Cleveland Browns are in the news because there was a story or stories yesterday at Kevin Stefanski, the Browns head coach, was asked, is you know Dean sanders son Shadoor getting some opportunities with the first team getting some first team reps? Because after all, you know, he would be a hit away from Dylan Gabriel of getting in the game. And Stefanski said no, that he was not getting first team reps. So once again, the media's obsession with Shadoor Sanders getting playing time is interesting because has anybody asked the question to the Tennessee Titans about their backup quarterback getting any reps? Because your rookie quarterback, number one pick hasn't been playing very well. I think it's Brandon Allen might be the backup quarterback. Is anybody asked that is anybody asking if the backup to Jackson Dark is getting any reps with the first team. The media is obsessed with this with Shadoor Sanders, Dylan Gabriel is played, Okay, he's play. Okay, that doesn't mean you've got to put in Shador. I hope Chador gets an opportunity, but I hope it's not one of those let's, you know, do him a solid and have him play. Dylan Gabriel is a better quarterback right now than Shador Sanders. It's plain and simple. Not many fifth round draft picks get this kind of attention. And granted it has to do with Dion and you know, assorts with the Brown said, well, do you think if his name Wasn't last name wasn't Sanders, would he have been drafted higher? Would he have been given this opportunity? I said, I don't obsess over this. I mean we had Dion on at the Super Bowl and he was telling us basically he was going to try to manipulate the draft. He was going to say, don't draft my son. My son doesn't want to go play for you. And then did that lead to him falling the free falling I'm going to guess some of that. People looked at his tape didn't think you know that he the way he played, held on to the ball, he led to a lot of sacks that. Yes, did he play well Jackson State and Colorado. Yes, I put him third on my Heisman ballot. That's how much I thought of him. But I want to see if they have something. You know, here's another thing nobody's talking about because they don't want to talk about it. Deshaun Watson's going to be back this year. I believe in Cleveland, Deshaun Watson could return to being the starting quarterback with Cleveland. Let that sink in. So this isn't just about Dylan Gabriel should do or Sanders. I don't know if either our starting quarterbacks franchise quarterbacks. I hope they get the opportunity because next year, with two first round picks, maybe you use those picks, one of those picks moving up in the draft, or maybe you take a quarterback. But Deshaun Watson, from what I'm told, is at least in the picture for the Browns this season. Late in the season, but I don't think anybody is asking if the Titans, you know, backup quarterback is getting first team reps. I don't think so. I mean we talk about with Tua too as a hit.

But nobody's saying anything about cam Ward's backup, are they? And he hasn't played well at all, got roughed up this last game, but nobody's saying, Man, is it Brandon Allen?

But you know, there's so much money that's bett illegally. I think everybody thought, oh, it's going to be above board.

Well, they probably look at, you know, some activity that looks sound shady and they go, no, we're going to take it off the board. Because there are times when I remember I was going to bet on something and i was getting ten. Then all of a sudden, I'm getting four, and I'm like, and then my book, he took it off the board, And it turns out that there was an injury to the quarterback that I didn't know about you know, we didn't have Schefty back. Then they're like, I'm going to take that game. Wait a minute, where'd my points go? Well, the other quarterback wasn't playing, and then you know they took it off the board. Terry Rozier, a journeyman who plays for the Miami Heat. And Damon Jones, who I don't think is in the NBA anymore. He bounced around a lot, but he was with the Miami Heat as well. We got football coming up tonight. We got the Vikings and the Chargers. Jason Garrett of the NBC Football Night in America Crew, former Cowboys head coach and Football Night in America Packers Steelers. That'll be on Sunday night. We'll talk to coach about that. How do you assess the Chargers from what we saw early to we are now?

Speaker 6: Jason, You know, it's disappointing, but I think a lot of it has to do with injuries, and I don't want to make it about that, but you know, they built their team to be really strong and stout on the offense and defensive lines, and you know, you think about both their tackles being out. I just think it takes away so much of their identity and how they want to play. You know, it's a long year. There's going to be some ups and downs, and I think for them the biggest thing is to kind of fight through this and come out the other side of it, because I think there's plenty there. I think they still have a really good defense. I love the quarterback. I love how the quarterback has to me, has stepped up more in some bigger moments and kind of put the team on his back.

Speaker 6: We had a conversation about this as the Hall of Fame game, and you know, there was debate about how good Justin Herbert is, and you know, my comment is, at some point you have to reach into the chest of the guys on your team and grab their hearts and bring them with you.

Speaker 6: He's incredibly talented guy, obviously athletically, his arm. I think he's a rare guy too, his preparation and all of that, and I think he's taking that next step. So they just have to get through this time with their guys being out and come out at the other end.

Speaker 2: It's almost like if you don't make it as a high first round pick at quarterback, you're going to get kicked to the curb. You're gonna bounce around as a backup. Then all of a sudden you re emerge. So Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold both didn't make it in New York and here they are thriving with different places. And I'm curious about that separation from first couple of years to then you get into your later twenties that you somehow figure it out. You know, Baker Mayfield, when he started to getting kicked around to now and later in his twenties figuring it out. What is it about that position that some guys may not get it early but they eventually get it later.

Speaker 12: You know, I think there are two things. Let's start with the environment that were playing in at the outset.

Speaker 6: You know, typically these guys who get picked high or going to bad teams, and you know, I can remember for years we had this, there was a debate about how do you make the environment more quarterback friendly for Romo.

Speaker 12: Well, we drafted Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, and Zach Martin. You know, it was it was as simple as that.

Speaker 6: And Tony had his best year the year that we drafted Zach Martin because we ran the heck out of the ball we had.

Speaker 12: You know, DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing.

Speaker 6: Tony was incredibly efficient and that's and that's how the whole thing goes. So you know, when you're in those hard environments and you're learning how to play, it's a bad combination. So I think it was as quickly as you can get the environment right for those guys, and typically it starts up front for me, you know, control the line of scrimmage, don't have them running for their lives and make good picks. You got to pick the right guy when you do that, and then you know, those guys learn as they go. They're in a good place. They don't have to do everything. You know, burden is a big thing in football. If you can spread the burden around one part of your team or one guy, and your team doesn't have to win for you every week.

Speaker 12: That's what the best teams have.

Speaker 6: So typically of those guys when they're young, they're carrying too much burden. The environment's not very good, and then people sur on them, particularly in places like New York where there's high scrutiny. So I think the biggest thing for them was to get a reset and then go to a better place. Tampa is a better team than Cleveland was, where Carolina was. Indianapolis is a better team than the Giants were for Daniel. So those guys get a chance to settle in. They have their scars, they've learned, but they're also in a better place.

Speaker 2: I'm also you know, you being a former coach and a quarterback, we talk about reps for backups. You know that Shardoor Sanders not getting first team reps and Dylan Gabriel is a hit way from shud Or coming in. Did people ask you about Troy Aikman's backup? Does he get reps with the first team with the Cowboys?

Speaker 12: He doesn't. He doesn't, And I live that.

Speaker 6: You know, I was the third quarterback there for a while, but I was also the backup there too, And you just don't get reps. You know, the starters get the reps, you get the scout team stuff. You know, maybe you get a little something different. Coaches will give you ten plays on Friday, or they'll give you two plays at the end of a twenty play set or whatever.

Speaker 12: But you know, I learned early on. You know, I would complain to myself, like, how am I supposed to play?

Speaker 6: And then you realize that, you know, if you can't function in this environment, they're going to find someone who can. So you better develop a relief pitcher mentality and you better figure out how to do it. And so the way I did it was you spend so much time watching film, so much time knowing the plan inside and out.

Speaker 6: When I'd be driving home, I turn the radio off, and I'd call plays out loud, right, I mean literally, you do everything you can to create reps for yourself to get yourself ready to go. And you know, i'd throw after practice and you're always doing stuff because you're standing on the sideline, and I would used to call the plays in and the quarterback gets hurt and you put the headset down and it's like, okay, you go from zero to one hundred miles an hour. But you know, the question is do those three or four, five or ten reps during the week. Is that what allows you to play well? Is it better to have the guy who's playing all those snaps anyway, take those and then you just have to have a relief pitcher's mentality to go in and function.

Speaker 6: But you know, Troy Aikman, who's a first ballot Hall of Famer, he got all the reps, and so I think if you're Dylan Gabriel, he probably deserves all the reps too, because he's got a lot of catching up to do.

Speaker 6: Yeah, I can't tell you the number of times it happened, like who what is this doing? But you know, yeah, you have to steal reps anyway you can. And one thing a little bit of a different topic. You know, when I became the head coach in Dallas, there was this virtual reality thing that became available to us and we had it for a while. And the reason we had it was probably because of my experience as a backup quarterback never getting reps. And we created a virtual reality room where backup quarterbacks could go in there and go through Essentially they.

Speaker 12: I mean, it was it was a real thing, and for me, I thought it was invaluable. Not for the starter. The starter is getting all those rests. But the guy who doesn't get the work.

Speaker 6: And I know jayde Daniels has done a lot of work with this, but I think that's a real thing and that's something can really help people going forward.

Speaker 2: And I'm now the defense isn't going to hit me, but how are they moving? So I know where I'm going to, like my hot receiver going through progressions. How much time do I have to do this?

Speaker 6: Well, we had all these crazy cameras at practice, and these three hundred and sixty degree cameras that they made up, and you would have it like fifteen yards behind the ball and everybody you had to stay away from the camera. But literally you would hear the offensive coordinator call to play, go in the huddle, walk up to the line, and you could do this and this with these with these heads that's on and literally there's des Brian. It's not an image of Dez Brian, that's him right there. And you see the safety creeping down and you see the strong dog pressure coming over here, and to me, I would go in there. Afterwards, I'm like, this is incredible. I mean, I love the idea of it because, like I said, I was the guy that was on the highway calling out the place right, So I think it's the way of the future myself.

Speaker 6: Good job offensively. The defense where they made a huge investment, that's a concern. I mean, Joe Flacco had been a Cincinnati Bengal for about a week. He went down there and he looked like you know, Kenny Anderson and and you know Boomersias and wrapped in one. I mean, he was fantastic. So some question marks about Pittsburgh. Their ability to defend the pass really comes up. So I have concerns there. Green Bay, they've just been a little up and down. They've They've had some ugly wins. I really like their team. I like their defense. I think Hafley has done an excellent job. You know, Michael Parsons has been so impactful, you know, opening things up for other guys.

Speaker 6: Well, I think if you look at the team, they're set up to have success on offense. And like I said about the Chiefs, the way I feel about Dak just haven't been with him for a while. If anybody's been watching football objectively without an agenda for the last ten years. You say, this guy's a really good football player. He's played well from his rookie year on and injuries have been a factor for him. Playoff success has been a factor to me. He played really well in the playoffs early on. They haven't played quite as well in recent years. But you know, this guy is a fantastic player. So what they've done is three first round picks on the offensive line. They have a very good tight end. You know you pay Ceedee Lamb, he's one of the best playmakers in the league. You have Pickens who to me, Dak was going to do a great job getting him acclimated. Javonte was someone who I love coming out. It was just a question of is he back from the injury. So there's a lot of weapons on that side of it. So it doesn't surprise me that they've played well as long as for the most part, the quarterback stays healthy. The question was on defense, and even before the Micah Parsons trade, I felt like they were under resourced on defense. You know, who are the marquee guys and are they really marquee guys? And I felt like Michaeh Parsons made a lot of people on that defense way better. He made the other rushers better, he made the cover guys better. So you take him out of them to a defense that I've felt needed help anyway, and you're probably seeing what you thought you'd see. They're struggling to stop people. It was better last week against Washington, but Washington's top three receivers were out, so we'll find out more as they go, but there's no doubt they're a juggernaut on offense and the questions on defense are real.

This according to officials. Three of the more than thirty defendants targeted in today's indictments allegedly involved in both sports betting and fraudulent gambling scheme. This according to the FBI. During the poker games in one of the alleged schemes, those involved used technology such as poker chip tray analyzers and X ray table that could read cards face down. On the damn they could read the cards face down, according to the prosecutors, victims allegedly cheated out of seven million dollars in the poker's scheme. The FBI said that they never take their eyes off the Italian organized crime families. Uh so, I guess the NBA portion of this. Officials dubbed the NBA gambling scheme operation nothing but net Oh Boy one scheme Operation Royal Flood.
