Weekly Marketing and Advertising News, January 28, 2022: McDonald's Mocks Crypto Investors?

 today might be the most days ever in one day really yeah nine holidays in one there's a
 belief out there that the metaverse is actually gonna play heavily into the hybrid work environment
 that we're working moving into the only thing I don't get so just like if you're kind of playing
 the game and moving your person around it's like what are you getting any work done there was a
 lot of memes and such that kind of came with it like the grid of how crypto's been doing is the
 arches of me oh that's a clever but I'm pulling it out more to how all these brands on Twitter
 especially whether it's metaverse related or not are really acting more like people than brands
 and I think it's been beneficial for them your listening to the radcast if it's radical we cover it

 Friday January 28th 2022 welcome to our weekly marketing and advertising news I'm joined as always
 by my lifelong friend lifelong I think it has been sure it's a 13 life long feels like it feels like

 to 58 today I think to 58 yeah not to 57 no I think I'll wait yeah to extra cereal bar this morning
 hey man yeah I get into Titan locked in for the beach in two three weeks less than three weeks
 are you tanning not yet I'm going to before we go are you do tanning better do you have natural
 no I'll get I'll get into tanning bad like just because we go to Mexico get a base like
 get like two days of a base just so I don't fry the first day yeah and uh and I'm proud to go do
 it you know you know I'm not in there every day you know no you know I just have this natural glow
 you get a little darkness to you know a little little pre-tan yeah I uh I did that one time
 before uh went on a cruise and burned the shit out of myself yeah I was bright bright red
 the first couple days of the cruise so that was fun and uh yeah and they just it went right back
 to white like this so it's like that's perfect yeah you are a white guy I am I don't tan yeah it
 doesn't happen I have that all of skin I don't I'd parents both kind of had a little bit of it
 a little bit of training in the blood or something I guess you know something Steve hmm he's a
 tall guy yes so well I don't know what it came from but I'm excited about our trip less than
 three weeks away who's counting certainly not me what what's going to happen with the rad castle
 here go I actually leave on a Wednesday and come back on a Sunday so we might record the news
 early on a Tuesday okay you know you can do it or you and Nick can record it or maybe we'll
 throw a book on a special guest to come in with you we'll figure it out yeah we got Joey and
 Sean on deck yeah exactly y'all could do it we could do it yeah we've got we've got talent
 around here folks talent around talent coming out of our ears round it's been a good week how's
 your week been it's been good we my son and I went to see the hawks play Charlotte NBA oh nice
 yeah it's really it's one of his Christmas presents we do experience as much as you do yeah we
 actually on on Saturday went to see something called big-time wrestling I don't know if you're
 familiar nice such a little BTW former stars exactly and they and that's their like
 come on guys Jerry the King Lawler was there of course you they rock and roll express was there
 the original yeah oh my god yeah how those guys are like 70 years old they're so really wrestling
 yeah did they do drop kicks yeah oh they did all kinds of shit dude it's the beginning of their
 farewell tour they they announced there's a there's a what are they called FTR or something they're
 like younger guys yeah so they kind of carried them a little bit they helped out quite a bit
 all right they pushed the wheelchair down here right picking them up and putting their teeth
 back in their mouth yeah Scotty too hot he was there I don't know if you remember him okay sort of
 my 10 years I think Scott Steiner oh wow yeah he's still big big pop pop he's really big he was
 also out of breath pretty bad he went out of that before this guy oh my god he probably went
 out right before the match also on a like a not great no Lex Luger was there oh dude he's not
 doing well he's in a wheelchair yeah he looked like he weighed about 140 pounds I think he has
 the cancer he has something something something yeah I don't know he was I think he was ill but I
 think it maybe was self-inflicted a little bit okay you know what I mean yeah all right those guys
 with their yeah a lot of steroids and a lot of who knows what yeah who knows but yeah so that
 big time wrestling big it sounds like a big time well and to make it even more big time it was
 in Spartan Berbermore a lot so sparkle city no big deal there yeah literally no big deal literally
 not even big deal all terrible it was it's really fun to watch and it's just it's it's almost
 funnier than the you know what I mean yeah you're just kind of like holy shit I can't believe
 this guy's still doing this it's crazy how do they get paid for that oh man I don't know I know
 that they they sign stuff and all that and they make money off of that okay so I don't know
 if it all adds up to a few grand or something probably I we see Kevin Nash in Scott Hall one time
 there they were they maybe had a couple cocktails before yeah it's okay hi Kevin high Scott yeah
 you know you did yeah I might get them on the show it to be the shit out of me awesome yeah Kevin
 Nash is coming to the SC Comic-Con you actually might be able to get them on the show yes
 um can we saw one time okay pretty cool there we go yeah so and uh we need to just have a
 wrestling segment of the radcast I think I kind of like it it's all right you know we could do it
 yeah you know the wrestling yeah the wrestling you you and I can wrestle right here on the table
 uh well I don't think wait class I'll explain you through it I'll be funny she was pretty
 awesome pretty solid we need to fake a fake chair a fake table those metal chairs you know somehow
 they smash each other over the head they hurt yeah it was a good week for the radcast
 Jenna Andrews episode launched on Tuesday she's the vocal producer for a lot of BTS's hits as well
 songwriting on dynamite and butter and others she had a jazzy hat on too she did have a jazzy hat
 very jazzy yes she was jazzy all around yeah really talented really looped in she's uh
 getting involved in like some of the hottest projects and music right now and she was really
 cool so we enjoyed having Jenna throughout their Jenna we appreciate you Tuesday we have Don Yeager
 who is a sport he's a sports illustrated former writer he's written some of the biggest
 and best articles you've probably read and sports illustrated in the last 20 years I know
 that name yeah he's written a ton about Michael Jordan she's got a book um and Don came on he's got
 like the perfect voice for podcasts like he's got his own podcast actually went on his podcast
 a few months ago and uh just really nice guy so down to earth and uh has a lot of great stories
 because he's written about some of the greatest athletes in the world and she really enjoyed
 Donald's show so look out for that next week talks about his journey and you know the art of writing
 and sure all of those things sounds good yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna look him up right after this
 because I didn't think I've read a couple of his articles you'll recognize the articles when you
 see them and he's you know some of the most I mean Michael Jordan being you know who he is is the
 most uh recognized athlete the world probably even still but uh some of the others uh you would
 know and uh but really enjoy talking to Don and um with that I don't really want to hold back
 you know everyone from getting to their favorite segment right no let's get right into it I mean
 yeah I just thought my show notes anything goes yeah after that it's wild uh it's it's a jam packed
 okay social holidays it was a long list and today might be the most days ever in one day really
 yeah okay uh one two three four five six nine holidays in one today wow
 does it be a limit I it's gonna be unstoppable the amount of fun we're gonna have I'm gonna be
 really busy today trying to observe all of yeah uh you know the first one you know isn't serious
 uh let me take this back is serious and I'm but it's like I I laugh being in the industry that
 I'm in of how much if people really take it as serious as they say okay it's data privacy day
 okay you know it's a serious thing it is it's important it's important it's very important
 but I don't know that people take it as serious as they need to uh they probably don't I mean you
 kind of exchange convenience for sure for your privacy a bit yeah especially data privacy it's like
 oh yeah well I'll sign up for that okay I will cuz easy yeah yeah yeah I uh I've as I've
 gotten a little bit older have been taking a lot more seriously you know secure apps and you
 know VPNs and et cetera you did have that sex tape leak I did and that was unfortunate um it wasn't
 actually me in it which was the really embarrassing thing your name is on oh I don't know why
 my name was on it yeah it was really weird I think it's cuz you filmed it well I did I did film it
 but I mean I produced direct it and I mean I wrote the script yeah but yeah I told them
 specifically to take mayor mayor not have been your stunt double but you know sure it's just a
 deep fake but it was a really bad one it was just my face like really big on somebody yeah
 something was really big there we go the uh it's also global community engagement day I don't
 know what that means you know this is a lot of words and it's like it could be in a lot of things
 like it could be online community engagement like Facebook groups sure or it could be local like
 in your neighborhood community engagement day like you're getting involved so that's you know what
 tomorrow's being Saturday as you know yeah we're going to a an eastside high school fundraiser my
 wife and I yep oh wow yeah for you yeah it's gonna be really exciting I'm gonna give what I
 gave last year yeah me too yeah I think we're actually getting it for free so you might you
 might throw some money in the uh I don't know it was like the cake the cake toss or I don't know
 like cake toss sure yeah bake a cake what is it when you're like there's a bunch of cakes and you
 I don't know a bit on the maybe cake walk yeah what I say cake throw cake toss yeah I don't know at
 least that'd be so much better I'm interested in that I'd like to try that the cake toss the good old

 for breakfast you're always talking about it always always I slather that stuff on anything

 about puzzles pretty much the same way I feel about Legos yeah well you are I mean Legos are

 yeah how about national seed swap day is tomorrow is what seed swap what does that mean uh seed
 seed not swapping not like swapping seed we're swapping seeds like what you grow in the ground sound

 no that was Sean P did he comes no I don't know who knows so first trends in the metaverse there's
 belief out there that you know everybody's kind of vying for what's gonna happen in the metaverse but
 there's a belief out there that the metaverse is actually gonna play heavily into the hybrid
 work environment that we're work moving into the work from home and I don't know if you've seen
 this there's some apps out there I've seen them kind of looked at it like where let's say we're all
 working from home sure and which I am by the way yeah you are and you get into a team meeting
 mm-hmm and you have like route like but you get into like maybe like an online environment like a
 gaming environment where it's like kind of like your digital office sure and think of it almost
 like a game that you're in and so like you have an avatar and so you go into a room and maybe
 Sally and Bobby and Roger in their you know like whatever they're doing in that room right maybe
 there's elements in the metaverse or things that you can see or do in that room specifically sure
 fall along here okay I am with you and then you can host meetings in that room that you might do
 either lie like a video or is your avatar within the room talking to one another huh so in other
 words it almost becomes like a true virtual office that you're at and the only thing I don't get
 enough seen these kind of things and just like if you're kind of playing the game and moving your
 person around it's like what are you getting any work done yeah you yeah you're so worried about
 goofing off like goofing off as part of the game you know it might be fun but yeah you're right it'd
 be hard to concentrate on the content that you're supposed to be digesting probably if that makes
 sense yeah I don't know this hit my radar I thought this was pretty cool I'm a McDonald's trolled
 you know this I'm kind of lumping in we're lumping in NFTs the metaverse and crypto it's all
 trends in crypto yeah I don't think too much but it's sort of related or if you follow any of these
 restaurants they they just kind of hammer people on Twitter Wendy's yeah but you know crypto has
 been taken a little bit of a bath this week and McDonald's put out a troll like it's I'm
 paraphrasing the tweet but it was like you know how are those crypto social media managers doing
 this week yeah right like and there was a lot of memes and such that kind of came with it
 showed up sure actually the like the grid of how crypto's been doing is the arches of McDonald's
 I like that pretty clever um and different things like that but I pulling it out more to
 how all these brands on Twitter especially whether it's metaverse related or not are really
 acting more like people than brands and I think it's been beneficial for them yeah they're
 personifying themselves they're giving themselves like a yeah giving themselves a personality personality
 sure and uh an image an image but uh what's your take on I mean you followed Wendy's and all
 that as they just kind of like hey I make you want to buy burger I what so if I was going to buy
 a burger from a fast food place would probably from Wendy's yeah but because they're better but not
 because of their tweets b because their tweets I mean that's it b's pretty far from a on that you
 know what I mean this is the difference between the top of the grand canyon in the park yeah for
 anger a b yeah yeah um I don't follow them so much as like it'll pop up in newsfeed or whatever
 and it's I love it I think it's great yeah I love it when they completely flame each other
 Jack in the box does a little bit I think yeah they should watch it though they've got a lot to
 they've got a lot of dark history they probably should get you far into it yeah that's a thing
 those people well that's like the the scary thing for like these brands as they had to be
 you better be pretty perfect if you're gonna be throwing lobbing jabs all the time yeah
 no you don't see Chipotle in there too much uh no yeah easy target easy super easy target so many
 things yeah let us alone no okay all right you did it you did it I went there uh but yeah the uh
 I will say this one other thing is it relates to trends in the metaverse we do have a client good
 for a really awesome water filtration company this stuff yeah yeah and they are uh
 about to launch an NFT project that we're helping them with okay it's going to be
 really based in some charitable stuff sure with water purification around the world and you know
 the tokenization of some art digital art like everything else but a lot of it's going to go
 back to charity and kind of the purity of water like worldwide they're kind of hashing through
 somehow that they'll give them a shout out because I think I'm pretty excited about some of the
 stuff we're gonna be bringing the life for them we know as a general rule and you know this
 about me I hate charity like I can't stand it you know what I mean but that one sounds pretty good
 thing I mean I can't stand charities it's just like you know yeah figured out yourself people
 shit you're the art screw I'm just kidding I give to charities I love charities yes all charities
 almost all charities yeah I don't like the ones that are like against me you know I mean you
 especially you really like the human fund yeah it's my number one George can stay on a human
 fund I dumped probably 25% of my income into the human fund every every yourself yeah correct
 yes yes so there you have it oh though oh my god we're gonna have to add that out
 trends in the metaverse and there you have it short but sweet trends in the metaverse this year
 so sweet I do have some good some good stuff here now in today's news articles so M&Ms
 see that candy candy not the guy M&Ms yes not multiple rappers yes to say
 not multiple M&Ms right the rapper but M&Ms what you eat sure a couple of pieces of news they
 update all their characters and their colors this week to be more inclusive and they're getting
 quite a bit of blowback people having a fit and they should yeah this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen
 it silly and look fine yes everybody is fine with more inclusivity right this isn't about like
 ex-name anyone this is candy you know like it's a cartoon it's a cartoon and these characters
 are classic and it's like all you do is come off as pandering and bad pandering is there somebody
 out there that was like oh you know what about it's about time it's about time they did this no no
 someone in the board room goes you know this is a hot topic this could really make us look progressive
 yeah I can hear it I can hear the douchebag in the room it been going hey you know we should
 need to change our characters and be more inclusive and it's candy and you have classic characters
 and you have people attached to it and like there's no reason to go there if you want to do something do
 it something more organic and more like meaningful then sure like changing your iconic candy
 character means nothing I keep nothing to nobody yeah right and and it had the back had the
 opposite effect I guess if you subscribe to the idea that all press is good press yeah maybe
 they did it did you see you know Tucker Carlson is yeah yeah everyone knows if I can tell
 the question number one in media this year yeah he had a a fit dude but he did it in a weird way
 to where he was like I wouldn't go get one drink with one of those pieces of candy or whatever
 because they like de-sexualized him a little bit yeah I wouldn't want to go get a drink with like
 well you but you would before though to be yeah yeah exactly yeah the green M&M I would definitely
 have had you know and of course with sure yeah I was just saying I have a drink sure

 will and then I did pick up they are doing a new packaging launch where they're paying tribute
 to four breakthrough musical artists by having the album art kind of on the packaging I saw that
 there are four themes around Casey Musgraves her Rosalia and David Bowie I saw the David Bowie
 one that was kind of the only one I really recognized yeah I don't know that I'd recognize case
 I know Casey Musgraves is but I would not recognize her I mean I've heard that name you wouldn't
 know one of her songs would you would I don't know it isn't you might is it country it's country
 but she's she's had crossover hits in pop I bet I've probably heard it in my daughter's car
 probably something right yeah yeah for team angst team there's so much t-nags right now it's
 well coming out it is called coming out so I I didn't mind the artist play I thought the
 freaking characters was the dumbest I could say I mean is there somebody somewhere like some
 transgender person or something being like thank you M&Ms I feel better yeah
 that would play out just for the M&Ms so much yeah yeah change characters back yeah
 that's a dumb idea don't shouldn't have gone with it nope all right I'm gonna boycott M&Ms
 just kidding I'm gonna stomp on every pack so that everyone gets a smush bag of M&Ms like
 getting I mean I think it's a dumb idea but I don't care that much I don't really eat M&Ms
 honestly I don't eat there's not good for you now it's candy yeah yeah yeah so you never eat
 candy I really you know what I don't eat that much candy really yeah I would eat bags of candy
 if like it it wasn't if it workers for you I would because I like I like the shit out of candy yeah
 but I also like feel guilty because I don't really exercise that much yeah I'm like okay you know
 what I don't need to get any more out of shape and then I have a drink and I feel better
 M&Lite is partnering with Metaverse Company see all the everything to fall into the Metaverse
 yeah we got to spread it out here that was a good segue too yeah accidentally
 M&Lite is partnering with Metaverse Company decentralized to bring a virtual bar to patrons during
 Super Bowl the Metaverse Bar will be the only place where people can view M&Lite's ad oh
 shit what you want to see the commercial you've got to go to the Metaverse Bar God I wasn't
 going to but now I am the Metaverse Bar offers M&Lite a way around and hires your bush Super Bowl
 alcohol marketing exclusivity that began in 2010 i.e. Budweiser
 yeah so this is their way of trying to get some borrowed interest at the Super Bowl
 the Super Bowl is like one of the you know if you're gonna borrow interest from something you
 borrow from the Super Bowl this is the right yeah I mean number one yeah so they're trying to
 stay cold even though they're boxed out of actually the big game sure so there's so only
 Budweiser can advertise during they're the only really alcohol company they have alcohol exclusivity
 wow I did not know that but I guess it makes sense now yeah I don't think I've ever seen
 anything but a Budweiser but like imagine that's a hefty paycheck oh my god they're Super Bowl
 they're like an international conglomerate now though right in Bev or whatever it is yeah they
 own a bunch of shit I'm gonna go have a real beer inside the Metaverse sure and go down to
 decentralized land yeah I'll meet you there it's like there's so many of these names like every
 week we talk about them yeah it's like okay how do you choose which one you're gonna go be a
 part of I can't even I guess Roblox isn't quite appropriate probably until Roblox after dark
 it's like you said yeah we're working on it yeah I think it's a pretty good idea actually I mean come
 on I think we should go promote that to whoever owns Roblox yeah Roblox Inc is it yeah it's
 something like that you get by stock can you you can they're they're uh publicly oh no they're
 doing fine they're doing just fine I did like this one uh I actually have been talking about
 this as a growing trend slash and it's not so everybody wants to the latest Chris innovation
 that you want everyone's innovation the innovation has kind of slowed down you think about how
 little's happened on the smartphone in the last like five years right like the camera gets better
 you get more memory okay all right that's about it right but um QR codes promise to add in
 their activity boost with growth of connected TV leveraging the uptick and second screening
 this animal codes on TV ads give marketers another digital data signal about consumers this comes
 from marketing dive our good friends at marketing dive.com here's why I like this because I believe in
 this what's happened is the pandemic has made something that didn't quite take off 10 years ago
 now take off because of like menus you see people have gotten they're built into the phones now
 and people have gotten more use to using QR codes because of the pandemic yeah not touching stuff
 so you've you finally have this adoption rate matched with the technology you know getting mainstream

 get ever reader right I got to open I got to get to that app I never use it's on page 12 of my
 iPhone swipe across you never you can't find it so it's like too much friction you know and now
 it's just in the camera and you have people because of menus and restaurants and other things more
 used to it I think you have kind of this perfect moment for where in marketing it makes a lot of
 sense to use them the right place I agree and when you're watching TV you always have it thrown
 in your hand yeah second screen yeah and so if you've got that ad running and they can pop it up you
 can extend that commercial to a further reach a better impression taking to a landing page to get
 a direct sale yeah so I think we're in this you know it that QR codes oh that's so two years ago
 right but I think the actual practical use in marketing is that or close to its most pinnacle
 I agree because I mean even non-tech savvy maybe older people whatever they can point their phone
 at the fucking thing and yeah oh here's the menu right exactly so and that's what I'm saying even
 the untech savvy so you know you had this bill curve of adoption with everything and you know it's
 take it's all it's been the slowest moving curve ever with the QR codes yeah and it got a
 little faster when I got built into the phones but you still didn't have a really dynamic reason to
 have to do it sure the pandemic forced you to have to do it young old middle so now there's an
 adoption rate so that if they see it in an ad or somewhere else they're more prone to use it where
 they blew it all five years ago yeah so yeah you're right I think I still have a QR reader app on
 my phone you probably do I just because I never race anything so I mean can you still use those
 I don't know there's no reason only in the metaverse it's a trend in the metaverse yeah
 trending down trending down so I like this if you're out there and you're listening and you're
 coming from marketing knowledge there it is get QR codes on your TV spots on connected TV especially
 because you can pause different different things like that do it I guess you can do that on your TV
 too if you've got a DVR but sure that we'll see a lot more video out there everyone has a DVR I
 think so Budweiser is returning to Super Bowl and there's a new Bud Light next which is a zero
 car beer I might be into this folks you're definitely definitely that's making also making a metaverse
 play of course oh it's so meta they're gonna run six Super Bowl ads that includes bringing Budweiser
 back to the game after it sat out last year and plugging its new zero car Bud Light variety with an

 rights fees haul for the league and it's team to 1.8 but but but billion dollars worth of
 right steals this season billion with a B billion with a B comes from ad age as well thank you at

 yep every day and an apple juice sweet and every time I left it on the floor my sister picked it
 up after me it reminds me to this day yeah of picking up after my Swiss cake rolls well I mean
 it's a it's a family moment yeah I mean I was five years younger than her you know yeah
