M hmm a. The dark days of December upon us. Here we are
in the dead of winter. Only the Giant bomb Cast is here to provide
you warmth. At this point, he is literally dark outside. Because we've
started this podcast, dark outside, dark outside days are getting shorter. It's
cold outside. Office chair up into the fire un once you're in the Southern
hemisphere, in which case, sorry, if there's a fire in your office,
you call this chair away. No, it's just the warming, the
warming glow of the bomb Cast. Do you ever listening to the Giant Bobcast.
I'm Brad Shuremaker. That's Alex Savarrow. There's true scandal. I'm here
Patrick, Hello, Dann record that. That is a hell of a beard
you've got going getting up there. That's fun. Impressed, seasonal nuts.
Laziness. It was like three weeks lazy. It is three weeks, yeah,
Jesus man, laziness is for all seasons. This is four months.
Yeah. This is this. It doesn't get any time. It starts to
turn red if it gets too on good doing good, proper, proper,
like mountain man beard. I'll take it you have a trend to that at
all. I don't know the giant bombs crazily at fakey Caravella. Yeah,
still here, still here for days. That's the clock's sticking. It'll sound
too excited about it. I'm very excited about San Francisco. Yeah. Oh,
it's the city that sleeps. It's a great place, all right.
It's a possible to order food after ten pm anywhere. City that shuts down
at eight o'clock on a Sunday, that's for sure. Jeff Carson. I
had a moment literally on Sunday night where I was like eight o'clock and I
was like, get thinking about getting in bed, and I looked at clock.
Oh it's eight. I should m we'll stopping you. I don't stay
for another half hour. Okay, yep, that's that's valid. Yeah.
I went to bed at nine thirty on Sunday night. It's great. That's
living great. Jason a Striker writing the iPad of steel. Here we go.
I think it's fancy, isn't it nice? Like a full mixing board
on your iPad? There on a good show, some press of stuff.
Here we are. It is December. The video games are out. They
can they came out. The video games are out. The news is coming.
The news. However, it's hot off the presses, so apparently there
are more video games to come. Yeah, that's good name. I figured
that after this year. That really are we We fucked it up bad this
time government was going to step in. We've been visited by the ghosts of
Christmas, ghosts of video games. Future keep and it's a class action lawsuit
saying ship a fucking working game. Oh man, stuff happened over the weekend.
Few years from now. I'm gonna get like two bucks in the mail.
Yes, if you accidentally bought a Ubisoft game in two fourteen accidentally,
we're sorry. If you were someone you know, video game lawsuit money Tom
Slash Mesothelioma. Ubisoft games don't happen by accident. Okay, yeah, no,
you know what you're kidding. Yeah, they're very deliberate. They're very
deliberate. If you don't know what you're getting into at this point, you
have not been paying attention. A lot of stuff happened over the weekend.
Yeah, like a lot of news broke for a weekend in December. Yeah,
like a thousand percent more than you would usually expect. Is this like
the midnight on a Friday of news of months. No, I think,
well that's usually news you don't want. Yeah, they're like very Yeah,
it's not like they were trying to like slip this out with nobody noticing it.
Okay, all right, I didn't know. I don't know the nature
of the news, but it is highly atypical. Well Patrick does, Yeah,
maybe Patrick can help illuminate the situation for US newsman and Patrick k put
on your news cap Newsy Uh. I mean we had two like unprecedented like
events back to back, like like like the Video Game Awards and or the
Game of the Game Awards, the Game Awards, the Chilies, which yeah,
that was you know, the the exception of the Nintendo stuff was fairly
low key but like little games and then the PlayStation keynote. The next morning,
Yeah, like completely forgot about till Vin and I woke up and I
was like, oh, there's news breaking. I'd suddenly flipped this laptop on
watched the second half of this we did. Why isn't this ending? Yeah?
Long, it went like two and a half hours long. I was
I was trying to do stuff that day. I had like stuff like scheduled,
like Okay, we're gonna get on the road and do this and this
and this, and then that thing went way longer and then so the whole
reason I was watching because I wanted to buy one of those stupid gray playstays.
And they didn't announce that, like they said, like, we're gonna
announce the you were I was part of our keynote, and then got down
there and said like, we're gonna announce it shortly after our like an hour
and a half after the end of the keynote, which already ran longer than
it was supposed to before they tweeted the link for that thing and then about
seconds before the website. There should be a law for if you were going
to sell something in a limit did capacity, or if you are going to
announce something that you were then going to take orders for that, like if
if basically if there is a case where a website is going to obviously go
down where you know, like you know going in like, oh, the
Sony store site's not gonna be able to handle the rush of people going after
however many like there's twelve thousand total, but who knows what the US allocation
was for these fucking PlayStations, Like there should be a law that if your
website crashes there, you owe everyone five dollars, like everybody who like everybody
that tried to get one. Yeah, just everybody in the United States.
If it logs your IP within a certain window, yeah bucks. Yeah,
Like fucking make that shit work that goes across the board. Like when Black
Friday rolled around, all the deals started happening on on a lot of other
little sites and stuff like that. There were plenty cases where it's like,
Oh, I got all this stuff in my cart, and then by the
time I got to check out it, the site broke, and then by
the time it came back up, everything was sold out. You know,
multiple occasions of this sort of stuff happening. Did that happened on Amazon?
Because Amazon always, to me, seems like the one Amazon is a rock
doesn't fuck around right, So it almost makes me wish they had sold these
ps fours through Amazon. That probably would have been a better experience. This
is one of those things where it's like, you know, everyone has a
shit experience. Everyone's like I was left in a lurch where I'm like I
had to hit the back button and submit multiple times just to get anything to
work. Am I going to suddenly be charged twenty thousand dollars for this sort
of stuff, And would you complain if it's like eight PS four showed up
given what they're selling for an eBay right now? No, I guess I
guess I would not. I don't think those prices are legit. They are
obviously going to go for a pretty penny. Yeah, they'll go for over
the five hundred. I don't think. I don't think those twenty thousand dollars
eBay auctions were fucking ridiculous. I thought it was fifteen. I mean those
went up, those auctions went up before this thing. Even those media number
ended up being something around eighteen hundred, which sounds but you know, I
wouldn't pay it, but I could see it. So what it ended up
happening? Did you ever make anything happen? No? No? What are
they Would they retail for four ninety five? Are people getting confirmations if they're
not? Yes? Yeah, I got a convert so I had about fifteen
browser tabs open. You've been down in this room two and a half fucking
hours refreshing every one of those tabs. Never got anything like how far did
you get? I got over to pay pal, so they let you check
out via PayPal or via their site. Via their site was a fucking those
job. The whole thing didn't work on pay Pal. I could at least
get out to PayPal, tell that how I wanted to pay, and then
when it went back to Sony, it would crash there. Okay, So
I put in a credit card number at one point. That was the furthest
I ever got. Yeah, like put in the number and hit submit,
and that was it. So whatever, you got to the page where if
they checked the credit card and say all right, you're good, now click
this to confirm the order. I never even saw that page. About twenty
minutes after I stopped refreshing all those tabs, I got an email receipt.
Oh so you got one, I don't know. So I got an email
receipt that came in, But again I never actually saw statement there's a pending
charge on there and you have one. But somebody called Sony support the next
day and said, yeah, we ever sold the console. We're canceling orders.
So so there's a very significant chance that we might be one of those.
I am fully expecting that order to get canceled because they sold more than
they were supposed to it was. It was an awful experience. Yeah,
and that's the sort of thing, like we're far enough along in buying shit
on the internet that like everyone can anticipate that this will be the case when
you do stuff like this. So the fact that it still happened, I
mean, obviously it's a hard problem, but I mean, Apple selling their
iPhone this year, there's like crashed when the crew orders happened. If Apple,
who you know, at this point should be the most well versed in
selling annualized, like it needs to be better, Like they need at least
need to be like make the appearance that they're they're heading in the right direction
on this. You want to know. The kind of fucked up, dirty
thing about all that, though, is there's there's a part of those companies
that really likes it when that shit happens, because, you know what,
they're still selling those units regardless, and may get to say, we crashed
our site. So many people wanted these things. They didn't They obviously did
not do this to make money. It's just for publicity. Yeah, but
uh, do you ever feel like you're your information is more compromised when that
stuff happens, Like when your credit card is now floating around in some nebulous
not that place you know, you're secure connection whatever. I think it's when
I have to submit it. Like, here's something fucking crazy I got.
I got a phishing email from from Netflix a week or two ago, made
air quotes like it was you know, you mouse over one of the links
and you can tell it was clearly not Netflix, although the email looked full
on right there. But it was like, we've detected a discrepancy with your
credit card. We need you to log in and fix the details. And
then they listed out my like accurate expiration date and last four digits and I
was like, oh, that's and you you verified that that was settling yours
and the I mean, yeah, I know my credit card no, wow,
yeah, so that is on settling. I hope they don't have the
whole thing. I mean, you can find a receipt on the street that
hasn't feel like that. But it wasn't your full credit car. It was
like it was a bunch of exes and the last four digits and the expiration
date. So that was fucking creepy. But but yeah, this, yeah,
the PS four thing really sucked ass Uh. The weirdest part is I'm
not even sure why I bought that thing because I have no use for it.
So yeah, that was the thing. I mean, you should talk
if that thing actually shows up. Yeah, yeah, because I don't.
I don't have let's use for it. I'm going to build out a second
room as an office. The only reason I wanted another PlayStation was because I'm
I'm going to be a two PlayStation household. Anyway, if you had bought
one, would you open it? Yeah? Really? Huh hmm hmmm A
lip it good? All right, you wouldn't open it. I don't know.
Well, I don't need it. I'll probably you would just hold on
to it for ten years. I don't know what am I gonna do with
it? Put in the closet? Yeah, good point. I literally have
nowhere to put another second. I just wanted to see if I could get
one of these because it was gonna be so crazy anyway, just for the
sport of it. But then Jordan, but then I couldn't someone else can't
have it, But then I couldn't let it go. So like just like
you, I sat from ten am until this. It was almost four pm
by the time the saga concluded for me, Wow, six hour gave up.
Well before that, like six hours in front of the computer trying to
get one of these things. Uh yeah, no, I gave up terrible,
I gave up. Well, what shall we talk about first? Uh,
well, let's backpedal twelve sixteen hours or so from there to the Game
Awards. It's good sleeping dogs which happened. Yeah, that logo was real
sleeping dogs looking. But yeah, this is Jeff Keeley's production. Yeah,
kind of continuing on from the let's see the last year it was the vg
X yeah right, yes, and previously it has been the vga's, the
Spike TV VGAS. This was the second online only one, right, that's
because x SO this is its own thing. The vgx's were still affiliated with
Viacom and all this other stuff like this is Keiley out doing, yeah Keiley
stuff. The TNN Game Awards, Yeah, yes, the National Network.
Yes. Do you have a list there for how many more they actually gave
out? I don't have a list. We did watch it here, yeah,
drunkenly, So I watched half. It seemed half remember it. It
seems like a few It was like maybe four televised Awards or something I think,
and then a couple of just well, it seemed like four like come
up on stage, open the card, and then a couple of like I
by the way, yeah, I feel like I technical oscars. I feel
like I voted for about fifteen categories something like that. Yeah, I mean,
you know they were listening on the website. There were It was a
significant number of categories. I was in a car for most of that show.
You were in a roller coaster on that show? Yeah? Really?
That was the clip they pulled for the trending game category was you and Dan
on the roller coaster ups and downs too? True? So I watched up
to the Battlefield Hardline segment before Dan and I checked out for hood Slam.
My impression of that show was that, in terms of general respectability and just
kind of like respectfulness of video games, that seemed pretty far and away beyond
what they had been doing with the Spike partnership. The sheer volume of commercials
and I am not just talking about like the exclusives that Keiley had locked up
for you know, presenting it the thing, but just like the number of
games that are already out being advertised on this thing was a little much.
It was. It had a time with something though because there was no real
life didn't because it had to be some money back because TV. Yeah,
No, I know that, and I know that they had to make money
and they have to change the set like they have to. I mean,
there were things that have to happen, right at least compared to the amount
of actual awards show content they presented in the court, like in concert.
With the sheer number of announcements that were going on at that show, that
thing might as well have been any three press conference. Yes, it was
very much. It felt like two to one World Premiers and commercials two awards.
Yeah, it's also guys playing Tetris music on lasers. There was that
that happened, that shitty band that did the Hardline theme. No, that
was at the end with Koji Kondo oh okay who it was kind of okay,
yeah, I oh, I hated that. No. I think in
terms of like you have, like you're gonna have stuff like imagine Dragons for
like appeal and like demographic stuff and whatever you think about Imagine Dragons. They're
a popular fucking band and you for the audience like us like saying Coachy Condo
come out, do you know a little medley and then have the class to
stick around and play piano over their bit. I thought, in terms of
what you have to do to make an award show like this work, Coachy
Condo playing piano with Imagine Dragons was pretty fucking cool. Yeah, yeah,
I think that's an interesting moment, you know, And it's it's you know,
you don't necessarily think about Coachy Condo, you don't necessarily think about the
musicians of that era playing like quote unquote real music alongside musicians and stuff like
that. So I think it was an interesting pairing. I fucking could give
a fuck about amagic, right, but diastically and like the like, I
think that's an interesting approach. And also those guys, you know, again,
whatever you think of them, like when he came the lead singer,
his name, I have no idea what it is, but he seemed to
give a shit about being there, like they cared about Zelda. Like that
pairing was not It seems like they were having is much fun part and it's
like, you know what, it's got to be commercial that meets like,
you know, quote unquote artistry, and it's I feel like Keely achieved a
much better balance of that stuff. Their set was them on stools playing an
acoustic set of Zelda music and yeah, so that by the time I got
home and remember, like those things are still going, Like I turned it
on just in time to catch that, Like that was all right, but
the part was okay. And this thing, I'm not I'm not saying that
I don't like the idea of musical acts being on there at all or anything.
It's just that that particular band really really rubbed me the wrong way.
Imagine Dragonde want to be. Yeah, it sounded it was just real bad.
I mean honestly, like that, you know, anything attached to hard
line at this point, which it sounds like that that whole segment was just
as tone deaf as it could be given the current climate for police in around
around these days, the idea of like putting out your fucking rule breaking cops
break the rules or whatever. Yeah, like come on, no, no,
no, Like they had to know they were walking into some fucking shit,
right, Yeah, but that's I mean, I don't know, hardline
I think is like getting a justified but also bum fucking rap for that stuff.
Considering that as a society. We have celebrated the fucking badass cop in
culture for decades. Absolutely, it's it's the timing, just absolutely. And
also that game doesn't necessarily look great, right, so it doesn't help.
But there's that like it looks ham fisted. And then also the climate is
completely toxic to or that game is completely toxic given the current climate, and
yeah, this the whole thing that adds up to just a disaster. Yeah,
the timing with the events of last week and then this awards show capping
the week was not good. Like ships what end of March. Yeah,
that's right, I mean, you know, like on the one hand,
you imagine the DA committed to filling that spot like weeks or months ago,
But on the other hand, you could appeal to good taste and think about
pulling it at the last minute. I don't know, Yeah, that's they
put something else together in that time. How you're gonna get another band,
another game, like you know, there's all sorts of stuff. That's yeah,
but regardless, like, yeah, that whole thing seems you know,
it's not like they had to fill a certain time either. You know,
this was not TV. That's true. So for my money, yes,
the best part of this entire thing, The absolute best was seeing Kennon ROBERTA.
Williams live in the Flesh on a stage in twenty fourteen, because as
far as I was concerned, they fell off the earth in like nineteen ninety
six or whatever it was a minute after whatever. King's Quest ten seven,
I think it was the last one she made, but I mean she maybe
she was kind of involved a three D one, right, Oh, I'm
pretty sure they were gone. I mean they sold to Vivendi and then pieced.
I thought she consulted or something. Maybe. I'm pretty sure they bailed
as soon, but Origin still made it. Right, what's that King's Quest
ten Sierra? Yeah, whatever, I'm not exactly sure what the timeline was,
but the only thing that was worried about that bit was like the way
they set it up was that's like Sierra is still going and always has been.
Yeah, that was Sierra got bought and became a labeled basically, you
know, I mean, granted that was also they kind of coincided with the
death of adventure games the first time, so it basically just became a publishing
label to put out like Half Life and stuff like that, and then they
retired the name after a while, so yeah, it's just now come back
in the last couple of months for game. But oh wait, really the
get wow, I didn't know that it's just Active, It's just Activision.
They couldn't keep using the Activision value name because everyone got the message that that
means garbage. Ye. I always like the Sierra logo. Yeah, I
did too. I was thinking of King's Quest, mask Eternity, masked aternity.
Yeah, it was the last one. That's the last one thing she
did she did. Yeah, really, I thought, you know, they
maybe they hung around for like a year or something after they sold for a
lot of money. Uh, I did fucking money there. I mean the
story I heard was that they basically bought a yacht and said later I never
looked back. It's awesome. So to see them back, and you know,
they're in their sixties now. She did have some weird line when she
came on and was like, you know, I'm sorry I don't have a
game to present. Yeah, I don't know, are you. I didn't
get the sense that there's any remorse. So the odd gentleman making the new
King's Quest game like a month or so back, had posted a blog update
where they had met them and kind of showing them the concept art and some
footage and stuff and like basically, we're seeking their blessing. And they reprinted
the email that she sent them afterward, and nothing about that sounded like she
had any desire to be making games again, very much like passing the torch.
And it also kind of felt like she was just sort of showing up,
being like, yep, I did make those video games. Yeah see,
I mean what was it? It was like an icon or a lifetime
achievement or something like that. Was it was? You know, it was
a it was awesome. It was a nice moment. I mean, like
those games I think are more siminal than some people give them credit for.
Yeah. Like, like Ron Gilbert was out there on Twitter after that segment
aired saying like, yeah, without King's Quest, we never would have made
a Maniac Mansion and stuff like that. And she definitely does not make public
apearances. Oh that's what That's what I'm saying. Nobody's like like the last
interview they gave was in like two thousand and one or something like that.
She also looks exactly the same. Yeah, I want to say I don't
know if it was new interviews or not, but they were at least quoted
extensively in Harold Goldberg's book that came out a few years ago, over Arching
history stuff. Okay, so they haven't been totally absent from scene, but
pretty much kind of hidden in the footage of the show. Looked good of
the new game, Yeah, like, yeah, well you want to just
you want to just run down all the stuff it was announced. It was
announced at this thing. Yeah, all right, if you want to,
I guess. Okay, a lot of things with the words world exclusive attached
to things EXCLO. Well, yeah, it's like a new trailer for you
know, like Dying Dying Light and stuff like that. Games that are almost
out but still video you hadn't seen before. Top of the show. The
first big announcement was a new game from Fulbright. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
makers have gone home or now making a game called Tacoma Tacoma. Yes
Space at least called it before the reviews like this one's space, this one's
space, yes, and then yeah, oh did you because yeah totally here
in some little pod or something at the beginning, and yeah, I didn't
really say much about it. It's like thirty seconds of footage and it comes
out in twenty sixteen, so it's like a year and a half away.
Uh, you're walking around a space station or maybe a moon base. Female
main character they I believe, I believe it is a it is a moon.
Okay. It referred to it as like lunar transit station Tacoma or something
like. Yeah, I had a little bit of it. There was no
gravity vibe. You walked in a little bit of a like Columbia. Then
oh yeah, yeah, I have a BioShock. You look to it like
a lot of gold. Art deco is not quite Art Deco, but yeah,
kind of a regal looking almost like a hotel lobby or something like.
Things were falling around and yeah, suggesting that you've whatever wherever it's place is
after maybe some sort of disaster. Maybe yeah, it was like nobody there.
Yeah maybe altho. I don't know how it wouldn't be there. There'd
be some gravity on the moon. I wonder if they'll I'm gonna have to
get them on the phone. I wonder if they'll do the same thing again,
where it's just you come into a place that is empty and then piece
together what happened, Like, I wonder if they'll stick with that sort of
motif of you know, there are no MPCs that you're actually going to the
counter. There are characters, but they are revealed in ways that are not
This one is actually an arena based for multiplayer focus. It was Tacoma.
Yeah, but it sounded like it was over with the radio right. Not
to put too fine a point on it, but that's an effective way to
tell a story if your budget is fairly small. Sure, yeah, I
don't have to animate a bunch of characters and stuff. Yeah, I mean
I think it was a success, but you know, not you know,
tended millions of dollars or anything. That little bit they showed that world looked
nice. Yeah, totally. I mean I'll play whatever they're gonna put out
now. More generally, I'll play an infinite number of empty space station walking
around exploring games. Yeah, sure, curious to see what would you wish
for? There's a lot coming up. Yeah they were really two on that
show, wasn't there there was another one? Well, might as well jump
right to a d sorry oh a drift, Oh with a one in there
just because it's the first one. Okay, got it got it, That
makes sense, didn't you Patrick? Didn't you play a Drift at E three?
Yeah? Yeah, Adam who people may commonly know as the deal with
It guy from the Xbox One reveal, but yeah, he kind of exited
the company after that. And then at E three, Yeah, we went
and saw a Drift, which is not a VR exclusive game, but it
is certainly being pitched as like you know, best on VR, and it's
it's basically gravity. The game is kind of my understanding. Now you're alone
in a space station after it has been ripped apart, and then you have
to try and I don't know, they haven't damaged. Yeah, they haven't.
Haven't shown like what the mechanics are they have if there are mechanics,
they haven't shown what it is beyond just floating through space. It looks gorgeous,
and I think it did. Yeah, I mean that stuff looks you
know, exploring spaces is by you know, at least in the early days
of VR, like what it is really good at. It's like putting you
in a place. So the idea of floating in space in VR sounds sounds
pretty interesting. Yeah, but you know what it is beyond that? I
don't know, it looks pretty. I was. I was kind of impressed
that those are both like a kind of understated teasers. You know, like
it's not on TV anymore. You don't need shit blowing up every ten seconds
in your material. It drift was a little long without a little bit they
could have tightened it up, like I sudden, you know, the the
tension they were going for, like going after the oxygen thing, it could
have been about half as long. Sure, but there is such a thing
as too understated a teaser. I think it was also shown on that show
whatever, that ea indie thing was the student light thing? Yeah, yeah,
yeah, the people in the train. Yeah, I guess it's being
made ins at Dice. No, I don't think it hasn't. So he
like Joseph something his name, but yes, the guy who made Brothers.
Uh, he's founded a student now so it hats like the studio. Yeah.
Yes. It also might be the name of the game, the game.
I don't I don't know if that or they may have just actually not
said the name of the game yet and this might just be the name of
the studio. But yeah, they they ran a video they had like Patrick
Sutter and talking about it at you know, like he's investing in the studio.
Okay, it's kind of interesting since they don't like officially have the Partner's
program anymore. Yeah, what is the apparatus that they're going through to do
that? Right? Well, I mean it seems like I don't know if
this is an EA owned studio or what the Yeah email probably email changed.
It says, uh, they got a pager e a blog. Yeah,
that studio is called hates Light and this is their first game, So I
guess I guess it's possible they end up being called the same thing. But
it seems like it also, which wouldn't be a surprised the game is about
Hobo's. I mean, I'm super on board with whatever that guy wants to
do next. I just I felt like that teaser was like the most nothing
teaser. Well it's it's a teaser. It's I mean, it's even for
a teaser. It was thing. It's a teaser. First studio. Yeah,
it's a it was. It was a classic Uh you know in the
EA now the now EA template of we're gonna show you nothing but say some
stuff like they did through all three E three. We're gonna show you footage
of people working at keyboards, Yeah, making with that. Yeah, there's
that one shot of the two guys like riding the rails. Yeah, like
like jumping on it in the train car he slows zoom out, So who
knows what that is? I think the moon to them And that's it.
Mean that run the game hopefully, I mean if so great is a throw
mama from the train level though, that's really gonna blow your mind. Yeah,
I'm like a lot of you. I will check out whatever that guy
makes next. What the hell is metal Gear Online? I missed that?
Do you think it is? I mean, I know what it is.
It's it's the online fucking multiplayer mode the Metal Gear game that no one actually
wants. Sure gets into these because yeah, no, I'm about as big
of metal Gear fans have to come. And I played a little bit of
Subsistence when it first came out, and a little bit of Metal Seas in
spite of its mechanics like stripping away the dumb fucking story and all this other
chaos to say like we're gonna have you shoot an other human players like it
just breaks the whole thing even more. It's all terrible. I will I
will say Ground Zero's played well enough that I could almost see a multiplayer mode
being Okay, I'm not saying I'm gonna want to pray it's not what I
went out of that series. I want to shoot people. Right, you're
right, But I mean there was a time like maybe like when online play
was first becoming a thing between like two and three, like, oh god,
what would metal gear be like online? And then you see what it's
like. It's like, that's okay, I'll see that other series. Did
you guys see the video? Is there anything? Yea interesting in the he
takes a selfie with Aweslot. Yeah at the end, did see that part?
Yeah, there's cardboard boxes. Uh huh, Okay, you can teleport,
which the part where like he dropped, he dropped in a attached like
a parachute recovery system thing, the parachute thing. Yeah, so you can
take people off the battlefield or whatever. That's of use that in multiplayer yeah
yeah, yeah, so they had that in a peace Walker and portable apps
for a little mix. Yeah, a little tiny Metal Year things, a
little by pedal Metal Years platform that you could jump on and and uses a
vehicle basically okaya, Oh there were some of the two two two legs,
the like yeah cal mooing goes in there, yeah yeah, right, sure,
yeah yeah whatever, Yep, that's the appropriate response you have. You
have Jima at your awards show, so might as well, I guess keeper.
Yeah, like it wasn't That made the point on Friday about like key
for introducing, right, not the other way. It's it's the sort of
thing that you look at and go like, Okay, this thing you know
is caring about video games, because yeah, it's key for introducing Kajima,
not Jima introducing And see what he will about key for Sutherland he if if
he didn't, it was as as mercenary as he has somewhat been made out
to be as far as working on that game, he at least sold it
well. He at least seemed enthusiastic. It's very genuine. Went off script.
Man, he's a pro. I don't need these teleprompters. But the
thing about his his yeah, no teleprompter. I think about his stories was
he kept saying like, you got this friend that I'm I won't name this
friend, you know actor, you know, talk to this other guy I'm
not gonna name him either, because nobody wants to be fucking associated with this
ship. It was like the feeling I got it like, I'm not gonna
name anybody here because I'm not gonna rad him out. Yeah, well you
know, on't you just say their name and or not tell the story?
Then? Yeah, don't keep yourself want to get blacklisted? Man? I
guess, and then I tuned out. I can't remember what he said technology.
He said video games and push technology forward like much faster than the film
industry. I think, okay, that's fair. I kept I kept hoping
he would say something about Mortal Kombata that he gave a very definitive answer on
that topic. Did he he said Keeper's not in it right, He's hell?
Is Keeper getting that from? Then? I don't know. Maybe he
thought he was he had a deal in place for something, and so did
he actually say yeah? He There was some implication some time ago that he's
gone on Twitter like Ed and has gone on Twitter since then, and also
reiterated like, no, there is no key for Sutherland, and Ed Bond
said this says a lot of things on Twitter, So I'm not I don't
know if I put a whole lot of stock in this was this moon lying.
This was all the way back in February that key for Sutherland was talking
like he had something to do with a new Mortal Kombat. Keep in mind
that it might not be this Mortal Kombat game, and then it may actually
be somewhere in secret production on a shallond Monk style game. Oh it was
an In an interview to IGN, he said, I did Mortal Kombat and
that's such a huge game. But it's but it's so not like MGS five,
right, So I guess it wasn't quote from him. Yeah, I
don't know, so I guess, yeah, I'm guessing maybe maybe both could
be right. Maybe you're right that it's it is right, because you know,
that was the question at E three is key for Sutherland in this game?
He said, no, so there's two Mortal Kombat games coming up at
that point, I would take another shaland Monks. Yes, yes, totally
was good. So at some point, like you know, it seems like
everyone everyone there wants to revisit like the action adventure template for a Mortal Kombat
at some point, so it would make sense at some point to Syrax and
Sector instead of Luke Kangen Kung Now Noah, probably. I mean I when
I think about Keifer Sutherland voicing a character, it's it's just Striker. It's
this is a striker game, mortal mythology. Striker. Yeah. Talk about
glorifying cops, yeah, or you know, I mean, but actually I
could see like them going and making Johnny Cage key for something. It's got
to be sure, yeah, keeper like the gun of the one that fits,
but not like cocky, arrogant. He's like I was just a real
grounded guy like black is not like whatever. Man, I look for a
smart amount of Johnny Cage. Yeah, exactly. Think like I think if
you go from the movies, like Keifer could voice because who was riding in
the movies, Christopher lamberts for Sophie. If you take Christopher Lambert as kind
in riding, yeah, like he could voice riding in something totally oh doing
doing a Lambert doing a Lambert. You never go for Raden also Lambert,
yeah, yeah, or he could just do be doing riding. Who's going
to be more right? All right? Just stick it with the metal gear
stuff. Flipping the script again, we got Robert Bolling came out and finally
showed that Human Element game they've been working on kind of yeah, and by
showed, I mean had a CG trailer. Was this CG It looked like
it might have just been highly stylized, really because at the end they were
like, oh, get look forward to like beta access. I thought maybe
that might have Actually that whole thing looked a little too like flamboyant to be
a game maybe, but it seems to be some kind of post apocalyptic zombie
shooter. It always was a zombie thing, did they always say that?
Yeah, okay, yeah, so it's like one of the things like right
out of the gate like it. Because that ended up being like technically it
was the first uh it was the dark sector of this generation. It was
the first announced right next general ration game. Yes, because they were out
there early talking about like it'll be like twenty sixteen. You're like, that's
we'll all be dead by then. That's not real putting out a prequel in
the uh yeah, yeah, because that was trendy at the time. Yeah,
because that's a good way to like get people excited to we just make
a lot of money I Kickstarter. Let's say that we're doing that. That's
a weird studio. That game has had a weird history so far. I
don't know if that trailer convinced me. I just in it. Yeah,
I mean I think that, you know, the the zombie Shooter is one
of the most creatively bankrupt concepts in video games going today. So the thought
of like one of those still yet to come, Like, nay, wish
all the luck one if you're lucky. Yeah, uh, you know,
wish m all the luck. They put together something unique. But yeah,
I don't know. I think I don't know. I think zombies can be
generic enough that it's it can be like a canvas for something. Yeah,
it just seems like a short cut for Jeff, it's about the human ement.
It seems like a short cut for all these enemies are gonna run directly
at you, stumble directly out of At least what they're showing is that you'll
be fighting a lot of humans, right, Like the zombie Apocalypse is a
backdrop for like fighting raiders and humans. Is that the general Just yeah,
it seemed like you you were fighting human humans. And at the end,
because I remember jan trailer, I kept going like I thought this was a
zombie game. Then there was a you know, the zombie turns or whatever
the human turns at the end. I don't Yeah, it was underwhelming,
we'll see. Yeah, that trailer did not blow in my mind necessarily.
And then I think the only other thing that came out of that show that
we've never seen before was King's Quest. How that look it looks? Maybe
it's good. Yeah, I don't know how it's going to control or is
it direct? Looked like it was going to be direct control, like a
stick from what I could tell, assume if they're gonna make it mass appeal,
they gotta put Yeah, I mean that's just sounds cost how games control
these days, right, But there was no combat like well, it was
like a montage. Yeah, but it looked very much like it Vicher Games
scenarios. You know. The pr said it was gonna be you know,
like heavily inspired by events from so it seems like they might have been kind
of like a highlight reel of like your bits from the King's Quest games.
It looked, yeah, just one it would be like No, I mean,
it very much does seem like one from what I can tell, I've
actually never played all the way through one, but you know, kind of
read up on it, and some people were commenting on our trailer and stuff,
and like, yeah, there are specific moments from one in that trailer,
like the dragon and finding the magic Mirror and stuff like that. I
never liked the King's Quest stuff, so I'm real excited if there's a remake
of It's so weird. Like growing up all I only knew people who played
Sierra Adventure games, and then like getting into the industry, it's like all
Lucas arts all the time. Yeah, I like one person that played the
Sierra stuff, and and he was weird. I just played I played space
Quests, that King's Quest. Yeah, I played Space Quest. I mean
you know it was basically kings Quest, Space Quest and these quests. Yeah.
I never tried to play Lary because it's I heard it was sexy.
I bought one of the leisure Zo Lay games. I forget. I think
it's six. It's the one that took places in a ship. I think
of some good pun. I feel like that's the only one one I played
was in like a resort, like a coastal resort or something anyway, so
it was it was yeah, like sorry is this the Awards show or is
this the show We're getting infused where Tim Shaffer came out and talked about his
stuff. No, no, that was there was there presenting, but uh
and then there was the Mario Maker stuff and Zelda is that it? Oh?
God right, I totally forgot to write down Zelda watch Fox also watching
it, it was kind of referenced. They said they said Star foxs will
be out the summers basically basically summer or other because they were eluded that.
I don't think it's really hard for me to imagine that game. It's not
November. But yeah, they said by Thanksgiving, and the star Fox would
be out before that. Oh wait, they said Zelda was by Thanksgiving.
Yeah, so you think star Fox is a summer summer Yeah, that's fucking
crazy. I don't there's a Star Fox game six months away that they haven't
announced. If you they announced it, I mean we're shown and put a
name on it. If you look at their lineup, like these games have
to exist in those timeframes because they don't have a lineup past us like Splatoon
might be the last. Yeah, you would have Yoshi and Kirby early parts
of but like nothing past the spring right right, nothing major anyway like Zelda's
nebulous. But then Mario Maker then didn't put a firm date on when they
announced it back at the three. So did they think it looks early?
Yeah? I think the said early in the trailer, maybe in March for
April. So yeah, Mario Maker Earl is like kind of getting there.
It's say, it's hard to say. Maybe they showed World and three and
stuff in there. I mean that's progress, and it seems like they're kind
of implying that there'll be mechanics that are exclusive to each tile set, but
like it doesn't sound like they're necessarily saying that that includes the physics. Yeah.
Yeah, like they showed the new Super Mario Brothers wall jumps and stuff,
and like I think it'd be weird if they went back and put that
functionality in three Year World or something. Yeah. Have they said specifically,
well, I guess it's the firstime they've shown different arts styles, right they
show I mean it had two art styles in it back Mario Brothers and Original.
So have they ever said that, like you're gonna be able to flip
art styles between your own designs you can send when you're playing that prototype.
The prototype at E three was it was just a graphical like tap the button
of changes like it's see that that worries me then, and they showed some
of that in that trailer. I thought, I feel like, so it
just doesn't seem like that because that thing, I still maintain that for that
thing to be exactly what it needs to be, you need to be able
to create the entirety of those games. In those games. Yeah, if
they're going to include the tile set, you need to be able to make
it. Uh. And you know, so that means if you're including Super
Mario World, that means allowing people to make levels that have hidden exits.
That means like overall, it means allowing people to create packs of levels that
connect together and having the physics be right, bugs and all. I think
they'd have like a world map that you can make too or is that a
bit too ambitious? I think it's a bit too ambitious, But you know,
you should be able to string levels together and then you know, you
can create warps and stuff like. You know, the version they showed to
the three didn't even have working pipes, so you know, and and they
just were saying jack shit about it back then. Other than like this is
what it is. We don't think it's gonna on a little sharing. I
don't know that'd be cool. That's the part that I'm still not super confident,
is like they could make the best level editor in the world and the
way you share it, but like they don't nail that. Push Moo has
that stuff, you know, like Nintendo has put out products that do that.
Sure mostly writes, I guess they just mean, like the game actually
the extra mile of the connected levels and things like that is really what it's
gonna make it shine beyond. Yeah, And that's the that's the thing.
I feel like they to ultimately realize this concept and replace all the ROM hacks
and level editors and stuff that people use with emulators, like it needs to
be that robust. And I guess I'm just worried that they're not gonna go
They're gonna get like seventy percent of the way there and go we nailed it.
Like, No, they're afraid of like replacing their own games. No,
because I think that you know, they can still sell those things separately
on the WU and they'll probably do fine. Uh And and also like,
you know, at some point they put out a new console and Mario Maker
is not available for that again, so they could get away with selling all
those Mario games again for the film. So most of those levels are gonna
be junk so like, and the ones that are really good, maybe they'll
take inspiration from and be like, yeah, that's we should probably make that
game. Or they should just charge an appropriate amount for Mario Maker and actually
just include all those games with it off the bat. Ooh, Mario Maker
plus like an All Stars Yeah, that'd be awesome, play all those games
in Mario Maker off the bat. Absolutely. The whole thing about flippant art
styles though, worries me. It makes me feel like that you're gonna have
to have like a common rule set, no matter what it looks like,
right for the levels to keep working. If they were going to do that,
I guess they'd probably go with New Super Mario Brothers. That seemed to
be the direction they were going in at three, which is good. I
mean those games feel good, but it be it just people that have played
World and three in those games are like, there's one thing off about that,
and those are those are different games, you know. Yeah, So
that's yeah, we'll see, or like Yoshi is in one, like you
know, like can use Yogi and Mario a threes art style or stuff like
I want to see what original Mario Brothers Yoshi looks like. Yeah, yeah,
it's a piece of pooh right on. It's literally brown. Yeah,
it's brown spright. It'd be cool if you could play those original games and
then just start yeah yeah at anytimes with stuff. Well, they showed that
when somebody was running and they jumped, and then they kind of paused it
and showed the person drawing in Yeah. Yeah, what if you can make
cat Mario right, yeah, just make blocks invisible, just make it super
fucked. I mean you should be able to some of the mechanics are real.
Some of the custom stages they had in that trailer, I thought we
pretty neat some pretty neat like clockwork setups of things happening that they had.
Yeah, that that thing will hopefully be perfect. How about that it's so
close that feels like a dangerously close to like sorry, Like that's gonna be
a huge teach you the disappointing game next year. Like it's a weird situation
because you can sit there and list out exactly what it needs to be right.
Yeah, like you could bullet point a list of here are the things
you need to hit. It's just a question of whether they do, because
it wouldn't even be that hard. If they can, yes, will it
right, if they like allocate the resources to make it right is a is
a big question. And then the show does Zelda Yeah on a TV Yeah,
Zelda funny Andrew, We're both sitting there trying to figure out. I
think it might be real. Really, I don't know. I've kind of
gone back and examined the footage was convinced it was. It really struck me
a corner pin to that TV. Yeah, but there's some stuff about it.
I went back and looked at the kind of over the shoulder shots of
the game pad, and he does hold it up kind of each time they
kind of show the inset shot. So the one is when he holds it
up and does I forget what. There's some motion control with the game pad,
and it looks like it's mapping pretty well. Even if they comped it
after the fact, they could have been recording from them playing live. Well,
So yeah, that's the only thing, Like there was like some kind
of real dirty build that they're playing live, and then they put this like
nice gorgeous render that was not rendered in real time, that was just kind
of rendered through passes on. Getting into some healthy conspiracy theories, I've just
recorded a demo and then that's what I would do, just kind of like,
okay, let's just do another render. We recorded that, let's just
do it another render pass on it and pin that up. He does put
his arm in front of the screen a couple of times, and that's hard.
It could be mapped out. I know. That's the biggest conspiracy of
the show. Glad you guys are here to break this down. The reflections
look weird. Reflections are weird, and there's a lot of different light sources
in that room, and having record recorded videos off of TV's for a long
time, it's very hard to balance light balance, I'm sorry, white balance
all of that stuff together to have your screen look okay. So you can
do it because you can change the color temperature in a window right behind the
master sort does not burn at that temperature. I love I love how we're
spending all of this effort here and not even questioning their decision not to just
fucking direct feed full frame. That's Nintendo's really gotta have a shoulder in the
shop. Yes, that make a lot more sense when you have people moving
their arms around to play the game. And I think that so early enough,
which also is what makes me think this game is shipping next November.
Like, yeah, but I like it too. You know, there may
be details and draw distance, they don't, you know, they're perfectionists.
Yeah, like they want to show more of it, but they're not ready
to lead than the show. Yeah. Yeah, but I totally believe what
you're saying, like this is a good way to hide any like kind of
small flaws that would show up if you could scrutinize it. Especially it did
look pretty blown out though at some point when he was like on the horse
and there's a bunch of green and I'll like bled into the same shade,
and that's what happens when you shoot off a TV. So I don't know,
maybe they thought of that. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah,
Like I mean, unregardless, support to come in here and rerender it to
see if it's accurate. It looked looks cool. I thought it looks really
nice. I hopefully they you know, what they're in applying it could be
a part of that game. If that actually is what that game is,
Like I'm super exciting about it. Like it's still not really clear. Like
they said a way point, you know, like one of the things that
uh I knew, missad I was like, oh, you're gonna see something
in the distance. They plan a way point and then go and do it,
Like I was gonna say implies like it's just how big is this fucking
world. We're gonna say, you can tell how new Ninto is at making
open world games. They totally did the you can see that tower over there,
yeah, and then you might just go to it. Yeah, I
love that hopping off the horse and SlowMo arrowshot thingy. Influential talk goes and
yeah. Yeah. The use of the map on the game pad like really
nice, Like if you see it is a huge if you are doing a
proper open world and you can like annotate the map and drop way points on
there and stuff and like go back and forth like that. If that's that's
looks pretty useful and it's gonna be great for mapping like items and stuff.
Because Ocarina time on three DS, it was so great, like I need
to turn off and put on my iron boots in the water time we just
tap a screen instead of pausing every time and switching out the mapping, Like
it's that could be great. I'm very curious design wise if they take some
of the stuff that was in was it the link to the past, when
the link between worlds between worlds and do the kind of more choose which dungeon
you want to go to? Uh? Do you want to? You know
not open world is a bad way to put it, but like you know,
you choose which dungeons you want to go to. The items that you
get don't rely sequentially on you know you And also the thing like bombs and
arrows and stuff being tied to a cool down meter instead of like slashing bushes
to get bombs and arrows. Like I love that change in link between worlds.
Yeah. One of the things that aim Is said the said in the
video is that we wanted to make it to their events in the game that
you might miss, Like I don't think they're going to go full on systems
like you know, Bethesda, but they seem to be wanting to drawing elements
of that, like if you choose to go over here, you might miss
out on what's happening on this side of the map. And I don't know.
All that stuff sounds potentially like I think this stuff could make a news
Elda game like really exciting, and that the new art style looks fantastic,
like it's Skyward Sword. I kind of liked it they're trying to do,
but it didn't really click for me. And this seems like a middle ground
between Skyward Sword and Windwaker in a way that I think looks really fantastic.
Yeah, so yeah, it makes you it makes you realize how restrictive the
kind of the overworld design has been in the last two three Zelda's, like
not having a true you know, like remember that like the shape of the
map and the first Zelda it was just giant fucking rectangle, you know.
I think Twilight Princess was probably the last three D one to have a full
map like that, like wind Wakers, just little islands, skyward sworders,
the floating on the rocks and everything. Yeah that's true. Yeah, Yeah,
it's been a weirdly long time since anything like that MAJORA and Twilight Princess
had it. But yeah, lately, you know, really yeah, pretty
good. And then then they showed a bunch of like new videos from games
so we already know about and in some cases we'll be playing like a month
from now, Dying Light and stuff like that. No Man Sky. Yeah,
that was much more heavily represented after the PlayStation experience. Actually, I
got a download code for some build of Dying Light. Oh god, really,
I thought you were gonna say no. Thought you were gonna say that
too. I was like, why are we even sitting there even all day
and you haven't mentioned this? Yeah, I was planet. I don't know,
fly to planets or something discovered a planet? Is that cool? I
don't know, but yeah, PlayStation experience was kind of bright and early next
morning, are we talking about No Man Sky? No Man Sky scares me
to death? Why? Because I feel like we're just setting up a most
disappointing category, because because like what is like that is the refrain? Like
the thing? Ever? That's the line now about that game as well?
I think because they've been so cagy about what you actually do, everyone's filling
it in with their own expectations, and you can't expect to hit all of
those when everyone's are different, I guess like, would you be happy it
was just a scanning game. So here's the thing I have come to realize
over the weekend. Okay, the thing everybody else is worried about No Man
Sky being is something I would be perfectly happy with it the scanning game.
Like well, I mean that's a look at reductive. But like, if
that game is okay the galaxy, if that game really is primarily focused on
just exploring and like taking in an infinite number of sites, you know,
and and like really just about feeding a sense of wonder, Like I think
I'm all right with that because like I will never be able to travel the
stars in my own lifetime. So you know, if there's no gameplay,
if it's just those visuals in that soundtrack, I am going to start taking
drunks because I think that's yes, if that's if that's all it is,
then people who smoke a lot of weed will get way more out of it
than everybody else. But I mean they've already said that they're you know,
there are enough like hard mechanics or whatever you want to call them in terms
of like weaponry and ship upgrades. We've not seen engine up They don't have
to show they'll talk about that stuff. I feel like they just not in
the trailers. Haven't been you guys haven't been reading enough. But they've absolutely
been talking. No, I'm serious, like that info is out there.
I'm saying, like that stuff doesn't play well on a trailer. But they've
shooting and that totally doesn't play well. They've shown ship combats first. Since
the first video, they have shown footage of you in your cockkits shooting down
other ships. I remember, like, I feel like that people just keep
glossing that stuff over. But they've Yeah, they've talked a little more nuts
and bolts, like but but yes, but to what end? Oh,
you're right, you're right. That is if it's just target practice, well,
to get to the center of the university and something happens the yeah,
the end your mind comes out. Yeah, is that curiosity frog fractions too?
If you just if you get to the center of the galaxy and it's
just the curiosity cube and you have to start tapping on it and everyone else
to start shooting it, yep, for months shows up. You're right,
Like, why you'd want to get to the center of the galaxy? They
haven't said, like what the specifics are of it, but there they did
talk about how the engine specifically lore in in one of the in one of
the presentations, either it was at the Game Awards or at the Placeason Experience
that it was in reference too, But it was the first time I've heard
them talk about like a mythology right for that game, And that makes me
curious if maybe they are hiding a lot about this game they also know about
yet that's it's certainly possible, but they know they can kind of get away
with sweeping vistas and that shot of you going from the planet to space like
for a little bit while. And do you think this game comes out next
year? I think it kind of has to. Maybe, I don't know.
I mean, I feel like that's what they've sort of been angling to,
right they're showing it on I'm too rapid of a scale at this point.
Yeah, maybe too much further off than that. Yeah, And they
said, like, we have a date set in our minds that we have
to stop working on it because we could just do this forever, keep implementing
features, and I think they planned to do that. They said they planned
to do that also after the fact, but at some point we have to
ship it right, Like one of the things that kind of worried me.
You know, whatever it is, they have not said one way or the
other like you guys said, but like he lands on that platform, gets
out of the ship, looks around, gets back on the ship, and
takes off like right. I mean you know part of that I think,
do you need to land? You need to because do you need to walk
around at all on planets? Is it just the same? I mean,
like I had asked a bunch of those questions back at E three. Uh,
And like you know, there will be a like what sounds like a
traditional open world little mini map when you're actually playing the game. I mean,
they seem to have disabled a lot of that stuff and the trailers,
but like you'll effectively have the equivalent of like question marks on your little minimap
on any given planet, and those represent like you know, it could be
alien ruins or oh there's a crash ship or its like by fuel blah blah
blah. Like probably, I don't know. I thought there was like a
one part where you're kind of it looked like you were getting minerals that might
then be a resource. It seems that that's the case. I mean,
because at E three it kind of sounds like every question we had was still
their design was still open enough where they're like, you know, we're thinking
about doing I don't. I think that was just more of them not wanting
to commit to things publicly yet. But like after the fact, when we
were like they were like shoving us out the door, and I wouldn't stop
asking questions, and like Sean was saying, like, you know, you'll
start out into the given system and you won't have engines with faster than capability
to get to the next system, so you'll have to build up, like
you could spend several hours building up your engine, that's true, before you
move on. Like it, it sounds like there are very regiment and mechanics
in there, even if they're not out there. I'm still super excited,
so of course, yeah, yeah, I think, but my my excitement
is starting to turn. It it's starting to like crest into fear. I
mean, just just think how many times like we as a whole have been
let down by by very ambitious sounding projects in recent years. Exactly, we've
all been burned in various and like, you know, as much as we
might want to believe wholeheartedly and something like that. It's hard to because they're
saying really incredible things, and that's you know, that's that's usually a sign
that something is probably not actually correct. There. I just I'm keeping my
expectations realistic by taking everything to say it face value. It's like, I
have no reason to doubt the scale and variety of the of the world that
they're creating, and beyond that, I'm not expecting anything else to be there.
So so like I'm happy with what they've said. Alright, you're going
for that. It could be the game, it is, maybe not the
game if it's if that game is tri quarter or the game and you're just
like flying around scanning shit and fair enough analyzing mineral composition and stuff like,
I'll be all right with us. Also, if somehow Morpheus ships next year,
I feel like that game would be incredibly enabled by by VR. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, it's just naked. It's coming out on PC two
but yeah, yeah, well they've said that, but probably it's kind of
like all those things. Yeah, it's not coming on on Xbox One but
PC like a quarter later. Sure. Actually, I think I want to
say when they unveiled it at the press conference at the three. They used
like console exclusive type language or something like that. So what else did they
show at that experience? Man, well, I think fucking news came out
of that thing they showed. That was that the second to last thing they
showed. It was later on for sure because I thought that. Then they
went back and it was Jaffe at the very end to close up a questionable
choice, I think for the order of things. The last thing I'll say
about no man skuy. I mean they did show some like navigating between stars
type gameplay which I wasn't show. There are two videos they posted watching Stargate
sort of thing. Well, there was battle, there was that, but
there was also just almost menu style just selecting another star to like Warp two.
Okay, so there's some there's more meat in there if you want to
go look at it. I want to say. They said five means of
getting around planets or transporting, and like one of them they showed was like
you walking up to like that weird portal. Yeah, there's a weird stargate
And then and there was like I thought there was another shot would look like
literal like star gates, like circles like rings, like. I wonder if
there'll be just other ways of getting around that, yeah, or maybe I
wouldn't be surprised if there's like a deployable like speeder type thing or whatever.
All right, I'm gonna go in the order that I wrote the stuff down.
Okay. Uncharted four opened the show. That looks real good freaking minutes
of them playing Uncharted four live? Would you get out of it? Give
me the give of the bullet points? I kind of cruised through footage because
we missed that when we were watched like I Charted, I do I really
like them charted? Would you play another Uncharted game? Uh? Yes?
Okay? What if Nathan Drake had an older brother that'd be real funny.
What if that older brother was voiced by Troy Baker oh Man? Really?
Yeah? Is it? Is it? Definitely him? I thought it sounded
like it's really weird. What's that I want to say? He confirmed him.
That has got to be the most self aware piece of casting in the
history of video games. And I love it. That's great because their brother,
you know, they sounded like you. When you call him up,
he can he can't tell he's a on. Uh did anybody catch his name
the brother John Drake yea like, oh man, Jonathan Drake Sony's putting his
own people into games. True, that's true. Thing, Now, there
was a lot of there was a lot of like kind of you know,
it's got a whip do well exactly okay, but it's Indiana Jones bro kind
of. I mean that it was a lot of like, you know,
the still looks like familiar Uncharted, but with like X, Y and Z
added to the mechanics. So like, yeah, there was the thing where
he kind of like through grappling hook and sort of like did a swung down,
popped his gun up, grabbed it and then shot another guy. It
was one of those things where like it was very like game demo. He
but it looked awesome. It looked really cool, like I'm stabbing Rocks was
oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, I feel like that's yeah, like
the long demo, Like I appreciate that they're just like we're gonna show a
whole lot of this game. Uh. And then when it was a bunch
of like the same kind of low stakes climbing game gameplay in air quotes that
Uncharted has been up to this point, like I was severely like, oh
right, I I'm not so interested in this game. I was, I
don't know. You see a guy and then you you're below him on a
cliff and then you go around the cliff and pop up behind him and push
him off the ledge. Yeah, that's awesome. But then you creep through
jungle crouched and it looks awesome. That Yeah, it looked really nice.
Cool. There's the stuff where he's sliding down hills like shooting while he's doing
shoot while you're like sliding down a slow There was a lot. There was
a lot of what's there was a lot of him talking yes to himself.
That doesn't look good. I'm that I'm kind of I'm kind of with you.
I was a little bored during parts of that demo. I liked it
when he fell out of the world and died. That was the moment of
that demo for sure. He fell through the world like Assassin's Freed style.
But I mean, I mean, whatever, if anything, it proves like
this was a live that game's got to be a year away, so whatever,
Yeah, totally damn whatever. But I'm not worried about that stuff.
I mean, it looked fantastic. It looked really great, look really great.
It seems like the levels were maybe a little less linear or kind of
bigger open spaces. It seemed like it seemed like there were more pathways through
this kind of cliff side area than there would have been in the past.
Maybe anybody sure gave him that impression. Yeah, if it is linear,
then it's very well constructed, not a little bit well, more like just
like you'd have a lot of options in like combat situations too, coming things
from different angles and stuff like that, but nothing super surprising, Like it
just looks like a really good, solid and charted games. Then it was
eight hours of him fighting blue guys. Oh no, don't remind me about
that part. Yeah, yeah, I don't know if that trailer necessarily made
me feel like it justifies why they're necessarily making another one of those, even
if yeah, it looks so they can hand it off to Troy Baker.
This is just a segue to be like, dah, you know, I'm
done because they have they have, didn't they say? Or something like or
that was the trailers chart of him shot or something. It's called a yeah,
like you're gonna kill Nate And then he's gonna have his brother takeover.
Oh sure, yeah, yeah, well whatever, I mean, you know
the kind of the leads from Last of Us are doing it, So I'm
curious to see what they do with him. A charted game at least,
Yeah, for sure, Like the animation looked real good. Yeah, it
just immediately means it goes dark and gritty or there's this virus. Okay,
I mean it's not what I would have chosen for Naughty Dogs do next,
but like, I'll still if he brings back the fungus. There's there's an
easter egg and turn to three where you find a newspaper and it's like,
oh, mystery Vivers starts spreading, so like it's theorized that it isn't the
same universe. WHOA well, all right, uh since the last podcast,
Street Fighter five got leaked yeah and then confirmed at this thing, I guess
yeah, this would have been the biggest announcement at the experience. It still
was. I mean, you know, even in spite of that stuff leaking
early, I still think they put on a good show, and especially that
hype trailer that was a that was was it a good trailer? You got
to get your explosions in the sky in there to like really give it the
plaintiff edge. So does a new Street Fighter need to have a like new
art style? Do you feel like I think number? Yeah. I was
a little bummed at how similar to four it looks. Yeah. They're also
saying that Ultra is Ultra street Fighter four is coming to PS four next spring,
so which is kind of cool. Yeah, yeah, I like it.
Well, yeah, I mean does that means so far? That just
means it's not coming Taxbox all right, it's a PC. Right, Well,
the Ultra is already out on PC, and Ultra is already out on
Xbox three sixty and p S three. Okay, so that's it's one of
those like you know, let's add another layer to this, like in terms
of this generation the consoles exclusive it's like, well that's crazy, like I
said, but yeah, the street Fighter five is exclusive to PS four and
PC. Okay, forever, forever, forever, very much the same kind
of inky art style. Yeah, Like that was kind of the hook with
the art style in the first place. I mean, besides it being three
D, but they had that brush strokes to me, Yeah, assuming assuming
it's only on that one kick in the in the footage though, right,
it's not all over in the same way it's all over four No, it's
all over the place. Oka. I'm watching it now and like when you're
throwing the hooks everything. Yeah, that that's a bummer. It's not a
really good looking arts. It is like we were looking incredible when it came
out, Like, think about how many years we've been looking at that arts
and I to warm up to that to begin with. Really, yeah,
seriously, the three D stuff up once I made, you know, like
the chew dy style gameplay with the treaty montels, I was okay with it,
begrudgingly accepted it. But it's more than to move on. Yeah,
it's more than just the like the inky hit effects and stuff. I mean,
if you look at the characters, like the proportions are all the same,
sort of the materials and kind of color palette, like everything about it.
Basically it's like you was gonna wear white and yeah, but there something
about I mean maybe it's you know, shaders or whatever. We could put
them in a construction helmet whatever. They'll sell skins, you know. I
mean I had a hard time knowing, Like if you showed me that I
would have a hard time saying there were There were a lot of comments to
the effect, especially when the league happened before it was found a lot of
teaser trailer, yeah, showed footage from four and on the three and like
a bunch of old stuff. But there were a lot of comments to the
effect of like was there a new game in there? Like people that could
not different. I didn't play enough Ultra, like that new that background I
could have been a new background in Ultra and I would be like all right.
In their defense, they put out some still screenshots that I looked at
and like if you look at that thing like that, like those characters are
really detailed like that. Yeah, true, Like yeah, looking at it
and frozen like you kind of see, like, all right, this is
probably the next generation of this art style. I finally watched like a sixty
frames for second trailer with the game plane. It looks pretty amazing. Yeah,
in motion totally. Yeah, I'm interested this kind of see, you
know, because I guess like the implication is that Sony is like helping with
Slash funding yeah development in a way that makes this an actual exclusive word on
the street is that this may not have ever happened without Sony right one for
one reason or another. Yeah, they and they're pretty clear about pointing that
out, trying to not do the tumb rator thing where it's like right,
yeah, I mean they'd say they're like this is the old like this game
will only appear on this platform ever, Like I think, but so that
thinks that leads wiggle room for like a Super street Fighter five that goes on
everything. But I think like that hinges on like what is Sony's role in
development on the game, Like if Sony is actually like working on parts of
this game, then obviously work would carry forward and probably keep it off of
Xbox regardless of what their future versions are. Kind of depends on how big
troubhold Outcom is in right, I guess so, or how bad they needed
to help us. So does that strike you? Is like I feel like
there's something fundamentally different about like a Rise of the Tomb Rader versus like a
Street Fighter going exclusive. I feel like this is like them actually doing the
business. And you know, whether that's good or bad, I think it.
You know, it depends on your perspective on exclusives. But like Rise
of the tomb Rader, like when they make a big deal about that announcement.
I hate it when they do that for tim to exclusives like this in
a case where like theoretically you know this isn't coming ever, you know,
and wiggle room aside, like that's a big deal at that point because that's
insane. No one does that anymore, And that's interesting. But like whether
that's a good move or not, I think it actually probably is. If
you look at the territories where Sony Cells consoles, the street Fighter is a
great fit for all of those territories. I guess I was thinking more it
sucks for the fans, yeah, oh yeah, exclusives always suck for you
know, people that like choice, you know, totally like they they're putting
it on PC. It's cross play across PC and yeah, wild platform and
four. I never thought I would see the day that that would happen with
anything ever, And I'm more surprised if we can actually see it done well
right, they can't even get their PC NETCA culture. Yeah, it was
a fucking wreck. Yeah, on every platform they put out in that patch
in October, mostly in how this is kind of a tangent, but how
seriously does the like hardcore fighting community take PC versions of fighting games. It
really it boils down to net code and if it's like there's no input lag
you know. So I think PS three is like very popular in tournaments,
but Xbox Live is like where it's at like if you're playing online. Okay,
So so yeah, it really varies. They're very very picky about ship.
But I had a pretty good experience with the PC, just the exception
of the neck coode stuff. But yeah, yeah, I don't know,
it's it's a it's a weird one and it sounds like so I guess.
There was a FAMIDSU piece with Ono where he was saying that they weren't originally
going to show that gameplay video here, but because the leak happened, they
bumped that up from the Capcom Pro Tour finals to the Vegas event. This
was this was just kind of an unbroken fight. Yeah, that's right,
So that was originally you know that stuff. The gameplay debut was originally going
to be this coming weekend, Okay, and now they say they have some
other announcement that they're holding for Yeah. I checked this week from from Capcom
earlier today and they're they're talking about a live demo. Yeah, they're going
to do some stuff, so yeah, you're gonna be there. Yeah,
where's that taking place? Right here? And and yeah, I don't know,
like they're talking about this thing like it's going to have features in it.
In some ways, it's like there's something you've all he's been asking for.
I just I don't know what that even is. The same characters,
the same character finally. Yeah, but like you know, in terms of
just like modes or something, I can't really I'm trying having trouble imagining it
could be as far as mechanics. Uh, we didn't see focus stack right
coming back. I saw aush. Yeah, like a lot of stuff that
we've seen in other fighting games, but not necessarily in like street fighter games.
So it's like OTG attacks. Uh, it seems to be kind I
didn't watch I didn't actually watch the video all the way through. Is there
an OG in there? Yeah, you know, a couple of kind of
that's so if you knock somebody on the ground, they're usually invulnerable, Okay,
but hit them there on the ground. I get. I see a
little bit of that jargon. Do you think that the street Fighter is basically
over this idea of being like appealing to everyone, which is kind of like
part of Four's sort of like, ah, we're hard, coordinating, exciting,
we also want everyone to play fighting games. Again. I think that,
like, you know, depending on what they do with the modes that
that you know, that that's where that's determined. I mean, if you
think about the basic level of Street Fighter, I think it's always gonna be
rooted in Street Fighter two. You know, like you're you're gonna throw a
fireball that way, You're going to do a dragon bunch that way. Like
it really is kind of basic. You know, it depends on like what
the advanced levels of play are, Like focus attacks were not, you know,
like I had never got into them because I played it like Street Fighter
two, but they but they are a key part of that game. So
they could very easily do that with a different set of mechanics, you know,
like Street Fighter three head with Perry's like you didn't need to necessarily Perry
unless you were playing someone who knew what the fuck they were doing, and
then you it became incredibly crucial. It was there's a sort of the mistake
you the lull you fall into. It is just like you'd go in playing
it like it was the old game, and then someone who actually plays it
like it's the new game comes in and fucking stomps you, and you either
decide to adapt or just fold. At that point, it just seems like
that's the arc of fighting games is like simplify, then complex complex at more
complexity, until it hits a wall. Then you just start over again,
I guess. But like if if you look at like, you know,
like a street Fighter has never been like ARC Systems level of complexity has never
been Kings. Yeah, but like three, even if a lot of freeze
mechanics are in four, like, it's not you know, it's not entirely
it's not that much more complicated ultimately, you know, it's like the Perry
system I think is scary to a lot of people because it is it requires
you to know what's being thrown at you at any given moment, But it's
not dramatic, Like you can explain that to someone pretty easily. It's just
a matter of whether they're going to be able to do it or not,
or whether they even need to do it for the level that they're playing.
At right. I certainly don't think they're willing to forego making it accessible to
new players in by any means. But yeah, they they've done a pretty
good job, you know, of keeping you know, a five year old
game still relevant and it's still at the top of the heap as far as
you know, the tournament scene is concerned. So they're keeping people interested,
you know, at like new levels, high levels. Whatever. I will
say. When I tweeted my feelings about the art style being too similar,
I got plenty of responses from people to the effect of like, for people
that have been looking at this game for five years, you can see plenty
of differences. I don't see that. I think to the layman, you
look at and go tell me that I look at that both. I look
at that. I don't see any meaningful differences. Both perspectives I think are
valid. Like the hardcore fans are totally going to get a lot out of
it. But yeah, like for people that they need to bring back in
who haven't played it in five years, like it is maybe a hard sell
based on what we've seen so far, it's yeah, it's definitely an upres
but they're keeping that three D style with the brushstrokes and everything. Yeah,
that seems a little too samey. Yeah, well I did a lot of
It will to depend on what kind of what the mechanics are, like how
flashy it gets, and then what the roster is, you know. Yeah,
they only showed two characters. Yeah, yeah, they've only they've only
shown two characters, And that's sort of the I don't know, man,
over the all those upgrades to Street Fighter four, like they kind of added
everybody by the time they were done, right, I mean I can't think
of too many, Like there's a character here and there from like Alpha or
something that maybe you could still scold and maybe well yeah, I mean like
if you want to fucking talk about the Final Frontier, it's I was getting
the Rica characters back in there, because give me fucking c Jack and that
thing the other characters. So but yeah, they were starting to get into
you know, they were bringing back in the Third Strike characters and also like
you know, like Poison, you know, the Atlanta from like CBS the
Greater Capcom universe. Yeah, yeah, which I just I don't know like
that that's where I kind of like I was already in the process of losing
the plot. But that's where I lost it. All the way it was
well, I don't even mean story, I just like I just generally speaking,
like the roster got too big, like I don't really care about you
know, it's like, don't fucking put Cody in this game? How about
that? It's pretty cool, it's too cool. It's the prisoner man fucking
knife promise. Yeah, it just picks up rocks and throws him. He's
got type I don't know, but like you know, like that, those
that tier of characters in terms of just like the story setting always kind of
rubbed me the wrong way. I wish they would just go, like give
me like the Super street Fighter two, cast the new characters from four,
and then new more new characters. That sounds like like, don't delve into
the alpha stuff. And actually, in some ways I wish that instead of
doing street Fighter five, I wish they would have taken like another Alpha detour,
actually just made a new alpha game. As weird as that it,
like, maybe it would be conceptually like I'm used to there being a huge
chunk of time between numbered Street Fighter games. How long was it between two
came out and one? Yeah, and the three was like so that was
eight years eight for four. Yeah. Ye, like I'm used to there
being like, you know, this is pretty fast, yeah, reletive.
It's fast in terms of like, you know, there's still street Fighter four
updates coming out, and we're talking about street Fighter five. There's like Omega
Mode is not out yet. There's a there's a continuity here that there wasn't
in the past, right, and and that's a little weird or it's just
a you know, like Jason's had a testament to the fact that they've rightly
so like maintained that game and not just let it sit. They should have
ram through another dark starters they tried. I know, I don't think that
would go over. Yeah, it wouldn't. It wouldn't. They're probably right
there. There are beautiful things about Large, but but it's it's not the
Street Fighters. Yeah. So it's just I don't know, like I because
I think about it as like, you know, I think about the mid
nineties when like Alpha was coming out and stuff like that, and like the
announcement of Alpha was like some kind of sick joke in a way, like
what do you look so you're so scared of calling games street Fighter three,
that you're doing this other alternate time, like the point that they got to
a third alpha without ever making a proper Street Fighter three, So you know,
that stuff's insane. So that's what I think about when I think about
Street Fighters, like then almost appearing afraid to put out another numbered sequel and
the time, but three and four the same deal. So this just this
just seems like it's hard for me to feel an impact with a game like
street Fighter five the same way you would with the way they've done it before.
And maybe that's I mean, for better or worse. I mean,
I don't know, like it was bullshit the way that they kept like milking
the existing games and doing all this side territory like in a way. But
I guess it depends on the quality of Street Fighter five. Yeah, I
guess. So if it comes out and feels rushed and way too similar in
looking style to Street Fighter four, then you just go like, well,
this should have been Alpha four or definitely yeah, yeah, I don't know.
I mean the relative haste that they announced to five, and also like
things we're hearing about that deal or just the fact that Sony had to step
in like almost makes you wonder about the overall health of Capcom. I mean,
Monster Hund is still Monster Hund's true, you know, So maybe it's
just one of those cases where like you look at Street Fighter specifically and just
go like, wow, you know it's big, but it's not Monster Hunter.
But I don't know. Yeah, that's possible. But you know,
like they've got fuck is that free to play game? Deep down? Yep?
Like where is that? You know? Like? Where are these games
they have been making we're supposedly making? I have no idea. They announced
that the day the PS four was revealed. They showed it at TGS,
did they? I believe, So there's a new trailer. I think that's
where they said it was free to play, wasn't it? I think so?
I don't know. I just man like the Capcom of all old where
is it? You know, like you know what what virus got? It?
Are? Those? Are? How many rising seven we'll get announced next
year? And how many of the people are rising we'll get announced? What
is already seven after what already six was? Like, I don't even know
if I want to see what that is? Hopefully better? I don't know,
but I think Capcom is like suffers from some of the same uh things
that Sega does to an extent where people are always talking about the old Capcom.
They're kind of like a slave to their legacy. Yeah, and at
the same time, I think a lot of the people that are part of
that legacy aren't with the company anymore, you know, Like it's you know,
I think Second gets a way worse because people are like, oh,
Second needs to do this and this and this, Like the people that champion
to those things back in the day are not there to champion them anymore or
have found other things to do with their fucking lives. And you know,
it's you can't expect like this new generation of people to come in and just
immediately want to pick up the torch on all these old franchises that said.
Capcom is not exactly going out there and building a bunch of new ones either.
So yeah, that's that's for me. More, it's just kind of
an overall lack of output, Like where's Dragons talking with two? I feel
like they kind of tried, Yeah, the real question was awesome. Yeah,
like it wasn't a success almost like EA is kind of initiative just kind
of petered out. You know when they went for all those new games,
like yeah, I guess so you know Lost Planet, right, yeah,
yes, you know they're uh, you know, if you read through like
done with jet packs, if you read through like Capcom's financials, like the
way they talk about stuff like they're much more interested in like hits on the
app Store and stuff like that, like making lots of low risk, potentially
high success for you to play games. But because you can make, you
can make twenty of those not a huge random resources, and one can fund
and cover the development of those other twenty and other stuff. So I think,
you know, that's kind of the quandry a lot of you know,
Squaranix talks about that stuff all the time as well. You know, it's
probably a smarter way to do business, but it's also kind of disappointing for
people who grew up with the kind of big Marquis Capcom franchise. It's disappointing
for me that we're talking about a brand new street Fighter in such a somber
tone. That's because how bad off the company is, right, Yeah,
they didn't make you wait for it. Yeah, yeah, you never had
time to want it because it's always been there, right, at this point.
Yeah, yeah, it just feels like last week that we did that
last quick look for whatever the fuck that last version was. Okay, Yes,
who likes the Vita? I love you guys, enjoy a uh coming
to the PlayStation Vita A whole bunch of games. I bet you played most
of them. But still, like you know, it was kind of it's
just like one after the other of just like game after game. Hey,
it's coming out on the Vita. Octo. Dad played it, Banner Saga,
Bastion. I played it on my Chrome browser, broken age. What
is that played? Half played that? Yeah, Towerful, Yeah, it's
a great game. Sweet coding one and or two haven't played it. I
played those. Yeah enough, they don't sweet coding or sweak it in.
I think it's sweak it in. Yeah, whatever, it would be nice.
I kept I was hoping that you could use your Vita as a controller
for TowerFall. M I wish they would add something that's not the worst idea.
Yeah, you know, I mean it's it's nothing super mind blowing,
but they're definitely getting a line up ye going for next year on that thing.
It's a solid yeah, I mean, you know, it's a good
time to have on the stuff. Yeah, the stuff they've been announcing for
Vita for a while now, you know, just like whether it's bringing like
lift Rousers and they're just kind of like indie games out of that platform,
and then what their with their own output has been has been okay as a
backup plan for you know, some of the smaller indie stuff like that,
that platform has got a reason to exist, which is more than you could
say about it. I've been enjoying the cross play functionality like in a rogal
legacy. Yeah, so I do appreciate that. I would like to play
through Basting again on the Vida. I think Banners saga is a good gut
Yes, that was kind of got an unexpected one actually that that one's pretty
impressive as BANNERSAA too at the game ward, Yeah, they didn't we have
you have you been playing you mean sticking with Freedom Wars at all? I've
been trying to. Yeah, I did like a stream like one Sunday for
like three or four hours and yeah, just still tutorial stuff streaming from a
PlayStation TV. Yes, but yeah, once the stuff slows down early spring,
I think, you know, and there's nothing else to play and you
dedicate it. Yeah, yeah, maybe I really wanted maybe. Wow,
there's a lot of crap to get through. So did they say Broken Age
that will be the full game? So yes, Broken Age coming to PS
four and Vita same day as so at like the second half basically on Okay,
So I guess presumable you'll you'll I hope. I don't think they clarified,
but I would hope you get the full game, would imagine. Yeah,
yeah, so that's cool. Uh. Speaking of Capcom Resident Evil Revelations
too coming to the Vita, I don't think that had been announced obviously.
Which ones that comes out in February? Yeah, that's Claire Redfield and very
is that what I think? Barry Barry Revelations was not great, but like
it was getting there better than side stories from US. Yes, parts parts
of Revelations really dumb and it went on too long, but like there was
like the framework of a good Resideval game in there. The Residuaval universe is
a mystery to me at this point. Has anybody here not made a Residueval
game at this table? I mean, Coron, that's a pretty good one.
Yeah, I like that part with the moth lady. Yeah, that's
part. I mean, you know, we were all okay with it at
that point, but at that point we were also sick of the fucking genre.
I just couldn't believe were in making the games again with I made Raccoon
City Stories. I was drunk. Sorry, that was a night. Yeah,
it's a weird day. Yeah, like naked with a copy of game
Maker. Alright, mat of unlocking the liquors? Do you have it?
The letter? Uh? So more news? Uh speaking of Sony just getting
out there and making the deals that nobody makes anymore. Yaka's of five is
coming to the US. So what what Yak's five for them? That is
the current Well there was also Dead Souls, which was not a number of
the Zombe. So that's coming over, I tells coming over, came over,
those came over. Yeah, they speak. Yeah, I want to
say one through three year available in the US, did quick yeah, quickly?
Yeah, and I think four? Okay they made it before making out.
Yeah, yeah that's what it was. They were on sale and yeah
they put them on But yeah, like, is that just Sony paying for
the localization of Yaka's A five? Probably, I don't know, Like it's
it's you know, they often talk about you know that you you heard them
mentioning it, almost like they were proud of it in a way and wanted
to make sure it got mentioned in part of this stuff as like our third
party production unit is working on and that seems to be like they're like their
solution to a lot of problems in term when it comes to like making things
happen that wouldn't happen otherwise, as they just go, well, we'll fucking
do it, which is cool. Yeah, it's awesome, Like it's crazy,
but it seems like the right way to handle it, especially when you
get to these things that you know, I'm sure like I'm some love it.
They must crunch the numbers on something like Yakuza five and go like,
well, we know if we can turn a profit on this because the game
is done, localization will cost this. We know we can project We're not
going to do voice actors. Yeah, we just need to subtitling. Assume
it's assumed that that's yeah, they've been doing that for a while yea,
yeah, since the first one. Kind of what Atlas was doing for a
long time, just bring himself over and localizing it, Yeah, sort of
kind of you know, but you know, like for Sony to just go
like, well, you know, we're gonna be our own best, uh,
you know, fighter for these platforms. Like you know, like you
think about all that stuff that shows up on the Vida, it wouldn't happen
if they didn't have a team of people out there fighting to get it on
there. Yeah, if you look, I mean in all like the vast
majority of cases of like indie cross by games on Vita, Yeah, there's
an extra developer logo and like the line up of credits at the beginning.
Yeah, and then because they're Sony pays for those yeah right, and they
don't like you know, there's a lot of the way those deals are structured
is that, you know, the Sony approach is an independent developers saying like
we'd like to bring your game to beat MPs four and they're like and they're
like, we're not. We don't have the money or the people engineering.
You know, Like for example, like a lot of these games that are
made in like GameMaker and stuff, like we're like prior to getting native PS
four Sport, it's just like they do not have the ability to to do
that. So Sony just says they already have studios to sign, like hey,
it's you know, like Curve Digital and studios that are good at some
other one that's done a couple of anyways in the Galaxy Abstraction, Yeah,
that's yeah, but like Abstraction did Legacy. Yeah, basically, they just
show up. They say we'll pay for it. You get you know,
cut of the profits, and but Sony does all of the heavy lifting.
So a lot of these are not like developers psych for Sony. I mean
they're psyched, but they're Sony's approaching them with like a deal. You just
literally connect psych because they're getting rescued. Every single question gets answered. Or
that's what that's the impression I get is that developers might come in and go,
oh, well we can't do it. We can't. It's like,
well we could do it, and we'll give you this much money, Like
how about we just let us give us you give you some free money,
we'll put your game on our platform. Because they have these studios that that
Sony's already you know, partnered with, that have become very they really understand
the Sony infrastructure and they understand all these like independent engines, So it's really
like for those guys and a miniscule amount of work to get up and running,
and it benefits everybody and it's really smart crazy party, especially even how
bad their first party output is right now, Yeah, the party team is
you know, that's one thing you could take away from the PlayStation experience was
like lots of really interesting like third party announce but like what's like the Order.
The Order like a half game, now, you know what the hell
like? That game comes out in February and the part they chose to show
was like a crappy corridor, bad looking Gears of War section. It's like
that's and then fill it full of cut scenes. You know, that's a
quick time events. It's kind of just what they've that's showing. Yeah,
that's that's what it looked like at E three. Also, like, you
know, the part I played back then was very pretty, very pretty like
aggressive, and you know, the weapon design was interesting and stuff, but
at the core of it, it was like, well, this is kind
of like a weird cover. This is you just you guys made a cover
shooter with slightly weird guns, Like I don't this isn't that demo E three
was maybe ten minutes long total. If if that, Yeah, the order
is a huge question mark, I think for sure. But I feel like
you could say that about a lot of Sony's first part. I mean there's
stuff that, like, you know, Uncharted obviously has a huge track record,
a massive track record of being incredible, and stuff like three maybe not
so much. But you know, like it's a safe bet that that's going
to be a pretty good game. I would think. They they announced that
they're gonna do a new God of War. Yeah, I was talking about
it on Twitter. Uh and like you know, he was, you know,
the lead on Got to War two, which is probably the best God
of War game, that one. I mean, yeah, that that one
is a little Yeah, I just never liked God of War. Sure,
so that's if you like gout of War, which I do. Yeah,
like two two is the one. Yeah, Like I don't know that they
should be making another God of War. That's a bigger question. But but
yeah, why not? And if they do, they need to do something
dramatically and then like you know what Japan doing, is it all hands on
deck? Yeah, not a fucking peep about that game at this thing.
Yeah, if they are going to actually do that that you probably don't do
it here. Oh, I mean this is the only one. The only
people they're running on a pose and the only people that still care about that
game are the diehard faithful that are paying attention to that event. So I
feel like that would be actually be well, it was just like when you
look in totality of like the announcements that event, you know, where you
get square to walk up on stage. Oh my god for fans. No,
you're blowing, you're blowing my finale here. Okay, sorry, we'll
get to that. Okay. Speaking of disappointing non announcements, though, remember
when they said PERSONA five yeah, and then proceeded to say nothing. Yes,
you know, I think the only the only tid bit to come out
of that was, if I mean interpreting their wording, it sounds like it's
coming out in North America after the Japanese release. Yeah, which that that
was no, But I want to say that they hadn't necessarily confirmed PS four
for North America. Really, Uh, they never actually said the world yeah,
yes, yeah, it was PS three and then they're like it's coming
to PS four. Also, I didn't I think this is the follow up
saying like that one's coming over to a duh. That was always just assumed
for me. Yeah, yeah, you know, I think that was just
one of those things where that's you know, they're probably looking at like,
well, what could we announced that this thing in December, which is a
weird time to hold this show. Yeah, you know that that's just one
word. I just might as well mention it show a piece of art or
something. Well, that's up to Atlas at some point, right, I
mean, that's a big reveal. But you're Sony, You've you've got some
pull, you know, and you need to get some concept like Jack Frost,
don't you know, Like that's that's a popular franchise in Japan. Like
I think I feel like showing significant stuff in the US first would be like
you show a character you're giving your hand away. It's a bear, he's
got a zipper around his head. Hug. I can't let the competition see
what you're cooking up. Yeah, it'll play that one close to the vest
because I assume it's got to be all new. It's gotta be they've said
it basically, right, that's how they do those. Yeah, So like,
well that's sometimes they'll bring in Yeah, like a little reference. It's
like a sixty year old Chia shows up at some point, Yeah and kicks
him. Ask takes place in the far fork tank into somebody. It's like
ten Chi a clones show up and you have to fight him. All right,
they're taking you. So yes, Katamari Demassi creator Kata Takahashi came out,
so should sort of reveal that he's Japanese your project? Yes? What
did he say? He said? He said, I'm Jeff, he said
he he came out and he basically said hello, I'm Japanese, and it
only got reverder from there. He is made one of my favorite human beings.
The best thing about that whole segment was confirming to me that he is
exactly as weird as he would expect him to be to have made that game.
Why was he holding a fork? Was holding a plastic fork the whole
time? He's probably eaten backstage and then like twirling around at various points.
So while his partner was Robin Huna, that game company uh and is So
I'm not clear what the business arrangement is. Do they do they co found
a studio or it's not funen Yes, phenomenal, yes, okay, yeah,
and she's been there. I mean the two of them started it together.
Okay, yeah, they basic based on la like basically after Journey shipped,
you know, released, uh like everyone but jenovichen like Chris Bell,
who's one of the prison designers on Journey is working on that new game from
Giant Sparrow, Vanishing of what remains of Finch. Yes so yeah. But
anyway, while while Robin was giving the whole spiel about the game, he
was like sort of rotating on his feet in the doing whirl perfect just like
he just he seemed like, you know, an overstimulated six year old that
just had nothing to do with himself. So he was just having fun by
himself. So it was it was wildly entertaining. What's the game? I
don't know. It's it's a little block with a hat that blows out him.
He's a mayor, okay, the mayor of the It's in detail that
I was able to pick up is that he is apparently a mayor of some
kind. Okay, Like it looked like I don't remember. Is that kid's
book called like Happy World. There's some kind of world captain underpants. Captain
Underpants goes outside and then puts on a hap it puts on a different happen.
He's got a bomb, but they're all the same hats the same man.
And then he goes outside and here an explosion go off, and that
was it? Whimsical? Were those rough? Were those even video game graphics
or was that like a I mean they seem like they could, but it
was that like a papercraft stop motion thing, like I'm not sure that looked
like video game. Was that a video game? Yeah? Yeah, no,
no indication of what that game is though, says on the PlayStation blog.
Ever, this game came from when Keto was playing with his two year
old son and wondered about what if all toys lived and were connected to one
another. It'd be such a fun world to explore and play with the word
should watch? Yeah? Is that? How do we know? How?
Like what tam I would wattam itself is actually composed of the word the mule
and Japanese words were making a circle or making loops. So I guess like
it might be a multiplayer game in whichever one was connected in some fashion,
which like if you look at Noby Noby boy. Yeah, he is interested
in like asynchronous what's a girl up to these? Yeah? I don't know.
Girls. Huge got me the only person I know. He still does
that as Brandon Boyer updates on Twitter every couple of weeks with an update.
Noby Noby boy, this iPhone. There's a spacecraft pushing Pluto. Yeah,
in real life, in our world, and Pluto's a planet again? Right,
No, I have they changed back. It's still they were reclassifying a
thing. Actually and I were talking. They were talking that there might actually
be a couple of planet bodies outside beyond Pluto even uh, sort of existing
in some other gravitational orbits you met in our solar system. But further out
are you talking about and are you talking about the Kaiper Belt or the Orc
Cloud. I don't know it might even be. I don't know if it's
within or outside of that, but it's it's dayne Kuyper doesn't wear a belt.
It's kind of does near the citadel, but not quite as far as
the citadel. But Pluto is still not on a planet. No, it's
not get your ship together, science. It did. That was the whole
point of reclass five. Nope, all right, science is hard man.
Moving on more stuff coming to PS four. Anybody remember Darkest Dungeon Nope,
the side scrolling sort of strategy RPG with the rosy psychological effects, Like,
yeah, got that amazing, like still art style. What's that? Is
it turning wiggly wiggly like Waight animates? Yeah? Maybe? What am I
thinking? It? Wiggly is not how I would describe it. It's a
bunch of like two D it's like still art, but they like kind of
animate the limbs like never ending nightmare ish flat. Oh it looks so good
and then like the people get like scared of dark and like scared of zombies
and stuff like that. People. Yeah, okay, oh yeah, that's
coming to PS four. Only I don't think this would beta. That's earlier
today while we were while we are podcasting that it's really accessed on February third.
Oh shit, awesome, Okay, great, Yeah, they had I
think they've been shooting for by the end of the year, but that's not
too far off. I guess I thought it packs. It looks Yeah,
we've seen that at multiple packs as the at least one of the developers as
a fan of the site, and it looks fantastic. So take everything we
say with Green soult obviously, uh, super Time Force. What's the only
thing that Coulture better? If they put an executive from Sony and I guess
sure that sounds about right. I'm not sure how to feel about that.
Close the loop on this crazy shit man bucket, I guess go for bro
do whatever makes you happy. I mean, you know, short of Jack
Trenton, I guess shoot Yaheta is a pretty good person to put in there,
Jack or a boss. Oh yeah, they're not gonna get his rights.
Yeah, so they're adding him to this, to the super Time Force.
And doesn't he shoot Twitter? Like shoots? Yeah, he shoots.
We've tried to get the Jack Tretton rights in the past. It's very difficult,
it's true. Yeah, he associations ongoing yep, yeah, yeah,
yeah, he shoots like hashtags and stuff out of his phone. Sure in
that game? Uh yeah, sure. I don't know. It's weird.
What if that's a funny include, like you know, included character for the
Sony universe. It's like Vibery Nope, shuyasha. It makes me wonder sometimes
like stuff like this, Like I always feel like you know, the executives
at video game companies or like, like, the audience that's aware of that
is very small. Yeah, but if they're making it into video games as
characters. Now, let's think about the audience for a game like Super Time
for it's fair, you know, and and you know, the people that
are care enough about games to care about them all big and small. The
ones that care that much are a little more likely to be connected, are
a little more likely to understand why putting shoo Yashita in a video game is
pretty fucking incredible slash insane? Why not? Sure, but they're doing a
pretty good job with rebranding. Like, they're making themselves look fun, They're
making themselves, they're making them be irrelevant. They're doing a really I think
they're doing pretty like Like I think the like the parody between two Friends videos
were a bit much because it's like, you're parodying a comedy thing. Yeah,
some kind of a comedy thing for yourself. A little that's that's rough.
But yeah, by and large, they've been pretty good. Sure that
a lot of that stuff. Uh. The last thing I got on here
is what remains of Edith Finch The Grantsparer game. Who made the unfinished Swan?
Yeah? What is that, you finch? I don't I watched the
trailer. I don't know what that is. Probably some sort of esoteric adventure
game. Yes, there's some kind of mystery guns could be another fucking walking
simulator. How is that the only thing you have? Man? The last
thing you have? Wait, hang on, fucking Day of the Tentacle is
kind of god, that's right, that's right, that will Yeah. Also
we need to get indignitated about final fancy. Sorry, I've also entered the
gungeon. Oh god, all right, I'm sorry. I had to put
this list. Uh oh, you know what I skipped over? I skipped
over those those were further up the list. But I was trying to go
in somewhat chromolaunch quarter. All right, where do you want to start Day
of the Tentacle? Cool? Great announcement, So but what is it?
I thought? Yeah, so I thought they called a special edition, So
that what they're going because they can't they can like redraw the art. They
did have to. I think they are because I think there was some implication
that like a lot of the art was hand drawn to begin with, so
you almost could just say, well, what if they scanned it in a
higher resolution. But uh oh, you're saying that this stuff you see on
the screen was hand drawn and drawn and scanned in Yeah, huh, I
don't know. I just wonder how that game would look if it weren't all
pixelate. So we couldn't they just redraw one to one so that they can
fit modern aspect ratios, like it would still be a four three games.
They just it would be. Well, how it's Grim Fandango. So that's
where all of it. No, that's where I got tripped up on this.
So before the day of the technicalle announcement, they showed in the trailer
for Grim Fandango, and the wording there is remastered, right, Grim Fandango
remastered. The characters look like nice and modern and like high res with nice
lighting applied, but the backgrounds to be the backgrounds yea from the original game
yep. So like, if you look closely, it's like these nice,
clean characters. Yeah, on kind of a pixelated, like not super modern
looking background was a little jarring. So after I came to that realization,
I was like, well, maybe this data the technical thing is not as
exciting as it sounds. But like you could You've got an older game,
so maybe they have to do more art. I think you could do the
void the audio, get clean audio, right, Yeah, they hire if
it exists, if they still and then tweak the controls so you do context
sensitive stuff so it's not as scum engineer, so that it's you know,
you can maybe have direct control. I mean it's all two D stuff,
so it's it's a little funky. Yeah, like maybe you're not moving a
mouse on the screen on a console. May they did that Monkey Island maintained
the the mouse control stuff, like it was just mapped to the analog stick.
It's doable, and it was fine. It's a great adventure game,
and I'm happy that more people will get the chance. I've never played it.
Yeah, I got in the shape for train later than its great.
Then is that one of them? Is that Schaeffer Like I always feel like,
I mean, wasn't Ron Gilbert still around at that point? I don't
really keep track of the lineage that that one. That one always gets a
little muddy for me because like maybe his like debut, I've always Thoughtful Throttle
was Tim Shaffer's first like proper game maybe, but I think here. He
definitely worked on Technacle. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was around.
But I think I always feel like, well, no, okay, Dave
Grossman and Tim Shaffer co led development. He's got a great credit sequence in
the beginning. Just watch it again. Yep, you know, cars driving
around, They're on their way to stupid old mansion. Yeah, maybe we'll
see. I mean, you know, at least at least Disney seems to
be open to continuing the license and stuff out or letting someone else do the
work license it out. Yeah, yeah, we don't give a shit about
this. It's almost like someone in at Disney who would be able to make
these kind of deals and someone Sony who would make this kind of deals used
to be roommates or something. That's weird. It's weird. Yeah, well,
however came about glad that it's happening. But I do, like,
I do really really like Grand Fandango, but that day with the tentacle announcement
kind of took some of the windows that and be like, well kind of
now just one day of the tempt Yeah, exactly like I I don't really
like I didn't actually play through all of Grand Fandangle to come out it was
kind of on the tail end of adventure games so liked. But Day of
the Tentacle for me is like very much like that's the Wheelhouse. That's like
like Maniac Mansion was so incredible, and when they made the sequel and it
talked that what it's fucking less Nestman from w KRP plays Bernard. This is
real. Yeah, it's the voice acting is really good. Oh. I
hope that stuff still exists. I hope Bernard to make sure that's in there.
Yeah. Like I said, I only ever play Sierra stuff, so
I'm super excited to try these classic games. Yes, if you I feel
like if you played Day of the Tentacle, yeah, and then look at
some of the Siaharra stuff, you will say, I'm pretty sure I played
Maniac Mansion. I don't think I ever actually played Day of the Tenant.
Very different games. Yeah, it's just not Zach mccrack. I'm just saying
you'll you might see. Lie I'm holding up for Zack mccrack and especially here
comes you go to Mars. Uh. Let's see. So that was the
Double Fine stuff. Uh, Drawn to Death? It was oh well okay,
yeah, so there was that final thing there was kill Strain Killster.
Yeah. I didn't even get too much into what that is. The guy
just got out on stage and said, we're making a free to play game
for you because you like it. It is just like it was kill Strain.
Kill Strain is the They didn't show it, but they're taking sign ups
for it, and it's a free to play game, some kind of overhead
shooter. It's got to be a fake video Wait, so that's a fake
video game killing flour two. No, that's coming to us four though they
know. There was this weird appeal from the guy out there announcing it.
It was like, you know, like before he even said anything about the
games. It's free to play, but it's not paid to win. It's
not like like just defending it before he even said what the game was.
Oh, that always goes over real. Well, yeah, and they're taking
out of sign ups and stuff. But it's just I don't know really what
it is, but it was just a weird. It was a very ham
fisted an announcement. Sure all over on that one. Uh so, yeah,
it's Killing four two coming to PS four or The Forest coming to POS
four. Just one thing after another getting announced into the gungeon. Does a
new announced enter the gungein. Yes, so we got to play a little
bit of that. Yeah, devolvers putting that out. Yeah, it looks
a lot like Nuclear Throne. Yeah, it controls a fair amount like nuclear
Throne. Yes, it is not necessarily one hundred percent nuclear throne. Oh.
Yes, it's a lot like Nuclear Throne. I mean, but it's
more of a dungeon, but a gungeon. It is a good name.
You're going through rooms and yeah, you're going through rooms and floors. Also,
most of the enemies are giant ammo. Yeah, so it's a giant
shotgun shell with little feet shooting a shotgun. Blast set you I had,
I had a bat coming out me. That was just a bullet with wing
with bat wings, bullet with butterfly wings, no bat wings. The world
is a vampire. World is a vampire. That's the truth. A grenade
that walks at you and you shoot it blows up. Yep. Okay.
You know you can walk up to tables and knock them over and use them
as cover and stuff like that. There's cool like it. It looks really
nice, Yeah it does. There's some crazy guns in it, as I
have expected. Nice like retropixel art, but with modern looking lighting effects on
it. Kind of stuff. Uh, Dodge rolls the name of the I
guess they're x x E A mythic. Okay, guys. The the Steam
build they sent the sent us for preview had like a just a gun test
debug thing in it. So it's just sitting there cycling through all these guns.
There's a gun called x Calder that just shoots swords. Uh, there's
a gun that is literally just a cactus that's like shooting spikes, like spines
everywhere. It's really dumb stuff. Yeah, it seems like it's got like
a lot of flavor, you know, it seems it seems like it could
be really cool. That seems like a cool game. I take Nuclear Thrownes
better just my that's my earliest that's my early assessment, all right, for
a game that looks a whole lot like Nuclear that's fair in a way that
you're like, man, you guys doing that's fair? That trailer because we
saw that trailer before we checked out the game, and it's like, dude,
what do they why are they seems kind of fucked up? The two
that's you know, it seems like it's got enough of its own. Yeah,
it's own vibe, all right. Drawn to death David Jaffee closing the
show, calling out cars two thousand. Oh, I forgot about that one.
That is a I think if it was nineteen ninety seven and Jaffee just
put out Twist Medal two and I was thirteen years old, I would be
all about drawn to death. But just watching that trailer, uh, it
just looks like the gameplay just seems super dated. Four players, isn't it's
four player arena? Yeah? Wait really yeah? And some and some of
them. I guess that, you know, restricting the player count is kind
of an interesting idea. So wait, is it? Is it four player
co op versus AI? I think it's four players against each other. They're
more on four. What was that shitty anarchy rains that sega? Yeah,
that was kind of question I got and all in that that game was black
and white? Right now? Do you think Mad World? Think the guy
from Mad World is in anarchy? Okay, yeah, that's the beat him
up? That was two years ago. But then it was also it was
like, was Bayonetta in that? No? But it Platinum made it?
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, good kids, It's not good at all.
That's of this reminded me. Yeah, and it's also to be like
you're inside the notebook of like the kid from the Pearl Jam Jeremy video and
ye like it said like wait did they say that? I thought they just
said thirteen year old kids? Like that was the gist of it. Yeah,
like the violent stuff and it was troubled kid kah yeah, and just
a lot of scribblings from whatever. And it doesn't look I mean, I
think the last time a game was pitched with that premise was brutal Legend and
I was way into that stuff. Like, I don't know, this does
not seem like the notebook scribblings that I want. The game looks bad too.
Nothing about it looks interesting, Like I don't think the art. I
don't think they pull off the art style that they're going for. Probably something
like Mad World has done like a similar like just you know, graphical treatment.
Yeah better, ye know, Well that was the impression I got.
This is this is a real snap judgment. But I don't know that like
wallpapering everything with just like notebook lines, Yeah, it was the way to
go. You know. I kind of have that stuff on the margins,
but still sort of give a reality the thing. It feels random in a
way that it doesn't come across as like a cohesive aesthetic. You know,
we stalked, so I think O'Dwyer played it okay, you know we should
we should ask him kind of what he thought about it. But yeah,
just going off that trailer and some of the other stuff they were showing,
Yeah, it seems like a lot of clothes. You know, they're they're
they're making a big you know, it says pre alpha and big letters on
the corner of the screen at all times, so they're trying to be clear
that it's not done. But that's another thing. They're taking sign ups for
their website somewhere for that. I think the I hadn't heard this. I
don't know if that had gotten out before, but I think the bigger news
was David Jeffe's company name. Yes, oh yeah, that's been that's been
around. They've been around. I think I might have heard it, but
I feel it. Yeah, what is it? It's the Bartla god something
detective agency or Bartlett. Yeah, James detective agents have to figure this out
now, vanishing of Detective Bartlett. What remains are President Bartlett? How long
can this take? It seems like a lot of forced edginess, and it
were like every time you shoot the shotguns, fuck you. Yeah, it's
like fuck you on the screen. And so, yeah, it's David.
It's that kind of Yeah, it kind of feels maybe it's being it feels
like an old guy trying to be cool. Yeah, well, I mean
I doubt you know, I don't think he's I think that's true David putting
on an act. Yeah, like I think it's David Jaffee. I guess
this just isn't cool then, But you know, I don't think he's like
putting on a show. No, I'm not saying he's being fake, but
you can be out of touch. Yeah, it'll be like John Romero coming
out and making like a new Doom in exactly the same way that Doom was
doomed? What's wrong with that? And I don't know that sounds appreciated you
with the stomach until you just plug. Are you saying that Drawn to Death
is trying to make me it's bitch? Is that what you're going for?
That was that was coverage of you know, uh, the Bartlett Jones Supernatural
detective agencies name the name of his studio, right, and so for the
first game from that studio to be that, it's like, man, that
is entirely they were gonna announce the game and it was just gonna be called
the same name as the studio. You'd be like, all right, like
jab Harold's Murder Club back. I thought they make you like a like like
a Ghostbusters type thing, and like because he's done, he does. He
does actual ghost hunting in his spare time, like he does. Why didn't
he make that game? Oh yeah, oh god, yeah, you're right.
I can't read this. This is too weird. He should have just
made an FMV game of all that I know, his own, like cam
Quarter Experience and then like night Trap just like Push Left. Oh no,
jeffy ye. So wait, he's doing ghost hunting for real. Yeah,
he's doing it his spare time for money. I mean, I guess,
I don't know if he's actually making money at it, but he's doing it.
Here is a quote from him in this Polygon story. This is from
a while back. I think this is hang on only double check. I
think this is when he first It's when I got founded. Yes, this
is This is from September when he first like announced the studio. Here's this
quote. Hang on, scroll back to it. We have a publisher and
checks from the publisher that funday percentage of the company. The rest comes from
Bartlett is about drawn to death. It's just about like how they're paying to
make this game. Okay, David Jaffee and company. Okay, David Jaffe
is hunting ghosts. So it seems to me that there was some kind of
hook in that thing he kept talking about that was the world would evolve or
something like the stuff about evolving world. You'll learn stuff about the boy who's
drawing this, because you'll see him scribbling about his girl friend and his parents
and like the environment, and so you'll learn about this character this it's a
young fred Durst. I'm sure it contains multitudes. You know, he'll be
a fascinating personality to uncover. Actually, if fred Durst is doing like vo
for this, even more interested. Ye. So yeah, but that was
not to me. The craziest thing about that press conference, was it,
Well, I only have one more thing. So was it the same thing
that I'm thinking it might be the same thing? Was it fine? Fantasy?
It was the biggest repeal and then holy ship biggest fucking like that went
over. Well, oh my god, have I have? I never been
more glad to be following along on Neo gabs as a live stream goes along,
Like at this point, is it like these live reactions from people losing
their shit? I really I was then losing their ship. I was watching
with Patrick. And then at some point they're showing the final Fantasy seven uh
in set graphic, you know, they're showing the gameplay inside the thing.
He's like, this is it isn't it? No, No, it's not
gonna blow out. Was like, no, it's gonna it's gonna get bigger.
And then like they're gonna like cook cross face. He's like the after
and then it's like like they bring out, you know, the guy from
Square like Japan, like the actual Square in Japan, they brought out the
actual Square as opposed to I mean, he wanted some random producer like he's
like the guy. What I mean is like a lot of times these days,
Square nix effectively means idos right Square like the Western Square innex that's making
idost type games. But you know what I mean is like here is a
an announcement from the Japanese arm of Square. And then he's all, it's
been seventeen years and just immediately like like no, there are they really finally
gonna do it? Are they finally gonna do it? Oh, he's a
port of the PC version And he said that, he said straight upset.
It was like as if that was something to be excited about. It's like
we're reporting. I don't remember how he phrased it, but it's like,
here's the superior PC version. Goodness, here's the here's the version of record
of Final Fantasy seven. And then afterwards when he like did the forced generation
of applause, you could kind of tell us like a yeah, yeah,
it was real Marth applause just real, yeah, just squeing. Wow.
That was incredible. That was That might have been the moment of that whole
keynote. It was, yeah, what a bait and switch, and like,
yeah, there's so much but like you bring the guy out, you
fly the guy out, like it takes the stage. You're gonna say the
words Final Fantasy seven, these people's faces and then show some four by three
bulls in set and on a graphic and then walk off stage like fuck you,
Like that's great, that's incredible. You're right, yeah, Hey the
show was in December. You know you gotta get whatever announcement. Yeah,
sure, sure. He just felt like that should have been a part of
like when like Guo is doing like banging through announcement was coming to PS four
and VTA or whatever. It's somebody, somebody who planned that show must have
known how that was gonna go over. That's probably closed. I wonder if
it's just some some level people want something like that in the show, just
some people remember it. Maybe it's like remember it all right, a friend
deal between like Japanese high level businessmen that's like, oh no, we'll go
on stage you love fac if you're gonna love Vegas, like we'll bring it
out. Yeah. It's one of those things where like Japan just sends the
word down to the US team you're going to make fifteen minutes in your presentation
available to Square for their announcement of Final Fantasy seven, And you're like,
you know, then maybe the U S side is saying like that's not gonna
work and everyone's gonna hate that. You realize you're crazy, right right.
I don't just bring someone out and say, yes, we're making Grand Tourismo.
Would be a better time spent. Don't even just have someone drive out
in a car to say we're making a card game. That would go better,
like honestly, like a a drive club apology hour, Like well no,
we my my, I might we will have the segment that's playing like
okay, oh my goodness, do you guys call the shots? That's incredible?
Yeah, so yeah, maybe it is how it went down. I
don't know. Uh, yes that was. It was a thing, a
thing, so like yeah, I can you even do that and then have
a remake in like the next five years. I don't even want to remake.
I just want this to happen over and over. Yeah yeah, it's
you know who wants to play through like the sixty hour, ninety nine hours,
the Final Fantasy again seven and then then I'm ready. I'm ready for
the remake. You think they are they? Is this just a classic or
are they gonna like put trophies in it and put it out as like a
PSN release, Like I would assume that they would put it in better at
least put fucking trophies in it, I guess. So, yeah, was
vib Ribbin. Did that go into classics? That was a class that was
emulated? Yeah, yeah, because is a PC game, so they would
have I think there are didn't come to PS four because of that. I
think there are Steam achievements for that game. So yeah, that's true,
that's true. You're right, yeah, you're yeah, right, they did.
They did Steam. They didn't like because they put out Finally seven on
PC. Itdos published it right ironically, like like way back in the day,
and that version like was high rez but was was not particularly great.
Yeah, the hack like people modified it way to get in better space.
But they've done some significant work to get the PC version like decent okay with
like resolutions and what you ask if like people would would turn around and play
that game again, like isn't Square didn't like box Art leak out a Final
Fantasy ten ten to HD remaster for PS four like leak out today that yeah,
like you know, like clearly whether people wanted it or not, Square
thanks they do so, but that one, that one is is just new
enough that they didn't have to do that much to it. You know,
it's just a higher ris right totally. And but I mean, but even
I'm saying, like, you know, just after they brought out that on
p S three and other stuff, they're gonna do it for PS four.
Yeah, clearly the year into this level of sure, fuck it, man,
just put it out. Sure, sure, Just like, what does
a proper full on remake of Final say seven cost at this point? Well,
think about That's what they've said every single time. It was like,
what you guys want, would we can't do it? Scale of what to
do it would be the scale is which is so expensive five years long?
Like, it's the scale of the scale of that game today with modern production
values is like break them. I'm just imagining them building that that thing in
fucking Contact, the big giant fucking orb. Would they make both the nations
and then it like comes out and this explodes and it's just like, but
we built the backup Final Fantasy seven, like it sunk seven nations, but
we built it so it'll never happen. Because what you're saying it was a
lot of content in that game. It's yes, I guess it'd be a
lot of voice actor because you'd probably need voice acting right at that point.
Yeah, you would, you'd have to voice cloud at that point Wolf.
Yeah, but don't do this, you know, go go and redo every
one of those cut scenes to modern standards. I just don't. Yeah,
I don't see them ever doing it. Rewrite the whole narrative so that you
can bring Eras back to live oh Man with I wonder if they'd be tempting
if I may have played Devil's Advocate for a moment. I'm not the biggest
proponent of Final Fantasy seven, but it's a helpful lot better than what they've
been doing lately with that franchise. Yeah, we need more cool snowboarding.
I would rather play seven. There's a lot of weird stuff in that game,
like the three Final Fantasy thirteen games, Like nope, no thanks,
all right, does anybody else have anything from the PlayStation experience we have not
discussed. Uh, that is pretty freaking cool. Yeah, it sounds like
it was. It sounds like it was a good event from the like the
kind of experience. It seems effective for them in terms of getting news out
there about their platform at a time when like the competition is not saying anything.
Yeah, happy anniversary. Sure, yeah, yeah, twenty years right.
Do you think they do it again or is just they already said they're
doing it again. Oh really they did well, same time frame, haven't
said, but I wouldn't be surprised, you know. I think there was
the game awards and places experience kind of built off the back of each other.
I would not be there. There are no other trade shows or conventions,
there's anything in December right now, So that's a good spot for them,
and you get people out, you know, for you know, that's
just like there's more to do and it's all you know, And you know
what that means that the original meaning of PSX is now lost to us forever.
Yeah, yeah, it's no longer a PS two with the DVR built
into it. Is this like just one step closer to E three being completely
think irrelevant in terms of a public Well oh yeah yeah. E three should
not be a public show. E three maybe shouldn't be a show. Maybe
it's one. It's definitely one step closer to ensuring that the John Drake is
on the road three hundred sixty five days. Well that's that's all I'm interested
in, and and a bunch of us along within like a just like trade
show after trade show at this point, keep those people worn down and crazy.
Like look at the level of the announcements at the PlayStation experience, right,
Like it's it's a lot of downloadable stuff, it's a lot of indie
stuff, I think, I mean, a little little teases of the Triple
A stuff, but like the big announcements are still gonna happen eighty three.
I mean, I still think like Street Fight or five is an E three
press conference level announcement. You know that that's a huge fucking deal for sure,
especially the way they're going about it, uh, being in exclusive like
I'll getting credit for that. That's stuff nuts. But I think, you
know, I think to that point, I don't think you know, it's
not a trade show, right, this is supposed to be a public thing,
and and it's how they can get away with like here's this long,
fucking uncharted demo, right, you put that in front of like the assembled
press. At some point they're gonna go like, yeah, you're fucking crawling
up a wall. Right. Actually, I think I think could be paced
better. Regardless of who the intended all this was, it was too long.
Yeah, that that whole thing, that whole you knowe was like oh
yeah, the whole show. I think it was a great to watch it
on a website. Yeah. Do you think Microsoft tries to answer in some
way? I don't know. I don't know if they can. We'll not
right the second line, no, no, no, no, like just
bring back. What I mean by it right now is like given the game
stock, given their backs boom, given their place in the market, I
mean like, is there enough enthusiasm around the Xbox brand at the moment to
like fill out a show like that. I think they could. I think
they can. Was that extra stuff was that public? No? No,
that was a press type thing. That that type of thing is absolutely dead
anything like with Halo five, Like yeah, like there's enough to get people
and they've and they've been going after Japanese stuff enough with like scale Bound and
what's your card game? Nonsense andom dust, Like there's probably enough stuff for
enough different people there that they could get some people out. You just wanted
like that would would a seem really reactionary? Yeah? Yeah, And they
don't have And where does it fit in the year right, like months start
getting I guess right, yeah, that's it starts getting kind of odd where
you place this stuff? Yeah, And also like they just don't I mean,
I don't know like it as much as like they have the ID Xbox
and they have their different things. Like it feels like the third party announcements
don't come the same way with Microsoft, you know what I mean, Like
it just doesn't feel like they're going after stuff the same way that's from the
same level, Like they'll they'll get their Call of Duty DLC and they'll they'll
do that deal. And I mean I feel like they had there's some of
arcade stuff back in the day, which it's pretty cool, right everybody used
to wait like what's coming to some arcade? But those days are gone.
Yeah, I feel I feel like the weird stuff about the Sony, like
all the third party stuff is like whenever they do these announcements, whether it's
you know, coming out of Europe or coming out of the three or now
this thing, like they deal in fucking bulk with these smaller games in a
way that like, yeah, no one individual announcement of those smaller games,
like it's gonna blow your fucking mind. But just the sheer number of games
that appeared on the PC that they are getting on their platforms, you know,
eventually it just starts to tip a scale at some point you're like,
fuck, what are you just doing? Like why stop? They're crazy.
They're almost the point where if you didn't have a PC of any kind,
you could just have like a PS four and a Vita and be a little
late. But yeah, yeah, it'd be late late, but you'd be
you're getting most of the best of speak Yeah. Yeah, yeah, you
know, you're not getting beyond Earth. Yeah, but you're getting the banner
saga, which is right, yeah, better kind of crazy. So yeah,
it is kind of weird. Al Right. Well that was the weekend's
events and the fucking avalanche of news that came out of them. You thought
the news was done? I did? You thought wrong? It's oh is
that okay? Is that the newsman talking news is over? Your professional opinion?
Sorry, but I've got news for you. There's more to talk about
here. Uh. Farewell to Ralph Baar, possibly the single most like seminal
figure in the history of video games, the reason we are all here kind
of yeahs why console video games exist. He passed away over the weekend at
the ripe old age of ninety two. Yeah. Well, with the disappearance
of arcades, it's likely he's the reason any video games exist set him up.
Yeah, so uh he The short version is he's the inventor of the
video game console. What does that mean? But you could go even further
back than that and kind of see him in the fifties and sixties sort of
thinking about, you know, conceiving the concept of video games even before they
were put into practice. And the Odyssey is you know what he is responsible?
Yeah, he ran Yeah, he ran the group that shipped the Magnavox
Odyssey, which was the actually like the literal first video game console. I
think its code name was the brown Box. Well, no, so that
he built that separate well kind of, yes, the brown Box exists,
which then became the interesting guy like born in the twenties and Germany like escape
Nazi Germany, like escaped the Holocaust and they went and fought in World War
Two? Did he Yeah? I think he was working. He was a
military intelligence okay, but just like classic tinkerer, like like my grandpa was
like this. I don't know if you know, he wasn't so much into
electronics, but I'm sure you know an old guy like this, it's got
like a work bench within the soul scope and a vaultmeter. I mean,
Vinnie, You're basically that's you in forty years right now, I hope.
So, like, you know, guy with a breadboard like building shit,
right, Yeah, taking apart toys seems yeah, like it seems like very
much more. See I can make this one curse. Yeah, apparent apparently
he was still like that. Yeah. Yeah, like you can read saw
some video interview maybe from Polygon or somethink it was him. I think PBS
did did it. I think the footage is from PBS. Okay, and
yeah, just still like why I wonder if we did this. Yeah,
it's like ninety two years old. Yeah, even in the last few years,
he was still tinkering with that stuff. Just like like huge amount of
respect for the people that are such accomplished engineers he made Simon, Yes,
yes, Simon he was. He got a bunch of awards. He was.
He got some sort of presidential honor back in two thousand and six.
And there's I got sort of you know, Achievement in Technology type award,
National Medal of Technology from Yeah, and then you know, you got the
GDC Lifetime Achievement Award. It was just a couple of years ago. I
think thank you right. The Washington Post ran a good story that had a
bunch of like factoids and stuff about him in there. It's kind of showing
how far back that's the stuff went with his ideas about games and stuff.
It was this really good quote from him, he says in nineteen sixty six,
thoughts about playing games using an ordinary TV set began to percolate in my
mind. When I designed and built a TV set at Laurel in nineteen fifty
five, I had proposed doing just that build in a game to differentiate our
TV set from the competition. Management said no, and that was that.
During a business trip in New York City on the last day of August in
nineteen sixty six, while waiting at a bus terminal for another Sanders engineer to
come into town for a meeting with client, I jotted down some notes on
the subject of using ordinary home TV sets to play games, and then they
say. Those notes eventually became a four page disclosure document now on file along
with the Brown Box, which was that prototype at the Smithsonian, but outlined
the idea of a game box that could play quote action games, board games,
sports games, chase games, and quote and other genres Chase Games.
Yeah about Chase Games. So yeah, he alka that says he bear allocated
a technician from his division at the defense company they worked for to develop the
idea. The project became official, then he supervised a couple of bunch of
other engineers and they basically worked on that stuff and made made the prototype.
You just look up that Washington the story. It's got a bunch of quotes
from him about just like life advice and how to like accomplish the things.
A documentary, like a short documentary about him very recently too. He searched
YouTube or something. It'll come up. But it was a really nice piece
that you know, he was even last year doing interviews and talking about his
accomplishments and he was still a really sharp guy, totally, yeah, up
until it lost him. One of one of his pieces of advice in this
in this those post story was to save everything because the notes his original notes
for the game, the tennis game that he made well in advance of Pong.
We're part of the discovery. In the case between them and Atari,
oh wow, like the like the copyright suit over Pong. The Atari ended
up settling out of court for and then having to pay Magnavox licensing for years
afterwards because Pong was basically a a carbon copier or whatever. Yeah, talk
about some foresight. Yeah yeah, Seriously, Like think to think he was
having these ideas back in the fifties is just crazy. He said, yeah,
I just built a TV, right right, It's just a casual piece
of conversation. I have no idea how well I mean you do this weekend?
I mean, I don't know. We're kind of like a it's a
it's crazy to think the video games are still so young that kind of like
the very first pioneers are kind of still with us and just now starting to
pass on. But like I feel like we're also losing the connection to like
that tangible era of engineering when you could like look at a machine and know
what every piece in it did. I think that's been gone for a while.
You're you're more or less right, I mean like it's kind of ever
since the integrated circuit came along, right, Yeah, or even just surface
amounted components. Stuff is so small, like now that you have like black
box chips that do all kinds of things inside them, and you can't like
look at them and see what they do. You can look at them well
what I mean, yeah, but discerning like what they're actually doing, the
whole thing, the whole my ear up to it. Hello. I do
feel like we're now finally starting to get into that range where some of those
people are starting to pass on. I feel like I actually wrote more obituaries
this year than I saw in the last like five or ten. I think
I think there's well, yeah, I think we're losing a lot of those
tinkers. But I think the tinkering has gone away too with the you know,
the deemifying of like reverse engineering and kind of like you know, we'll
go out, don't open three six, you don't modit, We're gonna take
you offline. We're gonna hunt you down. Where a lot of this stuff
wasn't come about by reverse engineering, right technology, because being able to understand
it, but you know, of course it's all brought about by reverse ensuring
the technology from the Roswell crash. Yeah, yeah, that'sn't have telecommunications and
we wouldn't have those microphones the Internet. It's like those cursed aliens. That's
a fair point. We should we should embrace that gift. Yeah, you
know, like a super super important figure in the you know, in this
field. But like the age of tinkering is up your iPhone and start tinkering.
You're right, But what I'm saying is like we're now we're starting to
lose the people who made things happen back in that era. You know,
like if there's kind of I don't know, there's always kind of a romantic
notion to me about like a single person who can build this amazing thing just
because they know how every piece of the chain works. But to me,
like the current day tinker are like Ian, like I start with software tinkers
absolutely like that. Dude'll break anything, yeah, but but make something amazing
read and then put something someday, put something better back together out of it.
Absolutely for sure. So yeah, adults is his family. It's an
interesting figure. Who's ready for more Assassin's Creed? Nope, no I am.
I am ready for more exciting let's go. Did you buy Unity?
No? I had to make my choice and I bought Dragon Eese. Okay,
all right, it probably made the wise choice and it was fairly informed.
Do you think do you think you're actually not gonna like the idea of
Anny not playing an Assassins Creed game is mind blowing to me. Play.
You can borrow a Rogue if you want. Okay, maybe I'll do.
I bet Rogue will come out on PC next year, so maybe, yeah,
I might. I might have already said that, which makes it seem
like there'll be a next gen version. Yeah, you might want to just
wait for Rogue HD. So that's no, that is not the news.
The news is that the nature of next year's Assassins Creed game. And I
can't believe I'm saying next year's Assassins Creed game, but I am is elite.
What is it? Oh, didn't see nothing, I'll dude, like
screenshots out there, nothing like a good probably would four to six months before
they would have announced it, probably, Yeah. Hill set in Victorian London,
Okay to hear about this stuff. All right, great, where we
talked about We've done a lot of talking this week, right, Yeah,
we did talk about this and then up over there, No, and then
I forgot the same reaction I had. Yeah. So yeah, So so
Kataku absorbed some massive leak pertaining to this game with a ton of inform.
In fact, they they say they so they watched a video like a target
render video of what this game is going to be. Uh set in in
uh set in London in the of course, in the nineteenth century. Jack
the Ripper, Yes, yes, Uh, it's either it's either going to
be our Jack the Ripper because you've been slicing everybody up. Yep. So
did you see they think they figured out the identity of Jack the Ripper?
Really didn't they get like this? Yeah? I don't know. Actually I
also saw the questions. Yeah, I'm not sure. There's some pretty advanced
DNA stuff I did not but continue on with anyway, So they're not sure
if it's if it's just codename or if it's the final title. But victory
is the unity of victory ass Creed victory, maybe Torrian era victory. Yes,
it also makes sense that they're going to Probably I would be surprised if
they do a numbered Assassin's Creed again. Wait, you'd be surprised if they
do that. Yeah, I think I think they're done with that. Think
I mean Black Flight did not need a four attached to it, Yeah,
like that was just unnecessary. But internally I think they thought like a sold
better because that had a number on it. So actually I would not be.
I took that largely as an attempt to distance distance it from three,
which was supportily received. Yes, that was part of it. Yeah,
definitely, to say, like, this is the next game. I think.
I think the game was in development without the number, and then they
hasn't that always indicated the different protagonists though there's no number Unity, Unity and
Road both have new protagonists and yeah, yeah so I think, but historically,
if that was the case, they have abandoned that. Since that,
I think the I think they're leaving that behind. Oh cool, I got
smart. Yeah, I guess. Like the biggest I'm trying to find Okay,
here we go. So the like, at least internally, are kind
of behind the scenes. The biggest deal with this thing is it's been being
made for the first time outside of Ubisoft Montreal, who's being Ubisoft Quebec,
who made Freedom Cry. Yeah, pretty was. Unfortunately it came out during
or right after our Game of the Year stuff last year, because otherwise I
would have talked it up. It was a pretty exceptional piece of DLC.
I mean, if the biggest criticism of the Assassin's Creed games is that they
don't really take enough risks, or at least the risks they take don't really
pan out. Freedom Cry did a lot of really interesting and smart things with
story and mechanics within the Assassin's Creed sort of structure, and the idea that
they would get a couple of years to build their own game. I was
so ready to just be done with this series, and then that kind of
at least makes me curious. M hmm, it's gotta grabbing huck heay grabbing
us. In addition to Freedom Cry, Quebec also made the Assassin's Pree three
DLC, The Tyranny of King Washington, which may be the best name for
a DLC ever in the history of video games. Was also really weird.
It was, wasn't It was like some weird old Yeah yeah, but you
know, just the idea of another studio taking a stab but yeah, yeah,
that kind of exciting that that that franchise apparently needs whatever. Yeah,
you can throw it and also you know, maybe a break but uh yeah,
but if another studio has been spearheading this one, plus they'll I've had
another year to work with this technology. We won't really know how that one's
gonna go, though, until we find out the nineteen other studios that are
also working on its true. Maybe it'll be. Did they say it's a
full on, uh like big release. Yeah, it is the next next
year's game. The word is they will not be putting out two games again
next year like they did this year. It's just going to be this one.
The screenshot's gorgeous. Yeah, the shots looking real nice. There's a
there's a real mood to that that is not present in Unity at all.
But none of this is official released assets. By so Later in the day
after this story was published you'd be so Oft sent a statement to several outlets,
not Kotaku. It'smost like they weren't very happy, but that had happened,
which Kotaku then repurposed, so I'll just read it here. The statement's
kind of crazy to me. It is always unfortunate when internal assets not intended
for public consumption are leaked, and while we certainly welcome anticipation for all of
our upcoming titles, we're disappointed for our fans and our development team that this
conceptual asset is now public. The team in Arquebec Studio has been hard at
work on the particular game in question for the past few years, and we're
excited to officially unveil what the studio has been working on at a later date.
In the meantime, our number one priority is enhancing the experience of Assassin's
Creed unity for players. You want to talk about assets that are unfortunate,
let's talk about the assets they are putting out for public consumption. Like.
The crazy thing about this to me, though, is that it in no
way like ignores or denies the existence of this game. It's basically just says
like, yep, we got us yeah, confirms it. Well, I
mean when you got screenshots, it becomes irrefutable in a way that isn't just
like sources have told us that they are putting out Assassin's Creed Victory next year.
You start to wonder like if if they had to weigh it out and
go like, well, you know, like let's give this a shot for
a change, instead of just saying nothing. And also, boy, we
sure could use like some singly keys over here people from what the fuck is
going on with current day Assassin's Creed. Sure, but they also say in
the in the end of the press release or the release that they're you know,
hey, we're also trying to fix Unity. You know, like,
don't be we have been working on this probably for years, but like don't
think that we abandoned Unity. We're still working at it. But yeah,
this is this is that their pr could use a positive goose and like this
is a distraction at least. Yeah, their games always get leaked to Assassin's
Creed specifically, the last couple have all probably it was like because somebody in
this room is working on Assassin Screened right right now. Well, Unity,
I'm working on a screen Coe Fronica. That's going okay. Leaks leaks just
like seemed like they're becoming just like a fact of life in modern media.
Though. Yeah, like as more and more people touched the production of not
just games where put Unity was leaked, like when a guy showed the trailer
to someone else on an airplane. Don't you remember that really? Yeah,
like there was like someone either worked at Ubisoft. It was like, yeah,
this is the game I'm working on and no, but like he he
was like a fan and then he ran I believe the neo gaff was like,
Yo, this guy showed me this ship on an airplane. That's just
dumb. Yeah, that's the thing you shouldn't do. Are you a fan
of the series? I love Assassin screen, but the definitely Yeah, I
don't know. I mean there's like there's been stuff leaking the left and right
out of the Star Wars production for instance, Like even look at Microsoft,
right, and he was a guy had at leaked a bunch of basically Microsoft
twenty fourteen slate like way earlier in the year. Yeah, there's like an
even even like Apple's the most secretive company on the planet, and like you
can't get to an iPhone reveal at this point without knowing exactly what it is.
So all your entertainment is made by robots. This will continue to happen.
There are no secrets. There are no secrets anymore then pure thing was
a hack, right, that was a whole other that was that was a
malicious activity for sure. That something. Yeah, man, that thing is
intense. Good God, all right, real quick, we'll pound through the
last few stories. Uh, Steam now lets you broadcast or stream stream video
games? Also anime also poorn to what to other viewers of Steam or other
Steam viewers. Yeah, it's like in client, So haves anybody tried this
yet? Yeah? I mean, well, tried. What tried broadcasting.
I've watched other I have watched other broadcasts because they publicly will show up.
You can you can set the privacy okay if you want it, so you
can. Can you just list your broadcast and anybody can stumble on it.
Okay, okay, they have a page they'll show that stuff, so you
can. You can come across stuff that way. So I watched someone streaming
out anime because they just added you know, like I think you can just
stream your desktop out or you know, it's you know, hey, add
the media player as a non Steam app and right from there. So I
watched a little bit of that. I logged into Friends for the first time
in a long time to right click on someone who was playing a game and
try to watch it. But it aired out, so it's it's still in
beta. They say that it's like, you know, if you have your
permission to set if it won't stream all the time, but if someone requests
to view it, it will start it up. Yeah, which I start
streaming, which is kind of cool. Prompt like will the prompt and say
like, hey, I would assume probably an end game elements like team pop
up that says so I thought I was reading on a messageboard somebody saying that
it was actually seamless, But I might be wrong. I don't know.
You have to enable it to extreme my desktop or something, right, I
can't just go log in, Yeah, yeah, I mean I would have
to have it set to like, you know, ship from there. So
yeah, like, I mean, you know, I saw some commentary about
this was sort of focused on like how this was lacking compared to Twitch.
I don't think they're trying to. I think the intent the intent here is
completely different. I feel like this is more like streaming as a purchasing aid.
You know. It's like I want to watch my friend playing a game
I'm interested in, and like five minutes later, I'll know if I want
to buy it. I'm not going to be surprised if at some point,
you know, especially with like the curator features that they have, that you
know, you could make a percentage of the sales off the ones that like
are bought directly through your broadcast. I think I think that's a pretty natural
extension of this stuff. At some point, is it is purely a purchasing
aid, you may you may have folks like you know, total Biscuit or
whoever that doing a channel. They do stuff through this, but I don't
think they're interested in competing with Twitch. They're just they're just augmenting what's unique
about that and the engagement you get from watching zone play and then keeping you
in client, which means then you can click a button to buy that game.
Though. The truly and the innovative thing about this is the the on
demand nature of this for the viewer, like the idea that the viewer can
initiate the stream. Yeah, you know, it'd be cool if Jeff was
playing that Call of Duty and I'm just I'm like just farting, drinking coffee,
like what's doing? Or just wonder what that game looks like this it
seems like a good time to check out five or ten minutes. I like
the idea of setting that like this also now requires me like do another flush
of like my friends list or something like that. Sure, but you know
it's being on the spiel to feel comfortable just setting that. It's like,
whenever I'm playing a game, if someone just wants to tune in and watch,
like, I think that's neat. Oh wonder who's paying the bandwidthout all
that seam is, but they're a score, you know, like that.
You know, they're probably looking at it as like hopefully they'll expose games to
people who then go buy the games, and they're going that way with it.
Yeah, it's not meant to compeat with Switch because which is a you
know, the the monetization and every step of the way Twitch is a is
a very different thing. Yeah. Vous making their money off selling games,
Yeah, and this is another way to do that. It's cool, like
they continue to I mean, it's it's basically it's like the incredible like data
spectator features writ large, right, Like sure, basically let's you be you
on the spectator end can decide to watch people without them okaying you into the
process or whatever. This is in beta now, yeah, open, but
yeah, any anyone, if you if you go into Steam, opt into
the Steam beta client, okay, which anyone can do, then then you
Yeah. I mean, like Valve is so fucking full of smart people,
Like they extend you to just have like the best ideas about everything. Yeah,
we'll see that's how it works out. You know. It's one of
those things where it's like they should probably surface popular streams on the store page
of themselves. So if you don't have friends playing it, and you're at
a store page and go, I want to see this, you can say
it's one of the thumbnails has become somebody playing that game right current. It
might. I mean you can imagine that. You know, you're on the
storefront, you click on a game page, and then it's like your streams
currently running, right, it's crazy sorted by popularity, it's it's probably again
linked to the curator stuff, and then right, yeah, shut it all
down. We were we even doing anymore, not working at Valve. We're
just like, you know, people, just what is quote unquote games journalism
at this point? If if you're just going to a place to buy a
game, watching one hundred people, just play it and be like, I'll
buy it, don't think about it too much if you'll go away. So
that's why we're getting into skateboard reviews. These trucks are bullshit. Oh no,
but only skateboards that you hold, never ones that you ride. Yeah,
okay, it's a good skateboard for holding you flip around your hand.
Yeah, how are the bearings? I don't know, but just the boards
is yeah, they're great. I don't know he's got a sick graphic on
it. Yeah, this one, it's like weirdly gripping on the top.
You can follow your nails down if you want it to. I don't know.
Five. Yeah, why we stopped doing video skateboard reviews just text?
Yeah, okay, last story, the footage. It took forever. The
match to what we were saying, let's get through this together, which The
Witcher three has been delayed until May from February. Yeah, I think I
was not not unhappy to see that. Yeah, I remember. I remember
I never played The Witcher too, but I remember what a damn mess that
was when it came out. Was it was it? Yeah, like there
was somebody there was and there was something like stuff with the tutorial stuff that.
Yeah. I remember they put out a massive update a few months later,
adding like that makes sense, didn't say mass math. I mean,
would you're like redoing the beginning of your game. That's a pretty big update
because nobody one and it was very different game it was. I think it
was more about introducing people to the mechanics. I remember, like, yeah,
I just remember everybody playing the Whitch or two when it first came out,
being like baffled at the way it played. That's how it was when
it came out on three sixty they had incorporated. Yeah, it was a
really good version it Also it also was like a huge resource hog on PC,
like it didn't run well for anybody, I believe, which is a
great time. Yeah, I don't know that game has looked great those times
we've we've ye closed out two e three's with very long which or three demos,
Absolutely, and it looked really good. So I'm not worried about it
or anything. But uh, Also, it's it's crazy to see a developer,
I guess because they're independent delay a game past March, you know,
yeah, right, like a past a quarter. Like if you're a publicly
owned company marches do or die for getting your game out. It's not hard
to imagine in the hands of someone else that game just comes out in March
twenty sixth or whatever whatever. But yeah, hopefully they take the time because
I'd rather have a good version of that. Then I rushed a buggy one.
Yeah, you know, they put out a statement basically saying, hey,
yeah, we want to make sure it's as good as it can be.
And also given you know, everything that happened. It's Fall. You
know, maybe the ripple effective at is publishers and developers at the language language
is actually pretty explicit. We owe you an apology. We set the release
day two hastily. It's a hard lesson one to take heart to heart for
the future. Well delayed twice, Yeah, it was spo come out.
It was Fall. It was supposed to be out now. Yeah, which
makes you me you know, it makes you raise your eyebrow a little bit,
like what was that game going to be if somehow that was coming out
in October. Yeah, it's also something there, like we don't believe in
putting out broken games. Yes, Like i CD Project is kind of an
amazing company. Sometimes I worry about them. Yeah, sure, like they
go they just like whatever their burn rate is, you know, like they
develop games for so long, like they put everything out DRM free, So
like a worry they get hired it a lot, Like it's just like,
how would you guys afford to keep making games like they're fascinating? Yeah,
totally, And well it seems like they're trying to counter that a little bit
by like what they're basically branding off which are in a bunch of different ways?
Is the Whitcher adventure game board games? Do you ever make their sci
fi thing? So they haven't talked about that in a while. Okay,
that's what I'm saying. They were super early in that when they announced it.
It doesn't even start full production until this game is out. It's still
a thing. Yeah, it's just like it exists in some form. Yeah,
at the end of news. That is the end of the record setting
news segments. Oh damn, yep, we did it. How do you
feel about one email? Or what do we haven't we at? Or what
are we at? Let's say what we got for this section? So we're
like twenty five minutes section. Yeah, it's take a couple of emails.
Okay, emails. I know you guys. Have you had another podcast to
you? Do we apologize for that? It's not your fault that we have
another podcast. Yeah, that's o'clock. Let's just true stay here all night.
Thomas from Virginia, it's upte Yeah. Uh. Subject line. You
would not believe how many subject lines are in my list of emails this week,
like almost all of them. Wow, it's amazing. Wow. So
when do we start talking class action lawsuit over PS four suspend mode. That
might be a little hasty, given that Sony just lost that class action lawsuit
for way over promising what PS three Vita remote play was going to be.
When do we start talking about the same thing over PS four to spend feature
that was promised almost two years ago and still hasn't materialized. I was really
really looking forward to that feature, since it's super great on Vita not having
to wait through load times if you just want to play the same game again,
But they haven't even mentioned it since I think it's super shitty to promise
features before you know whether or not you can deliver them, and yet another
modern trend we should try to discourage, Like I'm definitely definitely right about Like
it's shitty that I mean. That was one of the that was literally almost
the first feature in the presentation the day they announced the PS four that they
detailed. But Microsoft doesn't work that well. I had problems with Sunset overdrive
it because it would always make me log back in like my killing Yeah,
maybe maybe have multiple accounts on your machine? Do you have multiple? I've
just got one, so I have two and I almost never have to sit
through anything like it almost always remembers the game that I was playing. Now,
I think if you're switching accounts a fair amount, that will probably undo
that. I think as long as well it was just Sunset Overdrive. It
made me be like like which users this like okay, and then we'd have
to lead back in really like and you lose where you were. I know,
the checkpoint would come out, okay. I wasn't like to suspend,
like just booted back from out of the pauseman, you like I played through
that, and I played through that entire game, restarting the game like maybe
twice. Like I got like halfway through the game at home without ever having
like you know what I mean, never killed that session and started it over
like it just went and went. That was for me on Dead Rising.
Yeah, yeah, it's it's you know, that feature was a little spotty
at once. Yeah, I feel like it's occasionally clunky, but it's usually
Yeah, I used my TV through the Xbox and so I'm swapping between that
all the time. It's but I don't know what it worked once really.
Yeah. Well I have multiple accounts that my loves my wife, but it
always recognizes my girlfriend too. It never recognizes me. The hell yeah,
I turned off the facial recognition stuff. I had a case where my girlfriend
was playing Dragon Age and I walked in front of the TV and it like
went crazy. It's it's kind of creepy, right, yeah, weird,
Like we were having a conversation, like kicked her out of the game,
like, what's the shitty in our eating room? At the game Informer,
we have a stuffed giraffe in the background, and it would always think that
it was our editor, Kyle Hillier, and so like I would turn it
on to start playing a game and be like, hello, Kyle, that's
the drafting. That's pretty good. Are we sure that he didn't map the
giraffe's face as his own for the account? He's a draft that alright,
Yeah, I don't know what tell me it's a class action laws, but
yeah, I mean, like, however Microsoft implemented it has no bearing on
whether or not Sony should deliver it since they promised it two freaking years ago.
Wasn't that the same press conference when they said that they were the remote
Like if you're playing a game across the country and you need to help with
the take over, they talked about share play there, so that happened.
Well that happened. No, I don't care. There's nothing that same thing,
and that's the same thing a share play that launch right is what you're
describing. You you can do that now where like that I can take control
of Jason's game. That was the big thing. And for More two point
zero, that was Oh I didn't know that one live. Okay, I've
heard it doesn't work super great. I'm not surprised. Work that seemed like
an incredible thing, like something that just sound like it just sounded too good
to be true. And the way they were describing it, it was just
it's it's subject to you know, like modern latency restrictions and stuff, you
know, like even I don't know if lets you take over a game or
if it only lets you play as player too. Yeah, the local I
think, but I think it does. Actually I've tried it. Sorry,
I think the way they build it was like, oh, I'm having so
much you know what it does? It does. I read a story where
somebody had tried that stuff, and you can play somebody's game on their system,
but you're playing as them and you're getting them trophies, and yeah,
they're getting the trophies. The same game lives on their system. I can't
turn, in turn into more litigation until my vitality censor lawsuits. Okay,
that's a lot settles, uh, I mean it might be a little hasty
to be talking legal action just yet, but like it would be nice to
figut that in there. Yeah, well that is a nice feature to have.
Yeah to the I mean that was in a presentation, but it was
it. You know, part of the Vita stuff was that it was advertised
in a forward facing fashion that was very specifically about the Vitas coming out.
You should buy it because of this. I think this might be a slightly
different maybe. Yeah, I don't think. I don't know that somebody has
ever mentioned that again since that first reveal. Yeah, I just think press
conferences are held to be different. It wasn't something like, it wasn't something
they said, but it wouldn't come with the when you bought it. So
but when you kind of assume assume that at the announcement of you, I
mean, Mike Shoft annot a lot of things about the Xbox as they end
up walking back. So they've more or less come through on stuff over time,
Like you know, they've they've been way better about updating than Sony has.
Sure, I hope this eventually comes together. One more email. Wait,
that's it? Well, I don't know, he said a couple.
Okay, there's some good ones though, Uh save him. We're gonna need
to do an all email podcast here pretty soon. Nathan from Olympia, Washington
wants to know, Hey, bomb cast, do any of you have your
picture in a steakhouse or any awards in competitive eating? I went to eye
Hoop with my friend once and tried to set the record, probably a local
record of pancakes. I ate twenty five pancakes. Wait what size? Which
tied into? There's probably up? There has to be it. Well,
it is an eye hoop, so there must be an internationally recognized standard for
pancake size. They might have silver dollars. Maybe I ate twenty five pancakes,
tied the record and could not finish the twenty sixth one. Fuck you
no way, And I threw up in my seat and could not even take
into the bathroom. All right, well that's fair. I would love my
name. And you're gonna call bullshit on that one. Well, like you're
gonna give up on that. But if you're just literally vomiting at the table.
That's that's more of it. At the end of your challenge, I
would I would love my name and picture in the Midwestern steakhouse somewhere. Anybody.
He's gotta find the right steadhouse. Dan, you seem like the crazy
eating challenge guy. I'm not here. I am a really slow eater.
I don't know if I got a tiny stomach or something, but I'm not
sure. I'm not structurally built to take that much food in. I can
never competitive eaters. A lot of them are at finn Yeah, there's there's
that Asian woman you can like put it away. I don't know, she's
like five two or something. Well, what's the Japanese guy's name that does
they? Yeah, he's tiny. Yeah, yeah, I mean Joey Chestnut
is not a huge guy. You know. I don't do it for the
sport man, do it for love passion, and he could probably do pretty
well in speed speed eating. Yeah, but I think speed has to cut.
Yeah, if you give me a small portion at this point, Like
I said, I don't think I can pack it away, but I can
put it away. I don't think I pack it away. I don't know
my picture anywhere. But I used to frequently eat and tire cans of easy
cheese in one sitting, like snack time and like fifth grade, and we
could bring whatever, just the cheese. Yeah. So some people would bring
like a thing of fruit, snacks or whatever. I would bring either sharp
cheddar somewhere, no crackers. I mean it was best with crackers. But
sometimes we didn't have any rits or cheese that I would just bring the can.
Sometime there's just no time, Just like a month ago, I got
just a can. I just ate it. Yeah, that guy packs gave
me a can of easy cheese. I just ate the damn time flavor directly
into your mouth. Yeah, like a bunch of gas coming out of that
thing. Fine cheese. Okay, so the cheese so much. I just
yeah, think gas is the problem part of that for sure. Definitely at
some point the chain the gas is. I just bought it can of alcohol
infused whipped cream. It's vanilla flavored, any good? No? No,
well, so I barely got any out of it that before it used all
the propellant and then it was just this mostly full can of oh yeah,
because I was helping the propellant uh, and and I it was like fourteen
dollars or something. I felt like I got grossly ripped off. So do
you guys have nutlicker around here? It's a peanut butter vodka. It's it's
a peanut butter something else. Yeah, it's actually really good. Great,
actually sounds I concur it. It's actually really a trust. I might have
a picture up somewhere I have done, like when I was younger, that
eating stuff, but I can't remember because you probably pass out after that.
There was an arcade bar down in Atlanta battling brew and they had something called
the Final Level Challenge, which is like, you know, the the buns
are like actually grilled cheese is like four patties and fucking beef, and like
once a year we'd like line up twelve people along the bar and we would
time everybody, uh to see how you know, fast they could eat this,
And there were a number of people that threw up. That's the only
thing that I've like competed in. I guess I think I've got my my
picture up on like a few bar walls maybe, but like do not serve
possibly we're just playing Edward forty hands on the competitive, like consuming of food
and beverage products rate, Like how does how does that quality? To write
a passage? That's something you do when you go to college. I wasn't
in college, and I wasn't in college. Okay, I don't think they
give you a college degree unless you think it was art. When we did
it was it was it was an art projects I had. That's not malt
liquor. That doesn't count. It is. But I don't know. I
feel like Mickey's is like classy malt liquor. Like, yes, if you're
if you're doing there is a definition I have never heard associated with if you're
doing this, you're doing cold for all these great I think cold forty five
is just a beer. I don't know if that's the word great should not
under the equation with any of these is definitely. I think you're softest forty
yet. Yep. Yeah, Why is it less like Saint IDEs? Is?
It tastes the taste of it is a little more palatable. It is
easier to get down head. Yeah, yeah, occasions fans. I think
when we did it, I had one Mickey's one oe I think I did
too. Yeah, I think that's fucked up. That's part of where we
fucked us, where you fuck up? I was fine. Ye. Standard
Mickey's has been involved in the three worst drinking experiences I've ever had, so
I have sort of a negative association with whether that's fair or not. I
don't know. I might have just had those anyway. But still of King
Cobra, Oh yeah, yeah, I like, yeah, I remember you
pouring most of a King Cobra out into a bathtub in like a Mercaid hotel
bathroom. Yeah, that sounds like something I will do. Like, drank
about a third of it and they were like nope, and then just poured
the rest of it out and people were yelling at you not to do that.
I could drink King Cobra. Yeah. Now, I don't know.
Maybe I've just earned a taste for it. Yeah maybe, but yeah,
it's I don't I won't drink a Camo forty. I got standards, oh
camera Camos Camo. I've never had. The country club is. It doesn't
have a strong taste to it. I don't like it. I find it
to be kind of like the bud Light. Yeah exactly, It's kind of
lame. But yeah, old English the most forty No No, I usually
don't get Mickey's at this point. Yep. I think that was just the
first forty I ever had, So that's when I think forty, I just
see a Mickey's bottle. I absolutely Mickey's was very popular. All the crust
punks I hung out with as a kid all drank Mickey's. Yeah, that's
a phrase I never heard until I moved out here. Crust crust punks or
crusty kids. I didn't what does that mean? Yeah, like basically just
sort of the gutterpunk, like the people who wore a ship ton of patches
on their denovest that was all the fuck up and you know, listen to
nothing but like D Side and just talked about how everything fucking sucked. Okay,
I don't think we have those in the Midwest. You do? You
do? You just don't know about him. They don't don't leave the house.
Yeah. I would say there is maybe a higher concentration of them on
the West Coast, but I feel like they are a nationwide phenomenon that's sweeping
the nation. Yeah, all right. In nineteen ninety six, two more
real Fast Alpha. North Carolina needs Jeff's help. Okay, please give me
your expert opinion. I received two super rare Fandangos from winning a King of
the Ring. Should I level them up and make a pro providing a much
needed boost for my deck or not? Because fuck Fandango. Fuck Fandango's sorry,
fuck Fandango. But if you need, if you needed to level up
your deck, you need to level up your deck. Yeah, I mean
that's I mean I rolled a super rare Darren Young for a very long time,
and it's not that I hate Darren Young, but I have no opinion
really of Darren Young for the most part. But it just take what you
can get. When he was good, he did, but I needed to
take what you can get and you feed one to the other. Yeah,
that's how you make them into a pro card. Is that cannibalism when you
eat yourself. Yeah, long pig. I spent more time thinking about this
than I would care to admit, but yes, I believe it is.
You need to level up both those cards to the max, then combine them,
then level up that combined card. Feed all the cards that combined card.
That sounds like an expert piece of advice. Dan Martin has a short
question for you. Okay, in an episode of Mettled Your Scandal and Dan
use the phrase already paying dividends? Dan, what are dividends? They are
certain stocks will give you a dividend payoffs on a certain schedule. Uh.
And sometimes you know, I don't know how to explain it that well,
I know I have stocks and every once in a while it'll be like dividend
pay like I just got like fourteen free bucks that I think that counts.
That was accepted. That was quite as a fairly articulate explanation. Actually benefit,
that's supposed to an incentive for you to get a company stocks like,
oh, they've got dividends. You know. You know what, Dan,
you just knew something I didn't. So you win this round. There you
go, always surprising us, all right, last one, even though they
were actually a lot of good emails this week. Everybody loves these dj from
Meldon Australia. What that okay? Yeah? Hey, Bombar Darrow's. I
asked my girlfriend what she thought you all looked like After eight plus years of
listening to your voices since the game spot days, the results were illuminating.
Drew Pale, where's a tight shirt? Messy pants? Maybe ripped? Pulled
up, socks skinny and a little short. War's dated, old glasses graying
but in a salt and pepper ways, like have like things attached to the
likes. I'm thinking like pants that aren't quite long enough so you can see
the socks pulled up. Okay, okay, I'm sorry, what else that's
my guess? Okay, pants are immaculated. I'm know what MESSI pants even
mean? Dan red hair, average stature, slightly slashy, where's black?
Peculiar nose? Doesn't sound annoying, but probably looks annoying. Looks looks annoying.
Nice laugh, These are very like detailed. Yeah, I wish you
could just sort of like chow us what she drew or whatever? You think
that I think these are. These are just herbal descriptions. Okay you think
that Brad Seth Rogan, Okay, all right, yeah, I'm fair.
Not the first time I've gotten that. Jeff Hello tall, where's a cap
with flicky dark hair? Darting eyes, doesn't sleep, loves coffee, Actually
he loves caffeine, not coffee, gentle giant, A half of that is
true? Then, then she heard the segment where you discussed Wendy is in
and out for fifteen minutes and said, actually they're all fat, not all.
I'm more like a skinny fat. So keep the coming, get you
get your loved ones in on the action. These are always amusing. BombCast
at giant bomb dot com is where you should send your emails if you want
them red on the air. Hopefully we'll do more next week. Uh,
there's a weird podcast. There was a lot of stuff to talk about.
Yeah, and it's gotten us to this point and we are also you know,
thinking it. We are Oh my god, this is like our six
or seven of podcasting today and you guys still have a power podcast to do
ye and a Sphere podcast tomorrow. But yes, we we have completed all
of our Game of the Year deliberations at this point yep, and have a
lot of video stuff to produce in the coming hours. Yeah. Before the
you these people that are not from this office. Yeah, see, everybody
really bummed when you guys leave. It's been really cool having guys. Someone
has ever said that about me nice having a full office? Yeah, I
said, a bunch of people around you, like a full office with a
lot of people. Ane comes in New York because that office is nothing but
folk. Oh I heard there was quite quite a few people. There are
many frammed into that office. All the lights are on. Yeah, if
you guys noticed that for the past few days that we've been doing podcasts in
this room, the ones that do podcasts every week have separated each other by
one person that we're not sitting next to our normal aggressive or or maybe the
ones that don't do it decided to sit next to somebody that they love or
yeah, yeah, all right, yeah, sure, yes, but yeah,
that's gonna do it for this week. I guess content is still probably
