It has to start somewhere. It has to start some time. What better place than here? What better time than now?
You're listening to the latest Radcast News update. Here's Ryan and Riley. Hey guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast. It's our weekly news segment here on a Friday New Year's Day.
January 1st. That's like my best woohoo. That was so good. I'm so glad we're recording this. I'm going to have to use that on one.
Yeah, January 1st. Hey, happy New Year's. It's not quite New Year's for us recording it just so you know, but you're listening to us. It is New Year's Day.
Yes. As we want to wish you a happy New Year's. Yes, we want to wish you a very happy New Year's. And it just happens to be.
 Episode 100.
I was not as good as yours. I know. Cheers. We're having champagne for listening. Just imagining us like sipping on some 1972 fine champagne.
 Yeah, exactly.
It might not be 72. Just the absolute best champagne you could possibly hope for is what's happening here. That's obviously no, but
there's a little apricot there. A little. No, but.
A little citrusy. Happy New Year's to everyone. Hope it's a great one for everyone. And yeah, it's also our 100th episode obviously and that's super exciting.
So yeah, that's. I know. 100 episodes. It's it's believable because I've you know, when I was reflecting on this, I was like,
it's felt like I'm saying, I remember the, you know, guests and it's been two plus years.
Obviously, we've picked up the frequency here in the last six months. It's probably come on and you know,
put a rule like schedule together. You know, we're pretty loose there the first year or so. So it's picked up, but it's felt like, you know,
we were getting towards 100 to this. I've started to get like go like I think about the guests and then I run out of like,
I got to look back at home. Yeah, that's right. Like it was on and how many went when it was.
Exactly. It's crazy. When you go back through episodes and just kind of pay attention to who's who's on what and what episode it was. And you're like,
that was 30 episodes ago. It's like crazy to just really think about. But speaking of that, like who's been your favorite guests or not favorite guests.
That's a bad thing to say. Easy. Yeah. That was a bad thing to say. I don't mean like that. But like, I feel like we had amazing guests this year.
And obviously absolutely incredible guests all the way around. But you know, was there any like one just like right on top of the head that like completely stood out for you?
Well, you know, a couple things stood out. Like I was really proud of the quality of the eSports series as a whole.
Yeah. I mean, that stands out as a highlight. I'll name a few of those shortly. But, you know, again, I guess call it selfishly or whatever.
But someone that was just on my radar because I've been following what he's doing to Sean Whalen and having him on from line is not sheep.
And Sean's kind of a polarizing figure out there right now because he's got some very strong beliefs. And, you know, like I'm love,
and I hate him. You have to respect, you know, kind of his transparency and the way he goes about it and the success of his business here in the middle of COVID.
He's like crushing. He's done like over a million dollars and revenue.
 That's awesome. Nothing relevant.
And, you know, that stands out from a personal side of just someone that I, you know, that I'm following and watching what he's doing.
And kind of, you know, I don't, it's something even that I agree with every position he has, but, you know, respect his transparency and his way of kind of sharing information.
And so great communicator. And so that stands out. But then the commerce series was just, I think, you know, solid.
You know, like from Matt Arden at the NBA and the NBA 2.2 K game all the way through.
You know, the, it just felt like, you know, our most cohesive. I mean, it was the first time kind of doing a series for us.
And it just felt like it, like each episode kind of added on to each other.
 Oh, yeah.
The whole thing, you know, stood out as really reflecting the growth that he sports has seen not only this year, but in, you know, how it's just booming in the last 10 years.
Absolutely. No, I mean, same with me. I feel like there's obviously every guest, you know, interacted with on some level.
And it was just the, I loved who we had on. I mean, for me, I'm thinking of, you know, in the e-commerce series specifically,
I'm thinking of like Alex Reed and Jordan Schindler and, like, Bella Wright, like, they were incredible guests and just the passion and just the, like, the goal-oriented people.
I mean, it was just like, I loved that and I felt very inspirational. And so those episodes haven't been listened to.
You should definitely go back and listen to them because they're incredible. Really every episode in the credible.
 And obviously we're biased.
 Yeah.
This is like our podcast, but like, you know, it's just like one of this thing. I mean, they were incredible.
And, you know, back to the e-sport series too, you know, definitely just think of, like, you know, Charles Conroy and especially Magnus.
Like, they were all like, and just the insight was awesome.
And I, and, you know, what's interesting is, you know, we're two minutes into talking about the best of the years, some of our favorites.
Best of it is just so wrong.
 It is, yeah.
I think it's just the nature of this time of year.
They get best of it, all that.
 Yeah.
But reflecting on things, and we haven't even mentioned, like one of the pre-imminent voices in B2B marketing Dave Gerhard.
 Exactly.
I mean, you know, we thought for three minutes and even get it, Dave, that's just the, that just goes to show the quality of the, of the guests that we've had.
 Yeah.
And kind of all of that and Dave was great.
And, you know, even the most recent, like one of the most recent Jan Parrish, you know, that was like, you know, sometimes you, I'm proud of all the guests we've had.
I can't think of an episode where I was like, man, this didn't enjoy it or like it wasn't good.
 I mean, I'm biased.
 Right, right, right.
 Being the host.
But, you know, sometimes you jive, and you get into a flow more.
And, you know, Jan and I, I think, you know, could relate to each other, both in and marketing a long time.
I could really relate to her ups.
You could relate it to me.
 Right.
But just her story, her background, and kind of the way she's building a business the right way, with Glow.
 Right.
 Which is really cool.
 No, it is.
 It is.
And yeah, and then the other thing that I guess happened this year on the Radcast side is Ron Pandora.
And I know we announced that last week, but I feel like it's important to, you know, emphasize again.
So if you are listening on Pandora, that's super awesome.
 And welcome Pandora listeners.
That's super exciting for you to be here.
Yeah, no, they're pretty selective with, you know, it's not like one of those things where you can just put the podcast out and you're immediately on.
You know, like most of the channels, you know, if you put one together and you release it, you can start pushing out to a lot of the platforms where Pandora is pretty selective and goes through a process and approval and all that.
So, you know, at least we're going to tell ourselves that.
 Right.
 They do.
You have to kind of apply and they vet you a little bit.
 Yeah.
 No, it's cool.
 It's exciting.
I know they've got a little listener following.
And so if you're listening on Pandora, welcome for sure.
 Exactly.
 Yeah.
 No, it's super cool.
 New years plans.
I know that we're, if you're listening, you're, you're hearing us talk about New Year's plans and it's New Year's day for you.
But nonetheless, you can hear what we did last night.
 Correct.
 Yeah.
 Think about it that way.
This is weird to like, I'm saying like what's supposed to happen.
Not knowing if it's actually going to happen yet.
This is like that weird, like a mystic ball kind of moment, you know.
But no, what's supposed to happen.
Actually, one of my really good friends that I went to West Virginia University with, she's coming down with her boyfriend.
And we're all going to kind of go out and I'm just kind of, but like cautiously.
Because like, I'm not, I'm not trying to like be super like crazy.
It's COVID and I'm just trying to be respectful, you know.
So I think we're just going to do something at my apartment.
Obviously all the party games, but see the thing is is like, if you do it at an apartment, then you can really just kind of do your own kind of party.
Like, however, you want it to go and it's like, we can just basically have the bar at my apartment.
Do you know what I mean?
And like, it's very convenient to drink when you want it.
Not at the weight of the bar.
 Yeah, exactly.
And just like games and, you know, I'm a big card game person.
So, you know, I have all my card games ready and I'm just, I'm very excited.
So that's kind of what's supposed to happen.
So I guess we'll see what actually does happen.
 Oh, yeah.
I'll never forget the Christmas party.
 Riley's pulling out.
I've got to the point where we're like, all right.
 Let's play a game.
 I have cards.
 I always carry them.
 Yeah, I do.
It might be a card shark.
 I know.
 I know.
 I know.
Get a game of Rummy here.
Would you like to play Blackjack?
 You know?
 You never know.
What kind of name is that?
We have playing horse racing or whatever the game is called.
 Exactly.
 Exactly.
Yeah, I think it's called horse race.
 Horse race.
I think it's called horse race.
 No, it's a good game.
 It's pretty fun.
We played that last Christmas party till we hours in the morning.
 Nice.
This was a little more calm this year.
 Yeah.
 It was a fun game.
 Yeah, super fun.
 What about you?
 What are your supposed plans?
 You know, we're low-key.
You would have all the boys.
 Oh, okay.
And we're actually going to go for part of the night to my father-in-law.
His birthday is technically this week, you know, yesterday.
 Oh.
 Happy birthday.
 And so, yeah.
 Happy birthday to Steve.
So we're going to celebrate him some part of the night.
And I don't know if wind up just staying there.
Or headed back to Chateau, offered for that party.
 For that party, admittedly.
And, you know, it's New Year's is kind of hit or miss.
 Look, if there's a party in like, let's pre-COVID, post-COVID, all that,
 you know, we're in.
So my advice is somewhere we don't have plans or we've got a sitter or something.
 I'm all for.
I'm not whole, you know, home bug, you know, about partying.
 Right.
New Year's is a little bit amateur hour-ish for me, with just like, really?
Well, it's just everybody that just doesn't go out much is out.
 But I get that.
You know, who do I want to, you know, spend my time around?
 I like private parties.
 I get that.
You know, 10, 12 of your best friends hanging out somewhere great.
 Exactly.
You know, or even like a nice, if you have reservations somewhere at a nice dinner
 in a private room.
And then maybe going, you know, somewhere for, you know, the celebration.
And so, but this year, ironically, last year, I think, Nicole and I were going to,
like, look like old Fogies here.
But I think we were in bed by, like, 11.
We woke up and, you know, did the New Year's kiss the next morning.
 That's so funny.
 You're like, yeah.
 I mean, you're funny.
But I forget what we had had going on, but like, we were worn out.
I don't think I'm going to make it because we didn't have friends doing anything last year.
And we weren't having made plans and we had the kids.
And so, it was just like, I don't know.
 That's hilarious.
 Yeah.
 And this year.
 So, some family stuff.
It seems appropriate for the year for us.
 Right.
 For us.
You know, if I was 20, something like you.
 I know.
 I know.
 I wouldn't be saying that.
But being 40 something, it feels appropriate this year.
And we do have some plans, like New Year's Day and Clemson's plan.
New Year's Day with the college well playoff.
You have the good teams playing that.
 And, uh.
 And, uh.
 And, uh.
 And, uh.
 And, uh.
 So.
 I know.
 I mean, I know.
I think West Virginia was playing.
I think your game was canceled.
 I think or something.
 Um, because of COVID.
 Because of COVID.
 Just because of COVID.
 Exactly.
That's what happens to the holiday care bowl and you, uh.
 Or whatever bowl it was.
 Car care bowl.
 You know, citrus bowl.
 Cheese it bowl.
 Whatever it was.
 Yeah.
 It's funny, though.
 There is some irony.
Like, and I'm giving Riley a hard time.
 She's a West Virginia fan.
West Virginia is better than most teams.
 Uh.
So there's nothing to be ashamed of there.
But what's funny is all these.
It's like you don't want to think there's conspiracy or like.
It's about the money when we know it is.
 Right.
 Interesting enough.
There's like half the bowl games have been canceled.
You know, because of COVID and all this stuff.
 Right.
But some tell me these playoff games won't be canceled.
 What do you think?
 Somehow.
 No, those games won't.
We'll go down the big one.
 The big money maker games.
 100%.
 We'll go down somehow.
 And so it's like.
 How come?
You know, you know, I don't not want the closest game.
 I need this.
 I need sports.
 Like, it's okay.
Just bundle the money in as long as it happens.
I want everyone to be safe.
 But I need this game.
So I'm not complaining about it.
But it's just ironic that the irony that it just so happens.
 It just so happens.
These other bowls get canceled because of this.
And then the biggest games that make the most money.
 Somehow everyone stays safe.
 It's magic.
 It's magic.
 It's magic.
 It's something in the water.
 I'm sure.
 I'm sure it's some magic.
And they're probably taking maybe more precautions because they're, you know, the younger
kids like that are going to the potato chip bowl.
Our problem might not be as focused as the playoff theme.
 Right.
So I could take, I could accept that argument.
 Yeah.
 Yeah.
 You know, who knows.
 It's okay.
 It's funny nonetheless.
 Yeah.
So happy New Year's to everyone, officially.
 Happy New Year's everyone.
 Absolutely.
 Episode 100.
 And we appreciate everyone listening.
 Yes.
You know, I guess we'll get to.
 Here's probably what the news.
 Cool.
 Here is the Radcast News.
 Okay.
So news for today is really just going over what ironically now we are seeing with the
 best of 2020.
 The best of 2020.
But I think this is just our takeaway.
At least from like the Radcast perspective and just, you know, what was notable for other,
you know, news, outlet sources of what was just the best of 2020 advertising wise.
I mean, for me right off the top of my head, I'm going comedy because 2020 as we've said
 was such a shit show.
Let's just go to the comedia.
You know, I mean, obviously the sin news campaign is first on my lit.
Like that just cracks me up even though it was canceled shortly afterwards.
 That's just hysterical to me.
 So funny.
And then, you know, we have another one.
The calm and CNN partnership that happened right during the election, which I think is absolutely
hilarious, which, you know, we all know why that was kind of happening.
It's so funny to me to calm because those commercials, I don't know like they spend a ton on like the little bit of
living or TV that I catch here and there.
I feel like I see a calm 30-second spot and it's like laying on the screen coming in.
And like, you know, I'm like, they must be making some money on this app, you know?
 Yeah.
 I don't know.
 It's been stressful.
 Yeah.
It has been a lot of people buying that app.
And obviously with election and all the tension that's come with both sides, no matter where you fall,
you have to admit it's been tense, to say the least.
So a great brand play is cool.
 Cool ad.
 Very, very time appropriate.
 Yeah.
 And so, yeah, it's cool.
 I like it.
And have you ever used the app?
 I use the...
 I think I don't have a free version.
I use the free version, to be honest.
 I use the free version.
But it was one of the things where it's just, I liked the...
 I think actually really cool.
It was a very intentional time to just meditate.
 Are you a meditator?
 No.
I think we should talk about that.
 Okay.
I do not have New Year's resolution.
I'm not a New Year's resolution kind of guy.
 Okay.
 I'm self-motivated.
 I kind of...
 I'm the anti-New Year's guy because I just think it's arbitrary.
And following my social media, you're going to see some posts the next few days.
You're doing pretty hard to get into about this.
But I do think that one of my goals for next year or just goals in general,
whether it's next year or tomorrow or the next day,
is I do feel like I need to meditate.
I think I need like, just with everything going on,
I think I reasonably am a calm person.
But sometimes I feel like I get more intense about certain things
and I think I need to like meditate.
I'm feeling the need, so I might check out the column.
I don't know whatever it is.
And I don't even know if I'm capable of going my brain works.
 I have no problem sleeping.
 I'm a good sleeper.
I fall asleep in like two seconds.
It's not that, but I think whether it's in the middle of the morning
or whenever you out would meditate,
I'm not sure my brain is going to...
I'm going to have to really work at this.
I don't know how that's going to go down.
I think my natural inclination would be to fall asleep.
Because I'm an easy sleeper and I feel like,
and I could literally, if we shut up all the lights here in our studio,
you gave me like, you know, just using this chair,
 all the lights off.
 With the champagne.
A couple of slips of that champagne.
I could be to sleep in three minutes.
 From right now.
 Oh, wait.
Give me three minutes, lights off, no distractions,
like no, Ed, like, and let me sit here.
I would be in quasi rims, not rims sleep,
 but some sort of...
I, the offers can go to sleep very quickly.
 My dad didn't do this.
 My sister's the same way.
 It's crazy.
 We can sleep quickly.
So this takes me to a couple of things that are going through my head.
So first of all, if you've seen the movie Eat, Pray Love,
which is that's like one of my favorite movies.
I don't know if you have.
It's a Julia Roberts movie totally would recommend it.
It's probably one that is going to be like a Nicole.
Like, Nicole would probably really like out.
And if you're really going to like it,
it's definitely one of those chick-butt kind of deals.
 But anyway, in the...
 Yeah.
 In the movie.
It's a no for me, dog.
 Yes.
Well, in the movie, like, she goes to...
She goes to Bali because she's trying to like work on like the prayer aspect of her life
 or whatever.
And everyone's trying to get her to meditate, whatever.
 Or no, she's...
 I don't...
Actually, it might not be the Bali part of the movie.
But regardless, she's trying to meditate.
And it cracks me up because I just feel like this...
This will go into a personal story in a second.
But it's like, she's sitting there and she's like...
She's like, you know, trying to meditate.
 She's like trying...
 She has her hands out.
You know how you're supposed to have your hand out.
She's like trying to do this.
 And she's like, it's in.
And she's like thinking about how to decorate her meditating studio at home.
You know, and she looks at the clock and it's been a minute.
And she's like, oh my gosh, you know.
But it's like, for me, when I first started meditating,
it was kind of a similar thing of like, okay, time is just like not my friend right now.
Like, my mind's a million different places.
But like, I feel like people get into, okay, if I meditate, I have to do this.
And then it becomes this anxiety thing of, you know, I'm not meditating now.
 No, I'm not meditating.
 It's like, pause.
 Chill, chill, chill.
 Just focus on your breath.
Like, that's the first part of meditating.
 It's just your breath.
So like, if you focus on your breath and you do that intentionally for like five minutes a day,
you can build up from that to really focus on complete meditation
of just like where your mind's at, other thoughts, controlling thoughts, things like that.
But you have to start somewhere.
It's like, you know, Rome was a built in a day.
You have to start somewhere and start with your breath, you know.
 I'm willing to try.
And I feel like I need to try.
Not because, you know, I'm not, I have very low pressure.
Like, even like my most stressful moments, it's more of my personality than I feel like, like, stress.
I think we can find out I don't have any stress tests in like a couple of months.
I just, my doctor recommended it.
 But I don't know.
Like, I feel like I'm going to fall asleep.
I feel like if I try to do it, but I want to try.
So it is on my, my goals.
I'm not going to call it a New Year's resolution.
 Right, right, right.
 But the intentionality is there.
 And I think that's what's important.
 Intent, yes.
 Yeah.
 Yeah.
 Yeah.
 Exactly.
 Yeah.
But was there another one that kind of set out to you this year?
Like, add wise that you were kind of like, oh my gosh.
 Yeah.
I mean, we talked and, you know, we've got a few of our show notes or cheat sheets, so to speak.
But I saw it again on TV for the first time.
 My animals.
 Yeah.
 They're pretty religious.
So I was like almost like feeling a little weird with them, seeing it.
Because you got this big huge Satan or whatever.
 Right.
But that match.com Satan spot from Ryan Reynolds, production company is just hilarious.
 No, that was awesome.
2020, you know, if you haven't seen it and you didn't listen to our, we talked about this.
I think a couple of months ago.
 Yeah.
 Hounds running together.
It was, yeah, it was a couple weeks ago.
 It was crazy.
Like, because this just came out and it was like the, it was the thing where I'm playing
 it too.
If you're on the YouTube video, you'll be able to see it.
But the video is, it came out a couple weeks ago because it was right around, there was
something that had happened and it was like right around that time period.
But yeah, it was just a couple weeks ago.
But Satan matches with a girl that is personifying 2020.
 Because hi, I'm 2020.
And so they were a match made in heaven or hell or what do you know?
I guess it's definitely a match made in hell.
But it was just when I got very insightful from match and how it's hard been very different.
 I can only mad.
I'm like, thinking of myself, you know, we all live in our own world.
You know, like as much as you like, try to empathize and know these things.
But, and Riley, you can speak this and then you have a boyfriend now.
The idea or thought of trying to date in the middle of COVID.
 You're telling me.
I hadn't really thought about it to like that spot.
Like, you know, this probably has been pretty fucking difficult.
 It's been crazy difficult.
I mean, like again, like we did long distance like in the middle of COVID.
Like, um, it was like horrible.
 Like it was like terrible.
Yeah, you want to get on the plane and.
 Yeah, exactly.
Like there's all this added, you know, whatever to it.
But, you know, I thought it was very insightful from match.
You know, I just thought this was hilarious.
You had to watch the extended version.
Because some of that, some of the comedy I think plays out more in the extended version.
 Absolutely.
The WTF in the end zone.
 It's like on the lawn.
Like having a picnic or whatever's hilarious.
 It is.
There's just a lot of little subtle.
Like there's some of it's very obvious humor.
But then some of us subtle.
You have to kind of look forward.
 So, right.
 Really one of my favorites.
 Yeah.
Another ad that kind of stood out for me was the wapper one.
 Yeah.
 The moldy wapper.
This disgusting looking thing that, you know, honestly, it just, it makes you think.
And it makes you appreciate like the goodness of Burger King, right?
 I think.
 I don't know.
I talked highly of Burger King on.
 Yeah, you did.
So this week, the value meal and the nugget still blows my mind.
How many nuggets you can get from like five bucks.
 But anyway.
But the moldy wapper, like I thought it was like, I understood and appreciate, you know,
being in the creative business for 20 years.
Like, I appreciated the creativity and the thought behind it.
I just still was like, sometimes because you can, should you endure?
 You're really selling more burgers.
 I know it's transparency.
But I still know that you're talking about 2021 trend.
Is that really getting people excited about going to buy a wapper?
Like just because it's going to, you know, mold properly because it's not what she's
 at the last foot forever.
 Right, right, right.
 Yeah.
 It's kind of gross.
But I like to think that she's at some twinkies.
Like never, you know, disintegrate or whatever.
Twinkies like, supposedly like 20 years, you can, I guess you could eat it.
I'm sure it doesn't taste as fresh, but like, it doesn't do anything.
 It's really no degradation.
I'm just going to stick to my habit.
 Here at lunchtime.
 Exactly.
 Yeah, exactly.
Still, I appreciated the creativity and I appreciated the transparency as a marketing
 person.
But as a consumer, I had my doubts whether or not it helped them sell anymore burgers.
 Right.
They're still, you know, someone in their analytics, I can tell us if that worked out for them.
 Right, right, right.
