorized right now because they've been every one the broadcast a million times but it left his bat at one hundred and seventeen point two miles an hour, traveled four hundred and fifty five feet. Second hardest home run he's hit in his career. You guys remember the first one dark San Diego, Right yeah, the U Darbish Game one of the twenty twenty two and LCS. That one left his bat at one hundred and nineteen point seven miles an hour and traveled four hundred and eighty eight feet, which which really struck me last night because that ball literally cleared the bleachers at Dodger Stadium.

Speaker 1: And Sorver's home run at Pecko Park in twenty twenty two thirty three feet further than that one based off of off a stack ass but big time performance by a big time player who is their big time MVP candidate this season. Kyle Schwarber's two home runs in Game three gave him twenty three postseason home runs in his career. Only Manny Ramirez with twenty nine and Jose l two Bay with twenty seven have hit more in Major League Baseball history. So just a massive massive performance by him, and like you said, Jim, they have life. So before the game, a few of us were in Rob Thompson's office and talking to him and we are what's the mood like in all of this? And he said, I asked him. I said, well, there's this clip going on. I know you're not on social media, but there's a going a round of Game four of the two thousand and four alcs of itself. Kevin Malar talking to Dan Shaughnessy from the Boston Globe. And as you recall, Dan Shaughnessy in the ball Austin Globe after the Yankees took that three zero league called them a bunch of frauds.

Speaker 4: I was covering that series, and I grew up reading the Boston Globe and I love reading Dan shumc. I remember that column like it was yesterday. I'm sorry, interrupted going.

Speaker 1: No, that's great, and and Kevin Maler is talking to Shawn to see, very calm, very kind of upbeat. He goes, hey, I'm telling you, don't let us win today. Do not let us win today because we got Pete going tomorrow and then we got Chill going on whatever game six, and so I asked him, I said, you do you kind of do you know that clip? He said, oh, yeah, I know, And of course you know he was with the Yankees in two thousand and four, but he said he feels the same way about this team. And as you said, guys, Christopher Sanchez in game four, he pitched very well in Game one, didn't win, but he pitched very well. You si on candidate, and then you have Hayzulizardo. If they can win game four. He have Hazuizardo pitch very well in game five and it's amazing how things turn when the offense producers. So if they can get that going, you net as Rubin says, you never know, You never know one thing.

Speaker 4: I just want to make a point. I Rob and Todd your story was really brilliant. Enjoyed reading that. But you mentioned how Rob brought the lads together and said, uh, and I mentioned that we all think they've been pressing like like crazy, and Rob said, don't try harder, trust harder. And I thought that was a brilliant way to put it. And it almost reminded me of Fred Schiro writing on the blackboard. When today we walked together tomorrow. Obviously, the Steaks are a lot different. They were in the finals, the flyers in those days trying to win a Stanley Cup. Here you're just trying to stay alive. But I thought those words were really sage and I thought I thought it was great wisdom. Rob us of the word trust a lot, and I think that's the number one currency any manager can have is trust with his clubhouse. And they trusted each other and they made it happen a huge, huge win. But I just kind of loved that quote from Rob Thompson. Don't try harder, trust harder.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean a lot of people call me a Thompson apologist. I still think he's one of the best managers for a lot of different reasons. I love the way he goes about it. I love his demeanor. He's steady. That's the most important part of being a leader is the steadiness, and he's steady. He believes in his players. They know that he trusts them, and you know, you're hopeful that they just play the type of baseball that they can because when they do, you get results like you got last night.

And you know how you've been taking some heat for Rob Thompson's moves because he made a move, announced a move after Game two that had us we were sitting there. I think we said it on this show. I don't understand what's going on here? Where is Ranger Suarez? Why is it? You know there's confusion even until up until first pitch yesterday? Why are they starting Aaron Nola in Game three? It's it's it seems super risky, super risky, Aaron Nola. Aaron Nola, I gotta find this stat he's His six point zero one ERA is the second highest regular season ERA for a pitcher starting an elimination game in postseason history Oliver Perez from the Mets, who was actually at the ballpark for Game three, had a six five to five ERA in two thousand and six when he started Game seven of the two thousand and six NL Championship Series. But Aaron Nola starts Game three seven point nine to four ERA in the first inning this season six like I said, six point zero one ERA in the regular season this season. And he goes out and he pitches two scoreless innings, throwing showing his best fastball that has had in well over a year, two years really, and just pitched his butt off. They hand the ball to Rangers Suarez, as was the plan, so he faced Shoeyo Tani faced him his second time up. He pitched great hiccup at the beginning. But Rob Thompson's plan Big Gamble worked Yeah.

Speaker 2: I mean, listen, I was curious as to why. Even so, even though it worked out, I was still curious as to why Ranger was not being used. In the first couple of games, he had opportunities to pitch.

Speaker 2: I know he had not pitched out of the bullpen a lot lately, but he's done it in the past.

Speaker 3: But this move that he made worked out great. The players performed.

Speaker 2: This is a This is sort of part and parcel of what Rob Thompson's about. He trusts his players, and his players, particularly in this case, Aaron Nola.

Speaker 2: He knew that Aaron would not get caught up in the moment. He knew that Aaron Nola would throw strikes. He ended up having a tremendous first inning. After the mishappened center field by Brandon Marsh, he comes back and he gets the punch out on ti Oscar Hernandez. He gets out of that inning. That was a huge inning as far as momentum swing. I think he just did a hell of a job. And then you know, first pitch home run by Tommy Edmond. I'm like, don't they know that Tommy Emma is just dead red fastball and he throws a fastball.

Speaker 2: But then after that, again Ranger Swarz, another guy who doesn't get caught up in the moment, ends up pitching his ass off and giving the Phillies a chance to win.

Speaker 2: And again I'll still question whether or not these guys why they didn't use Ranger Suarez in the first couple of games.

Speaker 3: But I guess this is one of the reasons why they felt like they.

Speaker 2: Needed a bunch of innings out of them, and perhaps he wasn't going to be able to do that if he had pitched in some of those you know, one of those those first two games.

Speaker 1: Sounds like the plan for sure, and then we kind of saw it almost happen. Was they in a perfect world, if everything went well, it was going to be Aaron Nola. They wanted him to go the first time through, so maybe he could have gone three if they didn't get some traffic on the basis, but Nola to swore as and then maybe just to Johan Duran. Doran was ready to he was warming up at the seventh inning, he was getting as he was going to get a six out save, and Dave Roberts because the Phillies piled on there in the eighth inning, Dave Roberts after the game, basis, Eh, you know, it would have been nice to get Deuran into that game tonight. It would have been nice if we could have held him there and got in the game. Because now talking to him after the game, he's like, oh, yeah, good, I'm ready to go for Game four now. So and that's that's a huge thing for the Phillies. So now they can if Sanchez can go seven or six and two thirds and they can get another out, maybe they can have Doran go out there and go to two innings night. Maybe not, we'll see. But that's a big, big, big development for the Phillies.

Speaker 4: Good question, because they would not have had Duran for for Game four if he has to go out there and pitch, you know, two winnings and a meat grinder.

Speaker 4: Huge, and it was huge because you know, they they struggled in the middle. They had a couple of big chances and that you know with men on base, and they did not deliver, and you scratching your head thinking, oh boy, I hope this doesn't come back to bite them.

Speaker 4: Once again, Kyle Schwarber helped helped kind of kind of put some air in that lead and give him some distance. But you know, Ranger was really good keeping that tight. So those those two innings did not come back to bite them. Nola was really good. You could just see Rob was eliminating the weak underbelly of the bullpen, the setup area.

Speaker 4: So you know, Nola essentially was a two innings setup man for for for Ranger, and Ranger was going to take him to Duran and then uh just uh it was. It was like symphony. It all it had a plan and it all worked well thought out and well executed by the the lads in in. I was gonna say pinstripes, but I guess they had light blue on.

Then when they left those two situations second and third nobody out and first and second nobody out and could not score runs, I'm thinking to myself, uh oh, this could be over. And then Ranger Tuarez quelled everything by making his pigeon making his pitches. I also want to spread a little love to one gentleman who's having a hell of a series so far, and that's JT. Real Muto. JT real Muto is what buy for thirteen or something like that. I'm not sure exactly what the numbers are. Big home run, huge home run to put him up for to one, give him a little breathing room, and.

Speaker 2: When Kershaw was left in there to die, I don't know why, but he was left out there to die because I guess Dave Roberts didn't one respect him, but number two didn't feel like he wanted to use another picture in there.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it's uh, Jimmy you mentioned. My last thought on this is that, you know, you mentioned Nola being a guess two inning set up man. That was kind of what they told Aaron Nola to be, you know, Caleb Cotham before the game and jt Real moved it before the game, told Nola like, we're gonna kind of treat you like a closer, like don't necessarily empty the tank. We want you to throw strikes.

I remember kind of like gasping for breath when Brandon Phillips hits that dribbler off the first baseline and Ruiz goes up and goes to his knees and now he's got to throw it over Brandon Phillips. Such a great, great play, had just touch and feel and finesse to it for a guy who's you know, usually a brute, you know, Carlos Ruiz just a great player. A great night for Roy and the Phillies. And I still have my scorecard from that night and the Brandon Phillips at bat. I think he was a leadoff guy. The Brandon Phillips at bat, the block is blank. I'd never filled it in because Ruiz makes the play and I make a b line for the elevator because I want to get downstairs. So I never filled in that final square. I was filled in in my mind two three. And you know, many times, many times I've looked at it and wanted to fill it in, and I said, nope, I'm leva just the way it is.

In his mind, he was kind of preparing for all different scenarios, and in one scenario, he was preparing for the ball to hit off of Brandon Phillips' left shoulder and maybe ricochet toward him so he could somehow catch the ball. Because he's like, this ball might hit to shoulder. I have to be ready to somehow stop it and get to the bag before Brandon Phillips does. But obviously Chutch made it. Made an unbelievable throw.

Speaker 2: Relationships between the manager and the player are so important in this day and age, the true relation and connection. It's one of the reasons why Charlie Manuel had so much success because he could relate to the players extremely more hitters than pitchers, but still related to the players really, really well. He had that presence in the clubhouse where he could we can have a conversation and at the end of the day know that that guy trusts them and vice versa. So I think that's one of the beauties of what Rob Thompson brings to the table. You can talk about all the strategies, but if the players don't perform and don't do their thing, doesn't really matter what kind of strategy you have.

But they've done a great job on him. They're pitchers, and when he's in the batter's box, who do you think is in the outfield tonight against Glass on the right hander, Boyd.

Speaker 2: I'll be surprised if they change up the I'm surprised if they change up the lineup. I don't think that the center. I don't think Vader's ready. The one thing I will say about this is that if they have the same approach that they had against Yoshinobu, Yamamoto Yamamoto, if they have the same approach against Glass now, they'll do damage because similarly, Yamamoto throws a split out of the zone and if he can lay off that and get into hitters counts, Tyler glassnow is gonna have to throw you a pitch to hit. Tyler Glass now is a little let's just say he's a little shaky when it comes to tight situations and he can get really wild, and if you let him get wild, you can do the same sort of damage you did against U Yamamoto.
