The Happiness Guarantee: Insights from Vedanta | Dr. Janki Santoke
Dr. Janki Santoke explores the Vedantic understanding of happiness, explaining that lasting joy cannot be found in external objects, achievements, relationships, or even spiritual institutions, but must be discovered and cultivated within oneself. She defines happiness as the cessation of mental agitation, traces agitation to desire, and shows how Vedanta offers a practical path through karma yoga, bhakti yoga, and jnana yoga to purify the mind, sharpen the intellect, reduce desires, and move toward true peace, self-mastery, and ultimately Self-realization.
Dr. Janki Santoke (PhD, Philosophy) is a senior disciple of world-renowned guru, Swami A. Parthasarathy. She has spent more than three decades disseminating the knowledge of Vedanta to the general public, helping enhance the quality of their lives. She facilitates this through online weekly sessions, public talks, workshops, seminars, retreats and written articles. To learn more, please visit: https://janki.santoke.com

[SPEAKER_03]: Good morning everybody and welcome. [SPEAKER_03]: It is my pleasure to introduce you today the subject of this wonderful video you have [SPEAKER_03]: Dr. Santok is an author, public speaker, and a scholar of the Dante philosophy. [SPEAKER_03]: She holds a PhD in philosophy and is a senior disciple of the renowned guru Swamipata Saruta. [SPEAKER_03]: Over the last three decades, she has dedicated her work to making ancient Indian wisdom [SPEAKER_03]: She is the founder and managing trustee over Dante Wisdom Trust, which you just saw, which focuses on teaching the timeless principles of a Dante, and is leading the Trust's effort to establish the world's first Vedanta University. [SPEAKER_03]: She's the author of several books focused on applied philosophy, including how do you know what you know, focused on correcting, thinking for successful living, and the happiness guarantee trilogy that you just saw on the screen. [SPEAKER_03]: Dr. Santok conducts regular online classes, public talks and corporate workshops. [SPEAKER_03]: Her teachings emphasise that while modern education helps one to make a living, wisdom, specifically Vedanta, teaches one how to live. [SPEAKER_03]: She often discusses topics such as the law of karma, mental clarity and self-discovery. [SPEAKER_03]: You can follow her latest updates and lectures on her official website, Vedanta Philosophy, or her YouTube channel, Team Janki Sound Talk. [SPEAKER_03]: The subject of her talk today, which we're very much looking forward to, is the happiness guarantee insights from Vedanta. [SPEAKER_03]: You're so welcome. [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for coming. [SPEAKER_03]: OK, so today we're going to speak about the happiness guarantee. [SPEAKER_06]: What in this world will guarantee us happiness? [SPEAKER_06]: All the first, all the time, are doing nothing but trying to become happy. [SPEAKER_06]: But so really to be even positive the question, what if I do, will I be happy? [SPEAKER_06]: We chase careers, we chase relationships, we chase money, we chase hell, [SPEAKER_06]: No, not completely satisfied, then we chase spirituality. [SPEAKER_06]: We do all sorts of things in this world to find happiness. [SPEAKER_04]: Can't find it. [SPEAKER_04]: Except in brief patches. [SPEAKER_06]: So, none of these can give us happiness, not spirituality. [SPEAKER_06]: We believe that if we go to spirituality, we will be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: No, nobody can give you happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: No teachings, no guru, no ashram, no Vedanta University. [SPEAKER_06]: Nothing can give it. [SPEAKER_06]: Only one person can give you happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: And that is your own self. [SPEAKER_06]: To talk about getting happiness from all these other places [SPEAKER_06]: saying, I've bought all the best tools of the world. [SPEAKER_06]: They're all in my garage, but not all the tools of the world can give you a table. [SPEAKER_04]: That you have to make yourself. [SPEAKER_04]: So all the rest is just tools. [SPEAKER_06]: Happiness we're going to create ourselves. [SPEAKER_06]: But how? [SPEAKER_06]: First we've got to understand what [SPEAKER_06]: We think that if I get that object, I'll be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: My whole life has gone in that. [SPEAKER_06]: Remember when we were in school, if we only got a certain percentage, we'd be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: If we only got admission to Ivy League, we'd be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: If only we got that great job, we'd be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: If only my startup works, I'd be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: If only if only if only, and then finally if only I get grandchildren, I'll be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: If only my grandchildren speak to me, I'll be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: All the time, if only, goes on. [SPEAKER_06]: With chest and chest and chest and it seems to just go further away. [SPEAKER_06]: So let's think Sam and this, what is Vedanta as the art or examining things? [SPEAKER_06]: Let's just examine it. [SPEAKER_06]: Is there an object in the world that is capable of providing any happiness? [SPEAKER_06]: I'm not talking about infinite happiness, any happiness. [SPEAKER_04]: Is there such an object? [SPEAKER_06]: You know, you see a person, smoke, it's the most incredible thing, I'm going to watch it. [SPEAKER_06]: There is a man, he hasn't smoked for a few hours. [SPEAKER_06]: He's longing to smoke, we don't allow them to smoke around us. [SPEAKER_06]: So there are some places we have designated at the airport, you can go there and smoke, you haven't designated places. [SPEAKER_06]: He goes there, watch it, he goes there, he lights up. [SPEAKER_06]: And he takes a breath of, I don't know what Nirvana it looks like. [SPEAKER_06]: I like so, I watch this and I'm just fascinated to see them do that. [SPEAKER_06]: That same secret causes immense irritation to the rest of us. [SPEAKER_06]: You see, and guy, light up next to you, you want him to throw him out, go away from you. [SPEAKER_06]: Right? [SPEAKER_06]: The object being the same causes pleasure to one and pain to another. [SPEAKER_06]: My husband has motion sickness. [SPEAKER_06]: I love going on crudes, so sometimes he has to accompany me. [SPEAKER_06]: So we go on there, you know, we go outside Mumbai, we can go to, you all are being to Mumbai? [SPEAKER_06]: Yes? [SPEAKER_06]: but we'll take you on this beautiful cruise that goes to Elephanta. [SPEAKER_06]: How does Elephanta? [SPEAKER_06]: Elephanta caves. [SPEAKER_06]: So the beautiful thing, you'll go on that cruise and that beautiful breeze and it's so wonderful. [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm thinking, oh wow, this is heaven. [SPEAKER_06]: And my poor husband is throwing up his own misery. [SPEAKER_06]: It's said that he's cursing himself, he's cursing me. [SPEAKER_06]: causes joy to one, and displeasure to another, how is this happening? [SPEAKER_06]: If that object had that pleasure, then everybody should get it. [SPEAKER_06]: Fire is hot. [SPEAKER_06]: Anyone of us going near it will feel the heat? [SPEAKER_06]: Sure there is sweet. [SPEAKER_06]: Any one of us putting it on our tongue? [SPEAKER_06]: We'll experience that sweetness. [SPEAKER_06]: The cause of the heat is the fire. [SPEAKER_06]: The cause of the sweetness is the sugar, and we will all experience it like that. [SPEAKER_04]: But the happiness in your object, how come you don't experience it? [SPEAKER_06]: Not only different people don't experience it, the same person doesn't. [SPEAKER_06]: What was happiness to you one day? [SPEAKER_06]: Is not happiness to another day? [SPEAKER_06]: Remember that toy you wanted in childhood, you were longing and craving for it, and you got it. [SPEAKER_06]: Will you be that excited? [SPEAKER_06]: Can I argue with you and say, oh, when I gave it to you when you were five years old, you were so happy. [SPEAKER_06]: Why are you not happy today? [SPEAKER_06]: Because me happiness at one time, same thing will not cause me happiness at another time. [SPEAKER_06]: Remember, the day you got married, and now, it's different. [SPEAKER_06]: So how is it that we believe? [SPEAKER_06]: that an object will give us happiness when the happiness doesn't reside there. [SPEAKER_06]: It is not the cause of happiness. [SPEAKER_04]: So what is the cause of happiness? [SPEAKER_04]: What is the cause of happiness? [SPEAKER_04]: What is happiness? [SPEAKER_06]: Happiness is defined as Sensation of mental agitations. [SPEAKER_06]: Happiness is defined as cessation of mental agitations. [SPEAKER_06]: Where do these agitations come from? [SPEAKER_06]: Why do we can agitate? [SPEAKER_06]: Put two soft? [SPEAKER_06]: Oops. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, please tell me. [SPEAKER_06]: Every time I give a lecture, people tell me. [SPEAKER_06]: How, how, what how will you speak? [SPEAKER_06]: How will you explain? [SPEAKER_06]: Only difficulty was I didn't hear anything. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know, so please tell me when you don't hear. [SPEAKER_06]: Are you good? [SPEAKER_06]: Are you good still? [SPEAKER_06]: Good, one gentleman, where is, where is our? [SPEAKER_06]: Can you increase it a bit? [SPEAKER_06]: Can you hear now? [SPEAKER_04]: Can you hear this one or this one? [SPEAKER_04]: What? [SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: You want to come in front? [SPEAKER_04]: Would you like to? [SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: All right. [SPEAKER_04]: So, where will we? [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_04]: What has happened is happiness, happiness, cessation of lentils, agitations, where do agitations come from? [SPEAKER_06]: All agitation is the cause of any agitation, which you have ever experienced in your whole life, is only desire. [SPEAKER_04]: It is the single cause of agitation. [SPEAKER_05]: So what is happiness? [SPEAKER_05]: It is the absence of agitation. [SPEAKER_05]: It is the absence of desire. [SPEAKER_06]: We are chasing desires in the hope of being happy, and happening. [SPEAKER_06]: You cannot accelerate desire and hope to be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: It can't be done. [SPEAKER_06]: I guess I'm saying this in the wrong place in the world. [SPEAKER_06]: New York is a complete opposite. [SPEAKER_06]: Or maybe this is one small oasis where it's not. [SPEAKER_06]: The whole world believes that that chasing or that desire is going to give me happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: Really? [SPEAKER_06]: Who's found him that way? [SPEAKER_06]: What do anyone who has done this? [SPEAKER_06]: Have they found it? [SPEAKER_06]: Then what are we doing? [SPEAKER_06]: What are we following a method that doesn't work? [SPEAKER_06]: Are you so doubted? [SPEAKER_06]: You can see it doesn't work in your lives. [SPEAKER_06]: You can see it doesn't work in other people's lives. [SPEAKER_06]: Why are we doing this? [SPEAKER_04]: It has never worked. [SPEAKER_04]: Because happiness is equal to cessation of agitation. [SPEAKER_06]: All agitation comes from. [SPEAKER_06]: Desire. [SPEAKER_06]: How can you get it living in desire? [SPEAKER_06]: That's why it's real religion has warned us against desire. [SPEAKER_06]: Every religion has personified it as the thing that stands between you and God. [SPEAKER_06]: The Christians call it the devil. [SPEAKER_06]: Islam calls it shatant. [SPEAKER_04]: Buddhism calls it marah. [SPEAKER_06]: Hinduism calls it asura. [SPEAKER_06]: All this bad stuff that stands between you and that divinity, that state of absolute tranquility and bliss. [SPEAKER_04]: Desire is agitation, absence of desire is peace. [SPEAKER_06]: Do it your love all like I don't know whether I really true. [SPEAKER_06]: Just think about it. [SPEAKER_06]: Even when [SPEAKER_06]: You guide happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: Out of full film and effort desire, it is just the absence of the desire that gives us pleasure. [SPEAKER_04]: Suppose you are craving a chocolate. [SPEAKER_04]: You eat a chocolate. [SPEAKER_04]: You read a bliss. [SPEAKER_04]: Where is this bliss coming from? [SPEAKER_04]: Can you analyse that? [SPEAKER_06]: You had a craving, you ate the chocolate, the craving, the desire went away, and therefore we experience happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: You can never experience happiness with desire. [SPEAKER_06]: It's only when the desire goes away that the happiness is experienced. [SPEAKER_04]: Isn't that true? [SPEAKER_04]: You warned something. [SPEAKER_06]: You get it. [SPEAKER_06]: You think that that object is giving happiness? [SPEAKER_06]: No, it's only the removal of the desire that's giving happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: So if you see and learn and get a better house, I'd be happy, yes, you will be. [SPEAKER_04]: But the happiness is going to go away because... Because desires no longer there, how will you get that contrast? [SPEAKER_06]: That means five years later, you're going to be in the same house and no pleasure in it. [SPEAKER_06]: So what do you do now? [SPEAKER_06]: Get a bigger house. [SPEAKER_06]: And when you get a bigger house, you find the happiness again. [SPEAKER_06]: Because again, the drop of agitation took place. [SPEAKER_06]: Then again, few years later gone, what do you do now? [SPEAKER_06]: Get a bigger house and bigger house and bigger house. [SPEAKER_06]: and become maintenance bills and bigger having to places to clean and then people say buy a my stressed. [SPEAKER_06]: How can we not be? [SPEAKER_04]: You're getting the same sorrow at a higher price. [SPEAKER_04]: So let's think about it because we're humans, we can think. [SPEAKER_04]: So where it happened is coming from? [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, let's see. [SPEAKER_04]: What is the formula for happiness? [SPEAKER_04]: Happiness is equal to the number of desires fulfilled upon can you read this? [SPEAKER_04]: entertainment. [SPEAKER_06]: What is the formula for this? [SPEAKER_04]: The number of desires fulfilled upon the number [SPEAKER_04]: What's my happiness? [SPEAKER_04]: Right? [SPEAKER_06]: Now, suppose I am a New Yorker and very ambitious. [SPEAKER_06]: I can do lots of stuff. [SPEAKER_06]: So, I fulfill 20 desires. [SPEAKER_04]: But while I do that, I increase my desires to 40. [SPEAKER_04]: but still exactly where you are. [SPEAKER_06]: It's not getting better, guys. [SPEAKER_06]: It's not getting better. [SPEAKER_06]: We've got to figure out what makes it better. [SPEAKER_06]: So let's try the other way. [SPEAKER_06]: Suppose I had 10 desires. [SPEAKER_06]: I mean I full-filtained and I had 20. [SPEAKER_06]: And I left the 10 where they were. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, I had 10. [SPEAKER_06]: I keep it at 10. [SPEAKER_06]: But I reduced the denominator. [SPEAKER_04]: I make this 10. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I work on this further. [SPEAKER_06]: I keep this exactly where it is and I decrease this now and if I actually attain two self-realization, actually attain the spiritual goal, then what's my spiritual goal that I bring this to zero and now my happiness is, that's what this is. [SPEAKER_06]: The nice thing about Vedanta is that it's all quite simple. [SPEAKER_06]: All fits in beautifully. [SPEAKER_06]: That's what we know. [SPEAKER_06]: What is self-realization when we bring all desires to zero? [SPEAKER_06]: Man minus desires is equal to God. [SPEAKER_04]: God plus desires is equal to man. [SPEAKER_04]: Man means human. [SPEAKER_06]: What is the confusion about now what Vedanta does? [SPEAKER_06]: Is it helps you in two ways? [SPEAKER_06]: It helps you to fulfill more desires. [SPEAKER_06]: Why will you are reducing the denominator? [SPEAKER_06]: That is why Vedanta has said to give you clarity and pipe performance. [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, you must have all experienced this, right? [SPEAKER_06]: If you take up your spiritual sadhana well, you find you're doing better in the world. [SPEAKER_06]: You don't want it, you're getting it. [SPEAKER_06]: Others are craving for it, they don't want it. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a strange thing. [SPEAKER_06]: When you become a spiritual person, you become a loving person. [SPEAKER_06]: You're not asking anyone to love you, but people love you. [SPEAKER_06]: And those chasing people, trying to get their love, [SPEAKER_04]: The great sage Ramathir Thayyas to say, Stop chasing shadows. [SPEAKER_06]: Walk towards the sun. [SPEAKER_06]: Your shadow will walk behind you. [SPEAKER_06]: All the objects of the world will walk behind you. [SPEAKER_06]: You walk to the sun. [SPEAKER_06]: You walk to that eventual goal of self-realization of multi. [SPEAKER_06]: Everything else will come behind you. [SPEAKER_06]: Just imagine this, okay? [SPEAKER_06]: It is quite inspiring to be standing here today in the first society that Swami Vivekananda started, but if you just think about it, imagine it came here in the 1800s. [SPEAKER_04]: and yet all the wealth followed him. [SPEAKER_06]: Isn't it? [SPEAKER_06]: How did he build this? [SPEAKER_06]: He came here with nothing, he built this whole place, he built a worldwide organization, how? [SPEAKER_06]: He worked to his goal. [SPEAKER_06]: The shadows work behind. [SPEAKER_06]: And if you just emulate that, [SPEAKER_06]: We get everything, not only all them spiritual growth, but the so-called material bubbles are there and for whoever wishes. [SPEAKER_06]: For whenever they need, whenever they need it. [SPEAKER_06]: It's not that you want it, but if these tools help you create a better world for others. [SPEAKER_06]: Sorry, use them. [SPEAKER_06]: Imagine Mother Teresa, she came to India many, many years ago, from Europe, she just went to some Godforesaicum place, called India, you can imagine right that her family was saying, what's India, where's India? [SPEAKER_06]: No, what's Calcutta? [SPEAKER_06]: That's where, that's what people around are, must have said. [SPEAKER_06]: She went there with this goal. [SPEAKER_06]: I will feed the poorest of the poor. [SPEAKER_06]: Now feeding the poorest of the poor means what? [SPEAKER_06]: You need money to feed them. [SPEAKER_06]: We are all seeding our families, we know how much it costs. [SPEAKER_06]: Now she's going to feed thousands and thousands how. [SPEAKER_04]: She needs the money, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Walk towards your goal. [SPEAKER_04]: All this will walk behind you. [SPEAKER_06]: Don't be worried. [SPEAKER_06]: Say that, no, this is not for my personal welfare. [SPEAKER_06]: My welfare doesn't lie in this. [SPEAKER_06]: I'll walk towards my goal. [SPEAKER_06]: you find greater and greater happiness with them. [SPEAKER_06]: Then you don't need to do something in particular for happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: Happiness is always a byproduct. [SPEAKER_06]: When these start doing something, okay, I will sit in meditation today, so that I'll come down. [SPEAKER_06]: One work, I will go to the pub today, so that I come down. [SPEAKER_06]: One work means one work means you get a temporary solace, that's about it. [SPEAKER_06]: Whatever we do as tools for happiness, they won't work. [SPEAKER_04]: Because the law is... Law is... Hmm? [SPEAKER_06]: Come on now. [SPEAKER_06]: Don't say I couldn't hear anything at all. [SPEAKER_06]: Go towards your goal. [SPEAKER_06]: So what is the law? [SPEAKER_06]: Right, cessation of agitations, unless the desires come down, we are going to be an exactly the same position we always were in. [SPEAKER_06]: So another question with all us is, how do we reduce these to this? [SPEAKER_04]: The normal way that we talk about is is as spirituals are now what to we do. [SPEAKER_04]: Remove this, this is clear, right? [SPEAKER_06]: If you have any questions about this, we'll take this up in the end. [SPEAKER_06]: What do we do with our spiritual sadness? [SPEAKER_06]: Spiritual sadness? [SPEAKER_06]: The goal of spiritual sadness is [SPEAKER_04]: Self-realization. [SPEAKER_04]: Self-realization is equal to, hmm? [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, that's true. [SPEAKER_04]: Is equal to zero desire. [SPEAKER_06]: The whole spiritual sadness only meant to bring desires to zero. [SPEAKER_06]: So, how do we bring desires to zero? [SPEAKER_04]: There are three parts to it. [SPEAKER_04]: You're familiar with this, right? [SPEAKER_06]: Everyone here is a student of Iran, right? [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, so you're familiar with this? [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, maybe not the diagram, but the idea. [SPEAKER_06]: The three parts, two self-realization are Kalmiyoga, bhakti yoga, and I'm not using this correctly. [SPEAKER_06]: And Niana yoga. [SPEAKER_06]: When you do karmi yoga, bhakti yoga, nyanay yoga. [SPEAKER_06]: What is karmi yoga? [SPEAKER_06]: What is bhakti yoga? [SPEAKER_06]: What is nyanay yoga? [SPEAKER_06]: Karmi yoga means you're undertaking actions to reach the self. [SPEAKER_06]: These actions are actions of service. [SPEAKER_06]: Like I see everybody doing volunteer work, all of that. [SPEAKER_06]: These are actions that we undertake to reach the self. [SPEAKER_06]: when they undertake these actions, for any reason, other than the self, it becomes Karima Boga. [SPEAKER_06]: So we do a lot of service, but that's not reducing our desires, because the intake in that service and people will also tell you this, no, that makes me feel very calm, gives us a good community. [SPEAKER_06]: So many, so many reasons to know it. [SPEAKER_06]: But only when the intent is to reach the self does it become karma yoga. [SPEAKER_06]: Otherwise it's merely karma boga. [SPEAKER_06]: We do these things, we enjoy them. [SPEAKER_06]: And if you're very happy to do it. [SPEAKER_06]: So then people say, oh, but there's a dichotomy between spiritual life and material life. [SPEAKER_06]: When I come to the center, I'm so happy they're not going back home. [SPEAKER_06]: Karma yoga is not the work that you do. [SPEAKER_06]: is the ability to have the same sense of dedication, sacredness, worship, which we have in the center here in this geographical location, everywhere. [SPEAKER_06]: When we start feeling that same sense of sacredness, regardless of what we are doing, the washing dishes at home, [SPEAKER_06]: gardening, going to office, when we have that same sense of sacredness, that becomes karmi yoga. [SPEAKER_06]: Bhatti yoga is a sense of gratitude, so with us all the time. [SPEAKER_06]: Bhatti yoga is often understood to mean bhajans and, oh so it's so chanting in all that, but it's not restricted to that, that is a tool for bhatti yoga. [SPEAKER_06]: Bhatti is really gratitude. [SPEAKER_04]: love and surrender. [SPEAKER_06]: That sense that I have received so much which I am not able I will never be able to repeat. [SPEAKER_06]: The person in this world who is the most deprived has a chas got more than he is ever going to be able to repeat. [SPEAKER_04]: Think about it. [SPEAKER_04]: What are you receiving? [SPEAKER_04]: Right here, right now. [SPEAKER_04]: What are you receiving? [SPEAKER_04]: You say no, what am I receiving? [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know receiving anything. [SPEAKER_04]: Think about it. [SPEAKER_06]: If the law of gravity was not working, you would be bumping up there. [SPEAKER_06]: How would you listen to a Vedanta-like child if love-gravity didn't function? [SPEAKER_06]: Can you imagine? [SPEAKER_06]: I'm floating around, you're floating around, and some lecture is going on. [SPEAKER_06]: How can this work? [SPEAKER_04]: Have you not grateful for that love to that love-gravity? [SPEAKER_04]: Have you not grateful for atmospheric pressure? [SPEAKER_04]: How many things are operational before we can even say, [SPEAKER_06]: That sense of receipts is bhakti yoga. [SPEAKER_06]: Currently, our sense is always of deprivation. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't have, and don't have something. [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm chasing it. [SPEAKER_04]: Never a sense of, thank God. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank God all this is here. [SPEAKER_04]: And I would not be able to live without it. [SPEAKER_04]: Second thing in bhakti yoga. [SPEAKER_04]: is, excuse me, is surrender. [SPEAKER_06]: Surrender is our capacity, is the interlex capacity to recognize what I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm going to recognize that stuff filling around there. [SPEAKER_06]: Imagine, suppose I feel that this hall is small. [SPEAKER_06]: And I say, I can make this hall big, [SPEAKER_06]: What'll happen to the building if I just suddenly decide to knock a wall down? [SPEAKER_06]: Long coming, I'm down on me. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm not choking people actually do that. [SPEAKER_06]: It's a real story. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm man in Delhi decided that his living room was too small and he just knocked the wall off. [SPEAKER_06]: The whole thing was done. [SPEAKER_06]: This is called absence of surrender. [SPEAKER_06]: You don't know, you're using your head. [SPEAKER_06]: Why are you using your head when you don't know? [SPEAKER_06]: Either you know or you ask somebody who knows. [SPEAKER_06]: We'll study architecture and I must get an architect. [SPEAKER_06]: One of these two things I have to do. [SPEAKER_06]: So surrender is our ability to not go and interfere in areas of ignorance. [SPEAKER_06]: What is the biggest area of ignorance in my life is? [SPEAKER_06]: I really don't know what's good for me. [SPEAKER_06]: I really don't know. [SPEAKER_06]: Haven't I been through this in life? [SPEAKER_06]: Things are happened, I was very unhappy, they happened. [SPEAKER_06]: In a later point, I thought, oh, that's a good thing that happened. [SPEAKER_06]: Or something good had happened. [SPEAKER_06]: Isn't it? [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know what's good for me. [SPEAKER_06]: There's this very famous Zen story about the horse. [SPEAKER_06]: Have you heard the story about the horse? [SPEAKER_06]: Yes. [SPEAKER_06]: All of you? [SPEAKER_06]: No? [SPEAKER_04]: No? [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, please tell them. [SPEAKER_04]: You go ahead. [SPEAKER_06]: No, thank you, thank you. [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, you came, right? [SPEAKER_06]: That. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know why y'all are frightened. [SPEAKER_06]: These are nice people. [SPEAKER_06]: They're not going to eat you up or anything. [SPEAKER_06]: So far they've been good to me. [SPEAKER_06]: Nobody has started throwing tomatoes or something. [SPEAKER_06]: in the story. [SPEAKER_06]: Faith, fame, and Zen story, which goes, that there was a man. [SPEAKER_06]: He had a host, host wonderful horse in the kingdom. [SPEAKER_06]: And the king saw that horse and came to the Zen masters and said, give it to me. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm the king. [SPEAKER_06]: I should have that horse. [SPEAKER_06]: So the man said, no, I can't give you that horse. [SPEAKER_06]: He's like my son. [SPEAKER_06]: I brought him up. [SPEAKER_06]: So the king got the [SPEAKER_06]: So all the villagers came running to the Zen Master and said, oh my god, what a sad thing has happened. [SPEAKER_06]: Now the king is angry with you and you don't even have the horse. [SPEAKER_06]: So the Zen Master said, I don't know whether a good thing has happened or a bad thing has happened. [SPEAKER_06]: I know that the stable door is open and the horse is not there. [SPEAKER_06]: And next night, the horse came back with 12 more of its kind. [SPEAKER_06]: What a wonderful thing. [SPEAKER_06]: Now you have so many of these horses. [SPEAKER_06]: So Zen Master said, I don't know whether a good thing has happened or the bad thing has happened. [SPEAKER_06]: I know that 13 horses on the stable and then the son of the Zen Master started training the horses. [SPEAKER_06]: And he said unenbroke his leg and everybody came and said how he said your son is broken his leg. [SPEAKER_06]: So he said, I don't know whether a good thing has happened or a bad thing has happened. [SPEAKER_06]: I know my son is broken his leg. [SPEAKER_06]: That time as they were talking, all the kings, army, people started coming in and taking all the able-bodied men for war. [SPEAKER_06]: None of us know whether a good thing has happened or that thing has happened. [SPEAKER_06]: We just know the state of the door is open and the heart is not there. [SPEAKER_06]: Surrender is understanding that we don't understand. [SPEAKER_06]: We don't understand how this whole thing works. [SPEAKER_06]: Steve Jobs, you know, he said in one of his speeches that I was in a restaurant calligraphy. [SPEAKER_06]: So I just did it. [SPEAKER_06]: Apple products, that thing that he didn't calligraphy helped us get beautiful funds. [SPEAKER_06]: You don't know. [SPEAKER_06]: Stop behaving like you know, that's called surrender. [SPEAKER_06]: And the third aspect of devotion is love. [SPEAKER_06]: Universal affection. [SPEAKER_06]: What is devotion? [SPEAKER_06]: It is nothing but love applied to the higher. [SPEAKER_06]: When we love equals, we call it love. [SPEAKER_06]: When we love something higher, we call it devotion. [SPEAKER_06]: We devote it to our parents, we devote it to the country, we devote it to God, we love our spouses, our children, our pets, our furniture, devotion and love is the same on direction as the friend. [SPEAKER_06]: So, but the yoga is devotion. [SPEAKER_06]: Love of the Lord means love of His creation. [SPEAKER_06]: when a child brings you one of those silly things that all children since the beginning of humanity have drawn. [SPEAKER_06]: Every child, it knows, comes in our genes or what. [SPEAKER_06]: Every child will draw that, remember this? [SPEAKER_06]: They say, ah, put a son over there. [SPEAKER_06]: Every child seems to draw this as a child, and then they go to their grandparents and say, and the grandparents put it up on the fridge and they behave like this is because so is drawing over here. [SPEAKER_06]: Why do they love that drawing so much? [SPEAKER_04]: It's said, terrible drawing, really. [SPEAKER_04]: So why do they love it so much? [SPEAKER_04]: They love the creator of that drawing. [SPEAKER_05]: That's why that drawing is precious. [SPEAKER_06]: We love our creator, that's why this world is precious. [SPEAKER_06]: If you believe we created it, then how can you not love it? [SPEAKER_06]: that universality of affection is called love. [SPEAKER_06]: So what was karmi yoga? [SPEAKER_06]: The ability to be of service to work in cooperative endeavour. [SPEAKER_06]: What is bhakti yoga? [SPEAKER_04]: What is bhakti yoga? [SPEAKER_04]: Number one. [SPEAKER_04]: First one. [SPEAKER_04]: First one. [SPEAKER_04]: Graduate. [SPEAKER_04]: Second one. [SPEAKER_06]: Surrender. [SPEAKER_06]: Third one. [SPEAKER_06]: very nice. [SPEAKER_06]: See Vedanta, you actually have to work. [SPEAKER_06]: You have to listen. [SPEAKER_06]: You can't just get away with that. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, it feels so nice. [SPEAKER_06]: No feeling nice. [SPEAKER_06]: You better work over here. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay. [SPEAKER_06]: And then what is Nyanayoga? [SPEAKER_06]: As students of Vedanta, that's what we do. [SPEAKER_06]: We do Nyanayoga. [SPEAKER_06]: But what is Nyanayoga? [SPEAKER_06]: Are you Shankaracharya defined as the best definition of Nyanayoga? [SPEAKER_04]: Anyone's familiar? [SPEAKER_04]: Ah, like, um, knowledge of God and ignorance of not God. [SPEAKER_04]: Hmm. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if you're referring to actual definition. [SPEAKER_04]: What's his definition? [SPEAKER_04]: Hi. [SPEAKER_04]: Huh? [SPEAKER_04]: Well, that's a book he's written. [SPEAKER_04]: What is his definition? [SPEAKER_04]: What is Nyaniyoga? [SPEAKER_04]: What is knowledge? [SPEAKER_04]: Huh? [SPEAKER_04]: Go ahead. [SPEAKER_04]: Manifestation of the venity within us. [SPEAKER_04]: No, his definition of what is knowledge. [SPEAKER_04]: You're talking about the result of knowledge, but what is knowledge? [SPEAKER_04]: Removal of ignorance, correct? [SPEAKER_06]: That's also correct. [SPEAKER_04]: But his definition, yes? [SPEAKER_06]: Nithya Anithya Vivekavicharam, I'm sure you've been hard this thing. [SPEAKER_06]: Nithya, what is a Nithya Vastu? [SPEAKER_06]: What is the permanent Vastu? [SPEAKER_06]: What is the permanent thing? [SPEAKER_06]: Anithya, not permanent. [SPEAKER_06]: What is not permanent? [SPEAKER_06]: The Viveka, the discrimination on the difference between what is permanent and what is [SPEAKER_06]: So what is Neonayoga? [SPEAKER_06]: It is our capacity at all times to know what is the permanent thing you're and what is the impermanent thing you're? [SPEAKER_06]: I have a fight with my brother. [SPEAKER_06]: Is the fight permanent or is this relationship permanent? [SPEAKER_06]: You come to the centre. [SPEAKER_06]: Somebody doesn't greet you. [SPEAKER_06]: is that absence of greeting permanent or that the value is prevailing to your permanent. [SPEAKER_06]: Values for us to learn. [SPEAKER_06]: So, the constant discrimination that Vivekabukti, that tells us what is permanent and what is passing. [SPEAKER_06]: When we practice the three yogas, our level of desire comes down into what is known as operati. [SPEAKER_06]: operati. [SPEAKER_06]: Operati is when the mind is naturally withdrawn from the world. [SPEAKER_06]: Then we come to be able to do dharana, don't think I know how to use this. [SPEAKER_06]: I also familiar with dharana, [SPEAKER_06]: Barina is concentration. [SPEAKER_06]: When the level of desire comes down, we can concentrate. [SPEAKER_06]: What does concentration mean? [SPEAKER_06]: When the intellect is able to keep the mind on a field of thoughts, like what you're doing right now, at least hopefully doing right now. [SPEAKER_06]: When your intellect is keeping your mind on a field of thoughts, [SPEAKER_06]: When your intellect is capable of keeping your thoughts on one thought, that becomes Deanna. [SPEAKER_06]: And first we have to reach Oparati, then we learn to concentrate, then we can bring our thoughts to single-pointedness, and this finally is the gateway. [SPEAKER_06]: to the final truth, to the final happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: So what gives us the guarantee is that we go down this and reach this and that's your only guarantee you don't have any other guarantee. [SPEAKER_06]: If you have any other guarantee, please let me know. [SPEAKER_06]: I would love to learn. [SPEAKER_06]: but by logic, by experience, by the Brahmana, what we have been told is an authoritative source. [SPEAKER_06]: This is the only way to do it. [SPEAKER_06]: Do I sound fanatical? [SPEAKER_06]: How can I help it? [SPEAKER_06]: But this is the law. [SPEAKER_06]: What can I do? [SPEAKER_06]: I can't change it. [SPEAKER_06]: This is how it is. [SPEAKER_06]: Now what can we do when practically speaking is, we need to follow two principles in life. [SPEAKER_06]: But at all times we try to make our mind more pure and our intellect more sharp. [SPEAKER_06]: If we can do this consistently in life, we will find ourselves happy people. [SPEAKER_06]: That's just a practical application of the entire SADSMA. [SPEAKER_04]: So now you know, nothing's going to help you unless those desires come down. [SPEAKER_04]: And nothing can bring those desires down except, except. [SPEAKER_06]: Except, only one person can bring those down, and that is, yes, we ourselves, and that is why the Bhagavad-gita shri Krishna, the Lord tells us, come on, you all know this verse. [SPEAKER_06]: Only you can help yourself. [SPEAKER_06]: You have to raise yourself by yourself, that commitment to yours, anyone can do you any lecture, we can build up universities, we can build up centers, but these are just tools. [SPEAKER_06]: Each one will have to take that responsibility on their own selves, to make themselves the kind of person they would like to be, which means a happy person. [SPEAKER_04]: Are you going to help me do the summary? [SPEAKER_04]: What did we begin with? [UNKNOWN]: That's what is the, what guarantees us happiness. [UNKNOWN]: Like we have to say. [SPEAKER_04]: We have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have to say we have [SPEAKER_06]: this. [SPEAKER_06]: As long as there's a desire, you cannot be happy. [SPEAKER_06]: We are chasing an object because we believe that object will give us happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: But an object does not give us happiness. [SPEAKER_06]: No object is capable of giving us happiness because, because, don't be like that, then I failed this [SPEAKER_04]: But why can't the object give it to you? [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, but why can't the object give it to you? [SPEAKER_06]: Because it is not inherent in the object, very good. [SPEAKER_06]: Because it's not there in the object. [SPEAKER_06]: You can't go to a desert and say, I want water. [SPEAKER_06]: I want to get it. [SPEAKER_06]: all these objects are deserts and we're going to give me water and then getting irritated with them because they're not giving. [SPEAKER_06]: But there is no water, I will get it. [SPEAKER_06]: So correct that object cannot give it to you because it is not inherent in the object. [SPEAKER_06]: How do we know it's not inherent in the object? [SPEAKER_06]: Because that same object does not give happiness to all. [SPEAKER_06]: Fire gives heat to all. [SPEAKER_06]: True will give sweet. [SPEAKER_06]: Sweetness to all. [SPEAKER_06]: Does that object give happiness to all? [SPEAKER_06]: Does it even give it to the same person all times? [SPEAKER_06]: So it doesn't lie there. [SPEAKER_06]: Where does it lie? [SPEAKER_06]: Happiness is cessation of mental agitations. [SPEAKER_06]: Where are the agitations coming from? [SPEAKER_06]: Desires. [SPEAKER_06]: So when will you be happy? [SPEAKER_06]: when you come to see her designs. [SPEAKER_06]: And just incidentally, as the desire levels goes down, your voice access goes up. [SPEAKER_06]: Having just seeing people who've done miracles are people who are not really wanted anything themselves. [SPEAKER_06]: All those people, Jonah Fak, she fought the British, not because she wanted the power in position and lead the country. [SPEAKER_06]: She just wanted to serve her country. [SPEAKER_06]: That's why you remember her. [SPEAKER_06]: Vivekananda did not come here to make himself an empire. [SPEAKER_04]: That got added on. [SPEAKER_06]: Walk towards the sun. [SPEAKER_06]: The shadows will find us. [SPEAKER_06]: Don't worry about it. [SPEAKER_06]: If you're walking towards the sun, the shadow just follows you. [SPEAKER_04]: So what do we do? [SPEAKER_04]: What do we do? [SPEAKER_04]: Who please don't forget what we do? [SPEAKER_06]: That's important. [SPEAKER_06]: What is karmi yoga, bhakti yoga, nyan yoga, what is karmi yoga? [SPEAKER_04]: Action for a wider cause. [SPEAKER_04]: What is bhakti yoga? [SPEAKER_04]: One devotion. [SPEAKER_04]: What is nyan yoga? [SPEAKER_06]: Nithya, Nithya, Viveka, Vivecharam, please learn this most fabulous definition of, if you don't know Sanskrit, that leaves on this much. [SPEAKER_06]: Nithya, Nithya, Viveka, Vivecharam, say together, Nithya, Nithya, Viveka, Vivecharam, that Vivecharam, that thinking on the Vivekan, the discrimination between Nithya, eternal and unithya, not eternal, temporary passing. [SPEAKER_06]: When we do all this, we reach the state of operandi where the level of desires has come down considerably. [SPEAKER_06]: You have become a peaceful person. [SPEAKER_06]: You're not doing anything for peace. [SPEAKER_06]: You are peaceful. [SPEAKER_06]: In that state, we can learn to concentrate. [SPEAKER_06]: Once we've learned to concentrate, we can do meditation. [SPEAKER_06]: And meditation is the final gateway to self-realization. [SPEAKER_06]: The infinite happens. [SPEAKER_06]: What is the difference between Tharana and Deanna? [SPEAKER_06]: Very good. [SPEAKER_06]: Concentration means your intellect keeps your mind on a particular area. [SPEAKER_06]: Meditation means your intellect keeps your mind on one thought, like, oh, oh, just a thought. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, so once we learn concentration, only then we can do meditation. [SPEAKER_06]: We cannot do meditation to learn concentration and be done. [SPEAKER_06]: You can say, I will learn to shoot bull's eye so that I can shoot on the board. [SPEAKER_06]: You can be done like that. [SPEAKER_06]: It has to go in the traditional order, right, and then you reach. [SPEAKER_06]: That state that the sages have pointed out to us. [SPEAKER_06]: means, it's my responsibility, it's my commitment, and therefore the Lord says, says, help yourself by yourself. [SPEAKER_04]: For you alone are your friend, and you alone are your enemy. [SPEAKER_04]: Everything else is a tool. [SPEAKER_06]: So, like this is it for today, I invite you all to come to our campus nearby whenever you come to India next or make a special trip. [SPEAKER_06]: We have a PG diploma starting in June, a postgraduate diploma for systematic study and living that knowledge. [SPEAKER_06]: You don't want information, you have to be that person, you have all the information you need. [SPEAKER_06]: But how do you live the knowledge? [SPEAKER_06]: So that's why you're creating this so that go there, live it, get into the discipline one full year and hopefully we come out a changed person. [SPEAKER_06]: So that's it from me, if I'm happy to take any questions. [SPEAKER_06]: You had a question? [SPEAKER_06]: Who's that? [SPEAKER_06]: What was Daruna? [SPEAKER_06]: I forgot. [SPEAKER_06]: Concentration. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_06]: The word Daruna means concentration. [SPEAKER_05]: If you have a question, put your hand up and then I'm looking forward to my thank you. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, thank you for your lecture today. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it seems when we're trying to eliminate desires, when we have something happy or beneficial like a sunset or something like that, it's easy to receive it and move on. [SPEAKER_00]: But when you're going through something difficult like [SPEAKER_00]: physical pain in the body is very hard to remove the desire to want to get out of that pain or out of that situation. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I'm making clear the difference so sometimes it's easier to get rid of desires. [SPEAKER_00]: than others, especially if you're going through maybe a difficult situation at the moment. [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have any thoughts on one who would be going through a really difficult time in the immediate? [SPEAKER_04]: Well, firstly, it is not possible to remove desires. [SPEAKER_06]: No human being can remove a desire, it can be done. [SPEAKER_06]: What we can do is take up desires. [SPEAKER_06]: When we take up higher desire, the lower desire falls away. [SPEAKER_06]: So if you carefully understand this, you will understand why we have these three paths. [SPEAKER_06]: What is happening in Karma Yoga? [SPEAKER_06]: You're thinking about something higher, something noble, but the service for everybody. [SPEAKER_06]: That's why personal desires are falling. [SPEAKER_06]: In Bhakt Yoga, your thoughts are going to God. [SPEAKER_06]: So worldly desires are falling. [SPEAKER_06]: In Nyan Yoga, same thing, you're thinking what is permanent, what is not. [SPEAKER_06]: So, this adds for the empowerment of Ghanavay. [SPEAKER_06]: So you can't have a plucker desire and throw it out. [SPEAKER_06]: There was a story about this man who came to a sage and said, please help me. [SPEAKER_06]: I have a problem. [SPEAKER_06]: For some reason, in India, at least everybody believes you to go to the Swami, you go to the sage, and they're going to solve every problem you have. [SPEAKER_06]: So he went to the Swami and he said, please, please help me. [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm saying, okay, sure, what's your problem? [SPEAKER_06]: us. [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm going to say, I need your help. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, but what do you want me to do? [SPEAKER_06]: May I lock the door? [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, lock the door. [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm going to, one request, okay, but I say, what is your request? [SPEAKER_06]: That's so I'm going to, [SPEAKER_06]: My hair is falling. [SPEAKER_06]: Can you give me some more pie? [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure he said I'll give you a mantra. [SPEAKER_06]: You said this mantra every morning when you get upset 11 times. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, just say 11 times every morning, first thing in the morning, say it and your hair will grow back. [SPEAKER_06]: That's all, you know, that's all, just say it, go home and grow beautiful. [SPEAKER_06]: Lashes, hey, please everybody, I don't know this mantra, do not ask me. [SPEAKER_06]: No, it is, is that you say this mantra and it will grow. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay? [SPEAKER_04]: That's it? [SPEAKER_04]: That's it? [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_06]: That's fine. [SPEAKER_06]: And he was leaving. [SPEAKER_06]: So that's why I told him, see, this is a very powerful mantra, but if you lose all its power, is during chanting a mantra, you think of a monkey? [SPEAKER_06]: If you think of a monkey, the power goes away. [SPEAKER_06]: So no matter what he thought, I have many times he did the mantra, monkey. [SPEAKER_06]: So, what is it trying to tell us if you say I won't think of something, that thought really come? [SPEAKER_06]: So, you never say I don't think of it. [SPEAKER_06]: What do you do? [SPEAKER_06]: The things of something else. [SPEAKER_06]: So, that's, so you can't remove a desire. [SPEAKER_06]: You can only get higher desires. [SPEAKER_06]: This is just the base. [SPEAKER_06]: I haven't come to your question. [SPEAKER_06]: It's just correcting this idea that it's easy, it's not easy, it takes work. [SPEAKER_06]: Now, what to do when there is a bad batch? [SPEAKER_06]: Most important thing is to recognize this is a bad phase. [SPEAKER_06]: This is not my life. [SPEAKER_06]: Right? [SPEAKER_06]: I went through good patches. [SPEAKER_06]: I will go through bad patches. [SPEAKER_06]: In the future, there will be good patches, and there will be bad patches. [SPEAKER_06]: This is just life. [SPEAKER_06]: I stand like a general take salute, you know? [SPEAKER_06]: General take salute? [SPEAKER_06]: The battalions are going by. [SPEAKER_06]: One of those battalions may have his own sun deck, does he do? [SPEAKER_06]: It doesn't wave, no, to that sun. [SPEAKER_06]: Just continues to stand there, regardless of who's going in that battalion. [SPEAKER_06]: So once we, that's when Yani Yoga comes, I recognize Anittya Vastu. [SPEAKER_06]: this bad phasor anittavastha. [SPEAKER_06]: The only question in front of me is what should I be doing now? [SPEAKER_06]: Like, I'm not well. [SPEAKER_06]: I'm in hospital. [SPEAKER_06]: What should I be doing now? [SPEAKER_06]: I have to follow the instructions of the doctor. [SPEAKER_06]: I have to keep my mind peaceful. [SPEAKER_06]: I have to do whatever this that I have to do after do my physiotherapy or whatever in the world I have to do. [SPEAKER_06]: What do I have to do now? [SPEAKER_06]: My entire being has to be focused at any point. [SPEAKER_06]: What do I have to do now? [SPEAKER_06]: Regardless of whether it's a good time or a bad one. [SPEAKER_06]: Some people lose it in good times. [SPEAKER_06]: Some people lose it in bad times. [SPEAKER_06]: Our entire focus is what am I to do now? [SPEAKER_06]: Now what will come out of this? [SPEAKER_06]: What happened at the previous lecture? [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, in that lecture, those people said this, that in future lectures, this is going to happen, that is, at this moment, the only thing that has to exist is this lecture and what I'm supposed to do now. [SPEAKER_06]: So that way, we take our minds away from results, from good, bad. [SPEAKER_06]: Why are you thinking good, bad? [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know whether it's good or bad. [SPEAKER_06]: So what do I have to do now? [SPEAKER_06]: That's the only question I have in front of me at any time in life. [SPEAKER_02]: Namaste Jan Kishi and thank you very much for your initiative for the Vedanta University and all the work that you do. [SPEAKER_02]: I was just curious if you can please share the inspiration behind starting a university like this and particularly of interest to me why a place like Mumbai. [SPEAKER_06]: Well, why stop the university because we are standing at a crisis. [SPEAKER_06]: There are wars going on for heaven's sake. [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, has humanity not even learned this much so far? [SPEAKER_06]: Like, like, what's wrong with us? [SPEAKER_06]: There are wars going on. [SPEAKER_06]: There is climate change going on. [SPEAKER_06]: We stand at a crisis. [SPEAKER_06]: Nobody can get along with anybody. [SPEAKER_06]: Everybody's fighting with everybody. [SPEAKER_06]: If you have no work life balance, if you are escaping, you say, okay, how do I have work life balance? [SPEAKER_06]: I will not take your email after 7 or 8. [SPEAKER_06]: And then we get very rigid about that. [SPEAKER_06]: And call it balance? [SPEAKER_06]: How did rigidity become balance? [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, so it's so weird things are going on. [SPEAKER_06]: Our health is going down. [SPEAKER_06]: Each one of us are getting lifestyle ailments. [SPEAKER_06]: And nobody's asking the question, what should I teach my children, so that they don't get lifestyle ailments? [SPEAKER_06]: It's crazy, it's like lunacy. [SPEAKER_06]: So if you think about it, Swami, Chen Mananda is a beautiful dog on it, it says that there would be no problem in this world if human beings go into you, you're saying you are doing something to protect the environment, no you're not. [SPEAKER_06]: You're doing it to protect yourself, the environment takes care of itself. [SPEAKER_06]: Now, what are you talking about? [SPEAKER_06]: Who are you trying to conserve the tiger? [SPEAKER_06]: We only need to conserve the tiger. [SPEAKER_06]: You stop killing it. [SPEAKER_06]: It will be conserved on its own. [SPEAKER_06]: You know, the problem is generated by us. [SPEAKER_06]: So, we can not enter education system. [SPEAKER_06]: put it so that the children, the new generations, will do it properly. [SPEAKER_06]: They are developed into visuals, like how we heard off in India, they were. [SPEAKER_06]: In India, we had the, we were the wealthiest country, not for a short 2,300 period, for thousands of years. [SPEAKER_06]: And then we were looted and looted and looted. [SPEAKER_06]: And at the time of independence, 1947, do you know what was the exchange rate, [SPEAKER_06]: Now you have a one one rupee to $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 [SPEAKER_06]: We were also the most loving country, the most peaceful country. [SPEAKER_06]: You know, I don't know if you were in India in school where we studied, that all these Chinese scholars, different people came to our country and wrote about how they found the most loving people. [SPEAKER_06]: We had it all, but why did we have it all? [SPEAKER_06]: Because our education system was like that. [SPEAKER_06]: Every kid learned it. [SPEAKER_06]: and not even, they didn't even insist on everybody learning it. [SPEAKER_06]: A small section learned it, the country's state fine. [SPEAKER_06]: It's amazing, just a few people knowing this, this whole world will stay fine. [SPEAKER_06]: Because everybody cannot study this, few people will study it, but if they study it, we'll take care of the world. [SPEAKER_06]: So, it's touched the inspiration, what's the inspiration that none of us know how to live. [SPEAKER_06]: We are messing up a wonderful world, we are messing up our wonderful lives. [SPEAKER_06]: If we can put this back on track, we'll be blessed to have this opportunity. [SPEAKER_04]: So that's why, by near Mumbai, because I'm in Mumbai. [SPEAKER_01]: Namaskar Janki, thank you so much for this lecture. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, kind of picking up from the last question, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And that happens in the life as well, that you set goals for yourself, for your kids, spouse and all that. [SPEAKER_01]: The moment you set goals, you get into the planning, the moment you get into planning, your desires come out, right? [SPEAKER_01]: So going to the whole philosophy of no desires, conceptually, all of us here, within this lens, we get it. [SPEAKER_01]: We know it. [SPEAKER_01]: But in a day-to-day life, it just becomes impossible, whether it's because of office, kids, desires. [SPEAKER_01]: That's really not an easy thing to do, right? [SPEAKER_01]: And anything that you want to say on that. [SPEAKER_06]: The way to not have desires is by planning. [SPEAKER_06]: It's because we are not planning that we inculcate desires. [SPEAKER_06]: So when we say don't have desires, it means don't have craving one thing. [SPEAKER_06]: Desiring. [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know what one's to use. [SPEAKER_06]: So every human being is capable, has talks. [SPEAKER_06]: These talks are divided in Vedanta as minus the mind and buddhi, the intellect. [SPEAKER_06]: Minus is our irrational side. [SPEAKER_06]: Our likes and dislikes, our rins and fancies, our emotions, love, anger, greed, hate, jealousy. [SPEAKER_06]: All of this is the mind. [SPEAKER_06]: Intellect is bhakti, reason, judgment, discrimination, all this is bhakti. [SPEAKER_06]: So when the mind is longing, wanting something, you create a desire. [SPEAKER_06]: You pick up that same thought and put it in the bhakti. [SPEAKER_06]: It becomes a goal and aim and ambition. [SPEAKER_06]: So this aim or ambition is very different from a desire. [SPEAKER_06]: And then you won't mind, and then one said, it goes on, it's endless. [SPEAKER_06]: But ambition is a very different thing. [SPEAKER_06]: You have a target to be reached. [SPEAKER_06]: Come and add into it. [SPEAKER_06]: That is it. [SPEAKER_06]: When you plan your life properly, you think in terms of what is my life, your four. [SPEAKER_06]: And based on that, you plan for the next, I mean, however many years you have left, if you're 20 for the next 80 years, let us say, if you're 50 then for the next 50 years, whatever it is, think of that. [SPEAKER_06]: What is that goal that my life is here to achieve? [SPEAKER_06]: What's my purpose? [SPEAKER_06]: And then work backwards. [SPEAKER_06]: If in 50 years I have to achieve this, and in 25 years I have to do this, and in 10 years I have to do this, [SPEAKER_06]: this month, this week, today, therefore now I'm doing this. [SPEAKER_06]: So, this kind of planning is what helps keep the desires under control, desiring increases desires, planning brings them down, because now you're focused. [SPEAKER_06]: You know, the best you can do is have the highest [SPEAKER_06]: plan, like I'm going to reach self-realization. [SPEAKER_06]: If that's not possible, then self-development. [SPEAKER_06]: If that's not possible, a higher purpose, something for the welfare of all. [SPEAKER_06]: If that's also not possible, then at least a person will go, because a goal is better than a desire. [SPEAKER_08]: Thank you so much, and the difference between Darana and Diana you mentioned that Darana is focusing on this area, while Diana is focusing on a specific thought or point. [SPEAKER_08]: Can you explain more what should be that specificity in Diana? [SPEAKER_06]: can be anything. [SPEAKER_06]: You can say om, you can say shiva, you can say Vishnu, you can say Christ, you can say sky, you can say chair, it doesn't matter. [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, home that's important is that it's one thought. [SPEAKER_06]: It doesn't matter what that thought is. [SPEAKER_06]: Are you familiar with the story of Eklavia? [SPEAKER_06]: Ekelevia was a forest prince, a sort of prince of a tribal thing, and his whole focus and life was to become an acho. [SPEAKER_06]: That's all he thought about. [SPEAKER_06]: He went to Guru Dronacharya and said, teach me, actually. [SPEAKER_06]: So, dronacharya said, I can't teach you, I am teaching the prince, I cannot teach you. [SPEAKER_06]: So, what he did is, he made a idol of his guru, dronacharya, placed it on front of him and started practicing. [SPEAKER_06]: And practiced and practiced and taught himself so much, he became the world's best archer. [SPEAKER_06]: He was supposedly better than Arjuna. [SPEAKER_06]: So, who is this? [SPEAKER_06]: How is somebody better than a drinker? [SPEAKER_06]: A drinker is supposed to be the best. [SPEAKER_06]: So, Guru Dronacharya goes to find out, who is this person? [SPEAKER_06]: And he sees Eklavya. [SPEAKER_06]: And the star, Eklavya, buzzed on to me on my Guru. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you for teaching me. [SPEAKER_06]: I haven't taught you anything. [SPEAKER_06]: No, you're my Guru. [SPEAKER_06]: Because of you, I have learned this. [SPEAKER_06]: Okay? [SPEAKER_06]: Then if I'm your Guru, give me Guru Thakshina. [SPEAKER_06]: And the story goes, he says, yes, of course, I'll give you whatever you ask for. [SPEAKER_06]: So the guru asks that he gives his thumb. [SPEAKER_06]: I understand what that means, right? [SPEAKER_06]: He can't pull it anymore. [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, for the thumb, so, actually he's gone. [SPEAKER_06]: So this is a highly highly criticized incident in the Mahabharata. [SPEAKER_06]: Let's see, this is how they look down on the outcast. [SPEAKER_06]: Well, that's so many things they say. [SPEAKER_06]: Because they really look at it from their own perspective. [SPEAKER_06]: Not incorrect. [SPEAKER_06]: You shouldn't look down on people. [SPEAKER_06]: But what is the show? [SPEAKER_06]: that any thought can bring you to single-pointedness. [SPEAKER_06]: In the case of Eccolabia, it was just actually. [SPEAKER_06]: That's all you could see. [SPEAKER_06]: That's why it was so good at it. [SPEAKER_06]: And the role of a guru is always to take you to socialisation. [SPEAKER_06]: So when he asks for the thumb, he's asked for his archery. [SPEAKER_06]: That means [SPEAKER_03]: you have given us a wonderful taste and great insight into what this university is and on behalf of the Vedantic Society of New York, we wish you love and great success because something like this really deserves it. [SPEAKER_03]: So thank you so much. [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
