It Sounds Like A Trade is Coming
Dave Dombrowski keeps saying the Phillies are “open minded” this offseason. He said it last month following the Phillies’ early exit in the NLDS. He said it a few more times this week at the GM Meetings in San Antonio.
“We need to be more open minded about possible moves.”
Ruben, Jim and Todd think Dombrowski is telling everybody that he is going to make a trade. Or two.
The guys talk about Dombrowski’s other comments at the GM Meetings, plus answer your questions, including ones about Alex Bregman, Mike Trout, Devin Williams, Steven Kwan, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Walker Buehler and more.

00:00:04 Speaker 1: Alright, this is Chase Utley. 00:00:06 Speaker 2: It's the Philly Show. 00:00:08 Speaker 1: Hello, Hello everybody, Reuben Tomorrow, Junior, Jim Salisbury, Todd Zo Lucky. It's Thursday, November seventh, twenty twenty four, brought to you by the File Territory Network. Gentlemen, good morning. We get up early to do this one because we just love to attack the day. 00:00:25 Speaker 3: Hey, just real quick, I'm doing great, Just real quick tonight Chase Utley and Ryan Howard going to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. Just wanted to make that mention, Ah, congratulately and play those two cats. 00:00:40 Speaker 1: We did the little. 00:00:42 Speaker 4: Those two guys very. 00:00:44 Speaker 3: Welcome served, I mean, and you start thinking about it, Jimmy, you know, you throw Jimmy Rollins in there, and the three of the best you know players at their positions in the history of the sport now in the history of Philadelphia. 00:00:57 Speaker 5: But just just wanted to mention that pretty awesome. 00:01:00 Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt, that's congratulations to them. Let's start, guys today. GM meetings wrap up today in beautiful San Antonio, and not a lot of craziness has come out of it. But I just and Dave Dombrowski talked on Tuesday to the Phillies beat writers there. I'm not at the GM meetings this week, but he talked to the athletic Matt Gelb and Scott Lauber and Locklan Merch from the inquir and didn't really say anything crazy or noteworthy necessarily. And he then did the big open group session yesterday in San Antonio, which is open to everybody in the media. Again, didn't really say anything or shattering, but I wanted to get your guys opinion on this because this is a particular phrasing that Dave has used in the session with the Philly writers and Philly reporters in Philly media in October Tuesday. Again Wednesday, again he gave this quote, we need to be more open minded about possible moves. He has said open minded probably five six seven times in his three media availabilities since the end of the season. Really sounds like somebody who is gunning to make a trade or is going to make a trade. 00:02:13 Speaker 5: That is my read on it. 00:02:14 Speaker 1: You know, Jim, you know, as a beat writer you kind of pick up on the way the cadence of how the people that you cover talk. And Dave doesn't say open minded a lot, and he certainly doesn't ram at home like he has been. Sounds like again a trade Alec Boem, Brandon Marsh, somebody like that could be dealt this offseason. 00:02:35 Speaker 2: Absolutely, that's what I'm picking up. And I think we thought that all along, because there's roster inflexibility, because of the age of players, because of the contract status, because of the money owed. Just you know, there's a lot of guys that are immovable. He says, open minded, not open wallet. They've spent a lot of money in recent seasons, and I just don't see that. You know, three hundred million dollars plus six spenditure this winter, So they're gonna they can't run it back. They ran it back last year. They were a quick out in the postseason, very disappointing for everyone. They need to make changes, need to make tweaks, need to make improvements. And yeah, when I hear open minded, I'm thinking trades. And and you know, he's kind of letting me in that he's open to maybe dealing a prospect. He's opened a dealing from his twenty five man rosters, forty man roster, and you could see a guy who was in the opening day lineup last year, moving on to me that really, you know, the guys with value or boem Stott Ranger, even though Ranger didn't pitch well second half. So I think that those are the areas he needs to hear. He probably is referring to when he's when he says he's open minded. H So I felt all along that this is this roster is kind of prime for trade. Shake things up a little bit, try to inch it forward where you can and see what happens. And he certainly seems to be hinting towards. 00:03:59 Speaker 5: That at first and foremost. 00:04:01 Speaker 3: Did you guys pick up on my cadence when I was a GM, like when I was going to be moving or you know, shaking and bacon or what. 00:04:07 Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm kind of curious. 00:04:09 Speaker 4: Yeah, I did you know? 00:04:10 Speaker 1: I Well, Ruben, I think I might have mentioned this story before when you were about to. 00:04:14 Speaker 5: Sign Cliff Lee. 00:04:15 Speaker 1: I know you were in Arizona, right like talking to Ben Francisco or something like that. 00:04:18 Speaker 5: I get dinner with him. 00:04:19 Speaker 1: And usually if a rumor was just total garbage, you would say not ridiculous, ridiculous or whatever you would say, right like, if it was total garbage, you would kind of. 00:04:31 Speaker 5: Dump on it. 00:04:32 Speaker 1: I remember calling you that night and I said, you know, there's these reports that things have heated up with Clifflee, and like Todd, I do not talk about rumors and free agents. You know that it's against the rules. I'm not commenting on any free agent pursuits. 00:04:46 Speaker 5: I don't do that. I'm like, that was that was my tell? That was your tell? 00:04:49 Speaker 1: So it's like, but actually I remember asking us. I said, Ruben, if it's usually if it's garbage, you'll say it's garbage. 00:04:55 Speaker 5: You go, I don't do that stuff. I don't do that. Souff's like hung up to the punt. 00:04:58 Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, something going down or something's going down in the next few days. And uh, you guys, I used to always uh. 00:05:07 Speaker 2: I used to say, uh, so does this guy give you any blood flow? 00:05:11 Speaker 4: And you'd say, no flow? How about how about this guy? You go moderate flow? 00:05:16 Speaker 2: So I I would know to keep an eye on a guy who gave you moderate flow. 00:05:21 Speaker 1: And uh, but you yeah, that is hilarious. 00:05:26 Speaker 3: But yeah, but I mean that's that's the beauty of what you guys do, is that you have the ability to know to know us and to and to pick up on some of those things. And that's, uh, that's probably what sets you guys apart as as journalists. So h and that's why I respect you so much and why I'm on this podcast with you guys. 00:05:43 Speaker 5: Yeah. 00:05:44 Speaker 3: Thanks anyway, No, I I just just wanted to I just wanted to actually say this that about the GM meanings truly. Typically you don't have a ton of stuff going on there. Every once in a while you'll finalize a deal that you've been maybe talking about. You so you saw what to Alex Anthopolis and perryman Aci and got a chance to do as far as you know, because they have a relationship, they were assistant GM GM, they work together and they ended up getting a deal with sol Aaron Canning. But typically you don't get deals done there. You sort of set things up to roll. But as far as what Dave Dombrowski said, I think that was it was an important piece of information that I do believe that this team cannot run. This team back talked to some people internally about it, and there's some questions about whether or not these guys are you know, the core players you're talking about the real Muto's. 00:06:36 Speaker 5: The Harper's Schworebers. 00:06:38 Speaker 3: And Castillano's that that group with who have a lot of money and Turner attached to them, whether they're really good enough or young enough to be able to carry this team for the next couple of years. There's some question about you know, JT kind of fell off a little bit, and it looks is it a physical thing? 00:06:58 Speaker 5: Is it not? 00:06:59 Speaker 3: I mean about the fact that he's not going to play as much, that kind of stuff. So it's interesting because we went into the same sort of mode in twenty eleven twenty twelve, like, Okay, where do we go now? 00:07:11 Speaker 5: Can we keep this team together? 00:07:12 Speaker 3: And that's where you see Dombrowski talk about being open minded. 00:07:17 Speaker 5: Now. I think that he may consider coupling. 00:07:22 Speaker 3: Now. I don't know if it's the right thing or the wrong thing to do, but they may couple some guys. Maybe he goes Stott and Castillanos and send them somewhere to open up the first strings a little, to do some different sort of things. 00:07:35 Speaker 5: So it'll be interesting to see. 00:07:36 Speaker 3: How creative Dave Dombrowski will be, how much payroll is a real issue, and how much they want to sort of maneuver the team around and make it a little different, because I do believe that running it back would probably not be the right thing to do. It's clear that it's not a good enough team yet it's a really talented team. Is it a good enough team to get to the World Series and bring home a trophy to Middleton? And I think it's you know, Dave de Browski's going to be a little bit more open minded, as he said, but also, you know, I think that there's going to be some twists and turns during the course of this during the course of this offseason, I still remain really steadfast about this. They've got to create starting pitching depth, and they have to create quality in the bullpen because they're short. They've lost two very very strong guys back there. So pitching pitching, pitching, and if they have to maneuver a bomb or a Stot or someone like that for pitching and to improve in some way, shape or form. I think that's something that Dave Debrowski's going to be focusing on. 00:08:42 Speaker 1: Well, that's something that Dave said yesterday in the group session. He says, we don't have a fifth starter right now. We're going to need somebody to fill another starting pitcher's role. He reiterated, Tianwan Walk is not going me handed the job. 00:08:53 Speaker 5: We know that. 00:08:54 Speaker 1: But you know, there are some free agent pitchers that are out there that maybe could hold the Ford down until Andrew Painters ready, or they could trade Ranger Suarez and sign a guy or two, you know, to to do something, you know, to fill a couple of needs. 00:09:07 Speaker 5: So lot you know. 00:09:09 Speaker 4: To me that you need a number five starter. That's not earthshaking. 00:09:13 Speaker 2: Now, all the years, in all the years that we've covered the Phillies, Todd, how many years were they looking to bill starting pitching depth? 00:09:19 Speaker 4: How many years were they looking for a backand starter every year? 00:09:23 Speaker 5: So this is no different. But it's more like the sixth, seventh, and eighth guys. 00:09:28 Speaker 3: For me, it's not because, I mean, let's look at it. You have Wheeler and Nola and they've been really healthy and not good for the Phillies. 00:09:36 Speaker 5: I mean, they've been healthy. 00:09:37 Speaker 3: If they're not healthy over the next couple of years, my goodness, it's a real toll on that team. And so I think it's so super important for them to to really shore up their their depth overall, not just a bit starter, but beyond that right. 00:09:51 Speaker 2: And we've been saying that all for months now. They need a six, they need a seven, they need eight because you use them all. 00:09:57 Speaker 1: And we saw it just some uh Dave, you know, of course, like we need a high leverage reliever right hander, we need an outfielder. He was asked yesterday will you be big game hunting this winter? And this was his quote. Our ownership allows us to do a lot of things, but sometimes that's not what you need. We have a lot of good star players on our team, so read that as you would. That's just more Wan Soda talk, basically saying, you know, we're going to dip our toe in the water. We had a whole episode on Tuesday. We spent Tuesday's that entire episode on one Soda. So if you want to know our thoughts on mon soda, go back and go back and check check out on out, check it out, and we will be right back. 00:10:36 Speaker 6: I love a great deal, but I'm not going to run sprints in the outfield just to save a few bucks. I want to mention Scott Boris had his session yesterday, which is always or you know, I think it was yesterday or two days ago, always entertaining. He did have one comment on Bryce Harper. He was asked about the Bryce Harper extension, which Scott mentioned last year at the winter meetings. He said, Bryce has certainly let it known to everyone ownership that he wants to finalize his stension in Philadelphia, and we've certainly let them know that we're ready to pursue that. 00:12:06 Speaker 5: It means nothing. Blob blah blah blah. 00:12:10 Speaker 4: Just wanted to bring it up. 00:12:11 Speaker 5: He's Bryce. 00:12:12 Speaker 1: This year's being the seventh year of his three hundred and thirty million dollar deals, still the eighth biggest contract guaranteed deal ever signed in baseball, but it's forty seventh in total AAV and average average annual values. So he's falling down the list on AAV and I know Scott would like to get that number boosted a little bit. 00:12:33 Speaker 5: It's not gonna get boosted. In fact, it's gonna go down. 00:12:37 Speaker 3: You think it's gonna keep going down, Yeah it is. I mean, as you get to older, how's it gonna get an AAV that's north of that? I just don't see it unless they squeeze the contract. I mean, and that's not gonnappen. I'm gonna take years off of the contract, So that's not happening. 00:12:51 Speaker 1: Yeah, So we asked for listener questions. Viewer questions, You guys want to answer a few here? 00:12:56 Speaker 5: Yeah, let's do. 00:12:58 Speaker 1: Uh, this is Robert rich On x. Alex Bregman seems like the perfect intermediary option versus the whale known as one. So do if they were able to trade Bom and acquire Bregman? What would that do to aiden Miller's path to the big leagues? 00:13:14 Speaker 2: Jim Well, First of all, Bregman has a qualifying offer. I think that would probably give the Phillies pause. 00:13:22 Speaker 4: Don't you, Todd? 00:13:23 Speaker 5: Yeah, I do. 00:13:24 Speaker 7: Uh. 00:13:24 Speaker 4: The Astros want him back. They're trying. So I don't know how realistic that is. 00:13:29 Speaker 2: But if you cement Bregman in a third for a while, you got Turner at under contract for a while. But I, you know, I still think there's a day he moves off shortstop, not not this year. So and Preston Mattingly told us last week that Miller is gonna get some reps at second base. 00:13:52 Speaker 4: I'm not sure it does a lot to his path. 00:13:54 Speaker 2: He still has, you know, positional options that they can slot him and if he's ready and he's produced, and they're going to find a spot for him. So I think it would have minimal impact. It just would probably impact at third base, where a lot of people think he's gonna end up, But like he is a shortstop and he might play some second base. It in terms of his time Tiller, it wouldn't worry me. But I just don't know that Bregmant is that realistic with that qualifying offer, because you're gonna have to give up your second you know, your second pick and your fifth pick, or your second highest pick and your fifth highest pick, and they need to get draft picks and build for the draft as well, so it's a tough one. 00:14:44 Speaker 3: I do like like Alex Bregman a lot of like for for this lineup because he sort of fits the bill. 00:14:51 Speaker 5: And want some guy with a. 00:14:51 Speaker 3: Little bit more contact, you know, a little He's obviously got pedigree. I love the player. You can do a lot of different things. You can blame more than third base too. He could probably play shorter seconds so he can bounce around. That said, I don't think it would stunt Aiden Miller's growth. I think that the Aiden Miller's going to get an opportunity, whether it's in the infield or outfield. I think he's instinctive enough to be able to maybe even play the outfield if necessary, So I don't think that will stunt his growth either way. But I just don't see it happening because I think Houston wants to really sign him back. They want to continue to be good. 00:15:24 Speaker 1: This one's a little out of left field, but it was something that's been mentioned a lot in previous offseasons, so I figured why not roll it out? There is from true rolled Putts on X. What kind of package deal would it take to lure Trout from the Angels? My vote is Nola Stott and McGarry or Abel. Now Mike Trout is going to be getting the seventh year of a ten year, three hundred and sixty million dollar deal. I asked a couple of people remember last off season about Trout, and immediately I was told, guys hurt all the time. Guy's hurt all the time, and he's owed a ton of money. He's hurt all the time, and he's owed a ton of money. 00:16:01 Speaker 5: But uh, what do you like about it? I'll go I'll go here. I think that Mike. 00:16:06 Speaker 3: Trout might have a great deal of respect for what he's done in the game, but the fact that he is declining a little bit as a player, but also his availability. Man, he just cannot you can't. This is not the right type of guy for this team. You need somebody different. It's just not going to happen as as much as people want him. Because he's sort of a local guy and he's an Eagles fan. That doesn't mean crap. The reality of it is is he's just not on the field enough. And I know he wants to be on the field, it's just not there. 00:16:40 Speaker 2: So, like you taught, that's a significant package. And the fact that would be impacted by how much money they picked up or the Angels aid and the Phillies picked up. 00:16:53 Speaker 5: So I mean, if they want to send Taiwan Walker. 00:16:56 Speaker 3: That there, that way, and then and then and then the Angels want to even out the money somehow. 00:17:01 Speaker 5: Yeah, of course, because you're going. 00:17:03 Speaker 3: You know, basically a player is not going to impact you, and you know, but I mean that's something. 00:17:10 Speaker 1: Bucks, right, He's beginning to say, well, whatever the math is, he's in the beginning of the seventh year next year of a three hundred and sixty million dollar deals, so he's got yeah, probably. 00:17:21 Speaker 4: Two Yeah, the hell in ability to get on feeling the money. 00:17:25 Speaker 2: I mean, to Taiwan Walker, that's a pittance at eighteen million compared to what he's owed. I just, yeah, I don't see that happening. 00:17:36 Speaker 1: No, that's not b Quinn seven two on X. How much say does John Middleton have and what the Phillies do this offseason? Does he give suggestions to Dombrowski or does he sit back and just let Dave run the show. I mean, in conversations I've had with John, he has reiterated, unprompted, over and over. I don't call Dave and say I want you to sign this guy, this guy, this guy. He's like, Dave will come to me and make a pitch for a guy, and then I will say, okay, yes, let's do it. 00:18:04 Speaker 5: He says. 00:18:04 Speaker 1: He almost always says yes if Dave wants to make a move on somebody. I don't think Dave is sitting there going you know what. I think, Let's go out and get Walker Bueller on a one year deal. Let's go out and get this guy to play third base. Let's go out and get this guy to play left field. Do you guys see it differently? 00:18:21 Speaker 4: I think I think John's the boss, and if you want something done. 00:18:24 Speaker 2: Dave's gonna do it. But I also think it's the relationship really built on trust and and John really trusts Dave's word. And uh, you know, Dave is the pilot. He sets the course and he mans the boat, and you know, if there's a significant transaction, he runs it by by John, and John's usually gonna trust him and and say, yeah, go for it. I mean case in point, Nick castianos he lingers out there a few years ago. 00:18:52 Speaker 4: They need one hundred million dollars. 00:18:54 Speaker 2: John says, yeah, let's go for it. So sure, like I said, he's the boss, he can he can you know, flex his muscles and his will if he wants to. But he's got a guy that he totally trusts at the reins and he's going to let him set the course and he'll he'll you know, check it off when it needs to be checked off. 00:19:14 Speaker 5: Yep. Totally agree with you, guys, Yep. 00:19:17 Speaker 1: John Robert goss on X Devin Williams is reportedly available. What would it take to land him? How would you address the bullpen depth with? 00:19:24 Speaker 5: Again? Righties? 00:19:26 Speaker 1: What would take to get a guy like Devin Williams? He's in the final year of his deal, he's gonna be making The Brewers declined their option on him, so I think they think he's going to make less than ten million or around ten million or less. What would it take to get a guy like that? Now I went back and looked, and now times have changed, I guess. But when the Phillies got Brad Lidge, they and Eric Brunlett, they traded Michael Bourne top position, Blayer prospect, Jeff Geary big league believer, Mica Stanzo minor league prospect. When they got Billy Wagner, it was Brandon Duckworth, big league pitcher, and two prospects, Taylor Buckoltz and Ezekielastasio. So you know, figure like what one big leaguer in a couple of prospects, what it would take to get somebody like Devin Williams. 00:20:05 Speaker 3: I think it would be an Alec Bohm for Devin Williams, straight up type deal. 00:20:08 Speaker 5: That's what I think it would be. Wow. 00:20:11 Speaker 3: And and I don't I don't know that that's something that they would happen, but I think that's uh that that that to me. You know, I think Boehmer Boemer they have two more years of control of and then Devin Williams just won. 00:20:22 Speaker 5: Is that correct, right? 00:20:24 Speaker 3: Yes, So so the Phillies may have to get something back for that, I believe it or not, because of the control and because of that fact that Alec Bowman. Everybody souring an Alec Bohm, but he's one of he was an All Star last year. He's one of the best basemen in the game. And so I mean, if you're gonna do if you're gonna do something like that, that's that's sort of the return that you would want to get, at least for for Alec Bohom, if you're gonna move him. I know that a lot of people have talked about that, and and I think that the Devin Williams thing, there's some people sort of soured on him. You know, we we got Brad Lidge and you talked about it. We got Brad Lidge as he came off that that breaking ball that he hung to the bootholes, well, this is a change up that he hung to uh to Peter A Lonzo and he ended up you know, uh, getting getting whacked around a little bit. But but the reality of it is my understanding is he was sort of tip tipping his pitches, and so I mean, this is one of the nastiest, you know, relievers in the game. That'd be a really interesting deal if they do make that deal. Something to consider. 00:21:27 Speaker 4: Keep hearing. 00:21:28 Speaker 2: Like, you know, people have soured on Bohm. You got a trade bomb. They better get a good package for Alec Bohm because he's a good player, really good better he's young. I actually like his competitiveness that he you know, sometimes he just needs to you know, uh rein it in a little bit and and modify it a little bit, channel it a little bit. But I'm a big Alec Bohm fan. I really think the best is yet to come. And you know, we always write those sometimes we always write those stories, Todd. Sometimes the best stories, the best trades are the ones you don't make. 00:22:00 Speaker 4: I feel like. 00:22:01 Speaker 2: Everybody's going to be there's a chance everybody could be riting next September. Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make. Because Alec Baum's I'm gonna having a really good season and he grew from this. So I'm not saying, you know, don't trade him, because sometimes you got to trade value for value, a good player for a good player, A good package for a good package, but I like Alec Baulm, you better get something good in return. You know, he got pissed off at the end of the season. He smashed his helmet. He he uh. 00:22:26 Speaker 4: Was you know, a little a little inmateur realized. 00:22:28 Speaker 2: Okay, I look at it as a growth moment. But if you're going to trade him, you better get something good for him. 00:22:33 Speaker 1: Alex Hunt, Alex Hunt forty four and x so stay in the same lane here. How do the Phillies get Stephen kwan Man? 00:22:38 Speaker 5: He would be kind. 00:22:40 Speaker 1: Of what the Yeah, he's got three years of team control left. I don't see I don't see it happening unless they just they'd have to pay something pretty big for him. 00:22:50 Speaker 3: No, now you're talking about the Crawfords and the and the Aiden Millers of the world then and the Painters of the world. 00:22:56 Speaker 5: Because this is one of the best hitters in the game. 00:22:59 Speaker 4: But he's a pillar of a playoff team. Why would they get rid of him. 00:23:02 Speaker 3: There's no right, no record at all unless they unless they feel like they have other people to replace him, and he's almost irreplaceable the way with the type of game he has, great defender, runs the base, as well, gets on base, great hitter, hits. I know he doesn't hit the bottle of the ballpark, but who cares? 00:23:18 Speaker 1: Right Owen's uh Swozzo on X Would you target Justin Verlander or Walker Buehler on a one year deal to pitch in that fifth spot till Painter is ready? I guess you could throw Max Scherzer in there too, on a one year deal. I remember Pac Gillick, and I know I've said this before, Pac Yellock, always you said there's no such thing as a bad one year deal. What do you think about one of those guys? 00:23:40 Speaker 2: I would target them all, depending on what the number is. Sure, But do you think Walker Buehler is just a one year deal? 00:23:47 Speaker 3: No, because I think he set himself up because he came back sort of helped you. I think the postseason, the fact that he came back and looked healthy. I mean I two years ago I thought Walker Buehler is going to be a lock for the CIA orient that you know, top three or four and Cy Young and he broke. But there's no way he's going to take it to a one year deal unless it's like that Pillow deal, and it's you know, you're talking about thirty five million dollars. 00:24:12 Speaker 2: Can I ask you guys that are kind of a this is a crazy question, but I think these are the kind of questions that happen in war rooms when you know Reuben and his team are there, because you throw a lot of a lot of stuff out there, right, some of it's wacky. I look at Surezer, and I know he's forty years old, he's had the back. It's really it's a tough call. But when you look at his stuff and where it's been, it's not the same. But the competitiveness, the know how would you entertain the idea? And I don't know he could do it because I don't know if he could pitch three days a week, if he could get ready and fifteen minutes. But would you entertain the idea of a back end come out and back end bullpen guy and just blow hard stuff and see what happens? 00:25:11 Speaker 5: I mean, I would entertain anything. 00:25:12 Speaker 3: I mean that's obviously being very. 00:25:15 Speaker 5: Open minded like a club. 00:25:17 Speaker 3: But look, but look what we did with Pedro, uh, with Pedro Martinez. I mean we ended up getting Pedro literally off out of the Dominican, you know, throwing BP and I think it's just it's important to be open minded that way. And obviously he's you know, Dave Nebrowski has a relationship with Suser, so who knows. 00:25:37 Speaker 4: I don't know if he do it, but. 00:25:38 Speaker 3: Berlander, Suzer, He's got a relationship with all those guys, so in a variety of ways. So it's it's interesting, great thought. I mean, yeah, I think you've got to be open minded in a lot of ways. I just don't know if he's physically capable of doing something like that, but I mean, and knowing that he could probably maybe maybe with. 00:25:55 Speaker 2: Vitation, but I just I look at that competitiveness, and I wonder if there's a second act there, brief maybe for just a year, all add John Smolts, But yeah, I wonder. 00:26:08 Speaker 1: I was gonna say, have Dave Dombrowski fly max Ers are in the town, get him on the golf course, get him on Marion with John Smoltz and just having chit chat for eighteen holes on being a closer Hall of Fame starter and a Hall of Fame closer about being about a boom it's done. 00:26:24 Speaker 3: Well, Sure is gonna be a Hall of Famer's no question you know that and if he really wants to win another ring and he feels like this is a challenge, Like sure, sir. He reminds me of a guy that likes challenges, and maybe this is a new challenge for him. 00:26:37 Speaker 5: It's a great idea, Jim. 00:26:38 Speaker 3: I think it's it's one of those things that, uh, I mean, you got to be creative, and that's a that's a piece of creativity that's sort. 00:26:45 Speaker 5: Of like out of the mind of Pat Gillick. 00:26:46 Speaker 3: And I think that's a great thought. 00:26:48 Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll be that would be a lot of fun. I think one last one Phillies baseballfan dot Com, which is Steve Potter, our friend Steve Potter, who covers the minor leagues, now writes about the minor leagues. He wants to know he thinks the Phillies are going to protect in the Rule five draft. I mean, I don't you guys don't have that list in front of you. But those guys like mick abel gin Cabrera, who's their minor league pitcher of the Year, Griff McGarry, Christian McGowan, Moysy's Chasse Eberson Castillano, they're Paul Owns Award winner Tristan Garnett Lefty. For me, it would be Able Chasse for sure, and then maybe maybe another guy in that mix. 00:27:23 Speaker 4: Maybe that Castano kid. Uh yeah, Ruben, he pitched for Zulia. He's a Zulia guy. 00:27:28 Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I understand. 00:27:29 Speaker 3: I have to get some do a get a scouting report for my brother who is a GM down there, my brother Luis. 00:27:36 Speaker 5: He's in my half brother, Luis, he's. 00:27:40 Speaker 3: You know, they got some players and they certainly don't want to lose them, so they're going to try to figure out ways to uh and I'm not sure what their forty man roster looks like right now. 00:27:48 Speaker 1: They're at thirty seven right now. 00:27:51 Speaker 3: So they may they may want to try to open up some space with a player or two. I know they're you're probably doing a little razzle dazzle and they got to protect him here what pretty shortly, right. 00:28:02 Speaker 2: Yeah, You've got to be detective of your pitching, your starting pitching, and able just say, I mean, yeah, just say what you saw of him and the castianos Kidd's daughter. I think the guy that I mean, Christian McGowan, you got to really think about it. I think he's kind of a bubble guy, whether or not he's a starter or reliever. 00:28:23 Speaker 4: I think people are kind of mixed on that. 00:28:25 Speaker 2: But you know, I know we've probably been talking about this name for so long that frankly, people might be getting tired of it and it's time to produce or go away. But the Griff McGarry's arm so tantalizing, Yeah, he'd I think you have to almost look at it like like, Okay, if I were an opposing GM, would I take a shot at Griff McGary. I mean the arm, you take a shot on the stuff, Maybe you take a shot on but the walks are just like, oh my god, So. 00:28:54 Speaker 5: He's a guy. 00:28:54 Speaker 3: So he's a guy, Jim that I see that a team would be able to hide because you have thirteen pitchers now and you can just hide. You can hide guys really easily in the major leagues, and you can bring him in at some point and there's so much swing and miss in this day and age that you just let him spin his breaking ball and just breaking ball after breaking ball after breaking ball, you never know what you got. Somebody will swing and miss edit enough that that he can start gaining some confidence and have success. 00:29:20 Speaker 1: Who knows he also he also might do you think they could lose him? Yeah, I think I think a team would take him. Yeah, I know that definitely. I feel like you guys in the past would take big arm guys and just bring him in the cam see what they can do. 00:29:32 Speaker 5: He might also. 00:29:33 Speaker 1: Benefit and not have an ABS system in the big leagues. You know, I think he misses a lot of pitches on the corners just because if it's you know, it's not the you know, automatic strike and whatnot. So yeah, interesting, interesting. Two final things I want to mention this. So when we did our Halloween episode, we were talking about our favorite Halloween candies, right, I mentioned Reese's Peanut party cups that say is. 00:29:53 Speaker 5: My favorite Halloween candy. 00:29:55 Speaker 1: And Pat writes from thought Tub Design he designed our man logo, our man Pat Designer logo the US in the bullpen cart. Uh. He heard, hears this, and he's like, what. 00:30:06 Speaker 5: He's upset with you. He's upset with He's up. 00:30:09 Speaker 1: Do you know why? Because of course, because he designed he's the logo man for Justin's Justice, which is also very good, which is also very good. 00:30:18 Speaker 5: Guess what Pat did? 00:30:20 Speaker 1: He called up his buddies at Justin's and sent me a huge box of Justin's Peanut Butter cups dark chocolate peanut butter with. 00:30:28 Speaker 5: Dark white chocolate peanut butterous. 00:30:31 Speaker 1: Tremendous, the candy pieces. And so I'm going to be sending you guys split everything up evenly. I'm sending you guys Justin's peanut butter trifectas. So I want to give a shout out to Pat for thinking of us. 00:30:44 Speaker 3: Sorry, They're really good and the design is spectacular. 00:30:49 Speaker 1: The design my son, my son had the white chocolate once, She's like, these are really good, really good. 00:30:55 Speaker 2: So he was, you know, do you know what I would say to a case Do you know what I would say to a case of peanut butter cups? 00:31:00 Speaker 5: What would you say? 00:31:01 Speaker 7: Yes? 00:31:01 Speaker 5: You would say yes, I. 00:31:03 Speaker 4: Would say, come to Papa. 00:31:08 Speaker 1: And then, so thank you Pat, thank you Justin's for sending us this awesome care package.
