You're listening to the latest Radcast news update.
     Here's Ryan and Riley.
     Hey guys, what's up?
It's Ryan all for welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast.
It's the marketing and news episode here on Friday, April 30th, 2021, where the hell did
April go Josh how's it going good to have Josh Hill or director of digital media digital
media guru digital just junky yeah kind of a dope your digital junky aren't you yeah
that's pretty accurate I know is our digital marketing manager digital media manager
and all around all things digital media and he's joined me on media ad gabs Riley's out
today on a Friday so it's you and me brother yes my first news episode I know hey just
got to get it out there yeah talk about new new news news yeah it's been a good week
we we wrapped up a lot of build up you know to get ready for events we had GVL hustle last
night which is a local networking community culture event it was very successful and roughly
a hundred people 80 to 100 I didn't get an exact head count but a nice very nice turnout
and noisims who actually just pulled out of the agencies is left was here cooking did you
get you some corn oh yes what was the technical name a low-tay a low-tay so good and heard
that before did you heard a low-tay yeah for the vibe then I don't want to get street food
okay it's so good so good corn smoked corn mixed with cheeses and it's kind of like street corn
mayonnaise and cheese and jalapenos and lime and if I'm making you hungry then eat your heart
out baby yeah it was not ready for corn to taste that good no I mean it was I it's definitely
probably one of the better corn I think maybe the best corn I've ever had yeah but he was a trip
talking you know entertaining telling everybody about food and palate and everything else and
had a lot of great networking and get Q&A at the end so very successful local event we like to do
those things to get back to the community raised a lot of money several thousand dollars I do believe
for project host here locally and they feed the hungry and grainville amongst many other things
to do a lot of great things that we were proud to sponsor them and I get through all of those
festivities on a foggy Friday yeah I you know I had a few adult beverages last night you know so
I'm about to shame to say yeah I mean Makers Mark came out we had a local brewery we didn't want to
make them feel I don't think I feel bad I wouldn't want them to think I didn't like it so you know
six IPAs later maybe seven I don't know oh yeah you know I mean you got to make sure the makers
I did avoid the make I like bourbon but I avoided the makers table I'm like it's not Friday night
it's Thursday night right and I like I didn't stay away from the bourbon table I got my days mixed up
then you weren't sure what night it was yeah okay it was my arm I did go home with some socks that I'm
not sure gonna fit me they we had a lot of our sponsors makers markets one of our sponsors
for the event they brought in some goodies at tastings and then they had socks with makers
market yeah was not did you get some socks I didn't but they looked great somehow they ended up
on my I got home or got up this morning and I'm like we're not remember these socks
but sure enough they were there so anyway good night all around it's been a good week at radical
we've been busy had a lot of new business calls this week and a lot of exciting stuff
happening a lot of growth a lot of new hires and like we're interviewing people every other day
yeah for real it's good but let me ask you this Josh before we get to the news what's like I know
you've been digging into some TikTok stuff and I know it what did you what you know we talked
a little pretty episode is it your number one platform on social media yeah easily yeah and so
I would say it's it's rising on my list the Instagram's always there more just because I get more
I get a lot of DM's just communication there so it pulls me there's just the push pull of where
I'm posting the most content where most people interact with me and then but the interest level
TikTok's there but what's the most interesting one of the most interesting things you've seen
this week oh man I mean always fans of the new trends happening and stuff but
been noticing a lot of like just high strangeness coming from like big brands where you would never
see it anywhere else you won't see it on Instagram or Facebook or anything but like one of my favorites
was from craft mac and cheese had just a CGI skeleton running with texts over it talking about
people not putting water in their mac and cheese before they like microwave it and they
caused accidents and it had just really calming music behind it um what if we can oh yes
if you imagine a skeleton running on a screen with that music but I was like it's like that's
insane and then I saw the like blue check mark and saw it was from craft itself I was like I like
this I like it when big corporations are kind of kicking their shoes off and just letting uh
having some fun we're getting this point where brands the ones that are doing it well or really kind
of you know letting their hair back you know and like it used to be polished already second commercials
at all times and this is it is but you know craft with me I'm with us in nudes yeah I love that
campaign they they they can't cancel cultured them in like one day they bowed under pressure but
that was awesome and then now everybody's kind of the democratization of content like it doesn't
have to be like beautiful it just has to be entertaining or weird or like I don't know it's
gotten so random yeah I tick-tock just random in general oh yeah it's um it'll it'll match
with me a milter brain it's great yes but I love it the I mean I just remember growing up with
craft commercials is always like the mom making lunch and a super wholesome and fun like happy family
and stuff and then now it's CGI skeletons walking around and send dudes and like this is way more fun
way more memorable but what do you think how's the discovery on tick-tock you know I'm still
I mean I've been on the platform for a year but like getting more and more into it like
is in in my usage my time on it's definitely just you know the feed you know like scrolling through
it obviously has the algorithm it has my golf tips here random videos here funny guy there like
you know intermixed with a lot of randomness but um I haven't do you use the search phone
are there certain things are you discovering is it still the feed kind of like natural discovery
are you like searching more and like looking up usually it's usually it's on the four you page
to show me random stuff um and then I'll kind of got looped in with my friends who will send me
uh they're funny tick-tocks that they think or they found and um but the search function is crazy
because I can search for something that was in the video and it wasn't in the caption or
like the hashtags or anything and I can still find it which is uh useful for going back out
sometimes I'll remember something like with my friends I'm like oh you have to see this one
     yeah that's I think that's I think I I'm using it more and I'm getting more but like I haven't
established if you know you have the habits you have in social media the keystrokes and the
where to put things what to do you know obviously you learn that every time and I certainly have a
few for tick-tock but I don't have like every one of them like I have on Instagram or link to
enter Facebook or whatever it's like mastering like exactly yeah you know how I'm saving this or
how I'm interacting with that or how I'm remembering this you know I'm still kind of getting there
yeah I need a tick-tock for that yeah tick-tock for dummies tick-tock for how to tick-tock yeah how
to how to tick-tock we're gonna take talk tick-tock yeah so uh cool well let's get to some news so
first on today's topics oh this really you know I think you found this and I was like you were like
I don't think I remember this and I'm like this is before you're talking and look it was almost
before my time this is like I think first introduced in the 80s yeah well like I was some staunch
you know college kid or something this is like my I think I was like six or something I don't know
like dominoes and the noid so it was a campaign in the 80s maybe even early 90s avoid the
noid was kind of that anti-hero um definitely a mascot driven they the old campaigns I do remember
it was always the noid was trying to get in the way of a proper pizza being delivered in some way
whether it was hijacking the driver or the cook or something it was the kind of anti-hero
getting in the way I think it was trying to depict maybe what the other experience or yeah
like maybe it's on the arrival arrival pizza person was trying to do that so that they didn't do
what they were supposed to be I don't know yeah they always had the uh the 30 minutes or less
and deliver it hot yeah noid had the ice gun to make the trouble make sure that didn't happen or
something yeah uh but now they've brought it back so what are some of the details that we found
with how they're bringing the campaign back yeah so they're kind of going for this like they're
going for the future and the past here they got the nostalgia from the noid but they're using it
as a way to promote their they're kind of beta testing like um doing autonomous delivery with
these like robot cars in Houston right now they started this week and so people's like select
customers in Houston can get dominoes pizza delivered by a robot car and the noids gonna try
to stop the robot car do you hear that do you hear that the future the future it's coming it's here
the future is here it's no longer out there that we have driverless cars officially and they're
delivering pizza hot to our door that's like you know they'll be talking about this forever but like
I don't know like I don't know why it scares the shit out of me thinking about uh driverless cars
like I know that there's some idiots on the road but something about the robot driving the cars
like getting two terminator for me or something yeah yeah but I mean they sneak it in with um
like what if we just deliver pizzas with it then it'll be fine exactly then he you know
the then the the robot's gonna be so smart like you shouldn't be eating pizza it's bad for you
or maybe they want to feed us pizza that way they can take over the world yeah
I don't know the pizza's gonna start um like putting like pineapple on it for people who don't like it
oh yeah exactly oh pineapple pizza you some people love that shit no I'm I hate it oh I'll take it
you like pineapple pizza I do with what other toppings though oh man like ham ham maybe bacon
chicken so good pepperoni is good with with pineapple I'm getting to where and Noah's open in my eyes
to this the sweet and the salty and all that kind of coming together but like I don't know like
that pineapple sweetness with the cheese pizzas like yeah you'll get there one day yeah let's
know in the DM's and in the comments what do you think of pineapple pizza yeah you're nay we need to
do it a poll yeah we released some of these highlights would you rather have pineapple under
pizza or pizza on your pineapple yeah pineapple is like I think of I just think of like a drink by
the pool you know like I'm having a pineapple smoothie or like a peanut calada man that's not
gonna be even that yeah like sunny and like 85 here like we've got a pool having a peanut calada
and a nice nap on the foggy Friday on the foggy Friday though but I like I like bringing about the
nostalgia a lot of campaigns doing that we've seen you know with the branding with McDonald's and
some of their packaging nostalgia the Burger King and their logo so you're seeing a lot of this
nostalgia marketing come back in different ways but you know I think we could stand for a few
more mascots and in the pizza wars or whatever you've got I'd like to see the noise and who's the
little seizures guy like get out yeah like a battle yeah that'd be great what is a little
Caesar he Caesar little Caesar is that his name I guess a little Caesar's pizza yeah yeah but they
don't really identify him go well here's little Caesar this is when you know is the name of the pizza
but like am I right I don't ever go little Caesar here he never he's never really had a speaking
part has that pizza pizza that's right as you bring that back pizza pizza it was great pizza pizza
oh yeah caveman so uh next on the news list I mean this is kind of a universal
trend that we talk about a lot but it's also newsworthy because Google Facebook and Amazon
the big three get bigger ad sales are going through the roof especially digital media ad sales
specifically for these guys so Google reported 32 percent increases in ad sales Facebook was 46
percent Amazon a whopping year-over-year increase of 77 percent in ad sales first impressions from all
of that wow because you know there's the number increased from was not a small number no we're talking
billions yeah you know and then it went up from there yes but yeah it's kind of shocking at first
but then it's like yeah make sense and I think a key thing to remember is like yeah increase massively
but some people might be like oh well it's not gonna increase that much next year or it's gonna
like go down next year I highly doubt that like I don't think this is gonna stop anytime soon it's
just gonna keep going what um you know you think people don't realize this like I think the
every if you're in the industry you do but you know Amazon like increased sales revenue overall like
another whopping some billion number I don't have the exact number for the sales as much as the
percentage on the ads but people don't recognize the amount of ad dollars that Amazon gets like
the everyday person they think yeah they think okay yeah they're selling a lot of product and
Amazon's making a lot of money selling a lot of those products and the people selling those products
make it but the ad infrastructure that's behind all of that the recommended products the top of
the search funnel like when you search for summer and discovery it's no different like yeah it's
I mean Amazon's not putting that there because they they want you to buy it like someone's paying to
put that there exact sponsored content folks when you see that sponsor above it they pay to be there
doesn't necessarily mean it is the best tank top you need with that other tank talk if you're
buying it just means that someone's bought the ad space to be put in front of you while you're
shopping for other things like this so I do think that for the most part Amazon hides their ads well
yeah they make it very look very native very native I think they do a really good job like I think
that's why people are like probably hearing this if you're not in everyday media ad buying or
something like that may or may not be a surprise but you know I mean I think people are starting to
understand that sponsored means something but I even my eye sometimes my eye is not my eye does not
catch this you know the sponsor term or something like out and I'm thinking it's like you know a
recommendation based on you know preference or what you know right some other algorithm that smart
that's related to what I would want or the quality of it when it's just it's a paid ad yeah definitely
especially you do the sort by like top reviews and then you see the sponsor one above it and it's
got like two reviews and it's like yeah that one's the best one yeah I'm buying this pair of shorts
and suddenly there's this you know floral print shirt and I'm like you know I don't wear floral
print shirt but you know my wine shirt we had the the CMO of shiny steel on our last podcast
talking about a event party wear oh yes that's quite intriguing it just we haven't even released it
yet but that's going to be coming out and hilarious so are you an event are you a big
vent party go like you know themed party yeah yeah like I like theme parties yeah I need to expand
that wardrobe of mine get some options yeah you go check them out but yeah that was a good talk
but the bigger getting bigger I mean they joke we read about it you see it especially being
in the industry the big three and they are just increasing and I think you're seeing Facebook
bounce back a little bit from there's still a little in warm water I'd call it but you know
with all the privacy and all the stuff they've been going through but the reality is and we've
seen it a little bit with our spending you know the ad dollar the pricing is creeping up cost per
impression and things like that we see those metrics change from time to time you start seeing them
bumping up and yeah more demand yeah then supply at times yeah more more of that a lot of people
are getting on the internet for the first time ever like it's a key thing you remember is not all
of America is online not all the world is online and that's growing all the time and then a lot
of people who are on the internet aren't comfortable buying from the internet still but it's growing
rapidly a lot of people have made their first online purchases in the past year and it's proving
that it's working all this advertising and stuff so we got new advertisers competing for that
with new customers online and it's again it's just going to keep growing super highly effective
it's a good time to own a digital agency or work or work with one so we're we're in a good spot I think
we have all have a little bit of job security for a little while you know like Google Facebook and
Amazon like take over all of us you know like who knows but they'll just tell us what to buy
that exactly they need us to help sell their ads anyway yeah I can't sell to everyone that's true
okay next on list so we've got a client really great client ultra fabrics they are one of the
leading providers of performance leather and fabrics I'll call that I would say an improved leather
sustainable product that hell it's in the new McLaren let's let's call a spade a spade if it's
good enough for them McLaren we're talking about some quality stuff here and they've been a great
client we're helping them some stuff but they have a really interesting digital expose if I may
call it they've got a virtual event a couple virtual events a panel and the thing all around
their color lab so they do all of these fabrics and they're really well known for the layers
of colors and the modern color that they have they have a colorist on staff they do some amazing
things but they've got this conscious use of color conference kind of happening and you talking
about the power of color and you know being in marketing and branding it's kind of a dual path
yes they're a client I thought this was really interesting what they're doing and you know bringing
these people together having this discussion but as we think about when you think about like us and
you think about brands and marketing and all that and the power of it like power red you know like
the strength of red every bank is blue you know like how many banks are blue like Bank of America
USA like almost every bank has blue in it when you think about it and it's like the use of color
in branding and marketing for us is very obvious as I look at you with your yellow shirt on the
if you're watching the video you'll know what I'm saying and if you don't but Josh has a bright yellow
t-shirt on I forget the brand what brand is that little trans that's right that's a local brand
oh yeah yes support local I love it but I mean what are your thoughts about the use of color
in general and you know what they're doing here with the color lab yeah I think it's really cool
I mean color is way more important than you might initially think and
um just looking over their promo for it and stuff like they're they're getting into like the
historical and cultural significance of different shades of color and then there's always the like
psychological impact of like I remember as a big trend like oh like all restaurants have to
have red and tears because that makes you more hungry yeah or it can't be green inside or whatever
um but it's super impactful it creates context that you might not even think about
no it does and like you you don't realize the impact of color because not only
and I'm in learning this like you know as we work with a lot of fabric companies now like
how many like you you know like intrinsically I know I'm sitting in this chair right now and it's
got fabric on it but like you don't realize like fat some sort of fabric not only what you're wearing
is in use like within inches of you at every moment every room you walk in every seat you
sit on yeah every wall now with wall coverings and everything else the floors with fabric from
carpets and things like that yeah then you layer on the color impact of those things as we sit
you know we sit in our you know studio here you've got the impact of color behind this impact
all I see is your shirt but you're in this small room but like the impact that color has on it
I do remember like literally working on firehouse subs and they're red firehouse red engine red
alert alert yeah time to eat firehouse sub but uh no literally there's psychology of color in decision
making and you know we've had you know neuro guys on several times I would love to even
chalk that up with them like the impact of color yeah on the brain how the brain reacts the color
because I you know it does yeah I mean it's just proven definitely so it's really interesting
they're doing this we really support them great client you need to check learn about all this I'm
I can get into every details middle to late May go to ultra fabrics ink dot com to learn all about
the conscious use of color and the power of color through their conscious series that they're having
so uh check that out really interesting finally and I like this oh yeah oh yeah nerf
let's talk some nerf oh yeah nerf opened up a new sea level position they uh we're advertising
the new position all of last month they're offering it um definitely they only did they're
offering it for three months but it's gonna be $30,000 for three months small contract but you could
be the very first chief tiktok officer ccto or ctto of nerf ctto yes um it's nerf or it's nothing
but tons of people are putting on their um they're making tiktoks I saw it all over my feed of
people auditioning to be the new tiktok officer um and they they've made their hire last week and
this is probably the most fitting uh hire that I could think of uh Sophie Jamison aka nerf
101 on tiktok she's 20 years old has 1.8 million followers on tiktok just all she does is post
about nerf she'll post about like nerf uh stereotypes and classic nerf jokes nerf news uh she
had some about the new like nerf and supreme collab um she is now nerf's chief tiktok officer
there's a lot to impact there uh i'm gonna start down some nostalgia of my own when i think of
nerf like i remember like i don't know if i was five or seven i don't know what it was but
when you first got your first nerf football like that foam football like oh yeah
i throw this baby don't let it get wet though i think it's 10,000 pounds yeah i mean that thing
gets wet but boy when i would i would lost some nerf footballs over my house and like thought
it was the greatest thing ever because light your kid you know a full size football when you
know like seven years old is like daunting like to throw in a hold so when that nerf football came
out i'm like oh yeah yeah give me hands on that thing and you know i didn't hurt like when you
catch it right hitch in the face like if you know like football hits you in the face it hurts oh yeah
but if you get hit with the nerf you could bounce back pretty quick from that thing oh yeah no one's
no one's running home crying for that one no but maybe the nerf guns come out you're shooting bullets
my kids are shooting these nerf bullets i step on one like every other morning yeah i'm like
tripping over nerf bullets getting just trying to get a bullet serial in the morning like
yeah i mean my my older brother would have full on nerf battles and the my younger brother started
getting nerf guns but my parents decided to get him to like fully automatic ones have got
missile launchers and stuff oh yeah a little bit biased there you got these things on the side
that shoot the big nerf things like my you know like Nash is like shooting me with the gun and like
they got these things on the side they're like you know missile launchers and it's like
dude like i was like dang that's like i hurt yeah like fun like you know i'm like i never thought
I was like i did wonder with the little rubber ends i'm like just like shoot their eye out of the
kids i'm like right square they'll be fine it'll be fine it's nerf i mean nerf is very culturally
significant at this point and then um very significant to our office i think we quote the
SNL skip nerf crotch bat probably once a week at least oh at least crotch bat one of the one of
the greatest SNL skits of all time crotch bat crotch bat nerf crotch bat better than regular crotch
weight way better than regular crotch bat uh but oh speaking of that i do remember as a kid like one
you know i got the nerf ball that dog which dog choose that shit up like oh god it goes everywhere
it's like pieces everywhere we had a dog it would always chew like i wanted to think that happened
waterlogged or dog chewing it up so those nerf balls had a life life of like two weeks max yeah
so i'm always gonna and occasionally mom would go to the discount store and get the non-nerf
football you know what i'm talking about oh yeah it's not the same now i don't know what that
nerf shit is but it is way better you know the discount balls you know it didn't have the exact same
kind of heft when you throw it it's like you know it's you can't throw a spiral with it is like
wobbling around mom's like it's the same thing i'm like mom it's not the same thing don't
i get these my friends are gonna laugh at me with this faux nerf bullshit you brought home no they
nailed it it's nerf or it's nothing it is nerver nothing but uh but yeah but look let's get back
to the core of the marketing side of this and just out put this towel on the back burner look
chief tiktok officer look if you are paying attention now i mean you've got nerf doing and look
it's right in their freaking demo so they should be doing this but the fact that they have the balls
to pull this off and like yeah it's awesome like i mean what an experience for it you've got
nerf 101 like you're reaching out to influencers but you're doing it in impactful way because you're
bringing them in yeah letting them work with your cmo or whoever i think most of cmo wasn't it
one of the i mean the the global marketing officer uh whatever it is of tiktok is like
personally monitoring her which is i mean that's a huge experience you know like she's obviously
already producing all the content and you know well on her way to being a marketing wizard early
yeah as a youngster and to get this experience good grief yeah skies the limit but i think it's
i think it's like uh i mean it's like trend we've been seeing but they but they're doing it
really well and they're kind of headlining this of like getting your customer base the people
you're you're super fans because so if yeah i would say it's a super fan of nerf like bring them in
like let them make your content your u gc like obviously pay them but um like that's awesome like
they're that's someone who's like taking an easy kind of letting letting the reins lose a little bit
and bringing people into the team i wonder if they'll stick around or they'll do some kind of
engagement longer than the three months that are planned i guess we'll see how the experience is i
mean i know the ad platforms coming along better be interesting to see obviously right now it's
been mainly probably plan play you know high high funnel brand play for a lot of these companies
be interesting how they start to monetize it if they're seeing impact or if they're able to correlate it
yeah you know i mean it makes sense you think you you know intrinsically from a brand perspective
you're raising awareness you're at the demo that's buying your products that you want to have
that relationship with so you i i see the brand play i just wonder you know winner if and how
you start to see that that switch is it going to be products within tiktok i mean like you see on
instagram yeah we're getting closer to that aren't we yeah we are i know they they've tested it
and a couple uh like countries of they're like tagable products but i can't they need to get the
crotch bat back i think you do that yeah i think that's priority number one here that's every real
everyone reached out to Sophie this whole new segment was just how do we get how do we get
in build to crotch bat yeah in 28 minutes to uh talk about so that we can get to how can we talk
more about crotch bat it's why we do what we do here we just uh all the fluff just to get to the
sizzle of crotch bat now i'll go do yourself a favor go go youtube s and l crotch bat you'll
