Candid conversation alert! Cozy up with me and my friend Sarah Ezrin where we talk about teaching yoga, being moms and why we strengthen our nervous systems by visualizing our children falling from the monkey bars at playgrounds while performing pranayama techniques (not kidding!).

Sarah started out working in the adrenaline-fueled film industry. Then, took that "hustle energy" into her yoga teacher career, resulting in burnout. After much heartbreak and loss, she wasn't sure she ever wanted children, but now applies ancient yogic wisdom to motherhood. This is a beautiful listen for any yoga teachers, prospective parents or those with kids at home.

GUEST EXPERT: Sarah Ezrin | Buy The Yoga of Parenting book

Sarah Ezrin is a world-renowned yoga educator, content creator, and mama of two boys. Sarah writes extensively on the subjects of yoga, parenting, and mental health, often interweaving these themes. She is a regular contributor for Yoga Journal Magazine, Motherly, Yoga International, Healthline, and Scary Mommy. Sarah loves guiding people along their wellness and parenthood journeys. Her writing, classes, and social media are supportive, healing spaces where people can feel seen and heard.

It's time to redefine the idea of "sadhana," shift into devotion, realize you're not "alone" when you practice, and to make your time on the mat the highlight of your day.

Listen and learn:

🔹The etymology of the word "sadhana" 🔹How this concept evolved in the Gita and Bhakti Yoga, and ways to use these lesser-known aspects of sadhana for your benefit 🔹Why revitalizing your home practice requires introspection, a hefty dose of pleasure, and does not need to take as much time as you think

EPIC conversation alert!!! Today I get *in it* with one of my visionary friends, Katie Silcox, founder of Shakti School. Through concrete examples like online dating, your dog getting bitten, your husband's obsession with drainage and house maintenance, Katie and I weave deep lessons on tantra, polarity and somatics. Listen and learn:

🔹Why somatic work alone isn't enough and can become a "feeling trap"

🔹How massive amounts of shakti energy are stored beneath your shame

🔹Exactly what releasing irritation looks like from a "yogic" perspective taking into account tantric and buddhist teachings.

Buckle up, yogis. This conversation might take you places you never thought possible.

GUEST EXPERT: Katie Silcox | @theshaktischool

Katie Silcox, M.A. is the New York Times Best-Selling author of the book Healthy, Happy, Sexy - Ayurveda Wisdom for Modern Women and the upcoming new book - Glow-Worthy. I bet you thought the goal of yoga was to achieve samadhi or enlightenment, right? WRONG. More precisely, yoga is about dismantling the 5 kleshas (obstacles) which prevent us from realizing that samadhi (bliss) is our natural state. Deep dive with me into eleven critical epithets: Verses 2.1 to 2.11 of the Yoga Sutras, where I'll give the often overlooked kleshas - the obstacles and afflictions that cause suffering - the attention they deserve. Discover:

🔹 Why the concept of avidya (ignorance) is often mistranslated and misunderstood

🔹 How the kleshas aren't created equal, but actually function in a hierarchy

🔹 How to "grade" your kleshas using Patanjali's framework

🔹 Why the kleshas likely won't be eliminated (no matter how much you practice), but how you can leverage them to become more discerning in your day-to-day life.

If you enjoyed the episodes where I've read the Yoga Sutras aloud, you will love this nerdy episode.

Grief as a Potent Healer with Kris Carr

49 min
View

During my father's cancer battle, I stayed busy. After he died, I refused to grieve for fear of completely breaking down. If only I had Kris Carr's incredible new book on mourning which we dive deep into in this week's episode. You may know Kris as a best-selling author and wellness leader, who's been thriving with stage IV cancer for more than 20 years. But what shook her to her core was not her own cancer journey, but the death of her father to pancreatic cancer in recent years. Today, we connect around both our fathers' passing and share all our best tips with you around fear, uncertainty, death, and spiritual growth. Learn:

🔹What is a "rupture" and how do we care for ourselves in times of rupture?

🔹The difference between fear and anxiety, and why anxiety is a "habit"

🔹Why anger is an "iceberg" that accompanies grief and how to cope with intense emotions.

🔹How to cultivate faith the unseen and turn your life into a treasure hunt to connect with those who have passed on.

If you've lost a parent, child, or loved-one, do NOT miss this episode with one of our era's wellness leaders.

Join me as we discuss embodiment from a neurodevelopmental perspective with incredible physical therapist Lara Heiman. Do you love sinking into a low lunge? Lingering in hip openers? Flowing through feel-good movements? (My hand is raised!) While all of this is okay, our most sophisticated practice develops when we prioritize stability over mobility. In particular, when we truly honor the pelvis as our seat of power.

Listen and learn:

A practicing physical therapist and yoga teacher for 27 years, Lara received both her undergraduate and graduate education from Duke University and as a licensed physical therapist, continued her studies with a Post Grad specialization in Neurodevelopmental Training with Recovering Function Organization through Stanford University. Combining her educational background in physiological studies and her passion for movement, Lara completed her 200-hour teacher training. After several years of teaching, she began to notice a void in the inclusion of anatomy in the conversations of yoga training. In the years to follow, Lara began to refine the LYT Yoga Method, combining physiology, kinesiology, neurology, and functional movement patterns to yield a more cohesive movement philosophy.

🔹Practical functional movement tips to honor pelvic stability in your personal practice or public teaching

🔹Why you and your students' hips may actually be "tight" due to overstretching

🔹The importance of touching your body to provide feedback so you can change "the inputs" in yoga postures and find "side doors" that reconnect you to your most embodied self.

We hear so often that you should "embody the next best version of yourself" and then "become it." BUT HOW? Especially when your current reality is *nothing like* the reality you're attempting to manifest. Or there's zero proof of things going your way?

Buckle up for this deep exploration of identity, adversity and emotion with one of my favorite conversation partners, Tracy Litt. We talk about practical steps you can take when "rubber meets the road" and your nervous system is in a state of hyperarousal, dragging you into old patterns. We put concrete examples of my own life, marriage and blocks through Tracy's framework so you can see her method in action. Get ready to learn:

🔹Why affirmations and staying "high vibe" are a band-aid solution to your wounds – and what to do instead.

🔹How your programmed not to *feel* by society and practical steps to fix this

🔹What to do if you feel like by expressing big emotions like grief or rage, that you'll open "Pandora's box" and never be able to stop.

"Trauma informed" Kundalini Yoga may sound like an oxymoron. Today, we unpack why and what to do about it. I'm joined by Uplifted Lead Teacher Trainer, E-RYT 500+ Katrina Marie, who has a background in biological sciences, somatics, and a deep love of yoga, especially Kundalini. She is the author of a meditative trauma healing journal for women, a virtual and local studio owner, and one of our very own lead teacher trainers on all three of our Uplifted trainings. Get ready to learn:

🔹Why Kundalini Yoga can lead to a break-through or break-down, depending where you're at in your journey

🔹The Trauma Conscious Model of how to experience (or teach) Kundalini kriyas

🔹What makes Kundalini kriyas and meditations are better suited to healing trauma than others

🔹Why resiliency is overrated

🔹The difference between big "T" and little "t" trauma

🔹Amazing trauma conscious cues you can say when teaching a Kundalini Yoga class.

Katrina survived an eating disorder, a school shooting and an abusive marriage. Kundalini Yoga was the game changer in her healing. So many trauma survivors could benefit from Kundalini Yoga, but they are intimidated. Find out why it doesn't have to be that way.

Key trauma informed phrases from Katrina:

✅"Do ____ for as long as feels comfortable"

✅"Try this on"

✅"You have a choice to _____________"

*This episode assumes you know what Kundalini Yoga is and have experienced fundamental Kundalini mantras and meditations such as Kirtan Kriya. If you need help getting up to speed, please explore the recommended practices and listening below.

Kundalini yoga is a deeply spiritual practice. In fact, many say that the Kundalini process can lead to a spiritual awakening. And while spiritual enlightenment sounds like a really good thing, it can come with a whole lot of intense experiences (headaches, nausea, YUCK).

The way that yoga talks about this spiritual experience is through the Kundalini process, where prana (life force energy) moves through the subtle body (aka your spinal column) until it reaches the Sahasrara Chakra at the top of your head…

…to awaken Kundalini.

Before you go chasing the Kundalini experience (like I did), take some time to get acquainted with the Kundalini awakening process. There are a few things you should know about awakened Kundalini, first.

And then I'll share my tips on how to use this ancient practice to achieve your own spiritual awakening too.

So buckle up. We are about to embark on a spiritual journey.

What is Kriya Yoga? How Does it Work?

24 min
View

What is Kriya Yoga? It depends who you ask! In this episode, I work to demystify this term. We look at how "kriya yoga" is interpreted by

🔹 Paramhansa Yogananda

🔹 Ayurveda

🔹 Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras

In this episode we talk about Yoga Sutra 2.1 and why I'm obsessed with this idea of "yoga in action" alluded to by "kriya yoga." Jumping from a basic asana practice, where you move through each yoga posture for physical benefits, to a spiritual practice as outlined by the kriya yoga tradition can be a little confusing. But it doesn't have to be! Listen to this episode to learn more.

I used to hear the word "boundary" and thought that it meant putting up an energetic brick wall. This was not fun (and not feasible). In today's episode, I share practical tips about what I've learned on setting and holding boundaries with an open heart. Most of us have been conditioned to think that "boundaries = confrontation" and even physically tense up when we have to hold a boundary or say "no." The tips I share today will help with that:

🔹Notice boundaries in nature

🔹Make your boundaries intensely personal (even if they are outlandish)

I used to hear the word "boundary" and thought that it meant putting up an energetic brick wall. This was not fun (and not feasible). In today's episode, I share practical tips about what I've learned on setting and holding boundaries with an open heart. Most of us have been conditioned to think that "boundaries = confrontation" and even physically tense up when we have to hold a boundary or say "no." The tips I share today will help with that:

🔹Notice boundaries in nature

🔹Make your boundaries intensely personal (even if they are outlandish)

🔹Get clear and accept the boundary within yourself self (otherwise you can't expect anyone else to uphold it

🔹Deliver your boundary with an open heart

Gratitude to one of my teachers, Kednra Cunov, who inspired the tips in this episode.

Killing the Self Care Buzzword

28 min

Ugh… that annoying "self care" word again. It's overused. We know we should be doing it. But what is it really? Today, I attempt to dissect and lift the veil on what self care truly means (hint, it's not just bubble baths). Listen and discover:

🔹The two-pronged "carrot and stick" approach to self care and how this relates back to the Yoga Sutras

🔹Why self care is an act of courage and not a luxury thing for the rich or "bougie"

🔹How an absence of self love manifests in toxic ways in our relationships

🔹How to have grace and compassion for yourself AND accountability and ownership

Let's talk SNAKES! 🐍 And join me for the upcoming Kali Yoga Challenge. You may know that Kundalini has been historically represented through the symbol of the serpent, but why? Why a snake? As most ancient yogic translations, it all starts with Sanskrit. The translation of "Kundalini Shakti" from Sanskrit to English is "Serpent Power".

This coincides with the movement of energy released within your body from the base of the spine up through the crown. This Kundalini energy is said to be like a snake, coiled at the base of the spine waiting to be released to your highest power. Symbolically this energy also moves like a serpent and is awakened by specific meditation and consciousness techniques.

In this episode, I nerd-out on all things Kundalini. The iconography of the snake, cross-cultural significance of the serpent, and why this knowledge is essential to unlocking the full potential of your personal practice.

Kundalini yoga is unlike any other type of yoga that you might practice. Where hatha yoga and vinyasa flow might focus on the physical exercises (asana) that yoga has to offer, Kundalini focuses on the spiritual practice of yoga. It's about the energy body as opposed to the physical body.

Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds.

Kundalini Yoga is the "yoga of awareness," and we unpack exactly what that means in this juicy episode.

Often teachers ask us to "set an intention" when coming to our yoga mat -- but what does that actually mean? And how do we do this? What if having to set an agenda for our practice triggers us or feels like extra work? In this episode, I cover 3 key methods of "intention setting," how you can use intentions to get key questions about your life answered, and even how to heal yourself (and loved ones) with the power of your practice.

Today's special episode is a guided, energetic clearing exercise with Art Giser. Let's deprogram what's not serving us! For the first fifteen minutes of this episode, Art explains how the exercise works, what to expect and how we can see the negative energy of others as a gift. I ask him about INTUITION and what role it plays in NLP. According to Art, oftentimes what we think is our intuition could be subconscious programming we've inherited. The second fifteen minutes of this episode is a powerful, guided, energy clearing visualization with Art. Sit or lie down. Get comfy. I had incredible insights doing this one! Enjoy!

Art Giser is the creator of Energetic NLP. He is an internationally renowned NLP trainer, intuitive, and healer. Art's unique and diverse background includes NLP, spirituality, coaching, transformative and healing energy work, and intuition development. Our guest, yoga teacher Kelly Smith, was a Savasana-skipper before discovering the subtler aspects of yoga. Now, she teaches meditation and Yoga Nidra almost exclusively! Today she shares her personal story as well as tons of fantastic tips. We cover: What to do if your mind is racing during Savasana or meditation. The pros and cons of guided versus non-guided meditations. Are "guided" meditations a crutch? We end with her shortlist on how to create (and teach fantastic!) guided meditations for your students, family or friends. If you want to create meditations or start meditating, this episode will inspire you!

---

Kelly Smith is an E-RYT 500, YACEP, founder of Yoga For You, and host of the iTunes chart topping podcast, Mindful in Minutes. Kelly believes that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to yoga and meditation and cultivates an environment that empowers her students to listen to their bodies, explore their personal practice through more than just yoga poses, and to find joy and gratitude for the life they have. Kelly specializes in one-on-one yoga and meditation teaching/training and unique workshops and retreats for students of all levels, and mentors yoga teachers who are ready to grow their practice and thrive in their teaching.

Let's go a layer deeper than we normally do when talking about the chakra system.

Sure, we know the Root Chakra is about "safety" and "security," but what does that mean at an energetic, soul level? Why is mastery of the lower 4 chakras so essential to our success in the world? Sharing examples from my own life, I discuss how you can unpack and decode these energy centers to figure out what energetic patterns are blocking you. Let's do this! Join me for a special New Year's Eve workshop to go deeper at: www.brettlarkin.com/nye

Anyone who has ever been a teacher, healer, service professional or cared for an ailing love one, will love this heartfelt episode.

How do we shake off the programming we inherit from our parents and our culture? How do we notice when we're living in a particular energetic pattern, and break free? How do we learn to cherish or own unique, innate value? To get in touch with our own soul? These are the questions I explore today with Lee McCormick, author of the The Heart Reconnection Guidebook: A Guided Journey of Personal Discovery and Self-Awareness. Behind the roles you play in life – mother, father, wife, husband, employee – who ARE you, really? Listen to this deep, contemplative interview with Lee to get your wheels turning.

More description

How do we shake off the programming we inherit from our parents and our culture? How do we notice when we're living in a particular energetic pattern, and break free? How do we learn to cherish or own unique, innate value? To get in touch with our own soul? These are the questions I explore today with Lee McCormick, author of the The Heart Reconnection Guidebook: A Guided Journey of Personal Discovery and Self-Awareness. Behind the roles you play in life – mother, father, wife, husband, employee – who ARE you, really? Listen to this deep, contemplative interview with Lee to get your wheels turning.
