Speaker 1: In our ongoing mission to find out why fans loved and then there was Sean, We continue basically a week's worth of episodes, now focused on the man who somehow didn't kill himself or us the week we shot it. We've commonly talked about how fun the Scream episode was to shoot, and how it put all the cast members together and absolutely rare occurrence at that time, and you know what that means, unprofessional teenagers and a very pregnant woman in her twenties. It was the only time we saw this hero of ours yell at us, and it was for good reason. Those around this episode often consider it an a toeur piece. First from the writer Jeff Manel, who made this his piece. There is I can't say it. I just can't say thank you both of you for chiming in as a lifelong lover of horror and a fan of the nineties Slasher come Back. And secondly from our guest today, a director who wanted to make sure the exact vision was accomplished while stepping up our production value for a cinematic tribute and a very famous guest star. This week we welcome back the director of Season five's beloved and then there was Sean our captain, Oh, captain Jeff McCracken.

00:01:31
Speaker 2: Can we do the whole interview in a Scottish accent?

00:01:33
Speaker 1: No, you can't.

00:01:36
Speaker 3: All three it's.

00:01:46
Speaker 1: Are you not going to turn on your camera? Are you naked? Naked? I'm warning all all of us right now before we jump into the episode. I am warning all of us. We could truly talk to you for four hours, but we today are limited to like a thirty minute episode, so we're gonna We're gonna try to cover as much as we can.

00:02:14
Speaker 2: But I first to I feel like I'm game show you are full friend.

00:02:24
Speaker 1: I want to ask right off the bat. We've already gotten a lot of listener's opinions already, but I want to know for you is. And then there was Sean, your favorite episode of Boy Meets World or no, Well, it's one.

00:02:35
Speaker 3: Of the top. I mean, it just was just my wife and I watched it last night, and I swear I haven't seen it in a long time. I was laughing out loud. I missed so many lines because I had to watch it twice. I missed so many lines because I was laughing over everyone's lines. It was so much fun. Oh my god, I had the best time last night. I swear to it.

00:02:57
Speaker 1: I had so much fun rewatching it again. It's maybe the only episode of Boy Meets World I've seen multiple times since it originally aired, because we've watched it for different events. Watching it again one, I've never seen an episode of Boy Meets World where I thought I would actually start watching this at least once a year, just because I could see it becoming. I love it so much. It's so much fun. But your direction was so great. The way we did things, the way the blocking was set up, with the with the guy running back and forth behind us, the way you did things with the lighting, the way all of it was done.

00:03:31
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's so good. How are you sold off making the.

00:03:35
Speaker 4: Suicide falling off a ledge where we were like clearly just on the stage it.

00:03:39
Speaker 3: Didn't have a ledge.

00:03:44
Speaker 5: Yet.

00:03:44
Speaker 3: No, Yeah, okay, cool, all right, Well I'm curious to see what Jeff says. I mean, obviously I've said this before to you guys. When I got that script, it was not perfect for me. I I got it and went, oh my god, this is going to be so much fun. Everything was just perfect, you know, And I know I know, it went through the writer's mill, and Jeff Will talk about that, but I I swear the first draft had everything and everything was there. It was just there because he's such he's such a movie fan, the genre backwards and forwards. And what he did was he implemented a perfect balance of the wink. You know, our audience was okay that we were just scare them to death, but the wink was always there. And and you know the juxtaposition of Will's point of view, his his Heidi Hose and his all these wonderful moments that he get brought to it versus like Danielle's extraordinarily you know, seriousness and and and and and rooted in reality, and then the you know, the mastermind of writer, you know, orchestrating this whole, those machinations of of of the genre. I just was brilliant. I just loved it.

00:04:54
Speaker 1: I know. And it seems like when you read the script it might have felt like, oh, this is some heavy lifting, but also of anxious. Yeah did you were you anxious or were you just like, man, thank you for giving this to me.

00:05:06
Speaker 3: Both cats, you know that we were on stet. It was like you guys were so much full of fun, and and it was the first time I think we I mean that I had all of you together like that. Yeah, and it was it was a celebration of the show. It just was. And we shot, you know, and I I know that, Uh you think you drove me mad and I was upset, and but but I really wasn't what I was focused most on. I didn't.

00:05:32
Speaker 1: I wanted to be sure.

00:05:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, you were a little upset, just got over it quickly by the next day.

00:05:40
Speaker 3: You did not love us like hurting cats. Sometimes I had to like and then and then, But it was movily about the joy and the laughing and the exploration of the show, of the script, which was so much fun. That's that's what was. You know, you didn't want to dampen that we were shooting without an audience, so we really had to which was another dynamic that we weren't We weren't feeding off an audience. We weren't you know, we didn't have the spacing, you know that that energy of the audience was not there, So you guys had to supply everything. You know, everything had to be orchestrated in a way that moved like a locomotive. Down the track. But also I know we played this for live audience and they loved it. They weren't bananas for it. But I was wondering, why do we didn't put more air in the show for laps? But then I go, well, then we would have to cut stuff out. Yeah, we didn't want to lose any of that.

00:06:34
Speaker 6: Didn't wait was this Was there ever a possibility that this was going to be done in front of the audience or from the second it's okay this was this was going to be shot like this?

00:06:43
Speaker 3: I got it and I said, guys, no, there's no way this is we just run through, Remember I run through as we would go from this these set pieces, you know, and it was just two it was. It had to be orchestrated in a way where the camera moves were always motivated by the actors. I wanted you guys to you know, the characters that I didn't want any extraneous camera moves. I don't want everything to be motivated by that. If there was a camera move, and and the the dynamics that were playing, the energy of the piece had to be such that if we had had an audience, we would have been rushed. You have been rushed to not take our time to get it right, you.

00:07:27
Speaker 4: Know, or have been asking the audience to like hold for an hour while we get one panting shot.

00:07:32
Speaker 3: Or exactly right, you know. And so I'm really glad we did so. I said to Mike glam No, this is this is a I just come off a show called You Wish, which was all single camera insanity and with it it was a precidium show with four cameras, but we shut it as a single camera.

00:07:49
Speaker 4: Show and it was specially Okay, that makes so much sense because I actually we noticed when you came back for this season, which was too like two episodes befo for this one. It's when and and we noticed that there was in the performances. I was like, who directed this? I was like, obviously because we were all just like everybody comfortable, But then there were camera moves. So I was sitting there going when was Jeff like prepping a feature or something like what was happening that he suddenly brought like a single camera directing sensibility.

00:08:24
Speaker 1: Well before I thought we got a we didn't have a pad. We had something on a dolly because we started in on Corey and Sean up at the locker and then he closes the locker and then the ped backs out and goes away.

00:08:36
Speaker 4: So you were doing it and you wish so you kind of brought it into our show when you came back.

00:08:40
Speaker 3: That's so interesting. I had only our guys were not really equipped to do the shots.

00:08:46
Speaker 1: That's why it was a little bumpy.

00:08:47
Speaker 2: It's a little shaking.

00:08:49
Speaker 3: The shots sometimes didn't quite you know match and and so yeah, like one shot, Ben's noses in the shot. You know, that's one of the planets. But it's one of those things. I uh yeah, I just but with this show though, I particularly wanted to make sure though that it honored the genre, made sure that you guys were always on point, that when you were, you know, hitting a joke and hitting a moment, that it was clear and and and and breathing and uh and and and and clear and fun.

00:09:22
Speaker 5: You know.

00:09:22
Speaker 3: That's why I just was like, and you guys hit it out of the park. I mean, I swear I laughed so hard last night because you know, you have a history with you. I have a history with you from other shows and other other stuff, but this has had a certain ring to it that just brought it all four front and all of your characters were just firing on all cylinders. It was just so much fun.

00:09:46
Speaker 1: Do you remember your conversation specifically with Manel, Obviously this episode meant so much to him.

00:09:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you know what Michael said to write it, and when he gave me a heads up, he wanted me to direct it, and I just I said, come off if you wish. And I'd done the show before, which was I love that show and even though there was some you know, logic it's problems with but but but but overall, it was a great way for me to come back. And then this was just a coup de graph. He said to me, I guess something real special, you know, you know, I hope you like it. And I read it. I called him and I said, this is just note perfect, dude. I love this. It's We're gonna have so much fun with this. I can't believe how great this is. I was. I was over the moon about it, I really was. I was so excited about it.

00:10:36
Speaker 1: Did you have any specific horror film inspirations and what like inspirations like, did you have any like horror film ideas, you know, anything like specific inspiration wise in your brain.

00:10:50
Speaker 3: Well he wrote, he kind of put it right in there. You know, his writing was right in there. So the visualization stuff was kind of just paying homage. All the jokes were you know, with Scream and with with.

00:11:04
Speaker 1: I mean, you know what you did last summer.

00:11:06
Speaker 3: You know, all those different dynamics were kind of in there because of his love for film. So it kind of informed me. You know, I didn't really have to do too much other than I execute, because I mean I would embellish some some things once in a while. But you know, in terms of music, cue and this and that, I mean there, those are things that all kind of we worked out in advance and and had fun with. But everything else was kind of when I read it, I started immediately storyboarding, you know, visualizing certain moments and how I would do them, and then once we got to the stage, if it didn't work, I threw it out and then said, oh, this is a much better way to do it, because you guys would inform me, you know, you know, the classroom stuff was always a challenge because in terms of covering you all and making sure everyone was where there should be in the classroom before the writer's you know, imagination his daydream versus or nightmare versus the actual nightmare itself. So I think that answer your question real quickly. I just as I said, I love that genre. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I've watched it. Yeah, and when I see a good horror film, boy, you.

00:12:31
Speaker 5: Know there's nothing like it.

00:12:44
Speaker 1: Well, and let's get to our very big guest star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, who was obviously Will's girlfriend at the time, but having her guest star was a big get for us. Oh yeah, what do you remember about her? And how Will would kiss her and hang all over.

00:13:01
Speaker 2: Whose idea was the sexual assault?

00:13:06
Speaker 1: Probably Will?

00:13:08
Speaker 3: Probably no real it was an instrumental in that. And and when she arrived, she couldn't have been nicer. She couldn't. I mean, you know, you think, oh god, she here's this big star coming to the show. What's it going to be like?

00:13:24
Speaker 5: Wow?

00:13:24
Speaker 3: She fit right in.

00:13:25
Speaker 1: Yeah.

00:13:27
Speaker 6: Well, she knew everybody, and you know, she close I was everybody, and she was game, and she was you know, a great actress and would always throw herself into a project.

00:13:36
Speaker 2: So it was it was fun again.

00:13:37
Speaker 6: The the macking against her on the wall, none of us remembered it being that intense, and we watched it again, it was like, oh my god.

00:13:45
Speaker 7: We were like, none of us, say, certainly the most intense kissing scene we ever had on Boy Meets World.

00:13:55
Speaker 6: But yeah, no, she was always easy and fun to work with. I had a question something we asked when we were rewatching it. None of us can remember when we were shooting it. Did we were those songs already recorded?

00:14:07
Speaker 1: Did we have those?

00:14:08
Speaker 2: Were those played back for us as we were in the hallway.

00:14:11
Speaker 3: Yes, we were, Okay, we had we had. Yeah, Ray had come up with a couple of music cues for us, and uh, because we we we really wanted that, and so yeah, we we we did have some songs. So we didn't have the stings. We didn't have those, you know, right, But then well we had in the hallway. No, you know that that kind of twenties.

00:14:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, song so good, it's so good because it's creepy.

00:14:40
Speaker 2: It's so creepy, creepy.

00:14:43
Speaker 3: We did have very funny because you ben running around flapping, Ye disarms you in the humor because we're supposed to be scared. He's making it funny. And so as you all did so it's kind of that's the beauty of it, and.

00:15:00
Speaker 2: It became Scooby do it at the times it had Yes, yeah.

00:15:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just great because you had the ombiance of you know, the janitor Bud, you know, who's obviously extraw near these creepy looking and scary.

00:15:11
Speaker 2: And janitor Fred.

00:15:13
Speaker 6: This was not, but it's something that we actually looked into quite where because we can't find him anywhere or no, we can't.

00:15:20
Speaker 2: Find this man. We're trying so hard to just find this man.

00:15:23
Speaker 1: No one knows who he was, No one knows.

00:15:25
Speaker 3: It's yeah, if he's out there, if you're out there somewhere, let us know.

00:15:30
Speaker 4: I know, we had this conversation who he is and we want to know who the stand in for me because remember it was one of our background factors who had the same hair as me. And we can't remember his name.

00:15:40
Speaker 3: The poor guy had to do so much and.

00:15:42
Speaker 1: And we see him. He's featured in so many episodes. We see him. We're like, there is there is, there is, but we don't have a.

00:15:49
Speaker 2: Memory of his name. And I could be wrong.

00:15:51
Speaker 6: It could just be that he looks like him, but for some reason I remember his name being Shane. And it might be that he looks like Shane Wat a little bit, but I have a memory of his name being Shane. I could be wrong, but for some reason, that's why I'm sure it doesn't sound right to me.

00:16:07
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure I'm wrong.

00:16:08
Speaker 1: But that's yeah, that's.

00:16:09
Speaker 3: What you know. And I m dB. There's a there's an actor at the very end of the credits, Travis something, and I wonder if that's him? Really, Yeah, there's ay, there's an actor at the very end. He didn't didn't do anything else really, but if you look at it just says boom, it's just there. I'm wondering if that could have been him. Have a line? So, I don't know.

00:16:33
Speaker 1: If that you'd have you could have given us a lead. Yeah, so we alluded to it already in this in this conversation, it is truly folklore among us that this is the very first and only time you ever yelled at us. And we deserved it. We talked about it when we believe it. We we we remember being absolutely mortified and also completely incapable of getting it together. I would love to hear your side of it. Do you remember, like, what was the actual breaking point, please please, the.

00:17:12
Speaker 4: Theory of which I remember the breaking point, You guys had a different one. So okay, I'm gonna hear which one.

00:17:17
Speaker 3: General it was. And I wrote this down because I wrote it down because I said, this is this is the moment where I lost it and I scared Ben.

00:17:29
Speaker 1: Oh yeah.

00:17:30
Speaker 3: It was when Ben he he says, I have it here. It's it's no no. It was when he says, all right, now we gotta get serious, you know. He he does this thing.

00:17:51
Speaker 1: Where is it in the school hallway?

00:17:54
Speaker 3: It's like one of us know this is in the classroom, and he could he kept laughing and laughing and everyone was everyone was laughing. It came off of exchange between Matt and Will and Rider. You're standing in the door, go and Corey goes, stop it. You have to get serious here, you know. And he could never do that without laughing and must have done ton ten takes. I was like, we could not. I just said, there, okay, okay, one more time, guys. I didn't want to rain in your parade. It was it was the hardest thing of not killing the joy, you know, and and and destroying the the energy. But at that point he just could not stop laughing, and I said, I did. I lost a little bit. I did yell. And then there was another time too. It was there was that where I just you know, you want to take it, you want to I think I said, you want to take a break. If you want a break, if you I'm serious about this, it's like a break, we'll come back to it. I don't, I can't.

00:19:01
Speaker 4: You know, you've got to get pulled when I think you said something like let me know when you're ready.

00:19:05
Speaker 6: To act, let me know when you're ready to act.

00:19:10
Speaker 2: Let me know when you're ready to act. Yeah, okay, so that's yes, I said that.

00:19:15
Speaker 3: Yes.

00:19:15
Speaker 1: The other time, what's the other time you're talking?

00:19:17
Speaker 3: That was in the hallway when we were dealing with uh when the janitor's head that the head thing when you're pulling, yeah, pulls his head up. I just couldn't get you guys together. It was like this, This kind of was, as I said, hurting cats. There was this energy was all over the place, and and and and that's because the scene wasn't really that focused. It was joke joke joke. Angela does the scream you know writers saying you know, basically, are you ready to scream, and then Ben's looking at the the the and seeing that.

00:19:54
Speaker 2: The retainers twelve retainers, and it.

00:19:56
Speaker 3: Was all kind of this missmash and you guys were just having fun with it, and we just we couldn't get the timing right, we couldn't get it focused.

00:20:03
Speaker 1: I remembered it happening during a time where I don't think we ever even got the shot you wanted, because it's not in the show. What my memory was is that you have this great idea to do a slow pan of all of our faces where we were supposed to look possibly one of us as a murderer, one of us as a murder, and you had a single you had, you had the handheld and one of each of our faces, and you wanted it to go from single to single the single. But we all kept looking at each other, at the faces we were all making, so by the time it get to the camera of us, we'd go and we wouldn't be we'd all us remember that.

00:20:41
Speaker 3: I do remember that, I do remember that very well. But the shot that I looked at was pretty good.

00:20:46
Speaker 2: I mean, it's great, it's just shots.

00:20:51
Speaker 1: I don't think you ever got those single shots you're.

00:20:53
Speaker 4: Trying to be just one big pan from left to right and you never got it, and oh my gosh.

00:21:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I was frustrating. I do remember that.

00:21:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know, four moments within our collective memory, we all have four moments of Jeff losing it.

00:21:12
Speaker 2: I think they all happened, and.

00:21:14
Speaker 1: We all have we are so sorry.

00:21:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't apologize, No, no, I looked at that show last night. It's worth every moment of it. And I just one of the things, as I said, it's like I remember Ben saying, you scared me, and I went, I'm sorry, I scared you.

00:21:31
Speaker 2: But yeah, it was just so much fun all the way.

00:21:34
Speaker 6: But I mean even the arguably I think we talked about next to this episode, the Subway episode was so.

00:21:42
Speaker 2: You never lost it on that. So we were really pushing.

00:21:44
Speaker 3: Some too, and we shut down in pieces that was in pieces, piece here, a piece there, you know, Danielle dancing down or or you know writer coming in with with the with the nurses. It was it was like, you know, that was there was a set pieces that were much easier to to break apart and do having you all together, seating off each other and having a great time. I mean, it was a great time. And I that's the one thing that I cherished and and one thing I did not want to spoil.

00:22:16
Speaker 6: Yeah, well it's the it's literally the episode that Matt says he felt like he was part of the cast.

00:22:21
Speaker 1: Yeah.

00:22:21
Speaker 6: I mean we're seventeen or eighteen episodes in and he's like, now, I felt.

00:22:25
Speaker 2: Like I was really part of the crew, and he was really brought us all together.

00:22:28
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, Yeah, it was just terrific and you all were just you got off each other beautifully. It was just one It was a magical, magical show. For that I I I really relish it. You know, I missed I missed the dynamic of am King, Rusty and Betsy's in the episode. So yeah, but I missed them. But but Bill was fan. He was game game from the very get go. He came in and played, you know, and we always thought, how are we going to get him to die? You know, And and so we came up with the scissors, and.

00:22:57
Speaker 1: We talked about how he did that over and over again, had those kneepads on and fell to his knees and then fell flat on his face over and over again.

00:23:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, Well he had a cushion.

00:23:08
Speaker 1: No, no, it was on his face.

00:23:12
Speaker 2: We gave him a little soft flash, but it was. He nailed it every time.

00:23:16
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was so so good. Now, looking back, do you think during the week you thought at all about how whether or not you thought this was going to be a popular episode, Like did you were you thinking like, oh, the audience is going to love this, or were you not thinking at all about the audience?

00:23:35
Speaker 3: So I loved it. If I pulled off what I saw, I knew was going to be great, you know, some one of those things where if I can just pull this off, I know that I will be honoring Jeff's script, and I know in the cast, and I know I know it will live and breathe on its own. That's I knew that much because I when they and when they said we have Jennifer Love hewittt and and I saw the janitor and and I saw this sets, and I saw everything was coming together. I went, this is gonna be great. This is just gonna this is gonna I just can't mess it up.

00:24:07
Speaker 1: Now, Well you didn't, you get you did? We tried what we did?

00:24:17
Speaker 4: Isn't Isn't it crazy? The way that we watch this, which I mean, like I know that this is in part the the experience of just doing this podcast, but for this episode in particular, it's so extreme to me that on one level, it's just a funny episode of television.

00:24:34
Speaker 2: Like it's just so brilliant.

00:24:36
Speaker 4: The jokes are the best Boy met World has ever been in terms of just last per second. And then it's also like a family photo album, you know, that has this like feeling. It puts me right back there where I'm like, oh my god, and I have all the memories of the entire of every scene and every beat, so it's like it's so layered and rich and just it's like one of the greatest documents to have in my life. Like I I'm going to cherish this till the day I die. I'm going to watch this over and over, and it feels it's that doubled experience that is wonderful on both levels. On all these levels, it's so great.

00:25:09
Speaker 6: This also just showed it showed how our show never got the recognition it deserved because being such a television fan, I would put this up there with one of the best episodes of television ever. And maybe it's in its own sub genre because it's a kids show or it's for younger people, but.

00:25:26
Speaker 2: It is just a great episode of television. It really is. Yeah, very proud of this.

00:25:31
Speaker 3: I agree with you hardly.

00:25:34
Speaker 1: Well, Jeff, I hope you will accept our thirty year later apology.

00:25:40
Speaker 2: Danielle's very sorry for you.

00:25:42
Speaker 1: Really feel very sad, you know, because the memory I remember more than anything is that last line that he said to us, let us let me know when you're ready to have and then watching his very long limbs storm off on the set and hearing the stage door open and he left the stage. I'm going to lead, And the second he was out of my eyesight, I burst into laughter, and we allo started laughing because it was like we were so in giggle mindset and and we had never seen you lose your cool period, not even just not with us ever. Ever, you were the most composed, And it would make so much sense that it.

00:26:21
Speaker 4: Was that line because that's the one line we couldn't break on, because we could have broken on a lot of the other joke lines.

00:26:29
Speaker 1: Guys, we got to get this serious.

00:26:30
Speaker 4: Corey has to be saying, we got to get the serious. You can't have him laughing through that.

00:26:36
Speaker 3: And he was laughing. He could not hold it together. He would go, you know, he would come in and do this, we got the Syrian and that would be like, okay, let's do it again.

00:26:51
Speaker 1: Well it is. It is truly of all the episodes we did of the show, I think it's the only one I would say is a core memory for me. This episode, this week, these moments are just core memories that, like writers said, have are like a family photo album, and I'll carry them with me for the rest of my life. I love it more than anything. It's the reason why in every live show or in every Q and A we've ever done, people say, what are your favorite episodes? It's the reason why we go to this one. It's not because it's the one that is our favorite storyline for any particular character. It's because this week making this show us as a group, it just felt so right, and we never got to do this with all of us together, even though we were like hurting cats was it was really bonding and memory building for all of us. So thank you for being our captain, Oh captain mister Jeff McCracken. Yes, we love you, We always love you. I can't wait to talk to you again. This felt like a blip. We could talk for another three hours, but we will let you go. Thank you for being here with us.

00:27:57
Speaker 3: And we will love you. I love you, Jeff, Thank you all of you guys.

00:28:03
Speaker 1: By bye. We don't ever have enough time with him.

00:28:07
Speaker 6: And now no, we just talk to him forever about But it's also he's just such an interesting human being and so engaging that even if we don't talk to him about boy meets Throw, we talked about something he did in his career, you're as engaged as you would be even if you're talking about this.

00:28:20
Speaker 2: So, yeah, he's one of those guys I could.

00:28:22
Speaker 1: Talk probably listen to him talk about dust and find it fascinating.

00:28:26
Speaker 6: Yeah, and getting him to yell and walk off the set is the equivalent of getting Gandhi to yell in your face and walk on, you know what I mean, where it's like, oh my god.

00:28:33
Speaker 2: Gandhi just screamed in my face.

00:28:35
Speaker 4: Kind of an accomplishment.

00:28:36
Speaker 6: Then proud, Oh it's so funny.

00:28:42
Speaker 3: That's the line.

00:28:42
Speaker 4: Let's flip this, let's flip this.

00:28:44
Speaker 3: We do something.

Speaker 1: Was he mad? Did we make him mad?

00:29:13
