<v Speaker 3>They got one point five million dollars for a ninety
<v Speaker 3>minute set.
<v Speaker 2>They make more money than anybody has for that, but
<v Speaker 2>tensions are still high.
<v Speaker 3>The tensions are high. Even a million dollars an hour
<v Speaker 3>can't cure some of the tensions that are going on. No,
<v Speaker 3>So during nineteen eighty three, they begin working on a
<v Speaker 3>new album YEP, to come out at the very end
<v Speaker 3>of nineteen eighty three YEP, and that album is called
<v Speaker 3>nineteen eighty four.
<v Speaker 4>This is a new van Halen.
<v Speaker 2>The diehard Van Halen fans are getting mixed reviews. Some
<v Speaker 2>of them are sticking with them, some of them are like,
<v Speaker 2>I don't know what's going on with these guys. You
<v Speaker 2>get those guys who think they sold out, and so
<v Speaker 2>then all of a sudden, if it's popular, they're not
<v Speaker 2>interested anymore. Yeah, I don't care about you guys.
<v Speaker 3>How teacher comes out with the young Van Halen boys
<v Speaker 3>running around the school terrorizing, right, you've got missped his
<v Speaker 3>head and misspelled and miss science or whatever, and those
<v Speaker 3>spelled teachers running around.
<v Speaker 2>You've got his kind of awkwardly sighing mother. And then
<v Speaker 2>when Waldo speaks, he's got this unusually deep voice.
<v Speaker 4>Oh mom, Yeah, no, are not like other guys.
<v Speaker 1>I'm nervous than my socks are too.
<v Speaker 3>You know who that voice is right now? That voice
<v Speaker 3>is Phil Hartman of saturn Aline.
<v Speaker 2>Oh Phil Hartman, God rest his soul. Their success is
<v Speaker 2>beyond what has it has ever been in history. They
<v Speaker 2>are literally at the top of their game.
<v Speaker 3>And this is where it falls apart. So eight o'clock
<v Speaker 3>in the morning, they're supposed to be there to write
<v Speaker 3>and play music. Dave would show about eleven, start a fight,
<v Speaker 3>and then leave.
<v Speaker 2>He, unbeknownst to them, goes and finds another group of
<v Speaker 2>guys to play with, produces an album, a four song album,
<v Speaker 2>which he says, hey, you know, any album's only got
<v Speaker 2>four good songs on it. Anyway, I'm just cutting off
<v Speaker 2>the fat. As it turned out, there were only really
<v Speaker 2>two good songs on the album. This is the ego
<v Speaker 2>speaking right here. He does an interview with David Letterman
<v Speaker 2>in early eighty five talking about that album, and Dave
<v Speaker 2>is trying to find out what's going to happen with
<v Speaker 2>the rest of the band.
<v Speaker 6>I think now's a good time on New Year's to
<v Speaker 6>decide whether you're going to be a hot dog or
<v Speaker 6>a little weenie.
<v Speaker 1>When you're doing solo work.
<v Speaker 2>Is the Does this mean that the band will soon
<v Speaker 2>be breaking up?
<v Speaker 1>No, No, that happens.
<v Speaker 6>You know, I still have very I still have very
<v Speaker 6>strong tribal instincts, and we'll be going into the studio
<v Speaker 6>like the middle of this month and start arguing again,
<v Speaker 6>and we'll come back out with an album sometime this year.
<v Speaker 3>Hopefully.
<v Speaker 2>He has this full expectation that the band's going to
<v Speaker 2>stay together. But you can't be the guy who goes
<v Speaker 2>and trashes the meetings, the guy who rates somebody for
<v Speaker 2>going and doing work with other people, and then pull
<v Speaker 2>off this stunt and expect to remain in the band.
<v Speaker 6>Boom Budda, boom Badida, Boom Badida, boom Budy.
<v Speaker 2>Dave is out.
<v Speaker 3>Dave's out in nineteen eighty five, right at the pinnacle
<v Speaker 3>of their professional career.

<v Speaker 2>The first time I heard it was on the movie
<v Speaker 2>Joe Dirt.
<v Speaker 6>No, sir man, I don't like that crap.
<v Speaker 3>I'm a rocker dude through and through.
<v Speaker 7>Here's my favorite bands, AC DC, Van Halen, not Van Hagar.
<v Speaker 3>Sammy officially joins the band in nineteen eighty.
<v Speaker 2>Five, and he's the perfect perfect guy to come on.
<v Speaker 8>Toody and go.
<v Speaker 1>To heaven, hang around to report again.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, so you've got a good hearted guy, successful in
<v Speaker 2>his field, better voice, great stage presidents. It seems like
<v Speaker 2>the perfect replacement for a day.
<v Speaker 3>So they get together and because Sammy is a better musician,
<v Speaker 3>better writer, they start working and they come up with
<v Speaker 3>a song called why Can't This Be Love?
<v Speaker 6>Time tell me.
<v Speaker 8>I never have al it's got what it tastes.
<v Speaker 2>And of course why can't This Be Love has a
<v Speaker 2>song lyric in it which has been made fun of
<v Speaker 2>a little bit, the Only Time will tell if we
<v Speaker 2>stand the test of time. In two thousand and eight,
<v Speaker 2>the Telegraph named this the eighth worst lyric of all time.
<v Speaker 3>Only time will tell we stand the test of time. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>that's simple wisdom right there.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, why can't This Be Love? Is what Sammy Hagar is.
<v Speaker 2>And you look at how many times love shows up
<v Speaker 2>in the title of his songs, And where did love
<v Speaker 2>appear for David Lee Roth? And you talk about that

<v Speaker 3>a good song you may recognize from the movie Spaceballs.

<v Speaker 3>can still split the atom with his acts.
<v Speaker 4>I love that quote.
<v Speaker 2>He doesn't quit playing the guitar.
<v Speaker 3>Here's what I can't understand, even the hardest davidly Roth fan,
<v Speaker 3>I don't understand how you can listen to the song
<v Speaker 3>Dreams or Love Walks In or why can't this be
<v Speaker 3>love and say I love David.
<v Speaker 4>Those are great songs, and they are great songs.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, they are great songs. Love walks In reach number
<v Speaker 2>twenty two, Dreams reached number twenty two Best of both Worlds.
<v Speaker 3>That's solid too, That's a great song.
<v Speaker 2>It is a great great song. And then, as you said,
<v Speaker 2>why can't this be love? All of those songs are
<v Speaker 2>great songs that are just different.
<v Speaker 3>They're different so at this time, and I'm the first
<v Speaker 3>to admit that I'm a very nostalgic person, and so
<v Speaker 3>nostalgia makes it difficult for me to discern whether it's
<v Speaker 3>really great or I'm just nostalgic about it. This song
<v Speaker 3>came out nineteen eighty six.
<v Speaker 4>I'm thirteen years old.
<v Speaker 3>That's when my musical tastes are forged, you know, And
<v Speaker 3>most people would agree with that, right, So love walks
<v Speaker 3>in when I hear that song. That song reminds me
<v Speaker 3>of the mysteries of the broad class. And who am
<v Speaker 3>I going to ask to the dance? And this girl
<v Speaker 3>does she like.
<v Speaker 1>Me or not?
<v Speaker 3>Sends us.

<v Speaker 2>Hagar versus van Halen, there's just no denying that anything

<v Speaker 3>Do you know that the fifty one fifty has no

<v Speaker 3>Zero music videos. Now you can say, well, Dreams had one,

<v Speaker 3>which is cool, right, but there's none other the band
<v Speaker 3>right now. They did pluck a best of both worlds
<v Speaker 3>that got some rotations out of their live show, but
<v Speaker 3>there were no produced, no paid for, no music videos
<v Speaker 3>for MTV. Right, and for it to do that well
<v Speaker 3>without music video during this time, it's seems crazy. Fifty
<v Speaker 3>one to fifty is my personal favorite van Halen out right.
<v Speaker 2>It is one of three great.
<v Speaker 4>Ones, all right.
<v Speaker 3>So that came out in eighty six, they tour in
<v Speaker 3>eighty seven, They go back to the studio in eighty
<v Speaker 3>eight and they come up with OU eight one two.
<v Speaker 3>Before it was named OU eight one two, the working
<v Speaker 3>title was called Bone. Not really sure why they did that,
<v Speaker 3>but Alex van Halen is one like no, that's that title.
<v Speaker 4>Sucks rightly, and I agree with him.
<v Speaker 3>So o ya one two. Sammy actually the one who
<v Speaker 3>came up with this album. Now, there's a lot of
<v Speaker 3>sort of urban legends about how they came up with
<v Speaker 3>this name. He says that he picked O eight one
<v Speaker 3>two after seeing it on a delivery truck, but rumors
<v Speaker 3>persist to this day that it is a direct reference
<v Speaker 3>to David Lee Roth's album.
<v Speaker 2>Idiot Final Right. Dave has a rather famous interview where
<v Speaker 2>he's ranting against them and says that as the threat,
<v Speaker 2>I stay quiet.
<v Speaker 9>For six months, seven months, and I'm just reading diatribe
<v Speaker 9>after Harang, after this, after that, you know again and
<v Speaker 9>again and again, and I still believe there's no one.
<v Speaker 9>It's not necessary to make a comparison. I don't think
<v Speaker 9>you have to make a choice. But being Henglin demands it.
<v Speaker 9>You have to either love us and hate him or
<v Speaker 9>vice versa.
<v Speaker 8>They demand it.

<v Speaker 3>the guitars kind of slink in and it's got that.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, So I'm gonna put you on the spot here
<v Speaker 2>and we can keep going on black and Blue. But
<v Speaker 2>you said my favorite Sammy song. So is your favorite
<v Speaker 2>van Halen song from the Wroth years and from the
<v Speaker 2>Hagar years? A Hagar song or a Roth song?
<v Speaker 3>Why don't I'll tell you what at the end, I'll
<v Speaker 3>tell you. Okay, I'll give you a list of my

<v Speaker 3>When I was fifteen, I thought this was the greatest
<v Speaker 3>thing ever. Just the way the guitar comes in, and
<v Speaker 3>it's clearly this song is about I know we're trying
<v Speaker 3>to keep this family friendly, but this song is about.
<v Speaker 2>Sex absolutely so as many of their songs are.
<v Speaker 3>I mean, it's very subtle when they say let's do
<v Speaker 3>it till we're black and Blue, right. This is a
<v Speaker 3>top down, turn it up, cruise in the streets type
<v Speaker 3>of song. But the song that comes out after Black
<v Speaker 3>and Blue, they haven't video with it, and it's called
<v Speaker 3>When It's Left. When It's Love is the first video
<v Speaker 3>that actually comes out where you see the SAMI version
<v Speaker 3>of the band together and in a produced video, and
<v Speaker 3>it blasted its way to the top of the charts.
<v Speaker 3>And this is one of those songs like Black and Blue,
<v Speaker 3>like Love Walks In, like Jump for that matter, I
<v Speaker 3>don't need to listen to the song the first three
<v Speaker 3>seconds that it plays, I know I like it already.
<v Speaker 3>I mean it just it's easy on the ears. It's
<v Speaker 3>a very very radio friendly song.
<v Speaker 2>That song is obviously what we I mean, what we
<v Speaker 2>would call a power ballad. Yeah, in the vein of
<v Speaker 2>Free Bird by Leonard Skinnyard Steroid of Heaven, where you've
<v Speaker 2>got this, you know, we got rock. But it's that slow,
<v Speaker 2>smooth introduction and it picks up. They all pick up
<v Speaker 2>dream on, it picks up. I think for our age,
<v Speaker 2>probably the epitome of the rock ballad is when every
<v Speaker 2>Rose has its thorn.
<v Speaker 3>We haught to argue this because I'd say Home, Sweet
<v Speaker 3>Home by Motley Crue.
<v Speaker 2>But also is this Love by White Snake, which is
<v Speaker 2>every time I hear the title list, I'm like, oh, yeah,
<v Speaker 2>is this love Love? Wait a minute, which song is this?
<v Speaker 2>I can't remember what something this is? Okay, both came
<v Speaker 2>up at the same time.
<v Speaker 4>Actually, yeah, what.
<v Speaker 3>Then you end up with finished which you started, which
<v Speaker 3>is kind of a fun, little acoustic type of thing
<v Speaker 3>and just kind of twangy kind of.
<v Speaker 2>And so the story on this one is that Eddie
<v Speaker 2>was up late, had this song that he was playing.
<v Speaker 2>Do you know this? Okay? And so he you know,
<v Speaker 2>he and Sammy your neighbors at this point, so he
<v Speaker 2>just goes and wakes him up, knocks on the door.
<v Speaker 3>He goes, bangs on the door.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, He's like, okay, I got this and I just
<v Speaker 2>need you to help me, and they sit out on
<v Speaker 2>the porch. I just how awesome would that be for
<v Speaker 2>Eddie devant Halen to show up and knock on your
<v Speaker 2>door and you guys just go out and two o'clock
<v Speaker 2>in the morning and play until you figured this song out.
<v Speaker 3>I think that's great.
<v Speaker 2>And did you hear the yeah? So he leaves. Eddie leaves,
<v Speaker 2>and his version.
<v Speaker 3>Of the story is he and his wife were in bed,
<v Speaker 3>it's late, He's.
<v Speaker 2>Trying to put the moves on her.
<v Speaker 3>They're getting busy and Eddie van Halen banging on his door.
<v Speaker 3>So so he's, you know, throw on a roadbro quick,
<v Speaker 3>and dude, what do you watch? I got an idea
<v Speaker 3>for a song. We got to finish it, you know,
<v Speaker 3>So come out here with me. So he reluctantly goes outside,
<v Speaker 3>but the song then becomes name Finish what you started?
<v Speaker 2>Right's not.

<v Speaker 3>don't know this, you know, Samy's kind of trashed and
<v Speaker 3>kind of the uncool option of van Halen or whatever.
<v Speaker 3>But fifty one fifty OU eight one two four on lawful,
<v Speaker 3>cardinal knowledge and balance all four Number one.
<v Speaker 2>Palm absolutely can't argue against that.
<v Speaker 3>I don't know what you're judging. That's a pretty good
<v Speaker 3>way of telling what's popular.
<v Speaker 2>Well maybe, I mean no, yeah, you're right, it's it's
<v Speaker 2>a good way of telling what's popular. But what's popular
<v Speaker 2>doesn't necessarily mean what's better.
<v Speaker 3>That's true because Bad is better than Thriller. We saw
<v Speaker 3>that last week.
<v Speaker 2>Well, I mean that kind of goes against your argument
<v Speaker 2>because Bad had more number one hits, and I still think,
<v Speaker 2>I still think that Thriller is better. But the idea
<v Speaker 2>of bad and good is subjective.

<v Speaker 3>So after finish what you started, you have Kabba Wabbo,
<v Speaker 3>which is a great song which pops up again later
<v Speaker 3>on when Sammy opens a club down in Cova Saint.
<v Speaker 4>Lucas and he calls it Cabo Wobbo love. That song.
<v Speaker 2>Becomes a tequila.
<v Speaker 4>It does come to tequila.
<v Speaker 2>Actually, when we did this, I looked at that tequila.
<v Speaker 2>It is a high priced tequila comparatively speaking. It's it's
<v Speaker 2>really so it must be pretty good. I don't know
<v Speaker 2>that I've ever had it. Okay, I know that you
<v Speaker 2>have it.

<v Speaker 3>not going for that. But they won't let me because

<v Speaker 2>They had proposed naming it that, but then like putting
<v Speaker 2>it in a round bat and that's right.
<v Speaker 3>They talked about that, and so Ray says, oh, for
<v Speaker 3>unlawful carnal knowledge. And he says, what are you talking about?
<v Speaker 3>And he's like, well, that's what it. Back in the
<v Speaker 3>old days, if a guy was caught with your wife
<v Speaker 3>and they wanted to make an example of him, they'd

<v Speaker 2>That one is like old school fan Halen. Pound Cake
<v Speaker 2>is the hard rock that that I wanted them to
<v Speaker 2>be all along. It is strong that first that Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>he's playing. He's playing the guitar with a.
<v Speaker 3>Drill, with a power drill, and it's killer again Eddie
<v Speaker 3>making up sounds for us, uh and so yeah, yeah.

<v Speaker 2>In that particular song, Sammy is really using his hard
<v Speaker 2>rock voice. He's not using his love song voice. He
<v Speaker 2>is using that wretchy, rocky gravelly.
<v Speaker 4>No doubt love it.
<v Speaker 3>When they recorded that song at the very end, he's
<v Speaker 3>really bringing it, he says. And he said the producer
<v Speaker 3>showed his arm and it had his the hair was
<v Speaker 3>standing up on his arm.
<v Speaker 4>Oh nice, And they were like, that's it. That's our take. Yep,

<v Speaker 2>And so what ultimately they did when they would perform
<v Speaker 2>it in concert, Eddie took a cordless drill and then
<v Speaker 2>painted it like the Frankenstrat guitar and had the red
<v Speaker 2>with the white and black stripes on it.
<v Speaker 3>And then the next song comes out is Top of
<v Speaker 3>the World. Okay, Top of the World did very well,
<v Speaker 3>more definitely more pop. This is a tidbit on Top
<v Speaker 3>of the World that I thought was interesting. When they
<v Speaker 3>play their live shows, the beginning guitar of Top of
<v Speaker 3>the World is actually the outro of Jump, So when
<v Speaker 3>they play it live, they usually roll Jump right into Top.
<v Speaker 8>Of the World.
<v Speaker 3>And when they play it live on this tour, on
<v Speaker 3>this particular tour, they would play Jump and it would
<v Speaker 3>go right into.
<v Speaker 2>Top of the World right well. That you know, so
<v Speaker 2>many of the songs throughout the time with both David
<v Speaker 2>and with Sammy would be songs that they had been
<v Speaker 2>working on for years and just hadn't found the right
<v Speaker 2>mix for. So I can totally see how there was
<v Speaker 2>an intention with a song that came out seven years
<v Speaker 2>earlier and probably was developed a decade before that. Finally
<v Speaker 2>they found the right spot, the right sound, the right music,
<v Speaker 2>which also is true for Right Now. The story is
<v Speaker 2>that Eddie had been playing it for a while and Sammy.
<v Speaker 2>I think they're not even in the same room, like
<v Speaker 2>there were different rooms, but Sammy's working on one song,
<v Speaker 2>working on the lyrics and working on the tune, and
<v Speaker 2>Eddie's playing in another room and he overhears Eddie and
<v Speaker 2>he comes in He's like, play that again. And he's like,
<v Speaker 2>I think we're working on the same song. Like the
<v Speaker 2>chord progression that he had done was so similar and
<v Speaker 2>the melody that he had come up with, and this
<v Speaker 2>is you know right now is one that Sammy holds
<v Speaker 2>in the highest regard as far as lyrics are concerned.
<v Speaker 2>He had been taking a break and was on the
<v Speaker 2>beach and was kind of obsessing about various things and
<v Speaker 2>then just kind of realized, hey, you know why I'm
<v Speaker 2>obsessing about all these things when here on the beach,
<v Speaker 2>I should be right here, right now. And that was
<v Speaker 2>his inspiration for all of the lyrics to the song.
<v Speaker 2>And so, you know, the video for this song was
<v Speaker 2>it may have been their biggest hit as far as
<v Speaker 2>video awards go. They won Video of the Year for it.
<v Speaker 2>And if you don't remember the video, it's one where
<v Speaker 2>the song is playing, but as you as a song playing,
<v Speaker 2>there's occasional images of the band intermixed with other kind
<v Speaker 2>of intense scenes and there's texts that appears and says,
<v Speaker 2>right now this is happening, or right now, this is happening.
<v Speaker 2>Right now, Eddie's hands are really busy, and you know,
<v Speaker 2>and Sammy was adamantly opposed to this idea. He was like, this,
<v Speaker 2>people are gonna be reading and this honestly, this occurred
<v Speaker 2>with me, like I was frustrated because I'm like, I'm
<v Speaker 2>trying to read the words and I'm alost trying to
<v Speaker 2>listen to the music, and I feel like I'm missing
<v Speaker 2>out on both things. But it was it was a
<v Speaker 2>huge success for them, and Sammy's adamantly opposed against, against, against,
<v Speaker 2>and they're basically forcing him into it. He goes and
<v Speaker 2>disappears for like a week, you know, just in frustration,
<v Speaker 2>a little bit of a tantrum there, and then comes back.
<v Speaker 2>And when he comes back they're shooting the video. He's
<v Speaker 2>actually sick. He's like running a fever and got pneumonia.
<v Speaker 2>Is still angry about it, and so there's a scene
<v Speaker 2>towards the end where like you see him stop singing,
<v Speaker 2>even though the you know, obviously the song continues, but
<v Speaker 2>he just like crosses his arms and quits. He said
<v Speaker 2>that was really like he was angry and just like,
<v Speaker 2>screw it, I'm not singing anymore. I don't like this
<v Speaker 2>the way that's going. I'm just gonna quit singing. And
<v Speaker 2>it ended up in the video and it's kind of
<v Speaker 2>actually cool.

<v Speaker 3>I haven't seen it well, one of them that stands
<v Speaker 3>out of my I mean, this is one of my
<v Speaker 3>favorite videos too, but I think there's one line and

<v Speaker 4>Thinking that's pretty pointant, you know.

<v Speaker 3>January of ninety five, the album Balance comes out, right,
<v Speaker 3>it reaches number one. People are excited to have it,
<v Speaker 3>but this was released. I mean, they're starting to.
<v Speaker 2>Fight well, and you know, it's kind of funny. I
<v Speaker 2>think in both scenarios, just before the end, Dave doesn't
<v Speaker 2>appreciate that the end is about to come, and Sammy
<v Speaker 2>had I think he was literally caught off guard. You
<v Speaker 2>can expect some troubles. It's sad to listen to some
<v Speaker 2>of the interviews. He goes where he's like, I mean,
<v Speaker 2>I don't foresee us ever breaking up. We just get
<v Speaker 2>along so well, it's just not even. And then you know,
<v Speaker 2>of course things fall apart. Everybody's going to pick sides
<v Speaker 2>on the steal. But I don't think there's any question
<v Speaker 2>that Eddie was going through some serious issues at this point,
<v Speaker 2>in and out of rehab, lost a ton of weight,
<v Speaker 2>you know, And what are you going to do if
<v Speaker 2>you're Alex. You can't do something. You can't abandon your brother.
<v Speaker 2>So he's going to stand by him at this point
<v Speaker 2>and back his play. But I think it was very
<v Speaker 2>obvious that it was not the same Eddie as when
<v Speaker 2>they had gotten together.

<v Speaker 3>But still that's that's a fight, that's an everyday struggle.
<v Speaker 2>So on balance, the only song worth mentioning to me

<v Speaker 3>radio friendly hit. And then in nineteen ninety seven, they

<v Speaker 2>wife are expecting a child. He's they've got a natural
<v Speaker 2>delivery set Eddie calls him and says, you need to
<v Speaker 2>come back here and do some recording. He's like, hey,

<v Speaker 2>me just take care of this and then I'll be back.

<v Speaker 2>a solo artist. Maybe you should just be a solo artist.

<v Speaker 3>van Halen with Dave. Okay, I'm a fan, but once again,
<v Speaker 3>I jumped in nineteen eighty four, so I wasn't married
<v Speaker 3>to Dave, right, so I jumped in at the new
<v Speaker 3>sound of Van Halen. Okay, so I wasn't you know,
<v Speaker 3>I wasn't blown away by the guitars and stuff that
<v Speaker 3>people when they jumped in earlier were, And so it
<v Speaker 3>just has to do with my age. But nineteen eighty
<v Speaker 3>four was where I jumped in. I love the synthesizer,
<v Speaker 3>I love the guitar mix, the melody, and just those
<v Speaker 3>great great songs from my ten eighty four and so
<v Speaker 3>that transitioned me right into fifty one fifty, which is
<v Speaker 3>my favorite one of all time. But I think overall,
<v Speaker 3>I think there's a general sentiment out there that Sammy
<v Speaker 3>has a better voice, has more vocal range, has more
<v Speaker 3>musical ability. Right now, I'm willing to concede Dave is
<v Speaker 3>one of the top front men for any band of
<v Speaker 3>all time. I'm gonna talk out of both sides of
<v Speaker 3>my mouth here one sure. Yeah, so Dave maybe the
<v Speaker 3>best front man of all time.
<v Speaker 2>I mean, we're in a situation again like we were
<v Speaker 2>with Bad versus Thriller, where you love Thriller, you just
<v Speaker 2>love Bad Mold.
<v Speaker 4>That's right, that's right.
<v Speaker 3>Right as far as stage personality, and we already talked
<v Speaker 3>about the splits and the kicks and the jumps in
<v Speaker 3>the backflips. Same he can't do any of that stuff right,
<v Speaker 3>but he adds an element of musicianship that I think
<v Speaker 3>improves their music overall.
<v Speaker 2>So I did you know. I didn't write this down,
<v Speaker 2>but this is this is the thought that's occurring to
<v Speaker 2>me right now. Whenever Sammy Hagar came on the scene,
<v Speaker 2>I was like, yes, I even said it earlier in
<v Speaker 2>the episode. This is the perfect choice. He has guitar
<v Speaker 2>abilities that Dave didn't have. He's got a better singing voice.
<v Speaker 2>He's a hard rocker. I mean, you've got you know,
<v Speaker 2>I can't drive fifty five all of his songs with
<v Speaker 2>Montrose and his solo album, his solo career before that.
<v Speaker 2>And I'm super excited. But you know what else, I
<v Speaker 2>was really excited for the episode of Star Wars, the
<v Speaker 2>Rise of Skywalker. I was giddy, and I'm walking in
<v Speaker 2>and I got my Darth Vader shirt on, and I'm
<v Speaker 2>dressed in black, and I'm geeked out. And I sat
<v Speaker 2>there and I was just like, Okay, well this is
<v Speaker 2>not okay, this is what I thought it was gonna
<v Speaker 2>be but that's all right. I'm gonna give it full
<v Speaker 2>open mind. And I kept trying to love it, and
<v Speaker 2>I kept trying to love it, and where there was
<v Speaker 2>maybe a brief honeymoon period in the first five to
<v Speaker 2>ten minutes of the movie, after a while I was
<v Speaker 2>just going to I can't love this.
<v Speaker 3>I think you're way off base again, way off base.
<v Speaker 2>I had the honeymoon period with Van Hagar I did was.
<v Speaker 2>I liked their live album and they had in their
<v Speaker 2>transitional phase. They still sounded a lot like the original
<v Speaker 2>Van Halen. They still had all of those kicks going
<v Speaker 2>and Sammy was still rocking. But the honeymoon eventually wore
<v Speaker 2>off for me, and I just didn't feel like I
<v Speaker 2>felt like I had a bait and switch where it was,
<v Speaker 2>here's this awesome thing that you're getting, and now we're
<v Speaker 2>going to overproduce it, We're going to overdo it, and
<v Speaker 2>it's not the same anymore. It's no longer Van Halen.
<v Speaker 2>With the movie, man, the production value was incredible. I
<v Speaker 2>can't imagine the mouth they spent on it. But it's
<v Speaker 2>not Star Wars. Star Wars is dirty, and Van Halen
<v Speaker 2>should be dirty too. I want the dirt and the grime.

<v Speaker 2>and nasty and gritty and sex Yes.

<v Speaker 2>took some time thinking about this. There's you know, everybody
<v Speaker 2>talks about the introduction to the keyboards, but I mean
<v Speaker 2>he was playing keyboards in Women and Children first. I mean,
<v Speaker 2>he was playing keyboards way back. That couldn't be the issue.
<v Speaker 2>They became more prevalent in nineteen eighty four, for sure,
<v Speaker 2>They shocked a lot of the hardcore listeners, for sure,
<v Speaker 2>But that you listen to the lead guitar sounds that
<v Speaker 2>are coming out in nineteen eighty four, and it's still
<v Speaker 2>the same sounds of previous Van Halen you got from
<v Speaker 2>van Halen one on up through nineteen eighty four, Eddie's
<v Speaker 2>still playing the Frankenstrat guitar, and then the Frankenstrat starts
<v Speaker 2>to go away. In fifty one fifty you get new
<v Speaker 2>guitars coming in, and then in U eight one two
