Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: Final Hour on this Monday, Hall of Famer Steve Young will stop buying about twenty minutes more phone calls best and worst of the weekend. Once you saw that you liked you didn't like. Saturday Night Oregon Penn State. That'll be on Saturday Night NBC and Peacock. Here comes Saturday Night presented by Discover.

00:00:24
Speaker 3: Good morning.

00:00:25
Speaker 2: If you're watching this show on Peacock, college football rams up this next week. Now, all of a sudden it gets really serious, led by the Penn State Oregon game. A few surprises over the weekend. Texas Tech might be what we think they are. They certainly got hyped. But Utah. Most people thought Utah would win that game. Oklahoma not going away. Miami is now number two in the country. This is where you can take away all those preseason rankings. Now this is the real This is where it's like, Okay, that team is good, that team's not good, loses to Syracuse. There now one win on the season. Indiana rolls Indiana. Is you know we were looking for the who's the Indiana team this year?

00:01:10
Speaker 3: Like last year?

00:01:11
Speaker 2: It turns out it's Indiana is the Indiana team, and they might be better than last year. But LSU, Miami, Oregon, Florida State, Texas, they all roll and Michigan Ghost Nebraska ends up winning that game as well. Tonight you got the Lions. They're getting four and a half at the Ravens. Both teams come in at one in one wild finishes Yesterday certainly the one o'clock games. Eagles come back, Chargers quietly beat the Broncos, Browns over the Packers. They just kind of waited, They hung around and the Packers didn't put them away. Bears over the Cowboys, Buccaneers over the Jets, Vikings. That was impressive. That was very depressive if you're a Bengals fan. And Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk just joined us in studio and he said he doesn't think the Bengals are going to give up draft picks or spend that kind of money to bring in Kirk Cousins. And if I'm the Falcons and I have designs on being a playoff team, I don't know if I want to get rid of Kirk Cousins, because he might still be your best option after what happened yesterday, It's not that they lost, it's they didn't score. And I always think Atlanta is going to score. Their defense is usually an issue. Well, both sides of the ball were an issue. The Seahawks quietly rolling along. They didn't need much. It was like turnovers and returns, and next thing you knew, they were dominating that game. Chiefs over the Giants. The booze are starting for Russell Wilson Junior the third Do you put Jackson Dart in a home game against the Chargers or do you wait on the road the following week and you will be in New Orleans. But it feels like it's inevitable that it's going to happen. You know, the Bengals can go from two to zero to probably two an if I look at the schedule here, So they beat the Browns, they beat the Jags, they got blown out yesterday, they got at the Broncos. That's a Monday night game. Then they're hosting the Lions, They're at the Packers, and then they host the Steelers. It doesn't get much easier for them. And now you find out best case scenario, Joe Burrow could be back at the end of the regular season or start the postseason, and my point is he might be back for the postseason, but not a postseason in Cincinnati eight seven to seven to three, DP show email address Dpatdanpatrick dot com, twitter handle at DP show Pole question for the final hour of the program. By the way, is there any bandwagon aside from your favorite team that you're jumping on? Anybody with me? With the Colts? Anybody on that bandwagon?

00:03:52
Speaker 1: Todd?

00:03:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, I saw what they can do against my team, and the fact that they never punt and they score almost every single time they get the ball.

00:03:58
Speaker 5: It's hard not to believe in the calls, even after just three weeks.

00:04:01
Speaker 3: Anybody on Chargers bandwagon that was oh wow? Okay? Front row Paulie and Marvin, Yeah, paul.

00:04:09
Speaker 6: I saw a throw. I don't know if you guys saw this by Herbert. He got rushed and he rolled left while getting hit and threw it across his body for a touchdown. It may be the single best throw ever seen where.

00:04:21
Speaker 3: Wait, ever, of all throws that you've ever seen, not.

00:04:24
Speaker 6: As an importance, but in physical skill. I got to show this to you and a look, and they may be showing it to you on TV right now. I don't think three guys in the world can make this throw, Mahomes Herbert Aaron Rodgers five years ago.

00:04:38
Speaker 3: Wait, this is the greatest throw that you've ever seen.

00:04:41
Speaker 6: Yes, from a physical standpoint of how few people can master it and do it. He was rolling to his left and kind of twisted his body and threw a strike the other way in the end zone.

00:04:52
Speaker 3: Okay, I'm gonna asked Steve Young about that.

00:04:55
Speaker 7: Yes.

00:04:57
Speaker 2: By the way, Herbert is a twenty seven years, one hundred and ninety five days, the youngest player in NFL history to reach two thousand career completions. He did so in his eighty second career game, the second fastest to reach two thousand career completions to Patrick Mahomes eighty one games. So he's the youngest to do it, and he needed eighty two games. Mahomes needed eighty one, Yes, Todd.

00:05:22
Speaker 4: Also the combination of the enthusiasm Jim Harbwell brings and the fact that the first three games on their schedule all division opponents, so they've already beat all of them at least once, so they could either sweep.

00:05:32
Speaker 5: Them or no worse than split with their division. That's pretty huge. Three games there.

00:05:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, yes, Marvin, and.

00:05:39
Speaker 8: I think the Chargers have the best defender of football in Derwin James. I think he's almost like Jonathan Taylor, but on the defensive end, where he's been maybe the best at his position, but no one really talks about it on the national level.

00:05:51
Speaker 2: Okay, so they have a quarterback who threw the greatest pass ever and they have the best defensive player in football.

00:05:58
Speaker 9: And we're clearly not overrecked.

00:05:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, no over reaction here, yes, no recency bias, no morning after no, no, not at all. All Right, did we come up with a pole question for the final hour Seaton?

00:06:12
Speaker 10: Yeah, we got two of them up there right now. This weekend's come back to haunt you game right now? Packers Brown's still had about forty percent of that, followed by Rams Eagles. Then we also have up there win of the weekend. I only have room for four options, so Panthers fans, Panthers didn't make that cut, which maybe they should have, but just in the comments they're represented very well. But the win of the weekend your options there, Indiana, Syracuse, Chargers Bears Indiana got about forty four percent of that vote.

00:06:42
Speaker 2: There was a moment postgame last night Chris Jones, the Chiefs defensive lineman. He was interviewed by Melissa Stark and it starts with her question, all right, you told.

00:06:52
Speaker 11: Us that you have asked Russell Wilson multiple times for his jersey to do a jersey swap and you've never gotten one.

00:07:00
Speaker 9: Did you ask him again tonight?

00:07:01
Speaker 3: I don't even want it.

00:07:02
Speaker 9: That's all good.

00:07:03
Speaker 3: I don't want it. Hey, do you know over.

00:07:05
Speaker 12: Time you kind of understanding that now I don't even want it because.

00:07:09
Speaker 3: Love and war.

00:07:10
Speaker 2: Wow, Okay, seemed a little aggressive there that you don't want it. Yes, Marvin, this.

00:07:18
Speaker 8: Is hurting his Hall of Fame chances even more for Russell Wilson.

00:07:22
Speaker 3: He's a Hall of famer, He's going to be a Hall of famer.

00:07:25
Speaker 8: The recency bias is going to hurt him.

00:07:27
Speaker 3: I know, I know. I love that.

00:07:31
Speaker 2: You know the idea that we had if you reversed careers, and you know, could you imagine reversing Stafford's career and Russell Wilson's career where he starts out like this and he's not good at all, bounced around to a couple of teams, then all of a sudden goes to a team and goes to two super Bowls, or you flip it around with Stafford and Stafford you know, struggles or starts out with a super Bowl win and then this season and then he will, you know, go to a team that's a losing team and sometimes, you know, we would look at you differently because all you're just holding on you're washed like Russ. Whereas if you flipped it around and you could go, oh man, look at the success that he's having.

00:08:14
Speaker 3: Yes, Marvin, but.

00:08:15
Speaker 8: It's gonna be tough because when you look at pro football, you know his stats, it's going to say Seahawks than Broncos, then Steelers than Giants where it was not eventful for three other franchises.

00:08:28
Speaker 2: Is this his last time? Does Russell Wilson play for another team?

00:08:35
Speaker 3: Paul?

00:08:35
Speaker 6: Can he accept a backup role and backup pay?

00:08:40
Speaker 3: I think he would be a good cheerleader.

00:08:42
Speaker 9: He's not getting the reins to another franchise.

00:08:44
Speaker 2: You know, okay, But is he playing on another team next year or would he just stay there and be a backup quarterback. See that's the amazing part with Kurt Warner. You went from an offense that was reinventing offenses in the NFL and the greatest show on turf. And then you go and you back up Eli Manning, and I'm thinking, how did that happen? And then you have this career resurgence where you get into the Hall of Fame because what you did with Arizona, taking them to the super Bowl and nearly winning that.

00:09:19
Speaker 6: Yeah, Paully, I'm gonna throw this out there. This is a sports radio trade with almost no thought behind it. If you're the Bengals, would you give a low ball offer to the Giants for Russell Wilson. He's not making a lot of money. The Giants would probably you're doing them a favor. They could move to Jackson Dart and get a draft pick and maybe Russell would be decent with really good receivers around him.

00:09:42
Speaker 3: Well, you have to believe that Russell can still play over Jake Browning.

00:09:48
Speaker 6: Yes, or you just say this season is a wash and you're on the Bengals and we're doing nothing. But you could send a fourth round draft a fifth round draft pick and grab Russell Wilson right now. Yeah, and he's out making any money.

00:10:01
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:10:04
Speaker 6: The Cousin's trade is a much much bigger deal financially and salary capwise.

00:10:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't do that.

00:10:12
Speaker 2: I mean you might just hold on for dear life with Jake Browning. Now he's he's shown that he can play the position. He just hasn't shown that he could play the position very well this year.

00:10:22
Speaker 8: Yes, Mark, you still have Matthew Stafford going to the Hall of Fame. Yeah, like first ballot.

00:10:28
Speaker 2: I don't know about ballots, but I would say he's Hall of Famer over time.

00:10:33
Speaker 8: Yeah, because that one Pro Bowl is still.

00:10:35
Speaker 2: I know, I know, and then Russ made like ten Pro Bowls, right, Yeah, I think Matthew Stafford, Yeah, I do. Uh.

00:10:46
Speaker 3: Tula in Washington, I Tula, Good.

00:10:50
Speaker 13: Morning, Dan, Good morning Dennetts.

00:10:52
Speaker 3: How are you great?

00:10:54
Speaker 14: Good?

00:10:56
Speaker 13: That's the worst of the weekend. I'm gonna pull a seat and I'm gonna double down here. Best of the weekend was Aaron Glenn's sideline dance. That's phenomenal like that. Another best of the weekend was Jordan Davis giving us a finally a good Jordan's story in football. And worst of the weekend was Apple cut. My Cougars took a beating hard so proud though.

00:11:26
Speaker 3: All right, well, thank you, Tula. Yeah.

00:11:29
Speaker 2: I love flipping around, usually watching games that I don't think anybody else is watching. Now it's like, let me watch Washington State. Okay, David in Ohio, Hi David, what's on your mind today?

00:11:43
Speaker 13: Yeah?

00:11:43
Speaker 11: Dan?

00:11:43
Speaker 12: I got two best of the weekend. First one goes to Aaron Ayahuasca Rogers, who somehow edged out the Patriots, proving that the throwback uniforms may look cool, but they can't teleport you to New England, back to the Brady years. And the other best is, of course, the Cowboys, who got beat so bad that what Shane Irving calls Caleb Williams quote fingernails, that maybe Dak Prescott should grab a bottle of polish himself. Clearly, nail ard is a more effective offensive scheme than whatever Dallas is running.

00:12:14
Speaker 3: Thank you all right, David?

00:12:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, Now is everybody back in with Caleb Williams because it felt like last week everybody was out that this isn't gonna work out, that you know, that relationship between coach and quarterback, yes' Marvin.

00:12:28
Speaker 8: No, this is gonna happen every single week somebody plays the Cowboys because Russell Wilson last week went off and Caleb Williams this week went off because you're playing a bad secondary. OK, he'd be like, uh, oh is Russ back? Is he back to coaching? No, it's not even a sous chef.

00:12:43
Speaker 3: The Colonel in Tampa joins us hey, Colonel.

00:12:48
Speaker 7: Team Tampa, Team Tampa. Hey. My best of this weekend was two great athletes, Daniel, Two great athletes who might you say, Roger Daltrey and the younger Pete Townsend. Great concert in Hollywood Bowl, made it back to see one other great thing. And who's that?

00:13:10
Speaker 15: Dan?

00:13:11
Speaker 7: Who's that?

00:13:11
Speaker 3: That's Baker Mac.

00:13:13
Speaker 7: Number Duca, Baker to number Duca and Buca. That's what I got for you, buddy.

00:13:18
Speaker 3: Thanks, thank you. Colonel. Yeah.

00:13:20
Speaker 2: The who's still out there? I don't know what they sound like. Bob Dylan's still out Bob Dylan's still out there. I think he was doing farm Aide, Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson. I think Dave has kind of taking that over a little bit. Uh farm maid it was back in eighty five. Maybe John Mellencamp, Yeah, Mellencamp, Willie Dylan's been involved in that. But uh yeah, the who's still out there. Let's see Jim in Michigan. Hi Jim, what's on your mind today?

00:13:53
Speaker 7: Hey?

00:13:53
Speaker 2: Dan?

00:13:54
Speaker 16: A worst of best of unsports related but the worst of I'm gonna be with Marvin on this one with the Tigers. I mean, we don't even know what's going on there. Best of Sister came in and visited the family from West Virginia. That was cool. And I kind of have a situation with the with the tush push. Not really a penalty, but maybe if you go ahead and use the tush push, you know, you're usually backed up and you have to do it, and you're down on that end, why not give the other team if you don't make it, like an advantage by bringing them out to the twenty yard line or even the fifty yard line. So it's not really a penalty, but you know, you have to ask yourself on both occasions, do I really want to do this? And if I don't make it, you know the other team has more of an advantage.

00:14:41
Speaker 2: I just I don't want to gimmick up things, you know. I like I like subtracting from rules, not adding to them. And it just feels like the NFL is great at adding something to it. It's just hard to officiate it. But really it's it starts at the line of scrimmage. You know, is the defense in the neutral zone? Probably is the offensive line jumping? Probably can you spot the ball accurately? Probably not just start there. That's it's reason enough for them to get rid of the play next year. I personally don't have a problem with it.

00:15:24
Speaker 3: I don't.

00:15:24
Speaker 2: I think they do it really well. They're going to continue to do it well, even if it's just a quarterback sneak. But I understand the aesthetics of it. It's a predictable play. It's like the extra point and then they had to alter that because it was too predictable. I even thought of this, what if we didn't allow you to kick field goals unless it was fifty yards or more.

00:15:46
Speaker 9: This is my kind idea.

00:15:47
Speaker 2: This is something there that you can't kick a field goal. You can only kick a field goal from fifty yards or further. You have to go for it constantly, and it feels like, you know, the new analytics is everybody's going for it now. Even in the Bears game, you know, Tom was calling the game and Brady was like, I don't know about fourth and goal. And then Caleb had you know, a wide open touchdown there, and you know these offensive coordinators they're going for it now. At least that's the new analytics, the new math. All right, let me take a break. Hall of Famer Steve Young joins us next Dan Patrick Show.

00:16:23
Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

00:16:55
Speaker 15: And me, Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should be good at it because you've been over promising women for years.

00:17:35
Speaker 3: More phone calls coming up. Update the poll results as well.

00:17:39
Speaker 2: We welcome back the Hall of Famer three times Super Bowl champ and Super Bowl MVP Steve Young back on the program. Paully just telling me about the Justin Herbert throw and said it might be the greatest throw he's ever seen. Physically, the greatest throw that he's ever seen. Dan Orlovsky of the Mothership said only five players can make that pass. You've seen the play. How great was the pass by Justin Herbert?

00:18:09
Speaker 11: It was amazing And I agree with that. Physically, what you have to be able to do the strength to climb the pocket, to be mobile enough to find the space. I thought for a second he might throw it left handed the way how good he is, But he did grable with his right going left and across his body. I mean, it's just it's why you'd always think, why do guys get paid?

00:18:33
Speaker 18: Why are quarterbacks?

00:18:34
Speaker 11: It's a really tough job Dan, as you know, and to me, Justin's a guy like, first of all, just take it from an artistic perspective. I mean, if you're just an appreciator of the throwing motion as an art form, Justin Herbert is the Mona Lisa right like he He and Andrew Luck in my mind were the two guys. When I watched them throw, I'm like, oh, you know, you get light headed. You know, you're like, oh that's Nice's.

00:19:01
Speaker 18: That is sweet?

00:19:02
Speaker 11: You know, people around me when I'm watching him play, like Steve relaxed, bro, it's you know, it's not the But but then he's been unleashed a little bit with Jim and Harbough.

00:19:12
Speaker 18: I appreciate. Uh. He was like a kept man and I didn't like it. He was getting beat up.

00:19:17
Speaker 11: He was hanging in the pocket too long, and I think, you know, I really liked when he's come out this season. He won a game with his legs the other day, Like he is more mobile in his mind. Like, Okay, I'm attacking the line of scrimmage, and you know how I feel about that. You have to be able to attack a liant of scrimmage in today's game because it's so much of a differentiator and there's so much free yards and touchdowns to go get. So as you think about that throw he was doing that, I'm I don't see anybody.

00:19:45
Speaker 18: I'm gonna start.

00:19:45
Speaker 11: Get out of the pocket, try to find some space. I might run it, I might throw it. And so he's the kind of like Josh Allen, who were the five, he thinks that can do it. I mean, it's Patrick, it's Josh Lamar could maybe do that. It's uh Joe Burrow. I mean you know, I mean, it's just there's a few guys, right, there's a few guys that.

00:20:04
Speaker 3: Could do that. Aaron Rodgers maybe Aaron.

00:20:07
Speaker 11: You know, I mean Aaron in you know, a little younger Aaron. Maybe I think that Aaron's a little bit more sedate. But yeah, I think that there's no question as far as arm capability and athleticism.

00:20:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, is there a team you jumping on the bandwagon? Now you've seen enough where you go, all right, I'm all in on them.

00:20:28
Speaker 11: Well, you have to kind of say Philadelphia, because they're they're they're built the locker room, they've been tested, they've been battle tested, they've been through it. And then you know, to see what happened yesterday is one of those catapults like, oh, yeah, it's happened, and I know it's still the preseason in September. It takes three or four weeks of a of a of this of the year, you know, of of the seasons these days, where you know, preseason is not really preseason.

00:20:55
Speaker 18: This is the preseason. So you just don't know for sure.

00:20:58
Speaker 11: But if I had to bet on a team that's going to be there at the end, I would say the Bills, and the and the and the Eagles.

00:21:05
Speaker 2: I watched the Bears and the Cowboys and it was entertaining. But it's one of those games that I'm not sure if it means anything. It was just entertaining. At the end of the year, we might look back and say, oh yeah, Caleb, it look great against the Cowboys. Do you have an idea of how good these teams are?

00:21:24
Speaker 18: No, And I don't they know, No one could.

00:21:26
Speaker 11: I mean, like I said, today's game, they limit so much the time between coaches and quarter and quarterbacks and the team players with quick OTAs and then a preseason that's abbreviated, and they can't you know, it's not gonna lot of contact.

00:21:39
Speaker 18: It's like, look, they throw the free agency is as wild as ever been.

00:21:43
Speaker 11: Like you throw a team together and then you just you know, it's like throw the mechanic in the trunk, right, we're gonna we're gonna figure it out as we go. And so that's why I say, the first four weeks you really don't know who you are. The really good teams show up, the really bad teams show up, and everyone in the middle is like, Okay, let's just hope we're two and two or three one at the end of this and then we'll start to figure out who we are. But to me, that game, like the Cowboys are just I mean, you've heard me talk about it forever. They're just flawed from the top because they don't, you know, the owner doesn't empower the coach to go get anything done, and so it's just in the end they just flail around. So I don't the Cowboys, I just whatever.

00:22:21
Speaker 18: The Bears.

00:22:22
Speaker 11: I mean, look, they have a coach that's proven offensive mine, an innovative mind, and Caleb quarterbacks.

00:22:28
Speaker 18: There's ten places like that.

00:22:30
Speaker 11: It is more than that now because I really think the league's got a lot more innovative minds thanks to Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay and Andy Reid and their trees and Sean Payton. Their trees of coaches are now flooded the NFL, so it's better for quarterbacks. And so I think coach Johnson, I think Caleb. I think they'll be a good marriage. As he's look, the coach has never had a mobile quarterback before. He said, look, I've never coached a mobile quarterback. Well, you know, there's things that are new there. So there's that even preseason going on. But I love what happened for the Bears yesterday. They needed it and it is just a sign that there's life there.

00:23:02
Speaker 3: What's different with Daniel Jones.

00:23:05
Speaker 18: You know when he was in New York, if you think about it, when they quieted his mind down, Daniel is one of those guys that's very athletic.

00:23:11
Speaker 11: He thinks he can do it all. And what he tries to do it all things go. You know, the oil starts to fly all over there. You know, it's just, you know, it's crazy. And so what he was when they quieted it down and asked less and ran the football and simplified things, it got better. And so I think what's happened is you got to one of those places where you know it's an offensive mind that clicks with him and they run the football and you know how it works, Dan, Things get simpler when linebackers and safeties are freaking out worried about running the football all of a sudden play action bam. And when things are clear and simple for him, he can perform. And so I think that's how it works, and I think it can happen. I mean, I don't think it's just a fluke. I think that Daniel can be under the right circumstances. The truth is, I think a lot of guys, if they can find the place that resonates with them, which is not everywhere, which is not even.

00:24:06
Speaker 18: Half of the teams. Quarterback. If I've said to you many times.

00:24:10
Speaker 11: If I could play today and I could run to any you know football NFL team today, where would you want to play? Well, there's three that I'd run to right now, and then there's ten that I would like, Eh, all right, I'll go there, and there's fifteen.

00:24:25
Speaker 3: I'm like, no, give me the teams you would run to.

00:24:29
Speaker 11: I've got to San Francisco out the Rams and the Chiefs. Those are the innovative minds that for someone that since the rule changes in ten years ago or eight years ago, they're the ones that had the tactical advantage because of their innovation, because they saw the opportunity and immediately, you know, with them, incredible minds just started to change the game. And you remember what and then you know they've had to reiterate and reinvent themselves as their coaches went out were hired by other teams because they saw what happened with Miami and Minnesota and Green Bay and like you just go around the lead. Now it's everywhere to Jacksonville. Like there's guys that have just come from those trees that have innovative minds that have seen it and go, Okay, this is what we're gonna do. That's why I think the technical advantage from those guys is gone. You know, it's lost a little bit, but they have to reinvent themselves again. But those are three places I would sprint to.

00:25:21
Speaker 2: Talking to Hall of Famer Steve Young, if you were gonna give advice, what quarterback do you think needs advice?

00:25:32
Speaker 18: What do you mean, like like every quarterback?

00:25:35
Speaker 9: What are you?

00:25:35
Speaker 18: What are you talking about?

00:25:36
Speaker 3: Like you mean like Josh Allen? Does Josh Allen need advice?

00:25:41
Speaker 18: Well, everybody's.

00:25:42
Speaker 11: Everyone has to continue to iterate their game and really take the positives. Like Josh, he was trying to be Superman. It wasn't really advice that I would give to his game. It was like, please please Bill's please Bill's offense. Please give him some help so that he doesn't have to be Superman all the time. Because when you have to be Superman all the time, just like Patrick Mahomes was trying to be Superman four or five years ago, then you get into games and you just things go, hey, why are again? Like you have to be able to calm your mind to be you know, delivered from the pocket, not have to be Superman every play. And then when they ask you to for four or five plays a game like, yeah, no problem. And so everyone needs advice and everyone needs help, and it's not necessarily about them. So much of it is you know, everyone says, Oh, the commodity in the NFL is coaching. Yeah, just get a coach, Like that's the offensive coordinators, the play callers, the best in the game are like the Josh Allens are, like the Patrick Mahomes are, like the Lamar Jackson's. There's there's a few, and you've got to search them out and find them and and and when they when they meet another great talent.

00:26:47
Speaker 18: That's why people go to the super Bowl.

00:26:49
Speaker 11: And so just do not think that the talent to be a great offensive coordinator, and especially an innovative kind of game we have today where there's all kinds of cool stuff you can do. Those guys are differenterentiators. So the advice I would give to quarterbacks, every one of them find somebody like that, because they're not They're not a diamond dozen, that's for sure.

00:27:11
Speaker 2: What would you say to Lamar Jackson if he came to you and said, Steve, what do you think of my mind?

00:27:15
Speaker 11: Ooh, I would love that because Lamar is my guy. Like, I think Lamar can be the greatest player of all time. And I've said this for years, and I think the Ravens have hurt. They hadn't hurt me. I mean, they don't care. But I'm just saying four or five years ago, they were the most sophisticated running game in history, and they win a lot of games, and they'd go to the playoffs and just flail because the game is a sophisticated passing game.

00:27:40
Speaker 18: Is still what matters. Great running games are great.

00:27:43
Speaker 11: But and then Lamar just was not being challenged to be a sophisticated passer and I knew he could be. And then a couple of years ago you saw them transition and they got the help he needed a receiver and made a commitment to it and believed in him and then started to call a place to do that. So I think that transition is happening and that's why Lamar's continues to thrive and can get better and better. I would say to Lamar, keep on this track. Make sure every week that you're doing the study. Like it's quarterback sucks in a lot of ways during the week because it's a it's a it's a memorization game. It's reflexive memorization, so that when you get to the game, you've studied enough that you know that all the tendencies you know, you know in the red zone, blitz tendencies, you know, you watched enough film. So much of it is just a mind game. And I would just tell him, like he is obviously doing the work, just double down every every every week, every season, like double down on the mind game.

00:28:41
Speaker 3: How much of the position is being an entertainer.

00:28:46
Speaker 18: Look, I would I wouldn't call it entertainer. I would call it psychologist.

00:28:52
Speaker 11: Like you, the game really demands a dynamic human being that can deal with people, you know, bespoke right where everybody is different and everybody needs to be Some guys can get yelled at, and some guys you can't yell. You got to kind of like pat them on the back. Some guys you got to find different ways to communicate it. But you always have to be accountable and it's just a dynamic situation. So the entertainment part is really in the in the doing and in the getting the guys together, getting your office aligning to believe that it's okay that you get paid ten times that the amount they do and they have to get in a fight every week and you don't, and you get to be on TV, and like there's all kinds of dynamics in the locker room, there's dynamics with the media. So in that way, I would say, yeah, that's a huge quot the way you're asking the question. But I don't think it's necessarily like can you sing and dance? Like it's there's fundamentals to it. It's it's a it's a like I said many times, I poured myself into playing and there's nothing like it, and ever since, there's nothing like what I had to do to try to be good in the or great the in the NFL. And so in that way, the four quarterbacks are just it's an awesome, brutal opportunity to be amazing if you can figure out how to pour yourself into it and give everything ounce of yourself.

00:30:06
Speaker 7: But that.

00:30:08
Speaker 11: Entertainment side of it, that's pretty you know, to me, that's what it's entertaining to Dan When you're good or you're great, when you're winning and you're and you're making great plays like justin Herbert, that's entertainment, right, Is that what you're talking about.

00:30:19
Speaker 18: Yeah, like that's that's excellence.

00:30:22
Speaker 11: That's just the that's the tip of the spear kind of awesome physical, emotional, like the really the way he got there was not just because he's a great athlete and why you got there is because he's a gritty, tough, minded, you know, dynamic human being that can get everybody fired up to go play some go ram into people and and get into a fight and support you.

00:30:42
Speaker 18: So to me, yeah, that's entertainment and it is you have to have that.

00:30:47
Speaker 2: I asked this question last week. What do you hear when you're in the pocket? Like when you step up in the pocket, what do you what do you hear?

00:30:56
Speaker 18: I heard Reggie White yelling like he was screamed, like he was a screamer. Like Reggie's like like you heard him coming like a train.

00:31:03
Speaker 3: He would just like.

00:31:09
Speaker 11: What, bro, you're already you're six six five hundred now with the screaming, you know, but you know it's like the white noise of the crowd, Like people say, do you what do you hear? It's like it's just it's the job. It's it takes so much focus and so much like you think about just the anticipatory throwing as you see people moving and now know how to you know where you need to let it go. At the time you need to let it go. Nobody's open. Nobody's like, oh he's open, let me throw it. Like that's college, man, that's high school. Like, nobody's open. When you throw it, you have to throw it well before something happens. And so in that way, that focus is so great that it's not like, oh, I you know, I regially I did here. I have to admit that's why I said it. But but I just it's just it's just white noise.

00:31:57
Speaker 18: It's like just whatever, like, uh, you know I didn't. Uh.

00:32:01
Speaker 11: And then you know, if no one here, I mean, you hear it. The only thing you hear is is after the play, you know, stupid. I mean, what defensive line has ever said anything?

00:32:11
Speaker 18: You really understand?

00:32:12
Speaker 11: You know how the their faces pushed to the helmet, you know, and you know your mother, I'm like, my mom, want.

00:32:18
Speaker 3: What's the problem?

00:32:21
Speaker 11: But did they You're screaming something that I don't I don't get your your face is squished in your helmet.

00:32:28
Speaker 18: You don't You're you're gurgling something.

00:32:30
Speaker 7: I don't know.

00:32:31
Speaker 18: What you're talking about, Bro.

00:32:32
Speaker 3: They tried to trash talk you.

00:32:34
Speaker 11: Yeah, but you don't understand that. Like, I know you're trying to get to me, but Bro, I cannot understand you.

00:32:39
Speaker 7: Man.

00:32:42
Speaker 3: But Lawrence Taylor, any of those guys, it's.

00:32:45
Speaker 11: Like, you know, it's like just a bunch of gobbledygook. I mean the safeties. What's in corners of safeties? I was like, you know, the defensive lineman. Just no, no, not much there.

00:32:57
Speaker 3: Did Dion ever trash talk you?

00:32:59
Speaker 11: Oh? Oh, he's the best best, you know, he told me Dan, it was amazing when he joined the forty nine ers.

00:33:05
Speaker 18: He turned me.

00:33:06
Speaker 11: He grabbed me early and said, look, Steve, what I want you to know is that I'm an amazing teammate and in the locker room, I do my prep. I'm ready to play, and you'll never doubt me the rest of it. Just get some popcorn and watch the parade, bro, because it's a it's a good one. And he was exactly right. He never he was always ready to play. He was a creatible teammate. He was great in the locker room. And there was a parade, man, and we just kind of watched it.

00:33:31
Speaker 18: It was fun.

00:33:32
Speaker 11: He was, Yeah, Dion, could you know Dian was in the middle of entertaining and you talk my entertainment.

00:33:37
Speaker 3: There you go, yeah, that there he is.

00:33:40
Speaker 11: He was that good that he could be great and entertain the whole way. That's not easy to do because you can do it from corner. You can do it from corner because it's a hard job physically, but you know, it's not like, you know, you have to anticipatory throwing at twenty two guys running around like it's it's a different game. So and that way you could you could say, you know what, I'm gonna be great and I'm gonna make you, you know, laugh, or entertain or make you whatever.

00:34:04
Speaker 2: You know.

00:34:04
Speaker 18: I think you could do it from there.

00:34:05
Speaker 3: But he had been a Hall of Fame receiver if he just played, oh yeah.

00:34:10
Speaker 11: Oh yeah, for sure, no question. He kept in when when I was with him that one year, went to Super Bowl. He kept going over there and I said, look, let's let's cool, let's cool, let's get some let's get some routes in the Super Bowl. We finally we threw it late in the game. We did something. Just we owed him to him because he did so much work on the offense. He was like he did a lot of prep work to be useful if needed, you know what I mean.

00:34:32
Speaker 18: And uh, I love that because I was like, the idea.

00:34:35
Speaker 11: Was just He's like, he's just throw it, don't worry, just shop back and just rip it and then I'll take care of the rest. I believed him, man, I believe it is possible. The dude was he you know, dad, he was one of the rare guys that defied your eye. You know, as a as a player, you're talking about keen sense of physical abilities.

00:34:58
Speaker 18: You had to know what a owner.

00:35:00
Speaker 11: Could do and how fast they could break, and how just a minute nature of how people moved and and you got a sense of it, like a heightened sense of it, so you knew exactly what was happened on the field and who could do what, and there's a timing to it. And then Dion was different like he would he would shock you. You're like, wait, you're not you can't move that way. There's not it's not possible. There was a time when he was with Atlanta early on, I was like, I'm just not going over there because I can't got I can't gauge it. It was like something you couldn't I couldn't give a handle on it because it was his speed was so incredible.

00:35:32
Speaker 18: I was like, I can't. I'm gonna touch you for a little while.

00:35:35
Speaker 2: Its thanks for sharing. Great to talk to you again. Thank you, Steve the Man, all rybody, that's Steve Young, Hall of Famer. You imagine you're telling Bill Walsh or George Seaffert, can we not go towards.

00:35:51
Speaker 3: Dion sign please?

00:35:55
Speaker 2: Meanwhile, he's got, you know, all these great weapons on his side of the ball.

00:35:58
Speaker 3: Let's stay away from Dion, all right? Last call for phone calls? What we learn? What's in store tomorrow? Right after this?

00:36:03
Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live. Last call for phone calls?

00:36:16
Speaker 3: What we learned? What's in store tomorrow?

00:36:20
Speaker 2: Do we dare write the headline today for tonight's game? Tomorrow's headline? I think you guys probably don't have time to prepare. Todd probably is able to do that. You could do a headline.

00:36:35
Speaker 4: I could something along the lines of less than Ferocious Ron Raven's tame Lions.

00:36:40
Speaker 3: Okay, maybe take a little more time.

00:36:45
Speaker 10: Detroit is good. Those guys are lying.

00:36:49
Speaker 3: Once again. We probably needed Vet a little bit more.

00:36:53
Speaker 5: Three one see I told you the lines were no good.

00:36:56
Speaker 8: Three one c nothing.

00:37:00
Speaker 3: Okay, Marvin, you have a quick NFL game.

00:37:04
Speaker 10: To take the Ravens back across eight mile of that one.

00:37:07
Speaker 7: There you go.

00:37:09
Speaker 5: Work together, See we work.

00:37:10
Speaker 2: You know what my fault? I never should have done this. Okay, Marvin, your quick NFL game?

00:37:15
Speaker 8: Yes? My game is I guess the quarterback that Deon Sanders has the most interceptions off of Steve Young, He's second?

00:37:24
Speaker 19: Oh, Todd, Joe Fisman, No, Joe Montana No, not a Hall of Famer NFC god though, correct.

00:37:44
Speaker 9: Yeah, Paul Jim Effert of the Rams.

00:37:51
Speaker 2: Okay, don't call me Chris, Jim Everett, produce Jim Effert, Yes, Marvin.

00:37:57
Speaker 8: In third place, it was Troy Akerman and Drew Blair. So Carrie Collins, Brett Farv Okay, Rodney Pete, Dan Marino right, terrible.

00:38:08
Speaker 2: Guess Pat in Connecticut? Hi, Pat, what's on your mind today?

00:38:12
Speaker 7: Hey?

00:38:12
Speaker 14: DP, thanks for taking my call. Hey, real quick about the tush push. I was a high school coach here in Connecticut for over twenty years, and we ran a play that was that was very similar to the tush push a few differences. The big difference was the fullback would actually carry the ball and instead of assisting the runner, the wings would fold in and push on the backs of the guards, which would kind of create that scrum. And it may look kind of archaic and stone age, but there's a lot of nuance to what those what those guys are doing up front. It takes a long time to become proficient at it, and once we finally did, it kind of became a calling card for you know, for our guys and our program, and something we were comfortable running just about any down let alone, you know. Fourth and one. Having said that it is remarkably difficult to officiate in pre game meetings with the officials, I would these guys through it and tell them to be patient with the whistle, that there would be times where that back would actually keep his feet and amidst all of the chaos going on in that pile and be able to break it. And two three, four times a year the full back would be twenty yards downfield and an official didn't see him and what's.

00:39:18
Speaker 11: Blow with that?

00:39:20
Speaker 3: Thank you? Pat uh Brian in Texas, I Brian, Hey.

00:39:26
Speaker 20: DF have me go on good hey, just to piggyback off that. I hate the fish push. And I don't understand how an offensive lineman can put their head down and lead with their head and go into the head of a defense. I mean, you see what I mean here? It looks like two rams button head with ach other.

00:39:45
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:39:45
Speaker 20: And if the NFL solo caught up on CTE, maybe you know the injury report or risks are not realized until years later.

00:39:54
Speaker 3: I just don't And thanks for the phone call. I don't know why.

00:39:57
Speaker 2: If it was two thousand and five that the only all of a sudden said you can assist a runner from behind, I got I don't know why, Like, what was the call for it? Yeah, Paulie.

00:40:08
Speaker 6: The only thing I could find was a New York Times article saying it was happening a lot in football already, that there the linemen were pushing the running back and it was hard for the referees to adjudicate.

00:40:19
Speaker 9: That was the quote they used.

00:40:20
Speaker 3: Why is it difficult to rule on?

00:40:23
Speaker 6: And then the irony is that they let it go and now they're gonna get rid of it because it's tough to adjudicate.

00:40:32
Speaker 2: It would help if they started with off sides, just just you can officiate that. The other part of it, I understand, very challenging. Seatan, findal results of pole question?

00:40:46
Speaker 10: Yep, we got two of them up there right now.

00:40:48
Speaker 3: Okay, loss, that's gonna haunt you.

00:40:54
Speaker 10: Right now, the Packers Browns game has about forty one percent of that vote that's been staying steady. Win of the weekend switched a couple of times right now, Indiana and the lead with forty three percent of the vote, and then a tie for second between Syracuse and the Bears.

00:41:08
Speaker 3: Better team the Colts or the Hoosiers.

00:41:13
Speaker 10: With Daniel diming all over the place.

00:41:15
Speaker 3: Are you kidding me? Yeah, Pauline, the.

00:41:17
Speaker 6: Only thing they could ruin a Hoosiers weekend is Indiana becoming a football school.

00:41:21
Speaker 3: Yeah. What did you learn?

00:41:24
Speaker 4: Todd Lewis reddicks all in on the charges and feels it's time for the Giants to bench Russ for Jackson?

00:41:29
Speaker 10: Dark, Seatan, would you learn somewhere between three to five people could have made that scene?

00:41:33
Speaker 3: Throw just in her.

00:41:34
Speaker 8: Garvin Lawyer's new book is not about the NFL.

00:41:37
Speaker 9: I'm clearly not overrecting.

00:41:39
Speaker 2: Have a great day, everybody. Thanks for your contributions, as always for the talented Fritzy Seatan, Marv, Paula yours truly have a great day, look forward to trying to entertain you tomorrow
