166. Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 14, Verses 11 - 15 | Swami Sarvapriyananda

Vedanta Talks - Swami Sarvapriyananda

Taught by Swami Sarvapriyananda, this episode is part of a series of talks that unfold the highest truths of Vedanta through the study of the Bhagavad Gita, "The Song of God".

Chapter 14 is devoted to an understanding of the Gunatreya Vibhaga Yoga, or the three qualities/components of Maya. The entire universe is created by a projection of the three gunas - satva, rajas, and tamas. Understanding the science of the three gunas and how we can apply it to our lives is the focus of Chapter 14.

In this episode, Swami Sarvapriyananda teaches chapter 14, verses 11-15, of the Bhagavad Gita. These verses describe what happens when one guna predominates over another. Swami Sarvapriyananda explains how we can observe this in ourselves but notes that the gunas are part of the material world and, as such, are constantly changing within us, whereas Consciousness, which is what we really are, is pure and constant.

[SPEAKER_00]: O, Vasudeva, Suttam, Devam, Kamsa, Chanuram, Ardhanam, Devaki, Paramanandam, Krishna, Vandijagal, Guru.
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Gita class.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the first Gita class of this year.
[SPEAKER_00]: So happy new year, everybody.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ha ha.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's also the birthday of Swami Turian and the G, one of the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he is one of those monks who was here, actually, in New York after Swami Vivekananda.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, Saradan and the G was here, and then so, I am Eterian and the G was here very briefly few months, and then of course, I am here very down G for two decades, I was just thinking
[SPEAKER_00]: He was a stonch Vedant in non-duelist, very, very fond of the Bhagavad-gita, but he is gita-less and I am remembering the anecdote told by Swami Prabhavan and the G, the Swami who founded the Vedanta society of Southern California in Hollywood.
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, when he was a young monk in Banaras, Kashi in Banaras, at that time Swami Thurian in the Gives very old and ailing, he was there in the, because that Ashram has a hospital attached to it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the world Swami was there at that time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And Swami Pramavan, he said, this is a good opportunity for me to learn
[SPEAKER_00]: The Gita, because Swami Thuriananda is here, who better to learn it from then Swami Thuriananda.
[SPEAKER_00]: So he said that I started pestering him to teach me the Gita.
[SPEAKER_00]: At first he put me off, when he finally agreed that you can come tomorrow in the morning with your Gita, come and meet me.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the next morning with all eagerness, he said, I went with the Gita to Swami Thuriananda.
[SPEAKER_00]: And Swami Thuriananda said that
[SPEAKER_00]: Take up one verse of the Gita, learn it, memorize it, meditate, and try to practice it in your life.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then go on to the next verse.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is my first and my last lesson in the Gita to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: So luckily, I don't prescribe to that method of teaching the Gita.
[SPEAKER_00]: You would have very few students left.
[SPEAKER_00]: But he himself did it that way.
[SPEAKER_00]: So Tarmituriyan ji said, when he used to meditate and do spiritual practices in Uttarkashi, in actually in Sorghashra, near Rishikesh.
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, I would take up a verse, sometimes of the Gita, or the Upanishads,
[SPEAKER_00]: meditate upon it for days together.
[SPEAKER_00]: He says, that's the time when he completed the memorization of all the major Upanishads.
[SPEAKER_00]: Gita already had memorized earlier in his childhood.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: We are now learning the signs of the three Gunas, Satwaguna, Rajaguna and Tamaguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: We have we were on the 10th verse.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the 10th verse.
[SPEAKER_00]: Rajasthama Shchabhi Bhuvya Rajasthama Shchabhi Bhuvya Satnam Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bhavati Bh
[SPEAKER_00]: Satua manifests over descendant of Bharata, over powering Rajas and Thomas, Rajas manifests over powering Satua and Thomas, over powering Satua and Thomas and likewise, Thomas manifests over powering Satua and Rajas.
[SPEAKER_00]: Basically, the three gunners are dynamic and constantly in change in a flux.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes we can see in our own state of mind, body, senses, energy levels.
[SPEAKER_00]: We can sometimes we feel satvic, sometimes we feel rajasic, sometimes tamasic, and it changes.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, sattva gonna sometimes predominates, predominates over the rajas and tamas.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes the other ones, one of the other predominates over the other two.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, what happens when each of them predominates, he points it out.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, that we can observe it in ourselves 11th verse.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sarvadwari Shudhi Heismin Sarvadwari Shudhi Heismin Prakasha Upa Jaya Tee Prakasha Upa Jaya Tee Janam Yadatada Vidyat
[SPEAKER_00]: Nyanam yadātada vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt, vidyāt,
[SPEAKER_00]: In all the, it literally means through all the gates, all the windows of the gates of this body, light floods, is a flood of light.
[SPEAKER_00]: What it just means is alertness, luminosity, knowledge, sensitivity.
[SPEAKER_00]: I once asked a monk, after I became a monk, I asked a senior monk.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you become a monk, to the senses become more sensitive or less, he said more.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you do it right, the senses and the mind, they all become more sensitive.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is what is meant here by a flood of light.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, all the five doors of the senses, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching.
[SPEAKER_00]: And all the activities also, actions, but we do, the work that we do.
[SPEAKER_00]: We become much more sensitive, much more careful, much more attentive.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll give you a couple of examples, this great Vedanta teacher is to go to his elderly and quite sick at that time actually, has to go to him in his last year's of his life, I used to go to him with questions about Vedanta, but a couple of little anecdotes I'll tell you which points to this Satu Aguna, one day
[SPEAKER_00]: he asked me to pin two pieces of a document with two printed pair pages to pin it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I had been put the pin through it and he said, no, not like this.
[SPEAKER_00]: He took it from me and he put the sharp edge of the pin between the two pages so that it does not stick out and you know I can buy chance we can prick somebody's finger.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, it is bouncing like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another day he asked me, switch on the light and it was daytime, there was no need to switch on the light but he was teaching me something.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I switched it on and there was a click sound, he said, why did it make a sound?
[SPEAKER_00]: You can switch it on without making a sound, do it again.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I did it again and it was a tiny click.
[SPEAKER_00]: So do it once more.
[SPEAKER_00]: I again switched it off and switched it on carefully, mindfully and there was no sound.
[SPEAKER_00]: A tamasick mind will forget to shut the door anyway.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, one meditation master suggests, you want to calm down your mind, shut the door, but take five minutes to shut it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Slowly, utterly, slowly, for five minutes, ill calm, calm, you don't very fast.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, a satanic mind is alert in this way.
[SPEAKER_00]: The work also it does is alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: In all the senses, it's like a light shining through all the senses.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember, I had heard from a monk talking about Swami, very sure, and the tenth President of our order, Prabhu Maharaj was a tiny, tiny man.
[SPEAKER_00]: When he passed, of course, he was very ill, but he was only 26 kgs when he passed.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, kilograms, so that would have been about 50 pounds.
[SPEAKER_00]: even when he was healthy, he was not much much more heavier than that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a tiny, tiny man, but those who have seen one monk told me, it's like a light shown through him.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't the monk told me at that time computers are just coming to be like pieces and all he says, if you see, one felt, if you knew him, one felt that every cell of his body was like a computer chip, he, it's just like he barely had a body, it's something like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, that is the sign of a great development of Satwaguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yogis you will find that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Inactions about Swami Pramishan and the G, his attendant told me, so I am Pramishan and the disciple of the Holy Mother, a great saintly person.
[SPEAKER_00]: In his old age he was being veiled along in a perambulator, in a wheelchair.
[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody in the monastery, in the garden, they were chopping wood.
[SPEAKER_00]: And as the old Swami passed, he said, stop, give me the axe.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then he gave some tense strokes on the wood.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that didn't entour me.
[SPEAKER_00]: We were amazed to see this old Swami so feeble.
[SPEAKER_00]: But he did it every blow fell on the exact same spot.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, the monk was working earlier.
[SPEAKER_00]: Every blow was falling in a different spot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swami Brahman and I think it is the story of Swami Brahman.
[SPEAKER_00]: They gave him about Swami Birishwainji, so Swami Birishwainji was a young monk at that time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swami Brahman and they said, show me the young monks, they are peeling potatoes, show me the peeled potatoes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he picked out one and he said, who's done this?
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's in a peripheral story.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how from a bunch of potatoes, how could they find out who's peeling it?
[SPEAKER_00]: But it turned out that it was a problem as a peel that's put it.
[SPEAKER_00]: He says, the one who has done this can meditate.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a sign of Satwagoda.
[SPEAKER_00]: So in all the senses as if light streams through, not that you become like a radium clock or something like that, you show a glow in the dark, well, it's alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can one can feel it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And one gets it sometimes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody gets a little bit of it sometimes, but if it's predominant, that's generally your state, generally.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, the mind, the intellect also becomes clear, so this you are able to hear, so intellect also becomes clear, something mental, it is audible at the back right, the intellect also becomes clear, the what is to be done and what is not to be done is very clear, what
[SPEAKER_00]: What is real, and what is unreal, what is valuable in life, the spiritual reality God is valuable in life, the world is transitory, this becomes clear.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not only that, the mind becomes pure in sattva-guna.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it is able to execute what it understands.
[SPEAKER_00]: The intellect understands something and the mind is able to execute it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the poet says, between the intention and the act falls the shadow, very beautifully put.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think Eliot said it, between the intention and the act falls the shadow.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what most of us.
[SPEAKER_00]: But for the sattvik person, it's much easier to do what is right.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what is right and you are able to do it much more easily.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then, he says here, he says here, de-hiss-min in this body, he says, Sarva-dvaraya-shoday has been in all the windows of in this body.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there is a meaning here, he emphasizes in this body, the three gunners are there in the bodies of all living beings.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it is only in the human being that you can have an excess of Satwaguna, an extraordinary development of Satwaguna because the human mind, body, nervous system is capable of knowledge of the higher functioning of the mind and intellect.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, Satwik qualities are for other animals living beings, it's mostly Thomas or Rajas.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that too of a lower lower variety, but the higher sattva is possible in a human body.
[SPEAKER_00]: And therefore, it is a great, great opportunity.
[SPEAKER_00]: the religions will never tire of telling you what an important out of valuable seeing a human birth is.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, in terms of the three gurus, it is here in this birth that we finally have the capacity, the freedom, the independence to deal with these three gurus to overcome Rajas and Thomas and maximize Satu and B spiritual.
[SPEAKER_00]: One more point I wanted to make here is that, yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, this is Vivrit Dham Satwamit Yutha.
[SPEAKER_00]: When this light comes, when this alertness comes, when this mind and intellect are in this very suitable state for spirituality, it is naturally you feel knowledge and happiness.
[SPEAKER_00]: and a general feeling of well-being and happiness is there, balance and happiness.
[SPEAKER_00]: But remember, it is due to Satu Agoda.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is one of the Gunas of Prakriti.
[SPEAKER_00]: The general, the ego should not immediately claim the normally what happens is, see, I am so knowledgeable.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am so happy and peaceful.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am so disciplined.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am a real yogi.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, this is just the manifestation of Satu Aguna in the mind and the body.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is what enables you to do all these things for the time being.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, do not be identified even with such a good thing as Satyoguna, do not be identified with it.
[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, it is not the truth, you are the witness, you are not the Satyoguna itself.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, Thubuna is a quality, is a constituent of property and it is in the ascendant in the body mind system at that time, that is why this desire to learn to know this luminosity in the senses in the mind in the intellect all of this manifests, that is why this peace and happiness, this ability to discipline oneself, it manifests.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you don't take it as, you know, don't let the ego claim it, let's see, I'm doing so well, I'm such a good yogi or a good monk or whatever it is, yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: developing this a little more.
[SPEAKER_00]: All three gunners are playing in the body mind, in the body, the sensory system, the mind, the emotions and the intellect, the three gunners are playing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Some in one of them increases dominating the other two and then the others come up dominating the other pair.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this goes on.
[SPEAKER_00]: You then what am I?
[SPEAKER_00]: I am not this satric person.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am not this
[SPEAKER_00]: I am in fact something much higher and greater than all of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am this luminous consciousness, this spirit itself.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Sattura Rajasthavas are also part of material nature.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the body, it's nature.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you'll know that you are the witness of the three gurus.
[SPEAKER_00]: these three keep changing.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't keep changing.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am the same one who felt sleepy in the morning and then after a cup of coffee now I feel alert, an active.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I felt tamasik, now I feel Rajasik and then I go into the class and then I feel tamasik again sleepy.
[SPEAKER_00]: But after a while it passes.
[SPEAKER_00]: I used to think people fall asleep in Vedanta class and then I went to school for a while, seven or eight months in the print.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then I would fall asleep in a wave of sleep would come, I could hardly keep my eyes open, but only for a few minutes and then it would pass and then you can concentrate.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, Thomas may be a wave goes away and then you concentrate.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, these come and go, I am the same, the important thing to see is, first of all, the gunners are changing note, you can easily see it in our daily experience.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then he says, then what he is pointing out is, if you are able to see the changes in the gunners, the increase and decline in these gunners, then you are none of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: See, the eye which felt lazy and sleepy.
[SPEAKER_00]: the eye which felt dynamic and active and energetic is the eye which feels balanced and concentrated and focused and alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then what is that eye?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it lazy or is it energetic or is it concentrated and alert?
[SPEAKER_00]: None of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is just bare awareness, existence, consciousness, please.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is the self, it is the Atman.
[SPEAKER_00]: The argument is that if we know the changing, the lower must be unchanging.
[SPEAKER_00]: Without an unchanging, the changing cannot be known.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another changeful thing, one changeful thing cannot observe another changeful thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: There must be some unchanging background.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is an argument.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can argue against it also, but there is an implicit argument, you find it in Vedanta.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this argument is there.
[SPEAKER_00]: The most important thing here is the benefit that Sattu Aguna gives for spiritual life.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when Sattu Aguna is there, why Sattu Aguna is so valuable for spiritual life?
[SPEAKER_00]: When Sattu Aguna is there, we are not inadvertent.
[SPEAKER_00]: Intervertence is caused due to tamaguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: We work efficiently without making mistakes.
[SPEAKER_00]: We are not sloppy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you are not sloppy in our work, we will not be sloppy in our prayer in our study in our meditation also.
[SPEAKER_00]: Those are higher activities.
[SPEAKER_00]: If somebody is sloppy externally, this absolutely sure that we will be sloppy internally also, much worse.
[SPEAKER_00]: Those higher activities, if the mind is alert and luminous, it will be reflected in the actions of the person also.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is why in the monastery, when you are trained amongst the particular about how
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember when I first became a monk and we used to wear this dhothi and I never washed dhothi.
[SPEAKER_00]: So for the first time you put it in a bucket of water and you wash it and ring out the water and then you throw it in the clothes line and make it dry it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I threw it there, I didn't see any difference, but immediately another monk, a young novice actually, a little senior to me, he said, not like that, he comes in, the edges of the cloth are perfectly adjusted.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he, you know, airs it so that the cloth does not stick together, I said, ah, never
[SPEAKER_00]: One of the earliest small, small, very small things.
[SPEAKER_00]: We go into the Swami's head of the Ashram.
[SPEAKER_00]: He calls us to his room to talk about something.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the Ghashtam is to you take off your sandals outside the room of the Swami.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I took it up that it's not there.
[SPEAKER_00]: The next person who comes in will be put to the inconvenience.
[SPEAKER_00]: You take it off and put it properly at the side and then come in.
[SPEAKER_00]: Simple things.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, this is all a development of Satwagurani.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are in the smallest things, not inadvertent, not sloppy.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, one says this Swami told me, go clean that room, a big classroom in the building.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I cleaned it, swept it and wiped it, cleaned everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then Swami came to inspect.
[SPEAKER_00]: First thing he did was I still remember to my modification.
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of looking at all the nice places, I cleaned it, he opened the door and looked behind the door.
[SPEAKER_00]: And there was dust behind the door, and he said, do it again, do it again.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is then one is able to practice spiritual disciplines.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get up very early in the morning, it is easy to get up early in the morning.
[SPEAKER_00]: You sit for meditation, you don't feel sleepy when you are sitting for meditation or rest.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you feel sleepy when sitting for meditation, it is tamagona.
[SPEAKER_00]: If we will rest less when sitting for meditation, it is a Rajogona.
[SPEAKER_00]: But you like the quiet and peace and the centredness of meditation.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a taste-developed for meditation, very easily in Saktogona.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, the study has become luminous, the book speaks to you, and you like the devotional practices.
[SPEAKER_00]: I used to see that some of the non-novices would love working in the temple.
[SPEAKER_00]: They would do more than what was required, so they would go maybe make a garland like this garland for Sri Ramakrishna or you know in an attempt, they would sit.
[SPEAKER_00]: In their rest time and do something extra, they liked it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's the sign of Satwagoda.
[SPEAKER_00]: And therefore, Satva Guna is very valuable for spiritual life and we should try to develop it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Always remembering, it is a function of body mind.
[SPEAKER_00]: It can be generated, it will also dissipate after some time.
[SPEAKER_00]: The personality can be made, Satwa predominant.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you can do that, spiritual life will be easy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, Satwa can spirituality are not the same thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: A satvic personality may be non-spiritual.
[SPEAKER_00]: There are so many people who are very satvic, very intellectual, very creative, maybe great musicians, the minds are satvic, the senses are satvic, but they don't have a spiritual bone in their bodies.
[SPEAKER_00]: They could be atheistic, completely uninteresting spiritual life.
[SPEAKER_00]: and it is not necessary that a spiritual person is to begin with satvic, a person can be tamaristic and spiritual or rajasic and spiritual or a mixture of them, difficult but at least the main thing is what do you want?
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want?
[SPEAKER_00]: Do I want spirituality?
[SPEAKER_00]: Do I love God, I mean say no not that much, all right but do I want to love God a lot?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, in that case you are spiritual and then the struggle will be to develop Satva
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why Satrogonize is very valuable for spiritual seekers.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why this discussion is there, in fact.
[SPEAKER_00]: For ourselves, always remember for ourselves, not to point out flaws in others.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ah, so you have, you're on the spectrum between Rajas and Thama's.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can see them.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very easy to see it in others.
[SPEAKER_00]: The commentator here, Sri Dhar Swami He says,
[SPEAKER_00]: So in all the doors, doors means the doors of the body.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a book, the doors of perception.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll just explain the doors of perception.
[SPEAKER_00]: Shotra, the issue, in the ears, eyes, et cetera.
[SPEAKER_00]: Shabda, the Gyanath, Makhaprakash, luminosity, but luminosity of what of sound, of sight, and sound, and smell, and taste, and touch.
[SPEAKER_00]: And clarity of thought, the strength of will, these are all qualities of Sattva-Ghana.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is what is being called light here.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the Anayana, Procarsha Lingayana, by this, the presence of this luminosity in the mind in the body, one can understand, Sattuam vibridhum, that Sattuagora has increased.
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, Sattuagora has increased, don't be attached to it.
[SPEAKER_00]: No very clearly that I am a witness of this too.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's always a struggle at the beginning.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember one of my friends, a monk, so he had a terrible time getting up early in the morning, and he would take naps.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's somehow for the morning meditation or missed the morning meditation, and he would be sleeping.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the senior Swami's would be on his case as the saying goes,
[SPEAKER_00]: So, once after morning meditation I and a friend of mine we went to visit this young this other young monk by friend of ours because we hadn't seen him in morning meditation and sure enough he was it was a cold day or a very early morning cold just after sunrise he was wrapped up in his blanket and sleeping happily.
[SPEAKER_00]: We shrugged, okay, we came out of the room and then we saw a senior Swami who was a strict disciplinarian.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was with a cup of tea, he was walking, taking morning walk, supervising the children at their morning exercises and he was going to that young monk's room, he says, let me see if he is meditating or not, if he is not, if he is sleeping, I will pour this hot tea in his ears.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I stood, we, I and my friend, he stood outside.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, what's going to happen?
[SPEAKER_00]: He's because he's sleeping, he's a saw that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the senior monk came out, still sipping the tea.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, you know, I was wrong.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's a good boy.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's meditating.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then he walked up and we were puzzled.
[SPEAKER_00]: We just saw he was sleeping.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we sneaked back into the room and we saw.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the young man he had sat up.
[SPEAKER_00]: And with the quilt wrapped around him, only the two eyes were visible.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was looking like this at us.
[SPEAKER_00]: because he was dosing but he had heard this Swami coming and saying I am going to pour the hot tea in.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, he quickly sat up and sat like this, as if he is pretending to meditate.
[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, he didn't make it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he left the order later on.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then comes Rajas 12th verse.
[SPEAKER_00]: Loha pravritirarambha Loha pravritirarambha Karmanama-shamas-preeha Karmanama-shamas-preeha Rajasita-nijayanti Rajasita-nijayanti
[SPEAKER_00]: Vivridhya Bharatarshava, Vivridhya Bharatarshava, greed, activity, undertaking of works, restlessness, desire, these prevail, oh best of the Bharatars, when brought just predominates.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, the commentator here says, Loha, Loha means greed, and he explains.
[SPEAKER_00]: Dhanadhyagame, bhudha, jayamane, api, puna, puna, puna, vadhaman, or bilasha.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, when wealth and property and gadgets, and whatever you like, books, when they come in, when you are getting more and more of them, much more than you would have expected in your life.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all going very well.
[SPEAKER_00]: And there is endless desire.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have got so much money now, I am a millionaire, now I want to become a multi-millionaire.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am a billionaire, now to become a multi-billionaire.
[SPEAKER_00]: See, this is much more than I ever expected in my life.
[SPEAKER_00]: And yet, my desire just keeps on increasing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't, I'm not even aware of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It seems very natural, it seems very natural.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is Rajogun, this is Rajas.
[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, we are talking about it in the context of spiritual life, in the context of devotion, meditation, knowledge, God realization, in that context.
[SPEAKER_00]: In that context, this is a huge obstacle.
[SPEAKER_00]: It might be very fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you are seeking to make your first million on Wall Street to have this hunger, the encourage this kind of hunger, but that too even in the corporate world, in initial stages afterwards they expect some maturity.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this
[SPEAKER_00]: Even when I'm getting a lot, my desire for more just keeps on blazing, more and more and as they say, if you pour butter into fire, the fire blazes even higher.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're thinking, why would you pour butter into fire?
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm talking about ghee in the Vedic fire sacrifices, with the chanting of mantras, the ghee is poured into the fire, but the fire blazes even higher.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then what else?
[SPEAKER_00]: What else is the indication of Rajas, greed is one indication, Ravritty Nityam Kurva Dhrupata, this constant business, constant business, seems to be a great quality, this is the entry ticket to Manhattan.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you are not busy, something is wrong with you.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, this is Rajoguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is Rajas.
[SPEAKER_00]: This constant business is the quality of the body mind, this Rajoguna which keeps you always jumping and hopping.
[SPEAKER_00]: People may praise you for it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You are the guy of the people go to when the need something needs to be done.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember we had this monk, he has passed now, so I can say.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was the hardest worker we ever saw.
[SPEAKER_00]: He told the head of the monastery.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swami, I am available to you from 4am to 11am, from the morning, the Mangalari from that time, till 11am, when I go to bed, anything any time you want, any mint it.
[SPEAKER_00]: and he was there were different departments in the monastery, like the kitchen and stuff like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was the one who did more than like half dozen or at least three or four of us combined.
[SPEAKER_00]: He used to look after three or four departments.
[SPEAKER_00]: We asked why, you said, you know, you have seen the, the, this is the Dhobi's Ghazaha, that means the donkey on which the, the washroom and puts his dirty laundry and he goes to wash the.
[SPEAKER_00]: So unless a load is put on the donkey, the donkey is a load bearing animal unless a load is put on it, it will not start moving, this is, there is no work to be done.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you must load me up with enough work and responsibility and pressure, then I will start moving.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, this is this constant desire to constant inability to stop.
[SPEAKER_00]: I noticed about this monk, the moment he sat for meditation, he fell asleep, he would fall asleep.
[SPEAKER_00]: His working is working like a dynamo, but when he is proceeding for meditation for a sleep, sit for scripture to ask, he would fall asleep.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, this is actually Rajas Rajoguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: Nithyam kurva drupata, constant doing, nature of constant activity, physical activity, busyness.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then, Karmanam, he says, Arambha, Karmanam, Arambha, Grihadi, Nirmanu, Dhyama.
[SPEAKER_00]: Karmadam Aramhamid constantly taking up new projects, yes you must have a project in life, but multiplicity of projects, this, that and the other thing and he gives an example, building houses etc.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, this, if you see monks, I heard this from a senior monk, he went to the Himalayas to meditate.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, I met this wonderful young monk, you could see such a noble bearing or renouncing and you could see it in the fire of renunciation and you could see it in his eyes, genuinely spiritual person.
[SPEAKER_00]: But what was he doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: He was building a cave.
[SPEAKER_00]: He is once the cave is ready, I can meditate.
[SPEAKER_00]: And all day long, he would excavate, you know, soil and rocks from the cave which he was.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was actually cleaning it out.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then he would go all the way down to the Ganga that is climbing.
[SPEAKER_00]: The big climb down, get water and you come up there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this monk would told me, he said, I would look at him and think, if all that effort he put into meditation, how quickly he would advance in spiritual life.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh no, I have to build a make a cave and then the cave is ready, then I will meditate.
[SPEAKER_00]: The trick of the mind, the trick of the mind, which is said at, yes, when a satvic state of mind comes in a desire for spiritual practice, it could be Vedantic study or a self-enquiry, it could be devotional, worship or prayer, it could be listening to budgets, it could be sitting for meditation and repeating the mantra, if the mood comes over you, do it, do it, do it, little pass.
[SPEAKER_00]: The satvic thing has come at that point, do it, it that will increase then, yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Does I have to do good works and keeping busy doing good works?
[SPEAKER_02]: Is that Rajasthan?
[SPEAKER_00]: Does I have to do good works or keeping busy doing good works?
[SPEAKER_00]: If it is done as karma yoga, as a worship of the lot, good.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a spiritual practice.
[SPEAKER_00]: However, there the harmony of the four yoga, start by swam, we wake on this important.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I am doing good work.
[SPEAKER_00]: I am busy helping people and all of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever work I am doing.
[SPEAKER_00]: But am I also doing my regular meditation?
[SPEAKER_00]: Do I also have the capacity of stepping back, pulling back from that?
[SPEAKER_00]: Opposite, it's also bad.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or I'm meditating.
[SPEAKER_00]: I won't work now.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm such a great meditator.
[SPEAKER_00]: If there is the funny story of the monk who the guru called, hey, don't sleep in early in the morning, come and meditate.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a little more maybe, I just slept.
[SPEAKER_00]: And after some time the guru shouted, hey, now it's time to clean the meditation hall.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come and help me.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so this lazy monkey turned over the side and maybe little more and little bit more sleep.
[SPEAKER_00]: When the Guru said, hey, I'm going to the village for a bag for banging for arms.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come and join me and even then the monk didn't come.
[SPEAKER_00]: When the Guru said, after some time he came back and said, hey, lunch is up, come and join me.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this young monk thought, well, I've been disobeying my Guru since the morning.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I should obey him.
[SPEAKER_00]: There is a story in this autobiography of Yogi Paramam say Yogananda, he said he was meditating in the monastery in Kalkata and his guru, but much his name, Yukteswar Giri, so his guru, Yukteswar Giri was sweeping the courtyard and he shouted from downstairs, hey, come down and help me to sweep the courtyard.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so Paramak Siyoga and he says, the old man is always after me to meditate and now that I'm meditating, he's disturbing me, well, I won't reply, he said, I sat quietly, I didn't even reply, didn't acknowledge it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And immediately came the reply from, no, reply means as if to his, he's thought from downstairs from the courtyard, his guru said, if you're too good for this world, you wouldn't be in this, come and help me.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you are too good for this world, you wouldn't have been born here, you are so great that it is it's beneath you to sweep the courtyard, yes, so this balance is necessary, balance of meditation, engagement in work, study, devotion, philosophy, devotion, all of that is good, it's good actually.
[SPEAKER_00]: I used to struggle with meditation when, in our training days, it get up at 340, remember it's the hot-saltry weather of Calcutta and it was summer and you'd have a sweaty night it could get good, don't get good sleep but the bell rings at 340 you have to get up and go for meditation.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you go and sit for meditation and there I am dosing and I wasn't alone to in my
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember one senior monk, poor Swami, he tried so hard, he'd tell us, would plead with us, don't fall asleep immediately, try struggling a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: or the heat or battling with the mosquitoes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then our duty is changed.
[SPEAKER_00]: We had some work to be done.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I got this early morning cleaning of the temples, cleaning of the temple before the gates of the monastery open and people come in.
[SPEAKER_00]: So Swami Brahman in this temple, just on the bank of the river Ganga, so I had to clean it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of the early morning meditation, you go to the temple, the Mangalati is over, then you go to your work, if that's your work,
[SPEAKER_00]: And I found I enjoyed it much more than meditation, much more, it's physical work, it was hard work.
[SPEAKER_00]: For more than one hour I had to sweep and pick up the dry leaves and scrub the temple and the old swam in the temple would come and say, it's not done, do it again.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was hard work, but I really enjoyed it and benefited.
[SPEAKER_00]: See, what was happening is from Thomas to Rajas.
[SPEAKER_00]: and it was a spiritual plus for me because I still remember today with joy and peace in my mind that those that one hour one and a half hours early in the morning for two months I did it and there was only Swami Brahman and then me in the darkness and the river Ganga flowing by.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was a meditation so what can be a meditation, a very uplifting meditation yes in the
[SPEAKER_00]: In the presence of the divine you are working, serving, it's a good meditation, really good.
[SPEAKER_00]: One senior Swami of order told me this once.
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, by boy, there are yogis who can make spiritual progress over comes spiritual obstacles in meditation.
[SPEAKER_00]: There are such people out there, but they are rare and far in between.
[SPEAKER_00]: For the rest of us, he included himself in it, but I know he is a very, very great monk.
[SPEAKER_00]: He said for the rest of us, a little bit of external struggle is necessary, little struggle externally, could be a family, job, health, anything, the cold, the pressure, it is necessary for spiritual development.
[SPEAKER_00]: ashrama, idham, krittva, idham, karishshami, ittyadhi, sankal, pavikal, pah, anuparamaha.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is ashrama, seeslessness.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is seeslessness?
[SPEAKER_00]: He explains here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Having accomplished this, I will accomplish that.
[SPEAKER_00]: To do list.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now all of this sounds like really good management advice, you know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Your HR department will tell you, Consel you do that, you know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Have the project, and you have the to do list, and do your time management, and all of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of that is saying this is Rajogoda.
[SPEAKER_00]: Having done this, I will do that next.
[SPEAKER_00]: What's wrong with it?
[SPEAKER_00]: He says, Anu Parama, and he doesn't stop.
[SPEAKER_00]: You see, a gap somewhere in the, let's fill it up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's do something.
[SPEAKER_00]: Might be the most innate in thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Might be the most useless time-wester.
[SPEAKER_00]: But open, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: What I will not do is sit quietly and meditate.
[SPEAKER_00]: What I will not do is go back to Vedanta.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've done the Vedanta thing, Friday class.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've done, it's done.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, Vedanta is supposed to spread over my whole day.
[SPEAKER_00]: You will see that sounds like such a drag.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it is joy, it is happiness, it is like people say no, meditate okay but how long do you have to meditate, it is like a big child that has been imposed upon us.
[SPEAKER_00]: It should be like the sattva-guni will say it is difficult for that person to come out of meditation, would like to stay longer hours in absorption.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then what else?
[SPEAKER_00]: Spriha.
[SPEAKER_00]: Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha, Uccha,
[SPEAKER_00]: With a moment, Drishtha Mathrashu, the moment I see it, and now it is online, Amazon, I must have this, and I must have that, I must have this one also, and that one also, and keep on acquiring stuff, or planning to acquire stuff, and returning stuff also, and getting more stuff, he says, this,
[SPEAKER_00]: and hardly any of it ever necessary ever to be used or of any particular benefit to life certainly not to spiritually and the time it takes up, the expense, the money which is spent, energy which is spent and the more we have at home, the more the mind is scattered in those things.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why monks have minimal possessions.
[SPEAKER_00]: have very little because the more the sense of position, this is mine, remember a bit of your mind is given there already.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, these are all signs of Rajas again to be applied to oneself, not to others.
[SPEAKER_00]: By these one can know that Rajakona has increased in me, then
[SPEAKER_00]: Abhrakashwapravritischa Abhrakashwapravritischa Pramadu Mahayvacham Pramadu Mahayvacham Tamasita Nijayanti Tamasita Nijayanti Vivrit De Kuru Nandana Vivrit De Kuru Nandana
[SPEAKER_00]: darkness, inactivity, inadvertence as also delusion.
[SPEAKER_00]: These prevail or descendant of Kuru, that is adjunum, when Thomas predominates.
[SPEAKER_00]: It would be make a point here before I forget.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is Thomas, you know, it is inadvertence.
[SPEAKER_00]: You might forget.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's an important point.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why we should not be even attached to Satwakuna?
[SPEAKER_00]: I am going back to the earlier verse.
[SPEAKER_00]: When the mind is calm and you are enjoying the peace of that, we are also warned, don't get attached to that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't feel, I am so alerted.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know so much.
[SPEAKER_00]: My mind is so alert and I am so happy, I am so peaceful, I am so meditative.
[SPEAKER_00]: it's such a joy to be like this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, that's Satwaguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: You are the witness of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: If I do not do that, what will happen is, in a subtle way, I'll start enjoying the peace of the Satwik mind.
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, let's find, it's far better than all the other stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Rajasthan Thamas, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: What will happen is when I start enjoying the peace of, and the happiness in the satvic mind, raga attachment generates slowly.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a satvic kind of attachment, a preference for that kind of a mindset.
[SPEAKER_00]: preference for that kind of a life it begins.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then even the preference is fine, but the subtle enjoyment of that state, it increases desire and desire as rug is connected to Rajas, slowly Rajaguna will increase and it will sweep aside the Satwaguna.
[SPEAKER_00]: When Rajaguna increases,
[SPEAKER_00]: What will happen is that the desire will transform into love, into greed, more of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's still subtle, it's a spiritual level, at the mental level.
[SPEAKER_00]: More of that kind, I want more and more of that kind of a life.
[SPEAKER_00]: That low of her, that increases, that leads to delusion.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're subtly moved away from the spiritual path.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if by chance some poor fellow obstructs your meditation and your peace of mind, then you give him a peace of your mind.
[SPEAKER_00]: When it gets transformed into anger,
[SPEAKER_00]: the Dwayesh, anger, and that leads to more delusion again, back to tamagur.
[SPEAKER_00]: See how it immediately slides down from Satva to Rajas to tamas.
[SPEAKER_00]: The moment you are trapped by any one of these, you will be in the world pool of all three going round and you will pull us down immediately to Rajas and tamas.
[SPEAKER_00]: not that this circle enjoyment of the desire of, you know, peace in the mind, it will not be limited to that desire alone, then all the other desires in the mind also will come and queue up, need to give me a chance, I want this desire to be fulfilled.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is tamo good, aprakashwap pravritisya, pramadamohay vachya, what does the commentator say, aprakashwavay kabrangshah, darkness, darkness, what kind of darkness it,
[SPEAKER_00]: It deludes or covers over my Vivek, my discernment, right and wrong.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is to be done, what is not to be done, what is my duty, what is not my duty.
[SPEAKER_00]: What should I say at this moment, what should I not say, this discrimination, this discernment, right start, right decision, this gets covered over.
[SPEAKER_00]: I might become very angry or and think I am justified in it.
[SPEAKER_00]: This Thomas Rajas is there and Thomas is coming up Pravrity Anudhyama, lack of effort, lack of effort.
[SPEAKER_00]: Both are common quiet.
[SPEAKER_00]: The tamasik person and the Rajas and the Satwik person is the Rajasik person who is dynamic and restless.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Satwik person is calm and the Rajasik person is also calm.
[SPEAKER_00]: Both are sitting and meditating.
[SPEAKER_00]: One is meditating, another one is sleeping.
[SPEAKER_00]: And both we, I am meditating very well.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, one monk told me, one day I said, he said, in the monastery, early morning meditation, I felt I was meditating so well, that day it was going particularly well.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then I felt a gentle blow in my back and looked that the other monk, this cloth which we have, it's called a doctor, he was hitting me with the doctor.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I looked back and what?
[SPEAKER_00]: Sleep if you must, why are you snoring?
[SPEAKER_00]: don't stop.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he is fast asleep and his sleep is thinking, wow, this is really good meditation.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that is Anuddharma, the lack of effort.
[SPEAKER_00]: And here is subtle effort is meant sitting quietly and then internally focusing.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is subtle effort.
[SPEAKER_00]: Pramada, kattabhyar, kattabhyar, Anusandaana,
[SPEAKER_00]: inability to know, what am I supposed to do that?
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not doing what I'm supposed to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And see, it's like, I have a too-do list.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is what I'm going to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've decided, this is what I'm going to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't do it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, by own decision, which illogically, I am contradicting myself, but I don't do it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why laziness, lack of effort?
[SPEAKER_00]: So, Anudhyamaha, lack of effort and oh so this is Kruttabhyatana, Anusandhana, Raityap, this complete lack of orientation about what I am supposed to do and what I am not supposed to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Moha, Mithya of innovation, a deluded identification, a deluded identification with some
[SPEAKER_00]: some sudden project or some some kind of you know something occurs to me and I'm off in that direction although there might be more important work to be done at right now this is some urgent stuff to be done and a fancy catch is me and I'm off following that fancy which has nothing to do with my duty in life with my higher purpose in life that's
[SPEAKER_00]: make myself clear, but I think we understand what is meant, a time-wester.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ah, internet scrolling, that is, it was not there during a Krishna's time.
[SPEAKER_00]: You would have said, that is definite, that is not even religious, that's Thomas, that's Thomas.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is called, or this called doomskrolling, yes, doomskrolling, it's Thomas.
[SPEAKER_00]: Procrastination, I'm Thomas, is I'm engaged in it, happily hours go away and at the end of it, what happens is I feel complete, you know,
[SPEAKER_00]: internal lack of cohesion.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel not enriched by these last two, three hours.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel miserable at the end of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is a sign of a tamasic mind having let time flow in this inadvertent way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then, 14.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yadah satthi pravri dhaitu, yadah satthi pravri dhaitu, pravla yambyati dihabrit, pravla yambyati dihabrit, tadutamavidam lokan, tadutamavidam lokan, amalantrati paddhiyati,
[SPEAKER_00]: Amalan Pratipar, diate, if the embodied self meets with death, when Satu is predominant, then it attains the pure spheres of the worshippers of the highest deities.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, once if in a subject state of mind one can give up the body that means death happens, one goes to Brahma-Loka.
[SPEAKER_00]: quote unquote in general heaven, a higher, higher destiny evades us.
[SPEAKER_00]: And in the Rajas 6th state, we are again reborn in some kind of human birth.
[SPEAKER_00]: And in the Tamil 6th state, in animal birth.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, don't take these two seriously because it also depends heavily upon our past karma, good and bad karma.
[SPEAKER_00]: But a septic state is conducive to
[SPEAKER_00]: The better karma being activated, Rajasukh state is sort of the middleing karma, the tamasukh state while dying is the danger of our bad karma taking over.
[SPEAKER_00]: Number 15.
[SPEAKER_00]: Rajasi Pralayam, Gattva, Rajasi Pralayam, Gattva, Karma Sangishoja, Yate, Karma Sangishoja, Yate, Tatha Pralinas, Tamasi, Tatha Pralinas, Tamasi, Mūra Yoni Shoja, Yate, Mūra Yoni Shoja, Yate, If it meets with death,
[SPEAKER_00]: The sentient being, when Rajas is predominant, then it is born amongst those who are attached to work likewise if it meets with death, when Thomas is predominant, then it is born in the womb of irrational species.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is animals and plants.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll wrap it up here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Does anybody have a question or, you know, so many, you have already had your say so many.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can just ask the question, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: So Shroka 11, when you said all the senses will be illumined.
[SPEAKER_00]: Will be illumined, yes, alert.
[SPEAKER_02]: High power alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not hyper alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not drugged alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not caffeinated alert.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luminous alert, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: could that become a source of distraction?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, not in that sense.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is a Rajasthan state.
[SPEAKER_00]: When I am very alert and small thing distracts me also.
[SPEAKER_00]: Only in some cases I see what you mean.
[SPEAKER_00]: In the presence of
[SPEAKER_00]: their holy mother I think, you know this cloth which it comes in those days they would have to, it would come in big pieces, you would have to tear it.
[SPEAKER_00]: When you tear cloth there is a tearing sound, somebody did it in her presence and she felt it like in a heart, like a blow to our heart, imagine the state of the mind of such a person.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, you are right, distraction means small things, you can feel like a thunderbolt for them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Small impurities, small disturbances, the mindset very centered and quiet.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes when they're absorbed, even big disturbances, they cannot hear.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's because the mind is completely absorbed.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if the mind is open to the world and still, it's very quiet inward, a sudden sound, for example.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swami Shankaran and the Jews, the president of the order.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was specially sensitive, so he is the president of the whole, the whole order in the monastery, one monk told me, this was in the 1950s.
[SPEAKER_00]: a young man, he had become to become a monk, he, his duty was, there was a big clock outside the room of the president, you have to wind it up and set the time right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that day that evening he had forgotten to do it, and he was, he remembered,
[SPEAKER_00]: And the evening, Rathi, after the evening, Rathi was over when all the monks are supposed to bury it.
[SPEAKER_00]: He suddenly remembered.
[SPEAKER_00]: It happens.
[SPEAKER_00]: When you are inadvertently forgotten to sit for meditation, suddenly remember all sorts of work comes to your mind.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that was done.
[SPEAKER_00]: This I should have done.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, this still remaining.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you remember, oh, oh, the President, the clock outside the President's room, I didn't wind it up today, but this is a meditation tank, the whole monastery is absolutely quiet.
[SPEAKER_00]: So he said, I sneaked back up to this on the first floor, the President's room was next to Swami, they came to the room.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, Swami, they came that past 50 years before that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, he went there and he carefully put a stool in front of the door inside the president was there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swamishankaranjan meditating probably and he carefully on the stool, he took off his sandals stood up on that stool, reached for the clock and there was a click or a tick.
[SPEAKER_00]: and from inside and Swami Shankaranji had a booming voice.
[SPEAKER_00]: I never heard him along before my time, but those who have heard him, he was a huge man, and he was scarily still, he would sit like a statue.
[SPEAKER_00]: And somebody told me, in fact, my grandmother told me, she was a disciple of Swami Shankaranji, she said, it's like a voice coming out of a cave.
[SPEAKER_00]: So from that voice, it's this monk told me that voice came from the room,
[SPEAKER_00]: at this hour, who dares abandon his meditations, seat and wonder about?
[SPEAKER_00]: So he said, I jump from the two and I ran for it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Leaving my sandals there and the two louts I just don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know if he was again called to task for that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But see, a slight sound, just a slightest of sounds.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another monk is, again, Swami Shankaramatiya, because you told me I'd remember this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another monk, okay, that's the second story.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another monk told me this story.
[SPEAKER_00]: Please,
[SPEAKER_00]: He would walk in a company and he was called by Swami Shankaranji.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come, give me your sandals.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swami, what are you saying?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I will put rubber ties on them.
[SPEAKER_00]: You walk nicely.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the other one was told to be by my own father, because his mother, my grandmother was a disciple of Swami Shankaranji.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when my father got his first job,
[SPEAKER_00]: My grandmother told him, go to Guru and bow down to him, take his blessings.
[SPEAKER_00]: So my father said, he was a young man here, so he went to Swami Shankar and the bowed down.
[SPEAKER_00]: Swami Shankar and the was of man of very few words.
[SPEAKER_00]: He would sit, unnaturally still.
[SPEAKER_00]: We bowed down and he even bowed down a coin which was in his pocket, slipped out and fell with a clink on the floor, like a clink.
[SPEAKER_00]: So Amishankaranji said, pick it up, you will need it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_03]: We need some assistance from those involved with Dora's care at the moment.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, Ramanthi, let me just see.
