Most families become caregivers before anyone tells them what help exists.

In this episode of From Guilt to Good, Jeanette Yates talks with Lance A. Slatton, host of All Home Care Matters, senior care advocate, author, healthcare professional, and president of AlzAuthors.

Lance shares how caregiving entered his life unexpectedly when his father needed serious medical care after a fall, infection, surgery, and a long recovery. What was supposed to be “a couple of weeks” of support turned into almost three years of caregiving. During that time, Lance realized how little guidance families often receive, even as they move through hospitals, rehab, home healthcare, and veteran care systems.

Together, Jeanette and Lance discuss why caregivers often do not know what resources are available, why asking for help can feel like guilt or failure, and how outside support can actually help family members return to being a spouse, son, daughter, or loved one — not only “the caregiver.”

They also talk about the origin of All Home Care Matters, the role of AlzAuthors in helping families find trusted dementia and Alzheimer’s resources, and the promise and limits of AI and caregiving technology.

This conversation is for any caregiver who feels overwhelmed, under-supported, or unsure where to begin.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why caregiving often begins unexpectedly
  • Why families do not know what help exists
  • The guilt many caregivers feel when asking for support
  • Why bringing in help is still caregiving
  • How healthcare systems can better support family caregivers
  • Trusted dementia and Alzheimer’s resources through AlzAuthors
  • AI, caregiver technology, and where families need to be careful
  • Why caregivers should be recognized as part of the healthcare system

Caregivers are used to being “on call” for the person they care for. But what happens when the person blowing up your phone is just as stressful as the person you’re caring for—and you can’t simply block or mute them?

In this episode of From Guilt to Good, Jeanette talks with Sol Kennedy, founder of BestInterest, an AI-powered co-parenting communication app built to help people navigate high-conflict relationships after divorce. Sol shares how his own high-conflict divorce and co-parenting experience led him to create what he calls an “emotional firewall”—a layer of protection between you and hostile digital messages that keeps your nervous system, your legal safety, and your peace in mind.

Together, they explore what constant digital conflict and phone notifications do to your body, why delaying your response can be one of the most powerful boundaries you set, and how tools like BestInterest can filter out harmful messages while surfacing true emergencies. They also talk about codependency, the fear of being “the bad guy” when you set boundaries, and simple, concrete steps caregivers can take—today—to create enough space to heal, even when they can’t walk away from a difficult relationship.

The other day, I posted a 15-second clip on TikTok that went viral. Some people were so thankful for my quick thoughts, and others said I was a really big jerk!

What was all the fuss about? Sometimes, what we think of as caregiving is really enabling behavior.

In this week's episode, we explore the fine line between supporting and caring for our loved ones without detriment to ourselves or shirking our caregiving responsibilities.

And I’ll be giving more context to explain the difference between healthy acts of care and those that can potentially be enabling and harmful to our loved ones and us.

Let’s dive into how we can support our loved ones in ways that empower them rather than undermine their independence and well-being.

My guest, Rebecca Sugar, became the family caregiver for her ailing father, as well as her elderly family friend and childhood nanny as she neared the end of her life.

Rebecca learned how to be a family caregiver on the job, taking responsibility for her elderly father through multiple spinal cord surgeries at the age of 79. It was an emotional rollercoaster, and she hopes that her personal experience and insight with a spiritual undertone will resonate with those who can relate.

Self-awareness and connectedness with self is key for creating sustainable self-care practices, but what if you've been turning down your intuitive voice for so long that you cannot hear it?

What if when you do connect with your inner feelings, you feel re-traumatized or depressed, or even scared?

Today's guest, Angela Turke, LMHC, CRC joins us again on the podcast to talk about why therapy might be an appropriate self-care choice for some overwhelmed caregivers.

*please note: I am not a therapist, just a person sharing my personal and life-long journey as a caregiver, self-care coach and advocate for caregivers, especially those in recovery. I share my experience and insights in hopes they will inspire other caregivers to give themselves the same compassionate care they give their loved ones. The first step to taking better care of yourself is learning to listen to yourself.

It sounds simple, but it can be difficult for people, like us, who are used to listening to what everyone else needs. It's easier to turn down what our bodies and minds are telling us because we don't have the time or energy to "deal" with all of our needs too.

So how can we learn to listen to ourselves again? In this week's episode, we talk about self-awareness, intuition, and why it matters for sustainable self-care.

What if I told you to stop putting on your oxygen mask FIRST. Instead, I want you to put it on PERIOD.

Yes, it is true that we should take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others, we can’t pour from an empty cup…but...

If the only reason we are caring for ourselves is so that we can care for others, then what are we really saying? What is the implication there? That if we had no one else to care for, our care would not be valid?

In today’s episode, we dive deep into the powerful notion that caregivers not only need to take care of themselves to better care for others but because they are worthy of love, care, and attention as individuals.

Caregivers often find themselves entangled in the intricate webs of responsibilities, leaving their own needs and desires unattended. But to provide balanced care, we first need to understand and respect our own needs and cultivate self-awareness about who we are and what our capacity is for caregiving and self-care.  Clarity forms a foundation by which all other decisions are made, from boundaries with your loved ones to the types of self-care practices you pursue. With a comprehensive understanding of our strengths, limitations, desires, and aspirations, we are better equipped to navigate the unpredictable terrains of caregiving because we create our own expectations and experiences.

What does it take to feel GOOD, not GUILTY when it comes to caregiving?

Today's episode is the first in a series, "How to Become an Empowered (Self-)Caregiver"

In my ongoing quest to create self-care that helps me feel good and not guilty, I’ve done it ALL. With a bunch of trial and error, training, certifications, and sessions, I've learned what it takes to create a sustainable self-care practice that caregivers like me and you can use even in the midst of the ups and downs of caregiving. I developed- The C.A.R.E Framework based on all of my experiences over the last 20 years and am excited to teach it to you. This framework empowers caregivers by giving them **C**larity, encouraging self- **A**dvocacy, cultivating **R**esilience, and instilling **E**njoyment in the self-care process.

This first episode of the series unpacks my breakthrough framework to transform your self-care AND the very process I’ll be teaching in the upcoming EMPOWERED Self-Caregiver Cohort beginning January 2024.

Today on the podcast, we’ll be hearing from a member of The Self-Caregiver Community, Jodie Pearson who’ll share with us about her unique caregiving experience and her journey of self-care through it all. Jodie’s career, spanning over 45 years, was approached with a foundation of service to others. No matter the position held, and even into retirement, Jodie’s passion was and is to bring knowledge, experience, and tons of encouragement to others. She often describes herself using terms like

·   A great pep-talker!

·   Self-reinventor

·   Self-mindset creator and challenger

Jodie’s first experience with personal caregiving was at 25 when she took care of her father after having a leg amputated. She has since survived the loss of her mother and father, all of her four older siblings within an 18-month period and the suicide of her former husband. She currently supports her husband who lives with rapidly increasing limitation of motion and the constant pain that comes with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

As a family caregiver, Jodie has felt both on top of the world as well as defeated and depleted. It is through these ups and downs that she has created self-care tactics that she refers to as “reinventing” herself by challenging herself to think differently as needed.

If you want to continue the conversation with Jodie and meet other caregivers learning self-care practices that make them feel good, not guilty, JOIN THE SELF-CAREGIVER COMMUNITY!

In this week's episode, I interviewed my good friend and fellow caregiver who has walked through this journey and shared much wisdom with me about caregiving, parenting, and grieving loss while still moving forward with her own life, goals, and purpose.

Rachel's story is encouraging, inspiring, and heart-felt. She shares how she was intentional with her time, created and maintained boundaries, and practiced self-care in the midst of her mom's last few months on earth.

She also shares how grief has changed in the years since her mom passed away and how she continues to remember her without feeling stuck in her grief.

Caregivers often struggle with finding time to create a consistent workout routine. We know we need physical exercise, but trying to find the time to do it when everyone else needs our time and attention can be exhausting.

We feel guilty for not working out, but we feel guilty for spending time on ourselves when we do.

But what if we thought of working out or exercise as MOVEMENT?

What if that movement was about making us feel GOOD, not GUILTY?

Our guest today, Jamie Carbaugh is a Virtual Personal Trainer Group Fitness Instructor and founder of FitRaggamuffin. Her non-diet movement channel teaches her clients joyful movement for reasons beyond the scale.

In this episode we talk about the REAL benefits of moving your body and how you can incorporate joyful movement into your busy caregiving schedule without the guilt!
