This series of talks unfolds the highest truths of Vedanta through the study of "The song of God". 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 11 Verse 1: अर्जुन उवाच | मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यमध्यात्मसञ्ज्ञितम् |यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन मोहोऽयं विगतो मम || 1|| arjuna uvācha mad-anugrahāya paramaṁ guhyam adhyātma-sanjñitamyat tvayoktaṁ vachas tena moho ’yaṁ vigato mama 🔴 Arjun said: Having heard the supremely confidential spiritual knowledge, which You have revealed out of compassion for me, my illusion is now dispelled. || 1 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 11 Verse 2: भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां श्रुतौ विस्तरशो मया |त्वत्त: कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यमपि चाव्ययम् || 2|| bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṁ śhrutau vistaraśho mayātvattaḥ kamala-patrākṣha māhātmyam api chāvyayam 🔴 I have heard from You in detail about the appearance and disappearance of all living beings, O Lotus-eyed One, and also about Your eternal magnificence. || 2 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 11 Verse 3: एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर |द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं पुरुषोत्तम || 3|| evam etad yathāttha tvam ātmānaṁ parameśhvaradraṣhṭum ichchhāmi te rūpam aiśhwaraṁ puruṣhottama 🔴 O Supreme Lord, You are precisely what You declare yourself to be. Now I desire to see Your divine cosmic form, O Greatest of persons. || 3 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 11 Verse 4: मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो |योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम् || 4|| manyase yadi tach chhakyaṁ mayā draṣhṭum iti prabhoyogeśhvara tato me tvaṁ darśhayātmānam avyayam 🔴 O Lord of all mystic powers, if You think I am strong enough to behold It, then kindly reveal that imperishable cosmic form to me. || 4 ||

Amongst feminine qualities I am fame, prosperity, fine speech, memory, intelligence, courage, and forgiveness. || 34 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 35: बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् |मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकर: || 35|| bṛihat-sāma tathā sāmnāṁ gāyatrī chhandasām ahammāsānāṁ mārga-śhīrṣho ’ham ṛitūnāṁ kusumākaraḥ 🔴 Amongst the hymns in the Samaveda know me to be the Brihatsama; amongst poetic meters I am the Gayatri. Of the twelve months of the Hindu calendar I am Margsheersh, and of seasons I am spring, which brings forth flowers. || 35 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 36: द्यूतं छलयतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् |जयोऽस्मि व्यवसायोऽस्मि सत्त्वं सत्त्ववतामहम् || 36|| dyūtaṁ chhalayatām asmi tejas tejasvinām ahamjayo ’smi vyavasāyo ’smi sattvaṁ sattvavatām aham 🔴 I am the gambling of the cheats and the splendor of the splendid. I am the victory of the victorious, the resolve of the resolute, and the virtue of the virtuous. || 36 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 37: वृष्णीनां वासुदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवानां धनञ्जय: |मुनीनामप्यहं व्यास: कवीनामुशना कवि: || 37|| vṛiṣhṇīnāṁ vāsudevo ’smi pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanañjayaḥmunīnām apyahaṁ vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśhanā kaviḥ 🔴 Amongst the descendants of Vrishni, I am Krishna, and amongst the Pandavas I am Arjun. Know me to be Ved Vyas amongst the sages, and Shukracharya amongst the great thinkers. || 37 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 38: दण्डो दमयतामस्मि नीतिरस्मि जिगीषताम् |मौनं चैवास्मि गुह्यानां ज्ञानं ज्ञानवतामहम् || 38|| daṇḍo damayatām asmi nītir asmi jigīṣhatāmmaunaṁ chaivāsmi guhyānāṁ jñānaṁ jñānavatām aham 🔴 I am just punishment amongst means of preventing lawlessness, and proper conduct amongst those who seek victory. Amongst secrets I am silence, and in the wise I am their wisdom. || 38 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 39: यच्चापि सर्वभूतानां बीजं तदहमर्जुन |न तदस्ति विना यत्स्यान्मया भूतं चराचरम् || 39|| yach chāpi sarva-bhūtānāṁ bījaṁ tad aham arjunana tad asti vinā yat syān mayā bhūtaṁ charācharam 🔴 I am the generating seed of all living beings, O Arjun. No creature moving or non-moving can exist without Me. || 39 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 40: नान्तोऽस्ति मम दिव्यानां विभूतीनां परन्तप |एष तूद्देशत: प्रोक्तो विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया || 40|| nānto ’sti mama divyānāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ parantapaeṣha tūddeśhataḥ prokto vibhūter vistaro mayā 🔴 There is no end to My divine manifestations, O conqueror of enemies. What I have declared to you is a mere sample of My infinite glories. || 40 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 41: यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा |तत्देवावगच्छ त्वं मम तेजोंऽशसम्भवम् || 41|| yad yad vibhūtimat sattvaṁ śhrīmad ūrjitam eva vātat tad evāvagachchha tvaṁ mama tejo ’nśha-sambhavam 🔴 Whatever you see as beautiful, glorious, or powerful, know it to spring from but a spark of My splendor. || 41 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 42: अथवा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन |विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत् || 42|| atha vā bahunaitena kiṁ jñātena tavārjunaviṣhṭabhyāham idaṁ kṛitsnam ekānśhena sthito jagat 🔴 What need is there for all this detailed knowledge, O Arjun? Simply know that by one fraction of My being, I pervade and support this entire creation. || 42 ||

Among fishes, too, I am the shark; I am Ganga among rivers. || 31 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 32: सर्गाणामादिरन्तश्च मध्यं चैवाहमर्जुन | अध्यात्मविद्या विद्यानां वाद: प्रवदतामहम् || 32|| sargāṇām ādir antaśh cha madhyaṁ chaivāham arjuna adhyātma-vidyā vidyānāṁ vādaḥ pravadatām aham 🔴 O Arjuna, of creations I am the beginning and the end as also the middle, I am the knowledge of the Self among knowledge; of those who date I am vada. || 32 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 33: अक्षराणामकारोऽस्मि द्वन्द्व: सामासिकस्य च | अहमेवाक्षय: कालो धाताहं विश्वतोमुख: || 33|| akṣharāṇām a-kāro ’smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya cha aham evākṣhayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṁ viśhvato-mukhaḥ 🔴 Of the letters I am the letter a, and of the group of compund words I am (the compound called) Dvandva. [Dvandva: A compound of two or more words which, if not compounded, would stand in the same case and be connected by the conjunction 'and'.-Tr.] I Mayself am the infinite time; I am the Dispenser with faces everywhere. || 33 ||

This series of talks unfolds the highest truths of Vedanta through the study of "The song of God". 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 23: रुद्राणां शङ्करश्चास्मि वित्तेशो यक्षरक्षसाम् | वसूनां पावकश्चास्मि मेरु: शिखरिणामहम् || 23|| rudrāṇāṁ śhaṅkaraśh chāsmi vitteśho yakṣha-rakṣhasām vasūnāṁ pāvakaśh chāsmi meruḥ śhikhariṇām aham 🔴 Among the Rudras [Aja, Ekapada, Ahirbudhnya, Pinaki, Aparajita, Tryam-baka, Mahesvara, Vrsakapi, Sambhu, Harana and Isvara. Different Puranas give different lists of eleven names.-Tr,] I am Sankara, and among the Yaksas and goblins I am Kubera [God of wealth. Yaksas are a class of demigods who attend on him and guard his wealth.]. Among the Vasus [According to the V.P. they are: Apa, dhruva, Soma, Dharma, Anila, Anala (Fire), Pratyusa and Prabhasa. The Mbh. and the Bh. given a different list.-Tr.] I am Fire, and among the mountains I am Meru. || 23 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 24: पुरोधसां च मुख्यं मां विद्धि पार्थ बृहस्पतिम् | सेनानीनामहं स्कन्द: सरसामस्मि सागर: || 24|| purodhasāṁ cha mukhyaṁ māṁ viddhi pārtha bṛihaspatim senānīnām ahaṁ skandaḥ sarasām asmi sāgaraḥ 🔴 O son of Prtha, know me to be Brhaspati, the foremost among the priests of kings. Among comanders of armies I am Skanda; among large expanses of water I am the sea. || 24 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 25: महर्षीणां भृगुरहं गिरामस्म्येकमक्षरम् | यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि स्थावराणां हिमालय: || 25|| maharṣhīṇāṁ bhṛigur ahaṁ girām asmyekam akṣharam yajñānāṁ japa-yajño ’smi sthāvarāṇāṁ himālayaḥ 🔴 Among the great sages I am Bhrgu; of words I am the single syllable (Om) [Om is the best because it is the name as well as the symbol of Brahman.]. Among rituals I am the ritual of Japa [Japa, muttering prayers-repeating passages from the Vedas, silently repeating names of deities, etc. Rituals often involve killing of animals. But Japa is free from such injury, and hence the best.] of the immovables, the Himalaya. || 25 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 26: अश्वत्थ: सर्ववृक्षाणां देवर्षीणां च नारद: | गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथ: सिद्धानां कपिलो मुनि: || 26|| aśhvatthaḥ sarva-vṛikṣhāṇāṁ devarṣhīṇāṁ cha nāradaḥ gandharvāṇāṁ chitrarathaḥ siddhānāṁ kapilo muniḥ 🔴 Among all trees (I am) the Asvatha (peepul), and Narada among the divine sages. Among the dandharvas [A class of demigods regarded as the musicians of gods.] (I am) Citraratha; among the perfected ones, the sage Kapila. || 26 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 27: उच्चै:श्रवसमश्वानां विद्धि माममृतोद्भवम् | ऐरावतं गजेन्द्राणां नराणां च नराधिपम् || 27|| uchchaiḥśhravasam aśhvānāṁ viddhi mām amṛitodbhavam airāvataṁ gajendrāṇāṁ narāṇāṁ cha narādhipam 🔴 Among horses, know Me to be Uccaihsravas, born of nectar; Airavata among the lordly elephants; and among men, the King of men. [Uccaihsravas and Airavata are respectively the divine horse and elephant of Indra.] || 27 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 28: आयुधानामहं वज्रं धेनूनामस्मि कामधुक् | प्रजनश्चास्मि कन्दर्प: सर्पाणामस्मि वासुकि: || 28|| āyudhānām ahaṁ vajraṁ dhenūnām asmi kāmadhuk prajanaśh chāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇām asmi vāsukiḥ 🔴 Among weapons I am the thunderbolt; among cows I am kamadhenu. I am Kandarpa, the Progenitor, and among serpents I am Vasuki. || 28 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 29: अनन्तश्चास्मि नागानां वरुणो यादसामहम् | पितृणामर्यमा चास्मि यम: संयमतामहम् || 29|| anantaśh chāsmi nāgānāṁ varuṇo yādasām aham pitṝīṇām aryamā chāsmi yamaḥ sanyamatām aham 🔴 Among snakes I am Ananta, and Varuna among gods of the waters. Among the manes I am Aryama, and among the maintainers of law and order I am Yama (King of death). || 29 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 30: प्रह्लादश्चास्मि दैत्यानां काल: कलयतामहम् | मृगाणां च मृगेन्द्रोऽहं वैनतेयश्च पक्षिणाम् || 30|| prahlādaśh chāsmi daityānāṁ kālaḥ kalayatām aham mṛigāṇāṁ cha mṛigendro ’haṁ vainateyaśh cha pakṣhiṇām 🔴 Among demons I am Prahlada, and I am Time among reckoners of time. And among animals I am the loin, and among birds I am Garuda. || 30 ||

(See Comm. on 10.7)] how shall I know You by remaining ever-engaged in meditation? And through what objects, O Lord, are You to be meditated on by me? || 17 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 18: विस्तरेणात्मनो योगं विभूतिं च जनार्दन | भूय: कथय तृप्तिर्हि शृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम् || 18 || vistareṇātmano yogaṁ vibhūtiṁ cha janārdana bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛiptir hi śhṛiṇvato nāsti me ’mṛitam 🔴 O Janardana, narrate to me again [In addition to what has been said in the seventh and ninth chapters.] Your onw yoga and (divine) manifestations elaborately. For, while hearing (Your) nectar-like (words), there is no satiety in me. || 18 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 19: श्रीभगवानुवाच | हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतय: | प्राधान्यत: कुरुश्रेष्ठ नास्त्यन्तो विस्तरस्य मे || 19 || śhrī bhagavān uvācha hanta te kathayiṣhyāmi divyā hyātma-vibhūtayaḥ prādhānyataḥ kuru-śhreṣhṭha nāstyanto vistarasya me 🔴 The Blessed Lord said O best of the Kurus, now, according to their importance, I shall described to you My onw glories, which are indeed divine. There is no end to my manifestations. || 19 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 20: अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थित: | अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च || 20 || aham ātmā guḍākeśha sarva-bhūtāśhaya-sthitaḥ aham ādiśh cha madhyaṁ cha bhūtānām anta Eva cha 🔴 O Gudakesa, I am the Self residing in the hearts of all beings, and I am the beginning and the middle as also the end of (all) beings. || 20 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 21: आदित्यानामहं विष्णुर्ज्योतिषां रविरंशुमान् | मरीचिर्मरुतामस्मि नक्षत्राणामहं शशी || 21 || ādityānām ahaṁ viṣhṇur jyotiṣhāṁ ravir anśhumān marīchir marutām asmi nakṣhatrāṇām ahaṁ śhaśhī 🔴 Among the Adityas [viz Dhata, Mitra, aryama, Rudra, Varuna, Surya, Bhaga, Vivasvan, Pusa, Savita, Tvasta and Visnu.-Tr.] I am Visnu; among the luminaries, the radiant sun; among the (forty-nine) Maruts [The seven groups of Maruts are Avaha, Pravaha, Vivaha, Paravaha, Udvaha, Samvaha and parivaha.-Tr.] I am Marici; among the stars I am the moon. || 21 || 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 22: वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि देवानामस्मि वासव: | इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि भूतानामस्मि चेतना || 22 || vedānāṁ sāma-vedo ’smi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ indriyāṇāṁ manaśh chāsmi bhūtānām asmi chetanā 🔴 Among the Vedas I am Sama-veda; among the gods I am Indra. Among the organs I am the mind, and I am the intelligence in creatures. || 22 ||

This series of talks unfolds the highest truths of Vedanta through the study of "The song of God". 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 12: अर्जुन उवाच परं ब्रह्म परं धाम पवित्रं परमं भवान्। पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यमादिदेवमजं विभुम्।।10.12।। arjuna uvāca paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyam ādidevam ajaṃ vibhum ||10.12|| 🔴 Arjuna said Thou art the Supreme Brahman, the supreme abode (or the supreme light), the supreme purifier, eternal, divine Person, the primeval God, unborn andn omnipresent. 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 13: आहुस्त्वामृषयः सर्वे देवर्षिर्नारदस्तथा। असितो देवलो व्यासः स्वयं चैव ब्रवीषि मे ।।10.13।। āhus tvām ṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣir nāradas tathā asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṃ caiva bravīṣi me ||10.13|| 🔴 All the sages have thus declared Thee, as also the divine sage Narada; so also Asita, Devala and Vyasa; and now Thou Thyself sayest so to me. 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 14: सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव। न हि ते भगवन् व्यक्ितं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः ।।10.14।। sarvam etad ṛtaṃ manye yan māṃ vadasi keśava na hi te bhagavan vyaktiṃ vidur devā na dānavāḥ ||10.14|| 🔴 I believe all this that Thou sayest to me to be true, O Krishna; verily, O blessed Lord! neither the gods nor the demons know Thy manifestation (origin). 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 15: स्वयमेवात्मनाऽत्मानं वेत्थ त्वं पुरुषोत्तम। भूतभावन भूतेश देवदेव जगत्पते।।10.15।। svayam evātmanātmānaṃ vettha tvaṃ puruṣottama bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate ||10.15|| 🔴 Verily, Thou Thyself knowest Thyself by Thyself, O Supreme Person, O source and Lord of beings, O God of gods, O ruler of the world!

This series of talks unfolds the highest truths of Vedanta through the study of "The song of God". 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 10: तेषां सततयुक्तानां भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम्। ददामि बुद्धियोगं तं येन मामुपयान्ति ते।।10.10।। teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ yena mām upayānti te 🔴 To them who are ever devoted and worship Me with love, I grant that possession of wisdom by which they reach Me. 🔆 Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 11: तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थमहमज्ञानजं तमः। नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता।।10.11।। teṣām evānukampārtham aham ajñānajaṃ tamaḥ nāśayāmy ātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā 🔴 Out of compassion for them alone, I, residing in their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the luminous lamp of Knowledge.

M.S. also takes papa-yonayah (born of sin) as a separate phrase, and classifies women and others only as those darred from Vedic study, etc.-Tr.]-, even they reach the highest Goal by taking shelter under Me. 🔆Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 9 Verse 33: किं पुनर्ब्राह्मणाः पुण्या भक्ता राजर्षयस्तथा।अनित्यमसुखं लोकमिमं प्राप्य भजस्व माम्।।9.33।। kiṃ punar brāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayas tathā anityam asukhaṃ lokam imaṃ prāpya bhajasva mām ।।9.33।। 🔴 What to speak of the holy Brahmanas as also of devout kind-sages!
