If I was ever going to take a head coaching job, it would be in the NFC South because it feels like first team to nine wins gets to win the division. The Falcons come back and surprise the Buccaneers twenty nine to twenty eight. Tampa is now seven and seven. They have two games against the pesky Carolina Panthers coming up to end their season. But wow, a fourteen point comeback in the fourth quarter. Here's Baker Mayfield taking the blame.

Speaker 2: This falls on my shoulders. The NFL is offering yet another reminder of why those early season proclamations those hot takes age about as well as milk does. Let's go back in September. All the Buccaneers there are force in the NFC. You had analyst experts. They thought the Buccaneers were going to rep the NFC in the Super Bowl. Baker Mayfield MVP buzzing. They were six and two, they were ready to go. They had an offense, they had experience, they have a gritty, gutty quarterback. Well, after going six and two, they're now seven and seven, beaten up, inconsistent, and searching for answers. How about the Colts. Let's go back to September. Oh, they had a great start. Then they had injuries, erratic play, and now they might have a forty four year old former quarterback now current quarterback playing against Seattle. Eight and five suddenly find themselves staring up in their own division, a reminder that momentous to him is the NFL's most fickle currency. And then you have the Texans left for dead at three and five. They've won five in a row. H that's the league in a nutshell right there. The beginning rarely matches the ending. In this year's plot, twist is arriving right on schedule. Yes, Todd, we wasn't that the.

Speaker 2: Now that, yeah, it was long ago. That's why everybody wants to have a hot take. You got to get it out there. In September October, there's an ebb and flow. There's a roller coaster ride for just about every team. You know, the Patriots they have two losses. Do you know one of those losses was to the Raiders, once again trying to figure this out. And that's one of those where you go, man, the Raiders might be a little bit better than we thought. Oh, Patriots aren't gonna be as good as we thought. It's reactionary. It's week to week, and you get some of these teams that figure it out. They get healthy. And I thought Tampa Bay getting Mike Evans back, they got Bucky Irvin back. Okay, you should win this game. But in the NFC South, and I say this every single year, it's the team that shouldn't win a game wins the game. It's like the Saints against the Buccaneers last week. I said they shouldn't win, but they will. The Falcons they shouldn't win, but they will. And then you look at the Falcons. The Falcons are really the poster children of what could be and what really is. Whenever you watch them, you go Kyle Pitts, God, why can't he do this all the time? By Jon Robinson, why can't he do this all the time? Because then you watch them, they give and then they take it the way Kyle Pitts injured or doesn't play that well Bjeon Robinson fumbles, you got the Michael Pennock situation. Now kirkde Cousins comes in and he played pretty well last night, certainly in the first half. But you look at the Falcons are all going to be a mystery to me because it feels like every year, I feel like, man, this could be the year, and this could be the year. They're kind of like my South version of the Chargers, like this could be although the Chargers have been better than the Falcons, but I hold out hope that maybe this is the year. And then you realize it's not the year, and it's not revisionist history when you look at the Falcons with the Michael Pennox draft pick, because you had a guy who got banged up when he was at Indiana and then he went to Washington and he played really well and you're playing in the playoffs, and the Falcons decide, hey, we brought in Kirk Cousins and we spent over one hundred million dollars guaranteed, we can't pass up on this guy. It's rare when you have a quarterback where you go, I can't pass up on this guy. Because every year we're seeing more and more quarterbacks that we go, oh Man Mendoza, right, I can't pass up on him. Dante Moore can't pass up on him. Well, you can. You just got to make sure you get the right quarterback at the right time and you don't spend a lot of draft capital to get him. But I'm still puzzled by the Michael Pennox and maybe maybe he turns out to be a quality quarterback. He's not better than Kirk Cousins, but he is your future. But he's not even able to play, and Cousins, I think, is under contract for one more year. I just that one felt like, oh my god, he's still on the board, let's take him. And that's what makes the Falcons puzzling, still waiting for them to maybe get a really, really good defensive player because it seems like, what is it John Abraham? Is that the last great defensive player that I know? Because I always go, man, they could use a couple of really good defensive players. But the offense last night, you come back from fourteen down, you end up winning it at the buzzer. I'll give credit, you know, to the Falcons there, but I got to give a lot of blame to the Buccaneers. You're at home? What are you doing? Come on? Yeah, Marvin, that John Abraham reference was great.

There is no updates here on Sharon Moore he's going to be in court today, but you're starting to hear dribs and drabs, And I want to be fair to the story because it's obviously very serious and it feels like there is some reporting, but there's a lot of it is just sort of salacious stuff, So I want to be fair. I want to be careful with this. Also, no decision on Philip Rivers' status. This is wishful reporting, right, this is prime wishful reporting because nobody has anything that's definitive. But you'll get the following. You know, Philip Rivers is trending to start against Seattle. What does that mean? Is that a report? Then that's he's going to start, barring any setback. He's starting, feels now. I would love for him to start. I'd love for him to play, you know, no matter what happens, and good or bad, it's an interesting story. It's a story in a game that I wouldn't normally care about, and now I do. Like shud Or Sanders playing against the Bears in Chicago, against Caleb Williams, Miles Garrett trying to you know, chase down the sacrec you know, I'm going to care about that game. A little bit more this time of the year, you're looking for. There was no reason to watch last night. I mean it was a standalone game. It's the NFL, and you might have fantasy or betting on the game, but you didn't tune in to go, well, this is going to be a great You probably thought, all right, Tampa's gonna win it twenty seven to seventeen, and then all right, we'll move on, and then all of a sudden you get a great fourth quarter. It becomes must see TV. I'm always looking for what is the game or games that I'm interested coming up this weekend? And sometimes that's really hard. You know, Bill's and the Patriots awesome, Jets and Jags. No, I'm unless the Jets play well here, which maybe they do. They're thirteen and a half point underdogs, Browns Bears. You know, the Ravens and the Bengals. The Ravens are favored in Cincinnati after Cincinnati beat the Ravens in Baltimore, Cardinals and the Texans know, Chargers, Chiefs. Yes, the Raiders against the Eagles. Can you imagine if the Eagles would lose that game? Now you can't say no chance. I mean the Raiders have one, well, they have two players, Max Crosby and Rock Bowers's that's it right now. Oh my god, the sky would be falling if but it already feels like it's falling in Philadelphia. Here it's falling on the shoulders of Jalen Hurts. Here is the Eagles quarterback on bouncing back.

Speaker 6: Success or greatness, those things aren't in near. You have your ups, you have your downs. With Sabay, you respond to it, and I think about think about that. I mean, it's nothing new that I haven't faced before. Some matter of responding to it, and I got a lot of confidence how we respond. I've got a lot of confidence how we go.

Speaker 2: Okay, it feels like everybody wants to blame somebody, and I think there's blame to go around here. But I can't have all of this fall on jail. Jalen Hurts is the quarterback that I think we think he is. During the regular season, put him in a big game. He's been very good. He's been great. So I can't go what the defense is figured out to allow him to throw the ball more and they can't run the football. Okay, it's that simple. Jalen Hurts is not going to beat you from the pocket too many times if he's throwing the ball over thirty times forty times. I got to look at the coach, an offensive coordinator, the scheme of what you're doing. Now, you have a luxury. They had a luxury of a great offensive line. They could run the football. Running the football sets up play action. You've got two really good receivers, You've got a really good tight end, and you even have a running back who can catch the ball out of the backfield. So something is missing there. And I would start with the offensive line, but to put this on Jalen Hurts And all of a sudden, go, coach, you thought about benching Jalen Hurts and putting in Tanner McGee or McKee, doesn't matter, Like, what are we doing? Where else would this happen? Somebody has a couple of Super Bowl appearances, wins the Super Bowl as an MVP, and then all of a sudden, you go, are you thinking of uh benching Patrick mahomes? Hey, Now this happened with Tom Brady. This I might have been twenty fifteen.

Speaker 2: Yeah, might have been the Max Kellerman Tom Brady falling off the cliff. But somebody asked Belichick if he thought about benching Brady and then putting in Jimmy Garoppolo. Uh, I guess you have to ask the question. But I mean I wouldn't I wouldn't recommend doing that. But that seems like, are you really giving this great thought that you're going to put in Tanner McKee over Jalen Hurts. Oh, maybe you sit him down and let him what? Let him what? Watch Tanner play?

Speaker 8: Yeah, the media replaced Tom Brady with seven different quarterbacks. There was no more popular topic than going from the hunky Tom Brady that to the hunky Jimmy Garoppolo. It was like the most obvious switch in the world. Everybody wanted that to happen. Yeah, probably except for Patriots fans.

Speaker 2: Some of the other games Titans Niners, No, you know, Panthers, Saints. Here we go NFC South Saints at home, Rams Lions. That's juicy. Vikings Cowboys is interesting because we're still trying to figure out where these teams are going to be headed for next year. Seems like the Cowboys are in a pretty good position here and the Vikings let me see JJ McCarthy do it back to back weeks, the Dolphins at the Steelers, the JJ Watt situation. JJ Watt goes in for t J Watt goes in for treatment and next thing you know, he's in the hospital because he's got something going on with his lung and he didn't go in for treatment for something in his lungs. I have no update on that. I haven't seen anything, but that's kind of strange. Was it a Tyrod Taylor? Didn't he get a punctured lung? He got a shot before a game, and then Justin Herbert had to come in and play and never look back. Yes, Tom's like the twelfth Man.

Speaker 5: Like Fritzy. Maybe I'll tell you on the matchup. I got two things for you. Number one is the Jacksonville Jaguars are good. The Jacksonville Jaguars are legitimately good and in fact their first place in the AFC South. But nobody's talking about them. I mean, everybody's talking about the tech and their defense and all these games they've won in a row, and everyone's talking about Philip Rivers and the Colts. The Jaguars are just down here in Northeast Florida, just winning games, winning a bunch of games in a row, playing really well on both sides of the ball. They got a great chance to win double digit games for the first time since twenty seventeen. They have a legit good squad, So that's number one. And they took it to the Colts last week. From the Jets perspective, man, it was bad last week against the Dolphins. It looks like Brady Cook, the undrafted rookie free agent, is gonna get his first NFL start, which I love, Dan, I love you know. There's not that many people in the history of the world that can say they start an NFL game. I like he's getting this opportunity. Who knows. Maybe he's awesome, Maybe he plays great for my sake calling the game, I hope he plays great. I'm looking forward to meeting him tomorrow.

Speaker 5: Yes, because that's the game I'm doing. Ok Yes, but no I am. I mean, like everybody else fascinated by the Philip Rivers thing. You know, a lot of teams Dan over the years have reached out to me to come out of retirement. But I just didn't think it was fair to my wife and daughters to reset my Hall of Fame clock. Oh you know. I mean they've been waiting seventeen years already, and so for me to come out of retirement at forty six and have to make them wait five more years for me to be eligible. I mean twenty two years is asking a lot of my family and friends to wait for my Hall of Fame induction.

Speaker 5: It's a mindset thing, It's a mentality thing. Sleeves are soft. There's no other way around it. You are sending a mess to the other team that you are soft, that you're not tough enough if you wear sleeves. I played in Buffalo a bunch of games, played New England.

Speaker 5: You absolutely positively cannot wear sleeves. Plus, by the way, it does give them something to grab. And if you're really that worried about the cold, you can put a thin layer of asaline on your skin, which, by the way, does help protect your skin. You know, ironically, Dan, this is the truth. Okay, the coldest game I ever played, and I believe it's one of the five coldest game in games in Bill's history. You're gonna appreciate this. It was at Cincinnati. It was at the Bengals. I had no way. It was two thousand and four. Look it up. I had no idea it got that cold in Cincinnati. I come out before the game and Chad Ocho Cinco is like, hey, buddy, you better put a long sleeve shirt on because I was sleeveless. It was freezing. Here's how cold it was, Dan. After that game, you couldn't take a hot shower to start because it stung your wind. Burnt skin that bad. You started with a cold shower, then you worked your way up to like lukewarm, and then you got to a little bit warm. Otherwise I don't understand the science, but the hot water on your frost bit wind burnt skin, it was like it would sting unbelievably painfully.

Speaker 5: Both and Buffalo has a lot of wind. There was a game, Dan, I'm not kidding you where our kicker was Ryan Lindell, And I'm on the field goal extra point team. And let's say it was like a thirty eight yarder. He kicked the ball. It probably got to like the goal line, and then there was a huge gust of wind. It blew back like a boomerang and landed three feet from my feet, and the refs were still underneath the goalpost going no good, like, yeah, no kidding, buddy, it almost hit me, No kidding, It was no good.

Speaker 2: How do you explain the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Speaker 5: Wow, that was that was rough. You know, I've never seen so many things that happened. Last night a team had nineteen penalties and they won the game. You know, the Bucks are up by two touchdowns late. It feels like they're finally gonna break out of this funk. You know, it makes these two.

Speaker 2: The penalties were declined. I think the NFL record is twenty three penalties, so they were called for twenty two, but three of them declined.

Speaker 5: Unbelievable. And then Kyle Pitts, who hasn't done this in years. They have no Drake Lundon. Kyle Pitts, All of a sudden, the guy you should be most worried about, I guess he comes out lights him up. Kirk Cousins for some reason, has Todd Bowle's number just a devastating loss for the Bucks the only saving grace and it doesn't make him feel better about it right now. But they play the Panthers two out of the last three weeks. You know, if they beat the Panthers head to head in both those games, they're still gonna win the division. And last night, I guess becomes irrelevant.

Speaker 2: Yeah, but is there a bigger picture here that maybe you do sneak in because it's the NFC South, But moving forward, how long is Mike Evans going to be able to play? Is Todd Bowle's job safe even if you make the playoffs.

Speaker 5: Well, people are gonna ask that anytime there's a collapse like this, and I think, big picture, it's hard to picture the Bucks having any chance whatsoever in the playoffs. You know, I would have said earlier in the season, Hey, Dan, they got Baker, they got those receivers, they got a puncher's chance. You know, they can win shootouts. They're not really playing that way. Baker's not playing as well as he did earlier in the year. Even as they're getting guys back to health, they don't look quite the same on the offensive side of the ball, and they're light years worse than like the Rams and Seahawks. I mean to me, those are easily the two best teams in the NFL right now, and it's right now hard to picture anybody from the NFC, you know, knocking those two teams off. I guess the Eagles have the talent to do it, but certainly they're going to have to play a lot better than they have been to have a chance against those two teams.

Speaker 2: Talking to Ross Tucker and the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, and he'll be in the booth for the Jets and Jags. That'll be Sunday on CBS at one eastern. You know, the finger pointing, maybe it's time to sit down, Jalen Hurts and still not sure. Was that a fair question to ask, Nick Sirianni, have you thought about benching Jalen Hurts?

Speaker 5: I think it is a fair question to ask, and I think it's fair to answer it the way Siriani? Did you know? The thing about Philadelphia is there's not only a very high standard, but there's a track record of backup quarterbacks playing really well. You know, the first time they ever won a super Bowl was their backup quarterback. Now that was because Carson Wentz got hurt. But Nick Foles went in there and led them to the super Bowl. So I think there are going to be people there that have said, Okay, it's been four or five games now for Hurts where he hasn't played well. Tanner McKee has lit it up every time he's got an opportunity. This is the window for the Eagles. This is where they have the great receivers, the great tight end, the great running back, the awesome defense, the offensive line. This is the window, and maybe McKee gives him a better chance to win. I don't believe that. I highly doubt they would bench Jalen Hurts for a million different reasons. But I do think you know, if Hurts has two more games in a row where he has five turnovers, you know, then it might be a more legitimate question. I don't think that's gonna happen. He typically doesn't turn it over. And I had a much different takeaway Dan from that game Monday night to everybody else. I mean, Hurts had five turnovers. AJ Brown had two or three drops. They had a couple of devastating penalties, one took a touchdown off the board, Jake Elliott misses a forty eight yard field goal. If any one of those things doesn't happen, they still win the game. So they would have won a game at the LA Chargers, a good team with a quarterback having four turnovers. You know, they moved it better. Hurts through for two forty could have been three hundred. Saquan ran for one to twenty. I actually came away from that game better than I did against the Bears and the Cowboys when for six quarters they couldn't do anything offensively. You know, turnovers are high variants, They're not gonna happen all the time. Just not being able to move the ball at all, because you can't do anything on offense, that would be more concern to me than sort of a flute game where the quarterback has a bunch of turnovers.

Speaker 2: More important game Lions Rams, Packers, Broncos, Patriots, Bills.

Speaker 5: So the most important of those three games in terms of a team making the playoffs is Lions Rams. The Lions really need to win that game to make the playoffs and have a chance. I think in terms of the Super Bowl, I'll say probably the Patriots and the You know, if the Patriots win that, man, they got a great chance to be the number one seed. Two home games in New England. And I'll tell you the difference in my mind, Dan, between the Broncos and the Patriots. The Broncos are a good team, winning close games, really good defense. The Patriots have an MVP caliber quarterback. You know, he hasn't done it in the postseason yet, But if you're talking about winning big games in the postseason, I don't have a lot of doubt about Drake May right now. And I think they would be the favorite in my mind if they're the number one seed for just Drake May to play well in two home playoff games go to the Super Bowl. Now, if they lose this one to the Bills, then it's going to be a battle just to win the AFC East, and that's gonna leave some doubt about whether or not Drake May and the Patriots are ready to beat these type of teams in the postseason.

Speaker 2: Well, Vegas is already saying that they doubt the Patriots and they out the Broncos. Yeah, because Buffalo Road team favored, Packers road team favored.

Speaker 5: And I think so much of that is just the quarterback. And because the Broncos and Patriots have no recent playoff pedigree. You know, I always wonder about stuff like that. Dan is like, how much of that is the pros, you know, the guys like Steve Ezick on my even Money betting podcast, And how much of that is just the public saying I don't care what I'm taking Jordan Love and the Packers over bow Knicks and the Broncos, or I don't care what their record is, I'm taking Josh Allen and the Bills over Drake May. I think if you look at it, people talk about public and non public teams. When I look at the betting line, a lot of times, it feels like people are just betting on quarterbacks. I mean, the Chiefs are last I checked, five and a half point favorites over the Chargers. Despite all evidence to the contrary, people are still gonna put the money on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Speaker 2: I would too, bet You're right, there's only a couple of quarterbacks. And speaking of quarterbacks, Joe Burrow got dark on a Wednesday with that press conference and what he was saying, and I brought it up in the moment it felt like you get to that Andrew Luck. And Andrew Luck was twenty nine. Joe Burrow just turned twenty nine, and all of a sudden, what you've done for most of your life you're not enjoying anymore. And do I want to continue to do this and all the injuries and the rehab and you know, not being in big games anymore? What do you take away from that in the moment, something or something larger?

Speaker 5: Multiple things. I would say number one is Joe Burrow has always struck me as a guy that absolutely loves football, like loves it. So it's a little bit startling to hear him talk like that. And I would say, unexpect did you know? I will say it's Rehabbing is not fun and losing is not fun. So I do think that there's a point where you say, Okay, I'm getting the crap beat out of me. I've already made plenty of money, we're losing. I don't want to have injuries that really adversely affect the rest of my life. Those are all possibilities, Dan I tend to think that Burrow would want to go somewhere else or force his way out of Cincinnati before he would retire. Now, that's a tough organization to force your way out of. Obviously, we've seen it happen before with Carson Palmer, and maybe he's just mentally beat down. But I think the Andrew Luck thing was more of this physical and mental exhaustion. I don't get the sense that Burrow's there yet. I think he'd probably rather go somewhere else and see what it's like somewhere else before he would hang him up.
