Hottest product and need to study not again.
     You're listening to the Radcast.
If it's radical, we cover it.
     Here's your host, Ryan Alford.
Guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast.
It's our weekly marketing and advertising news here on July 9th, 2021.
     I'm Ryan Alford.
     And I'm Josh Hill.
And we are here in the Radcast studio, the home of Radical.
The baddest, coolest, greatest, if I dare say, digital ad agency in the country.
And we are excited to talk about this week's news, post July 4th.
     How many hot dogs?
Did you have any hot dog eating contest?
Oh, man, no contest, but got one down.
I think I had a couple of winners on Sunday or Saturday.
I don't know. No buns, though.
     No buns.
     I had more burgers, though.
     Yeah.
We did all kinds of cooking out the lake.
     It was a good weekend.
     Lots of sun.
     Lots of beers.
     You do many beers.
     I don't know.
     Just a thousand beers.
     Yeah, a thousand.
I think it may have had a hundred beers between the five days.
We were there like Friday to Monday night.
I think we drove back Tuesday morning.
     I don't know.
     I did it today.
     Yeah.
Any memorable moments from the 4th?
     Oh, man.
It's all some fireworks at a party.
And there's a group of children.
And one of the spark streams from one of the fireworks became very close to those kids.
     Oh, no.
And so a lot of them ran away screaming.
     So that was memorable.
     Did you shoot any fireworks?
No, I just watched this year.
     Did a couple of streamers.
     Yeah.
There was like, there was like 17 fireworks that was going on around us.
     It was a pretty spectacular.
I was like trying to add up.
     How much?
You know, I'm not like the most frugal person, but it was just going.
How much money did each one of it?
I was kind of see like how high the fireworks go like comparing.
You tell how much money was spent.
How wide or how is it?
The higher they go, the more expensive or the wider the boom.
     Oh, man.
     Great question.
     I want to know.
I remember checking out some fireworks with friends.
And we were like, oh, these are way more expensive than we thought.
And we're not going to cut into our peer budget for this.
     So we left.
That sounds like an Instagram channel of fireworks with friends.
     Yeah.
     FWF.
     FWF.
We're going to start your new channel.
     Perfect.
     Fireworks with friends.
     What could go wrong there?
     Nothing.
     Fails with friends.
     Yeah.
So it's been a good week.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
Any hot or memorable client moments this week so far as we're a little bit in the summer
haze like there's work going on.
     It's busy.
Think but clients and people people on vacation schedules who got in and out.
You know, it's not that we're any less busy or stuff going on.
But I feel like some of the normal.
I don't know for easiness is settled down a bit that fair to say.
     I think so.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
New regular campaigns and some good old campaign maintenance going on.
     Yeah.
I had some really great team meetings this week of coming up some some fun ideas.
     Yeah.
We have these brainstorm meetings and let me just say this.
I try to I come into some I try to stay out of them because I think I like.
     Yes.
     Everybody.
     I don't know why.
     But it's like.
     Dude.
     Most of my ideas.
     Anyway.
I'm not having a call or doing something but there was quite a ruckus going on in the
     old conference room.
Anything you could share Josh or we get these things all have to stay on the shelf.
They'll be revealed and their time.
But we're getting some funny bones in there.
     That's good.
     That's good.
And our on our Google trends of the week.
I did notice looking at today's.
     Or this week's trending topics.
It was like number two when I looked this up.
So technically being a Friday episode.
This was technically on Thursday yesterday.
But the old Megan Fox was like trending Megan Fox and machine gun Kelly.
Do they get your radar normally?
Is they pop up every every couple weeks?
     Okay.
     Yeah.
I mean, there was a big stink supposedly.
     She was.
I'm out there doing a man woman.
So machine gun Kelly's four years younger than she is.
And everybody gives her shit for that.
     Yeah.
     Which I think is stupid.
     And then the last.
I someone's going to hear this and like send it to being gun Kelly's people.
And I'm probably going to like it like blasted.
But I'm just going to say this.
Can we just not I'm fine with the alternative look.
     I've got tattoos.
I'm cool with the the earrings.
This is not a judgment at all of that.
It's more just that he just looks out of it.
You know, like in the pictures.
And I'm just like, dude, I mean, you're with a chick like.
     Yeah.
     You be you.
I'm not talking about you being you.
I'm not even talking about pretty ugly.
I'm not even making that comment.
It's more just the spaced out look.
     Yeah.
You know, like, is that perfected or is that like just by random?
Maybe it's just like he's just worn out from trying to keep up with Megan Fox.
     The legendary Megan Fox.
     Yes.
     Yeah.
     He got homie looks tired.
     Homie does look tired.
     He always looks tired.
He's kind of out of it.
     And I'm not.
I don't even want to say like, oh, he looks like he's on drugs.
     I'm not judging like that.
     It's more just.
     I don't know.
I'm not excited to be anywhere.
     Yeah.
     Like, they'd be happy, man.
     He's an interesting dude.
Maybe Fox is next to me.
You know, I'm going to single guy.
If I was a single guy, Megan Fox, I'm not in a bad mood.
     Yeah.
I mean, they're just like smiling eater ear.
     I'm just crying.
     Yes.
     One or the other.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     So anything good?
We always do our little segment with TikTok with any of the trending hashtags or, you
know, concepts or just things that you're seeing over anything.
     Hit the right door.
     That's some weird ones.
     I wanted to bring up.
     All right.
One of the trending ones is TikTok resumes.
I've seen this for like specific, like specific internships that maybe like a media agency's
done where they're like, we're trying to be cool, like do a resume or whatever.
But I've been seeing some that were other people trying to give like business advice.
And these are like 19 year olds trying to give a business advice.
It's not their TikTok resume to say, I'm a TikTok influencer.
     This is my TikTok.
It's like, this is my TikTok resume for getting a real job somewhere else.
     Yeah.
This is this is what it's becoming.
People are trying to make it.
And so I saw a couple where they're like trying to be really personal and like, here's
     what I do.
     Here's my experience, blah, blah.
     I like to do this.
And I was like, this is very it for a very niche job market.
     Yeah.
I don't even know what jobs they're applying for, but how many managers or people that would
hire them are there, you know, like looking like someone, just imagining how you get that
to the someone like you just send them the link.
And then someone, I just imagine someone open to that link in my bio.
     Yeah.
It's like someone sent a TikTok resume and like, do what now?
     Yeah.
     What?
Can you check out my TikTok resume?
This is how you email for a job application and like, see link here and it's just go watch
     this video.
     Yeah.
My advice for this is if you're trying to do a social media job, I would maybe treat it
like a portfolio and not a resume.
But you know, like for a job in an ad agency, I could, I could, if it was done creatively
as well, I could be down with that.
     Oh, yeah.
I'm not so sure, you know, if you're going to be an investment banker or something or I
don't know, something more mainstream, that it's going to be, I don't know, hopefully
maybe managers can see the creativity and anything.
     We'll see.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     I'm sure it'll happen.
     And we'll see.
     What else to see in?
Another one, this restock trend is massive, it's huge.
And so the whole trend is centered around watching people get home from the grocery store
and they have all these like, you know, the plastic clear bins for refrigerators and cabinets
     and stuff.
People just very neatly organizing the groceries inside of it.
And so they'll take out like a multi bag of chips and then carefully place each one in
     there.
They'll open up their ramen packets, put it there, their sauce, this is at home restocking.
     Yeah.
So they're like taking things out of packages and putting them in different packages and
     people love watching it.
     They're getting millions of views.
There's like, there's billions, actual billions of uses of the hashtag like restock, a restock
     trend.
     I'm not into it.
     Yeah.
If my wife would enjoy this, if she watched, if she got to watch me doing these, this is
what she would do because I just, you know, that's, that's kind of, it's not that I'm
not organized with certain things, but, you know, she comes home and she organizes for
the grocery goes, I could, and she's a very, right, rules person, very organized person
     like that.
I think it would, because she told me this morning, literally, she's been off this week.
And she said the, it gets the most satisfaction by making the bed up every point because sometimes
we're both in such a hurry, like we're running out, we're kids everywhere, we're doing
     this stuff.
And it's not that we're slabs.
It's just the bed sometimes gets left behind in the morning.
A lot of times he gets left behind in the morning, mainly because I'm still in it when
     she's leaving.
And I don't make it up.
Even though it's kind of like one of those things, it's like, I guess I have this structure,
I could gym, I do things in some ways.
I am a very structured like organized person, but making it at the bed, even though they
say, and I say, well, if you make your bed up in the morning, it starts on the right
foot, every like book you read that's like, you know, goal setting and all these things.
And I'm like, bullshit, you know, I got my stuff together and I don't make my fucking
     bed.
But with that said, it's, my wife has enjoyed that.
I think she would enjoy the restocking.
Yeah, a lot of people do.
Do you make your bed every morning when you get up?
     Absolutely.
     Okay.
     I, yeah.
     Daniel are produced.
Daniel, do you, do you, you make every, I guess, pretty good.
     You guys are great.
     Daniel, one out of three.
     Not too bad.
     Nice, nice.
And lastly, what else we got on TikTok?
This is my, the fun one that's been around for a little bit, but it's gotten really big
     this week.
     It's a song.
The sound comes in and then all of a sudden it's just, we do not care.
     And like a beat drops.
And so it's just like beneath by a bunch of different people of like, oh, like someone's
trying to tell you how to do something, like, oh, that's not how you do it.
And people like be like cooking in the most ridiculous way or like wearing something
     weird.
And they're just like, we do not care.
I think they, they, they show them doing something for a little while and then they played
     that we do not care.
     There is one.
I was like, Mari, he was, he did one where they're like, well, we like miss your old
show, like, oh, what the way you used to do things and something and he's like, we do
     not care.
And it's just him like posing hard and stuff is cool.
     All right.
     Love to see it.
     We'll get that one.
     A ding.
     Cool.
We'll move straight to the news.
     Number one on the list.
     I like this one.
It was just, like, we had to put a stake in the ground, according to Instagram, they have
put a stake in the ground and they are saying we are no longer a photo sharing app.
     Wow.
News of the week after how many product launches like we do not want to be considered a photo
     earrings.
     We have 17 other features.
And I was like, okay, they feel like they needed to say that like with Tik Tok, everything
     else taking off.
It's like, we need to come out and say this.
We need to make sure people know it's not just photos anymore.
     Yeah.
Of all people, I've only seen one person say anything about this online and they're like,
     this is stupid.
This makes me not want to use the app anymore.
     I was like, that's a weird response.
     Yeah, no.
I was like, also it's mostly just like a categorization in the app store, like, I mean, I'd love
     to know the percentage.
     I don't know.
This is probably out there, but like story content versus, you know, photo posts.
I have to think it's got that it's almost more store.
I would think more stories than posts.
So it's like, and most, I know there's pictures and stories.
I put pictures and stories, but like 70% of story content is video or motion of some
     sorts.
     Is that a fair estimate?
And so, okay, we got to come out and say it.
They did say, here's what they, the four things they are, Josh, number one, they're no longer
     photo sharing.
They don't even have it in their top four, what they're for, number one, we are four
     creators.
We'll come back to these as we go through.
     Number two, video, no shit.
Number three, shopping, okay, social commerce, number three, and number four, messaging.
     None of those surprise you?
     I guess not.
Maybe the top of the shopping.
     I don't know.
I don't know a lot of people who shop on Instagram, but apparently people are doing it.
     I guess.
I'm just shopping, but I know that people were selling them things, they're shopping
     inadvertently.
     Right.
We're disturbing them with ads that make them shop.
That's what we do here at the agency.
But intentional shopping, I know they have the shopping button.
And maybe I'm the only, like, but like I do buy stuff through the ads.
     The ads work on me.
     Yeah.
Okay, they should work on you too.
     This is actually a commercial.
The ads should work on you.
That's ads, ads, ads, ads from the ad agency.
But in all seriousness, the, but actually hitting the shopping button to just browse
through stuff has not become every week behavior for me yet.
     Yeah.
     It's not my Amazon.
But maybe it will now because they say that it should be.
I could see the moving, I could see the moving something like Facebook Marketplace on there.
     Yeah.
     Right.
With all these other features, they're just making a Facebook with a different layout.
     I like that, Josh.
     Mm-hmm.
     That's a double ding.
     Oh, yeah.
There's an idea for you there Instagram.
I probably thought of it already because I do use the hell out of some marketplace.
     Yeah.
Even when I'm not, I kind of do shop there.
     Even when I'm not shopping.
I have keywords things saved, like, you know, I'm always looking at, like, for the office,
     like, patio for sure.
I got that, like, saved case.
There's something like unique that pops up.
We want to throw it in here.
And then, like, I don't know, some other random topics, but I'll kind of just ruse it, make
     sure it's nice.
Not giving away something that I want.
     Totally.
I've gotten plenty of things from there.
Everything on Instagram that is shopping feels, feels more like just another e-commerce,
like, policy, commerce store, which is fine.
It's not really used goods, right?
That could definitely be a detour, I'm going to get that one another ding.
     Yeah.
And then messaging, it seems normal, even though I will say, having gotten way more into
this recently and we do some DM campaigns for clients and stuff like this, but I get
a lot of DMs, I think, relatively.
People selling me stuff, people DM me to be on podcasts, whatever it is.
And it's not a great experience, the messaging app.
You know, you can't, like, can't put stuff in folders, you can't save anything.
You can't wear email and certain other things.
     And I know it's a different messaging.
It's not the greatest of experience for mass messaging.
It's still, like, really kind of chat-centric and that's where I mean, like, my personally
use of it comes in is, like, group messages and, like, recently, like, friends have been
inviting, like, throwing, like, parties and cookouts.
Like, the cookouts I went to last weekend were all, like, started from Instagram group
messages, which is interesting, but that way, it's a little more temporary.
And you, like, that is the frustrating part is you can't save anything.
It's all, like, the videos and pictures you send are, depending on how you send it
     or temporary.
What they've got this hodgepodge going on between trying to be, like, Snapchat, they try
to, they're disappearing content and all that, and then trying to be, like, Facebook with
     messaging.
And then there's somewhere in the messy middle.
     Right.
     And it's not optimal.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
It makes it really difficult for, like, advertising from messaging.
     Yes.
     It does.
The second news of the week is, TikTok is testing cameo features.
If you don't know what cameo type features were creators or superstars or celebrities, basketball
players, whatever cameos and app where you could get them to do shout out videos for
     you.
I did one of these for actually Nicole did for thing.
I had Chris Harrison, who's been canceled cultured, but made a lot of money in the process.
Did the shout out for her and he really handed up and, and, but you can get videos where
they call you out and say things, I'll give it a yes.
But TikTok's testing a similar thing were creators and everything to get paid for custom
     shout outs.
What do you think of this?
I think it makes a lot of sense.
     Yeah.
It's one of those things where it's the feature, not a like platform in a way where I think
that was kind of what like clubhouse was is a feature, not a, like, it's exactly right.
But I think it makes a lot of sense in the TikTok world, especially with the way, like,
     the user base interacts.
Like, they're always trying to get the shout outs in the comments.
They're like, always replying, hoping that they'll get a video response to the, I think
it makes sense for Instagram too.
     Absolutely.
I mean, it's the same thing.
All these influencers and celebrities and all these people on there and it's another
way for, you know, everyone to monetize it and, you know, people pay for it.
     It's, it's cool.
     I think it's fun.
     Yeah.
But again, to your point, it's a feature when you have a network built in.
I mean, cameo has to their credit, they built up the network of celebrities, but it's
kind of like, I get on there right now and I see if there's something to be something
fun, you know, like a friend and I feel like the quality goes up and down of certain
ones that do it, but I don't know, but if it's built into the platform where people already
are naturally, including celebrities, then I think you could, do you take off?
So I think that will be successful.
And finally, I like this one, deportly hides giveaway codes, so they've had TV spots
     this week.
They've been hiding giveaway codes where you can enter to win a bunch of money and lots
     of burritos.
It's been like embedded into the TV screen.
It's the game within a game.
     I think this is fun.
I think it's a good way to interject online offline, especially if you're like watching
at home or something like that.
     Yeah.
And then kind of intermixing, it seemed like a nice play.
     What do you think?
     Absolutely.
I mean, this is like a real value offer.
     Yeah.
     Right.
We tell clients all the time and with our own stuff is like, you're going to make an ad,
     like, have a compelling offer.
If you want to improve your response, improve your offer.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
     Yes.
And I think it's like a, they're giving me like up to a million dollars worth of burritos
     it could be.
     That would be cool.
     Yes.
And I just wanted to like, I do think you like Spotle.
     Oh, yeah.
     Yeah.
I mean, you don't like it.
We don't have some chips or whatever where they like in the realm of venturing a little
     bit here.
But we got bar burritos, Chipotle, Mose, Esada, I think, or something.
I mean, it starts with the name.
     I think that's great.
     Yeah.
     That's local.
But there's other, like, what's the favorite take out the local?
I think it is named the local.
Let's pick out just the national change.
     Oh, yeah.
     National ones.
     Oh, man.
If a burritos, bar burritos are Mose and it's a Potle.
We're right next to each other.
     I'm probably ahead of Chipotle.
     Yeah.
I kind of went up and down with their little bit of a snag with the, get everybody sick.
     Yeah.
But it does taste a little fresher.
     Yeah.
You know, and bar burritos is up on my list too.
Like, I really, they're more of a local team.
I think they got like 50 locations.
They seem to be splitting the difference between Mose and Chipotle for me.
     Yeah.
But Mose, I love because it's a little more like, closer to the Taco Bell Spectrum,
     which I love.
I'm not, I don't think of it as like a fancy, like disgusting.
I think of it more of like a horizontal thing of like your, your fun Taco Bell, like drunk
food versus like your classy, refreshing Chipotle.
     Yeah.
We're going back to the marketing play here, the venture there into the food.
     Hope we made you hungry.
     Yeah.
     Yeah.
I do like the notion of building in gate.
Like when you do content, whether it's a video or a post or something, building some
natural, and not when I say natural, built into the content, the, the action or the step
for people to take interactivity, probably the better way, gamification.
I really like versus called, you know, this like showing something called action, go
     visit here.
But when you get someone and truly engage where they have to engage with the content to
kind of get something out of it, which leads to another step.
     I really like that.
     Yeah.
And you're thinking about campaigns, engaging beyond just a click and it's your in it.
And then you have that you have the like tangible actual burrito thing put in your face.
     Exactly.
     I like it.
