Drake Balbins had a really good year as a rookie with this team, and now I'll get to finish the season in that spot without Murphy because he's undergoing surgery. He's expected to miss four ish months and be ready for spring training. There was an MRI on Monday that showed he had a laboral tear in his right hip, and he said it had been a problem for him for years. They just brought it to Atlanta's attention this year, or he just brought it to Atlanta's attention this week, I should say. And they think it's been a problem for the past couple of seasons. He was really good in twenty twenty three and then really up and down in twenty four and twenty five. You played through a lot, both of you did. But what's your take on Sean Murphy not saying anything to the team at all.

Speaker 2: It's weird and the team not knowing that he was injured. He just played through this constantly is weird to me. I know he had an oblique in some other stuff, but it's weird that nobody knew about this. And then all of a sudden this pops up. But I mean, everyone's pain tolerance is different, and he is, Yeah, hopefully this surgery fix them. They're gonna have an interesting dilemma because they signed him to a long term deal and then they have Drake Baldwin, who's one of the best young catchers in baseball. See what happens.

Speaker 2: That's always the challenge. That's always the challenge guy like Murphy who's on a contract, maybe it's taken, it's handled a little bit differently than a guy who's not on a contract. Like for me in my career, if something hurt, it had to be really bad because you can't go in there and tell them, one, I'm in Triple A half the season. So if I'm in Triple A and I'm like, hey, you know, this is really bugging me or this is really like you have to kind of learn to self diagnose and self treat yourself. For Murphy, he could have gotten on a plan. Maybe I don't know. I've never dealt with hip issues. It doesn't sound like it doesn't sound like it's something that you really want to deal with. But like AJ said, like AJ said earlier, I think we're in an era now where it's like, oh this hurts h tendail. I had a player text me yesterday he wants to come back before the end of the season, and the team's like, hey, just take it easy, and he's like, like, this is my one chance to play in the playoffs, and so like maybe Murph doesn't want to be known as being solid. So he never told anybody that it's a It's an admirable trait. But if you go on the other end of it and say, oh, he could have done something, I don't know. I mean, you can't fix tears in your in your ligaments. You can help mask the pain. But to me, I think it maybe just a case of him being tough, which I think at the catching position, when you play every day, you have to.

Speaker 1: Be So what's the balance of that, right, being tough and not being labeled as a guy that's always in the trainer's room, on the trainer's table, because that's definitely a thing. You hear of that about certain guys all the time, and like you guys mentioned, it's more of a thing nowadays, but that versus your performance for your team. Like on the team side, I feel like they're a little bit pissed because they're like, well, if we knew about this, we either could have addressed it, you know, in an off season. If it's only four of you have.

Speaker 2: This pain for two plus years and hasn't told anybody, I feel I feel like that that's not right. I'm gonna I'm gonna. I'm on a lean towards Murphy's probably said something to somebody like I guarantee he came in and said my hip is tight or my hip is sore or so. I find it hard to believe that it's gotten to this point. It didn't just happen overnight, and you know, so I don't know, but again, everyone's different. I have an example of that. Brandon Moss in twenty fourteen made the All Star team. I think he had like thirty some homers at the All Star break, and that's off season before was he was squatting and he was like, I got to my last rep and he's like, I felt something like my lower back, like butt region. He's like aw. He's like I didn't know what it was, and it kind of lingered. It kind of lingered the whole season. But he's like, I was hitting dingers. I don't know how many hitting that first half. He was hitting tons of dingers all Star Break. There only at the All Star Game and he told Ali, his wife, he said, Man, my hip has just been bugging me all seasons. She's like, oh, why don't you go get checked out. He ended up up hitting like three more homers in the second half. Obviously, he hit the two big dingers in the Wildcard game for the A's, but he goes it was almost like psychologically, I told somebody, and then that's all I could think of. I'm not saying this is the case with Murph. I'm just saying that it is. It's a real world example of somebody that was playing through it and he just didn't tell anybody.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I see it all. So pre All Star Break he had twenty one home runs and a five thirty slugging percentage, and then he went one hundred and twenty five at bats without a home run from late July to mid September, and you did have the offseason hip surgery. There you go, it's funny.

It's the things that go on in your mind, like, oh, well, you know, maybe he's hitting two ten, he's like, I'm don't tell anybody. It's look like I'm making an excuse. Maybe he's hitting three hundred. He's like, I'm hot, I'm gonna stay out there. Like those are the things that go on in your mind.
