<v Speaker 4>now because we just had the Winter Olympics and here
<v Speaker 4>the Simpsons are on their way to Vancouver to apparently
<v Speaker 4>represent Team USA in curling.
<v Speaker 1>I'm Dando and I'm Guy, and I was about to
<v Speaker 1>say this episode is now irrelevant because the Winter Olympics
<v Speaker 1>have been over for some time.
<v Speaker 4>But were they ever relevant? Shout out to all of
<v Speaker 4>our Winter Olympians out there.
<v Speaker 1>Australia actually did quite well. Australia above its weight in
<v Speaker 1>the Winter Olympics. Given that we are not regarded as
<v Speaker 1>a particularly wintery country.
<v Speaker 4>We were all surprised when on the news vers they
<v Speaker 4>were going we we did well.
<v Speaker 1>We actually did well.
<v Speaker 4>That was what we want something we did. Well, yeah,
<v Speaker 4>who was the guy that won that race where everyone
<v Speaker 4>else fell over? And he's Steve somewere Steve, I want to.
<v Speaker 1>Say, Steve Bradbury.
<v Speaker 4>That's the one. Yeah, what an absolute champion.
<v Speaker 1>But it's funny watching the televised Australian coverage of the
<v Speaker 1>of the Winter Olympics, it was like, and here's Steve Bradrey.
<v Speaker 1>Every four years they go and visit this guy or
<v Speaker 1>I think lives up northern Queensland. I think he owns
<v Speaker 1>are put up in Queensland, the least wintery place in Australia,
<v Speaker 1>which is the least wintery place in the world. Well
<v Speaker 1>not necessarily, but you know what I mean. And yeah,
<v Speaker 1>he's got himself a new head of hair and all
<v Speaker 1>this kind of stuff, and he's like speaking like a
<v Speaker 1>real authority. On the Winter Olympics, there was very much
<v Speaker 1>a thing was like he was kind of regarded as
<v Speaker 1>a lucky guy for everyone else in his race, kind
<v Speaker 1>of falling over. This speed skating event, goes through and
<v Speaker 1>wins a gold medals.
<v Speaker 4>He's not even like he doesn't feel bad about it either,
<v Speaker 4>But why should he He should not, because he is
<v Speaker 4>the thing.
<v Speaker 1>He's the thing that kept coming up both him and
<v Speaker 1>all his other fellow athletes were saying, what you're not
<v Speaker 1>seeing is the hours and hours and hours and years
<v Speaker 1>and weeks and months of effort that went into his
<v Speaker 1>training and his preparation and all that kind of stuff
<v Speaker 1>and really just came down to, you know, a bunch
<v Speaker 1>of people fall out. The other thing was, and this
<v Speaker 1>really sort of weirded me out about the Winter Olympics,
<v Speaker 1>but certainly when it came to speed skating and things
<v Speaker 1>like that, with people falling over as well, there's a
<v Speaker 1>chance that you will either nick yourself with your blades
<v Speaker 1>or someone else. I mean, there was some guy who
<v Speaker 1>actually really got his throat.
<v Speaker 4>Cut by skate have it in hockey a guy lost
<v Speaker 4>his life a couple of years ago, got slice on
<v Speaker 4>the neck, I believe. Yeah, it's scary.
<v Speaker 1>It looked pretty naily, yeah, I must admit. I mean
<v Speaker 1>I'm not a huge Olympics guy in general, but I
<v Speaker 1>kind of enjoyed watching these Winter Olympics. I mean, the
<v Speaker 1>sports are really sort of entertaining and fun. I saw
<v Speaker 1>none of them. Yeah, you know, doing the moguls, you
<v Speaker 1>gotta do a little flip in there as well, and.
<v Speaker 4>I'm with it. I always get really pumped for the
<v Speaker 4>actual Olympics as well the Summer Olympics, and then they're
<v Speaker 4>on and I just don't seem to watch as much
<v Speaker 4>as I think I'm going to, because it's like you
<v Speaker 4>watch any sport whenever you want live and I'm like, yeah,
<v Speaker 4>where's the Simpsons marathon? That's what That's what the Olympics
<v Speaker 4>meant for kids. I mean the Fox that were like, well,
<v Speaker 4>no one's gonna be watching anything but the Olympics. Let's
<v Speaker 4>just spike the Simpsons.
<v Speaker 1>So this particular episode sort of was the best of
<v Speaker 1>all worlds for you, and it was like, Okay, we
<v Speaker 1>get that Winter Olympics feeling, but also Simpsons.
<v Speaker 4>I remember. It's funny. I couldn't remember the name Steve Bradby,
<v Speaker 4>but as soon as you said it, I remember. I
<v Speaker 4>think it was like year eight when it happened for me.
<v Speaker 4>I was in year eight. I remember we made a song,
<v Speaker 4>wouldn't it be nice to be Steve watching everybody fall over?
<v Speaker 1>More power to him? He's got that gold.
<v Speaker 4>Yes, yes, indeed, apparently so margin Homer are good enough
<v Speaker 4>to represent America in Curly in this episode. I'm watching
<v Speaker 4>this going, I'm getting D two vibes My Ducks two
<v Speaker 4>because I watched this recently with the kids, and I
<v Speaker 4>love the My Ducks movies. No, nostalgia plays a big
<v Speaker 4>role in that. But I watched his going this bunch
<v Speaker 4>of riff raff representing team USA. How why they won
<v Speaker 4>a district league and now they're representing the country.
<v Speaker 1>What happens in D two? They've actually got sort of
<v Speaker 1>bumped up a notch too.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, they've gone from District five the money Ducks. They've
<v Speaker 4>got the changes off to the Ducks and like, you
<v Speaker 4>guys are good, we like your story. You can represent
<v Speaker 4>Team USA at the Summer Olympics whatever it is that
<v Speaker 4>junior summer.
<v Speaker 1>Is it revealed any stage throughout D two because I
<v Speaker 1>have not watched it, Okay, you should then the death
<v Speaker 1>Strewn I watched it. I go, this is absolute ludicrous.
<v Speaker 1>But at any stage is there some cynical person going, hey,
<v Speaker 1>you guys are really that good. But we liked your
<v Speaker 1>story and we knew we could sell it. Oh and that,

<v Speaker 4>The coach Bombay starts having a love affair with the
<v Speaker 4>co coach of the Iceland team, so that in the
<v Speaker 4>first one it was the Hawks, they were all black,
<v Speaker 4>and then then this one it's it's the Iceland team
<v Speaker 4>and it's a guy. None of them are actually from Iceland,
<v Speaker 4>and they're putting on funny accents. I think, actually, I
<v Speaker 4>think the female is an Icelandic actress, but everyone else
<v Speaker 4>is just an American together, mate, your eyes on the prize.
<v Speaker 4>He gets ahead of himself. He's like, I'm a success
<v Speaker 4>financially now, and he's more interested in the perks of
<v Speaker 4>being famous as opposed to coaching the team.

<v Speaker 1>a bit of a bit of a passenger.
<v Speaker 4>How are they representing the country? That's my throw logic

<v Speaker 4>point where this isn't funny. This is just she's a

<v Speaker 1>of nowhere, which is something you actually could have built on.

<v Speaker 4>It did just feel like, you know, the Winter Olympics
<v Speaker 4>are on, let's tie it in. That was the whole
<v Speaker 4>point of this.
<v Speaker 1>So you've got these two parallel storyline. Well actually, I
<v Speaker 1>mean yeah, I guess the A plot is is Homer
<v Speaker 1>and Marge at the Olympics, and the bat plot is
<v Speaker 1>Lisa getting addicted to Olympic pins.
<v Speaker 4>Like I said about that, I'm a better in saying
<v Speaker 4>that relatable. I look at the studio, I can I
<v Speaker 4>lie to just the idea of getting addicted to collecting
<v Speaker 4>ship and how easy it is because you see these
<v Speaker 4>things in the newspapers all the time. They go get
<v Speaker 4>this this day's or this month, so this week's pin
<v Speaker 4>or poster and stuff. As a kid, I was like,
<v Speaker 4>I've got to collect them all.
<v Speaker 1>Oh, look, you you're talking to someone who will spending
<v Speaker 1>far more time on eBay than he should or yeah,
<v Speaker 1>would have been buying blues yeah, blue rays. Yeah. Yeah,

<v Speaker 1>Olympic pins story and flesh out the relationship between see
<v Speaker 1>Moore and Agnes a bit more that storyline, or a
<v Speaker 1>bit more with margin Homer.
<v Speaker 4>So I was reading here on the wiki page that
<v Speaker 4>the original plan was for the Homer to be in
<v Speaker 4>a four man Bob sled team as a I guess
<v Speaker 4>a cool Runnings parody. I probably could have bought into
<v Speaker 4>that more than this, and it would have been confusing
<v Speaker 4>for You're doing a Winter Olympics episode the first ever
<v Speaker 4>time with the Winter Olympics, there was no couples or
<v Speaker 4>was no teamed curling event at the Olympics at that
<v Speaker 4>point in time.
<v Speaker 1>Oh okay, So they basically had to invent a sport
<v Speaker 1>or a variation on.
<v Speaker 4>A sport the writers artistic license because although curling is
<v Speaker 4>an Olympic sport, mixed doubles, which is featured in the episode,
<v Speaker 4>was not an Olympic event at the time.
<v Speaker 1>This airing.
<v Speaker 4>It did debut eight years later. However, in the episode,
<v Speaker 4>it explained that the event is being held as a
<v Speaker 4>demonstration sport. They do say that I was wondering why
<v Speaker 4>it's a demonstration sport again.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, so curling is just so odd to me. I'm
<v Speaker 1>trying to understand the physics of it and just sort
<v Speaker 1>of can't get my head around it. It's entertaining and
<v Speaker 1>it's like hell yeah, I mean, it's got a real
<v Speaker 1>curiosity about what is this? What are you guys doing.
<v Speaker 1>I'm sure the people who do curling take it very,
<v Speaker 1>very seriously, particularly in Canada, where they love it or
<v Speaker 1>I don't love it, but you know, it's certainly taken seriously.

<v Speaker 4>beds with posters of curlers well on the wadies box. Yeah,

<v Speaker 1>I don't know. I wanted to like this episode more
<v Speaker 1>than I did because the things that you're bringing up
<v Speaker 1>that you disliked about it. There certainly things that I
<v Speaker 1>disliked about it, and particularly yeah, I think I think
<v Speaker 1>the ag and stuff really just left a bad taste
<v Speaker 1>in my mouth.
<v Speaker 4>I think they built to the problem. The problem is

<v Speaker 4>March hourning it happened really near the end, and when
<v Speaker 4>the episode's over, you kind of go, did we even

<v Speaker 4>goes for like ninety seconds, the tension, and it's just like,

<v Speaker 4>I would might even need that because when they go
<v Speaker 4>we're having the forfeit ceremony and Marge goes not so fast.

<v Speaker 4>for like ninety seconds, you would forget that whole subplot

<v Speaker 1>good ideas in here. I mean, I don't dislike the
<v Speaker 1>notion of I mean, it's very far fetched about Agnes
<v Speaker 1>being a champion pole vaulter who whose dreams of Olympic
<v Speaker 1>glory were sort of quashed by Ah, yeah, I was
<v Speaker 1>pregnant and Seawa decides to kick one time and it
<v Speaker 1>knocks the bar of and oh I'd lose.
<v Speaker 4>We're going to discuss that scene as well.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. I like the foundation, I like the the the
<v Speaker 1>core of that idea. It's like, I could have been great,
<v Speaker 1>but now I've got this baby, and that's that's the
<v Speaker 1>origins of my disdain from my son. Yeah, yeah, which
<v Speaker 1>is like a running gag. Now, admittedly, you've got to
<v Speaker 1>revert to the status quo as we always talk about,
<v Speaker 1>you know, it's always got to be the way that
<v Speaker 1>Agne is going to be, like seem why are you suck?
<v Speaker 1>It's like, okay, we've got to get back back to
<v Speaker 1>that at the end.
<v Speaker 4>The problem is we've seen them have redemption stories where
<v Speaker 4>they've got where she's gone. I'm sorry, I know I've
<v Speaker 4>been too tough on you in the past, so when
<v Speaker 4>you go back to it's kind of like we've been
<v Speaker 4>here before, We've done this before.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I mean The best example of this kind of
<v Speaker 1>family dynamic, this kind of toxic family dynamic mother and
<v Speaker 1>son in particular, is in thirty Rock with Jack Donahan
<v Speaker 1>and Alibaman's character and his mum, who you know, she's
<v Speaker 1>constantly on his constantly yeah yeah, and she's and he's
<v Speaker 1>giving it back to her as well, and the moments
<v Speaker 1>when they do sort of bond, it's like, oh, you
<v Speaker 1>guys are similar enough. We can see that you actually
<v Speaker 1>do love each other. You know, the fact that you're
<v Speaker 1>so hateful makes you love each other, but occasionally you'll
<v Speaker 1>direct that hate at each other. With these two, I'm
<v Speaker 1>just I don't understand it, and I certainly don't understand
<v Speaker 1>of this.
<v Speaker 4>Episode with comedy, particularly when it comes to like, you know,
<v Speaker 4>someone being mean to another, if you're feeling sympathetic towards
<v Speaker 4>the other person, it's not funny anymore. No, And I
<v Speaker 4>was found myself feeling sympathetic towards Skinner this entire time,
<v Speaker 4>even making the jokes of you know, this unconscious reflex
<v Speaker 4>reflex in the in utero that was you know, inconceivable.
<v Speaker 4>It's like, no, it wasn't like it's sad that got
<v Speaker 4>yourself a breakman. Yeah, and I just it wasn't even
<v Speaker 4>coming across as a simp. He was just coming across
<v Speaker 4>as a victim of abuse. Essentially, wasn't here much and
<v Speaker 4>she had there was no justification for it, the way
<v Speaker 4>she was young at him all the time, and I
<v Speaker 4>was went and then at the end she just goes.
<v Speaker 4>I thought, when you fucked up at the end when
<v Speaker 4>the stick broke, and she's like, oh, I realized I
<v Speaker 4>love you now. I thought there was gonna be some
<v Speaker 4>sort of rug pull here, and now she's no, it's like, oh,
<v Speaker 4>I'm gonna take it for pizza and icegain. And I
<v Speaker 4>was like, when did this happen? We didn't even get
<v Speaker 4>like the the tease of her potentially changing her mind,
<v Speaker 4>seeing the error of her ways. It's just like on
<v Speaker 4>what she likes him now?
<v Speaker 1>Yeah? What So that didn't make a whole lot of sense. Yea,
<v Speaker 1>So yeah, when you've got this redemption moment at the end,
<v Speaker 1>so well you're not you think you're stick in the
<v Speaker 1>landing here you're not. And likewise almost with Homer as well.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, I would have liked the idea of these
<v Speaker 1>two working together all the way through. Maybe one's better
<v Speaker 1>than the other. As I pointed out earlier, you know,
<v Speaker 1>Marge is the real sort of the real driver here
<v Speaker 1>and Homer's doing his best, which it's probably it was
<v Speaker 1>one of my favorite moments. Oh he tries his best. Well,
<v Speaker 1>that's why he's never going to get any better. At
<v Speaker 1>the end, Homer didn't even really have to try. He
<v Speaker 1>was so good. No, I mean, it would have been
<v Speaker 1>nice for him to sort of like, oh, Marge's trying
<v Speaker 1>to say, I need to try more, I need to
<v Speaker 1>do it, give him a little bit of a win.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, I know this is mostly Marge's win, but
<v Speaker 1>it felt like, yeah, we always talk about say I
<v Speaker 1>think we bringd the Fraser example, it's like, stop treating
<v Speaker 1>this guy like a three legged dog, giving a little
<v Speaker 1>pet on the head for the for the effort or whatever.
<v Speaker 1>I felt that way about Homer in this. It's like
<v Speaker 1>you should be trying a bit harder. And you mentioned
<v Speaker 1>that as Quoe before.
<v Speaker 4>If I'm writing this episode right, and I could be wrong,
<v Speaker 4>but it all take is just one line. But you
<v Speaker 4>need to explain why margin Homer are retiring from the
<v Speaker 4>sport now because you watch this and you go they
<v Speaker 4>have just one gold at the Olympics. Why would they
<v Speaker 4>not continue to Why would hon't I go back to
<v Speaker 4>the power plan? Why would margin go back to being
<v Speaker 4>a house Why they're not international athlete superstars?
<v Speaker 1>Now that's right, Yeah, because they seem so into it.
<v Speaker 4>Explain why they're not going to be doing in the
<v Speaker 4>next episode. That's not just not just that they're good
<v Speaker 4>at it, they're best in the world. Yeah, but they're
<v Speaker 4>also yeah, really into it as well. They found something
<v Speaker 4>they like.
<v Speaker 1>Doing together, So why would they started doing inside jokes
<v Speaker 1>about curling and everything? Yeah, makes sense.
<v Speaker 4>Just just give us something. It can be illogical, but
<v Speaker 4>just something to justify why they wouldn't continue doing it,
<v Speaker 4>or even do one of.
<v Speaker 1>Those cheap Simpsons gags kind of like, yeah, I'm thinking

<v Speaker 4>Yeah, I would take anything. Yeah, yeah, I'll take a
<v Speaker 4>copy out over nothing. I did like though, that they
<v Speaker 4>didn't mock curly because I feel like a lot of
<v Speaker 4>people see curly as sort of like a joke sport.

<v Speaker 4>I know, I did for the longest time until I've
