Let's replace weak verbs with stronger verbs! Each powerful verb in this list will improve your English vocabulary and fluency.

One of the most common problems I hear among students who are already at an intermediate level of English is that they really want to have a rich vocabulary. You don't just want to use the same basic words over and over; you want to use interesting and powerful words.

So today I'll teach you 20 interesting verbs that will supercharge your vocabulary.

And that's actually a good example – I could say "improve your vocabulary" or "expand your vocabulary" but those are weaker verbs than the word "supercharge." This strong verb is so much more descriptive, it creates a mental picture of getting a huge boost in vocabulary power.

Let's learn about compound words in English! This is when two or more words come together, making a new word that functions as a single word.

Compound words can be:

• - nouns: ice cream, mailbox, merry-go-round
• - verbs: babysit, take off, double-check
• - adjectives: long-term, homemade, bulletproof
• - adverbs: singlehandedly, self-consciously
• - prepositions: inside, without

As you can see from those examples of compound words, there are three types:

• - "Open" compound words (with a space between them) police officer, hot dog, high school
• - "Closed" compound words (without a space between them) bedroom, popcorn, firefighter
• - Hyphenated compound words well-dressed, self-esteem, mother-in-law

You probably already know the English word beautiful - that's an adjective, it describes a person or thing. Now, make sure you know all 4 forms:

§ Noun: I stopped to admire the beauty of the sunset. (in this sentence it's being used as a noun - THE beauty)

Linking verbs do not describe an action – instead, they connect the subject of the sentence to a word describing it or providing additional information about it. For example:

• - I feel tired. ("tired" describes me)
• - He seems annoyed ("annoyed" describes him)
• - She is a teacher. ("a teacher" describes her)
• - They are students. ("students" describes them)

Hi! It's Shayna from EspressoEnglish.net and today you'll learn 20 words that most people spell wrong. In fact, two of them are in the title of this video!

1. The word definitely does NOT have an "A." Some people even write "defiantly" which is a completely different word. But the correct spelling of definitely is definitely.

2. And the other mistake is your, y-o-u-r. In the title of the video it should be you're, which is short for "you are." The version spelled y-o-u-r is for possession - your house, your dog, your backpack.

Our question of the day is from a student who asked what the expression "wishful thinking" means.

Wishful thinking is when there's something you hope or want to happen… but the reality is that it probably won't; it's actually very unlikely. Let me give you a couple examples!

In a previous lesson we learned 10 words ending in -less, which means without, and today we'll learn 10 words ending in -ful, which means something like "full of":

• Something that's "beautiful" is full of beauty
• Someone who is "successful" is "full of success," they have a lot of success.

Note that the suffix is -ful, only one L, different from the word "full" which has two Ls.

A student asked me when we use the word feeling (singular) vs. feelings (plural), like in the sentence "I can certainly understand your feeling / feelings." The most natural choice here is feelings, because we use the plural form when it's a substitute for the word "emotions" in general. We use the word feeling, singular, when we're talking about one specific feeling. It's usually modified with an adjective - an amazing feeling, a terrible feeling, etc. In today's lesson you'll expand your vocabulary by learning collocations with the words feeling and feelings. These are combinations of words that are often used together - and learning them will help you speak English more easily and naturally.

It can be frustrating and embarrassing when you don't understand a question… but this video will help! A vowel is a sound we make with our mouth and vocal cords open, without touching our tongue to any other part of our mouth. In vowel sounds the air flows freely (differently from consonants, in which we block the air with our tongue, lips, or teeth). Vowels in English are represented by the letters A, E, I, O, and U. The letter Y is considered a "semivowel" because sometimes it represents a vowel sound, and sometimes it represents a consonant sound. English vowels can be divided into two types: long vowels and short vowels. The difference between them is in the duration of their pronunciation. Long vowels are pronounced with an extended sound, while short vowels have a quicker sound.

Don't say "I'm thinking to buy a new car." The correct way is "I'm thinking about buying a new car." There are actually multiple prepositions we can use after the verb "think," but what's the difference between them? That's what you'll learn in today's lesson!

Are you ready to try pronouncing some SUPER-LONG English words? Today we're going to practice pronouncing words with 6 and 7 syllables! Before we begin, two important tips for pronouncing long words: First, you need to know which syllable is the strong one, so that you stress the right part of the word. I'll show you which syllable to emphasize (you can also check a dictionary). The other tip is to try it slowly first, then gradually increase your speed until you can say it at a normal speed. In today's lesson, I'll say the words once slowly and once normally, so you can repeat both times.

Today I'd like you to consider this question: Is your English unbalanced? If something is unbalanced, it means it is not equal, it is not even. There is more in one part, and less in another part.

Learning a language has many different aspects:

• Reading
• Writing
• Listening
• Speaking
• Grammar
• Vocabulary

If you are strong in some areas, but weak in others, your English is unbalanced.

• Some students read a lot - even advanced texts - but they can't understand much when they listen.
• Some students have a large vocabulary... but they can't put the words they know into phrases.
• Some students are great at grammar, and can write very well... but have very bad pronunciation, and it's difficult to understand their accent.

This is what it means for your English to be unbalanced. And in a moment, I'll give you some tips for solving this problem. But first, look at those six aspects of the English language and think about which area you are strongest in, and which area you are weakest in. In order to be fluent in English, you need to be good at ALL the aspects of the language, because they are all connected, and all of them are important for fluency.

Here's one suggestion: You can dedicate one day of the week to working on each area. For example…

• Monday - Reading
• Tuesday - Writing
• Wednesday - Listening
• Thursday - Speaking
• Friday - Grammar
• Saturday - Vocabulary
• Sunday - (Relax!)

This way, you can make progress in all the areas together, and your English level will improve as a whole. Now, in order to study all the aspects, you might have to visit many different websites...

Today I'm answering a question from a student who asked how to use the phrases "I couldn't agree more" and "I couldn't care less" – so today I'll explain them by using a couple of mini-dialogues.

Today I want to help you avoid a very common mistake that lots of people make – and that is writing the word "grammar" like this: G-R-A-M-M-E-R. There's actually NO "e" in the word grammar; the correct spelling is G-R-A-M-M-A-R. But when we speak, we pronounce it like "er" – grammer, not gram-MAR – so that's why people often misspell it with -er. It's an understandable error. There are actually lots of words in English that end with -ar or -or in an unstressed syllable, and we pronounce them more like -ER. Let's practice more of these words.

Today I'm going to teach you 10 English idioms for talking about problems and difficulties.

Speaking of problems, idioms like these can be a problem when you're learning English! When you're watching TV or listening to a native speaker talk, you'll often hear idioms and they're hard to understand because you can't translate them word-for-word; you have to know the meaning of the whole expression.

Today we have a GREAT question from a student who asked: "Which is correct: if I was… or if I were…?" The answer is that we use BOTH in English, but in different situations! I'll give you some good examples to make it clear.

Try to practice this right away by writing two sentences – one with "if I were" and one with "if I was" – to help you remember when to use each one correctly!

Yesterday you learned how you can get fluent faster by focusing on learning phrases, NOT on memorizing individual words or grammar rules. But there's another problem that might be holding you back from becoming fluent. That problem is not being confident in your English.

Here are three simple ways you can increase your confidence to speak English.

Over the next four days, I'm going to share with you my best tips for improving your English speaking. Let's get started! Here's one reason it can be hard to speak English. You might know a good number of English words... but then it's difficult to put them together into sentences when you speak. First of all, it's a LOT of work to put together an entire sentence word by word. It takes a lot of time, and it makes your speaking slow. Second, a lot of questions come into your mind:

• Am I using the right words?
• Is the grammar in this phrase correct?
• What if I make a mistake? Will the other person laugh at me or not understand what I'm trying to say?

These doubts and worries can STOP you from speaking, or make you nervous to try! So my first tip that will help you speak English fluently and confidently is NOT to focus on memorizing words or grammar rules.

Instead, focus on learning phrases.

A collocation is two or more words that go together naturally. Learning collocations is essential for making your English sound fluent and natural! Today we'll learn 50 English collocations with the words big, great, large, deep, strong, and heavy. These words all seem rather similar, but they are used in DIFFERENT combinations of words.

Today I want to help you fix a pronunciation problem that I hear in a LOT of students' English, and that is saying things like this:

• I ask-ed him to help me.
• We pre-par-ed for our trip.

The mistake is with the verbs in the past, ending in -ED. The correct way to say them is:

• askt (not ask-ed)
• pre-pard (not pre-par-ed)

It's a small mistake, but unfortunately it makes it obvious that someone's not a native English speaker. I'll explain some simple rules to help you pronounce the -ED ending correctly every time, and we'll practice together!

A lot of English learners are curious about the word "shall." Is it the same thing as "will"? When exactly do we use it? I'll answer those questions in today's lesson.
