they did draft express. They told me I was like
Kevin Johnson. I was like, I don't know if I
got that much bounce. He was almost there. Alright, you
live up to him. You could have passed the ball
a little better. I could have could have slid feet
a little bit. You really wasn't in the passing lane.
It's like, what is you got him? The real breakdown?

around for that time period. You get used to give

my hometown and I'm mad at Kenny Smith. So that's
what the beef started way back then. Yeah, I played
when I had that little chip on my shovel.

What I'm saying, that is wild. I went on Kenny.
It wasn't even his.

I sent that message, it was okay, I respected. That's
crazy because my hometown he's been a black full long time.
Yeah, I ended up playing for him. That's all good.
That is man, Let's talk about it, Like you said,
man from Sacramento. What was the hoopscene out in California
at the time period.
So when I was growing up La New York, big markets,
tons of talent, which makes sense, Sacramento was like French
lick and I ain't nobody thinking about Sacramento. And the
only player that ever came out was Bill Cartwright, so
he went to USF played in the league. You know,
did great things, but there wasn't a lot of scouts
and exposure and talent. It was before the AAU tournaments
and all those sorts of things. So my first real
exposure is we went down to LA for a big
All Star tournament and I got a chance to play
against Reggie Miller and obviously all these great players.
But prior to that, Sacramento never got exposure.
You fast forward to today, it's no different than the
other city around the country because there's his eyes on
all the talent everywhere. But back then I was one
of those kids that most people didn't know cabal. I
got lucky enough to get a scholarship to Cal Berkeley,
which was great. I wanted to go to Cal because
it was in a pack team. Now it was Pac
twelve and now it's no longer anything, but that was
the best conference back then. So not a lot of exposure,
but you know, we tried to rap best we could.
The cav heard you play baseball too for a little bit.
Yeah, I was too sport played baseball in high school.
My first love. You hear this a lot. My first
love was baseball. I played in college. I got drafted
in college. I had to make a choice between one
or the other. And even though baseball was my first love,
basketball I felt connected me to the black community, like
in a different way, and that's always been my north start.
So I chose. I chose basketball. It worked out and said,
I got drafted high got drafted, played in Cleveland for
about six months, cover coffee, not cold weather.
How was that like draft process though? For the MLB?
For you, they just give you a call, do they
tell you to pull up? What was it?
Yeah? I think I was unique.
I think because in high school I was gonna get drafted,
probably by the Yankees. They knew I was gonna go
to college. And they were right because I'm about to
get a free scholarship college, Like I gotta do that,
you know, That's how I was raised. So I knew
I was gonna play basketball in college. NLB knew I
was gonna play, so they didn't draft me coming out
of high school.
Oh okay.
Then when I got to college, I played one year
and they're like, just in case this brother does not
play basketball, we're gonna draft them. So I got drafted
by the Oakland A's and the way they do it,
they just tell you they talked to you before. They
say we're probably gonna draft you. We don't know what
round I get drafted. I'm going into my senior year
of college. They paid me, so they paid me forty grand.
So basically I got paid forty grand back then, so
I lost my scholarship, but at forty grand, I was
able to take ten of it pay for my college,
take another ten, buy a little car, take another ten,
send home and then save ten k. And then during
the summertime between my junior and senior year, I played
for the Oakland A's minor league ball team during the summer.
So that was kind of my It was a little
bit unique, but I gotta I gotta put my foot
in it, got to taste it again. I love baseball,
but basketball was just it was just my calling, you
know how you just you just know I was supposed
to play on that.
We always had this question, like what's harder hitting up baseball?
Good questions.
You think that's the hardest thing to do is to hit.
The baseball is hard? Yeah he said he can do it.
He probably could, but it's still hard.
You think what we say it was harder like kicking
a field goal, hitting the baseball? Was that what he
was comparing or.
Or hitting the pressure of hitting the free throw like
in the finals.
No, the free which we know free throw is just repetiti.
You don't put your time in, you're gonna be good.
If you got mental discipline, focus all that. You don't
get caught up in the fans and the pressure and
all that. It's just you knows. You said that from
an excellent shooter standpoint. There's a lot of people.
Who get up there on that line, boy, five percent
shooter in that crowd rocket. We just had an incident
where we had a kid on our high school team.
I found down one had two free throws, the crowd
was going crazy.
He made one. Yeah, but we was talking about the
pressure of it.
So yeah, I wasn't trying to say that the pressure
wasn't real, because it is. I'm saying, if you shoot
eighty five percent from the line, yeah, you're probably gonna
hit eighty five percent of the pressure shots. There's very
cute are gonna fold and go from eighty five to
fifty in every pressure shot. And if you're shooting seventy percent.
You're gonna drop a little bit than the pressure just
because it is what it is. But I'm saying hitting
the baseball is like hard, you know, you know, a
slider like come at you if you right handed, come
at you right and then break over to men.
And that's a hard piss to hit.
So I had to go, I just start switch hitting, dang,
so I can see it from a different angle.
Yeah, bro, you gifted bro for you.
NBA.
That's crazy. I couldn't an look hand, that's crazy. I
never really heard too many basketball players though that baseball
and basketball.
It's usually like football and baseball. It's true.
But again I'm y'all, ain't even call me og. Yes,
so thank you. I know it's coming in a minute.
But like, but like back in my era, Danny Ainge
played for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Celtics.
He did so that I go back to that era
where he did it. I'm like, if he did it,
I could do it. So I had somebody that did
it before me. To your point, it don't happen all
the time. But I think this is what most people know.
Y'all know this man athletes that are good, are good
in multiple things. It don't matter what it is. It
may not be to your point, baseball and basketball. It
could be basketball and football. You can't tell him you
can't do nothing. So that's what I'm say.
You can't tell him they play ping pong, they play pool.
There's just a lot of That's what athletes don't get
enough credit for. These brothers can ball at multiple things.
It's just not the one sport. You watch a highlight
of Lebron run around playing football and you're like, dang,
we tied end.
Ain't no doubt about it. Show it's getting the NFL player.
They're gonna see this to get mad because they always
say we could hoop y'all can't play football.
Yeah they always said that, but it ain't true. Matter anyway.
Like you said, uh, college, going through that process killing?
What was that draft process? Like knowing that you're about
to go into the NBA because it was obviously a
high pick number seven.
I was, you know, taking a step back going to
cal Berkeley. You didn't get NBA scouts coming all the
time to our games. But when they did came, when
they did come, if you knew they was in the stands.
You got to you got to show up, you know,
you got that, Like I got to represent the ship off.
So I ended up getting invited to It was callably
a Looha Classic back then, so all the top players
played in Hawaii after the season was over. And at
that point I was like a late first round early
second round pick, and I knew I wanted to try
to move up in the draft and I had to
play really well.
Do you all remember the name Lester Connor?
Yeah? He was My coach was less He called me
all the time. Actually, yeah, we'll see yeah, shout out.
So Lester played at Golden State, played at Orient State
was in the Bay Area. So I asked on I said, look,
I'm about to go to this law A Classic tournament.
What do I need to do to stand out? He said,
everybody's gonna be trying to score. Just play defense. I said, huh.
He said, play defense. Pick up full court, damn every
single possession. Now I wasn't known as the defensive player,
but I just thought that advice was so practical, right,
and I was always gonna score.
That was a given.
I picked up full court every single It was seven days.
You played two a days but you had to practice
scrimmage in the morning, then you had a game at night.
I picked up full court every day for seven days,
couldn't walk at the end, was sore. Got outstanding best
defensive player and moved up from late first round to
early second round to a lottery pick just by that
advice from Leicester. And look at the names that was
at this camp.
You had David Robinson, Reggie William, Scottie Hipping, oh Halidies,
Derek McKee, Reggie Miller, Munksy Bowls.
It was see like all those guys didn't all all
those guys were my class. They didn't all go play
in this tournament. But like Scottie Pippen was another brother.
He went.
Nobody knew in Central Arkansas, nobody knew Scotty was. So
we were the two that kind of stood out amongst
the players that were there. And then Kenny Smith didn't go,
So then I had another chip in I can't even
play against and show who I am. So uh yeah,
but we had a you know, we had a super
talented class, as you can see there in Ray Miller,
who was you know, game busters, and he went late,
you know, mid second round, mid first round here in Indiana.
Mark Jackson, Yeah, that's.
Hey, you wouldn't know. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but you
you wouldn't say come out. You went to the league
when I was born, So I was born in eighty seven.
That's we got drafted forty years ago. Through we gotta
have a birthday party. I'm just.
All right, man. You get drafted, obviously, said a cup
of coffee over there in Cleveland. You get to Phoenix.
What was that like?
So a cup of coffee and Cleveland drafted? You know,
I learned two things. I get drafted, I go to Cleveland.
It's heck of cold. So I'm not that that weather
would just mess with me because I used to you
need a again, I said wind, chill factor and defroster,
and you know, it was all kind of terminology. I
didn't I didn't understand. So anyway, I was dying to
get out of there. For for this reason, I went
to Cleveland. They had Mark Price as a point guard.
They had Ron Harper as a two guard. Run then
they had hot Rod Wims at the four spot, and
they had Brad Dougherty at the five. So they had
like this this four or five deep team that was
together for a year. So when I get drafted, all
the Cleveland players were pissed off because they had Mark Price.
So I came to an environment it wasn't super welcoming
and that bad weather, and then I get there was
that oh my god. So then I get there and
I'm not playing well and I'm thinking Mark Price didn't
have a great rookie year, but right he out playing
me like this every day in practice. And this dude
ain't even that good because it was before he became good.
I'm like, this is gonna be a tough run for me.
So I'm, you know, putting the time in, working hard,
first one in the gym with Mark West, last one
to leave with Mark West, doing it day in and
day out, and I wasn't getting a lot of run.
I was very frustrated. And the team was solid, but
I couldn't break through that. They had their they had
that little club, they had they they had they boy,
and they did break through it and I wasn't balling
at that next level. So when I was there, my
first big lesson was I just thought basketball was a game.
It was a sport. Let's have some fun. I overheard
some people that don't play a lot. They're like this
new dude, don't take money off my table, Like I'm
trying to get another year in the league so i
can get.
A pension or I'm trying. And I was like, dang,
they look at it.
I just thought we'd playing, but the people that were,
you know, not in the rotation trying to get another
year or two in the league. So I realized at
that point it was a business. So that was my
first lesson I learned. I was like, okay, I got
to I got to flip the script on how I
look at this. And then secondly, when I got traded,
my head coach from Cleveland was Lenny Wilkins Hall of
Fame point guard Wayne Embrey was a GM I got
traded to Phoenix. Number one, I was excited because the
weather right like, I'm coming back to some sunshine. And
number two, I said to myself, I'm never gonna walk
on eggshells again. And I act like I'm the new
sheriff in town in Phoenix. So I went there with
gangbusters in my mind. I won't hold back because if I
don't make it in the league, I'm at least do
it my way and If I do make it, it's
gonna because I truly gonna be who I am.
So when I got to Phoenix, man, I was on
a mission, not the fast forward too far. Is this
why you talked on how Rob Williams. Yeah, okay, historical,
that's why you caught him black as because he.
Wasn't nice to me in Cleveland.
Grudges.
I still got a couple more. Don't come out on this.
Like we know Ron Harper from like we're younger you
the o G But no, we know Ron Harper from
like the bulls there right? Can you like explain to
some of the people how good he was before the
injury young man?
When he was coming out of Miaomi, Ohio in college,
they called him the second coming of Michael Jordan's That's
how talented he was. That's how athletic he was. It's
like Randy mar He came from a school that nobody
knew and he was that good. So he gets the
he gets to Cleveland and he got all this athleticism.
He talented, but he learning because you know, the NBA
is a lot of adjustments.
You can't do what you do in college.
Uh not too many players game just automatically transfer at
the same level. So he and he in Cleveland, He's
doing his thing, he balling, but not at the next level.
And then he had a knee injury, so then that
slowed him up. He wasn't his athletics, so he went
from a super star to being a really good team player.
But everyone in Cleveland expected him to be at the
next level, which he wasn't like athletically. But then when
he went to Chicago and La, now his whole basketball
IQ came out and that brother just fit in and
was the missing piece.
Man.
You mad props of Ron And he was one of
the veterans when I got there that actually gave me
a little love, talking a little bit and was supportive.
So I've always thought very famably.
Of Ron Hops And now it's crazy his kids in
the league. Yeah, yeah, we gotta play this. That's funny.
I didn't know what the backstory is. Even better now
revenge come my boy lacking. Hey, you was disrespectful.
You're in the jersey's so crazy.
Got one of the most iconic jerseys of all time,

Bro number seven was crazy.
Who you gotta take today for doing that? A hang
on the real that's hilarious. Where did that come from?
Like you driving the ball like that, like that fierce
and like trying to dunk on the big guys, like
dunking on ha km dunking all right? Like did that
come from? Like growing up? Did you play twenty one
and stuff like that.
I was skinny.
In high school, like really skinny, and I was always fast,
like fast was my thing, but I wasn't super athletic
in terms of jumping my jumping ability. So my senior
year of high school, I had all my classes done
and they let me take a off campus class at
the junior college.
And it was a weight training class.
So I go to this weight training room and I
just work on my my leaps. I work, I'm doing squats,
I'm doing the leaping machine. I'm doing that over and over.
Man.
I went to the court one day and I was
just like wom and I couldn't dunk off two feet before.
And then once I got that, I grew into it.
I got a little bit stronger, and then that just
became one of my weapons. I didn't do it all
the time, you know, to me, it was trying to
make a statement. It was for to show that you
fearless is to try to change the momentum of a game.
Momentum of a game, or you gotta if you're gonna dunk,
you gotta dunk on somebody big. If you literally you're
on some point guard that ain't you ain't gonna get no,
you know, for me, it was always, man, if there's
a big dude, I'm gonna try to send a message.
So that's where it came from.
I ain't gonna lie back in the days when you
play out of been super scared because they used to
wipe boys out, Like I know you had some of
them moments fearless. Yeah, you had to be gone that
dun man playing the pistols and try. But you know,
y'all know how this says. It's true, they would wipe
you out.
So I knew how to get to where I needed
to be, and there was no wiping out if I right.
You know, if I can get to that spot, you
can't work. Now if I take off from out here,
anything is So I had to get close enough that
I knew if I went for it, I'm in control
of what I can do even if they found me.
But if I took off too far then, to your point,
anything could happen At that point I was I just
had to pick my spots.
I had to be smart about it. I forget go

little mind. I was cocky right like, thinking to myself
I only got to do it once and then I
went to the lod and you know, it was a
signature moment. We end up losing the series, but it
was it was it was a statement to let them
know that we weren't going to back away and we
meant business.
So and I'm representing the little guys there. Now, you
played both of these teams, not so fast word too much.
You played that Bulls nonay, obviously finals will talk about that, shorty.
You also play against that Rockets team. They always say
that gap year with MJ. You think that the Bulls
would have took care of that Rockets team. Yes, So
it's just Rockets fans who believe that basically because we

So you know, we say this as athletes, every every team,
when you start a season, I think you can win
a championship, but only a few of them really know
they got a shot. We had a three year wind
window on Phoenix in my twelve years. We had a
three year window ninety two, ninety three, we lose to
the Bulls, which we can talk about. Ninety three, ninety
four we lose to Houston who won it. In ninety
four ninety five we lost to Houston who won it.
So that was our three year window. We lose to Chicago. Fine,
we up Houston three to one. Didn't nobody, even including
the Houston Rockets think they were gonna win that serious.
I'm walking around the mall into Galleria.
Man, the fans was like, oh my god, this team
is so lame and they didn't support them. They was
having playoff games in the fans wasn't even coming out,
so they forgot all that. So then they they win
a game pretty soon as three to three, they end
up beating us. The fans now on board, right, They
going crazy. And then they went on and did some
great work for two years in a row. But there
was a moment there that they were not that Shuston
Rockets team at that point. They became that Houston Rocket
team playing against us. And then went on and you know,
won two championship, did a great but I think we
all think I mean Chicago, until you beat them, you
can't say you would have beat them.
Yeah, that King was just so crazy though.

and I ain't like him then and we would just battle,
right and then time out. And I remember this really
funny story.
Danny Ainge was.
On our team and Gary Peyton scored and Gary Payton.
Said, you can't guard me.
You can't guard me, and Danny he said, we ain't
trying to guard you, Gary, you ain't got no offensive game.
And Gary went b circ.
At that point and and you know he got the
nickname the Glove because of how well he def you know,
how good a defender he was against me like his
doesn't gave him the nickname the glove because I couldn't
get away from him. So Gary was a And now
we talk more now than we did we play each other.
So I don't dislike him now, but when we play
each other, I don't like you. We like this, say't
like we friend buddy, buddy kissing all that, that's not it.
Now afterward Gary and I are mad pross respect. And
he was a tougher defensive player for me to guard
guard against or for him to guard me. Stockton was
tougher because their overall team approach and how they played.
They played you know, they had Slowan as a coach,
you had Karl Malone, and they was crafty and they
knew how to play good team defense in a way
that was was difficult for a point guard.
To play against as well. Now we'll get Barbie here
in a second. But John stock they said some assass
cooked the cook he was on the court is a cat.

Stockton either, nobody.
