Former front office executive with Washington and Philadelphia. Please welcome our good buddy, Lewis Riddick. 00:00:20 Speaker 2: What's up, guys? How a nice Dan Patrick? 00:00:26 Speaker 3: Hollri sir, we'll still this down here. How about that hell to pit? 00:00:33 Speaker 4: All right? Look at you? You got all kinds of gear. You came in looking like shaft. 00:00:40 Speaker 5: You know what, I figured I didn't want to wear my typical Lulu Lemon and you know, I said, you know what for my guy DP, I'm here in my city. 00:00:49 Speaker 2: Okay, here where you know where I I just spent some really good years. 00:00:53 Speaker 4: Got your leather jacket up. 00:00:54 Speaker 2: You know what? 00:00:55 Speaker 5: This this is one of my You know, I bought this at an airport, right. I bought this at the Newark airport. They had they they helped They've opened they opened some high end like shops. There was like a Boss a Boss clothing store and I was in there like six thirty in the morning. They were just pulling the gates up and I was like, give me that coat. And the guy was like we're not open. I was like, give me that coat, and I bought it. 00:01:17 Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, and now my wife is like, you wear that thing everywhere? 00:01:20 Speaker 3: Yes, look like you could have been in jobasy. 00:01:23 Speaker 5: You never know, man, this bald head and stuff. Yeah, I am dating myself a little bit. 00:01:28 Speaker 4: How you feeling good? 00:01:31 Speaker 2: Just tired? You know, it's it's. 00:01:33 Speaker 5: There's so much emotion from last night. I mean that crowd was ridiculous. Three hundred thousand people. Are you kidding me? You work so long, Dan to get ready for this, you know, you you basically it's something that I started doing back in September. And then the night comes and goes so fast, but you're so locked in for three four hours that you want when you get back to your hotel. 00:01:54 Speaker 2: I mean, I'm you're just exhausted, and I just I mean. 00:01:56 Speaker 5: I took a shower, fell right asleep, and today's even longer. This is the draft is one of the coolest things that the NFL's got going. 00:02:04 Speaker 4: All right, How surprise? Where did your surprise begin? 00:02:08 Speaker 2: Oh? 00:02:08 Speaker 5: Man? I think surprise wise, and I think there's no question that Ty Simpson pick probably caught everyone off guard. 00:02:14 Speaker 2: It did. Not to be honest with you catch me off guard. I talked to his father. 00:02:21 Speaker 5: January February, and he was trying to decide if he wanted to go back to school because Miami. He wanted him to hit the transfer portal and come down the quarrel gable. 00:02:28 Speaker 4: Yeah, six and a half million dollars. 00:02:29 Speaker 5: And he was told at the time, He's like, hey, man, you need your son needs to declare he's going to go in the first round. And he stuck to it, and the team that quite honestly really liked him the most picked him. 00:02:42 Speaker 2: Yeah. 00:02:42 Speaker 4: But I can like the player, I don't like the pick. I don't like taking him that high. Yeah, I want to know. There had to be some intel, and this felt this is a less snead draft pick. This is because if I looked at the body language you've Sean. People have been looking at that that Yeah didn't sound Yeah, it looked. 00:03:02 Speaker 5: It looked like Sean was sitting there and going you know, I could have used a bunch of other positions other than quarterback, but that's what Less's job is. Less His job is take care of the football team those short and long term. 00:03:11 Speaker 4: I thought Rabel looked more comfortable in front of the microphone than Sean McVay did last night. 00:03:16 Speaker 2: I'm not touching that. 00:03:21 Speaker 4: Somebody had to want Ty Simpson to go up that high. 00:03:26 Speaker 3: It was less there's no other team. 00:03:29 Speaker 5: Well, you know what, I I don't I don't necessarily believe that. I don't think if he was there with no I think I think sometimes from what I was told, Pittsburgh was not gonna take it. 00:03:40 Speaker 2: Regardless if he was there. 00:03:41 Speaker 4: They need the offensive, right, they. 00:03:43 Speaker 2: Weren't gonna take him. 00:03:43 Speaker 5: They weren't gonna they They kind of I think they felt a little a little regret over how the Kenny Pickett situation turned out, and they they knew like a lot of the backlash that they got for that pick was that maybe some people didn't think Kenny was the first round pick in the first place. And I don't think they wanted to go through that again. I don't think they wanted to deal with that kind of speculation. 00:04:06 Speaker 3: Yeah, but the Rams are winning now. 00:04:08 Speaker 4: I got DraftKings has them with the best odds to win the Super Bowl. Yeah, Okay, Jordan Love worked out for the Packers, but the you know, Ty Simpson doesn't help the Rams. If he's helping the Rams, that mean, Matthew Stafford got hurt. Yeah, I don't understand. 00:04:24 Speaker 5: But see there's you know here, here's the other thing, And I understand the first round pick is something that obviously you expect to get immediate fraternal investment. 00:04:31 Speaker 2: There's a lot of. 00:04:32 Speaker 5: Time left and offseason they can still do things in order to help this football team short term. While at the same time, now remember remember last year, before the season started, we didn't know if Matthew was going to play. Who's to say that something couldn't flare up on him in the next three four and now we hope. He's one of my favorite people. So I'm not wishing bad things on him at all, But Less is trying to take care of the future while at the same time feeling as though they've done some great work with the veteran free agency mark for them to take both of Kansas City's corners to trade for Trenton Jaylen Watson, I mean they that was their number one need now I know. This offseason they've also they've also floated around and kind of flirted with trade and Davante because they thought maybe they could be in on the AJ Brown sweepstakes, which. 00:05:17 Speaker 2: He's going in New England. 00:05:18 Speaker 5: Yeah, but they were trying to get him too, so yeah, they they they've been very very active. 00:05:25 Speaker 4: Okay, Dante Adams is thirty four right? 00:05:28 Speaker 3: You had lemon there there? 00:05:31 Speaker 2: True? True. 00:05:32 Speaker 4: I mean you had some weapons there, doubt. And Sean loves shiny toys on offense, no doubt. 00:05:37 Speaker 5: And I think there there was probably a lot of real good discussion and probably some heated discussion discussion in that draft room about what they should do. 00:05:47 Speaker 2: But from what I gather, I think I think it was Adam who reported it. Somebody did. I don't know if it's Adam or Peter. 00:05:53 Speaker 5: They said that that Sean called Matthew before they before they picked him and told him, look, this is the way we're gonna go with it. So I'm sure it's something that's gonna need, you know, some massagy going through. 00:06:05 Speaker 4: A little more respect than the Packers did. Aaron Rodney, Yeah, there like to say the least, hey turn on the draft. We're going to take another quarterback there. 00:06:12 Speaker 2: To say the least. 00:06:13 Speaker 5: But you know what, this is the perfect place for tysons. I agree he is going to I said, you know me, man, I like to make big declarations because I'm kind of a convicted person when I when I really believe something, He'll have a decade's long career in that organization. If Sean sticks around and they just continue, this is the perfect, perfect, perfect spot for him. 00:06:37 Speaker 4: I was, as weird as this is going to sound, he could have a better career than Fernando Mendoza. That's given the situation. 00:06:46 Speaker 5: I don't disagree with that that could it could happen that way. 00:06:49 Speaker 4: But this is what I thought, And once again I have no intel on this. It felt like Less Snead is saying I'm going to be around here for a lot longer than Sean McVay is going to be. Sean might be a let's give this one more shot and then I'm. 00:07:04 Speaker 3: Gonna do some TV here. Is that Is that fair to say that? 00:07:07 Speaker 5: Yes, it's it's funny. Look, this is why I love you, man, this is why I love coming on this show. I was just saying that downstairs, what I was talking about. I was like that, that's what That's exactly what it feels like. OK, Hey, Sean, I respected you're one of the very best, and he is. But I have a feeling that you know that that Less feels as though he's entrenched in that organization. And look, the runway for GMS is obviously is always longer than coaches anyway. I mean, Marvin Lewis told me that a long time ago when we were both in Washington and I really was thinking about getting into coaching. 00:07:37 Speaker 2: He said, stick with front office. He said, this coaching businessman. Although he went on and what coached thirteen years for the Bengals. 00:07:45 Speaker 5: Yeah, but that's exactly what it's probably telling you, Like he knows that, Hey, him and Stan Kronkey, we're good. 00:07:50 Speaker 2: You do what you need to do. Sean is, without a doubt gonna go. Sean. 00:07:54 Speaker 5: Sean has Hall of Fame caliber coaching, you know, acumen. But he's also a dude who you could just kind of You can see he's got so many people who want him to do so many things. 00:08:05 Speaker 2: He's not hurting for opportunity. 00:08:07 Speaker 4: Talking to Lewis Riddick of the Mothership covering the draft last night, help me understand this. It feels like every year you get teams who look at the tape, ye, but then they look at the measurables. So ruben Bain, when I watched him play in the playoffs last year, was the best player on the field most of the time. Well, he's got short arms and he didn't run at forty. Therefore he's going to slide a little bit. I don't understand. Help me understand that the tape doesn't lie, does it? 00:08:40 Speaker 2: No? 00:08:40 Speaker 4: Okay, measurables lie or deceive. 00:08:46 Speaker 5: Measurables give you comfort in the event that the player doesn't work out, that you don't get fired. 00:08:53 Speaker 2: That's what they do. 00:08:55 Speaker 5: The draft is about. It's really a risk assessment exercise. So for Reuben bayin right, if you take him inside of the top ten, if he works out. 00:09:06 Speaker 2: You're a genius. 00:09:07 Speaker 5: You watch the tape, you know football, even though there's people going he's got thirty inch arms. 00:09:13 Speaker 2: If he ran a forty, he'd probably run about four eighty five. 00:09:16 Speaker 5: He'll only weigh two hundred and sixty three pounds at the combine. These guys don't work out in the NFL. But he worked out for you, So you must be pretty damn good picking players. That's great now, and so you can sit there and pat yourself in the back now. 00:09:27 Speaker 2: But see that's not how GMS think. They think. 00:09:31 Speaker 5: What if he doesn't, because then the owner is gonna come to me and go, Guys who are this short, that arm length, run that slow. There's a history of them not succeeding in the NFL. Why would you do that? Why would you put our organization at risk? Knowing what the objective data showed. 00:09:48 Speaker 2: You, You're out of here. That's what happens people. The higher up in the draft you go. 00:09:53 Speaker 5: You want to check every box possible that in the event that it doesn't work out, you can sit there and go, wasn't me, it's the player. That's why Russell Wilson slid. That's why Aaron Donald slid the thirteen. I know Donald was the best player in that draft by far, by far, but why did he fall? Because he was only six, He only had thirty one inch arms, even though he won every freaking award in college football and right now is maybe it's gonna go down as maybe one of the top two defensive players in the history of football. 00:10:25 Speaker 2: But they didn't want to take him that high. 00:10:28 Speaker 5: And that's why, because in the event that you're wrong, you want to be able to say it wasn't me. 00:10:32 Speaker 4: Give me the draft strategy that you didn't like, Oh strategy, I don't think there was you're okay with the Cardinals taking Jeremiah up? 00:10:44 Speaker 3: Yeah, you know why? 00:10:46 Speaker 5: And I knew you were gonna go there. And when I was sitting here running this through my head simply because I don't, I've had so many coaches and it started with James Franklin like two years ago when I was out at the we were down at the Peach Bowl and they were playing Ole Miss and I was talking to him about team construction, and I was like, what's the number one thing. What's the most important thing in teams construction right now? When you're talking about building rosters, whether it's in college or pros? 00:11:12 Speaker 2: What is it? 00:11:12 Speaker 5: He goes offensively, I don't care where I get it. I need explosive plays because it's too hard to drive the football eight nine, ten, ten plays a drive and to get points, whether it's. 00:11:25 Speaker 3: College football, high school, pros. 00:11:26 Speaker 5: I need guys who can win games if we stink up the joint for fifty nine minutes of a game, a guy who can win it on one play. And I was like, where do you care where it comes from? Because I don't care. Just give me a weapon. That's what Jeremiah Love is. 00:11:40 Speaker 4: No, I love him, But I don't like the quarterbacking situation. I don't know about the offensive line. Sure, it's kind of like Ashton Gents with the Raiders. Wasn't a good offensive line that's didn't have a quarterback. And I don't know if he's you know, there's a couple. 00:11:54 Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what. And I like that Ashton and Jeremiah are totally different. 00:11:58 Speaker 4: Though, Oh he's my favorite player in the draft. 00:12:01 Speaker 2: And and and here's the other thing too. 00:12:03 Speaker 5: The situation in Vegas was just messed up, you know, Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll. 00:12:08 Speaker 2: It wasn't gonna work. It just wasn't. 00:12:11 Speaker 5: John didn't. They didn't do a good job of building that offensive money. Austin Ford has a lot of work to do. But you know what else Jeremiah Love is gonna do. He's gonna like make that fan base go, Look, we need to go to the games. We need to buy some game. 00:12:21 Speaker 3: But I want to see greatness. 00:12:23 Speaker 4: It's it's like, you go, hey, there's Giselle, but she's wearing a burka like that. 00:12:27 Speaker 3: I want to I want, you know what, I want to see her. 00:12:30 Speaker 5: But I mean, look, a lot of people had mocked guys like CC Malwinoa tackle from Miami to that spot. You think anybody's coming to the State Farm Stadium to see Cec Malwinoa, They're going, Look, they're not going there. They're like, who cares, They're gonna go Jeremiah Love, I'm buying that jersey. I want to see what this kid looks like. And as we all know, it's a business too. I know, and that's hey. I love the kid. 00:12:52 Speaker 2: I love him. I think he's gonna they'll get it right there, I think. 00:12:56 Speaker 4: Okay, give me the big You guys had to be hoping Tyson and fell into a round two and you could have had a Schudor Sanders situation. 00:13:04 Speaker 2: Right. 00:13:04 Speaker 5: I had enough of that last year arguing with mel No. I actually I wanted it to happen just like it did, because now we're going to talk about it again today. There's some good players who are still on this board already. 00:13:17 Speaker 4: Give me three players that you go remember these players when I come on next year for. 00:13:24 Speaker 5: That were drafted last night. No, you mean that'll be drafted today? Yeah, Okay, let's see Denzel Boston, wide receiver from Washington. He is If you remember Marcus Colston when he was in New Orleans. 00:13:35 Speaker 2: That's what he is. 00:13:36 Speaker 5: But he's maybe even bigger and faster than that. Trading Stukes to safety from Arizona. This is a guy who most people know who he's trading Stokes. I'm just telling you about six foot and ninety five pounds fourth he is absolutely lights out as a safety. 00:13:56 Speaker 2: Lights out. 00:13:57 Speaker 5: And there's another guy from Miami named Keante Scott who plays defensive back. He's one of my top five favorite people in this draft, an absolute monster. 00:14:07 Speaker 2: Those three names. 00:14:09 Speaker 5: If you just go ahead and talk to football with your friends, you'll look really smart. If you mentioned those guys' names in a couple years ago, they're gonna be like, hell, did you know that guy? No, I'll be because you were here on Dan Patrick. 00:14:19 Speaker 4: I don't think that mel Kiper would ever describe Jeremiah Love as Giselle Bungen Anna Burka playing in the air. 00:14:27 Speaker 2: Now. 00:14:28 Speaker 4: I could be wrong, but I don't think you get that kind of analogy. No on draft night. 00:14:32 Speaker 2: No you wouldn't. Maybe you should come and join our desk. 00:14:36 Speaker 4: There's way too many people as they're already way too many. 00:14:39 Speaker 5: It's so fun, though, man, I mean, I absolutely love look the draft It's wild coming back here to Pittsburgh and doing the draft, because when I was drafted in ninety one, it for about fifteen years just haunted me. I hated the draft every year that came around because I went in the ninth round. And I probably should have left school here when I was They don't even have a night agent. I would have been a free agent. I should have left here when I was a junior. I would have probably went into the first, top of the second. I had just an absolute crap senior year, and so the draft was always something I hated. And to come back here now with to do the draft and the draft changed my life at ESPN eleven years ago. It's kind of a full circle moment. It's really cool. It's it's it's super cool. 00:15:26 Speaker 4: I appreciate you getting up. I know you had a long night, and thank you for joining us all year long. 00:15:32 Speaker 2: You know what I love coming here. 00:15:33 Speaker 4: He's Lewis Riddick of the Mothership. I mean, you got it all going on. And the thing is is you get out of bed looking like this. You sleep in that, don't you. 00:17:17 Speaker 8: You know, the lacker sometimes does stay in. I got to kind of sweat it out over the course of the day. 00:17:22 Speaker 3: Well, it's great to have you. Where do you want to start? 00:17:26 Speaker 8: I mean last night, I think the story of the Knight's Simpson at thirteen, which surprised plenty of people, but not the people who knew the dynamics that were taking place over the last several months. This was Less Sneed's guy. He was absolutely committed to Ty Simpson. There were a lot of conversations that going all the way back to December when Ty Simpson was deciding whether to come out or take six point five million dollars to transfer to Miami. 00:17:51 Speaker 3: One of the people the. 00:17:52 Speaker 8: Ty's dad, Jason Simpsons, the head coach at UT Martin leaned on was Less sneak and Less at one point when they were all out in LA for the Rose Bowl and mom and dad are still trying to figure it out and give him advice and why should Ty come out? And Less said in essence, I'm gonna take him at number thirteen. There's still a whole process they went through over the next several months here, but the tape, what they saw, the way that he functioned an offense that bears a lot of similarities to what they do in LA. He wanted to solidify that position for years to come, which doesn't happen very often when you got the raining NFL MVP on your roster. 00:18:23 Speaker 4: Okay, but the GM is all in. The coach didn't sound all in here, Tom. 00:18:27 Speaker 8: I don't think that any coach with a team that was as close as the Rams were last year is big on drafting a player who, in the absolute best case scenario, doesn't play a snap this season. That goes for virtually any coach. I mean, I go back through everybody points to Green Bay. But it's true. Brett Favre wasn't real thrilled about Aaron Rodgers being drafted. 00:18:47 Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers wasn't real thrilled about Jordan Love being drafted. 00:18:49 Speaker 8: And when you're in those windows, the coaches, naturally they're going, Okay, that's great, we solidified it. I gotta win now every year. If you don't win, you could be fired. You could have you know, the team could go completely sideways, the plan could change. You know, Matthew's never to be the guy this year. Ty Simpson's in the absolute best case scenario for him going into that style of offense where he doesn't have to play, he gets time to develop physically, he gets to learn from one. 00:19:15 Speaker 3: Of the best to ever do it. 00:19:16 Speaker 8: But in terms of Sean McVay, that's one less player You've got to help you win right now, barring some type of an injury that could thrust ty Simpson into action sooner than expect. 00:19:25 Speaker 4: Yeah, I talked to Lewis Riddick. This felt like less need is going to be there longer than Sean McVay. I want to make sure that I have my quarterback of the future, not Sean mcvay's. 00:19:35 Speaker 3: I mean less has been there. Less was the GM in Saint Louis. 00:19:39 Speaker 8: He's been with the Rams for a long period of time here. But no, absolutely, I mean Stafford's at a point in his career's thirty eight, He's been year to year. 00:19:45 Speaker 4: Was anybody going up like you drafted him? It can be the right guy. I thought it was the wrong time, and. 00:19:51 Speaker 3: I think that there's some fairness to that. 00:19:53 Speaker 8: You know, when I was mapping it out, I put Ty Simpson at thirteen to the Rams because I knew the dynamics, and I thought one way or another, they're going to get it. But I also thought they'd probably be able to maneuver around the board, maybe trade back, get another pick. Now you're addressing both, right, you're addressing the future as well as getting somebody that can help you now. But the thing is with a quarterback, and I would always say this, if you believe this guy's a franchise guy, don't worry about the slot. 00:20:15 Speaker 3: Don't mess it up. Even if you're wrong in the aggregate. 00:20:18 Speaker 8: It's like, well, we could have had that quarterback, but I didn't want to give up that fourth round pick. 00:20:23 Speaker 2: No, it's a. 00:20:23 Speaker 3: Quarterback, like, go get the guy. 00:20:25 Speaker 8: Lessenye believed it believes in ty Simpson is such a great degree. Yeah, he envisions him being the quarterback for years to come. But that's not to say this is Stafford's final year, that it's out or mcveigh's not going to be around. It's more so this was the right guy that they felt like for what they do in a college football environment where it's skewed so far toward even for Fernando Mendoza, toward it's shotgun, it's RPO, it's college style offense Alabama. The Rams started over sixty snaps last season where Ty Simpson turns his back to the line of scrimmage on play action. That's like a fundamental in the mcveaig scheme. That might be more than the other top ten quarterback combined to college football. You see Hi make NFL throws, NFL reads, We'll see. I mean he's got a you know, the concerns on him, where the durability, the size, you know, six' to, one playing around two hundred, pounds and then the guy only had fifteen. Starts he's gonna have time IN la which is what he. 00:21:14 Speaker 4: Needs, OKAY i went you on record who has a better, Career Ty simpson Or Fernando. 00:21:19 Speaker 8: MENDOZA i mean it's hard because you would say the tape would tell you so far It's Fernando, mendoza just in terms of the, volume how the arrow was pointing. 00:21:27 Speaker 3: Up on, him the. 00:21:28 Speaker 8: Situation but this, situation you, Know fernando's got a huge. Transition let's start, there going Into Klint kubiak's, offense which is a lot Like sean mcvay's. Offense so For, fernando he's got to learn a ton and you know the. Pressures Kirk cousins is, There he's going to be the. Starter he may be the starter for the whole, season but you know the moment That kirk throws an interception where they have a down, game you know where the questions, are, like no one's sitting, there going we got a Bench Matthew stafford and Put Ty simpson in because The rams Start ozho at. 00:21:55 Speaker 3: Two that's not going to. 00:21:56 Speaker 8: HAPPEN i think that the, environmentally Ty simpson is in the best place to. Succeed but in terms of what you, have in terms of the evidence so, far AND i don't, Listen i'm not breaking down. Tape i'm talking to coaches and scouts and executives all across THE. Nfl there's a lot to like With Fernando. Mendoza he wouldn't have been the number one pick in another. Draft he wouldn't have gone Above Caleb williams Or Jaden, daniels but he still would be a first round pick in any. DRAFT i don't know That Ty simpson would have been a first round pick in any draft if less seeds. Picking, probably but he's not somebody who was graded widely across the league as a first round or people had him in the second or third. Round in this draft where there's not that many first round grades to begin, with and it's a, quarterback you go and get the. 00:22:36 Speaker 3: Guy there's just it's much more. Projection one guy's. 00:22:39 Speaker 8: Developmental the other one In Fernando, mendoza is a guy who you knew who he's going to. 00:22:43 Speaker 4: Be help me understand. This it's the most important position in all of, sports and we had one legitimate quarterback in this. 00:22:50 Speaker 3: Draft they're getting paid more to play college. 00:22:53 Speaker 8: Football For Ty, simpson if he had taken The miami offer at six point five, million and this is part of him decided whether to come. 00:23:00 Speaker 3: Out six point five million to play At miami is. 00:23:02 Speaker 8: More than the signing bonus that the first pick in round two will get this. Year that's the difference right, now if you look at the number of players who win another. YEAR i mean before, Nil Dante moore From oregon would have come out and he would have challenged For Nando mendoza to be the number one. Pick Brendon soresby From cincinnati we now transferred To Texas. TECH i don't know that he Challenges, mendoza but he's a first round pick probably in that draft. Too next year you're going to have, potentially you, Know Arch manning could be in that, Draft hoover who just Transferred. Dandiana there's eight or nine quarterbacks if you talk to people who all could be first. 00:23:31 Speaker 3: Rounders, now there. 00:23:32 Speaker 8: Were times where we Thought Carson beck was a first rounder And Drew aller And Garrett, knutsmayer and we're going to be wondering about those guys when they go today and in some cases if they even go today in the. Draft so things can. Change but if you're projecting it, out that's the biggest fact is that the best players are now getting paid to play a, fourth, fifth, sixth in some cases seventh college season instead of going into THE, nfl where if you go On day three in THE, nfl you're getting a fraction of what you'd. Make call you're going to make more for one year of college. Football if you're A day three, quarterback then you would you, know in your entire four Year rockie. 00:24:06 Speaker 4: Cons, Well Trinidadad shambliss like another one he. Was he was fighting legally to go back to. College it's amazing to stay in. College usually they're fighting to get out of. College now he's fighting to go back To Old. 00:24:19 Speaker 8: Miss The Tennessee quarterbacks suit as well last, year obviously. POBVIOUS i mean the number of, lawsuits that's an entirely different. Discussion but it's the, truth which is guys want, to you, know keep coming. Back there are multiple players last year who are like twenty five years old and they're suing for additional. Eligibility, like my head explodes When i'm writing up the. Quarterbacks i'm, like so he played two years At juco and then played here for two. Years now he's here for two years and he's suing for a seventh. 00:24:42 Speaker 3: Year what are we? Doing but it's because you can make. MONEY i can't blame. 00:24:46 Speaker 4: Him Tom, PELSARO Nfl network In Cider day two coming up, tonight starting at Seven. Eastern who had a great night last? 00:24:54 Speaker 3: Night team? 00:24:54 Speaker 4: WAS i? 00:24:55 Speaker 8: MEAN i started with The, jets the fact that they got the best pass. RUSHER i know there was the drama, publicly and they weren't going to say whether it Was David bailey Or Rvel. 00:25:01 Speaker 3: Reese they knew it Was. 00:25:02 Speaker 8: Bailey and if you talk to ten people around THE, nfl nine or ten are going to say it's you have to Take David. 00:25:09 Speaker 3: Bailey he's the best. 00:25:09 Speaker 8: Pass rusher in the. Draft Arvo reese really talented. Player but it's it's a. Projection but why do you actually use? Him handsole his, visit they didn't need any more information on. HIM i, mean that's, It like he's he's a clean. Player usually use visits if you got medical or character stuff that you. Need some teams philosophically do. It The, rams for, instance don't do any thirty, visits which is why when everyone's, like how Could sean McVeigh not have Met Ty Simpson Because sewan doesn't go to the combine and they don't do thirty. Visits he's not flying across And evin dinner with the. Guy but in terms of what The jets ended up, doing, Yeah David, bailey he just he was a clean. Prospect he was the obvious. Guy maybe on some level you're trying to keep it live the intrigue of, hey we might take the other, guy make us an, offer come up and get, him and then you can always claim when you trade, back well that was the guy we. Wanted, Anyway it Was David. Bailey it Was David bailey for a long. Time the fact then they Get Kenyan sadek And Omar Cooper, junior both in the first two. Guys who if the board falls, differently LIKE i, thought there were scenarios For sadiqk could have gone fourteen or. Fifteen they might have Taken Omar Cooper junior at. Sixteen said they trade back they got. 00:26:07 Speaker 2: HIM i think it was. 00:26:08 Speaker 8: Thirty you, know for The jets needing to give a you, know an influx of talent on, offense build out those playmakers for whoever the quarterback is going to, be and we'll see what they do in this. Draft you, know obviously next year they got three first round picks in twenty twenty seven as, well they're going to get the franchise, Quarterback Breis, Hall Garrett, Wilson Kenyan, Sadik Omar Cooper. 00:26:27 Speaker 3: Junior this is how you build the nest for that kind of SUCCEED. 00:26:31 Speaker 4: I was told this morning that there was a guy who met with the front office of the team and they couldn't understand why he was so angry and they wanted to draft, it and they didn't draft. 00:26:44 Speaker 3: It last. Night they they they they. 00:26:48 Speaker 4: Couldn't understand like when you come in and everything's great when you meet with a. Team BUT i was told that this player just wasn't happy or like they didn't understand, it but they wanted to draft. Him have you heard stories like this that when you show up for your, visit you screw up the visit by how you, are how you present. 00:27:07 Speaker 8: YOURSELF i, mean look no further Than Shador sanders going in the fifth round last. YEAR a big part of that was that people walked out of meetings just, going we DON'T i don't know that we can have this as the backup. Quarterback you, know in terms of those, interactions like every team uses them, differently in terms of like the formal visits of the combine or thirty visits or. Whatever it is the biggest. Thing AND i Remember scout saying this to me one. Time is even why you encourage, players for, instance to work out at the combine is, HEY i can explain a bad number better than an empty. Box the same goes to, character where IF i understand why in this case the player you're talking, about IF i can understand why you're angry and HOW i feel LIKE i can come up with a plan to put a support system around. 00:27:52 Speaker 3: You not every player is going to be the. 00:27:53 Speaker 8: Same if you had fifty three of the same personality in your locker, room that the team probably wouldn't be. Successful you need different, guys you need those Dynamic but if you can't figure it. Out if a player lies to you about, something we, know hey there's something in your. Background you got arrested for, this and the player's, like, NO i. Didn't the team's, like, yeah you. Did that's a huge red flag if you can't nail. Down just like, medical it's the same. Thing it's, like all, right why is yourmad McCoy still on the. Board he's a top ten talent in this draft The Tennessee, corner and it's because there's an unknown related to his. Medical it's the same thing with character, personality which is we can handle different. Personalities there's some guys who are gonna need a certain type of coaching. Style some guys respond to that people screaming in your. Face other guys need you to love them. Up but if we can't get underneath to the root of what the issue is so that we can come up with a, plan that there's guys who get you, know if not removed from, boards but lowered on boards all the. 00:28:45 Speaker 4: Time for that Is Mike rabel a football. 00:28:48 Speaker 8: Story Mike rabel is a cultural phenomenon at this. Point you can turn On Good Morning america and see stories about. It you can open The New York post or don't open to look at the back page twice a week and you see stories from a football. PERSPECTIVE i would say, this the fact that he's not there On day three of the draft does. Matter we can laugh about day three of the draft if you know what happens on day three of the. Draft teams are recruiting undrafted free. Agents who is a better recruiter in THE nfl to come have you play Than Mike? Rabel And i'm not, gonna you, know try to speculate on what the therapy or the session that he's doing with his family this weekend. ENTAILS i guarantee it doesn't involve make it a twenty minute call to a kid FROM Ut chattanooga to get convinced them to take a fifteen thousand dollars signing. 00:29:35 Speaker 3: Bonus so in that regard as a football story and. 00:29:38 Speaker 8: The fact that he had to address it with his, team it's it's an uncomfortable situation for somebody who preaches all the time about make good decisions on and off the. Field the fact That Mike, rabel multiple times in the weekly up to the, draft had to get in front of his, team get in front of his, owner get in front of the, media and SAY i didn't live up to my. Standard that does create a football, story albeit one THAT i think even though we continue to have sort of a drip drip of information that continues to leak out by the time we get The, SEPTEMBER i don't believe that it's going to be at the forefront of many. 00:30:11 Speaker 3: People. 00:30:12 Speaker 4: Yeah the only THING i was concerned, about football, wise is is he loose with information giving out information two. 00:30:19 Speaker 8: Reporters there's different people within THE nfl who are loose with information. 00:30:23 Speaker 2: For a variety of different. 00:30:24 Speaker 3: Reasons, OKAY i would say that this is obviously a unique. Situation. Dan you haven't been in a situation like, this, though have. 00:30:33 Speaker 8: YOU i, mean if somebody took a photo of me holding hands With Andy reid on a, ROOF i think you'd have a. 00:30:39 Speaker 3: Problem I'm i'm pretty sure only bring up the. Photo, yeah there it, Is, yeah exactly. 00:30:45 Speaker 2: There you And, andy have a. 00:30:46 Speaker 3: Problem uh, no you're. 00:30:49 Speaker 4: Busy thank you for joining us. Here tom always great to talk to. 00:30:52 Speaker 2: You. 00:30:52 Speaker 3: Absolutely Tom, PELISERO Nfl Network. 00:30:54 Speaker 1: Insider Fox Sports radio has the best sports talk lineup in the. Nation catch all of our shows at Foxsports radio dot com and within The iHeartRadio. App SEARCH fsr to listen. 00:31:08 Speaker 4: Live Matt MILLER, ESPN Nfl Draft. Analysts we always appreciate his insight and uh he joins us, Now Matt, MATT i, KNOW i, Know, okay, Whoa we're, Good, Matt, Matt matt big, shot got suit and tie. 00:31:33 Speaker 3: On looks like you're going to your first? Communion you know is prom is probably? 00:31:38 Speaker 8: Prom? 00:31:38 Speaker 3: Yeah, no you know there's this show ON. 00:31:40 Speaker 7: TV i don't have to Get Sports. CENTER i have to go do that from. HERE i don't know if you've heard of. 00:31:43 Speaker 3: That, DAN i haven't tell me more About Sports. Center i'm sometimes. Jokes it's. 00:31:49 Speaker 4: Funny uh how did last night? Go do you think overall as a draft here that we didn't have big? Names it wasn't supposed to be? Sexy? 00:31:59 Speaker 3: Great a couple of. 00:32:01 Speaker 4: Surprises so if you're ranking drafts first, round where does this one fall in? 00:32:07 Speaker 3: Lines it was. FUN i still think twenty twenty. 00:32:10 Speaker 7: Four in the fifteen Years i've been doing, this twenty twenty four was great because we had quarterbacks at the top and you saw it. Intrigue you, Know Caleb williams is this generational. Prospect Jaden daniels was coming off the Historic heisman, season but there was legitimate conversation About Drake may was he going to. 00:32:25 Speaker 2: Be good or? 00:32:25 Speaker 7: Not Oh, Nicks Michael pennock's were surprise selections in the top. Twelve last night was a little, chalky, right but there were still some, surprises AND i think that adds to. It the backdrop was the best One i've seen so, far So i'll Give pittsburgh a ton of credit for. 00:32:39 Speaker 3: That the fans record breaking. Fans that was. Great so it's. Good Did Jeremiah love go to the right? Team, no not for, HIM i don't think. 00:32:51 Speaker 7: SO i think when you draft a running back, early you're looking at is the team ready for this running? 00:32:56 Speaker 2: Back do you have a? 00:32:56 Speaker 7: Quarterback do you have an offensive? Line we can look at what happened To Ashton. Gens have a running back five year rookie wage, skill we know you're gonna have. Him cost controlled to some, degree but running backs Are they're like rental. Cars you're gonna have them for a short amount of, time you're gonna have fun with, them and then you're gonna you're gonna move on to something. Else so we know running backs have a decline in their. Careers rarely do they perform in their second. Contract so If i'm The, Cardinals i'm looking At Jeremiah, love great, player my top player in the, draft but you're not ready for, him so it might be year two or three before you have the infrastructure for him to be productive as productive as he can. Be so that would be my, Concern especially If I'm Jeremiah love, Today i'm, thinking oh my, gosh Who's there's no quarterback, here there's no right. Tackle the wide receiver that was drafted in the top five hasn't been very. 00:33:40 Speaker 3: Good so it's all on me And trey. McBride that's that's what they have right. Now so why did they draft. Him i've heard a lot of you, know ticket, Sales jersey. 00:33:50 Speaker 7: Sales you hear that rumor about The, Cardinals but THERE'S i think there's also the element of you have a new head, coach you have a kind of a lame duck general. Manager so the head coach is gonna have a lot more pushed, there and they need. Someone they need an identity With trey, McBride so they're probably, thinking we need a hit in this. Draft we need someone that we can put our stamp. On i'll never forget When scott, mccluan who's been evaluating THE nfl for a long, time he was the general manager In washington and their first. DRAFT i talked to, him, said what what's your philosophy going into the? Draft he, said your first pick has to just be a. 00:34:21 Speaker 3: Single it just has to be a. 00:34:23 Speaker 7: Hit and they Took Brandon, shurff a guard From, iowa at number five. Overall it was a hit for ten. Years SO i think there is sometimes that element of Jeremih lives a great, player absolutely great, player but you want to make sure that first. 00:34:33 Speaker 3: Pick is a. Hit The rams, STRATEGY i don't get. 00:34:37 Speaker 7: IT i don't get it at, all AND i haven't got to listen to anyone else they have a take on this this. 00:34:41 Speaker 3: MORNING i don't understand. 00:34:42 Speaker 7: A team that is that close to The Super bowl and you have THE mvp at quarterback and you have this head coach that's toyed with getting out of coaching to come do our. Jobs and you're going to take a six foot, one two hundred and ten pounds quarterback who started fifteen. Games that's how you're going to sell TO rams fans The Super bowls in your. Building that's how you're SELLING rams fans that you're gonna get Over, Seattle San, Francisco, chicago potentially all the teams in THE. Nfc that's your cell is we'll draft a backup quarterback at. 00:35:12 Speaker 3: Thirteen, yeah it could be the right, player but at the wrong. 00:35:15 Speaker 4: Time that's WHAT i keep. Saying AND i Had Lewis riddick on. EARLIER i said this felt like less need being THE gm is saying this is for me AS i stay in this, job not. You sean McVeigh that you might be in this job two more years and go INTO. TV i agree with that. 00:35:31 Speaker 7: Completely and you're gonna hear all week now because everyone saw that awkward press. Coffers you're gonna hear that McVeigh Loved Ty. Simpson this really feels like you hired the family. Friend you, Know lessneaed and Ty simpson's dad are. Pals and when Ty simpson was trying to decide what he was going to. Do and for folks that don't know, This alabama didn't Want Ty sampson back if he stayed in college. 00:35:53 Speaker 3: Football he was going To. 00:35:54 Speaker 7: Miami alabama was sending him on his. Way so when they pulled people what should we? 00:35:59 Speaker 3: Do what should we? 00:35:59 Speaker 7: Do Lesson heed, said, oh he'll be a first round. Pick, well, like now you have to take. Him Right if you've told the dad he'll be a first round, pick don't you have to take? Him otherwise you've lied to your buddy about his son's future and maybe cost him six million dollars on A Heisman trophy At. 00:36:14 Speaker 4: Miami but that's on a binding contract Of. SAM i think it'll be a first round. Pick it's kind of Like carson back At, georgia Where georgia was, like, oh you know, what we're moving, on so you should move on as. 00:36:24 Speaker 3: Well and he goes To. 00:36:26 Speaker 4: Miami and when you think about six and a half million dollars to stay in college and the number of players and quarterbacks staying in college because we had one real legitimate quarterback in this year's, draft which seems impossible for the most important position in any. 00:36:42 Speaker 7: Sport, YEAH i stayed in college too long for, free so it's hard for me to imagine these. 00:36:46 Speaker 3: Guys they're, like turn it down six and a half million to just hang. 00:36:49 Speaker 7: Out but it will be interesting to see what happens today because we had two quarterbacks come off the. Board simpson was a surprise that. Early and if you're The Arizona, cardinals we were talking with them Of Jeremiah. 00:36:59 Speaker 3: Love you backed. 00:37:00 Speaker 7: Yourself into this corner that almost felt inevitable that you would Get, simpson whether that was at thirty four or with the trade. 00:37:06 Speaker 3: Up he's off the board to a division. Rival what are you going to do? Now do you? 00:37:10 Speaker 7: Called you could be breset this morning and, say, hey never, mind here's the pay raise you, wanted because you really have very few. Options but they could be a team that takes a quarterback early tonight and it might Be Carson. Back there's been a lot of heat that he's there. 00:37:22 Speaker 4: GUY i, like what The cowboys did you know when you find that guy and you said that's our, guy and you got you, know When saban has nothing bad to say about, you which is pretty hard to. Find they found a football, player AND i think that The cowboys and it'll probably be the face of that. Defense you, know. 00:37:41 Speaker 7: It's funny we all get off jokes about The cowboys about you, know they're being impulsive and they want to build fantasy football. Teams they draft really, well and it's usually offensive lineman defensive lineman that they do draft. Well SO i will applaud the you, know to resist the temptation to draft a. Receiver With george pickensign and his franchise, TAG i think is pound for, pound the second best player in the draft Behind Jeremiah. Love and to your, point you're getting a football player who as a true freshman started For Nick, saban who is the greatest defensive backs coach in the history of defensive. Backs he wins the national championship for, you then he goes To Ohio state wins the national championship for, them three Time All. American he can do anything you want from the safety, position and so, yeah that's a great pick For. Dallas Malachi lawrence was a little bit of a, surprise BUT i think the idea to move back and take him when you factor in the, trade then it makes more. Sense and they need speed with the move to a three four. Defense they need speed, rushers and that's who he. 00:38:34 Speaker 4: IS i, know we talk about the running back position, devalued what about the middle? Linebacker it feels, like you, Know Jack campbell is the last of an era of drafting a middle. 00:38:46 Speaker 7: Linebacker, well but The jets kind of did it last, night or excuse me not The. JETS i think we saw The giants do it at five with R Vl. Reese they're going to play him on the inside to, start or they have to because they Have Brian. Burns they Have Abdul carter they drafted last. Year they Have Keevon thibodeaux who has one year left on a rookie. Deal so if you're going to Draft Orville rees at, five we're. 00:39:05 Speaker 3: You going to put. 00:39:05 Speaker 7: Him and SO i think next To Tremaine, edmonds getting back to some of what he did At Ohio state is probably where you use. Him and then we See Sunny styles go really soon after. That so, hope my hope is that we get away from positional. VALUE i think so often we forget to just talk about who's a good football player because we talk about the economics of the. POSITION i guarantee you If Sunny styles Becomes Fred, warner no one will care how much money he made in his rookie. Year no one will be talking about the economics of a linebacker if he plays up to that potentials and all. 00:39:34 Speaker 4: Pro talking To Matt, MILLER nfl draft analyst for The, mothership we always love the following year's draft for. 00:39:41 Speaker 3: Quarterbacks, yeah it's always that all next year is going to be. 00:39:44 Speaker 4: Unbelievable can you say that honestly, that oh, boy next year's draft quarterback, wise is going to be. 00:39:52 Speaker 3: GREAT i think you. Can and here's. WHY a lot of times when we do, that we're. 00:39:56 Speaker 7: Projecting we're talking about if this happens and that, happens then this player will be a first round, pick like With garrett Us, Meyer Carson, Beck Lenora. 00:40:04 Speaker 3: Sellers we did that a year. Ago this. 00:40:06 Speaker 7: Year what's different is If Arch manning had entered this, draft he would have been a number one overall. Pick If Dante moore had entered this draft he would have been. 00:40:12 Speaker 3: The number two overall. 00:40:13 Speaker 7: Pick so those players have already proven their, status so barring an injury or a complete drop, off they will still be picked very early next. 00:40:21 Speaker 3: Year and then you have players LIKE. 00:40:22 Speaker 7: Cj Cart Notre dame that a lot of scouts are excited About Brendan, sorosby who's now At Texas tech From, cincinnati scouts are very excited. 00:40:30 Speaker 3: About so there's a long list next. 00:40:31 Speaker 7: Year that also makes it more likely that we could have a twenty twenty four draft with five quarterbacks in the first. 00:40:37 Speaker 4: Round but if you're looking at those teams next, year Is pittsburgh going to be on the. Clock, yeah as far as taking a, quarterback they should, be, Right The, Dolphins dolphins could. 00:40:48 Speaker 7: Be we have The panthers And texans are sneaky teams as well because their quarterbacks are playing out fifth year. Options so there's some options. THERE i Think miami could absolutely be in the. Mix and then there's always surprise. Teams you, know The Atlanta falcons could be back in that mix, again, Right, SORRY i mean but that they could. 00:41:06 Speaker 3: Be, Okay pennix hasn't been that guy. 00:41:09 Speaker 4: More likely to Extend carolina With Bryce young Or texan C. J. 00:41:14 Speaker 3: STROUD i Think TEXAN. 00:41:14 Speaker 7: Cj stroud just the success that they've had when a guy makes the playoffs every. Year but why not now Since Will anderson got? It, YEAH i think you pay good players, early the price only goes. Up they only get more expensive as the salary cap goes, up the demand goes, up and the percentage probably stays close to the. Same BUT i think you want to keep your franchise quarterback happy to some. Degree AND i don't think they've done him a lot of favors with their offensive. Line there's a lot OF. Cj stroud hate. ONLINE i don't know that he's had the best help around. Him Nico collins has been. Injured SO i think you make the move. Early what teams draft? Poorly oh The, BROWNS i, Mean And i'm not just playing. 00:41:54 Speaker 3: To the crowd, here The. Browns it's just the AND i was SY I i think The browns drafted poorly last. 00:42:02 Speaker 7: Night we get so caught up and, Oh i'm glad they trade it back to get this guy instead because they got an extra draft. 00:42:07 Speaker 2: Pick you're The. 00:42:08 Speaker 3: Browns you don't draft. Well extra draft picks aren't good for. You So Spencer fano is. 00:42:13 Speaker 7: A very good, player and he's gonna shore up one spot on their offensive. Line i'm not a fan Of casey conception in as early as they took. HIM i think small receivers who have drop issues are probably not gonna play well in THE Afc. North that would be my number one concern with a player like. That SO i don't think The browns draft particularly. 00:42:30 Speaker 3: Well and that's not me being a. 00:42:32 Speaker 7: Hater that's twenty seven years now of data that says they. DON'T i don't think The jets particularly. Do BUT i thought they did last night because they didn't, panic they didn't reach for a, quarterback they didn't overthink. It they got a great Player David, bailey a world class tight end In Kenyon sidek and then one of my favorite, Players Omar Cooper. Junior so, they're like we talked About, arizona The jets are actually building that infrastructure so that when they have those three first round picks next, year they can add the quarterback in be. 00:42:59 Speaker 4: Honest do you think you could run The browns better than The browns are being? 00:43:02 Speaker 3: Rung? 00:43:02 Speaker 4: NO i. 00:43:03 Speaker 3: DON'T i, Don't. 00:43:04 Speaker 7: OKAY i would like to. Try it'd be, fun, RIGHT i might get a, chance, right and general managers make good. MONEY i wouldn't say no to that. Opportunity but that's not WHAT i. 00:43:13 Speaker 2: Do. 00:43:13 Speaker 3: RIGHT i watch football AND i make jokes on MY. 00:43:16 Speaker 7: Tv it's very different THAN i evaluated four hundred and eighty three players this, year and If i'm wrong about, THEM i don't get. 00:43:23 Speaker 3: Fired so that's the. 00:43:24 Speaker 7: Difference Andrew berry's, wrong his family's looking for a new, House he's got fifty people that work under, him get. Fired you, Know i've been wrong a lot in this, job AND i can just laugh it. Off give me the most interesting player drafted. TONIGHT i do think it will Be Carson, beck just because that conversation of three years ago At georgia his first year as a, starter we, thought my, gosh this guy's gonna be a future number one overall. Pick and then it just he declines that he loses Brock bowers Loses lad, McConkey didn't seem like himself at. All has THE ucl injury and he was kind of written.
