Nick Swisher's Wildest MLB Stories: Giambi, Barry Zito, Yankees
Matt Barnes sits down with World Series champion and 13-year MLB veteran Nick Swisher for an unfiltered conversation. From the Oakland A's locker room to the darkest year of his career to winning it all in pinstripes, Swish holds absolutely nothing back.
They get into Jason Giambi's infamous team motto, Barry Zito's off-the-field life, and what it felt like to win a World Series with the New York Yankees after hitting rock bottom in 2008.
Plus — the real talk on A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, the death of Oakland baseball, the Dodgers dynasty, and why the Yankees are built different.

00:00:00 Speaker 1: Welcome back. 00:00:02 Speaker 2: All the Smoke dugout MLB playerhouse out here in cold in a little bit rainy Arizona. It's normally not that. Uh got to my We're right, my men, Nick, they call him Swish. We've been working today. We shot a show early, we got a chance to sit down with Eric Davis. We were supposed to have another guest that couldn't make it last minute. So now we're just gonna shoot the shit. I mean, this is a new channel in the baseball space. You know, All the Smoke is partnered in the MLB space. We've been big fans, so now we're doing some works out to my man CC and everyone who made this happen. So normally me and Nick are the interviewers, but now we're just gonna go back and. 00:00:41 Speaker 1: Forth because we got a little history. You guys probably don't know about. 00:00:46 Speaker 2: Where we So we met in what six so six in our careers, one parallel in sports two to seventeen. Both of us were both a couple months older than them. We're both eighties babies, so there's a lot of similarities here. 00:01:00 Speaker 1: But we believe team I. 00:01:03 Speaker 2: Was on my way out the NBA when this shit happened this particular season. I had drafted cut g League, played with the Clip, got a call up from the Clippers, played well, had an opportunity to sign a two year minimum deal. But this is the same time, and it was funny you asked me who my bet was. This is the same time in two late two thousands when See Webb was with the Kings, and I'm a Sacramento guy but going to school UCLA. It's the Laker team rivalry, so I and I'm working out all time with him, and I met Jay will And and Bib and when the trade went down and everything. 00:01:39 Speaker 1: So I'm working with them. So there's a chance for me to go home and play. 00:01:41 Speaker 2: Long story short, I go home play get traded with Seve Web to Philly. 00:01:45 Speaker 1: Horrible. 00:01:46 Speaker 2: I've talked about this horrible time. I was on my way out the NBA. So I'm in Sacramento in that off season. Baron Davis calls me up and tells me they're playing a pickup game and at noon, come down. I'm in sacrim I know I'm an hour and a half away. Push down Long story short, played really well. Nelly loves me. So this is the season I end up meeting you. How'd you get there? Two thousand and six? 00:02:09 Speaker 1: Bro? 00:02:10 Speaker 3: So, I mean, wow, it's crazy you're going back that far. I mean, listen, I got to call up in four I think it was like September fourth, something like that, Toronto, Toronto, Blue Jay's facing Ted Lilly and I remember the day before we were in Seattle and I had a stretch. 00:02:27 Speaker 1: Bro. I think I clipped like ten Jackson eleven games. I mean, bro, I was a movie bro. 00:02:32 Speaker 3: Like just it felt like it was like this big everything was clicking. And I remember I got to the ballpark really early because you know, my locker, I didn't feel like my locker was clean and I got that OCD thing. So my locker's always like it's a representation of me, so I always trying to make sure it looks super clean. So I get to the ballpark early and Skipper calls me in. He's like, hey, man, I got a question for you. Hey you know Ted Lily, And I'm like, oh, hell yeah, man, great picture. You know. He's like, you think you can hit him? And I'm like, bro, fucking twenty three years old, hell yeah? And you know, like I would have said, I could have hit cy young and right, and so the next thing you know, he's like you really, you know, he's got a good change up, really good location, not crazy you know, high v low. You think you got that? And I'm like, what happened? I'd love to give it a shot. And he goes, well, you're gonna have your shot tomorrow. And it was just one of those moments where you know how it is. Man, It's like you get the call, it's real. You've worked your whole not not necessarily your whole life, but once you got into it, bro, there was nothing that meant more than that. That was what every kid in the planet wanted to hear at that moment. And so I finally got that call, and Bro, you're just like you don't know what to do. You're almost freeze. So I just remembered, you know, hugging him. Bro, I'm a big hugger and rolling out, and I tried to call my dad. That's my guy, you know, my hero, bro, like through and through man for everything we've gone through together in life, that that's that's my guy, bro, you know, and no answer, and I'm like, fuck, man, like this is the one guy I want to call. So then the second person is my grandma, right, she was still alive. I got her initial was tattooed across my heart, Grandma Betty. I call her no answer, Bro, I'm like, what the fun? You know what I'm saying, Like, I just want to share like the greatest piece of information that I've ever got. And so I didn't get that chance for another like two hours. Come to find out that my dad was giving the speech that day, so they had a decent excuse. But make a long story short, it just made that drive from West Virginia up to Toronto a little later that night, you know, so they all go up. 00:04:28 Speaker 1: My first game. I forgot to leave tickets for my parents. Bro. 00:04:31 Speaker 3: Like it was just I was just floating, bro, Like I just I was so in the moment. 00:04:36 Speaker 1: So anyways, have two years in Oakland up to that point. 00:04:39 Speaker 3: Two thousand and six was kind of like that was kind of like my coming out party, you know too? 00:04:43 Speaker 1: Yeah, bro, Like it was like, man like I'm here. You know, I'm a name, you know, I'm. 00:04:48 Speaker 3: I mean we went to the playoffs that year, you know, like went to the Alcs. Bro, Like Frank Thomas was on that squad. Bro. 00:04:54 Speaker 1: Yep, the big hurt is the ship. Bro. I fucking love that guy. He is a monster. 00:05:00 Speaker 3: But Bro, you know he could clip him to right. Bro, he tap you the center and he would launch piece you how big as he six five six six? I bet you I think six five sixty six, two sixty two seventy. 00:05:12 Speaker 4: Bro. 00:05:12 Speaker 1: His chest is like a barrel. Bro. 00:05:15 Speaker 3: But he got these little ankles, Bro, he got these little ballerina ankles. 00:05:18 Speaker 1: Bro. 00:05:18 Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, But you're just talking like you know, So six that was a year, and I remember in five like like my guy was Jason Kendall. Bro, Like when I got there, the things that he taught me in such a short amount of time, he was vet. 00:05:33 Speaker 1: That was my guya. 00:05:34 Speaker 3: That was my vetting Jason Kendall and Frank Thomas because Jay had me in two thousand and five, and then big Frank came in two thousand and six, and who the fuck wouldn't want a flock to like one of the greatest hitters on the planet, right. So two thousand and six, Bro, that that's when we met up. You know, like you guys were kind of having like that hey here we are moment. You know, we were too, Bro, It's so sad to see Oakland. What's happening over there? Bro that area? Bro, if things were going we were five, there's place life bang like. Now, I'm just like, it just. 00:06:02 Speaker 1: Feels like that's such an end. 00:06:04 Speaker 2: The teams we played for where we met in the in Oakland are gone. 00:06:09 Speaker 3: I'm nervous to what that. What's gonna happen, What's gonna happen in that area housing? I'm guessing I feel like that would be a good you know, you're right next to the highway. You know, you can get you know, right on and go San fran one way. 00:06:21 Speaker 2: And days though, what were the what were the what we were early days like in the streets of the Bay area, Broke. 00:06:27 Speaker 1: Well, we used to rock out in like Danfield, Okay, you know what I'm saying. 00:06:31 Speaker 3: We lived in black Hawk out there were rolling over there for a minute. 00:06:36 Speaker 2: We're going in Oakland, Fridge. You gotta just stay where you stay, where you should stay, where you should have. Not gonna lie to you. 00:06:48 Speaker 3: We go to San France every now and then, you know, which was it was a great haven't been to San Francisco in a minute. 00:06:53 Speaker 1: But back in the day, man, that plays well. 00:06:55 Speaker 2: Like I said, like people don't understand that the Bay Area culture and how it's a whole different world. But help the fan base whether you're good or bad. But when you're good, oh bro, hey, can't they show up? 00:07:05 Speaker 1: Yeah? 00:07:05 Speaker 3: The problem is you got to be good. You have right at the end of the day, Like, and you're kind of at the time very small market still in our world. And until they make that official move to Las Vegas, which by the way, because have you seen the plans for that place? 00:07:18 Speaker 1: Yo? Is it gonna happen? 00:07:20 Speaker 3: Hey, it's already in the works, right and we and we've we had the MLB All Star or the MLB Awards. Uh there yeah in November and bro, sorry starting it's happened. People are talking about it. I just think in general, man, it's that logo that those clean ass white uniforms were nasty. Bro. You can't tell me, man, with the with the white shoes. Bro, it only looked clean for about two innings until you dove into second or something, and then like that was back when the nikes had. 00:07:48 Speaker 1: All the dirt would get in them and you couldn't get the dirt out of that mess, you know, which was the worst. 00:07:53 Speaker 2: But someone's allegedly someone has the logo. Did you hear about that? Someone They got the trade, they got the trademark for the logo or with it for the logo of the names. 00:08:05 Speaker 1: Somebody bought it before they bought it? Are they Are they sitting down a gold mines? I mean, at the end of the day, what do you do? Do you rebrand your whole organization? 00:08:15 Speaker 2: Are you sitting on are you pay the people what they want for the for the. 00:08:18 Speaker 3: Bloody I'm asking for the kidschen Bro, I'm asking for. 00:08:21 Speaker 1: The whole I'm in the carport, bro want all that stuff? You know, it's Las Vegas. 00:08:27 Speaker 4: Vegas Athletics, That's what I'm saying, like themselves, Las Vegas. 00:08:32 Speaker 3: What trademark officiers reported rejecting the athletics, Las Vegas Athletics and Vegas Athletics. 00:08:43 Speaker 1: But once again, like is that smart? Right? Like? Is that smart? 00:08:47 Speaker 3: Like? Because at the end of the day, like just let's be brutally honest, man, we all seen it. 00:08:51 Speaker 1: At the end. 00:08:52 Speaker 3: Yes, maybe the last couple of games of the season, the whole city showed up, but they're for the regular season. 00:08:57 Speaker 1: The fan base was who because back in the. 00:08:59 Speaker 3: Day when I was a triple A and Sacramento because we was launching, we was locking in twelve thirteen a night. Oh you know, Sacramento loved there for real, you know. And so at the end of the day, like it was almost like you get called up to the big leagues and there's like. 00:09:11 Speaker 1: A step down. It's a step in a big ass stadium, he said, six. You know what I mean. It was like the Indians before. 00:09:21 Speaker 3: Now when you're rocking and you're winning, there there they're there. Bro no doubt I have to say. 00:09:25 Speaker 2: On the on the basketball side though they were we were, it was they were smoking weed in that motherfucker. Whether we were terrible or whether we were rocking, just more weed when we were rocking. The energy that was the fun. You guys went to ALCS that year we went. That's that's the year we beat Dirk. 00:09:40 Speaker 1: Yeah, and and that was the that was something to man. The energy around that was electric. 00:09:45 Speaker 3: There's a vibe about like oak Town, like in that area, there's a vibe about it and when it's right, it's it's infectious, dude, because it's a it's different than other places. 00:09:54 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:09:54 Speaker 2: Then we talked about some of your your teammates Eric Chavez third base. 00:09:59 Speaker 3: Because is he looking, bro, the swaggiest he he he was swagged before swag was swaged. Like he had the old school hurrachis with with the spikes on the bottom before nobody else had the six gold gloves. Bro. Like dude had that smooth left handed stroke. Bro, good looking dude. I'm like, damn, this guy, this is who I want to be, Ya, this is who I want to be. 00:10:20 Speaker 2: Right, you didn't play with them, but you you were talking about how you guys looked at the Jason Giambi he was just listen, tell me what you way. He told this ship on the on the balcony, heavy which one? 00:10:33 Speaker 1: Which one? When you say you saw him on Sports Illustrated with the shirt. 00:10:38 Speaker 3: Shirt, yes, dude, Hey, I know everybody's seen. I'm gonna give you the pose, right, but I don't have it. 00:10:43 Speaker 1: G does right. 00:10:44 Speaker 3: But when he's sitting there and he's got the bat over his shoulder, Sports Illustrated, the long ass hair, the tattoos, the whole none. 00:10:50 Speaker 1: Bro. 00:10:51 Speaker 3: If you didn't want to be Jason Johnby in that moment, man, something was wrong, Bro. 00:10:54 Speaker 1: He was he was there. 00:10:56 Speaker 3: It is, Bro, for real, he's jack too, bro, like you know know why now, but. 00:11:01 Speaker 1: Like he was yoked bro for radio. 00:11:07 Speaker 3: Man. So like his whole saying was because remember he went through that run with Jenna Jamifson for a hot minute, right, you know what I'm saying. So the whole quote in the organization with Jason Johnby, it was like play play like an all star, which is exactly what you need to do. First party like a rock star, which what comes next? Fuck like a porn star, bro, which is what comes next? And that was like in. 00:11:28 Speaker 1: The minor leagues that was kind of like not the Montra but maybe the slogan. It was just like yo, show up, put. 00:11:35 Speaker 3: Your work in, do what needs to be done, and then reap the benefits of what you're doing. 00:11:39 Speaker 1: You get a chance to know him very well. 00:11:41 Speaker 3: Good dude, dude, I mean one of the most for everything that that man has gone through even up to like the loss of his brother, like something that you would wish on no one. Just the overall like grace that he has gone through life with, right, like the the ups, the downs, you know, like his family is rock solid. Now mm hm, you just got to be proud of somebody like that, you know what I'm saying. So I got to catch him in Cleveland, which was like what an honor for me to be able to catch him at like the twilight of it all. But he was just one of those guys man that like he was there and he was so willing to give and to share and get his knowledge, man like big G. Because you need to come back to the game, bro, somehow, some way. Man, you need to come back because someone like you and your overall knowledge and the way you think about the game, the overall accomplishment you've had, Bro, he needs to be coming back here for sure. 00:12:29 Speaker 1: Your main die JD. 00:12:31 Speaker 3: Bro. The first thing that comes to mind is more my time with him in the White Sox when I had him over there and he was on from six', five you know What i'm, Saying like long lean dude right had a cannon from the, outfield could ron clip you right. 00:12:45 Speaker 1: Center pull, you, know the whole. Nine he was. 00:12:48 Speaker 3: Dope but one of the reasons WHY i got called up to the big leagues because he broke his. Thumb oh, really he broke a finger or a, Thumb and that's WHY i got called. Up AND i was on that, heater and SO i just happened to Go and by the, way everybody knows an, oh like once you make a name for, yourself like you're gone. Good, yeah like you're getting traded away from, prospects which is what happened in my in my in my. 00:13:07 Speaker 2: Position that's, PAUSE i, know BECAUSE i still want to talk about that three headed monster in the pitching. Staff but you're on a. Heater, yeah get called? Up, yeah how does it? 00:13:15 Speaker 1: Go like talk to? 00:13:17 Speaker 3: Me, Okay, so like you, know my sort of career. Was you, KNOW i had great play. DISCIPLINE i was really. GOOD i COULD i could, WALK i could get on. Base that was kind of one of my, attributes along with a little bit of. Thumb and it's just so, fitting bro THAT i get up for my first at bat and, bro you, REMEMBER i don't know if you even ever remember like that first like pass that someone threw you in your FIRST nba. Game but you didn't feel, That, no, no you didn't feel. THAT i don't even THINK i saw the first. PITCH i don't even THINK i saw. It it felt LIKE i was just floating there for a. MOMENT i was, like oh my, god like where AM I like what's happening, here you? Know and SO i feel like after, that uh THEN i kind of regrouped myself back together and AND i spit on a three to two change up away for my first at bat and walked in my first A b, Right and it was just kind of like one of those moments WHERE i was, like you know, what, like fuck, it, Man like you belong, Here, bro if you earn the right to be, Here, man let's fucking, Compete let's go for. 00:14:08 Speaker 1: It let's see what we. 00:14:08 Speaker 2: Got was there a game or or or a great day in the from the plate that you felt, Like, Okay i've really around. 00:14:15 Speaker 1: Here you. Know i've always had crazy self, confidence. 00:14:18 Speaker 3: Bro maybe sometimes too much you need it in. SPORTS i don't, know, MAN i just feel like to compete at that, level you got to have something different than everybody. 00:14:28 Speaker 1: Else, like not everybody's gonna like the way you go about. It they don't have to put. It but at the end of the, day like, now. 00:14:33 Speaker 3: At forty five years, old the WAY i look at, life the WAY i treat people is a little differently than the WAY i went about my business in my. Twenties And i'm probably sure you could say the same way because in my, Twenties i'm on a. Mission get the fuck out the Way i'm. Coming and at the end of the, DAY i feel like that's kind of gone by the wayside a little bit. Now but at the end of the, day like there's such a small percentage of players that are able to even get to that, level to even like touch the field for one pitch twenty SIX i was in twenty five. Thousand, Ever, yeah so, like come, on, Dude like you're gonna do something that's gonna piss some people. Off but at the end of the, day if you're authentic and you fucking rock it out and you do exactly the same shit each and every, day, bro ain't nobody say nothing about that because you're just, saying you know, what, Man i'm. Here i'm here for a. Job i'm not here to be your. Buddy i'm here to fucking. Win i'm here to continue to keep. MOVING i want a better. Life LIKE i want something for, me, DOG i wanta said something for me and my family moving. Forward like what's wrong with having that sort of intense attitude about something that you gotta have passion for that? 00:15:32 Speaker 1: Shit Man, Zito because. 00:15:36 Speaker 3: Roster ALL i gotta say Is Barry zito Roster back in the, Day, bro he had them. 00:15:40 Speaker 1: All he was the. Man. 00:15:42 Speaker 3: Bro he was flipping that twelve six curve, Ball, bro holding sigh youngs and rocking his. Guitar, dude oh, rock he has spot up on top of sunset Dog. Man he had a mirror on the top of his fucking. Bedroom Brocauz Zito oakland a days baby for a Real, hey that's the man you wanted to be, with, right that dude right there and now right he's got a beautiful. Family now him and his wife are the solid. 00:16:09 Speaker 1: RELATIONSHIP i like how you smoothed that out. 00:16:14 Speaker 2: BECAUSE i, mean obviously we have to talk BECAUSE i mean you you, know you're, married and like we got to we want to be able to tell you guys these, stories but we got to stay. Respectful we also have to understand me we were a single and we, weren't you, KNOW i, mean we will a little, different you. 00:16:27 Speaker 3: Know i'm sure she got a life for, him, right you Know Mark. Molder, Okay SO i Think mark AND i got off to a bad jump, early. Right i've seen him a few, times you, know in the last couple of years just in, passing AND i just, think, LIKE i don't, know, man we just didn't vibe. Out me And mark no. Problems but like now it's like we were just talking on the. Upstairs it's like. 00:16:54 Speaker 1: Now That i'm now That i'm, done that chip is. 00:16:56 Speaker 3: Gone so any of that, turmoil any sort of like bad THOUGHTS i had towards other, PEOPLE i fucking dropped, that And i'm, like you know, what let's kind of start. OVER i think everybody's a little different on the other side, anyways you, know because you're Not it's it's not you versus. Me it's not like. That it's, like, oh, ship we can all be part of this ship, together you. Know SO i think we jumped off to the wrong. Foot book, man, dude Stud, bro god waste like this fucking. Show he looked Like Ivan Drago, bro like the Massive matt, shoulders dude hands. 00:17:25 Speaker 1: Bro you Know hudson Motors Zo cuz back in the day that that, THREE i, like talk about the same, thing. 00:17:34 Speaker 3: Bro you, know great, guy sick, athlete bro. SICK i think he was like an all around guy and two way guy At. Auburn but just you want to talking about them three. Guys i'd match those motherfuckers up with anybody in today's, game Bro velo or No. Vlo them fools were just getting people, out, dude like trying to think like a power three right, now Like dodgers have to be. 00:17:56 Speaker 1: Right you know you Got. 00:17:56 Speaker 3: YAMAMOTO i, mean, bro you can almost get. Cheers who the fuck you want to put in them? Three gotta have a tiny up in there. Too who else you Got Snell? 00:18:04 Speaker 1: Glass? 00:18:04 Speaker 4: Now? 00:18:05 Speaker 3: Bro fuck that list goes on and. On SO i put them dudes up with those. Guys, dude you know in that. 00:18:10 Speaker 2: Era you know What i'm excited about IS i was a huge Base bob was telling you upstairs Like Little league was the best time of my. LIFE i, MEAN i played other, sports but being able to have a little uniform mom with a team that shit was amazing to. Me SO i was a die hard baseball. Fan and as we were talking to Uh Eric davis, earlier like my teenage years were the steroid airs AND i fucking loved. 00:18:32 Speaker 1: It it was. 00:18:33 Speaker 2: Like LIKE i, said they lean to a chicks dig the long. Ball people were hitting sixty home like that was must WATCH. TV i don't ever remember like making sure you had to WATCH. Tv you, major you have only one way to watch, it t you had to watch it ON. Tv because when you, remember you. 00:18:48 Speaker 3: Wake up every, morning, bro turn on THE, tv you, know like just trying to. Sit Like Sports center was kind of catching on at that. Time that's how we caught the. Highlights, bro we watched that shit before we had to get on eight o'clock bus, Man like we was up early for. That my my my oldest daughter gets it's up and like way early to do her hair and. MAKEUP i get. 00:19:05 Speaker 2: So for, me like that was my those are my glory, days my. Heydays OBVIOUSLY i went on and went SO i kind of, lost not THAT i lost the love BECAUSE i always loved, baseball but kind of just paying attention like a real, fan. 00:19:15 Speaker 1: BEAU i had a share of my. 00:19:16 Speaker 2: Own so NOW i feel, like with this partnership and people like, you That i'm gonna be, Around Like I'm I'm i'm glad to learn this new. 00:19:22 Speaker 1: Era HOW i knew for sure THAT i grew. Up, yeah and listen, BETTER i think the game's gotten, better. 00:19:29 Speaker 3: Right you Know it's funny you hear a lot of these older gentlemen speak about, analytics and and there's there's there's a crazy pushback to all, that like immediately because it's it's different and everyone's afraid of changes and they don't want their game to go to. Ship but that's not the fucking. Case the case is it's just fucking amazing. Information at the end of the, day each team gets that same almost very similar. Same i'm sure teams have different algorithms for how they come up with certain stat lines or, whatever but all that data is pretty much the. Same it up to that team on how they utilize that, Data, Okay AND i think some of the best teams out there are the ones that transfer that information to the player in the most proper, way BECAUSE i think that's the hardest. 00:20:11 Speaker 1: Part analysts are. 00:20:13 Speaker 3: Crazy, smart, Bro they're, Crazy they're so smart and AND i feel, like as a player, now like looking back at, it a lot of this INFORMATION i would have. 00:20:21 Speaker 1: Liked some of the INFORMATION i don't THINK i would have. 00:20:24 Speaker 3: NEEDED i, think and that's that's for each player to have this conversation what are you looking? For it's like for, you it's like what do you want to know about you, know you Know, Minnesota like what do you want to, know like you, know who's who's, hot who's not, right you, know like what their go to plays are ship like, That like that's WHAT i wanted to, Know like what's just put away? Ship you, know what's what are his? Pitches give me his? Vlows but now man with with all the different camera angles and you got like you. 00:20:47 Speaker 1: Keep saying, velocity, velocity like how hard he? Throws? 00:20:52 Speaker 3: Right so, yeah just knowing like you, know because now like it's all based on spin rates and so now like instead of saying like how much does a? Break NOW i have a numerical number to put on that amount of, break, right based on like you, know. 00:21:04 Speaker 2: What's a twelve to six can? Break what's so americ number for a twelve to six? 00:21:07 Speaker 3: Break look on a, clock, Right so like, yeah just kind of twelve six action coming, down, right depends on like the amount of inches per. 00:21:14 Speaker 1: Drop But Barry zitos had to have been elite whatever that elite number. Was this just. Crazy so there's a number now on. 00:21:20 Speaker 3: That so instead of saying like how much it, breaks there's actually a number THAT i can give you. 00:21:24 Speaker 1: To be like what that number would be exactly? TWELVE i, mean it's dirty. 00:21:29 Speaker 3: Bro Like and by the, way man number seventy five, bro for, real, bro he was wearing that shit with seventy five wasn't cool back, then you know What i'm, Saying, like. 00:21:37 Speaker 1: Who was seventy five? High long in the. Day, yeah for. 00:21:39 Speaker 4: Sure analytics ruined the A'S i feel like analytics was that the first part of analytics was That Kurt kisson home run when he read that shit down there on a the sage. 00:21:48 Speaker 3: TABLE i, mean maybe you, KNOW i feel like, Yes but in my, DEFENSE i feel LIKE i was drafted WHERE i was based On billy being wanting to get into that analytic game because he appreciated on. Base so his whole thing was get on base as often as. Possible and THEN i want some guys to kids some home runs, too so we could play for the three run. Bomb and by the, way if they're for a, minute it worked right, now you're you're in. There you're in the punch out. Era these motherfuckers are throwing gasoline, boys and at the end of the, day you can't sit around and take pitches like someone like me. Did LIKE i bet you my first pitch percentage rate of take was crazy. High So i'm LIKE i want to get into the. BAT i always thought to, myself who the fuck wants to go up there for six? 00:22:30 Speaker 1: Seconds? 00:22:31 Speaker 3: Bro it's my time to. Hit, Bro i'm will be up here for a. Minute y'all gonna see me down, here you know WHAT i? Mean SO i always try to take my. TIME i was up there. Good i've Handled i've handled this really well my coach, situation AND i have a like him. 00:23:17 Speaker 3: TOO i feel, like you, know but once, again, like did this coach of yours have a big personality as? Well he was his an? Asshole, Okay, WELL i don't Think ozzie's an. ASSHOLE i don't think he. IS i just think that at that. 00:23:30 Speaker 1: Moment, brother. 00:23:32 Speaker 3: He's a, big big, personality big, personality, Right and that year was not my best statistical, year probably one of the Worst i've had in my career, actually but now looking back now on the, metrics it wasn't as bad AS i. Thought so that's why WHEN i came back To New, york they were, like, Dude you're way better than that. 00:23:48 Speaker 1: Year and THEN i. 00:23:49 Speaker 3: Absolutely just exploded because he gave me the right to do. It, ANYWAYS i don't THINK i don't think he's an. ASSHOLE i just, think you, know he has a big personality and sometimes the way he the way he kind of interacts with people can can rub people the wrong. Way and so obviously maybe the way THAT i spoke around him maybe rubbed him the wrong. 00:24:07 Speaker 1: Way but whatever it, was, bro it was like fire and, ice bro. 00:24:12 Speaker 3: Like like, uh oil and, vinegar, dude like like with, water invent whatever, whatever whatever does? It shit don't. Mix they just don't. Mix and so it was a really hard. Year was ALSO i WAS i was in a bad spot off the field. 00:24:24 Speaker 2: Too like, PEOPLE i don't think people understand talk to that a little, bit not about what the spot you, were, uh what you were going, through but how That Like i've been ON tmz and still trying to focus on the, basketball like the worst. Ship you, know it's that mental part of the game that people don't talk about a. 00:24:40 Speaker 3: Lot, yeah, Bro like you KNOW i never was in that position right, there but LIKE i just, know even just for, Me i'm, like that's one THING i think people need to start taking into consideration a little. More that's WHY i feel like digging into the relationships and in any sort of mentor managerial whatever you want to look at, it you gotta fucking know your guys because like at the end of the, day, like, yes my number say, this but that's when my guy's at full, speed, right that's when he's at one hundred. Percent WELL i know he's not BECAUSE i know his fucking hip is banged up because last now put one in there last, night, Bro SO i already know his. STIFF i, KNOW i know his dog passed away three days. Ago he's really taking that, hard SO i know he's not gonna be at his. Best, so LIKE i don't, Know that's WHY i feel like information is. Good but it's also, LIKE i think relationships are what's gonna fucking move you, Forward like that's the fucking. Deal communicating having all that. Shit so me And ozzie didn't, communicate, well it just wasn't. It i'm glad it was a one year. Situation, UH i just from. Doubt you know WHAT i. 00:32:58 Speaker 3: Think the other, day you, Know Aaron judge gave a press, conference and it just felt like it was almost like a challenge to everybody in the, organization from the coaches to the, players front, office training, staff ownership to, like let's, GO i got won three MVPs in the last four. Years i've gotten the opportunity to play in One World series my whole entire. 00:33:24 Speaker 2: Career we're going to get to, that but they Keep that's What i'm. 00:33:26 Speaker 3: Saying so just for him to say something like, THAT i think means a lot because that's the captain of the, team. 00:33:31 Speaker 2: So he has like to, ME i would, say Like Draymond, green was that for The? Warriors like when he, spoke every the whole top to bottom. Listened way different. 00:33:41 Speaker 3: Personalities, yeah but when as that, respect When aaron, speaks people usually, listen which is. Great and at the end of the, DAY i think he's got to get everybody paddling in the same fucking. Direction it's such a crazy world we play, in, Dude like a lot of a lot of the game is starting to become on the back and WHAT i feel like is for The New York yankee. Organization The New York yankees aren't fucking blessed to have. You you're blessed to play for the Fucking New York. 00:34:10 Speaker 1: Yankees you feel me no matter who you. Are that's What i'm. SAYING i don't give a fuck who you. 00:34:14 Speaker 3: Are Aaron judges thinks the exact same, thing, right he, thinks fucking a, man how blessed AM i to be part of this? 00:34:19 Speaker 1: Team? 00:34:19 Speaker 3: Right if you get everybody like, that, dog it's next it's next level. Shit, now that's the fucking hard, part, right is to get everybody on. That, listen you've been a locker, room they all. 00:34:30 Speaker 2: Different, YEAH i mean when everyone is, on that's when special things happen because it's, special. 00:34:34 Speaker 3: Man and it's, LIKE i don't, KNOW i think that we've talent man off the, charts bro our staff this, year boys is gonna be. Nasty, man get ready for that ship for, Real these boys gonna be. Ready i'm not, lying, Man it's gonna be. Good and we got, depth which helps out. Too BUT i think just in, general man, like we gotta hold that expectation bar back up, there, man. 00:34:55 Speaker 2: Two years ago versus To. Dodgers you guys had an opportunity to close that. Out wasn't able to. DIE i just were able to get. That what was that experience? Like and and kind of the aftermath of that, Situation, LIKE i, mean you. 00:35:07 Speaker 1: Was there game, one, right did? You you didn't know the GAME i was there. Right. 00:35:12 Speaker 3: Listen at the end of the, day, man those games boil down to one play here or, there especially in the first game of the. 00:35:17 Speaker 1: Series bro all everything's like crazy at the. 00:35:21 Speaker 3: Pitch second, inning nobody, on nobody out two, outs there's a one to two, count and the place is standing, up, bro like they're just going nuts every. Pitch, obviously you, know obviously anybody can Be monday. More in a, quarterback you can say so and so should have been put, in or so and so should have been put, in or so and so should have been backing up to play. 00:35:38 Speaker 1: Whatever you. 00:35:39 Speaker 3: KNOW i just think at the end of the, day sometimes it swings your win and sometimes it. Doesn't like we had a magical run that year and it was awesome to be part, of but. 00:35:46 Speaker 1: At the end of the, day we didn't cross the finish. 00:35:48 Speaker 3: Line so regardless of how it, ended it didn't end As Derek jeter would, say we didn't, win, like who is the fuck how we? Lost we didn't, Win, like, well why are we playing this? Game we're playing the game to, Win so regardless of all went, down it's just being able to learn from that moment and just continue to keep moving, forward, Bro, like we have the greatest player on the fucking planet playing right field for us every, night, right it's just finding the pieces around him that we need to get to help him achieve that, goal to help all the fucking twenty six guys in that locker room to win the. Thing it ain't about the coaching, staff it ain't about the front. Office it's about the fucking players getting shit. Done Terry frankcona talks a lot about, that. Dude, Man i'm telling, you just the way he goes about his business with these young, kids bro like it vibes dude liked. E d would say the nicest things About terry Frank, ConA dude like the way he goes about, it and. 00:36:31 Speaker 1: The players would say the same shit mm hmm like SO. 00:36:34 Speaker 2: I think just to see obviously we came up the same, time played the same, time the way we were able to be, coached, yell dat, scream cuss. THAT i know in basketball you can't do that same thing and the baseball and can't do. 00:36:45 Speaker 1: It, no you can't do. 00:36:45 Speaker 3: It, yeah, well SO i don't necessarily know if can't do it or how to do it. 00:36:50 Speaker 1: Has, changed ok. 00:36:52 Speaker 3: RIGHT i just think for myself in that leadership, position Whether i'm owning a business or a team or running. Anything bro from running like the you, know IF i have an, ISSUE i would never intentionally publicly humiliate you because come in my office when you get, time we got shit to talk. About SO i don't, KNOW i just think at the end of the, day it's like setting the. EXPECTATIONS i feel Like i'm in one of the my relationship is fucking awesome because we have fucking rules and there's boundaries and you don't you don't fucking cross those. Boundaries that's just is what it. Is, like that's what's wrong with setting, rules like Brob, ALL i wanted to be, Coached, BRO i wanted to be pushed like what you don't you know WHAT i. Mean so at the end of the, Day i'm, LIKE i don't think there's anything wrong with. THAT i just think it's just how you go about that that people would fucking vibe off, Of. DUDE i think just you learn from, experience, Bro AND i think right, now IF i said to, you would you be a better head coach right now than when you than when you first step foot in THE nba just from your overall experiences of how to handle, people how to handle the. 00:37:53 Speaker 4: Game. 00:37:54 Speaker 3: Listen analytics are amazing because it helps make the decision easier because it's, there the data is. There it's easy to know what number is better than. 00:38:02 Speaker 1: This that's. Awesome but there's another part of. 00:38:04 Speaker 3: It there's another part of, me you, Know and that's WHY i feel like that's WHY i would one of these, Days. 00:38:10 Speaker 1: BRO i want that. Opportunity. 00:38:12 Speaker 3: BRO i want to fucking hop back in, there, dude BECAUSE i feel LIKE i care a. 00:38:15 Speaker 1: Manager B, YEAH i care a, lot. 00:38:18 Speaker 3: Dope and you know, What, listen, Man i'm so blessed to be at home with my kiddos right. 00:38:21 Speaker 1: Now. Dude you, KNOW i got a twelve year old and a nine year old to. 00:38:24 Speaker 2: Grind it takes away from a lot of. That that's WHY i. Retire that's why you know we won a championship Of Golden. State, yeah and THEN i called it a career BECAUSE i just felt LIKE i was missing so much time THAT i wasn't gonna be able to get back in. 00:38:35 Speaker 1: It and it became a. 00:38:36 Speaker 2: Job it becomes a job later in the, career like it's the best job in the, world, yes but it's a. Job and how much time you have to miss and splitting time and like that stuff becomes. Hard and like you, said spending time with your kids is, ultimate. 00:38:48 Speaker 1: Bro and you got how? MANY i? Got seven? Total that's What i'm. Saying i'm, like, yo, guys we got some work to do. 00:38:54 Speaker 3: Better we got BECAUSE i need you to put that into somebody, else, RIGHT i need that that mind and that heart putting other people because, like isn't that what life's? About like how fucking cool is it that we get to raise these little little mini us is and your wife you know or? Whatever BECAUSE i don't, know, man it's just been. Fun AND i Know i'm going on twelve and everybody's gonna, say, man, yeah your ways, coming AND i know it is for, sure but one you know once, again like, wait, Yeah i'm like fuck, it, man let's, roll, baby you know What i'm, Saying, Like, YO i got a kick ass relationship with my. 00:39:26 Speaker 1: Kid let's let's try this shit. Out you, Know i'm ready for. 00:39:28 Speaker 2: THIS i love to hear. It but speaking of The, dodgers who got you, guys they're changing the? 00:39:33 Speaker 3: Game, yeah, yeah, Man like, listen it's it's not necessarily it's hard to compete with that BECAUSE i don't. 00:39:39 Speaker 1: THINK i don't always think the best team, wins so, yes but telling Wist, bro it's fucking it's. Hard it's hard to compete with. 00:39:47 Speaker 3: That. Man they just it's almost like it just feels like they find a loophole and they're just going for. It but they're also thinking to, themselves, this fuck, it, man if it costs, me IF i get fined one hundred and sixty million, year But i'm In world. Series Mark walter is probably, like fuck. THAT i want the, Rings, bro bring me those. Rings i'll pay the fine because the revenue that's coming in is probably. 00:40:08 Speaker 1: Insane. 00:40:09 Speaker 2: Dude my friend AND i were talking asking we're on the, weather they're probably name like a hotter team than any sport across The dodgers or. 00:40:16 Speaker 1: Well by the, way DARE i say dynasty in the. Process, right we're in the middle of. It i've excuse, me we're in the midst of. It, yeah, man it's it's pretty. 00:40:24 Speaker 3: Impressive IT'S i also think, too there is something to be said about the locker room culture that they have. Does he has his you, Know i'm sure he has this leadership group In mookie Bats. 00:40:41 Speaker 1: Wholly why the fuck did you know? 00:40:42 Speaker 3: That Freddie, Freeman, like come, on, bro like you, know, Yeah Clinton kershaw for all. This come, on, Dude, like how blessed are you to have those guys in that locker room. 00:40:51 Speaker 1: To keep the team where it needs to? 00:40:52 Speaker 3: Be show Heyo tani Who by the, WAY i don't know what he's like on the inside of the locker, room but All i'm saying is you need to watch that motherfucker and you're, like, DAMN i respect the shit out of him because every second of every day is spent towards being the best player in the world for. Him but he GOT i THINK i heard he's got like a watch or, something and it like judges like how much sleep he gets and if you don't get enough. Scheme like you have to be here or you're. 00:46:20 Speaker 2: Missing, yeah there's no question that said you can't still be you don't have time to go to another sport now because you get behind in whatever you think is a fucking. 00:46:26 Speaker 1: Lie because we. 00:46:27 Speaker 2: Talked about it With, ed LIKE i felt like EVERYTHING i did help me in a certain way in my main. 00:46:32 Speaker 3: Thing let me tell you, this because you got it or you. Don't you got it or you, don't AND i. DON'T i don't mean to say this in the worst, ways but, like there's very few people that build, themselves that have that sort of drive and passion to build themselves into something they're not supposed to. 00:46:47 Speaker 1: BE, yea by the, way, LISTEN i didn't. 00:46:50 Speaker 3: EVER i didn't play organized baseball UNTIL i was later in life, too BECAUSE i was with my dad every fucking summer playing tight ball in the locker. Glove and my dad was, like you gotta buy it, yourself And i'm, like. Fuck so WHEN i got all these illuminum, cans saved up all my own. Men so like that's WHERE i learned to play the. GAME i learned to play the game for. 00:47:19 Speaker 1: Joy. 00:47:20 Speaker 3: Bro When i'm riding the fucking bus When i'm six years, old we're a, waterloo im and we're riding the. Buck i'm climbing to the back underneath all the, seats, bro because the playboys were in the. Back you know What i'm, Saying, like just like little shit like. That like so WHEN i think of the, GAME i think of. JOY i also think, too, dude like. 00:47:34 Speaker 1: You work so. Hard that's a, release. 00:47:37 Speaker 3: Bro Like i'd run hot all the, time AND i just my dad used to always, say like soun like that's your. Release you go out, there you be wherever the fuck you want to be out. There that's your, release that's your three four hours that you can go be whoever you want to. Be And i'm, like fuck, man for, real you, know for. Real BUT i also had a dad that ran The garnlet Bro my, dad you, know played for eight, years coached with The mets for two. 00:48:01 Speaker 1: YEARS i think he's got ten total years in the game. 00:48:03 Speaker 3: Now so because as much as my dad and not butt heads throughout, life why the fun wouldn't you want to listen to somebody who've been there and done. 00:48:09 Speaker 1: THAT i did. 00:48:09 Speaker 3: It so that's why it's like learn from, Others like you're not the fucking best player in the. Room you, know there's always somebody. Better and these young kids coming, Out, man maybe the specializing is, good maybe it's. 00:48:20 Speaker 1: NOT i, MEAN i don't. 00:48:22 Speaker 3: Know time will, tell but at the end of the, day it seems kind of like the game is is. 00:48:27 Speaker 1: All in all in all facets of, everything just everything is just a little. Different that's. 00:48:31 Speaker 2: All growing up in AN mlb, environment you spoke to it a little, Bit but what was it like seeing your dad on That major league field as a. 00:48:37 Speaker 3: YOUNGSTER i was born in eighty and my dad retired in eighty. Three you didn't get really so when my brother was, born my, YEAH i didn't get the, showtime BUT i got the baseball cards, right AND i got the, pictures AND i got the. 00:48:50 Speaker 1: Articles that was newspaper and shit back. Then you know What i'm. 00:48:52 Speaker 3: Saying and WHEN i think of my dad In Major League, BASEBALL i think of long bus, rides. COACHING i think of, standing you, know hitting in the batting cage and you, know him like tossing me balls like two feet away and me. 00:49:06 Speaker 1: Just trying to whack. 00:49:07 Speaker 3: Them and then like all the you, know the guys would come out and they trying to throw the ball really, high see how HIGH i could catch. IT i remember bat boying and catching the ball off the net back in the, day like behind my, back like showing off and. Shit so like ANYTIME i think of the, GAME i think of joy like that's that's HOW i came up with this. SHIT i don't know if every kid's, PERCEPTION i, guess or the game is like. THAT i think it might be a little different for some, Kids but once, AGAIN i don't even know that it feels like this was a, statistic but like seventy some percent of kids stopped playing sports by the time they're. Thirteen Whoa, cuz, like fucking a that that's, why, bro that's why it's. Happening there is a thing called the fucking. Burn, yeah when these kids just burn the fuck. Out, dude enough is, ENOUGH. 00:49:47 Speaker 1: I think for. Specializing to, me right by the, way. 00:49:50 Speaker 3: Back in the, day for all of us in, here whatever the fucking season, was that's the sport we was playing for. Real and if you wasn't playing sports that, summer you was probably training for that next season. 00:49:59 Speaker 1: Anyways So i'm just, LIKE i don't. KNOW i don't know if it's good or. 00:50:02 Speaker 3: Bad. MAN I, mean it feels like the product of the game is more talented than what we. Were but at the end of the, day like is it best for those, Kids like is it is it best for them in their? 00:50:12 Speaker 1: CAREER i don't, know, MAN i don't. Know, say we'll. 00:50:13 Speaker 2: See so what else you got going on outside of daddy and, yeah like BUSINESS? Tv whow, me, DUDE i got my hands in a lot of, things you. 00:50:24 Speaker 1: Know I'M i feel LIKE i like to be. 00:50:26 Speaker 3: STIMULATED i like to have things going you, know as much AS i am as off the, WALLS i am. ORGANIZED i got a plan LIKE i, Did LIKE i have a great idea of What i'm trying to. Accomplish so, yeah, man being able to you, know be with The yankees is fucking b for. Sure you, know obviously being able to be part Of team Cap Commissioner's ambaster, program badass group of. 00:50:50 Speaker 1: Dudes. Bro just like the fact THAT i was included in. That explain, that BECAUSE i think that's. COOL i think that's SOME nba can. Use, well explain what that. 00:50:57 Speaker 3: IS i, mean, listen at the end of the, day you, know you're talking about a you, know a very, unique, successful very shiny group of individuals that The COMMISSIONER i feel like has done a great job of bringing us on, board making, us you, know feel part of, it giving us a lot of education as, well because you, know it's always like the players in The commissioner's, office it's like they both. Hate it's like there's so much hatred in that in that little. Space, yeah cause it's like it always feels like the you, know we've got A cba coming up at the end of this. Year it's like it's always the players versus the front, office because the players think the front office is fucking them and the front office thinks they're fucking the. Player you, KNOW i don't, know BUT i think we're kind of like that, middleman you, know to like let the guys, know, like, hey, man like, what they're not out to fuck, you, Dude like they're out to. Help they're out to make the game, better and to make the game. Better there always has to be. Changes but at the end of the, day, man this game has been the same for fucking one hundred plus. Years so anytime you bring anything, in you're gonna have people that like it people that. DON'T i think what's gonna come up in THE cba is gonna be fucking. AMAZING i think you're gonna fuck bring a floor into play, now which is gonna is gonna get that tanking shit out of the, way because at the end of the, Day i'm sure that a lot of these major major organization owners are sick of paying the luxury, taxes which in turn ends up going to the other teams that don't give a, Shit and So i'm excited to see what. Happens it's been a, really really awesome crew just to be part of man like just the overall opportunities we have to learn about, everything, Right, like whatever you're interested in the, game there's opportunities for you to. Learn so for me AND i, KNOW i, KNOW i speak for all the rest of the, guys it is an absolute blast to be part of is an honor to be part of that. Group AND i think we're really really starting to make some change in the. 00:52:42 Speaker 1: Game. 00:52:42 Speaker 3: Dog anytime you have people Like, Ceczabathia, bro Like jimmy brawl Is Ryan, dog these guys leading the, group come, On, bro you always know you in good. 00:52:51 Speaker 1: Hands. 00:52:51 Speaker 2: Dope all, Right, well quick, hitters the interview has been.
