TGI – Episode 506 “No Guts, No Cory”

Pod Meets World

They say that if a black cat crosses your path, it’s bad luck. But if you’re on a TGIF show and the black cat is Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch… you get sent back in time!

It’s another time travel episode as the gang transports back to the ‘40s to experience WWII, through a bizarre TGIF special event - and possibly the clunkiest theme song transition in BMW history.

We crack the 4th wall for the most “meta” moment of the show so far, and Will’s special connection to the script forced him to put his foot down for the first time ever.

Fight for your country and get ready for a brand new Pod Meets World!

Speaker 1: Where you be at Wrider.

00:00:19
Speaker 2: I'm in Humboldts, the older redwoods along the Eel River.

00:00:27
Speaker 1: Went the Eel River yesterday was so warm. I've never been in a river so warm. Did you catch an eel? No?

00:00:34
Speaker 2: Oh, I just called the eel River. It's not like it's going to be a reason it's called the eel River. I mean somebody was killed by an eel or something. There might have been an eel at one time, you know, but that's like you know, Bear Valley, big Bear mountains, not like there's still one big bear.

00:00:49
Speaker 1: On Boy's World. Lonnie tried to convince somebody to go catch eel in a river. You don't have to scoff at me for never made an eel, though, I mean, have you ever seen an eel and a river?

00:00:58
Speaker 3: Really?

00:00:59
Speaker 4: And there's a il and I've seen it on my plate at sushi me too, I've seen I'm not sure i've but i've seen noy.

00:01:08
Speaker 1: No, I have never been near a river. We're near a river.

00:01:15
Speaker 5: A river?

00:01:17
Speaker 3: What well?

00:01:18
Speaker 2: I've been whitewater rafting a bunch and then I took Indy last year. And no, I've never seen an eel. But we're not we're not rafting. We're just we just have a cabin. We're on our way to Seattle, where I depart for the first cruise I've ever been on since my gosh, this is amazing fiftieth wedding anniversary and they love cruises, So is it? Is it an eel cruise? Eel themed cruise? Just go down the eel river nice, up and down?

00:01:46
Speaker 1: Wait, writer, I really do have a request. Could you create an audio diary while like just into your phone? Okay, just I want you to, like I want there to be the anxiety and a diary of how this is going. Like day one, we are in our room, I have sweat all the liquid in my body out. I just I want to dysentery. Still listening to Counting Cross.

00:02:12
Speaker 3: Still.

00:02:14
Speaker 1: Want that. I think it's going to actually be great.

00:02:16
Speaker 2: I think it's going to be thartic and it's going to feel like I'm overcoming something without having to do anything, because it's the point of a cruise and as long as I can just relax. And the main thing is I think India is going to love it, right, and so like when when I'm gonna be able to sit back and watch my kid having fun, and we're going to Alaska, which I've been to and I love and is wonderful and is not a tropical place with breaches, which is not my style, doesn't feel as culturally as insensitive as you know, some of the issues that I felt in the other cruises I've been on. So yes, the problem is I might not get to go on the cruise because I lost my passport.

00:02:55
Speaker 1: What why you did not? So I'm dealing right now.

00:02:59
Speaker 2: And and now this seemed fine six weeks ago when we were like doing all the travel document like collection and being like oh, and I was.

00:03:05
Speaker 1: Like, where is it.

00:03:06
Speaker 2: I just got back from Banff, like when my wife broke her back, Like what and no idea. So I'm like, okay, don't panic, just report it lost, file for a new one. Report it lost, file for a new one. Should be here in two to three weeks. Yes, the government's great. And then like two or three weeks go by and then I get a letter of being like, where's your old one? I'm like, why file I filed the They never got my first filing with the lost one, so I'm like, anyway, long story shorts still hasn't happened. So now I have to have like one of those last minute emergency passport maybe in Seattle where I'm going. No, I have to go like to the passport an agency so I can just hand them all the documents and they can you know. But I have the worst experience with passports, Like twice I've had I've had to report a mutilated passport because yeah, that's what the technical term. Okay, don't don't leave your passport in your pants pocket when you or your leather jackets.

00:04:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, when you wash it, of course not.

00:04:03
Speaker 2: I was in Spain once in my passport, I can't took it out of the wash and it like peeled apart.

00:04:08
Speaker 1: I can do this. I can glue this back together and no, wow, we are okay, well we're chalking it up.

00:04:14
Speaker 4: We got we don't want to give writers passports, so when we travel internationally, either Danielle or with your information. Also, we don't want to let you drive because we're going to get pulled over. So there's there's two things we know about. We just got to keep checking off the travel guys.

00:04:28
Speaker 1: I know is fun. You know I do have for you though. There's a place locally called same day Passports. And they really can turn it around for you very quickly. Yeah.

00:04:40
Speaker 2: No, I know that there's agencies, and I probably should have just done that because you know, you can just dump a bunch of money and they like cut through the bureaucracy for you, because they just basically like.

00:04:47
Speaker 1: Paid to be in the front of the line. And I've done that way, you know.

00:04:50
Speaker 2: I mean that's how big companies get their executives overseas or actors.

00:04:54
Speaker 1: Into a show.

00:04:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, but I was just like, no, I can do this all normally. I have all the stuff, you know, I am a citizen. Shouldn't be that hard, but yeah, no. And then of course I discovered my parents don't actually have.

00:05:05
Speaker 1: My birth certificate. They have a copy. So now I have I.

00:05:08
Speaker 2: Do like file to get like an emergency copy of my certific copy my birth certificate. So but you know, in the worst case scenario, my family gets to go on the cruise and I take myselfs in my camera van, which also sounds.

00:05:23
Speaker 1: I know either way, I'm kind of like win win. You know, I'm gonna I'll do the work.

00:05:27
Speaker 2: I'll do the work, and I make sure my wife sees me doing the work, you know, yeah, I.

00:05:30
Speaker 1: Was gonna say, how much is Alex going to kill you if you don't get to go on the cruise?

00:05:36
Speaker 2: You know, part of the tension is she's the one who holds our passports.

00:05:40
Speaker 1: Oh so she's the one in there's a little debate. There's a debate.

00:05:45
Speaker 2: I'm not gonna you know, but yeah, she's the one who's in charge of the travel documents when we go, because there's three of us, you know, keep she's the keeper. So but you know, maybe air jacket in the future, can you do that? Are you allowed to stick something to a passport?

00:05:59
Speaker 1: Can you sport? I wonder that's a pretty good idea. Yeah, Welcome to Pod Meets World. I'm Daniel Fisher, I'm rather strong, and I'm Wilfordell. So today we are recapping season five, episode six, No Guts, No Cory. It originally aired November seventh, nineteen ninety seven. The synopsis A magical stray cat uses a time worm to transport Corey and the gang back to the nineteen forties, where Cory is shipped off to fight in World War Two and must leave Topenga behind. Sounds like a rumpus. It was directed by Alan Myerson. It was written by Laura Runnels and Patty Carr. This is their first Boy Meets World script. Welcome ladies. It was cool to see their name. Yeah, yeah, yeah, very cool. We were just two of the two of the Greatest uh So guest starring Nick Baquay as the voice of Salem saber Hagen. I did not know Salem had a last name. I did not either, Yes, Salem saber Hagen the cat. Now, this is a very popular character slash puppet from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Nick was actually a writer on Sabrina who was recruited to be the voice of its most serial character. It was a puppet. Did you think it was real? They trained? You thought they had trained the cat to speak like that? Yes, well, when Debbie Dunning was done scuba training.

00:07:40
Speaker 2: They okay, the animatronics they got it was, Yeah, it was I'm sure was.

00:07:46
Speaker 1: Then next went to animatronics school and then trained the real cat. She you know, puppet. I'm shocked. I'm sorry, I'm sorry to sorry by saber Hagen bubble, I'm sorry. So he was a writer on Sabrina who was recruited to be the voice of its most surreal character and now that'll probably end up being on his tombstone.

00:08:09
Speaker 2: So yep.

00:08:10
Speaker 1: He was also a writer on In Living Color, a producer on the King of Queen's, a show he also appeared on. He wrote Paul Blart too, and he has a very long resume that includes the show Bookie that he co created with Chuck Lorie that is now entering its second season. Do you guys remember the cat being on set?

00:08:30
Speaker 2: Yep? Okay, no, yeah, no, I remember seeing the puppet, the situation and like all the wires going to it or whatever they had to do. I mean, because I you know, I've always been into that that stuff, So I remember watching them do it and thinking how far we've.

00:08:44
Speaker 1: We've got fallen? Fallen or come? Yeah?

00:08:47
Speaker 2: I was, yes, No, it was I remember. I mean, this week was just hard. I just remember being like, what are we doing? What is hastened to our show?

00:08:55
Speaker 1: Yeah?

00:08:56
Speaker 2: You know, but also that's you know, that was just me being you know, I kind of feel that in everybody.

00:09:02
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we're all a little like but you.

00:09:04
Speaker 2: Know, and I don't know how much of that has to do with like quality and as I mean, I think for me, maybe it did because I was always like, what is I never had seen sabrinas, I was like.

00:09:13
Speaker 1: What is this talking cat?

00:09:14
Speaker 3: You know?

00:09:15
Speaker 2: But I it also just feels like our show has been hijacked by something that's not our show. Yeah, yeah, And so I wonder how much of it was just us feeling like we wouldn't have our own thing. It was like, oh, we can't do our normal thing, we have to do this.

00:09:29
Speaker 4: So my guess is when he first come, when you first see the cat, and he says like, oh damn hippies or whatever, it was, family matters probably went back to like the sixties or the seventies, yep. And so he went to every show and it was that that was guys.

00:09:44
Speaker 1: This was probably a git. This was probably like, ooh, all these shows are going to get that special cat from Sabrina. And although we felt like our show had been hijacked, because it had, it was probably a cool night. And for a kids and families watching the fact that Salem was gonna be a ribbon through all four shows was probably really fun.

00:10:08
Speaker 2: And I wonder how the other ones are, Like, I would love to see them, I know, you know, because actually, you know, like our fifties show in retrospect was like great fun and sort of had this like absurdist like humor to it and all these and like, clearly the best parts of this are similar to that, you know, It's like we're riffing on that. So I'm just curious, like how the other ones turned out, Like maybe, you know, maybe this family matters hippie episode was great. I don't know, like, you know, because I don't mind that conceit if you're just going to lean into like the absurdity of it.

00:10:37
Speaker 1: But this episode just didn't quite work for me. But yeah, I just thought they were missing some laughs here. I thought it really could have used. I mean, will I loved this episode, worked everything about it.

00:10:49
Speaker 4: I loved I loved everything about it for completely different reasons.

00:10:52
Speaker 1: I loved it.

00:10:54
Speaker 4: I let myself go it was we were This was the first episode where I felt like, as a asked, we realized how absurd it was and we were just making each other laugh.

00:11:04
Speaker 1: Writer.

00:11:05
Speaker 4: You and I broke one time, Matt Lawrence broke one time. I'm just doing a bad Jim Carrey impression.

00:11:11
Speaker 1: So good though, you're really working, but I me, you're the only one with jokes.

00:11:15
Speaker 2: It's one of those things though, where it was so absurd and ridiculous, and I felt us as a cast realizing it was absurd and ridiculous, so working to entertain each other and because of that opposite me. Definitely, you and Matt. Definitely you and Matt are having fun like I mean it, literally.

00:11:33
Speaker 1: Laughs and then looks at the camera.

00:11:34
Speaker 2: No, he has to look away because I can't know that is like, you guys are clearly having fun like you know. And and even Ben to a certain extent once he's in Paris, I feel like I was like he was kind of I could feel like.

00:11:44
Speaker 1: Oh, this is these guys are but for I.

00:11:47
Speaker 2: Don't know, like I could tell I was just uncomfortable. Oh no, I can tell that too. But for the first time Rusty felt uncomfortable to me, I was like, what are they making? And Rusty and Betsy it just didn't work.

00:11:59
Speaker 1: I was like, no, guys, don't make me do this. This is love it, I don't. I loved it.

00:12:04
Speaker 4: I thought Betsy was funny, I thought Rusty was absurd. Again, it was it was the news radio episodes that they're like, hey, we're going to do one this week where.

00:12:11
Speaker 2: We're on that I wish they had really cranked it up, Like I wish they had cranked it up like tent you know, cranked it to eleven, because like it just it wasn't absurd enough or like melodramatic enough for me.

00:12:23
Speaker 1: It was like someone kind of committed Like.

00:12:25
Speaker 2: That was the problem is like like the Sean Cory stuff is so serious, it's played straight and then like, yeah, we should have made it like we should have all been doing what you were doing right, like if I went and grabbed the dog tags. It was like like if it could have been like if we were mocking a World War two movie, it would have been great, but we played it as if we were really in World War two and happened.

00:12:50
Speaker 4: It was like what I think what they were going for is a boy meets World episode in World War two, which is slightly melodramatic.

00:12:59
Speaker 1: All you know, Corey and Topanga fighting, you.

00:13:02
Speaker 2: Know, it's it's they tried to do a boy me throll that which again, once I let go, I was like, okay, it's once Topang at the very beginning doesn't even mention that there's a cat in the hallway, I'm like, all right, fine, I'm in like she literally doesn't even go hey, cat like nothing like a coal lines and more lines in that direction would have gone a million miles. Like my favorite line of the episode is when Fien He's just like, oh, I guess I can do this because.

00:13:25
Speaker 1: I principle like more of that, do you know what I mean?

00:13:28
Speaker 2: Like just a slightly more like winking asides and I would have been in especially from like me or Rusty. It was like those of us who were playing it straight just like missed the mark. And I guess that's on us, you know, like I totally take responsibility.

00:13:40
Speaker 4: This was also the first episode and I think I think I talked about this at a live show.

00:13:43
Speaker 1: I don't think we talked about this on the pod.

00:13:45
Speaker 2: But this is the first episode where I walked into Michael and said, I won't do it.

00:13:49
Speaker 1: Oh, this is the one right you were supposed to be in it, because I was supposed to be.

00:13:52
Speaker 4: He he had me doing all this absurd stuff while dressed in a military uniform with you guys in the in the bunker, and I went to him and I was like, dude from a military family, I can't, I can't do this. And so they rewrote the entire thing where he has flat feet and doesn't go.

00:14:06
Speaker 2: Did we actually record that though, I mean read that episode like, because I don't.

00:14:11
Speaker 1: I think we did. We think table read?

00:14:14
Speaker 2: No.

00:14:14
Speaker 4: I think after the table read, I was like, I can't do and I think they rewrote the my entire part because it was just this ridiculousness while dressed in uniform, and I was like, I'm not doing this. I'm not And in all fairness to Michael, he was like okay, and they changed it, like instantly changed it.

00:14:28
Speaker 1: And it is so funny that you're on a secret mission and all of it, all of this, all of your stuff, you got all the laughs.

00:14:34
Speaker 4: And you are you are just doing a bad Jim Carrey impression at the beginning. I mean like even the headshakes and like, all right, man, we're gonna It's like, oh my god.

00:14:43
Speaker 1: Intentional do you think? No idea? How do you just absorbed his perform.

00:14:47
Speaker 2: By that point I probably had just absorbed his But as I'm watching and I'm just like, oh man, it's just it's pretty.

00:14:54
Speaker 1: Much like beat for beat. It's like, yeah, back to the guest stars of Saving Private Corey. We have Yvonne show as Versailles. An Italian model and actress Yvonne appeared on two episodes of lefem Nikita. She was in the two thousand and six Pink Panther movie, and in two thousand and five she claimed she was physically attacked by Naomi Campbell. Oh God. Yeah. And then we have Kevin Brief as Maleman. He's one of those Hey, I know that guy, that boy meets world so commonly hired. You've seen him on wings Er, Will and Grace and The Big Bang Theory. And then we have Brooke Mahilani Lee as Dim a dance girl. She's nineteen ninety seven's Miss Hawaii Usa. She was Miss USA and then she was Miss Universe.

00:15:41
Speaker 5: Yeah.

00:15:41
Speaker 2: She was super cool by the way we talked the whole time about Miss Universe and everything.

00:15:45
Speaker 1: She could not have been nicer, so down to earth, so cool. She was the first native Hawaiian to win the title of Miss Universe, and she is now the co host of the podcast It's a Hawaii Thing, and she is the artistic director of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. Cool. So, what did you guys talk about when you talked about Miss Universe?

00:16:05
Speaker 4: What was just you know, because it was all the I mean, I don't remember much, but I just remember we talked about kind of the pageant circuit, because that's the whole thing.

00:16:12
Speaker 1: It's just such a.

00:16:12
Speaker 4: Different I'm always fascinated with these tiny little worlds cultures. Yeah, I saw it with the next girlfriend, who was a championship figure skater, and so you had that kind of little world.

00:16:23
Speaker 1: And so the pageant world is a whole different thing.

00:16:26
Speaker 2: And it's so high stakes, you know, and yet there's it seems like there's not much you can really do. You just kind of have to like go and compete by being Oh my god, it sounds so stressful, it does.

00:16:35
Speaker 4: But she I just remember her being so down to earth. Could not have been nicer. We hung out the whole day. We were laughing the whole time. She was really really sweet, cool.

00:16:43
Speaker 1: And then we have Maurice LaMarsh as narrator slash radio announcer voice MO. That's my boy Mo.

00:16:49
Speaker 4: And also he's a huge voiceover actor and he is one of Bluckman's best friends for years.

00:16:56
Speaker 1: Oh nice. Well, he's one of the most famous voiceover actors ever and arguably the greatest sound alike to ever Live. He's most famously Brain from Pinky in the Brain, with almost five hundred other credits, including thirty episodes of The Simpsons, destro in g I, Joe Foot, Brute in Teenage Mutant, Ninja Turtles, and Mister Big in Zootopia.

00:17:22
Speaker 2: He's also a Kiff and a bunch of other voices in Futurama.

00:17:27
Speaker 1: Wow, oh, lieutenant. Yeah, he's amazing. He's literally him. I think we met him once. Yeah, and you had him do the Brain from Pinky and the Brain voice once.

00:17:36
Speaker 4: One of the greatest guys you'll ever meet in your life. He's a legendary voiceover actor. Yeah.

00:17:52
Speaker 1: So, jumping into our recap, we start in John Adams High Salem. The cat has made the TGIF trip over to our set and is in our empty hallway. Why, we don't know, but he frustratingly says, those darn hippies. They talk about free love. Then they want me to chip in for gas, like I've got a wallet. The camera zooms in on his face as he opens his mouth and says hipocrites. Now we're in Phoene's class, as if that was normal, and mister Phoene is talking about World War two specifically December seventh, nineteen forty one, deciding as dr a day that will live in infamy. Then the bell rings and Phoene thanks the students who brought in family mementos from the war. Pearl Harbor was an event that touched all of our lives. Filing out quoreasques to Panga if he can see the picture she brought of her grandparents from the war. He examines it and says they look very much in love to Pega agrees.

00:18:47
Speaker 2: And now this began the tradition HM of talking about photos or paintings that we don't.

00:18:53
Speaker 1: Get, don't ever see right now.

00:18:55
Speaker 2: Besides Will's wonderful headshot, it's so weird it happen here. And I was like, okay, and I was I thought maybe they would do like you bend like dressed up as the old people. I was like, that would be great or you know, and it does. And then later the Cory photograph as a Ghost was and then the painting.

00:19:10
Speaker 1: Of like we got to see these.

00:19:12
Speaker 2: Things, guys, and they spend so much money on redoing our sets, you think they could have had enough for, you know, at our department to make mock up a photo.

00:19:19
Speaker 1: I don't know. It's so weird to me.

00:19:21
Speaker 4: You think of a time that we would finish a scene or do something and then they do inserts like on like on a film. I can't think of a time where they would come in and push in on something in our hands or you know, I mean.

00:19:32
Speaker 1: Now we do time because it I mean, you never don't do the insert.

00:19:37
Speaker 2: But back in the day, I don't recall them doing like all right, let's get a close of his hands, Like I don't see that ever, I don't remember that happened. Does boy Meet's world ever? Has we done any insert shots or does everything staying at all camera mode?

00:19:50
Speaker 1: That's so funny.

00:19:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think even when back in the season one when he pulls out like the melted Barbie, there wasn't like a shot the melting Well, it.

00:20:00
Speaker 2: Just goes to show because like Danielle saying, you do that all the time now, even a multicam you get at least you just they want the coverage and then they have it.

00:20:07
Speaker 1: They do it if it helps the joke. So it's it goes to show the progression of single cam into the multicamp format because like back then it was kind of just a rule. They just don't. Yeah, you just didn't do it. Yeah, no, you didn't do it. And and if you wanted it, because it was going to help the joke, you strategically place it behind them, like in the Uncle Sam joke. Later the Uncle Sam poster is directly behind your head, so you can you They're like, well, yeah, so interesting. I know. So now it's something for us to pay attention to. Where and where and do you ever get an insert? Okay. Tapanga agrees they are still very much in love, and her grandfather asked her grandmother to marry him. On December seventh, nineteen forty one. Corey perks, up, hey, I know that date. Help me out here. Sean quickly appears Pearl Harbor the day that we'll live in infamy. Phenie was just talking about it. I know it happening. Just give this joke to Sean, Like what you know, I don't know this is or was it a possibility that Corey was saying it to get Sean? Was it a giving it?

00:21:11
Speaker 2: I was just like they just go for the easy dump joke and then the fact that my joke is the one that we've done like the fifteenth Like.

00:21:17
Speaker 1: Oh, I hate it over. Here's the other thing.

00:21:23
Speaker 4: And I never say this because I don't ever call people out of the performances.

00:21:27
Speaker 1: But Ben was phoning it in a little bit.

00:21:29
Speaker 2: This Yeah, this scene, this first scene, he's kind of mumbling happy voice. He was unhappy with the I could tell when he when it goes into the nineteen forties for some reason, this this whole first scene in the hallway, he is very unhappy. He did not want to do like that cheek junk that he does, or that whatever he does to to pay it like there's something going on that he was, Yeah, you can.

00:21:53
Speaker 1: Tell somebody with the dial of the wardrobe. But he I thought he was.

00:21:56
Speaker 2: He came out of it by the time we go to Paris, like then I was here like, oh he's in it.

00:22:00
Speaker 4: Even in the some of the soldier stuff, he's in it. But this first scene he was really it was like, oh, yeah, what's wrong with Ben?

00:22:06
Speaker 1: I I thought while watching it. I remember both Ben and I disliking when our dialogue is literally nothing more than propelling into story, just expositional dialogue. And as you say, the fact that I don't even mention the cat, and then I'm like and back to that topic about my grandparents, which like he picks.

00:22:29
Speaker 2: Up and he's holding a cat and it's not like, hey, cat, So I have a feeling we were like, is there any other way we could do this?

00:22:36
Speaker 1: It may have just been that we were uncomfortable because we felt like there was no real way to commit to it, right, that's the way. Yeah, that's why. I think.

00:22:42
Speaker 2: That's what I remember feeling this whole week, and that's what I read on all of our faces, which is a bummer because you know, I don't know how much of that is on us, or how much of that is the writing I think is watching Will. It's like if you we had just all leaned into the absurdity, but maybe they wouldn't let us because clearly they wanted emotional stakes between Corey and to Pang and Corey and Sean, which is a little weird.

00:23:02
Speaker 1: Like just yeah, I do remember a lot of notes back in the day where we would get an episode like this and we would lean into it, and then we would be told we're doing it wrong. You're playing it as a joke. It's not a joke, play it real. Oh really, you know, like where we would be like, but it's clearly a romp, but you don't play it like a romp. And I was like, oh, okay, and so you we had I do. I don't know. I'm not trying to say that for sure we got that note this week, but I do remember those notes where if we tried to be rompy, we were told that the funniest way to play it is to play it real. So that may have been what was going on here, and we were just uncomfortable. Quite possible, Corey smiles, you listen to Feanne. Sean looks disgusted. Oh my god, I listened to Feanie and he walks away. Corey asks when Tepega's grandparents got married, and she reveals they were their age, which is what sixteen at this point? Yeah, seventeen? Maybe are we supposed to be seventeen.

00:24:03
Speaker 2: In the show?

00:24:04
Speaker 1: Are you seniors now?

00:24:05
Speaker 2: So?

00:24:06
Speaker 1: Yeh yeah, so clear could be close seventeen eighteen. Okay. Corey looks down and sees Salem the black cat at his feet. Rather than utter surprise you'd assume he'd have when a cat shows up in his school hallway, he just picks him up and asks if he's lost to Benga completely ignores the cat, which sure makes sense, and then continues on, my grandpa didn't know if he'd make it home. But that's the way it was back then. People never knew how their lives would turn out. Hell, a black cat may even just show up on your sitcom.

00:24:38
Speaker 2: Also in the future. Now, now, do people know how their lives are going to turn out?

00:24:43
Speaker 1: Yes, I do. Like back then, people didn't know how they're lives. They didn't turn out. You didn't have media.

00:24:52
Speaker 4: Read Thank god we've got those tea leaves, because back then they didn't know what they heard.

00:24:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so funny. A line that sounds like sense, but exactly, Yeah, that's so funny. I didn't. It didn't hit me either until you said it. And then it's like a different than that. It's like three in the morning. We get finished the stratch. Sure he'll do. Corey admits, I don't know how I'd handle living back then. I wonder what it was like during World War Two, and then Salem the Cat enthusiastically declares, and away we go. So again, this probably has already been set up by the Family Matters episode before waiting for it. We're just the audience who's watching is not as confused as we are. Watching now. They're like, oh, here we go and and it all makes sense. But watching it now, it's a little like what is.

00:25:46
Speaker 2: Then we get happening into a trippy camouflage.

00:25:49
Speaker 1: Ye, it's a chimo hole.

00:25:53
Speaker 2: I was I wonder if all the other ones did this too, or keep because we're wars and the hippies would have been like tight I swirls.

00:26:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, but I was like, what is happening? It's a very specific.

00:26:07
Speaker 4: Okay, So this episode apparently aired after an episode of Sabrina called In a Goddess Sabrina, an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch that featured Salem transporting the cast back to the nineteen sixties.

00:26:19
Speaker 1: Okay, okay, so they must have done it. So instead of family matters they started with Sabrina. Yeah, they must. They must have initiate going through so she move her.

00:26:29
Speaker 5: What a shake up to the Actually, I can tell you the four shows that Salem appears on that night, okay, Okay, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, yeah, the World you Wish okay, and teen Angel and all of them are put into wrong decades. O.

00:26:47
Speaker 1: God, that's what it is.

00:26:47
Speaker 4: Okay, all right, well, there's magic on every every single show except boy Mes World in that lineup, aren't they the rest of them magical?

00:26:56
Speaker 2: Because the whole thing was that they you know, it was like when Sabrina hit, it was like kids like the magic. Yeah, so everybody had, you know, that was like the Genie Show is in the next year. It was like they kept trying to make something with a magical element or twist work.

00:27:10
Speaker 1: Wasn't the lead wasn't teen angel? Literally? Didn't that show start with the cute kid who starred.

00:27:16
Speaker 2: In the show dying from a hut from eating like, chokes on a hamburger and dies.

00:27:20
Speaker 1: That's how that show starts. I haven't either, but that's like God, So then he comes back as an angel. As an angel, right yeah, okay, so yeah, we're in that weird camo hole. I described it as a green and yellow tube. We find ourselves back and the John Adams High Hallway, only now it's during the war, and holy we've got ourselves a second time travel episode we're in. We're in now. You can tell we've gone back in time because Corey and Topanga and other passing students are now wearing old timey clothing, and there is a big poster behind them that.

00:27:51
Speaker 2: Read I love it in the fifties episode, but I think it's even better. I think it's like and I mean it's great and everything the kitchen looks.

00:28:03
Speaker 1: Looks so good. It really did. Yeah, I know, I really loved it. I was and that is you know. My one memory of this week was being like, I was born in the wrong decade. I need to be a nineteen forties gal.

00:28:15
Speaker 4: I didn't want to say this, but you do kind of have like forties movie star vibes.

00:28:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, it kind of worked. It works, I know, I really I missed my I missed my calling. Yeah, all right, agreed. Okay, So we have a big poster behind us that reads, by war bonds, we apparently had enough blood.

00:28:33
Speaker 4: Well blood driver, which is ironic because I know during the war.

00:28:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. H So Cory sets down the black Cat and to Panga asks come again. Corey, without hesitation, responds, I said, I'm glad the US of A ain't mixed up in this war because I could never be away from my best gal. To Panga, also now wearing red lipstick, grabs his chin and smiles, I could never be away from you, kiddo. Then Feene, who is ageless and I'm still dressed like modern day Phoene appears from around the corner and he announces the United States has entered the war. May God be with us all.

00:29:08
Speaker 2: Now, drum this is the first of like some really invasive sound music music. Yeah, and like there's a couple of them, but this one, I was.

00:29:16
Speaker 1: Like, yes, drums and trumpets play in the basically fife and drum where where it's like wow, but this happens, you know.

00:29:24
Speaker 2: I was like, Wow, that's a really bold choice, but okay, and then a caps a couple of times later when I was like, oh, guys.

00:29:31
Speaker 1: On the drums. But I think that.

00:29:33
Speaker 2: That was an attempt to save the episode a little honestly, because yeah, save the energy, because I think we all played it to ye straightforward or most of us, sorry Will.

00:29:44
Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to say I certainly you could say a lot about my performance straightforward.

00:29:49
Speaker 1: Understand it. I really really came under the jokes of this one. Sewan immediately turns the corner and tells Corey he's going down to enlist because Uncle Sam wants I walked on. It was like, oh yeah, like carrying books with a belt is one of the coolest things in the world. I was like, I'm going to bring.

00:30:06
Speaker 2: That back to carry five books in a belt, right and like carry them over my shoulder.

00:30:13
Speaker 1: I was like, because this, I actually do have this problem. I still carry physical boots because I refused to use camels.

00:30:18
Speaker 2: And I was like, this is perfect. This just goes with everything about me. I'll just start carrying. But but then, did you notice the way I'm carrying it? Because the way you're supposed to carry it, which I do later, is like over the shoulder. The way I walk around the corner and I yell, it looks like I'm about to hit him in the head with It looks like I'm about to swing.

00:30:36
Speaker 1: That thing right at him. I'm so and I'm like cour and I was like, what am I? Oh, it looks like I'm about to pound him. It's weird.

00:30:44
Speaker 4: But to keep it on brand for you, and when you do bring that back, and I fully believe that you're going to, you've got to hand tool your own belt, which I'm sure is going to happen.

00:30:55
Speaker 2: I got, yeah, you got cut the leather egg, I got to raise the cow first.

00:31:00
Speaker 1: Well, that's we'll get right, we'll get there. Sean admits he wasn't going to, but Uncle Sam was pointing right at him. And then you see that in case you're unfamiliar with the poster, it is strategically placed directly behind him. Uncle Sam saying I want you for US Army nearest recruiting station. Funny joke. Funny joke. I know. Sean's proud to defend his country, and asks Corey in the most suspenseful way possible, will you join us? Corey looks at the Panga, who is sick at the thought. Corey's torn a dilemma of these times that weighed heavy on many a young man. Patriotism and putting your life on the line meant everything. Corey Stair is looking more confused than we've ever seen him. And then when is fo it was so I literally hard.

00:31:58
Speaker 6: When I truly go fad and then had to go back and rewatch it and then insisted we pull the clip because.

00:32:09
Speaker 2: It's just I think the it's I mean, I wonder who made the choice of what decade we get, because having to do World War Two with a comedy is hard, right, And then the decision to make it kind of serious, like I just because.

00:32:25
Speaker 1: Could you make a joke out of all of this stuff?

00:32:26
Speaker 2: I mean, even Will as an actor was like, no, I'm not going to make a joke out you know what they originally wrote. Which might have been part of the problem is that then everybody was on edge about like you know what I mean, Oh, we can't make a joke out of Corey dying or the war because then we're making a joke out of World War Two. So it feels like, yeah, I don't know, like where's the fifties. We could just be like, ah, they thought the bomb was gonna shy yeah, right right, And in this it's like, I don't know, I just wish we'd leaned more into making fun of World War two movies, you know, like there was more like cliches from old movies, and.

00:32:58
Speaker 1: They can't try that. They tried that with clear like yeah, but it's not quite enough.

00:33:06
Speaker 3: Ye yeah. Yeah.

00:33:19
Speaker 1: Then we're into the Matthew's kitchen, still in the nineteen forties, Alan, who appears to be in the Armed Forces, is loosening his tie looking at the paper. So that's it. We ship out tomorrow. Eric and Corey then walk in and Corey repeats his dad's sentiment, So that's it. We ship out tomorrow. Amy, with pin curls and bright red lipstick on, quickly stands up. Oh no, surely the army can make do without at least one of my men. Eric matter of factly states they wouldn't take me. I have flat feet and I'm too ticklish. Apparently I'm a torture risk. Amy is relieved to hear this, and she goes in for a hug, but Eric immediately starts to giggle. I give up, I give up love shirt. Then an air raid siren sound and the entire family stands alert. Feeni runs into the house wearing a helmet and carrying a large bullhorn. It's just him practicing to be the neighborhood air raid warden. He gets to keep the bullhorn if they win. Eric realizes everyone's doing their part in this war, and he wants to help too. He's going back to the recruitment office to tell them a little case of flat feet isn't going to stop him from fighting those evil Canadians. Alan admits, I have a feeling it's not the flat feet, and then another one of those music cues very sweet Music chimes in as Topenga gleefully walks through the door. She tells Corey the good news. Glenn Miller and his big band Orchestra A come into town. Can they go together? Amy and Alan give each other a look, and to Pega notices cheapers. Why you guys looking at me? All funny? They realize Corey didn't tell Topanga, and so Corey breaks the news that he's enlisted. Tapega is devastated. But you said you couldn't be without me. We were going to be together forever. Corey firmly tells her this is something he's just gotta do. Penga runs away without saying another word. And then we are at Chubby's. Three USO singers stand on stage performing Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and the entire restaurant is plastered with patriotic posters and everyone is dancing. Men are standing around in full uniform, two of them being Sean and Corey. Corey's on the phone asking the operator to connect him to Panga Lawrence. He eventually hangs up and sighs, Golly, you can drive from Philly to Cleveland in a week, but you don't have a machine that can take a message.

00:35:28
Speaker 2: Not not good facting, even with the old timey phone. I know, I thought maybe, I mean, it was like he didn't even need to think of the okay, Like he didn't even listen for a response. It was just it's man ben in facting's so good.

00:35:47
Speaker 1: But such a good actor, such a good actor. Sean tries to cheer him up that Dame loves you up to the sky and back. She wouldn't let you ship out with saying without saying goodbye. Corey emphasizes, I ain't just saying goodbye. Phoeni hears this and butts in, don't say ain't your mother will faint. Just because they're in the navy doesn't mean they need to talk like sailors. Then we see Eric not in uniform, dancing with a pretty girl. He's bragging, Yeah, I could have shipped out with the other Joe's, but the fact is I'm on a secret mission here. I'm guarding the Philadelphia Bell. The girl corrects him, the Liberty Bell. Eric slily explains, I've said too much already, and then so Jim Carrey too much. It's like, oh my god, I'm not even trying to hide it.

00:36:36
Speaker 3: Anymore.

00:36:38
Speaker 1: It's just Jim Carrey at this point, You at this point thought, well, people who watch movies don't watch TV exactly, that I'm sting Jim Carrey exactly.

00:36:50
Speaker 3: Thank god.

00:36:52
Speaker 2: I mean I even felt like when I had the line earlier about he was pointing right at me, I was like, I could tell that I was burying the Joe because I could tell that they wanted me to say he was pointy right at me, right, because that's the way that's me to make it funnier, and I just don't do it.

00:37:08
Speaker 1: And I know that as an actor. I was like, I'm not doing the shit it. We've already got our Jim Carrey because it's right there.

00:37:15
Speaker 2: You see the reading, and it's like he was pointy right at me, Like you indicate as much as you get, Like.

00:37:20
Speaker 1: It's a joke behind me. Yeah. Yeah. Then she tickles him and Eric immediately breaks Okay, okay, it's the liberty bell. Then Jack walks up. I just heard about the mental thing. Eric asks, you mean my flat feet. Jack raises an eyebrow. Yeah, that's it, the flat feet. The pretty girl walks away. Immediately Eric wishes he was going to Jack nods he would have loved having Eric by his side, so Eric tells him he still can. He takes a picture of himself out of his pocket, bring it with you and put it in the foxhole over his bed. Jack hesitates, people will talk. Eric agrees, I know that's a great picture of me.

00:38:02
Speaker 2: He takes the stage as the crowd, I'm so hoping that you still had this photo.

00:38:07
Speaker 1: It's so good. The crowd applauds. Before you ship out, I want to wish our boys courage, perseverance, and a safe trip home. And during the lull in the fighting, I'd like a thousand word essay on what I did in my summer in Europe. Then Amy and Allan enter, and Amy yells out, remember please and thank you. Just because you're a war doesn't mean you can't be polite. Alan tells her he's the one who makes the orders. Now, he sternly shouts to the recruits, let's load the buses and head to Europe. None of them move, so he begrudgingly adds please, and everyone complies. Corey can't leave yet. Topanga isn't there. He tells Sean, maybe she doesn't love me the way I thought. But then to Panga waltzes in again with happy theme music. She responds, of course, I love you you big lug wouldn't let you leave without a proper goodbye. Corey gets serious, There's something I need to ask you. He takes her hand. I know we're young, but we still love each other. He gets down on one knee as the background music escalates. Marry me to Panga. She's shocked. You want me to be missus Corey matthews. He nods more than anything in the world. Then we hear high pitched giggling. It's Eric being tickle pushed down the stairs by his daddy, telling him to stay off the bus. Alan grabs Cory. They need to go. As Corey is being dragged away, he begs to Panga to give him an answer. She shouts after him. Yes, Corey, I'll marry you.

00:39:39
Speaker 2: We already had of cosal yes, and before the real one.

00:39:47
Speaker 1: They're setting it up.

00:39:48
Speaker 2: I think they kind of are right, but I feel like to Pang his birthday, they set up that your parents might they were going to get married sixteenth, their sixteenth, your grandparents, Yes, so they're.

00:40:05
Speaker 1: Oh it's Tapega's lineage. Well, she is the one who eventually proposes.

00:40:08
Speaker 2: Yeah, they're setting us up, definitely setting us up. Yeah, it's just interesting to think that, like somehow because it's in the past, like the fact that they're really young getting married is not a.

00:40:20
Speaker 1: Big deal, like and I think, yeah, it's but.

00:40:23
Speaker 4: It is the end of this season, isn't it that you propose? It's the end of season? No, No, when we graduate is to graduate? I think is graduation five?

00:40:32
Speaker 5: Right?

00:40:32
Speaker 1: So what kind of is a template? It's a temperature? Is the inspiration? Like did this happen? And then they were like, we could do this, right, they could do it in the nineteen forties and nobody bad than I. I suspect that once Michael made the commitment back with the like long Walk to Pittsburgh Long Walk to Pittsburgh episode, the fact that it had already been set up in My Sweet Sixteen episode that like that my parents I think they were I think Michael had it in his head that he was going to end the season high school graduation with the proposal. I think, more than anything, looking for a good we'll definitely get picked up. Great, it is really smart. Yeah, So she poses at the bottom of the staircase with one leg propped up. I'll be right here waiting for you, and when you come back, we'll have the rest of our lives together. Then we see newsreel footage of the war. It's black and white scenes of soldiers fighting and as a narrator explains, they came from all forty eight states, are proud fighting men. They have optimism in their hearts and only one thing on their minds. And then we cut to Corey and Sean at their station. The video still and black and white, and Corey's looking longingly at a picture of Tapanga. The camera pans to the other soldiers who are hanging pictures of their girlfriends at their stations as well. But I'm not looking at a picture of anybody. It kind of kills the joke.

00:41:45
Speaker 2: Like the joke should be, like you cut to everybody looking at photos, right, but like I'm like pumping a gun.

00:41:52
Speaker 1: You should have pictures of like seven girls. Joke wallet exactly. Oh my god, Yeah, that's what it should have been. Made it better. So then we're back to color. And I'm assuming this whole episode wasn't in black and white because ABC didn't want that. Yeah, probably not. Yeah, No, So we see Jack who props up the framed picture of Eric. The other soldiers give him a judgmental look, and Jack defends himself. He's just my roommate, okay. Alan enters from a nearby tunnel in full combat gear, chomping on a cigar. He's quickly become General Patton. All right, you dog faces. He sends a shoulder off to fetch the k Rations, then hands his son a package from Amy. It's a Waldorf salad dressing on the side. The other men look on in disbelief. Corey admits, I have a little trouble keeping the k Rations down. Sean asks if Corey's heard anything from Tapanga. Not yet. He misses her more every day. Sean yells to the group, this man's hurting any of you. Other mugs got a hard luck story of a loved one left behind. They all look to Jack again, He's just my roommate. Corey says he can't expect mail to be on time during a war. Then right on cue, a mailman shows up. Mail call. He's got something for Corey. Looks like this to Panga. Girl's got a bed for you. Corey is furious you read my mail. He snatches the letter and goes to read it in peace. To Pega's voice reads the letter. I liked this part. I liked the voiceover of the letter being read out loud. I'm going into a whisper, did you background to?

00:43:28
Speaker 4: So obviously all the extras you're told don't open your packages or your letters, and they're just holding.

00:43:33
Speaker 1: Boxes and staring at them.

00:43:34
Speaker 2: Matt Lawrence is pulling a full on writer, like just vacant stop but he just stops acting. You can just see behind him, he like just closes his mouth. He's not even trying to talk to other soldiers and he's like looking down. Yeah, and it's like what does he doing?

00:43:49
Speaker 1: Like at least pretend to talk.

00:43:50
Speaker 2: But it's like me when I when we did the when I went to the pinball machine with the baby, and.

00:43:55
Speaker 1: Like I just stopped acting. You can see that, just like I'm just going to stand here. That's so funny. She is counting down the days until he returns and dreaming of their future. Alan interrupts to Panga's voice, Hey, pipe down, we got letters too. To Panga's voice whispers the rest of her letter. She begs Corey to come home. Then boom, we hear an explosion incoming, everyone scrambles. Corey's panicked. He tells Sean, I made to Panga a lot of promises. If I don't come back and you do, I need you to do something for me. Marry her. Sean can't. She's your sweetheart. Kissing her would be like kissing you.

00:44:31
Speaker 2: Corey emphasizes, what how do you guys feel about this whole storyline?

00:44:36
Speaker 4: It was it happened in the war a lot. It happened in the war a lot. It's like, you go, you got to go marry my best girl.

00:44:41
Speaker 1: That kind of thing. That was actually a thing. Yeah, it was a thing. It's so weird.

00:44:45
Speaker 2: I know, this is the strangest thing. And I didn't remember it at all, So I was like, what is and I didn't. Okay, so this was a thing.

00:44:53
Speaker 1: It was a thing, and it was a way of showing, like truly, it's a way of showing how much Corey cares about Topanga, that he really wants her to He wants to know that she will be taken care of and he trusts Sean to take care of her. And I know, and also I was like, it's the forties. It's like no other man would have that woman. I must immediately know you can take that.

00:45:22
Speaker 2: Talk about how many horrible marriages were the result of this kind of thing.

00:45:26
Speaker 1: Oh, no, awful to think about just these poor women, like if they because if they refuse, who is yes, you know, leather jacket wearing jacket, who's just trapped, trapped in patriarchy. Corey emphasizes he said nothing about kissing. He just wants Sean to marry the gal. Sean nods, okay, oh marrier. Now we're in the Matthew's backyard. Amy is dressed as Rosie the riveter. She's working outside. Poene walks up and points out that she's riveting. They just send her away. She took it home.

00:46:04
Speaker 2: It's like, I'm just gonna take the one wing from the plane with me.

00:46:08
Speaker 1: I'll finish this at home. She thanks him for the compliment. No, he means she's literally riveting. Oh yeah, she's decided to join the war effort. Phoene asks why she isn't down at the airplane factory with Rosie and the other ladies. Amy scoffs those lazy so and sows they leave to feed their kids as soon as the whistle blows. Then she breaks down. She misses Corey and Allen. Phoene assumes she must get some comfort from Eric. Eric proudly strolls out from the kitchen. Well, the Liberty Bell is safe for another day. He admits the enemy was able to.

00:46:44
Speaker 2: Put a.

00:46:46
Speaker 1: Will no pants. I was like, yeah, this is this is a good look for will.

00:46:51
Speaker 2: I know you got I mean you always do like preppy, well but like the nineteen forties prep.

00:46:56
Speaker 1: I was like, Rozi, yeah, yeah, So the enemy was able to put a crack in it while his back was turned. But he speckled that baby right up. Then he swiftly flips a fedora onto his head. He's a cure to go along with it. Thank you. I remember, Betsy the first time I did that. When did you see you see what he just did with his hat? And I was like, I just flipped it around once.

00:47:17
Speaker 5: It wouldn't like.

00:47:17
Speaker 1: It's pretty impressive though, looks thank you. I know it's not hard to do, but it looks great, and you do it well, there's flair. Yes, we're in the Matthew's kitchen Salem. The cat is perched up on the counter speaking into a telephone. Sabrina pick up. It's a boy. Okay, it's a cat. I'm stuck in the forties and I'm dying here. They haven't invented kitty litter yet. The magic cat weeps into the phone. He brought them there? Why is he stopped?

00:47:57
Speaker 2: And then when they go back, he doesn't do anything like he can just make him go back, right.

00:48:03
Speaker 5: Well, I do have a small note. I do have a small note. He ate a magic time ball in the Sabrina episode, and so he might I didn't watch the Sabreen episode, but he might not have full control over it.

00:48:13
Speaker 1: So he's on acid time ball. So this is your episode about him being on Guys, we got our answer. He swallowed a time ball. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Time is going to send him back, but this time ball.

00:48:30
Speaker 5: Okay, okay, can see if you would have rather been in one of the other show's decades.

00:48:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, the sixties or seventies, eightiet would have been pretty fun.

00:48:38
Speaker 1: It had been perfect for us.

00:48:39
Speaker 5: Well, i'll tell you what they had. Sabrina had the sixties. Yeah, you wish had the fifties, and Teen Angel had the seventies, so.

00:48:47
Speaker 1: We could have had the seventies. We would have couldn't have done the fifties again, so we could have either had the seventies or the forties.

00:48:52
Speaker 5: You guys kind of got the shaft. I think seventies.

00:48:55
Speaker 1: Seventies would have been best.

00:48:56
Speaker 2: Wait, but what were it? I want to know what the big difference they did between the sixties in the seventies. It's not like it's the sixties and the twenties.

00:49:03
Speaker 5: It's right, you know, well, it's super weird because the sixties. One is, Sabrina goes back to the sixties to discover that the flower Power era was not so groovy for pre liberated women. That's I understand that plot, okay, and then teen Angel has a nice day in nineteen seventy six, which is roughly the vintage of Marty's Fonzie like Angel impression, which I don't know.

00:49:21
Speaker 1: Oh, that's why we couldn't do it. We couldn't do another Fonsie thing.

00:49:24
Speaker 2: But Sandy was the fifties, even though the fiftiesties, I mean, even though it was in the seventies when the show was on the air, it was actually set in the fifties.

00:49:32
Speaker 1: So it's very strange. I don't know, time time, ball time.

00:49:35
Speaker 2: You know. What's interesting is we wouldn't have done the eighties because they were like to recent. It was just that interesting. Now the eighties would be like one of the best to go back to.

00:49:43
Speaker 4: And yeah yeah, or the nineties, Oh god, if we ever find a time ball, we got to go back to that.

00:49:50
Speaker 1: Ye I have a camera. I wonder you should find me a time ball. You have a radioactive camera. Halfway there, way there, You're right. So then we're at the war. Corey sad. He plays a harmonica as the rest of the group sits in silence. Alan Patts's son on the shoulder, what apparently him not actually playing the harmonica, because then it keeps going throughout the scene playing it. But I was like, what is there a ghost? Coury? What you didn't bother you guys at all? It's not so harmonica.

00:50:18
Speaker 2: When he's walking, I was like, oh, that's you know, Ben blowing into harmonica. But then when he's sitting down and having the conversation, it still thoughts up again and it's like at the same volume, the same harmonica, and I was like, whoa. So they just were like, I don't know what happened.

00:50:31
Speaker 1: But that's great. Alan Pats's son on the shoulder and tries to cheer him up. The war will be over soon. Corey smiles, then brings something over to Sean. Also, there's a really big laugh at the war will be over soon. The audience likes a really big laugh, and I was like, I missed, I missed a joke. I guess, I don't think. I don't know, but also does doesn't this mean we would have had to have been in Europe for like years at this point if the war started, which because the war wasn't going to be oversued. Oh right, So they're laughing because we the war just started, but then we actually do end because this is supposed to be the end of the war. This is you guys have supposed to have been there now for years. I think how long? So Corey didn't hear Tapanga careers forty one to forty five, thirty nine?

00:51:21
Speaker 2: Well for America America forty one because we started with the day of infant five.

00:51:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, so four years. Yeah, so we've done Europe for four years and he hasn't heard from Topanga until he's just staying yes, I guess, so okay. Corey smiles, then brings something over to Sean. It's the ring he's planning to give to Topanga. Sean asks him where he got it, and Corey happily states cracker Jack Box. Sean admits, if ever two people belong together, it's you and Topanga, but Corey reminds him about that promise, you know, the creepy one where you have to marry your best friend's girlfriend if he dies. Jack runs in and turns on the radio. The announcer says, once again, the war in Europe is over. The soldier's cheer. Corey shouts to the clouds, Topanga, you hear that I'm coming home. He climbs the ladder and jumps out of their bunker. Last one back to Philly is a rotten egg shy giant boom mic in that shot. No, oh, coming in right from the corner. Just this big old boom mic coming. Well, there we go, and then pop it right out again. Yep, Sean yells back, Wait, you forgot your ring. Then the announcer continues a ceasefire will commence in twenty four hours. Oh no, Corey is long gone, but Sean tries to yell out to him. We then hear a large explosion and Sean looks out onto the battlefield. As he yells for Cory, a pair of dog tags drops into his hand. The worst has happened. The main character from Boy Meets World has died in a very weird episode. And then we see more newsreel footage of the end of the war. It's black and white video of soldiers reuniting with their loved ones and the country is celebrating. The narrator mentions that the transition from war can be hard for some. We're back in the Matthew's backyard. We return to color a few seconds in. Amy is still riveting and Alan begs her to stop. The war is over. There's nothing left to rivet. He tries to open the back door, but it won't Budge, did you rive at the door again, darling? Amy insists, if I stop riveting, it means the war really is over and Corey is not coming home. Jack and Eric appear from behind the bushes. Jack is in full uniform and Eric acknowledges his valiant efforts during the war. Jack commends him right back. The boys in Europe are really proud of the work you did defending the bell to Panga and Shaw arrive next. Tapanga asks Amy if she's heard anything about Corey yet. Amy is certain that any minute now he'll be walking through that door, but Alan reminds her he won't be able to open it. It's been riveted shut. Sean chimes in, I guess I put this on off long enough. He announces that he needs to ask Tapega something. He gets down on one knee and asks her to marry him. Everyone gasps in unison, and Topega slaps him across the face. Sean ads, I probably should have mentioned it was Corey's last wish, and then everyone nods, understanding me. I do think that that's a little bit of a wink and a joke about what's happening, like, oh my gosh, why would he do that? And then well Corey wanted and ride right? Right? Of course that makes sense, like that's that's that's leaning into it a little bit like right, that makes it to help sir, that is uh so, And then you guys get to do Will and Matt, you guys get to do to Penga. Yeah, later we can know that, which is great. It's so fun.

00:54:29
Speaker 4: But this is where Ryder and I so you and I obviously you can't look at me.

00:54:34
Speaker 1: I didn't notice that. Oh yeah, you can't look at me.

00:54:36
Speaker 4: And then when you finally do, your mouth starts and they cut back to me and I'm turned sideways that you could clearly tell that I'm laughing.

00:54:43
Speaker 1: Oh my god, which lines what I don't remember the exact lines. Penga says, if it's what Corey wanted, Sean pulls the ring out of his pocket. Corey couldn't wait to put this on your finger. If you blow into it, it makes a siren sound. Sean notices to Pega isn't happy. To Pega responds, you're not Corey. Before they can make plans to Panga runs off, Sean tells the group, Hey, if I had things my way, Corey would walk in the day after the honeymoon and have the whole thing annulled. I bet we had done that. It was a couple of times, and you guys, because yeah, I'm clearly to laugh, So I bet that that is. I bet that's what it was. I saw the later one with you and Matt that was way too had I also love that joke. If I had my way, he look in the day after the honeymoon. It's so funny. He's so smart, smart, Amy grabs Eric by the shoulders. Corey is Tapega's one true love. She knows Corey's out there just waiting for someone to rescue him. She tells Eric, if you want to be a hero, you go to Europe and you find him and bring him home. And then we are in Peris, France with an establishing shot of the Eiffel Tower. We're in a French cafe and a woman is kissing a Parisian man named Pierre. They had to have Corey cheat on Topanga even.

00:56:20
Speaker 2: Make out with another girl any anytime he slightly bumps his head, has a dream, whatever, he he just.

00:56:28
Speaker 1: Needs to have a little bit of space from her, and it's bound to happen. Boom.

00:56:33
Speaker 4: By the way, keep in mind, it's it's the straight up Homeric, you know, going back to Troy where Topanga of course has stayed completely and totally loyal to him and hasn't done anything for a year, but he instantly helps up.

00:56:49
Speaker 3: With another woman.

00:56:50
Speaker 1: It's unbelievable.

00:56:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, and she seems older, and like, I know, did she strike you guys as a little.

00:56:58
Speaker 1: An older French woman?

00:56:59
Speaker 5: Yeah?

00:57:00
Speaker 2: And then and that really hit me when like she and t Panga look at each other later and I was like, oh.

00:57:04
Speaker 1: The pang is the right stranger and this is weird, and yeah, I know a kid. So we quickly realized that Pierre is actually Corey. He leans in for another kiss and she tells him he must get back to his painting. Corey says, who cares about work when you're French and in love. The woman reminds him that the doctor believes the painting can help restore his memory. Corey assures her all I remember is waking up naked, my clothes burned to a crisp, and I was speaking perfect French. This runner of a joke about him speaking French is very funny to me. I love it. The woman laughs at the idea of him speaking perfect French. She then points out the woman in the portrait another thing we don't see. I kept waiting to see it.

00:57:47
Speaker 2: I was so frustrating, obviously, so waiting to do the reveal at the end of the epicaus reference is a painting that was like, oh, let's see I.

00:57:56
Speaker 1: Know odds yes, the girl a phantom from a dream. Every night I wake up in a cold sweat seeing her face, hearing her voice. The French woman insists that maybe this girl is his one true love, and then we're back in Chubbies. It's now Sean and Tapanga's wedding. Topanga walks down the aisle, clearly unhappy. She asks Alan and Amy if they've heard anything about Corey. Alan says no, they have to face it, but Amyan says, snow, she is sure her son is still alive and he loves Tapanga. Phoene stands before them holding a bible. Here comes the Bride begins to play and he somberly looks at Tapanga. It's time. Sean and Tapanga do not look ready? Yeah, this is this is where I wrote. I'm sorry. Can someone explain this tradition to be? What would exactly work? What no one else would take her? It has to be it has to be the best friend, okay, all right? And like, why would Tapanga ever told you? Why? Well, if it's what Corey wanted, yeah, oh exactly, you can''s not about your happiness. It's not about me. It's about my boyfriend, obviously, of course.

00:59:04
Speaker 5: So uh.

00:59:05
Speaker 1: We are then back in Paris, France. Eric and Jack walk into the same Parisian cafe. Where we saw Corey earlier. The two boys are very smart. There's only a one in Paris too, yep in Paris.

00:59:18
Speaker 4: And by the way, I have completely now dropped Jim Carrey, totally different.

00:59:21
Speaker 1: Now you're well, Now you're like a p I a funny bi The two boys are complaining about the French being rude and calling them ugly Americans. Why would they do that? Then Eric becomes a complete ugly American and yells to the familiar waitress, pounds his fists on the table, Hey lady, come on the regular. Jack reminds him they're there to find Corey, so he shows the waitress a picture of Corey. She examines it. He does look familiar, but ultimately she says, no, we don't get many ghosts in here. Jack takes the photo. You've been showing everyone a picture of Corey in his Halloween costume. Eric nods scary, huh boo another time where again insert would have been great. Don't see the picture. Then Corey, dressed like a mime, walks into the cafe and sits right next to the boys. Eric notices this, dude, I should just take a picture of that guy. After some inspection, Jack tells Eric to look closer. Eric screams, you're alive. He ecstatically embraces him. My Cory. So this is the plot of Muppets Take Manhattan, is it?

01:00:21
Speaker 4: Which is one of the good greatest Well because Kermak gets hit by a car and he doesn't you are doesn't know Yay Tordelini from Passaic, New Jersey.

01:00:32
Speaker 1: I don't feel Italian.

01:00:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great movie.

01:00:37
Speaker 1: Corey pushes him off. He doesn't know any Corey. He's Pierre, the tortured French speaking artist. Eric tries to jog his memory. He's Corey Matthews from the us of A to pang Us back home, about to get hitched. They've got to get him home. Corey turns to Versailles, tell these American tourists who I am. Forsie size, I knew this day would come. She says farewell to Corey and French, and he stops her. I'm sorry, I always. She decides, if this is the only way for him to find peace, he must go. Corey gets out of Eric's grip and assures her the only way for him to find peace is to put an end to the dreams of the girl that haunts him. He gets down on one knee. Make me the happiest tortured Frenchman in all of Paris. Marry me, and then we cut back to Sean and Tapanga's wedding. Phoene glumly states, well, Sean marrying Topanga this is weird. On the other hand, who would have thought that as principle I could perform marriages. It's so funny. Topanga raises her hand. Wait, I object, she can't do this. She knows Corey is still alive. When you love someone, you just know. Amy responds, that's why I sent Eric and Morgan, who is the flowers in the show. She was in the background of a couple of seats. She gets the talk.

01:01:53
Speaker 5: Yeah.

01:01:54
Speaker 1: Then back in Paris, France, Eric's at the podium in the cafe. He tells Jack he's likely ordained to perform the wedding ceremony, considering he's the brother. Why is Eric all of a sudden performing the ceremony that he didn't want. It's supposed to stop, Okay. I was just like, hey, this is the part you don't get. Versai grabs Corey's hand. This is what you want, Pierre, Corey yells yes, of course. Then he remembers something. A house in the country, kids playing in the field, someone to grow old with. These are all things to Panga wrote in her letter, is his memory coming back? Is this what also happened? To Kermit? Versailles asks him what's wrong, and Corey brushes it off. This is the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Then somehow, to Panga has arrived and just says, oh, kermy Topega bursts through the door, still wearing her wedding dress. Is this what you want? Jack and Eric are shocked to Penga and that's where he's just he can't eat.

01:02:55
Speaker 2: Oh, he literally can't. It seems like you guys were like waiting, feeling your guys, you both do it and he just has to look away.

01:03:03
Speaker 1: And then he looks right at the camera. When he looks back, he's like, did anyone else see that?

01:03:06
Speaker 5: Oh?

01:03:06
Speaker 1: God, it was great. Eric boasts to his mom, I'm performing a wedding ceremony. She immediately tells him to go home. Versi recognizes her. She's the girl from your painting, but Corey cannot remember anything. To Pega exclaims, maybe you'll remember this and kids this time, and she grabs his face and ensorceles him. Corey admits it does seem familiar. Then he asks for Cy what she's got to. Pega grabs him. Corey matthews, if you think for one minute that I'm going to stand here, And apparently it was the nagging that helps him to recall his memories. He shouts to Penga for Ci hands her the bouquet. She knows her days are done. Corey says the last thing he remembers is climbing out of a foxhole to see her. He must be in heath. Tapega assures him he's alive. Corey wonders about the Shawn promise. Tapega says she could never be with anybody else. Her dreams mean nothing without Corey, and then triumphant music plays as Corey says, I told you i'd come back to Penga smiles I found you, you big lug, and they kiss, and then we're back in the tag at John Adams High, Back in time. Still, Sean asks Corey what he's going to do about Topanga now that the war's over. Corey says he's going to pop the question all over again. He wants to Panga to know that he really does care about her and that gesture wasn't just because of the war. So he makes his way Toto Panga and tells her there's something he'd really like to ask her. But then that green and Yellow Camo cartoon time warp strikes again, and we're magically back at John Adams High. In the present day, Corey and to Panga are standing in the exact same spot. She reminds Corey that he wanted to ask her something.

01:04:52
Speaker 2: He asks it, Wait, are they in the exact same spot? And are they wearing the same clothes?

01:04:57
Speaker 3: No?

01:04:57
Speaker 1: Not from before? Swap positions, actually swopping sides too, I think.

01:05:01
Speaker 2: So time kept going going in the present day.

01:05:08
Speaker 1: It's not you. No, we're not in the same positions we were at the beginning of the episode. Different, we're in the same positions we were right before the Camo time warp just happened again.

01:05:16
Speaker 2: Right, okay, so the time present kept going right, gotcha?

01:05:24
Speaker 1: Right? Okay? On it all right, I'm here. It's it's math now. It makes perfect. It's hard, but it makes sense.

01:05:30
Speaker 5: I got it.

01:05:31
Speaker 1: He asks Stepanga if she wants this cool siren ring he found in his crackerjack box. She put it on her finger and smiles, I'll treasure it forever, you big lug. She leans in and kisses him, and then we get a second tag. Back in Paris, France, Sabrina's cat Salem, is sitting in the cafe. He complains he's the only one who can't find love and romance in Paris. He has to go somewhere where people are real and down to earth. La, here I come, And then I guess perhaps this is yet a third tag. We're at the CBS Redford lot where we are currently shooting Boy Meets World. Salem is trotting across the lot. What a flight five and a half hours behind a screaming kid, five and a half hours from where Paris. Yeah, that doesn't make any sense from New York. You have to stopover in New York. Yeah, so the last leg, Okay, five and a half hours behind a screaming kid. Somebody ought to put him in a cage down below, because then I had to think about what that meant. And Salem was in a cage under where the luggage goes. Why couldn't you transport? Also, guys, why was he hearing a kid then?

01:06:39
Speaker 2: Exactly? And I don't did he not have a seat on the plane, because then he was You can be a.

01:06:44
Speaker 1: Cage under the seat, but he wouldn't be sitting behind Anna.

01:06:47
Speaker 2: Now I found a flo is so now we're seeing, we're seeing outside the Boy Meets World lot.

01:06:52
Speaker 1: So he traveled all the way to LA to where the show that he had just entered into the time was in film. There's a lot, which now a lot. If you're gonna do this kind of meta thing, shouldn't it be one of us throwing away from right home where he'd be like, ah, because it says boy Meets World? For like, I was like, I didn't remember this is Corey going to show up? But it's going to be Ben or something that would. Yeah, I like that joke. No, that's all we get, though. Salem hops into a dumpster. Above him reads a sign for Boy Meets World. It's maybe our most meta moment yet. An argument could be made. Maybe a man wearing a tuxedo and a top hat tosses a half eaten orange into the trash. The cat looks at him and asks, hey, are you famous? Where do I find Drew Carrey. I want to have lunch with this guy. I thought maybe he was gonna have a line, or that it was somebody we knew or had no famous No, I think was just a background actor.

01:07:46
Speaker 4: Yep, the man is just think he was one of the soldiers. Maybe maybe he looked familiar.

01:07:50
Speaker 1: He looks familiar to me.

01:07:51
Speaker 2: I think it might be somebody that was around a few times, or maybe friends with somebody on the show. Because he looked familiar, I was like, I think I know that guy.

01:07:59
Speaker 1: Well, the man is disturbed and he walks away as sale and yells out you gotta love La. And that's our episode nineteen forties baby, nineteen forties.
