WHY'D THEY WEAR THAT?

In this episode of Why’d They Wear That?, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly revisit Tootsie and break down the film’s fashion one look at a time. From Dorothy Michaels’ endless high neck blouses and flowing skirts to Teri Garr’s unexpectedly chic wardrobe and Jessica Lange’s soft, effortless glamour, they dig into what works, what does not, and why the movie’s costume montage changes everything.

Along the way, they talk silhouettes, styling tricks, 1980s fashion logic, and the costume choices that helped define one of the most iconic movie transformations of its era.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a pretty good job with the package, but I feel like he could have done a better topic.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, this is why he's wearing the flowing A-line skirt.
[SPEAKER_02]: You're okay, wear a band.
[SPEAKER_02]: Not this, it's a band.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a band, it's a band.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not your assets, you're caught.
[SPEAKER_02]: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, everybody.
[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to why they wear that.
[SPEAKER_02]: She's Stacy London and he's Clinton Kelly and we've known each other for 20 something years at this point at this point 20 blah blah blah blah right and despite room is to the contrary.
[SPEAKER_02]: We actually love each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: We really do
[SPEAKER_00]: Despite all those rumors to the contrary.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so what we're doing with this show is we are watching movies and sometimes television shows Mostly for the second time with an eye toward for the stream to say 57 159 especially in the case of today's show.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think I've probably seen this at least it doesn't times.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, and Lee at least it doesn't
[SPEAKER_02]: We can also be as snarky as we want.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because they're just characters.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're not real people.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we're watching them and we love it.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we love for you to watch along with us.
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's get started with... Tutsy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Tutsy.
[SPEAKER_01]: And 10 bucks.
[SPEAKER_02]: Tutsy came out in 1982.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is, so we were in middle school.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: The director, Sydney Pollock, and the costumes were by Ruth Morley, who also did Ghost, by the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: So Ruth had a big good all-time in the 80s for real, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so just say you know Tutsi is about a struggling actor named Michael Dorsey played by Dustin Hoffman.
[SPEAKER_02]: He can't get work because nobody likes him So he basically reinvents himself and no, it's not because nobody likes him It's because he's just so type A and so personicity He's he's he's right.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's he's his process That's exactly how you describe it when you have to say he has a process.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and it's an exhausting process.
[SPEAKER_02]: So he reinvents himself as a woman.
[SPEAKER_00]: Dorothy Michael.
[SPEAKER_02]: Dorothy Michael.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's number one.
[SPEAKER_02]: And the beginning of the movie, we see him having a party.
[SPEAKER_02]: And so you have a lot of like New York out-of-work actor types, including Michael and his friend, who's probably one of his best friends, Sandy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: She's played by the beautiful fabulous hilarious Terry Gar.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Terry Garret in this movie is, she's luminescent.
[SPEAKER_02]: She is luminescent, and in this scene, Michael is teaching Sandy, sort of, he's giving her some acting tips.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I just thought we should pause on Sandy's look right here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at this.
[SPEAKER_02]: At 1320.
[SPEAKER_00]: This dress, this sleeve, it's a black eyelet with some sort of white underlay, is so beautiful.
[SPEAKER_02]: Puffy, sleeve, high neck.
[SPEAKER_02]: It looks like it might have a Peter Pan collar contrast, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, with the belt, is that well-built, exactly.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then at her neck, she is wearing a loose sight heart-shaped brooch with a toggle that looks like that's holding it into place.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's red.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's a magnet.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, could be.
[SPEAKER_02]: So she's doing this really chic, she stands out with what the costume designer is doing here, Ruth Morley, is like she's standing out amongst all of these out-of-work actors as being like the chic quirky one.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because all the rest of them were just wearing T-shirt.
[SPEAKER_00]: T-shirt, same head of yours.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm looking at him.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's just wearing like an open sort of un-ironed button front shirt.
[SPEAKER_01]: Look number two.
[SPEAKER_02]: So he dresses up as a woman and desperation to get a job and to show people like just how good of an actor he is.
[SPEAKER_02]: And this is his first, well, drag look.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: And here here is Dorothy Michaels now.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's easily pussy bow blouse.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the 80s and the pussy bow blouses.
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't even.
[SPEAKER_00]: with those A-line skirts that were too tight in the waist that really kind of poofed and then made a really unpleasant bold around the midsection.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and the A-line MIDI too as well.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like it's really not that flattering.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, what it has all those waves to it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when it has all the stitching and pleating and things like that, it just, it did not age well.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now I understand why he is wearing and why the costume designer put him slash her into this style blouse because you've got to conceal the Adam's apple and maybe the fact that he didn't shave his neck all the way exactly.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we see a lot of really high necklines on Dorothy Michaels and long sleeves.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, look, I'm gonna say something here that might turn the little controversial.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Dorothy Michaels and Judy Burnley could have shared a more drip.
[SPEAKER_02]: 100% Judy Burnley from nine to five.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: 100%.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think you see a Judy could wear that top.
[SPEAKER_02]: She could wear that.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that she'd look a little sheaker in it for some reason.
[SPEAKER_00]: And actually, I think Dorothy would look great in a little light pink sweater with a little light pink sweater scarf.
[SPEAKER_02]: Agreed.
[SPEAKER_02]: But we see Dorothy Michaels wear this silhouette on dread times in this movie.
[SPEAKER_02]: Look number three.
[SPEAKER_02]: Needless to say, he gets the job.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, as Dorothy has.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because he's unattractive enough.
[SPEAKER_01]: I did encourage you to attract him to even audition if he gets the part.
[SPEAKER_02]: Totally.
[SPEAKER_02]: So then, one of his co-workers is Jessica Lane.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh.
[SPEAKER_02]: His her character's name is Julie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Julie, I had an insane crush on Julie and I thought I was straight.
[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to be her when I grew up.
[SPEAKER_02]: I had an insane crush on her.
[SPEAKER_02]: How could you not?
[SPEAKER_02]: She's one of those exquisite beauties again.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's nothing wrong with that face.
[SPEAKER_02]: She's just, she won the genetic lottery.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: More power too.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she's great in this role.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's a great actress.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, Michael Dorsey gets invited by Julie to go to her apartment, okay?
[SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't know what to wear, so there's this great scene where he's talking to, it's the scene is so good, I hope you remember.
[SPEAKER_00]: I actually think it's so funny because I feel like if I asked you to help me, like getress for date or something, this is exactly the conversation that you and I would have.
[SPEAKER_02]: I totally would have gotten on like this.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I imagine the Clinton is Bill Murray and that I am in fact Dorothy Michaels.
[SPEAKER_02]: Bill Murray is the roommate and best friend trying to help him get dressed, okay?
[SPEAKER_02]: So he says, what do you mean you don't have a thing to wear?
[SPEAKER_00]: She's seen me in all these things.
[SPEAKER_02]: Can't you wear the white one?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I can't wear white to a casual dinner.
[SPEAKER_00]: You cannot.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is too dressy.
[SPEAKER_02]: Couldn't you wear pants?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, no pants.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because you have too much of an ass.
[SPEAKER_02]: What about this thing?
[SPEAKER_00]: I just have to write shoes for it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Those horizontal lines make me look hippy and it cuts me across the bust.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're getting into a weird area here.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's such a good seat.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's such a one not to wear a seat.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, so let's just break down this advice.
[SPEAKER_02]: Can you wear white to a casual dinner?
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, of course.
[SPEAKER_02]: Although that is that dress.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now that I'm seeing it hanging in its entirety, it's a lot for a casual dinner.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look, it's nothing you can't wear white.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's that you can't wear that to a casual dinner.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's really the problem.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can't wear a cow on that, like, you know, shoulder bed and tent dress.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can't wear that to dinner period.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like there's nothing you can eat.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that would work with that.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's it's clear.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a drinking lot.
[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_02]: The advice, well, not the advice.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, he's like, I can't wear pants because he has his butt.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then he's eating cottage.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's another scene.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I love cottage cheese.
[SPEAKER_01]: I always have to be a diet thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: Back.
[SPEAKER_02]: The horizontal stripes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: Make it look too heavy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, I'm not going to argue with him there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And also, you know, he's kind of pretty.
[SPEAKER_00]: a good job with the hose with the package, but I feel like you could have done a better talk.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, such a better talk.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can still see the outline of the wiener there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you kind of feel like, like, wouldn't, like, that's like drag queen 101.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you tuck it between the legs, but that's, I mean, all day, that's a lot of work.
[SPEAKER_00]: All day, that's a lot of work, but what, I mean, this is, this is what we get instead.
[SPEAKER_02]: And this is why he's wearing the flowing, A-line skirt.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's okay, wear a band, not this.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a band, it's a band, it's a band.
[SPEAKER_02]: You're like, oh, it's not your assets, you're kind of.
[SPEAKER_02]: Look number four.
[SPEAKER_02]: Darthing Michael's becomes America's sweetheart.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now here is the thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is my theory and I have not checked this out with anybody.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that.
[SPEAKER_02]: The wardrobe in this movie is pretty safe and a little bit boring.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I think what they decided at some point was, we need a costume montage for the ages.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: So the montage that happens next at 5726, okay?
[SPEAKER_02]: It is the 80s montage of all 80s montages.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we're gonna hold for each fucking shot here because they are so good.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so this long cocktail dress, it's black and long sleeve divided with a gold man-made turtleneck.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I thought it was beaded, but regardless, I'm like, what are you doing in those glasses?
[SPEAKER_02]: I know, he never picked the glasses.
[SPEAKER_00]: He never did.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're her signature look.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's a signature look, but with the fur and the gold, you, that frame does not feel fancy to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: And really, you think that's the cover of House of Halson first of all, they would never leave that much head space.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, they would never, also that tan background they would never do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Never, and I'm sorry, is the picture blurry?
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, she's in a Lea Tard.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is Capizio.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like a Tard to the Mac.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm obsessed with the rap.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's also giving a little, you know, who I'm going to say, Cassie from a chorus line.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: I should have thought of that immediately.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my God.
[SPEAKER_00]: Where did my head go?
[SPEAKER_02]: Cassie, well, Cassie wore it.
[SPEAKER_02]: They had the red dress.
[SPEAKER_02]: I know.
[SPEAKER_02]: Of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why my brain didn't go there.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm shocked because we're both obsessed with the chorus line.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was thinking, I skating for some reason.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's very ice skating.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Next up, Women's Day.
[SPEAKER_00]: We wouldn't say, of course, they went Southern.
[SPEAKER_02]: What?
[SPEAKER_02]: What?
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: You have.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: I do love this purple suede fringe vest that she's wearing over her denim jacket.
[SPEAKER_00]: Could you say that one more time?
[SPEAKER_02]: I do love her purple suede fringe vest that she's wearing over her denim shirt or denim jacket.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that part.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
[SPEAKER_00]: You hate purple.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you love the purple vest?
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I don't like it on me.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I think let's go her.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's for other people.
[SPEAKER_02]: Good for other people.
[SPEAKER_02]: One man's day 69 cents.
[SPEAKER_02]: Did you see that?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then this look, I can't fucking deal with it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't even.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't.
[SPEAKER_00]: What?
[SPEAKER_00]: Bell truck is that?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a belt.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's wearing a hair and pant.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she's got a huge loose sight bracelet on one.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is that?
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, oh, it says looks into the future.
[SPEAKER_00]: She has to start the Michael.
[SPEAKER_02]: She's holding a crystal ball.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, oh.
[SPEAKER_02]: On the left hand side, it's a crystal ball, but in the middle, it looks like a ball.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, that is about with it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It almost looks like old Donna Karen.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, right, I forgot about those belts.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and look, they have over here on the right hand side.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look a beauty shot still in those, or the fetic glasses.
[SPEAKER_02]: So this, this outfit drives me crazy and like, and then I, it makes me feel funny inside.
[SPEAKER_00]: It does.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's a little weird.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, I just wonder how big
[SPEAKER_00]: Dustin Hoffman's feet and he looks like he has very small feet.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's I think he's a small man He's a very small man now TV guide with jeans salad.
[SPEAKER_00]: So do you ask for anything better than this?
[SPEAKER_00]: No No, I love the datement pendant.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah That's the only thing that shows up on that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the only thing that's it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and then look who's look who makes a cameo Hi Andy Warhol.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: This dress that she's wearing here is just a red sack
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you I feel like this is a copy of the white dress in her closet that she doesn't wear because it's not casual.
[SPEAKER_00]: 100%.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, she looks like Dame ended there a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very sacky.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then here we go with the, they will, I hear I am using the word iconic again, but the iconic tootsie shot where she is wearing a full length, fully sequined mock neck red sequined dress.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, long sleep.
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't get better than this.
[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't get better.
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't get better.
[SPEAKER_00]: And also, I don't know what they did.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: They definitely, like, took in the waist or they pinned it or did something behind it when they did it from the back because you can see, it just fits her, it fits her.
[SPEAKER_00]: It fits Dorothy Michaels, much better.
[SPEAKER_02]: Much better.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's one of the tricks of being a stylist.
[SPEAKER_02]: And now let's talk about this montage.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: So for this, anytime you work at a magazine and you have your photo taken for a magazine, the stylist from the magazine or the ones who dress you.
[SPEAKER_02]: that was me.
[SPEAKER_02]: So my guess my big question is, how did Dorothy Michaels get through all of these photoshoots without anyone noticing she had a dick?
[SPEAKER_02]: How did she happen?
[SPEAKER_00]: Had to have done a better took?
[SPEAKER_02]: She had to have for the photo again.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she probably did her own makeup.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, she says early in the show that she's got to do her next.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's got to do her own makeup.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, now she's got an allergy.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: So anyway, I just think that that montage makes this whole movie's fashion work because otherwise it's very forgettable.
[SPEAKER_02]: Just saying, you know what?
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: If we could find out whether or not because that's a very smart, like cinematic device, it really moves.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it can montage is just in general just for a second.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to get nerd out here.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it can like be a time, it can be like activity, it can be like it's always forward movement to move something along faster.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like isn't it baby boom too, there's a montage?
[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't seen that in a while.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm pretty sure, anyway, it's a montage of like, you know, then making more baby food, more baby food, more baby food until she gets to have this like empire.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because right, like we don't want to watch seven photo shoots.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, nobody wants to watch photo seven shoots, but now we know that she's become America's sweetheart and it's the plot line along and we got cooler outfits to watch.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think Amanta has a lot of use value in movies.
[SPEAKER_02]: Totally agree with you.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's definitely where it's at the halfway point of the movie.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like the literal halfway point of the movie and it gives you that jolt of energy that you might have needed.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's a device that some people might take issue with, but I think it totally works here.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was a device that was really popular in the 80s, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: look number five.
[SPEAKER_02]: So now we hear we are in Julie's apartment.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: And she remember she works on the soap opera.
[SPEAKER_02]: She's the star of the soap opera.
[SPEAKER_02]: She plays in nurse and she's dating Dabney Coleman.
[SPEAKER_02]: The director and Michael Dorsey as Dorothy Michael is in love with Julie.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I stopped here because I know you love this outfit.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not so much the top.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, looking at it now, I don't feel like it fits as well as it could.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, there's something a little off about the collar size, but the pants.
[SPEAKER_00]: I really love these trousers.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love these pleated trousers.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the rose color.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know whether it's that she matches with the set.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am unclear what happened.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is what they do.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the costume designer had a meeting with the set, or they didn't, and this is what happened.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is a quinkening?
[SPEAKER_00]: Do people dress in the same colors as their interior, just so I am like, where does that come from?
[SPEAKER_02]: Hold it for a photo shoot in the house, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe she was thinking about a photo shoot later in the day.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, but, you know, I know that even accused me of turning things into a humble brags, but one time I did do a photo shoot in my kitchen, and, uh, for...
[SPEAKER_02]: for HDT.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did Jessica Leng come to you?
[SPEAKER_02]: Jessica Leng was not there.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was for HDTV magazine, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I did my countertops and pink.
[SPEAKER_02]: I did pink countertops in my Miami apartment.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't have it anymore, still on it.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was very chic.
[SPEAKER_02]: And for the photo shoot, I wore a light pink shirt.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God, you slut, you horror.
[SPEAKER_02]: They were shorts.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think I were like stone.
[SPEAKER_02]: My shorts days are over.
[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, my shorts days, I don't even look at myself alone in underwear.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look number six.
[SPEAKER_02]: Sandy played by Terry guard is in love with Michael because he slept with her only to avoid having to explain why he's trying on her clothes yes so she comes over to his apartment she crashes his apartment and here she is wearing I know you love this outfit
[SPEAKER_02]: So great, this is at 134, one hour, 30 from it's 17 seconds.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this red blazer looks vintage to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Looks a little fortiesing.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, okay, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: We have suggested this outfit literally 300 times I want not to wear.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, more.
[SPEAKER_00]: More than that.
[SPEAKER_00]: At least 385 to 400.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, this would be the outfit where we're like, you do a dark wash. She made him rise.
[SPEAKER_02]: This probably high rise in me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, and you do, right, because more high rise, you know, something that to find to erase, we love a third layer, holy trinity.
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then a printed house with some visual interest.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: And structure jacket.
[SPEAKER_00]: Pointy toes, too.
[SPEAKER_02]: So she's literally, she has gone into the future, watch some episodes of what not to wear.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm very driven, transported back to 1980.
[SPEAKER_02]: And came back in time.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I will say, I think it works.
[SPEAKER_02]: When she takes off this jacket, look how beautiful this blouses.
[SPEAKER_02]: We want to gong go over this blouse on a whatnot to wear
[SPEAKER_00]: absolutely.
[SPEAKER_00]: We probably would have argued whether we're going to put out the mannequin or save it for the quiet.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, we have been those problems.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, we have these meetings.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we have these meetings where it's like, all right, we got to dress the mannequins.
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and we're like, let's put it, let's put the mannequins.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is so great.
[SPEAKER_00]: What if it looks good on her?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to look at her.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's in her size.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll keep it in her size.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's save it for her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, but let's just give a little moment to this print because it's it's literally it's a Hawaiian print of a lay L-E-I And some of those beautiful Hawaiian flowers that I forgot the name of both.
[SPEAKER_02]: They put them in your my time with the Holly Colony Hi biscuits could be little I think you can eat them Oh, hi biscuits.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can eat two of them.
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe they're her biscuits.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, I
[SPEAKER_00]: That was the long way round.
[SPEAKER_02]: That was the long way round.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so I just wanted to give props to Sandy's outfit here.
[SPEAKER_02]: And the famous quote at one hour, 36 minutes and 45 seconds.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
[SPEAKER_02]: And now just to preface this, I have re-quoted this maybe 5,000 times in my life.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's not pretend we're something else.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're not going to lose everything we have.
[SPEAKER_00]: I did her said, I love you.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love you.
[SPEAKER_00]: I read the second text.
[SPEAKER_00]: I read this into real complex.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm responsible for my own overgasm.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care.
[SPEAKER_02]: but it's the I'm responsible for my own orgasms.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's where I was going.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yes, I'm responsible for all our responses for our orgasms.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't wait for somebody else to give you one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they can give you one.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's fine, but it's not.
[SPEAKER_00]: You take it.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can take it, but it's not over until you're done.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, that's what I would like to say.
[SPEAKER_02]: I would like to tell my female friends.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not over that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not over till you're done.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you didn't eat, that's a sex advice you're giving to women.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am so impressed.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you've done in three minutes, fuck it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fuck him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: You've got work to do, buddy.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Look number seven.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now at this point, his whole life is coming apart because it's kind of great because Julie's father's in love with him and he's in love with Julie and Gina Davis there just just looking fabulous fabulous she has such a small part in this movie at one point she's in her brown panties I didn't want to freeze on that because it felt a little exploiting seemed.
[SPEAKER_02]: But she looks amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: She really does look amazing and this was way before Thelma and Louise.
[SPEAKER_00]: She hadn't even come into that big.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is like her first role.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so this is just talk about this.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is the final drag outfit that we see.
[SPEAKER_02]: Dorothy Michaels and playing Emily Kimberly, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: And at this point I have to say this is where I am.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so fucking sick of the silhouette at this point.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so glad that he's coming out of his costume because it's like I can't take one more high neck ruffle blasts.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, and that floral slash ribbon corsage.
[SPEAKER_02]: Good, of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: Noted Pearl situation is so distracting.
[SPEAKER_02]: so distracting and did you notice that hillock she matches the set again oh i do love the leather sach belt don't you i do if it's leather i love it it's leather i think i'm pretty sure it's leather
[SPEAKER_02]: And then he's gonna rip off the wig.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna rip off the wig.
[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't know where he's going with the story.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so we're gonna off come up on from the lashes.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not, I'm not.
[SPEAKER_02]: And America goes curry.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, oh.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll be I'll be alright.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that is one of the most amazing reveals in Hollywood ever as far as I'm concerned with your career.
[SPEAKER_00]: It really was, I completely agree.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just awestruck by it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I just, let's just look at Jessica Lang for one second.
[SPEAKER_02]: What's with the flared Alipin?
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't like it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but what's with the, what's with the more a fabric that's like, it's really, she looks like she, that's like countable street.
[SPEAKER_02]: Look, number eight.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because he's in love with Jessica Lang, slash Julie, he's going to look for her on the streets after she's done with work, after she's signing autographs.
[SPEAKER_02]: And this is her final look.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is their final scene.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I got a lot to say about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure you do.
[SPEAKER_02]: OK, tell me, you love this way, James.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love her sweet jacket.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not my personal style, the truth.
[SPEAKER_00]: That she's wearing.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like this was very, very popular in the early 80s.
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a store called Puda Mayo.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you remember on the upper west side, that skirt is sort of reminiscing of everything that they did.
[SPEAKER_00]: That suede reminds me of early Ralph Lauren.
[SPEAKER_00]: So there are vibes here for me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's reminiscent of things that I remember being like, I remember what that suede feels like exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's a butter suede.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's something about this look that I find so loose and yet put together in the same way.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is the shake you mean.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, effortlessly she but also just that the volume in the sleeve the fact that you can push it up roll it up that high the fact that Like she's got a cinch twice, but not a smash twist like it's all a little bit softer.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and I love the way that her pendant is filling the negative On the hole at the neckline.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well done.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, oversized back to the slouchy oversized back
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, the only issue I have with the last couple of lines of dialogue in this movie, which piss me off.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's just play them.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: He apologizes to her.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he's saying that maybe they can make it work together.
[SPEAKER_02]: She's sort of giving him, like, she, I mean, he's got a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: What he says, we're already friends.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but he's got a lot to fucking apologize for.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's deceit her so hard.
[SPEAKER_02]: He has deceit.
[SPEAKER_02]: I have been deceit.
[SPEAKER_02]: The last thing she says to him in this movie is will you loan me the little yellow outfit?
[SPEAKER_02]: And then he says which one?
[SPEAKER_02]: And she says the Halston.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's been no fucking Halston yellow outfit in this movie.
[SPEAKER_02]: What the hell dare you?
[SPEAKER_02]: How dare you do that to us?
[SPEAKER_00]: Now my question is, did he get an original Halston more from the 70s like on clear in somewhere?
[SPEAKER_00]: Or is this the license Halston in which we don't care about seeing that little yellow number at all, do we?
[SPEAKER_02]: Stay still, London.
[SPEAKER_02]: Either way, you can't tease me with a yellow Halston and not show me a yellow Halston.
[SPEAKER_00]: But what's even more upsetting to me is he says, no, you're ruin it because you spill white on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're fucking alcohol.
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels real wide, I'm like, on my yellow halston, which may or may not be a halston to begin with.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, you're so caught up on whether it's a license.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, in 1882, I think it was a license, you know, I don't think the halston label was very much at the time.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, I can't believe we're not sharing the same rage here.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm glad we have rage together.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's my favorite kind of rage, but...
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't show us to yellow all-stint.
[SPEAKER_02]: Then I was like, did I miss the yellow all-stint?
[SPEAKER_02]: So I started going, I went back and it's yellow all-stint.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe they gave her that.
[SPEAKER_02]: All-stint never did any shit like that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hygniac ruffle blouse.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going there.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a lie.
[SPEAKER_02]: I have been deceived.
[SPEAKER_02]: End of story.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's the end of Tootsie.
[SPEAKER_00]: And why did they wear that?
[SPEAKER_02]: I, for costume design, I give this.
[SPEAKER_02]: I give this, oh, are we with the montage?
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, with the montage, because of the montage, I give this eight tuck dicks out of the...
[SPEAKER_00]: I think you were going to do a tuck, god damnit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do, okay, with the montage, because the montage really is the centerpiece, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: We have a couple of great Terry Garre outfits.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Terry really steals the show in terms of the outfits.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, I would say,
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll do nine printed lathe shirts.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, out of ten.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just for the film in general, I give it nine printed lathe.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, and same for the costume design, though?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, costume design, no, no, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: costume design.
[SPEAKER_02]: I give the movie itself.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to say 10 out of 10 tucked eggs.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like really 10 out of 10 tucked eggs that I'm going to say 10 out of 10 chest waxes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Chest waxes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, don't you think?
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you can't have hair as during the cycle.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he was, yeah, I skipped, just get the scene where he was totally in his underwear before he, before he fucks Sandy.
[SPEAKER_02]: And he is hair less.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hair less.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, he's taking the eyebrow.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to say hair removal.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: The hair removal premium package 10 out of 10.
[SPEAKER_02]: OK.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, thanks for watching.
[SPEAKER_02]: What?
[SPEAKER_02]: Might be a rare lie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for watching.
