Speaker 8: We as soon as we got back to the hotel, and our staff kind of has a semi tradition where if we have any big moments, we walk back from the arena to the hotel and that's just kind of our rat pack entourage moment. And we came to the hotel what we thought was a small get together with several hundred people, and it felt a little bit like prom where you're taking pictures and shaking hands and whatnot. But it was great just to see everyone under one roof.

Speaker 8: Well, Dan, I think once we have our roster put together for next year, I've been on the calls and the zooms already this morning. The transfer portal. Transfer portal opened again at twelve oh one last night, and we have some holes in our roster that we must fill and so credit our staff. They hold me accountable and they've had some stuff set up this morning. So we've been hitting the ground running.

Speaker 2: Were you working the transfer portal after winning the championship When you guys are celebrating, we.

Speaker 8: Actually contemplating doing a zoom at twelve oh one, shing how much media we were going to have and how many hours that would take. I think it was about two o'clock and I said, are we still doing a zoom? And the staff said no, that that ship passed and we just waited till this morning.

Speaker 2: Take me into halftime, got a small lead, but what is your message to your team?

Speaker 8: Our message was that things weren't going great. We weren't making shots. Yaxel was frustrated with us play, and we were at four points against a team that is conditioned to win, as any team that we faced in the last couple of years, and so we were optimistic that if we found a little bit of offensive rhythm, then we could find a way to at least tie or lose by no less than three the second twenty minutes.

Speaker 2: And I brought this up a couple of times yesterday that unless you've shot in a big arena and the depth perception, it's really hard to get acclimated to that. And this was one of the worst shooting percentages for a national title game we've had in a long, long time. How much of a role do you think it played that you're playing in you know, these cavernous stadiums.

Speaker 8: Now, Well, we shot the heck out of it on Saturday, so we felt good about preparation. I think it had work to do with with with Yukon's defense, the physicality game, and just two determined basketball teams that were fighting tooth and deal, just trying to figure out a way to win. And they did a great job of controlling the tempo of the game of forcing us to.

Speaker 7: Play at their pace, and they had us in a rock fight.

Speaker 2: Any added, I don't know what the word would be that you did it in Indianapolis after you know, being in Indiana under Bob Knight.

Speaker 8: Uh, Well, it's actually probably a little bit more distracting because we're trying to accommodate a lot more people because of proximity. But just as I've said repeally, it's just a full circle moment. As a young kid, my mom would bring me up to these clinics at the final four of the Yes Clinics, and these basketball clinics where the college coaches back then were actually working.

Speaker 7: Stations and teaching us how to shoot.

Speaker 8: And and trible the ball. When we're in elementary school. Things have changed a lot in that regard. And also in two thousand, a group of us managers came up here because we could we could commute, and just we're trying to network and meet any coach to make any connection that we could, to find a way to gain a spot in college basketball and literally any spot volunteer gas that those are the jobs we were looking for.

Speaker 2: He's a Dusty May Michigan had basketball coach. But you survived, Bob Knight and thrive, but you survived. But give me your your Bob Knight. We I mean, I had my moments with him, good and bad. I've been yelled at before by him, but I'm sure you have as well. So your favorite Bob Knight story as a student manager as what.

Speaker 8: There are some, Probably my favorite one now I could tell this because Coach has passed got rest of soul. Our job was so menial that his wife, Karen wanted to have more grass in their backyard at their house in Ellisville, and Coach Knight refused.

Speaker 8: And so Coach was on a fishing trip or recruiting trip, I can't remember now, and we got a call from Karen that a couple of us were subpoened out to the house and we had.

Speaker 7: No idea what for. And I don't know why. This story just came to me. I've never told it before.

Speaker 8: And we go out to the house and she had had several trees removed all the way down to the to the stump or to the ground, and we had to figure out a way to get the sawdust and any any residue from those trees out of the yard before Coach Night came home. So we literally had rakes and we were picking up sawdust with our bare hands so I wouldn't notice, hopefully wouldn't notice that any of his trees have been removed while I was on a on a hunting trip.

Speaker 8: This is no coach And I was ahead of his time and in many regards with analytics, with teaching pedagogy. But this was chack Cola before chock Cola, ur Yahoo. Uh had the soda taste with with a chocolate milk flavor, and uh it was it was ingenius.

Speaker 2: Take me back to last year when you're trying to put this team together and you're trying to do it with players all over the country. So give me, give me the recipe for that philosophy of what you were doing.

Speaker 8: Well, we take the job of Michigan and the first day I arrive on campus, there's maybe six six or seven guys in the locker room and and almost the entire team had already entered the transfer portal just because.

Speaker 8: And uh, my first call was to to coach Howard to find out who he felt like was worth investing in as we tried to build our program and continue the legacy of the past team.

Speaker 2: But you don't take it personally, Dusty, that you go in and you realize most of the team is in the transfer portal.

Speaker 8: No, not at all, not at all. I wanted to get to know those guys. I wanted them to get to know me. And even the players that we identify our guys that we would love to keep, we tell them, don't make any rash decisions. Just give us some time and let's get on the court together. Let's spend some time. Let's go have lunch. And because these college years are I mean a lot has been said about the portal and all this other stuff.

Speaker 7: That eighteen to twenty three, eighteen to.

Speaker 8: Twenty two are such informative years for any of this that have changed as much as I did at that stage. And so we just want to make sure it's the right fit at the right stage of their careers and their development, and so we never take a personal and so we decided to try to keep several of them, and finances we didn't have hardly any money. Finances wouldn't allow us to keep very many. And then luckily Vlad Golden chose to join us from FAU, and shortly thereafter we got Danny Wolf because of his family connections to Michigan and his desire to play at the highest level in preparation for the NBA coming from Yale. So we had a couple foundational pieces, a couple of returners from the previous Michigan group that had institutional knowledge, and from there we were able to build out and really set an identity and culture in year one.

Speaker 2: Is Michigan a football school or basketball school?

Speaker 8: It's an everything school, But I wish you're saying that the football is incredibly important at Michigan. There's one hundred and ten thousand people that gather on our campus every single Saturday to watch high level football, to celebrate everything that comes with the University of Michigan.

Speaker 8: Our first game at Michigan there's probably thirty five hundred people, and I can't remember the last played in front of a crowd that wasn't a sellout and they didn't bring great energy. So people love the university. They obviously appreciate a certain style of play as far as tenacity and and and teamwork and and so we're we're proud to be in a place where where they celebrate all sports.

Speaker 8: They've been they've been very, very helpful, and I've I've told them and I've told the media that other than Michael Jordan in my lifetime, they've changed the culture of our sport for the better more than any other team, group or individual. And it's it's it's a it's a point of pride for us to represent those guys. I was actually on a show with them the other day and they put me on the spot. They asked me which Fab five was my favorite, and I and being an Indiana guy that always loved the Pacers, I had to go with Jalen.

And it's a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine. As a Detroit kid, the Pistons had a number one seed. We're going to get Kate Cunningham back for a playoff run. Just won a national championship in football a couple of years ago, Now we win it in basketball this year. I'm so happy for Dusty Man and the squad. It's a perfect day the bass up.

Speaker 10: You know, being a quote unquote football school, and you know the team has won twelve or thirteen national championships and has one hundred and twenty thousand people at the game every Saturday. You know that's just going to be the standard. But There's been times even when we were in college, just the Fab five where Desmond Howard was also winning the Heisman Trophy. And so that's an expectation when we say leaders in best, that's a real thing at Michigan. And so there is a level of pride and excellence and you know, not only being great at basketball, but being great at all of.

Speaker 2: Who was bigger on campus, big men on campus, Fab five or Desmond Howard, Well, it was not.

Speaker 2: You know, the way that coach built this team, I don't know if this is the future, but you know that that makes it even more amazing is you're kind of taking pieces from all over the all over the world and going, I can I can put this puzzle together and have a magical run. Is this how teams are going to try to build their rosters in the future.

Speaker 10: Absolutely. You saw Indiana do it in football this year of what's considered a basketball school and all of a sudden, you know they have a team of twenty three year olds and they win you know, the football college football playoffs. This year, and so for Dusty may though, I think I he has the ability to do both and that's what I really like about him. But in this case, turning the team around in two years, you bring in yax Olyndon board Big ten Player of the Year from UAB, and then you bring in Cadot who was at UNC and Marrow who's at UCLA, so a lot of moving parts. Marie Johnson he was at Illinois, you know, and then the school invests in the team. You know, you put up the nil money, you create the budget, and all of a sudden, Dusty puts his fingertips on it and becomes magical. And they did a terrific job, and they were the best team all season. And I was telling this to Jamal Mashburn about Arizona and how they were a great team. But you know, I felt like they were a little handicapped because they didn't make the three.

Speaker 10: And it was really awesome because a lot of people may or may not recognize that's really the third time since nineteen ninety three we've been in the same place at the same time, and one of them was early two thousands at my celebrity charity.

Speaker 10: Another time was a Michigan played in the finals against Louisville. And then one time when Juwan was coaching, we got a chance to go to a game in ann Arbor, so, you know, to be back with Ray Jackson, Jimmy Kyan, Juwan Howard and see Webb and break.

Speaker 10: It was a great opportunity for CBS and TNT and True TV to bring us all together, and the fans seem to really enjoy it and probably would do more in the future.

Speaker 10: The public, So I was like giving yourself a nickname. Initially, we didn't want to be called the Fab Fire. We wanted to be called five Times because as a fan of music, I knew that that was the Beatles, and then of a fan of rap, I knew that was Fab five Freddy, and so we didn't want to be called the Fab five. But then the public wins out, and I'm glad the public was right. Exact same thing with anything else. The you know, the impact you have on people and on the game speaks for itself, and so they determine all of.

Speaker 2: That, how much would it to cost Michigan in nil when Fab five was coming to Michigan.

Speaker 10: So here's the difference, as I learned just covering the game this year with you know Adam Left COO, Jamal mash Burn and Bruce Pearl is, not only would we had the pay for play opportunity which most players are taking advantage of, which is why you see so many players moving around, but we actually sold merchandise, jerseys, shorts, socks, shoes, hairachis like, we actually sold merchandise and helped with enrollment, helped with the popularity of the school. So couple that with you know, pay for playing nil money, we would have made some pretty.

Speaker 10: But in context, you know, I want to give Bam a lot of credit for people who haven't played, just the endurance and the discipline it takes to do something consistently to get to that type of numbers.

Speaker 10: It hasn't happened in the history of the game, whether it's free throws and yeah, it was a little spunky at the end of the game when they were following and trying to get it for them. But if you think about it, it's no different. And I say this with all due respect. If the Cleveland Browns are trying to get Miles Garrett the sack record, they're going to try to help them make it happen at the end of the season, even if the team isn't playing for the playoffs. And so that's that happens in sports a lot, a lot more than people realize.

Speaker 10: Well, I think I knew the entire time that you know, when you're playing against greatness, you know Tom Brady's gonna throw six or seven touchdowns in the game. But the reality that people always forget because people keep using the word record, Will actually has it at one hundred. That's the actual record. And so again, rest in peace. We lost them way too young. But uh, it's really an acknowledgment to Wilt's greatness as well that he still has the record all of these years later.

Speaker 2: Yeah, but as you said, I didn't guard Kobe the whole game. People made us like you're the year. Nobody's bringing up anybody from the Wizards to say, man, this is going to stay with you because you guarded Bam out of Bio when he had eighty three.

Let's give these seniors up because I want to tell people experien serience matters, seniors matter, and them having those six seniors, they scored every single point, Every single point came from seniors. I love that.

Speaker 2: What stood out with Michigan's performance, whether last night or in the tournament overall, Oh my.

Speaker 6: Goodness, there's size. Whoa that was like low key and NBA type team right there. Their size was unbelievable. It was so hard to score anywhere in the paint, not only all season long, leave it was highlighted in this tournament. Unbelievable size, shot blocking. But again, Elliott Caddou, when you've got a guy that can run the offense, experience came over from obviously from Carolina. Didn't have the best career there, but for whatever reason, it changed once he got to Michigan. Confidence wise, Dusty may instilled maybe instilled that confidence in him. But when you've got a guy who can control the temple, control the pace, be that, you know, the head of the snake along with that size. To me, that's what stood out the most their defense in their size.

Speaker 2: Your reaction to Michael Malone going to North Carolina was what good for him.

Speaker 6: I was surprised that last year there were so many job openings in the Pro game and he wasn't able to get in one of them. And you talk about a basketball savant, I thought he got kind of railroaded. Well he was in Denver. This is a great job for him to kind of set pace and step back in life because NBA is go, go go. I don't know how well the recruiting thing will be for him in NIL and all that, but you're going to one of these blue blood type, you know, versities where I'm sure the bank will be open. In terms of ex's in o's, in game management, he is one of the best. So it's I think it's a great fit for him because now he gets the chance to kind of slow down a little bit as opposed to going one hundred miles a minute in the NBA.

Speaker 2: How involved do you think Michael Jordan is at Carolina with basketball?

Speaker 6: I think he has a huge influence. I mean, he's their most famous athlete. Their team is repped by Jordan Brand, So I'm sure he had a scene and I'm sure he did his due diligence. I'm sure he had his conversations with Michael Malone.

But what Cooper Flag has done over the last week or so, fifty one and then I think forty five against the Lakers, that's great and all for Con and his team, every game means something. I mean, they've had the same I get best record I believe since January twenty second only behind the Spurs. And if you look at their starting five LaMelo, Brendan, Miller, Kahn, Miles Bridges, Mussa Diabate, they're plus minus by far. They're starting five by far. It's superior than any other starting five since January first. This is one game and I'm glad we added it late in the season because when you watch the Hornets play, it's hard to kind of gauge their pace and their speed from television. So I'm curious because both of these teams tonight. They kind of are very similar. They both like to jack up a lot of threes. They live behind that three point line. They're both are great offensive reboundings teams, and they're both great defensively. And March fourth, the Hornets came in to Boston and put a whooping on Boston. Now again, Tatum came back a couple of weeks later and they went to Charlotte and Boston did. So this could be a very very welcome be in a first round matchup as well. So I think there's gonna be some messages being sent from both teams.
