Q1 Report + Now and Then -- How Have You Changed? EP 452
In today's reflective episode, Laura and Sarah record live from their South FL recording retreat once again, sharing notes (victories, works in progress, etc) from Quarter (or Quintile) 1. Then, inspired by Sarah's unearthing of her own personal 1990s memorabilia, the two of them discuss how things have changed (or not!) over the past 30 years.

00:00:09 Speaker 1: Hi. 00:00:09 Speaker 2: I'm Laura Vanderkamp. I'm a mother of five, an author, journalist, and speaker. 00:00:15 Speaker 3: And I'm Sarah hart Hunger, a mother of three, practicing physician, writer and course creator. We are two working parents who love our careers and our families. 00:00:24 Speaker 2: Welcome to best of both worlds. Here we talk about how real women manage work, family, and time for fun. From figuring out childcare to mapping out long. 00:00:33 Speaker 1: Term career goals. 00:00:34 Speaker 2: We want you to get the most out of life. 00:00:41 Speaker 1: Welcome to best of both worlds. This is Laura. 00:00:43 Speaker 2: This episode is airing at the very end of March of twenty twenty six. Sarah and I for this episode as well, are sitting here together in Vero Beach, Florida, enjoying our annual podcasting retreat, where we have been. 00:00:54 Speaker 1: Recording a lot of episodes, plus also. 00:00:57 Speaker 2: Coming up with ideas for the rest of the year, lots of topics that we are excited to share with you guys. So in this episode today we're going to be doing a little bit of a review of Q one and looking forward to Q. Two different people plan different ways. Sarah often has her quintiles, but lots of people think in terms of quarters, so we're going to just take a look at that. We're also going to be doing a now versus then subject. Sarah will talk about a little artifact of her childhood that she recently found, and we're going to kind of think about life in nineteen ninety five, ninety six versus now. 00:01:32 Speaker 1: Thirty years later, and sort of what our lives were like then and now. 00:01:37 Speaker 2: Various parallels that are there and differences as well. So, Sarah, looking back on Q one, you had some big wins. Well, here's the fun thing. My queen tiles don't always mesh with traditional quarters, but this time they pretty much do because our spring break is ending right in the beginning of aprils. 00:01:54 Speaker 1: So there you go. So this could be quintile one or Q one that we're talking about the wins where either way works. Yes, yeah, tell us what you've got. Okay. 00:02:02 Speaker 3: So the first win is that I did hire an in person organizer to come to my home and got started with some sessions. There should have been two by the time that this episode airs. 00:02:13 Speaker 1: I've already done one. 00:02:14 Speaker 3: And definitely in person seems like the way to go. I also have homework and stuff to do on my own. But the truth is that without having kind of specific deadlines, I am not going to move forward with the project that I want to move forward with. So it's been really fun. She is delightful and I'm very excited to have gotten that. 00:02:32 Speaker 1: Off the ground. 00:02:33 Speaker 3: What did she help you organize? What was the first thing you did? Yes, we started with my closet. She has trained in the Marie Condo style of organizing, so we did it by getting every single article of clothing that pertains to me and putting it on my bed and going through all of it in one mega session. 00:02:47 Speaker 1: It was really fun. Yeah, that's probably a lot that was piled up on the bed. Then I have a picture. It's impressive. It's impressive. Okay, then you had a personal win as well. Yeah. 00:02:57 Speaker 3: So this was a goal on my annual list and I actually thought it would take a lot longer, but I got bold one day and signed up to an evaluation class in at Club Plates where they watched you and tell you if you're ready to level up to two point zero, and I made it. So as of now I can say I officially leveled up, and I've already attended a level two point zero class and lived. 00:03:19 Speaker 1: To tell the tales. Yeah, it wasn't really that much harder than one point five. 00:03:22 Speaker 3: Honestly, it was a really hard class. But then some of the ladies there were saying that it was one of the hardest two point oh classes they've been to. So I feel like I've trial by. 00:03:29 Speaker 2: Fire because is it a different instructor then, or just what makes it this particular instructor I have had before? 00:03:36 Speaker 1: But she is sort of notorious notorious. 00:03:38 Speaker 2: Okay, so she made you work for your new two point zero designation, see your new karate belt, whatever it is that you've got there. You guys also had some fun date nights. 00:03:47 Speaker 3: Yes, so this was another item on my annual list, and I've been operationalizing it by trying to plan these in on the monthly level because that seems to be enough lead time to actually get them to happen. We've also come to realize that if we want to get into date nights a month, then probably one of them is best done. 00:04:05 Speaker 1: On a weeknight. 00:04:05 Speaker 3: So we've picked a couple of like random Thursdays and done actually on a couple of occasions. We've planned it around a sports game and then ended up going to like a fun sports bar where they had the ability to watch the game. 00:04:17 Speaker 2: Because then your kids are off in inactivities, or at least some of them are in correct da thing, So you've got a window there as well. And I think the reason you had done it on the monthly cadence you guys don't necessarily need a babysitter anymore, and so you didn't have that push to plan ahead exactly. 00:04:33 Speaker 3: We found that it was very backwards of what young Shoe might have thought, which is that, oh, well, once I don't need a babysitter, we'll just go out all the time. Instead, we stopped planning it all together because we didn't have the kind of reminder that we had to carve out that time and schedule a babysitter. So it was very interesting to see that. I'm kind of surprised, but by kind of making it just a routine thing when I planned the upcoming month, it has been able to happen. 00:04:56 Speaker 1: That's awesome. That's awesome. We had sort of a joint w victory in Q one. 00:05:02 Speaker 3: Yeah, so we actually sold out best laid plans live in a very short amount of time, which is bittersweet because of course we want everyone who wants to plan with us to be able to come. But then it also just means a lot because we have a ton of returning guests, which means that we have an awesome conference. It's a lot of fun. So that that was exciting and also just nice to don't have to worry about whether we would fill those spots. I also had a work win in that I appeared on the Deep Questions podcast with Cal Newport. That is definitely a kind of bigger show and I always enjoyed talking to him, so that was fun. And then I have had on my list, I think, for the last couple of years to go to Pediatric Endocrine Society, and for various reasons, it kept getting pushed aside. 00:05:44 Speaker 1: This year, I have fully signed up. I have paid, So you're doing it. You're doing it all right. 00:05:50 Speaker 2: I'm glad that that's happening this year because I know you look forward to it, and there's been various reasons it hasn't happened to various years. 00:05:57 Speaker 1: You've also done some various fun things. 00:06:01 Speaker 3: I had a category of my annual goals called fun this year, and I will just say that I have gotten to pack a couple of things on that list, including we went to a play we saw Back to the Future at the Broward Center. 00:06:12 Speaker 1: It was fun. 00:06:13 Speaker 3: We had a really fun and successful February break trip with the kids, and I recently took the opportunity to see my second cousin, once removed, play on the Brooklyn Nets against the Miami Heat the Heat one, which was fine. My cousin scored a good number of points and I got the best photo with him after the game because he's like literally two feet taller than me. I mean, okay, two feet mine is two inches, but seriously, like he's six foot eleven. 00:06:40 Speaker 1: He's actually on the court, was probably the tallest player. I like, that's my cousin. It was wild. 00:06:46 Speaker 3: Cameron got him to sign his jersey. It was a big win, very memorable high point of Q one. 00:06:52 Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, people that tall looked tall next to any person, Like you can put them next to a like six' two man and they will still look very very. 00:06:59 Speaker 1: Tall but it was just very. 00:07:00 Speaker 2: Funny See voter next To, Sarah you're like halfway up his like torso perhaps you know, Yes AND i laughed out. 00:07:09 Speaker 1: Loud i'm, SORRY i did. Know we do share some. 00:07:11 Speaker 3: Jeans my dad Was facebook texting with his. Grandmother that's how we got the backstage. Passes so his name Is Danny. Wolf by the, way for any Former michigan, fans he was on that team. Before so the HyG jeens are. Somewhere they're, somewhere just not inside of. Me genetics are funny that. Way all, Right, well that was enough blathering of MY q one. Wins we are going to get into. Yours and the first category you have here is. 00:07:37 Speaker 2: Relationships, Yeah so among my goals for the, YEAR i wanted to go to three professional sports games and one concert because WHEN i do that with, people it is a way to nurture these, relationships and certainly pro sports has been a more kind of different kind of date night to do with my, husband although sometimes our kids come To so he AND i went to a seventy Six ers. Game it turned out to be the same one we had gone to the year, before was versus The. PELICANS i don't, know Maybe i'd get in my brain to do it at a certain time of year and that's when it. Works but this time The sixers one last year they did, not so that was even more. 00:08:12 Speaker 1: Fun ending to. 00:08:13 Speaker 2: That, EXPERIENCE i bought tickets for a concert this. Summer i'm gonna be going To sarah McLaughlin is coming to The Man. 00:08:20 Speaker 1: Center so. 00:08:20 Speaker 2: Cool, yeah, Yeah i'm gonna relive that nineties, fun which is relevant for our nineteen ninety five discussion that is coming. 00:08:26 Speaker 1: Up one of my. 00:08:27 Speaker 2: Relationship goals is to facilitate, gathering and we've actually been having some fun dinners out with our. Kids that's a little bit of a teaser of an upcoming episode that we've been. Planning but we have been gathering as a, family you, know not necessarily in like all sitting around the, hearth but there are other. 00:08:46 Speaker 3: Ways to get together as a. Family and you Visited jasper AND i. 00:08:51 Speaker 1: DID i. Did that was a sort of last minute decision to. 00:08:54 Speaker 2: Do BUT i realized he wasn't gonna be home until Late, april and he was going elsewhere for spring. BREAK i wasn't going to see him from Like january To, april and it's kind of a long time to not see your. Kids SO i went up To boston AND i had a really fun time seeing him and his environment and getting coffee together and walking around and just generally talking about. 00:09:13 Speaker 1: Life so so GLAD i got to do that. Professionally similar with you being on a fun. 00:09:19 Speaker 2: PODCAST i was on The Mel Robbins, Show so maybe some people who listen to this also listen to. Her you. KNOW i heard from a lot of people about that she has a pretty Huge she's, Enormous SO i was very excited to have that, opportunity very grateful to be able to share ideas about how we spend our time with that. Audience so looking forward TO q, Two, sarah what do you have coming? 00:09:43 Speaker 3: Up, YEAH i will SAY i don't Think i've ever had so much consecutive travel on the calendar in my adult life THAT i can. Remember it's just going to be very, Packed SO i do want to be very strategic about making SURE i stay on top of various work. Projects BUT i also just want to enjoy those. Trips many of them are, fun some of them were with, kids some of them are without the. Kids but just really hoping THAT i exit it feeling LIKE i made the most of those. 00:10:10 Speaker 1: Opportunities, yeah AND i. 00:10:12 Speaker 3: WILL i think it'll be a nice kind of cyclical end of the year because once that, ends we will have some relative. 00:10:18 Speaker 1: Downtime. 00:10:19 Speaker 2: Yeah, no that's always good when you look at the whole year and you see that sometimes are more packed than, others and then kind of enjoy the time that is more. OPEN i wound up packing a lot of stuff into the end Of february and Into march THAT i hadn't necessarily planned on doing at the beginning of the. Year but there'll be more downtime, later so glad to do. 00:10:39 Speaker 1: It looking. 00:10:40 Speaker 2: Forward AND q, Two i've got a fun spring break. Plan more on that to come later as. 00:10:44 Speaker 1: Well i'm going to my twenty fifth college. Reunion it is so. 00:10:48 Speaker 2: EXCITING i know twenty five years have passed crazy. Enough i'm going to enjoy the seeing what everyone is up to in their. Lives have kind of been less on social media in the past few, years and SO i don't necessarily know as much what everyone's. 00:11:02 Speaker 1: Doing And Big time comes Out may. 00:11:05 Speaker 2: Fifth that's my next, Book so anyone interested in time management, topics take it, out take a look at. 00:11:10 Speaker 3: It and you have the double whammy of a book promotion season and a continue writing your manuscript. 00:11:15 Speaker 1: Season. 00:11:16 Speaker 2: Yeah NOW i have another book deadline On october, First SO i GUESS i am promoting one book and writing, another AND i GUESS i need to organize my. 00:11:23 Speaker 3: Time, well you're very good at thought though maybe we think fun time in reunion story is That josh like was, like, hey look it's my duke twentieth reunion And i'm, like, no, no it's your. 00:11:34 Speaker 2: Thirtieth it's like, no, no, no my, FRIEND i know you are not in your early. 00:11:38 Speaker 1: Forties time, flies you GOT i, mean, WELL i do worded those ten years. 00:11:44 Speaker 3: AGO i do kind of, remember like WHEN i was young and maybe at my fifth reunion thinking, like oh my, god all those people twenty and up or those twenty, fifths like THAT'S i lumped them with the fiftieth in my head and now like we're right, There. 00:11:56 Speaker 1: Well fiftieth will come, eventually it comes. First hope we're. Lucky we're lucky. 00:12:01 Speaker 2: Exactly, well we're going to take a quick ad break and then we'll be back with more about. 00:12:05 Speaker 1: Then and, now well we are. Back might be a little bit of music in the. 00:12:21 Speaker 2: Background hopefully our sound guys can take that out as the party has started at the. Pool we are here In Vero, Beach florida on spring. BREAK a few folks. 00:12:30 Speaker 1: Maybe picturing people listening to. This there's like a, soundtrack there's a. SOUNDTRACK i don't. KNOW i think this MIC's pretty. 00:12:35 Speaker 3: GOOD i actually think this mic is good at knowing what is like in front of it if it is. 00:12:39 Speaker 1: What is in the. 00:12:39 Speaker 2: Background but, yes if you're getting a little bit of like a sense that you should have margarita and be sitting by the, pool we can blame the music that is going on. Outside but we've been talking about you, know A q one, report quintil one or quarter, one depending on how you do. 00:12:56 Speaker 1: It there's the same this year for. 00:12:57 Speaker 2: Us so the rest of this episode was kicked off by When sarah was up In philadelphia In, february something transpired in her childhood. 00:13:09 Speaker 1: Home, sarah would you like to tell the? 00:13:10 Speaker 3: Story, well my parents kept telling, me, oh we have these, boxes and we think you should look at them before we throw them away because they've been as they. Should and you, know they hand me these boxes And i'm, like oh my, god it's like everything that was COLLECTED i guess by, me BECAUSE i, mean who else would have kept all this stuff throughout middle, school high. 00:13:31 Speaker 1: SCHOOL i mean we had. 00:13:33 Speaker 3: Like the eighth grade awards that were handed, out we had programs from like regional orchestra in nineteen ninety. Seven we had a few things from, college but it was more middle and high. School there was some really moldy old yearbooks and like a fuzzy varsity letter that did not smell good that we threw, out AND i DECIDED i did not want to keep most of this, stuff like ninety eight percent of. It there was one list that it said goals for the ninety ninety nineteen ninety seven school. Year it's written on SOME i don't. Know it's clearly like this paper that my dad must have gotten free from some hotel or. Something you, guys there were forty one. 00:14:10 Speaker 1: Goals forty one. Goals there's a lot of goals on this list. 00:14:13 Speaker 3: In my like slightly, backhanded very bubbly, handwriting but very neat. 00:14:16 Speaker 1: Handwriting And i'm not. 00:14:19 Speaker 3: Going to share all of those goals because, well first of, all there's forty one of. Them second of, all some of them are just wildly. Embarrassing but a sampling is things like try harder at, everything get straight, a's don't gossip in, public stop sleeping in cos. 00:14:38 Speaker 1: You're following as. SLEEP i, mean probably that would help if you want to get. 00:14:40 Speaker 3: Straight it's good to be awake run, frequently which is funny BECAUSE i don't really remember running that, much BUT i GUESS i was trying to work on my jump strength and. 00:14:51 Speaker 1: BACKTUCK i never got my, backtalk you, guys what is a? 00:14:54 Speaker 3: Backtalk by the, Way SO i could do, BACKHANDSPRINGS i could do like run off back, handsprings but the backtalk is like a backflip in the, air and, no never, Happen. 00:15:03 Speaker 1: Probably not gonna happen. Now, No i'm so. 00:15:05 Speaker 3: SAD i MEAN i could do it on the, trampoline AND i did do. THAT i mean the mistake of doing it like after having, kids AND i was, like well that was a bad. 00:15:11 Speaker 1: PLAN i suddenly have to get to the bathroom. 00:15:14 Speaker 3: Exactly and one of my favorites watch a max of three HOURS tv a. Week so if we think that we're concerned about time wasting in twenty twenty six rolling on, TikTok WHILE i had the same, concerns except it was about watching it Nine saved by The bell and, yeah that's a pretty good, show SO i, mean and they were totally. Good that's probably WHAT i used my three hours. For but, yeah there's many, more pretty much too. Embarrassing to state on the. Air but my overhall takeaway having reading this embarrassing, list it's, like oh my, God i'm the, Same you're the same. 00:15:43 Speaker 1: PERSON i am the same and you're. 00:15:47 Speaker 2: Listen you, know you've learned how to make better constructed goals because try harder. 00:15:51 Speaker 1: At everything is not really a. Goal that's. 00:15:53 Speaker 3: True that's a good. POINT i mean SOMETIMES i do still catch myself writing. Something it sounds almost like, that but that's. True i've learned how to better construct my goals since beginning of eleventh. Grade but just the fact THAT i would sit there and like write all this out and then keep it is. FASCINATING i also like thought, about you, know which of my kids would be most likely to create such a, list WHICH i will not detail, here but it was just so. Interesting but it brought us to the topic of reflecting On and you can play long and reflect on, yourself like what has changed since your childhood self and what has remained the. 00:16:28 Speaker 2: Same, yeah and for those of you who are of the same age as, us you might specifically reflect on like nineteen ninety, six, right this is When sarah was doing this, list so thirty years. Ago, Now i'm sure we have many listeners who are like two years old at that age or who were not even born yet at that. Age so you, might you, know think about like two thousand and six or you, know maybe twenty sixteen or, something. 00:16:53 Speaker 1: And we might have older. Listens we might have older. 00:16:55 Speaker 2: Listeners to go for, eighties you could go for eighty six or seventy six or whatever it is for. 00:16:59 Speaker 1: You but to. 00:17:00 Speaker 2: Reflect on a certain number of decades past and what you are like now and if you saw similarities to who you were then and, now or if. 00:17:09 Speaker 1: There are major differences as. 00:17:11 Speaker 3: Well so question before we get into things that are the same are different about. You having seen this, list would you have. 00:17:20 Speaker 1: Been friends with me in nineteen ninety? SIX i would have been. 00:17:23 Speaker 2: HONORED i, mean, like, Okay, sarah you were like on the cheerleading squad And i'm like over here in my like math competition, World LIKE i THINK i would have been flattered if you had chosen to be friends with. ME i. 00:17:40 Speaker 3: Think anybody who went to high school with me is, like, no don't get it. 00:17:44 Speaker 1: Twisted she was not. Cool but, NO i do think we would have been. 00:17:48 Speaker 3: FRIENDS i think we would have like bonded. OVER i don't know math or trying to get straight a's in. Classes, YEAH i would have been willing to watch you try the back. 00:17:56 Speaker 1: TUCK i don't THINK i would have tried it. 00:17:57 Speaker 3: MYSELF i did have a really good friend in middle school where our favorite hobby was to write stories. Together, oh and we would often write them as a, play so each of us we would type on this like, OLD i don't, know very OLD pc AND i actually threw out some of these scripts and they were in the. Box i'm, LIKE i don't THINK i need, Them but, YEAH i feel like we could have done. 00:18:16 Speaker 2: That we could have done, That we could have totally done. That we basically do that together now where we're trading. Today we are sitting here this morning writing scripts. Together so, yes we could have bonded over that. 00:18:26 Speaker 3: Note we could have been good, friends so it would have been. Awesome so tell us a little bit about. You in nineteen. 00:18:31 Speaker 2: Ninety, Six so for the ninety five ninety six school, YEAR i switched high, school SO i was a junior. THEN i Think i'm one year ahead Of sarah in. School AND i went to The Indiana academy For, Science, mathematics And, humanities which is a public residential school In. Indiana so about a dozen, STATES i want to, say have this kind of institution where it is a public school but it is a residential, place usually for juniors and. Seniors and most of them in The United states focus on math and, science like there's The North Carolina school Of science And, math But indiana they also did the, humanities and SO i went there and it was such a good, experience LIKE i realized it taught me how to really work, hard like up until that, point school had not necessarily been all that, CHALLENGING i GUESS i want to, say, LIKE, i you, know got straight a's without working too hard while sleeping, well sleeping in class and definitely could not pull this off at my new. School my grades the first semester were really not that, good BUT i turned it around and all a's by the second semester of my junior, year which was very rewarding to felt THAT i had worked for. It and the skill of breaking bigger projects down into smaller steps and then holding myself accountable for doing those steps is obviously SOMETHING i use all the time now AND i can definitely date that skill. 00:19:59 Speaker 1: Too that. 00:20:01 Speaker 2: YEAR i would say it's been fascinating to see my children learn that. SKILL i would say my two older boys both have encountered in their sophomore year of high school that things have gotten an order of magnitude more. Difficult but this is at our local public high, school Which i'm, Like, okay well, Good i've bought in a good. District then well you. 00:20:20 Speaker 1: Did that's so. 00:20:23 Speaker 3: Interesting and what about your, hobbies, like were they the, same were they? Different you were not a runner back? THEN i was definitely not a. 00:20:29 Speaker 2: RUNNER i did like ballet classes IN i ticked them At Ball. State Ball State university has a wide variety of, classes and among. 00:20:36 Speaker 1: The things they have is dance. 00:20:38 Speaker 2: Classes SO i did those and that was a fun way to get some physical activity. IN i THINK i did go to the gym on occasion BECAUSE i could use the college, gym but not too. Often one THING i did DO i think my sophomore year IS i wrote a series of. Sonnets just HOW i became interested in this rhyming scheme and how that. Works and you, KNOW i had it in the back of my brain THAT i wanted to do more sonnet, writing and then lo and, behold in twenty twenty, THREE i began doing it. 00:21:03 Speaker 1: Again do you have those? SONNETS i THINK i do. 00:21:06 Speaker 2: Somewhere they may be in my writing. SOMEWHERE i, mean you, know they're probably, fine because if you get yourself into this rhyming, scheme there's only so, Bad. 00:21:14 Speaker 1: Like it can't go off the rails that. 00:21:16 Speaker 3: Much, so, YEAH i would like to read some nineteen ninety six. 00:21:20 Speaker 1: Sonnets. 00:21:20 Speaker 2: YEAH i wrote other stuff that, was you, know more off the. Rails BUT i wasn't the school, journalism you. KNOW i wrote for the school newspaper that was, fun. 00:21:28 Speaker 1: That, tracks that. 00:21:29 Speaker 2: TRACKS i wound up writing columns for the Ball State daily newspaper as well in my senior, year because why? 00:21:34 Speaker 1: Not and your hair is the, Same my hair is the. 00:21:37 Speaker 2: SAME i, yeah started dying my, HAIR i think WHEN i was about fifteen years old and chose this shade of ash blonde That i'm sure probably at some POINT i should, Stop but you, Know i've run with it for thirty years now AND. 00:21:51 Speaker 1: I think it. Works. Yeah, well there's a reason of my. Identity there's a reason you stuck with. 00:21:56 Speaker 2: It when we were in the pandemic AND i was writing about the fact that you could die your own hair because a lot of people probably had the experience of going to the salon and that was less of an option, now and so they were trying to figure out could they die their own? Hair and SO i wrote something about it and wrote about having done. It somebody, posted you, know the funny comment of like pics or it didn't happen, right And i'm, like But i've been dying my hair SINCE i was. Fifteen every photo of me as the same hair. Color there's no before or after pictures because it's the same. 00:22:22 Speaker 3: Color that's so. Funny, well and it. Happened you have blue. 00:22:25 Speaker 1: Eye it looks very natural on, you so it was a good choice back. Then AND i think it. 00:22:29 Speaker 3: Did, you like try to match a color you were when you were. 00:22:31 Speaker 2: YOUNG i guess on some LEVEL i must, have ALTHOUGH i think it was just like grabbing something that looked appealing from the drugstore and. 00:22:39 Speaker 1: Well good, job fifteen year old, you fifteen year Old, LAURA i like. It that's so. 00:22:44 Speaker 2: Funny so, YEAH i, mean there's obviously some things that are different To not having a cell phone does change the experience of just human. INTERACTION i, mean one of the THINGS i liked about the residential high school is that you with people all the, time like you didn't have to make special plans to get. Together you would just like see a friend in the lobby and then you're talking like you didn't have to do anything to make that. 00:23:09 Speaker 1: Happen which lowers the bar on social. 00:23:12 Speaker 2: Interactions and you, know especially if you're slightly socially awkward like, me that is. 00:23:16 Speaker 3: HELPFUL i spent a lot of time just on the, phone, yeah, era like on the curly phone, cord like for hours with like one or two like, girlfriends just like passing the. Time AND i feel like that's sort of the equivalent of messaging. 00:23:30 Speaker 1: That my kids do. Today so it's kind of. Interesting. 00:23:34 Speaker 2: Yeah, ALSO i must not have been able to see for. YEARS i didn't like wear my, glasses AND i didn't get contact UNTIL i was like nineteen twenty years, old and SO i have a very fuzzy view of all of the latter part of high. 00:23:46 Speaker 1: School perhaps that is so. 00:23:47 Speaker 3: Funny, well let's take another, break and THEN i don't, know wrap. UP i think we would have been, friends so we don't have to figure that part. 00:23:54 Speaker 1: Out but, okay we'll take one more quick. Adbreak, well we are. 00:24:10 Speaker 2: Back sarah AND i are here together In Vero, Beach florida and our annual podcasting. Retreat we're talking about nineteen ninety six selves versus, Now So, sarah it sounds like you are pretty much the same. 00:24:22 Speaker 3: Person, YEAH i don't think it's a ton has. CHANGED i like thinking about things that definitely have evolved in a positive, Direction LIKE i used to just spend money the SECOND i got, it and THEN i figured out that's probably not a good plan for. Life And i'm jealous of your hair, thing BECAUSE i MEAN i kind of have the same, hair but not really BECAUSE i started straightening it in two thousand and seven and have not stopped since. Then but, man as a high, SCHOOLER i would have loved this nice straight. 00:24:48 Speaker 1: Hair so that's an interesting thing to reflect, ON i. 00:24:51 Speaker 3: Guess but, YEAH i think we were talking about whether or not teenhood and preteenhood is really that different for kids, Today and WHEN i read this, list, like and Maybe i'm biased because Again i'm sort of like putting myself in my old shoes and thinking it's the. 00:25:07 Speaker 1: SAME i just don't. 00:25:08 Speaker 3: Think it's, changed like as much as maybe it's framed by some. 00:25:12 Speaker 2: People, Yeah, well especially WHEN i think about you know People. Tello, oh everything's. Different kids have social. MEDIA i mean maybe to a, degree, certainly there are no pictures of many sort of embarrassing things that might have happened growing up for, us because people didn't do, that like to take a, picture develop the, film share it. Widely like there's so many steps involved that you'd have to be, very very dedicated to the concept to make it. Happen that is obviously not the case for children. Now so there is an element of growing up in, public THOUGH i think a lot of people have kind of they know that and so that they have adapted to. It but like with the social media, THING i, mean my kids aren't on it that. MUCH i mean a lot of the research on social media was done On, facebook. 00:25:53 Speaker 1: But almost no kids are On facebook. 00:25:55 Speaker 2: Anymore like the way my kids are on social media for the most part is like watching. YouTube i'm not using it as like an interactive, thing like they're watching. Videos it's basically YOUR, Tv. Sarah it's it's like low budget consumption at this. Consumption, YEAH i mean that's not true for, everyone because some, KIDS i, think do get into the interactivity or they kind of create their own accounts and then it's, like, oh like being judged by. 00:26:16 Speaker 1: Others BUT i don't. 00:26:17 Speaker 3: Know i'd love to see, data my guestall like from like paying attention to my own kids and like the PATIENTS i see is that might have already. 00:26:25 Speaker 1: Peaked, yeah, yeah could? Have well totally could. 00:26:28 Speaker 3: Have. 00:26:28 Speaker 2: Yeah SO i mean obviously childhood changes and all that stuff, now but we're all trying to find our place in the world and figure out and kids are who they are, Too i'm sure they will see a lot of similarities of. Themselves twenty twenty six, too, boy twenty fifty, six we'll be getting up in years, Then, sarah we will not calculate our age at that, moment be on the. 00:26:53 Speaker 1: Upper, side all. 00:26:55 Speaker 2: Right so this week's question was also one that a listener and how do you plan around and manage energy? Levels, SO i, mean particularly this comes up with being able to do anything in the. EVENING a lot of people see their energy really crash later in the. Day sometimes it's later in the, workday like there's midday. Slump could be the evenings that your energy is. Crashing how can you plan around that and manage? 00:27:18 Speaker 3: It, Yeah SO i tend to be careful about not having a lot of evening hour events in one given. Week i'm not counting the weekends, because as we've, DISCUSSED i sometimes will sleep in and kind of make up for sleep and that doesn't bother me too. Much but since many of my weekday workdays are not very, flexible and that even pertains to some of my days which might be more, flexible BUT i end up driving the, kids SO i still have to be up. EARLY i find that one is like the sweet, spot AND i don't always have, one but ONCE i have, Something i'm probably going to say no to other. Things SO i do think there's like a dose thing to be. Had BUT i also think one is like so much more than. ZERO i, mean if you are doing one fun thing on a weeknight every, week or even seventy five percent of the, time that's three really cool things you did throughout the. Month and if you were with the mindset THAT i just can't do, anything there's a big difference between zero and. Three SO i GUESS i think in terms of, dose and THEN i do also think about things that are still fun THAT i want to, do but it really take very little. Energy so my example for that would be saying To josh, like, ooh The pit's on, Tonight, like let's watch it and have a plan to watch, it because then we know that we will use those kind of down hours in a way that makes us. 00:28:29 Speaker 1: Happy. 00:28:30 Speaker 2: YEAH i think a lot of people could benefit from making a list of low energy intentions so you feel like you're not completely wasting the, evening but you can pick from that list and maybe just spend thirty minutes on, something whether it's reading a good, book doing a, puzzle sitting outside and enjoying the nicer weather if you're in a sort of place where spring is a lovely time of. Year and, then of COURSE i always suggest that people take one night for, you As sarah was saying the. Dose one night could be doing your pickleball, league or your book, club or your, choir or you, know your volunteer shift at the food, bank but something that is one night a week that you plan on and so you're going to manage your energy on that day so that you're not depleted by the end of work because you know you have this cool thing coming up that you plan to. Do AND i think one time a week can be doable for most. People but energy is also. Malleable we can't make more, time but we can boost our energy. Levels and if you know what things do add to your energy, levels if you want to sort of have more energy at lower energy, times you can proactively plan one of these. Things in one Thing i've been doing a lot lately is taking five pm. Walks so taking a really brisk ten to fifteen minute walk right around five, Pm like, first it's a nice sort of palate cleanser at the end of the work. Day now that it's light at five, o'clock it's a lot more pleasant than if it was already. Dark but then that also boosts your energy, levels like physical activity is a known energy, booster and fresh, air and when you come into the evening not feeling quite as, depleted like it feels like you actually added to your energy. 00:30:05 Speaker 1: Levels that might give you a little bit. 00:30:07 Speaker 2: Of nudge to not feel like LIKE i can't do, ANYTHING i just need to sit on the. 00:30:11 Speaker 1: COUCH i like. 00:30:12 Speaker 3: THAT i also sometimes of my day has just been really busy AND i put off my walk until. Evening that is actually one of my kind of like lower stakes. Activities so it might actually boost energy for later in the, evening or it can serve off as a one off like medium activity, level medium energy, level energy. 00:30:30 Speaker 2: Level, YEAH i like. 00:30:31 Speaker 1: IT i like it all. 00:30:32 Speaker 2: Right so love of the, Week i'm going to say mohitos because oh, No i'm. 00:30:37 Speaker 1: Not i'm going to say beach. 00:30:38 Speaker 2: Sunrises i'll say, both okay, Related, YES i put these in the, notes and THEN i totally forgot WHAT i. Put the mohito was last, night BUT i still got up on time this morning to go for a run on the beach because it helped that the sunrise was not until seven thirty SIX, pm so the obvious flip side of the time change where you get more light in the evening as you get less light in the, morning so the sunrise is pretty. Late right, Now, wow it was seven thirty. 00:31:02 Speaker 1: Six if you're not up. 00:31:03 Speaker 3: For, that, WELL i will just also piggyback on this trip inspiring. Mine BUT i love a good well equipped hotel, gym like it's nice when you go there and they actually have the stuff you. Need and by the, way if you're someone that uses like peloton videos Or caroline you'roun LIKE i, do and you, think OH i can't do that in, public just do. IT i really don't. CARE i have my little phone propped up on the, WALL i have my headphones in And i'm watching my you, know virtual. Trainer and if someone wants to think that's, funny that's. 00:31:31 Speaker 2: Cool but, yeah and obviously you can be sort of courteous if there are lots of people who need to use the. Gym oh my, GOD i, SAID i fear like you can't like totally take over the whole weight area by. Yourself but there was nobody there this, morning right. 00:31:43 Speaker 1: Like it was this. 00:31:44 Speaker 3: Morning it was me in the entire weight. Area and then there was one woman on the treadmill. 00:31:48 Speaker 1: And that was. 00:31:48 Speaker 2: It so it was, like, Yay, yeah you have your own private gym and the. HOTEL a good hotel gym is a very good. Thing, well this has been best of both. Worlds we did a QUICK q one review various, wins and then things we were looking forward to IN q two we've been talking about now and then inspired By sarah's list of forty one goals made when she was about sixteen years, OLD i love. 00:32:09 Speaker 1: It we will be back next week with more on making work and life fit.
