Hour 1 – Trae Young Is Just a “Buster” Trade, Rooting for Ole Miss

We got football coming up ten hours in counting until kickoff Miami and Ole Miss NFL games over the weekend. Trey Young gets traded. Man, It's not that he wanted out of Atlanta. It's Atlanta was going to trade him, and I think he got to pick maybe where he was going to land, and he'd picked Washington for some reason. I don't know how many options he had, but this is one of those where you look at his stats. He led the NBA and assists last year. Like you look at his numbers and you go, of course, Trey Young's a great player. He's not. He has great stats, not a great player, and obviously a liability on defense. And you know, you go back to Jordan Poole got punched in the face by Draymond Green and got traded to Washington. It feels like if you get traded to Washington, you are getting a punch in the face but Trey Young decided that's where he wanted to go. So now he's a member of the Wizards. The artist formerly known as Trey Young. Yes, Paulie, you want to get traded to the Washington Wizards. Do you want to go to a quieter, less relevant place. Well, Atlanta is not a great place for NBA basketball.

And they decided that you're going to move in a different direction, and they've got some young players. But I go back to the Atlanta Hawks when Dominique Wilkins, when you had that great team and going toe to toe with the Austin Celtics in the Eastern Conference. You didn't get a great fan base. You got fans who showed up to see the team that was coming into town. And I was there when they were playing in the Omni and I remember you could stop over and move your way down to second, third, fourth, row and watch great basketball, but you know, it's not a great sports town professionally. Even the Braves. I go back to when they were terrible, but they had a nucleus there, like they had a lot of young talent. They just weren't very good, but you could see where they were going to be something. And you'd go to Fulton County Stadium and I got to sit wherever I wanted to. I was working at CNN at the time. It's a college town. They love their Georgia Bulldogs, and rightfully so. But Trey Young out of Atlanta, and this is a guy gets you. Twenty seven and ten used to be hard to find. Twenty seven and ten. Today's NBA feels like it. It's a little more readily available, believe it or not.

I don't know if you sign a contract that a team another school can't, you know, tamper with you. But LSU was tampering with Demon Williams, the great court back, and he signs a contract. Now he's in the portal, and word is that he's going to end up at LSU. I don't think you can punish the kid because he decided, yes, I sign a contract, But now you're going to force him to go back to Washington. It's just not going to happen. They might penalize LSU for reaching out to a kid who's signed a contract, but I don't know what these contracts are like. They should be standardized that if you sign the contract, then you are beholding to that school for that year. Because he's probably getting paid, got a signing bonus. He's going to have to pay that back. But there's once again, this is going on and it's going to continue to go on. And somebody says, hey, I got an idea here. You'll get some smart people together and you can solve a lot of this, whether it's when the season starts, when the season ends, when coaches can lead the transfer portal, nil electives, and it's crazy. It is crazy out there and going to continue to get until somebody says, hey, I got some ideas. Would somebody listened to me. By the way, I brought up the transfer portal with Brendan Soresby, he was Cincinnati's quarterback. He's going to Texas Tech. I was initially told that he's getting five million dollars a year. Now I find out it's five point nine to eight, so almost six million dollars a year to go to Texas Tech. Texas Tech, I believe spent seven million dollars on their defensive line last year, maybe their offensive line. But if I look at cam Ward number one pick, he made eight point eight million dollars, and you got Brendan Soresby's going to make almost six million dollars. So cam Ward the number one pick eight point eight seven million dollars in the NFL, and you've got a quarterback in college making almost six million dollars. And then you got the Layne Kiffin situation where Lane is getting paid. If Old Miss continues to win, Lane wins. Jimbo Fisher had some strong words to say about Lane Kiffin leaving Old Miss when they were in the playoffs and now at LSU. It's selfish, that's what it is. It's stupid.

Speaker 8: And because here's why I say that, he wanted the coach and thought he didn't get his way. So everybody get on the plane with me. You don't have a job, all right. He makes them all go. Then he gets down there and takes a pr hit because it looks bad that you really don't care about the kids. Then he says, okay, you can go back. But here's where he screwed up. He thought they were gonna lose. He thought they were gonna lose a Georgia. Now the portal thing was all over with, and it was gonna be all over with. He said, oh, I'll look like a hero. Now he's got egg on his face because the real Lane came back out, you know what I'm saying. And he's And if those guys were allowed to coach a first game, they should be allowed to coach before. Because those guys are doing those kids are doing something that you get one time in your life to air or do okay.

Speaker 2: The college football has created this situation. Why can't we get to a point where the end of the college football season if we make it earlier, and then Lane Kiffin goes to LSU. He wasn't going to pass up LSU great opportunity, I get it, but I wouldn't have let him coach Old Miss. And now I think because he took an incredible pr hit, that's when Lane goes, well, i'll loan you, you know, the coaches back, and keep in mind, reportedly when he was going to LSU said to his coaches, you're either on the plane or you're not. So they made a fast getaway and then all of a sudden, I think Lane thought that Old Miss wasn't going to go this far, that they would lose to Georgia. And then hey, you know what, man, we had a really good year and I wish them well and you know, go Tigers, but you have this game coming up tonight and if if you're Lane kiffen, I know if you win, if Old Miss wins, you you win with money, but you don't win. I don't think with public perception of this because then it's going to be well, they're winning without Lane Kiffin. Now he helped build this team. And I'm wondering how we're going to look at what if Old Miss wins the national title and they can they're in the final four. How are we going to view Lane Kiffin when it's all said and done. Is it going to be Lane kiffen one national championship on his resume? Does he get a national championship asterisk? Does he get part of a national championship? Does he get a ring? Is he part of the ceremony? But Lane miscalculated, Yes, he was going to take the job. I think he thought Old Miss was going to lose earlier. Therefore this doesn't hang and it's there. And then when I saw that Lane was maybe going to join the broadcast or be part of the pregame, I go, no, no, let these kids have their moment. You could have had it. You chose to take the money and run, and then you decide to loan out your assistant coaches, which that's very generous. It's nice. I'm glad that those assistant coaches are able to help. And I can't help but root for Old Miss just because of the story. It's wild, but I hope Lane knows stay in your lane. See what I did with that ton very clever. Thank you, Stay in your lane. Root from Afar. Hopefully you're rooting for Old Miss to win and you also get a million dollars.

I think publicly Lane Kevin's going to get very little credit, even though he built this program up. But if he does not win a title at LSU and Old Miss happens to win one, it'll be on his resume forever.

Lane is a really good coach, but he doesn't. He hasn't won anything when you think about it. The Raiders was a mess, USC was a mess, Tennessee was a mess.

And I liken it too. If you've ever lived in New York City, you get an apartment and you immediately start looking for your next apartment because there's always going to be a better apartment. And that's what coaches do. Hey, this is good. Wait what's he getting? Wait? Is that going to be open? And that's what Lane does. LSU's not gonna be his final stop, but that's just who he is. He's always going to be on the move. But I'd love to have a camera on Lane Kiffin tonight as he watches this game. Yeah, ton so in a purely honest moment.

Well, this is this is the new college football. All it takes is you know a somebody really rich who wants to help you change the roster. Mark Cuban is helping Indiana. You got a billionaire helping Texas Tech. These kids don't want to stay as the third string quarterback in Alabama anymore. Oregon's got Nike. And as I told you, college source said, you either have oil money or tech money. That's what you need today. And if you're spending fifty million dollars like you've got to keep up with everybody, it's it's close to forty to fifty million dollars and it's not sustainable. And the grownups allowed all of this to happen. Hey, I applaud Brendan Soorsby to get almost six million dollars.

Speaker 2: Todd McShay Draft Expert put out his mock draft and he talked about Dante Moore, the Oregon quarterback, and he was saying, hey, if he was him, nobody wants to play for the Jets. Well, if you're going to be the second pick overall, Now, I would hope that Dante Moore would go back and play a little bit more. Because I've talked about this, I gotta have at least thirty to thirty five starts, maybe even a little more than that, to get a true sense of just how good you're going to be, because too many teams make this same mistake. Hey, that guy had a great season, Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, that's not enough. You got to have at least thirty to thirty five starts in college football. Now, I can go to Bo Nicks, Jayden Daniels, they had over fifty starts and you have that bonus COVID year though, but Dante Moore, should he go back to Oregon? Well, I'm curious the end result of the playoffs. Let's say wins the National Championship. Could he supplant Fernando Mendoza as the number one pick in the draft. It would be really difficult to pass up on that. If you're Dante Moore, and from what I've seen, he looks like he's a really good quarterback. But you know the UCLA situation where you get injured, you're not playing, and then you end up at Oregon. Oregon can make you look a whole lot better than maybe what you are. I mean, Dylan Gabriel, they played a lot again games and they won a lot of games. He's probably a career backup quarterback in the NFL. Bo Nix went to a couple of different places, and you're playing big time football. You know when he transferred to Oregon and he's proven that he's probably a franchise quarterback. Joel Klatt, Fox college football analyst, on the advice that he would give to Dante Moore.

Speaker 12: If Dante Moore called me today and he said, hey, like, what should I do? I wouldn't blink an eye. I would say go back to school, because it's no longer just a financial decision. He can make life changing money at Oregon much less than National Football League.

But I don't see these kids going, hey, I don't want to play for the Jets. Like, get some point the Jets will be a decent team, competitive team. I really feel that way.

But Dante Moore, I haven't seen enough of him where I go, Boy, that guy can't miss, Because it feels like every time I feel like there's a guy who can't miss, he misses. But that's why I go back to give me thirty five starts now, I got a good sample size. But going to the Jets, going to the Raiders, I mean, nobody's saying to Fernando Mendoza, hey, don't go to the Raiders. Well, the Raiders are just as much of a mess as the Jets are. The Raiders had the worst offensive line in football. You don't even know if Ashton gent is going to be great. You know Bowers will be and you might trade Max Crosby. So what do you got do you go to the Jets? Okay, I mean the pressure's on, but it's not like the pressure's on that you got to be great. Hey, you just got to be better than the Giants to start out with. The Raiders are in the toughest, one of the toughest divisions in football, But nobody is saying Fernanda Mendoza, don't go to the Raiders. We know what he can do, and we heard that from Dan Orlovsky. Like the ability to be able to make these decisions at the line of scrimmage, that's the NFL. I don't know if Dante Moore is able to do that. Like Ty Simpson with Alabama, I would say go back, but then Obama might say you know what, you can go, we got another quarterback coming in. That's what happens. It's quick because now you can get a replacement. It doesn't have to be on your roster. You can just put it out there and go, anybody want to play quarterback at Alabama? Here's the price, and then you're going to get a lot of applicants there. It's not like, well, the backup is going to be there. Fernanda Mendoza's brother is his backup at Indiana. They went out and got another quarterback. He's not even guaranteed of getting that opportunity. They're like, no, no, no, we're big time football. Now, we got money. We're going to go out and get another quarterback here. Yeah, PAULI do.

Speaker 3: You think Ty Simpson of Alabama looked at the landscape and said, yeah, I'm the third best quarterback right now, and that's a good position to be in in this draft. I may have to go late first, early second, but the downside is you come back like you said, and you don't get the reins.

He might be the best quarterback in college and then all of a sudden he wasn't And does his name come up at any point? It's quick, man, it's quick. You're really good, you're the guy, and then you are not the guy, or you get injured or the team's not as good, and then you try to come back. I get it if ty Simpson thinks that. And look, you have he's probably had an agent for the last three years. But if you're leaning on people to give you information, and one of my sources has been asked to give information to agents and he doesn't want to do that because he has information that he has to give to teams, not to agents, and the agents want to know, Hey, can you give me a sense? Can you give me a And that's what they that's what they ask, Hey, where do you think best case scenario? Worst case scenario? And do I think Ty Simpson wasn't that long ago where we were talking about maybe maybe late first round. Then all of a sudden you hear he's probably a second day, third day draft pick here and Paul, you're right. You know, if you're the third quarterback, okay, chances are you're going to go a little bit higher than you need to or you should.

I don't know if there's other villains out there, but you know he's coming to town and can't wait for Lsu to play Old Miss in Oxford next year. But six years that seems like an eternity nowadays. But you're always wanting to be ahead of the situation. You're always like that, that seems like it's better than this one. What if I have an eight and five year how many eight and five years can I have before they're going to want to get rid of me? How long can you be on scholarship? I mean, we see this happened. It doesn't take long. It can be a year or two years and all of a sudden we're like, yeah, you know, what I'm trying to move on here, Chris and Syracuse. Hi Chris, what's on your mind?

Their offense moves with such pace and when they throw the ball they get rid of it so fast. I think that will Negate that Miami pass rush. And Dan, I'm echoing what you were saying in the first segment. I totally agree. I don't think lank Kiffen ever dreamed that Old Miss could have made it this far, and if he did, he would have stayed.

But I think that nil is going to end the SEC as we now know, it is a real power conference, simply because five of the ten poorest states in the United States are up the SEC. Texas is the only in Georgia, the only really affluent states. They just don't have the money.

Mark Cuban went to Indiana and he is a multi billionaire, and we thought, man, is he going to get involved in Indiana Indiana sports? And I thought maybe basketball? And now the report comes out that he was helping finance the Indiana football program. And that's all it takes. You just got to get somebody to give you the other money, because the other money separates you.
