It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live here we go listen to. That is Levanon, Kentucky in Marion County. It is ham Days here in Lebanon on an absolutely rainy, stormy day all across the South, including Kentucky. But we are here in Lebanon for what was once voted or is voted one of Kentucky's top ten events of the year Marion County, the Lebanon ham Days. And we are here, great crowd here this morning, especially considering the weather out there here at the gym. What's is this the old Lebanon High School? Is that right? 00:01:04 Speaker 3: They said it was the Lebanon Middle School? For a long time, even in middle school. 00:01:07 Speaker 2: All right. The Clark's Pumping Shop pold lines eight five nine twenty two eighty seven he Vision Audo Glass text machine seven seven two seven four five two five four In this distion sponsored by the t J. Smith Lovus. If you call TJ will make them pay. We are here for Ham Days, which I just had the country Ham biscuit here, and I'm telling you it's worth the trip. Whoever who makes this, who makes these Cedarwood, cedar Wood, big salute to Cedarwood. That's that's absolutely awesome Cedarwood restaurant here. We just had them, and glad to be here. Great crowd, three of my best friends here. We're taking off for Oxford as soon as it's over. Ryan and glad to be here. 00:01:49 Speaker 4: A lot going on. 00:01:50 Speaker 3: Drew and I were here for probably five seconds and already had one of these country ham biscuits. We sprinted in here to get one of them. So they are really really good. They've got a you know, there's got some kind of peach apple cider. 00:02:01 Speaker 2: Beer, a little white uh peach. There's that that's beer back there? Yes, oh not. 00:02:06 Speaker 5: Need a little beer to go with your country ham that's exactly what my do before they get in that car and uh and go. 00:02:13 Speaker 2: Now we're gonna be here. Get you ready for uk old miss. Also as part of ham Days, they have the haybail toss. The six of us are gonna give us our shot. But uh, before we get started, I wanted to you know, we're gonna do this towards the end of the show. I wanted to see how you do it? Okay, right, I wanted to see how you do it. So this is what's your name? Steve? He won last year, right. 00:02:34 Speaker 6: Champion, former champion camp last year. 00:02:36 Speaker 2: But now Steve is gonna show us right here how you do Just go ahead and do it right now, how you do a haybail toss. So for people who don't know how wide is that? You would you say, that's uh what three feet long? Maybe maybe a little more three and a half three and a half feet long and wide? Here he goes, Now this is what we're going to be doing. Okay, you want to like a kicker. He's like a kicker. That's exactly right. All right, here we go south, Paul stack O. Look there's the golf the golf swing. Here we go a twirl. 00:03:10 Speaker 7: L I would not have thought of the twirl. No, the twirl threw me off. I knew where he was going next. And then there was a there was a spin. So he starts with. 00:03:19 Speaker 3: The golf swing, and then he went to the shot put. You know they do that in shot put, They spin around and. 00:03:24 Speaker 7: Here's the former champion. If you want to this is another champ right here. Last year he's won three times. He says he's won three times. He's a big dude. I feel like this is here we go. Now he's let's see what his strategy is. He goes, he goes swing swing. That's a golf swing. 00:03:44 Speaker 2: Wow. All right, so that was also wonderful. Okay, all right, so now we know how to do it. You do that for people at home who couldn't see it. You swing it like a golf club, swing it, and then you spin and throw it like you were throwing like a hammer throw in the in the Olympics. 00:04:00 Speaker 7: I had the pendulum formation there. I was all in on the golf swing. But that little pirouet they did at the end that threw me off. I don't know if I have that next step in my arsenal. 00:04:09 Speaker 4: He threw that about forty five feet. 00:04:11 Speaker 5: I guess right. So what do you think that we're gonna get? You think you can get the thirty. 00:04:15 Speaker 2: Wait, here's another one. I have a strategy that's going to make me win. I already I figured it out having watched it. Now, I see what you're supposed to do, and I'm us. 00:04:25 Speaker 3: They've they've gave us some tips. You know, it's not really where the haybell land. It's the role you get after it lands that can really help you more than anything. 00:04:32 Speaker 2: And I want to think, whoever did this, they gave us a trophy, Patrick get Away or Patrick, thank you very much. This will be a trophy for first place. And the only thing now they can't they're they're practicing on that one. But we have our own because as it goes, the hay falls off of it and makes it to where it won't go as far. 00:04:48 Speaker 4: I'm going last. 00:04:49 Speaker 2: Yes, if I'm nine twenty two eighty seven, we are getting ready for Kentucky and Old miss But before we do that, Marion County, I always ask you do this when we go places, give us the famous athletes from Marion Catty. 00:05:03 Speaker 3: Well, of course it starts with the Epps family Anthony Epps, Michayleeps father son both won state titles here father daughter. Sorry, Elton Scott was mister basketball the year after Marion Kenny won the state title. 00:05:15 Speaker 2: That's right. It's like Utah. People forget like Utah. Keith van Horn was there, but it was the year after he left was the year that they ended up getting to the championship. Except they won this the junior year and then Elton Scott was mister basketball senior y. 00:05:28 Speaker 3: I guess Michayla's teammate kyro Good and she ended up playing at UK and I think they ended up transferring to Louisville played at Louisville. Uh, not an athlete, but I think the turtleman's from here too, right. 00:05:37 Speaker 2: The turtleman action is turtleman. That is he still going. 00:05:43 Speaker 4: I don't think so. 00:05:46 Speaker 2: Going. So he'll still come get your stuff out of your house. All right. That's good to know. Well, but uh so, Mary County Long sports tradition. When we were talking about we've talked about this when we were here before. Long music tradition, like I can Tina Turner played here, Richard Pryor played here, Jamie Fox play or not Jamie FOXX, Sorry, Red Fox was here as well. Long tradition of us blue gown. 00:06:09 Speaker 4: That's right it we played right outside here just earlier this year. 00:06:11 Speaker 2: Long tradition of some great musicians, comedians, et cetera. Played here. Over the years, the. 00:06:16 Speaker 3: Best black musicians in the world played here in Marion County at a couple of the night spots they had here. It was like on the tour they would cross the country and would always stop here in Marion County. 00:06:28 Speaker 2: You can learn more about hen Daz's at visit Lebanon kwyd dot com. And we will be here all day. We are on our way to Oxford or I'm on my way to Oxford for Kentucky and Old Miss the Cats. Now the spread has come down down down the sixteen points. If some money comes in on Kentucky to cover. Lane Kiffin said, this will be one of the best defenses we play all year. He said we will not see a better defensive player all year than Dion Walker. But he said, we're gonna play fast and we're gonna try to wear them down. Drew, do you think that's something that they'll be able to do. It's pretty hard. 00:07:05 Speaker 7: To stop them Stoops even said Kentucky's been trying to simulate this offense, even going back to the summer, not just this week, and it's nearly impossible to do. Brad White talked yesterday about how you can't sub. They play so fast, they play so fast, stuck in there, you're just gonna you're in, like we'll take you out the next drive, but you're committed. Now, a long drive can only last, you know, two or two and a half minutes. But once you're in, you're in and you're committed, and you can't take a playoff because they're just waiting for you to to show a weakness and that's when they hit you with an explosive play. 00:07:34 Speaker 2: That's one of the things when you watch the game, so the way the way Old Miss plays, if they don't sub, then you can't sub basically, and they intentionally wait till they feel like they got you. I was listening to Greg McElroy talk about this yesterday. They wait until they see a defensive group you've put on the field that they think they can exploit, and then they don't sub, so that you're stuck with that group the whole time. And McElroy's as a coach, you have to be extra careful that you don't put play players against Old Miss that can't play against anything, because if you do, you might be stuck with them for five, six, seven plays. 00:08:11 Speaker 3: Very interesting to hear that, and you know they're right. Kentucky's defense is the one thing that could keep them in the game tomorrow. But they got to get off the field on third down. You know, they can't be out there forever. That's what we want to do to them. We want to rap these long, time consuming drives against them to keep their offense off the field. 00:08:26 Speaker 4: That's going to require running the ball. 00:08:27 Speaker 2: They'll have to run the ball. Now. Last year, Old Miss was the fastest team in the SEC and one of the four fastest teams in the country, and we were the slowest team in the SEC and one of the four slowest teams in the country. So this is as big a contrast of styles as you will see in a football game. Will Kentucky on offense be able to kind of impose their will and make it to where they can at least slow down the Old Miss train? 00:08:55 Speaker 7: I actually think, you know, Stoops and Kiffin are gonna be battling for who gets control of the tempos he came up on that Iowa football. He wants to get down to a crawl run it played field position game. I actually think with Kentucky's defense, at least early in the game, I think ole Miss they've played four not very good teams. 00:09:12 Speaker 2: They've all been blowouts. 00:09:13 Speaker 7: I think Kentucky's defense might hit them in the mouth a little bit and it might be low scoring early and Stoops might get that tempo he'd prefer. I just worry about that holding up for four quarters because if ole Miss scores a couple times, I just don't have a lot. 00:09:24 Speaker 2: Of Well, that's the thing. We can't fall behind, because I don't if we fall way behind, I don't. It's hard to see us having to play catch up. It's hard to see us having to throw the ball a lot and be successful. You know, after my comments about the crowd, which were now in the newspaper, they were literally in the newspaper yesterday, the Clarion Ledger did a story about my crowd comments, which absolutely blows my mind. I do think that I've heard through the grapevine that some people think Kiffin might send out those comments today. If he does that, then I'm going to consider that the the epitome of success. 00:10:02 Speaker 7: If there's a coach that'll call off the media or have some fun on Twitter, it is Lane Kiffin. 00:10:06 Speaker 6: So that would be fun to watch. 00:10:07 Speaker 2: But the thing is, we cannot let them get up early because we ryan we will not come back. If we're down seventeen, that game is over because of the way they play. But if we stay in it and they start pressing, I think that's where you can have. 00:10:20 Speaker 3: Yeah, you said it, they're they're we are not built to have it come from behind if we trail by a bunch of points, where our offense is just not built for that right now. On the other hand, if they get up by a couple of touchdowns, that's that's tough. That's put the nail on the coffin. 00:10:34 Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the kind of thing that conspiral. Once they get a little. 00:10:37 Speaker 7: Momentum, get on your crowds going, it can end up being a blowout real fast. 00:10:41 Speaker 2: Now, couple a piece of news that I think is unfortunate and I'm a little and I you know, we'll see if it ends up being the case. They released the injury report, running back Chip traying them is out he was expected to potentially play, and now he's out. And I heard, and this is a this is a I would say scuttle butt, not scoop, But I heard he is considering and may even be having a surgery that could put him out for the year, that would allow him to potentially come back and play. But you know, they're kind of making the decision is it worth it now if he keeps missing games. This was a huge piece of what we kind of were hoping to do if that ends up being the case. And again, I don't know for sure. He's definitely out this week, but I think there's a chance he's out potentially for the rest of the year. If that happens. Luckily, our running backs have stepped up, but it would still be a big loss and we would be razor thin at the position. 00:11:40 Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, coming in he was gonna be RB number one and they were. Remember the early scuttle butt was he could be back potentially for the South Carolina game. So each week this has gone on, it does make you wonder, man, is it worse than we all thought? Worse than maybe what they thought. But it makes that running back room even thinner. It was thin to start with even thinner with him when he's out. 00:11:58 Speaker 2: I would I mean, right the thing, Drew, I would understand the decision if he ends up if he's missed five games, assume he's missing the old miss game. If he missed five games, we're two and you know, say we lose, we're two and three. I would get it. But that really stinks because I mean, if you talk to people on the staff, they think that dude can be great and is great, and not to have him all year would be the worst. Yeah, so far. 00:12:22 Speaker 7: I don't think you can ask the current running backs and played to do much better, but they can't be expected to do that for an entire season. They need him back. He kind of adds a different, you know, way of playing. He's got a little more strength and high runs and the other two, so it brings you a little more versatility. It stinks if he's out longer term, because as Ryan just noted, we were hoping that him back week two or three, and to just think to play an SEC schedule with it would be with three running backs to him or freshman. That's that's a big ask. 00:12:48 Speaker 2: I mean, this is a guy, like if you were asking me at the beginning of the year. How is Kentucky good? I mean, he was a huge part of it. He was a huge part of it. And to not if we if we don't get him at all at any point, that would be disappointing. A nine two twenty two eighty seven. We want to take your calls. Uh, Shannon, I have to tell you something. Yesterday, Billy is very offended. He is very offended that we think he's going to come in last. And yesterday he said to me, there's no way he's coming in last. No way, no way. He's shaking his head right now. No way he's coming in last. To me, I think the odds are on him coming in last. Will you how much will you make fun of him? If he does come in last. 00:13:32 Speaker 5: He'll never live it down, he won't. I know that he's been picked last. And like every poll that we do, I understood stand that. Yesterday there was another. 00:13:41 Speaker 2: Yesterday there was a poll on the text machine who has the best radio voice of the group, and they ranked them. Shannon was number one, which I think is fair. Drew was number two. I was three, Ryan four, and then Mario five and Billy six. He now even comes in last on the radio voice. I feel bad for him. He finishes at the bottom of every pole. 00:14:05 Speaker 5: Well, Billy, I know he's been watching YouTube videos. He's doing everything that he can in preparation to not finish last in this competition. 00:14:12 Speaker 2: We'll see the spin adds a new thing. I didn't know you were supposed to spin. So I think you all sitting in the back row better watch. Yeah, you might be in the go anywhere. You might be in the fly zone eight five nine two, eight oh twenty two eighty seven. When we come back, I want to talk a little bit about not just the game tomorrow, but the Mark Pope philosophy we talked about. I had a conversation last night that kind of expanded a little bit on something I said earlier this week. And we'll get you ready. We are here at ham Days with the best ham in the state of Kentucky. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Water'm back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Here live at ham Days in Lebanon. They got all kinds of things. There's a concert tonight, yeah at Angelic Hall, brought to you by the good Buddies Brewing. Another concert Saturday night in downtown levinon hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow night. They also have a pokey pig five K? Is that on? Pokey Pig five K? I don't know what that means, but I like it. I figure that, But there's a lot of other festival type things going on. What person writes on the text machine seven seven two seven seven four five two five four Matt, I love the show, been listening to it for nine years. But if we lose on Saturday, I'm blaming you because you got that crowd fired up. You shouldn't talk trash before games. If Old Miss needs me to pump them up, then they got other problems. I don't think we had What do you want? As I said the other day, what do you want me to do? Not say what I feel like, Old Miss. If your ranking stadiums Old Miss is behind, is ahead of Vandy and then that's it. Maybe Missouri. Maybe they're ahead of Vandy in Missouri and that's it. Missouri does have a petting suit, so I mean, it's just being honest. Now. I do think they'll be loud tomorrow because they're good, But in general, I think we should be able to handle the environment. 00:16:03 Speaker 3: Oh Miss is one of the top five top six teams in the country. They shouldn't need a blow hard. Radio Chills called me a blowhead. 00:16:10 Speaker 2: You don't need to be calling me a blow hard. That's not that's I mean, I didn't ask you if I was a blow hard. I mean, you know, in the nicest of ways, talking head, talking head. 00:16:19 Speaker 4: Yeah, there we go. 00:16:20 Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think that was uh, that was very nice at all. If I'm nine, uh two eight oh twenty two eighty seven, I just had another person, Drew write me and say the information I'm saying about Chip training them, uh is very likely correct. So I hope that's I hope I'm wrong, but that would be that would be bad news. That stinks. 00:16:38 Speaker 7: Those guys have done a great job stepping up with them out so far. But like I said a moment ago, you can't ask him to do that an entire year. And if you were to have another injury to that group, you're looking down to two scholarship players. If you know, Patterson even just missed a game recently, so you're already kind of two as it is. 00:16:53 Speaker 2: Well, person right's mad if he if training him doesn't play. What happens on the nil money. That's a good question. I don't know. I mean, I give it back. Well, it's a private company, like you know in the NFL. If you get hurt, you still have to you still get paid, right. I don't know what happens if you get hurt with the Collegeenile deal. I don't know that it's a It's a very good question, but I don't know the answer. 00:17:21 Speaker 5: We just put him on the sideline and wrap him up like a NASCAR and that way, at least he's like got some use. 00:17:25 Speaker 7: For this holding, Like, you know, that's interesting with him. You're gonna want him back, so keep paying him. 00:17:32 Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a really good question though. I mean, if you bring a kid in and it's a I don't know how much his was, but it's a million dollars, let's say, and they never play. 00:17:41 Speaker 4: Easiest million you ever make. 00:17:43 Speaker 2: That's a really good question. I don't know. If I'm nine, two eighth, twenty two eighty seven, who's up first? Clay is up first? Clay, go ahead, Clay. 00:17:52 Speaker 4: Clay, Hey man, I said it. 00:17:54 Speaker 6: I said it before and I said it again. We're the best team in the nation. 00:17:58 Speaker 4: Uh, where are our way. 00:18:00 Speaker 2: To at one? Are you talking about it football? 00:18:04 Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I'm talking about football. 00:18:05 Speaker 2: We are, ok, gotcha, and we we. 00:18:08 Speaker 5: Will beat this team, probably by forty if not thirty. 00:18:12 Speaker 2: No, God, I like I will say this, Clay if we win. If we win, check my social media. If we win, I'm setting up my postgame show on the grove with the speaker and letting everybody there hear about it because I already have a place. So if we win, you look and I'll tell you the place and we'll be there talking a little trash. 00:18:32 Speaker 4: Yeah, Lan Kiffin can run, but he can't hide. 00:18:35 Speaker 6: That's all I'll say. They can be fireman, but not us. 00:18:36 Speaker 2: This is football. What is the case? Appreciate it? Chip, It is the case. They've not played anybody. I mean, if you look at their schedule, they haven't played anybody. This will be their first taste of Ryan, a real team, and we'll see what happened. 00:18:51 Speaker 3: Yeah, it's their first SEC game. They haven't faced an SEC defense yet. But tell you what, if Kentucky wins and you do that postgame show from the grove, that'll be one. That's why your best all time troll moves you'll ever do. 00:19:02 Speaker 2: If seriously, if we win, that postgame show. It's gonna be epic levels of trolley because I'm I'm I'm gonna look at all those fancy people and just say to them, one by one, do you realize how much? And luckily I got three friends that hopefully keep them from beating me up. 00:19:19 Speaker 4: That's your security, that's your crew. 00:19:21 Speaker 2: That's the security crew right there. 00:19:22 Speaker 7: Wow, walk up, drink out of their champagne flute and start doing the show right there. 00:19:26 Speaker 6: Maybe barstool MENSI will come by. 00:19:28 Speaker 2: Yeah, that the barstool guys into it too. Channing the White Sox, they went and one again. Oh man, they win one again. So now they've won three in a row. They once again had a ton of home fans come to see him break the record, and then they win won the game again. Nobody's so now they have three games left in Detroit. It's at Detroit. Detroit's playing for the playoffs. Troit's playing for the playoffs. But the White Socks, what if they win out? What if they win their last seven games to keep them from breaking the record. That would be a really exciting thing for him. 00:20:02 Speaker 4: I'm thinking about poor Detroit. 00:20:03 Speaker 5: If you don't make the playoffs because you just lost to a team with thirty eight wins on the year, and you got swept, and you got swept by them, So you know, I hope they lose. 00:20:12 Speaker 4: I think I'm with the White Sox fans. I want them to lose. 00:20:14 Speaker 2: See I'm kind of pulling for him. I think it'd be kind of cool that, like all year long, they've stunk and they knew was seven games left, we can't lose again, and then they go right and they win every game. I would like that. 00:20:25 Speaker 3: They turn it around, and you know, the three games sweep of the Angels means the Angels, will they ever get on pace to have the worst record in their franchise history? Now they do. They had their work go so Chicago. Now they can save that. They now made California have their worst season ever. 00:20:39 Speaker 2: I also saw it, by the way, their announcer, I think his name is Steve Stone. Those of you that are younger or those of you a little older might remember he used to do the Cubs game track when it was on wgn WH when you were a kid. Steve Stone is the White Sox announcer. He re signed for five more years yesterday, which I thought was fascinating. And after you've been through that, awfulness to sign up to Drew do it for five more years is amazing. 00:21:06 Speaker 7: Probably easy games to call. Nobody's listening to whatever he wants. That's exactly what stress free job. 00:21:12 Speaker 2: True. 00:21:12 Speaker 7: Nobody really just flipped from the Cubs to the White Sox. 00:21:14 Speaker 4: I mean, that'd be like Harry Carrey going from the Cub. 00:21:16 Speaker 2: Well, no, but Harry Carey started with White Sox, Harry Carry started with the Cardinals. Harry, so he went to a rival too, he started with the car Remember Drew Dener started with Kentucky and went to Louisville. 00:21:28 Speaker 4: Yeah, but this is cross town rival. I mean saying Cago. 00:21:31 Speaker 2: Went from the Cardinals to the Cubs. That was pretty hue. 00:21:33 Speaker 6: Harry Carey and. 00:21:35 Speaker 2: Harry Carry Andrew Dener basically the same person. Who's up next? Up next? Joe, Go ahead, Joe. 00:21:42 Speaker 8: Thanks a lot. Matt, Well, Matt, you're you're not going to be the reason why Mississippi wins or loses this game tomorrow. But the Good Lord gave us a big break. 00:21:51 Speaker 2: Matt. 00:21:51 Speaker 8: I don't think it's supposed to be that hot down in Oxford, And in fact, I think it's supposed to be hotter up in South Bend, Indiana than Mississippi. 00:21:59 Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's gonna be it's gonna be damp. I don't know if it's supposed to rain during the game, but it's gonna be damp and it's gonna be cool. I do agree with you. We got kind of a break on the weather. 00:22:10 Speaker 8: And my last point will be when the special teams a part of the game tomorrow. In other words, let's go with that kid that can punt the ball sixty yards and let's just hope we can win the game on our last second field goal and watch Lane kip and crawl all the way back to the locker room. 00:22:27 Speaker 2: Well, I think if we're gonna win, I appreciate the call. If we're gonna win, we need like a berry on Brown kick return or or a maclan punt return. We're gonna need something like that, Ryan, if we're gonna end up breaking and getting the victory. 00:22:39 Speaker 3: Yeah, big special teams play. Maybe a bock kick, maybe score or something. 00:22:43 Speaker 2: Yeah that he counts. Yep, there's gotta be something, because you gotta remember we played Georgia right there, and if we had one of those, we win a game. Yep, we just didn't end up having one during the course of it. We'll take a break. I'm gonna talk a little basketball. 00:22:55 Speaker 4: We returned. 00:22:56 Speaker 2: It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back, Tekey Sports Radio here live at ham Days, practicing not allow he's not allowed to throw. Do not let him throw? Look at this. I don't even like this, but he's not he's not allowed him to throw. A couple shouts out first of all to the guy with the KSR shirt back there, Yeah, shout out. And then we had this person right here a minute ago that had our twenty fourteen KSR Tour T shirt. 00:23:25 Speaker 7: Where did he go? I saw him too, where he went to the bathroom? That is like an old school. That's a ten year old T shirt. I used to have like dozens of them in the back of my car. And I think we ultimately gave. 00:23:36 Speaker 2: Him away, to gave him away to a shelter. But I like seeing that shirt. 00:23:40 Speaker 4: Was that the first year that we went on a full fledge? 00:23:42 Speaker 2: I think we did one the year before. I think we did twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen, but he had the that was what that? Yeah? There it is right there. KSR Radio summer tour t shirt right there. 00:23:52 Speaker 7: Also this kid back against the wall owns me. He walked up, saw my tightened shirt and said, hey, your football team sucks. 00:23:57 Speaker 6: Walked away. So that kid in my head right now. 00:24:01 Speaker 2: One person writes Matt, how many times over under two and a half do our players cramp so that we can get off the field and change lineups? I would say, over, you're gonna see. I make your prediction. You're gonna see a lot of times that one of our guys go down and like ah and does a soccer player thing. We I don't know if people remember we did that a lot two years ago at Oh Miss, so much so that their crowd was booing. We will definitely do that they we did a lot last time. 00:24:28 Speaker 7: It's that Southern heat. You know, they don't give us enough water, enough pickle juice. It's not that we're faking it. It's just a it's a place where you cramp up. I expect it to happen again tomorrow. 00:24:37 Speaker 5: That's the football equivalent of the flop. I'm surprised they don't. I mean, I know it's hard to tell. 00:24:41 Speaker 2: Well, you're supposed to you if you fake and they know you fake. It's supposed to be a penalty. It's just hard for him to call because Ryan, you don't know for sure if they did it. 00:24:49 Speaker 3: Yeah, and hopefully they're a little sneakier than looking over to the sideline standing up and all of a sudden just drop all. 00:24:54 Speaker 2: The thing like when a god just goes, oh yeah, come on, and they've done that before. I want to talk basketball here second, before it go the phones about Pope. You may remember earlier this week I was talking about his his recruiting philosophy and what he said to me in in the meeting about the philosophy and I and I want to expand on it just a second because I think for fans, especially in places like here, you know where Anthony Epps played, Uh, I think it's I think it's what our fans want to hear. But basically, you know his Here's exactly what he said to me when I asked him, I said, how are you how are you going to decide who to recruit? And he said, well, I'm going to try to get the absolute best players that I can get. He said, but I have a vision that in this sea of ni l Kentucky can be a place that sets the standard on what this on what college basketball should be. And what he said was basically, we will have the same amount of nil as everybody else, but we will not sell it based on Denile. We will sell it based on Kentucky. We will say, if you come here, these will be the best years of your life. You will play for this fan base, and yeah, the money will be what it is, but you will also have this special spot in a particular place. He said, I want guys to go to the NBA. He said, I hope they go to the NBA, but I'm looking for guys who have the vision of wanting to play college basketball at Kentucky. And he said that won't be everybody. There'll be guys who that's not the thing. And he said we will end up not recruiting them. But he said in this I think was his quote, I want Kentucky to be an oasis that is different than everything in college basketball. Takes the best parts of the new era and the old era, and that's what we do. So my question for you is it sounds great. Do you think that can work? I mean, clearly it's already worked, because he got two recruits since I said that, But do you think that can work? 00:27:00 Speaker 3: Gonna say, he's already off to a good start with Jasper Johnson and Malachi Marino, getting two guys that understand the culture and they want to play and be a part of that culture here. 00:27:07 Speaker 2: But they're from here, so that's a little different. 00:27:10 Speaker 3: So now again he's got to go out and he's got to get these five star, high profile guys in Indiana, North Carolina, wherever they're from, and get them to convince to sell them on that idea that you're talking about. 00:27:19 Speaker 2: But do you think he can drew Because this is you talk to high school re curuise more than I do, not as much as you used to. But do you think kids will we'll buy into that? Do you think kids will say, hey, that is a special place, not just a place that can get me to the league. 00:27:35 Speaker 6: I have concerns. 00:27:36 Speaker 7: I mean, there will be some, but I just I don't know how much a sixteen seventeen year old kid growing up and you name it that's not Kentucky, Chicago, wherever. I just don't know how much appreciation they're gonna have for the past. I hope, I hope it works. And I like that he's trying it. I just don't want to sound like you know kids today, but I just I just don't know how big a pool of talent there is out there that understands what it means to be a Kentucky. 00:28:00 Speaker 5: I like Pope's philosophy in theory, but in reality, I don't think you're gonna get the best of the best because they're gonna go where the money is. 00:28:07 Speaker 4: And that's just the world that we live in. 00:28:08 Speaker 2: And what about I mean, I think his point is what if the money is equal? Okay, so let's use Jasper Johnson as an example. When Kentucky was first going after Jasper Johnson, I think the money that they were offering was significantly less than Alabama and North Carolina. Matter of fact, I think it was like half, and in the college basketball world, there was this concern of how does Kentucky think they're gonna get players if they're literally offering half the money. Then, from what I understand, the money got they still didn't end up I think he still would have made more money with Alabama or North Carolina, but they ended up getting to a point where they could do it. And I think the being at home Bean for Kentucky made up the gap in that money. Do you think that can work. 00:28:56 Speaker 5: If you're competitive, if you're neck and neck with another school, that's all so recruiting this player. I think that the tiebreaker can go to Kentucky's history. Yes, the fan base and the fan base, absolutely. 00:29:08 Speaker 2: But I will say this. I remember Vince Merrow telling me as he was going into recruiting in his third year at Kentucky. He said, for the first two years, I was able to recruit based on what we did at Miami or what we did at Florida State, what, et cetera. He said, Now we got to do it here. I do think there's a sense Drew like he's gonna be able to recruit on the history of Kentucky some of the players in the NBA, but after a year or two, it'll be based on what he does here as coach. 00:29:35 Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know, we talked to kids. 00:29:38 Speaker 7: They barely remember John Wall, they said, they barely remember John Wall. So Pope's idea of what Kentucky is I just worry these kids don't even know what he's talking about. 00:29:47 Speaker 2: Well, I mean not to always say it to Mario, but we were driving when we were going to Green Bay. I was talking about Tayshawn Prince. Mario said, Tayshawn Prince went to Kentucky's. 00:29:57 Speaker 7: So when Pope's talking about the nineties, high school kids just don't know what he's talking about. 00:30:01 Speaker 2: But I think part of the reason was a young generation of fans was raised to believe that no one played at Kentucky before John wall. I mean part of what Cal did was Cal sold Cal and Cal players. I bet you Cal mentioned Derek Rose more on the recruiting trail than he mentioned Ronda, for instance, and I think it was because that was the way he sold it. Now it's going to be up to selling the bigger picture, and we'll see if he's able to do it. So far, it looks pretty good. Who's up next? Caleb is up next? Caleb? Go ahead, Caleb. 00:30:37 Speaker 9: Hey, guys, I called in for a football comment, but I guess my thoughts on everything the basketball is. I think definitely the pool of players that will be sold on Kentucky as the ideal is probably lower than like money and get into the pros. But I also think because Pope won't do all freshman like Cal did, I think it won't matter as much because that transfers or guys. 00:31:02 Speaker 2: I actually think that's a really good I think that's a really good point because we're not I mean cal, if he didn't get good freshmen, then we weren't good. If you go back and look at the years Cal was here, when we got elite freshmen, we were really good. When we didn't, we weren't because of the fact that you can get the transfer portal. I completely agree, you might not get all the top guys, but you can make up for the difference in the portal. I think that's a big it's an important point. Yeah. 00:31:30 Speaker 6: Uh. 00:31:30 Speaker 9: And then my football comment was so two years ago when we played on Miss. You know, we were coming off our ten win season. We started four to zero and then we were about to beat on Miss and then you know, I don't want to harp on it, but we had the whole penalty at the end that took away the touchdown. You know, I'm not a very superstitious person, but I think we got cursed and we have not been the same since then. The next game we lost to South Carolina, which was the first street. So I'm ready for us to go down this weekend. And break that curse and get back on the right track. 00:31:57 Speaker 2: I think, you know what, I think that's actually a really good point. I appreciate the call. If you remember going into that game against Old Miss, we were I think undefeated, right, we were four and oh man, we said, yeah, yeah, we're four and oh we go in, we get up, we get up, we come back that when we get up, then they take the lead, we come back and we thought I remember when we thought we scored when day he taught that, and in my mind I was thinking five and o South Carolina Vandy six and oh, seven and oh we could go into the Georgia game seven and oh, and then we lose that game, and then we lose to South Carolina and we lose to Vandy. There is a sense that this kind of minor slip over the last two years kind of did start down there. 00:32:41 Speaker 7: Yeah, were really I wrote about this week. But there's three plays the last three times we've played them, two times ago and Lexington we missed an extra point in overtime. Kentucky scored first and overtime, but is the extra point, scores hits the extra point and before that, five seconds left, they throw a fade to DK Metcalf is not an NFL star, and he catches it on top of Lonnie Johnson. He just doesn't catch that ball. I mean, we're looking at could be three and zero for Kentucky in the last three games, but it's zero and three and it's been three individual moments in all three games that flipped it. 00:33:13 Speaker 2: I will say this, unlike the Georgia game, in which I think they out talented US at a lot of positions, I don't really think Drew that old miss out talents US. They have a quarterback that's better. They have some good players, but their talent is not infinitely better than ours, Like say Georgia or Alabama when we play there. 00:33:34 Speaker 7: Their quarterbacks a star and he deserves the attention he's getting. It's just so hard to gauge them as a team because they have one of the best run defenses right now in the country too. 00:33:42 Speaker 2: But it's just but they haven't played it. 00:33:44 Speaker 7: I mean, their stats they lead in so many categories, it's silly. 00:33:47 Speaker 6: It's just hard to tell what exactly they are played a real opponent yet. 00:33:52 Speaker 2: Yeah. UKFCU is there for you, supporting students and teaching good money management. It is UK Federal Credit Union UKFCU dot org. When we come back, we're gonna set up and have our first two people throw. Who should go first? I'm gonna say Ryan and Mario. Okay, Ryan and Mario will throw first. Right up here. We'll get somebody to say where they are our first two throws when we return. This is Kentucky Sports Radio, Lin at ham Day's Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Come on, welcome back here live at ham Day's. All right, So here's what we're gonna do. We got our first two throwers. We're gonna have Mario and Ryan go first, and then the rest of us will do it later in the show. We have Steve here, who won last year, right, not last year. 00:34:47 Speaker 4: It's been a little while, been a little while. 00:34:49 Speaker 2: Okay, old g winner. That's right, an og winner. You're gonna commentate before Mario does his throw. Tell me what should we be looking for here to have an epic throw? 00:34:59 Speaker 10: So so my technique and most people about the saying, we're about two steps off the line, we get a couple nice little practice swings, sort of like golf swing, and then we're gonna spin in a big crow hop and let a rip. 00:35:13 Speaker 2: Mario, do you already have in your hair? Is that something else? Lots of it, Mario, Mario worried about his hair. Already had hay in his hair. Okay, now you got it, Mario. Everyone Drew is gonna get two throws. Okay, so one to get your bearings. The farthest throw will be the one that counts. Mario, Please take your first throw. Here we go. He swings back from Long Island, New York, all the way to Marion County. Oh no, oh my goodness, Mario. Alright, that's okay, everybody. 00:35:49 Speaker 6: I think he saved the throw. 00:35:50 Speaker 7: There was a stutter step that threw off his rhythm, but the arms carried it quite a bit. 00:35:54 Speaker 2: I mean, he had a pretty good rhythm and then he just sort of stopped. 00:35:57 Speaker 6: I don't I was worried about an A C L situation there. 00:36:00 Speaker 2: Right now here's Ryan Lemon. Ryan Lemon is I think Shannon a sneaky favorite. 00:36:04 Speaker 4: Oh yeah, he's got old man he's got old man strength. 00:36:07 Speaker 10: Steve what do you think here? Well, strength is very important. It is as you see. The past winners are all big dudes. You but it's big time. It's big time technique, man. 00:36:17 Speaker 2: Big time technique. All right, Ryan, your first throw is ready. Here we go, swinging, swinging. His tongue is out. He went. He faulted. He went over the line like three feet. 00:36:32 Speaker 6: Wow. 00:36:33 Speaker 2: Don't clap for him, don't clout. That's a fault over the line. We didn't consider Ryan could come in last because he doesn't follow the rules. 00:36:40 Speaker 6: Dude, All right, listeners at home, that wasn't a small fault. He's out three feet over the line. 00:36:45 Speaker 2: All right, Mario, you get one more chance. How about Ryan Lemon Shannon breaking the rules on throw number one? 00:36:51 Speaker 4: He is a habitual cheater. 00:36:53 Speaker 5: It doesn't surprise me at all that he would come out here and try to get a competitive edge by cheating and going over the line. 00:36:58 Speaker 2: All right, I'm halfway down the court. All right, Mario is gonna go number two. He has set a standard. Right now, Ryan is in last. Uh, Mario is going to try again. Let's see if he does it more smooth this time. 00:37:08 Speaker 10: Spin on it, Mario. 00:37:10 Speaker 2: Here we go, spin Mario, Mario doing his swing from Long Island, New York. 00:37:14 Speaker 6: Look at spin. 00:37:15 Speaker 2: Look at that? Wow, better well done. 00:37:18 Speaker 6: I'd say that spin added five feet six. 00:37:20 Speaker 10: Feet, maybe more than that. 00:37:22 Speaker 2: I can see where got the lip too. 00:37:24 Speaker 4: So that red line is where we need a beat right now? 00:37:26 Speaker 2: Yeah, No, he's he's got it right there. Will Ryan be able? Will Ryan be able to throw one that counts as of now? As of now he is in last place with zero, with zero whatevers. 00:37:41 Speaker 7: You know that's got to be in the back of his head that normally you have the freedom to launch, but he's got to be thinking about a double fault here. 00:37:47 Speaker 2: Yes, and unlike Mario, he doesn't have to worry about getting the hay in his hair. I think that's not as much of a. 00:37:53 Speaker 4: Problem Mario, I think got in his head a little bit. And now it's a riological steve. 00:37:58 Speaker 2: I'll let you take this one, okay. Can we just talk. 00:38:00 Speaker 6: About the guns, Ryan Brunt this event. 00:38:02 Speaker 11: Here we go, go for it. They're all fire and blanks. He's gonna watch that line. He's gonna file a fault again. No, he's safe. 00:38:14 Speaker 2: I think he's say the judges saying, say. 00:38:16 Speaker 6: All right in his food must have been over it, because that looked to be on. 00:38:20 Speaker 2: Is he farther than Mario? He is farther than Mario. Ryan Leman takes the league. 00:38:27 Speaker 5: You're lucky we didn't do one toss only, otherwise you would be just qualified. 00:38:31 Speaker 6: Yeah, I need to see a replay. That looked like it was on the line from my angle. 00:38:34 Speaker 2: All right, let's go ahead. Let's do number three. Shannon, you're turn. Oh we got a photo. Wait a minute, Wait a minute, we have a photo on the line. Ryan Lemmon is a crow. I don't know his heel is out. 00:38:48 Speaker 7: Saying it looks like it's above. The question is did that ever come down or did he stay on his. 00:38:52 Speaker 2: Now, wait a minute, is the rule that he has to you can't cross it or your heel can't be over. I'd give that to him. All right, we're giving it to get the throw. That's a controversial. Here goes Shannon. Let's go Mario. 00:39:06 Speaker 6: A picture of that. 00:39:06 Speaker 2: Shannon with his first throw, he he does look like he's got a Look at that backswing. That's a golfer backswing. Oh foot fault, oh last place, another fault. Last. But even if he had not faulted. That was amazingly poor. 00:39:22 Speaker 7: I don't know what I'm talking about, but I think he threw it a little too high, hang down, a little flop shot. 00:39:27 Speaker 2: You need to get way, man. You have to use the same one. We can't use different ones. We have to all use a regulation. Hey, Bail, I love how competitive list. If I'm gonna come in last, I need to make sure I know what all right, Shannon, here we go. 00:39:40 Speaker 7: I didn't get by the way. I want to go on the record as Billy went, yeah the blackler. 00:39:46 Speaker 2: Here we go. Shannon goes up. He is did he pass my. 00:39:53 Speaker 6: He got a good bounce? 00:39:54 Speaker 2: Wow? Is he in last place? It was a good bounce. Did Shannon get in last place? Did you? 00:40:01 Speaker 4: Did you guys vote? 00:40:02 Speaker 2: Wait a minute, you didn't put his thing there? 00:40:03 Speaker 7: I just kind of whispered there. I'm right for Billy, but we did not make official pick. 00:40:07 Speaker 2: Oh the first one was farther. Okay, so there you go. So now Shannon is in last. 00:40:14 Speaker 4: Wait a minute, no, my way farther the Mario? 00:40:16 Speaker 2: No it didn't. Shannonhon ov w heavy scammed over here? 00:40:22 Speaker 4: Why did you bell out on the on the spin? I didn't you on purpose. I didn't think it was working for me. 00:40:29 Speaker 2: All right, Well, Steve will bring you back for the second hour for when the rest of us go. Thank you very much. Five. Ryan is the early leader. Shannon the O v W radio heavyweight champion. Last place, I. 00:40:40 Speaker 5: Throw girl men around, not bas of hell. 00:40:45 Speaker 7: I'm dont worried that if Brian this photo we have, that's controversy. 00:40:50 Speaker 2: It's gonna be like the home run. I hit itall. 00:40:53 Speaker 7: Everyone has to assume you just never lowered your heel. A still photo, very controversial. Who's up next? 00:41:00 Speaker 2: Mark is up next? 00:41:01 Speaker 11: Mark? 00:41:01 Speaker 2: Go ahead? And Mark? 00:41:05 Speaker 9: Hey, Hey, oh awesome, try Hey, I'm on speakerphone. 00:41:09 Speaker 12: Will you give me a stay to be on the speakerphone? 00:41:11 Speaker 2: Mark, just talk, go ahead, don't don't narrate your standphone go ahead. 00:41:16 Speaker 12: Hey me, Me and Philip g. 00:41:18 Speaker 9: Rose's younger brother. 00:41:19 Speaker 12: Tim, we're on our way down to Oxford to watch the Cats tear up those rebels. And uh, I just got something to say that I'm always skeptical of when people talk about. 00:41:29 Speaker 9: How good their wings are. 00:41:30 Speaker 12: But my wife and I came into Chaos Bar last week and ordered the wings and those things. I'll tell you what you've got gold in your waitress, Lizzie. 00:41:41 Speaker 2: Well, thank you very much, sir. Be careful on your drive. It's gonna be a rainy one. We're gonna be dealing with it too. We'll see you when we get down there. Uh, driving through the storm here today. Yeah, you and your boys picked a beautiful day. It's a potful Oxford, Mississippi. Well there you go. So we have our early leader boy Ryanan first, Mario and second, and Shannon in a very disappointing. 00:42:02 Speaker 4: Third part, a lot of trash you still gotta go through. 00:42:05 Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a strategy. I'm going I'm going last because I have a strategy that I feel like is going to be very successful. We're gonna take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio Live at Haym Day's
