Episode 178 Helping Our Children Have A Successful School Year with Lisa Chase
Lisa Chase is a 33-year veteran in education. She has served as a team leader and advisor to her school’s community service club and talent show, as well as a cheerleading coach. Lisa loves her family, her students, cooking, and the Buffalo Bills!
Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Lisa Chase about how to help our kids to have a successful school year.
Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
- Organization is key! Have everything in its place and make sure your kid is on board and learn to take ownership of how things are done.
- Don’t assume your kid knows what needs to be done, until they have established a routine. Ask questions that will clue them in to thinking about whether or not something is done or needs to be done.
- Communication with your child’s teacher is a valuable tool for both the parent and the student.
- Establish the expectation that you will check to see your child’s work is done, until they prove that they don’t need supervision.
- Check in with your kid! How are they socially and emotionally?
- Keep offering support and security to your child.
- Take time to stop and listen when your child communicates with you.
- Do you have a “difficult” child? Lisa says they are often her favorite students. Encourage that connection between child and teacher to help your child feel better understood.
- Anxiety in our kids is different these days. Technology, phones, social media, etc. all contribute to overload in our kids. Make sure they have downtime with the family.
- Social skills have been affected after the pandemic. How do we encourage our kids to become more social? Encourage in-person interaction.
- Teach your child how to solve conflicts. Try role playing. Keep practicing social skills with your kids, no matter how old they are.
- Balance unplugged activities with you learning more about what they do online.
- Tips on improving your communication with the school
