Taking our mind through the shopping malls of the world around us, Swamiji clearly illustrates how in the peaceful mind of one who has given up strong likes and dislikes, the seeds of their vasanas get completely roasted!

Obsessive desire for anything constitutes lust. Lust when obstructed leads to anger, and this anger deludes us, causing us to lose our ability to discriminate between what is real and unreal. Swamiji illustrates this through an anecdote in the Ramayana, driving home the clear ways in which our desire for the world outside carries us swiftly down the ladder of fall!

The mind is easily coloured by sense pleasures and the intellect often justifies indulgence, but Krishna explains how an intellect dedicated to a higher goal can lovingly inspire the mind to master, and not just suppress, the senses. Swamiji also introduces Krishna’s famous ‘ladder of fall’ to help us understand how the uncontrolled mind leads us further away from our ultimate goal!

How much can one abstain from all the temptations of the world?

When we stay away from the temptations, they eventually turn away from us too. However, Krishna reminds us that the memory of the pleasures continues to tempt even the most intelligent of us! Having withdrawn the senses, the mind must be alert, vigilant and directed into deeper contemplation of the Truth.

Krishna paints this delicate word-picture of a person of perfection on the canvas of Arjuna’s mind. He even anticipates Arjuna’s queries and begins to eliminate them! How can one so easily withdraw from the world? In today’s episode, Swamiji eloquently explains Krishna’s beautiful metaphor comparing the tortoise and the sthitaprajna!

Swamiji clearly points out how our raga (attachment), leads to bhaya (fear) and krodha (anger), and the stithaprajna is free from them. Their mind is not dependent on any outer object, hence the level of detachment which they operate from.

The person of perfection also sees beyond ‘good’ and ‘bad’, neither complains nor praises, and is ever fixed in knowledge of Brahman in all as all.

With a variety of tales, Swamiji explains the self-satisfied nature of one who is equanimous.

We hear of the sthithaprajna’s unshakeable mental attitude towards joys and sorrows, who accepts all that falls in their lap as the Lord’s grace, and has no fear, attachment or anger towards the world and people around them.

Having heard of this state of ease, Arjuna is curious to understand such a person of perfection. To the untrained ear, his questions may seem childish, but Krishna understands these prattling questions from His student and begins by speaking of the knowledge the sthitaprajna is rooted in.

Moksha is not freedom from action but freedom in action. When we intelligently let go of attachment to the results of actions, we gain freedom from bondage of birth and de ath. Swamiji breaks down the psychology of our attachment to the fruits of our efforts despite the suffering that we inflict on ourselves by that very attachment, and how we can reach our original state of ease.

The benefit of the Geeta is to be experienced here and now. With amusing anecdotes, Swamiji clarifies how we can act in love and dedication. A restless mind leads to an inefficient intellect, leading to nothing but more suffering! Doing our best and accepting the fruits of our action as the just results, regardless of whether it is what we desire or not, ensures a balanced mind. As we gain spiritual knowledge, many paths and many goals appear to be taught over the ages. How to know which will lead us to our goal? In Karma Kand, if we don’t complete actions in the proper order, despite our efforts, we may not benefit from it and even gain the opposite of our desired outcome! Working with the right attitude, the right Buddhi, can help us gain knowledge of the Truth.

Using a charming anecdote with Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, Swamiji illustrates our folly in understanding what Paapa or Sin is. Arjuna running away would not only bring him infamy, but it would allow anyone and everyone to criticise his power. Krishna further explains that regardless of whether he slays or is slain in battle, Arjuna only stands to gain by fighting, as is his duty! Arjuna is stuck viewing the war from his emotional lens, thinking what would happen to his reputation if he won against his family. Krishna comes down to his level and reminds him that with fame, responsibility to maintain the capability that brought fame arises!

Swamiji explains that when we don’t live up to the fame gained from performing our duty, we incur sin by moving away from our swadharma.

The entire Geeta Marathon by Swami Swaroopananda can be caught at https://clix.chinmayamission.com/product/geeta-marathon/

Swamiji illustrates how one’s swadharma expresses itself no matter what with a humorous anecdote with Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. If we don’t express our own swadharma, we cannot work with efficiency and a sense of fulfilment. Swamiji illustrates that the texture of the water will determine the quality of the reflection of the Sun reflected in it. When we decide to clear the water, we add a purifier to it, and when we aim to purify our mind, we must add inspiration from the Higher into our minds.

The Atma in discussion remains a wonder to all, be one a scholar or a dullard. Even more wonderful is the Master who can explain to us what words fall short of describing! With His characteristic examples, Swamiji explains how the subtleness of the Atma and Jiva can be understood.

Continuing these important verses of the Geeta, Krishna reiterates to Arjuna that there is no need to grieve. Birth and death is inevitable to the body but O Arjuna, realise that the relatives you grieve for are not the body but the eternal, unchangeable, imperishable Atma (Self).

All our experiences, happy or sad, have a beginning and an end. But the more we complain about what we cannot change, the more the sorrow and pain magnify!

When the mind is disturbed by sorrow, we brood over the change and become more easily influenced by future fluctuations. In forbearing the changes in the world outside, we can gradually come to identify with the changeless within us.

To comfort Arjuna’s grief, Krishna reveals the truth of how there never was a time when any of us did not exist. Gayatri Mantra Day 8: The meaning of Om

25 min

The 3 vyāhrtis Bhūh, Bhuvaḥ and Svaḥ, prefix the Gāyatrī Mantra, which Ādi Śaṅkararacharya tells us indicate the nature of the Truth. Oṃ, with which the Mantra begins, is the subtlest of all symbols for, and is the closest indicator of that same Truth. Swamiji gives us further insight into Oṃ, distilled from the vast knowledge of the Upaniṣads.

In this episode, we hear from Swami Swaroopananda about Ādi Śaṅkararacharya’s commentary on the Gāyatrī Mantra, which tells us that the Gāyatrī Mantra reveals the truth about the relationship between the Jivatma and Paramatma. Swamiji breaks down the meaning of each word of the Mantra, taking us deeper in contemplation on the divine Gāyatrī Mantra!

The Gāyatrī Mantra illustrates the brilliant values and qualities the Sun embodies, and gives an ideal to aspire to. Swamiji shines a light on how regular Japa (chanting) of the Gāyatrī Mantra leads us to develop a calm, concentrated, devoted mind, in which all noble values can be cultivated. As our practice of Gāyatrī Japa deepens, our intelligence gains clarity and our knowledge deepens.

Swami Swaroopananda goes further into the profound significance of the Upanayana Samskara and the inspiration it provides us with. Swamiji gives us a brief definition of the Gāyatrī Mantra and the inner significance of a Vedic tale told at the time of the receiving the Gāyatrī Mantra - blending tradition with science in his characteristic storytelling style!

Intelligence is not purely genetic, it is something that can be invoked and cultivated. Swami Swaroopananada talks about the tradition of the Upanayana Samskara, its significance and how the initiation into the Gayatri Mantra was given in childhood. This tradition facilitated the development of the intellect and prepared students for the highest knowledge - something we can still aspire to today!

Dive deeper into the science of the Gayatri Mantra is to understand how by chanting this Mantra properly, our mental impurities are removed and our mind can be attuned to the vibrations of eternal knowledge and power in the universe. Swamiji explains how the Gāyatrī Mantra reveals to us Dharma, the means to reach the Ultimate Goal, the Infinite, Eternal Bliss!

When faced with the challenges thrown at us by the world, our minds can be our greatest asset or a cause of sorrow. To help strengthen and purify the mind, the ancient Rishis (seers) gave us the Gāyatrī Mantra, found in the Vedas. Swami Swaroopananda gives us the background into the origins and deep significance of this popular mantra. Swamiji clearly articulates how we can use it to tune the mind so that the mysteries and the powers of the universe are revealed to us.

Arjuna continues to justify his pacifism, telling Krishna that by killing a whole generation of men, the Vedic culture would be lost for future generations to follow. He even goes on to say he would rather the Kauravas kill him unarmed! Swami Swaroopananda talks about how Arjuna’s words have become today’s reality and reminds us to rise and take back our cultural heritage and pride.

The family unit ensured that family traditions were passed down through the generations. As time goes by, we see this unit gradually decline, leading to great loss in cultural values. Drawing on real life situations, ranging from the collapse of the traditional joint family, to intercultural marriages, Swamiji shows us how the Geeta can help reconcile today’s generation gap.

When we want to escape a situation we have to justify our own minds/our desires, to make it seem like we are much greater than we actually are. Arjuna’s first argument against fighting is the breakdown of the family unit. Using modern society’s example, Swami Swaroopananda shows us how this argument has manifested itself today in the form of failing welfare systems and national debts!

The entire Geeta Marathon by Swami Swaroopananda can be caught at https://clix.chinmayamission.com/product/geeta-marathon/

Arjuna’s identification with the Kauravas as his family blinds him from seeing that his real duty lies in ensuring Dharma is upheld no matter what. He misquotes the scriptures to try and justify his misplaced compassion. Swamiji reminds us that punishment is for correction, not revenge, and knowing our duties clearly prevents us from getting carried away by our attachments.

In moments of mental weakness, the bigger picture gets distorted as we zoom into our personal gains or losses in a situation. We even start to deny our true intentions, attempting to appear compassionate.

When the mind is overwhelmed by emotion, the body too may not be able to function properly. A cloudy mind is unable to see clearly any long-term benefit, and justifies weakness with superficial nobility. Swamiji summarises Krishna’s Powerful Instructions in this final talk. This series of talks have summarised the entirety of the Bhagawad Gita, guiding us in a practical and clear manner on how to strive to achieve that Infinite bliss. Reminding us that desire, lust, anger and greed are sure ways to suffering, Swamiji guides us on how to free ourselves from this bondage, through surrendering to the Lord and gaining knowledge. The knowledge we gain from the shastras will allow us to determine what is right and wrong. When we live life according to this scriptures, we become fit for the highest Truth. It is abidance in this Truth, that will lead us to Infinite bliss, to eternal happiness.

Often we experience difficulty reaching our goals. This practical talks shows us the means to integrate our minds and intellect, a key method by which we can achieve success. Our mind, because it is full of desires and distractions, often deters us from reaching our goals. However, when the mind and intellect are integrated and remain focused on the Truth, we recognise that we can achieve anything because we are not limited, but we are part of the Infinite. To bring about this integration, we need to focus on positive values and work on removing our pride, ignorance and ego. When all our actions are devoted to the Lord, the ego is dropped and integration can take place. With an integrated mind and intellect, anything is achievable!

Why worry? Shri Krishna reminds us time and time again that for His devotees there is no reason to worry. His devotees shall never perish. How do we keep reminding ourselves that we are always protected? Swamiji reminds us that even those who have committed multiple sins, when they turn their mind to the Divine, they are transformed. When that person experiences a sense of Oneness with the Lord, they experience eternal peace. Once one has surrendered completely to God, there is nothing to worry about.

As our mind, so is our experience of the world. As our mind, so our thoughts, our actions and our results. The entire world we experience is through the mind, so if our mind is miserable, everything appears miserable. Then how do we master this mind? Swamiji guides us clearly on developing a single pointed, meditative mind that can achieve magnificence. When our thoughts are scattered our energy is dissipated. Instead, if one’s thoughts are directed towards a Higher goal and focused on the Lord, revelling in positive thinking, one can manifest greatness.

Happiness is our true nature, our birth right yet why are we always searching for it? Swamiji takes us through a logical explanation, showing us how due to ignorance, we keep searching for happiness externally. When we do this, we often experience lust, anger, greed and as a result we deprive ourselves of peace and balance. Krishna’s Powerful Instructions in this talk demonstrates how best to manage anger and greed. Emphasis is placed on the need to calm our minds and discriminate between right and wrong. Most importantly, we are empowered to take control of our own happiness; as Shri Krishna clearly says “lift yourself by yourself” and make your mind one that is conducive to achieving happiness.

When a student is attuned to her Guru, even a spark of knowledge can lead to realisation of the Self. What qualities are needed to become a fit student? An attitude of humility, an enquiring mind and a willingness to serve are all prerequisites to gaining knowledge. This knowledge must come from a Guru. One that is versed in the science of this knowledge, who lives this knowledge, not merely one who has knowledge from books. This knowledge resulting in equanimity of mind, gives us the ability to perform our duties and stand up to challenges in life.

In our eternal quest for happiness, we look to objects to fulfil us. Yet, these temporary moments of joy we experience do not provide long term satisfaction. How do we rid ourselves of these struggles which only provide short term gains? Swamiji clearly articulates how we should remain in a sattvic frame of mind; by ensuring all actions are done as an offering to the Lord. With this attitude, we are not fixated on the result of the action. The moment we are fixated on the result of any particular action, it breeds in us anxiety. Instead, Krishna’s Powerful Instruction reminds us to act with an attitude of service and love, resulting in all our actions becoming inspiration and efficient. This is meditation in action!

How do we deal with the situations that life constantly throws at us? Krishna’s Powerful Instruction tells us to change what we can and have the strength and forbearance to deal with what we can’t change. With this simple but empowering instruction, we are given the tools to deal with any situation that arises. Keeping the attitude that this too shall pass away, no situation is too much to bear. As a result of this forbearance and strength, one experiences less sorrow and more joy, something we are eternally looking for!

Swami Swaroopananda starts this powerful series of talks by sharing the secret of happiness, which has been unfolded in the Upanishads. The first of Krishna’s Powerful Instructions reminds one that the choice to be happy is in our control. Despite the mind being full of emotions, anxieties and fears,  Shri Krishna calls on us to choose happiness and not give in to despondency. Swamiji shares practical instructions on how to face life and awaken the ability in us to achieve greatness.

Just like peeling back the layers of a flower, if one can slowly peel back all the layers, the Atman will be revealed. The body, mind and intellect are covering it yet with self effort, through detachment and discrimination one can uncover this Truth and revel in bliss. Any being who strives to live like Nachiketa can also achieve and realise this Truth.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

At the start of a spiritual seeker’s journey, desires have to be given up with will and effort. For the realised person, the desires leave him without effort. When a seeker is prepared and the knowledge takes place, the bliss that remains removes all desires. Kathopanishad instructs one to cut the knots of the heart. When these knots of ignorance, desires, actions are cut, this seeker realises he is immortal. When ignorance is removed, everything else drops away and immortality remains!

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Having heard the means of knowledge, listen to Swami Tejomayananda expand on meditation. Meditation is withdrawal of the mind and turning the mind’s attention towards itself. When the senses, mind and intellect become still, the mind is not wishing for anything, the senses are not perceiving and the intellect is not judging. It is not the same as deep sleep! It is a conscious withdrawal. Once a person has seen this Truth, the knowledge is never lost. That person can continue to function in the world but ignorance is no longer. Faith is integral to this process. Faith in the knowledge, the Guru and existence of Truth.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Although the Atman is unknown to us now, is it unknowable? Can we experience it via our senses or through perception? The Atman does not fall within the range of our sense perception. Kathopanishad shares the method of gaining this knowledge; listening, reflecting and then meditating. The student needs a purified mind and to have gained knowledge from a Guru. When a qualified student approaches the teacher, the Guru gives the knowledge. That is called Shravanam. Once we have heard, Mananam or reflection is required to  slowly reduce the mind’s attention from external objects to the internal. And finally, meditation.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

One lives as though life will last forever. Yet we have no idea when we will face death. Knowing this, one should focus on gaining knowledge in this life and not wait until the next! Even if the efforts do not lead to realisation, the results of our efforts will lead to a purified mind and gaining knowledge. Devotion to the Guru is a perfect way by which to purify the mind. Don’t wait. Do it now. Here and now – this is the best place, best time to purify the mind. Just like a clean mirror shows shining reflections, a purified mind allows one to clearly realise the Truth.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

The whole world, the forces of nature, our bodies, they all function in harmony with the laws of nature. By seeing the effects of the laws of nature, we are led back to the cause.  Samsaara is likened to the tree which can be cut down, through developing vairagya and viveka. This Samsaara we experience is only there because of our ignorance of our true nature. Once we see that there is a cause behind every effect, we see that it is Ishvara who is the cause behind everything.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Swami Tejomayananda states clearly that there should be no doubt about whether one can experience this Truth. Instead of asking “can I experience this?”, ask how can I experience it. Try to understand this Truth instead of simply thinking “I don’t understand”. By knowing It, does one find fulfilment in life.

Dialogue with Death #40: Everlasting peace

30 min
Open

What is the result of gaining knowledge of the Self? That person experiences abiding, everlasting bliss. Regularly, we get what we want and we experience some short term peace. Yet the peace and bliss gained from knowledge is everlasting. The more we look for this peace externally, the more we struggle and the more we are keeping ourselves separate from it.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

How to explain the nature of this Atmatattva (essential nature of the Self)? Swami Tejomayananda gives a number of vivid examples to remind us that this Atman is everywhere. It is not energy, it is consciousness which manifests as life. Air does not have any particular shape, it takes the form of its containers. For example, when you blow a balloon, you breathe in air which is transferred to the balloon and then back to space when the balloon bursts. Just like this, the Atman is the same in all of us and is expressed as many because of the many Jivas and upadhis that exist. Again the Rishis remind us to wake up to the one alone that is appearing as many, that One is what you are.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Nachiketa wanted to hear more. What happens after death? The body becomes one with the elements yet what happens to the jiva? With self effort, we can impact this jiva’s journey. Kathopanishad points out that it is so very rare to get a human body, with a desire for spiritual knowledge. This wonderful life is because of all the past work we have done. Difficulties in life will always exist but do not brood over problems. If everything is always good, you never understand the totality of life. Everything is a learning opportunity. Abide in noble qualities; noble thoughts, devotion and knowledge. We can always beautify, sanctify and improve. We must count our blessings!

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

How do we know that the Self is separate from the body? Kathopanishad clarifies that man does not live purely because he breathes. Instead, Swami Tejomayananda elaborates on what causes bodies to function.  In every body, there is an individual jiva. When the jiva leaves the body, what remains? The functions of the body stop. This implies that there is something other than the body that causes it to function. The physical, physiological and senses work only because they are enlivened by Him, clarifying that the Atmatattva is separate from the body.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Why do I continue to feel bound if this Atman (the Self) is liberated? Even though the Atman is free, since I do not know it, I feel I am bound. However a precious thing you may have, the joy is only in knowing its preciousness. If I have a diamond ring, the joy is not there if I do not know it is a diamond. Similarly if I do not know myself, there is no joy. Once I realise the Self, there is only bliss.

Kathopanishad shares that the same consciousness that is there today will be there tomorrow. This consciousness does not change and is one and the same everywhere. Yet, we are unable to see this oneness. Instead we see differences, which in turn cause likes and dislikes, indifference or love, meaning we experience a range of emotions. Once we see past these differences, the experience will be one of only joy. The joy we think is true joy, it just isn’t.

Dialogue with Death #34: Playing a Role

29 min
Open

There is an actor in a play. The actor knows he is playing a role. If he starts to identify fully with the role he is playing, he will lose sight of who he really is. Similarly, Swami Tejomayananda reminds us that we too are playing a role and shouldn’t lose sight of who we are. Once we understand that this Chaitanya in Its pure form is in the body, is the same Chaitanya that is present everywhere, we need not go searching elsewhere. Instead, this Truth can be experienced through a purified, cultured, disciplined mind, which has remained close to a Guru. One has to put in a certain amount of effort and then let the magic happen!

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Kathopanishad shares that there are two types of people; one is action oriented and one is knowledge oriented. For example, in the spiritual field, there are those who are interested in rituals and those who are interested in enquiry, in the nature of the truth. Just like the pujari keeps the fire alive, the knowledge of the seeker should be kept alive. This inner lamp of knowledge should not be put out. Kathopanishad reminds us to be alert.

Swami Tejomayananda reminds us of one of the most powerful outcomes of understanding this Truth; we become fearless. As long as one identifies with the body, mind and intellect, one remains in fear of numerous things, health, wealth, loss of power etc. Yet the cause of fear is ignorance and wrong notions. When a person enquires and recognises his true nature the cause of fear is removed. Once we recognise that our true nature is infinite, we are freed.

Can an inert object know another inert object? Can the body, senses or mind know themselves? Kathopanishad sheds light on the true Knower. The Chaitanya which is unborn and imperishable, that alone is the illuminator. We only know a table is a table as a result of a thought. It is only when my thought goes to something that I know it exists. It is the Chaitanya that powers that thought, that allows us to see in a dream and in the dark.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

What are the obstacles to gaining this knowledge? Through our senses, we see only the outside world and not our true selves. Our mind continues to become more and more extroverted. Yet, one can overcome this obstacle and use his senses to guide his mind towards the Self. When we see something, think, who is the Seer? Who is the one doing the seeing, hearing, thinking? The mind can be used to enquire about the true nature of the Self, to look inwards instead of outwards.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

In this talk Swami Tejomayananda reflects back on what Nachiketa has learnt from Lord Death to date. Through listening, reflection and meditation on this knowledge, the one who realises that Brahman as his own self attains greatness. He realises he is Ananda, goes beyond joys and sorrows. Any man who realises this Truth becomes great, most revered and worshipped. But the wise person is not bothered by this at all.

Swami Tejomayananda reiterates the urgency of this quest, reminding us not to waste our time. Every moment is an opportunity to turn towards Self knowledge. This knowledge will take us beyond pairs of opposites, beyond joys and sorrows. Now is the time to arise, awake and take action to wake up from this sleep in which we are suffering. This knowledge is the subtlest of the subtle and so not easy to gain but this knowledge must be known because the fulfilment of life is the result.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

How often should we meditate? Twenty four hours a day! How do we achieve this practice of constant meditation? This talk expounds on practical meditation; how do we do this? How do we withdraw our attention from our senses and slowly turn our attention within, from the individual I to the Totality. We are reminded by the great saints that even if this process is difficult, like walking on a razor’s edge, the results are more than worth the effort.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Although the Upanishads, logic and the Guru all say you are the Self, we can't accept this. And although no one tells us we are the body we readily accept we are the body. This is the power of Maya! To know our true self we need a purified mind, clarity of knowledge and the grace of a Guru. By focusing our minds on what our hands are doing, we gain single pointedness which in turn leads to subtlety of intellect which enables meditation which leads to recognition of the Atman

Dialogue with Death #25: Part of the whole

29 min
Open

How do we move from the subtle to the subtlest? Our physical body first appears in subtle form but before that it exists in unmanifest form, just like a tree is in unmanifest form in a seed, and butter is in its unmanifest form in milk. Similarly, before the total mind was manifest, it was unmanifest. By peeling back these layers, we are moving towards our Self. What we call our individual mind cannot exist without the total mind. The individual jiva cannot exist without Mahan Atma (Totality, Ishvara, God). Know that you are part of the totality, that without it, nothing is possible.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Swami Tejomayananda dives into the Kathopanishad as it highlights That which is higher, subtler, more pervasive and most intimate. Subtlety is measured by the greater pervasiveness of one factor over the other. Listen in as Swamiji logically leads us to that which is the most subtle, taking us on our inner journey.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

The human body is the gateway to liberation making it our greatest asset. We unfortunately turn it into our greatest liability! Identifying with the body, mind, senses and intellect, we mistake our true identity to be that of an individual limited being. We create bondages for ourselves by developing the wrong relationships with these equipment. Kathopanishad heeds us to not make our assets, our liabilities.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Kathopanishad uses the metaphor of the chariot to explain our relationship with the True Self. For this inner journey, our chariot is the body, in which the in-dwelling 'jiva' is the master, intellect the charioteer, mind the reins, senses the horses and the sense objects the road. Swami Tejomayananda cautions us that for safety, the charioteer should remain on the path of devotion, right thinking and faith, avoiding the dangers lurking in the by-lanes of compromise.

Shadow has no independent existence of its own. It exists only with reference to the light. Using this analogy, Kathopanishad elaborates how the jiva (the false ‘I’ ego) is the shadow and Paramata (the true Self) is the light. Seeing the jiva, we therefore know that Paramata is. Only ignorance keeps our true Self far from us, when in fact it is so close.

Just as one does not lose sight of the destination despite the traffic and hurdles that are encountered while travelling, Swami Tejomayananda warns us of the impediments in the journey of our Self discovery; bad conduct, sensual indulgence, lack of concentration and impatience to reach the goal. Develop clarity of thought and purity of mind to reach our own Self.

The subjective experience of the Atman - our True Self - cannot be gained by merely listening to discourses. One's study and reflection of the scriptures must be soaked in the intensity of faith. To the spiritual aspirant, who wants nothing else and diligently seeks the Atman, the Atman reveals Itself.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

To realise the Self as it is, without the conditionings of Body, Mind, and Intellect, one has to become free of desires. Swami Tejomanyananda shares how one can become free from desires, emphasising the need to develop purity of mind and control of the senses. The glory of knowing our true Self is that one is permanently released from sorrows, anxiety and stress.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Swami Tejomayananda elaborates on the essence of Atman (the Self) as being beyond sins and merits. Who is the doer of actions? Who experiences the results of the actions? To whom accrues the sins and merits? The Atman cannot be the doer, enjoyer or prompter of any action. Kathopanishad reveals that when a person is awakened to one’s true nature, one is no longer bound by action and can be free from sorrows forever.

Swami Tejomayananda comforts us to not be disheartened! Through objective introspection, each individual can come to know that which is blocking the flow of Knowledge in you.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

The Knowledge of the Self is a wonder on its own; from its nature to how the Guru communicates it to the disciple. Only a Guru who knows the Truth can make us understand something that is beyond the faculty of our understanding and perception. Rare indeed are also the students who come to understand and experience the subtle ideas in their true essence.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

At each moment, man has the freedom to either follow the path of Shreyas; wherein lies our absolute good as it frees us from bondage permanently or the path of Preyas; wherein we gain only temporary gratification of the senses and material prosperity. Nachiketa remains unmoved, knowing that the nature of all objects and pleasures is temporary. Thus, he becomes even more determined to seek the third boon from Lord Death.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

Swami Tejomayananda expounds on the next few verses of the Kathopanishad where Lord Death tests the calibre of Nachiketa to determine if he is fit to receive the Knowledge. Despite the attempts by Lord Death to dissuade Nachiketa from seeking the Knowledge, Nachiketa remains relentlessly firm in his resolve. He knows that only with the grace of the Guru, is it possible to gain the Knowledge of the Infinite Truth.

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChinmayaChannel/

After deep introspection, Nachiketa has come to know that the transcendental question of “Is there an existence after death?”, is not one that can be grasped by the mind or the intellect. Nachiketa therefore poses the question to the Lord of Death as only a Master who has realised the Truth, is able to reveal that Truth, which cannot be otherwise known by direct perception or inference.

In love, there is a natural acceptance. Swami Swaroopananda reminds us to see the One Truth in everyone. Wherever the differences arise, we need to shift our attention to that Oneness, for all are manifestations of that Reality alone. Don't even waste a fraction of second on desire, anger, greed and delusion; the toxins that take us away from experiencing our true blissful Self.
Our mind fuelled by likes and dislikes continues to create distinctions and differences. We judge some as friends and others as foes. Bhaja Govindam instructs us to seek that One Infinite Truth and Reality, beyond the names and the forms. Come to experience that in you and in me, is the same Truth, the One Consciousness that pervades the entire universe.
Exhausted by the vicious cycle of life and death; always seeking desires and pleasures from the world and yet never finding that permanent happiness, the seeker in despair turns to the Lord. In that complete surrender of the ego, one comes to realise the Infinite Self. Swami Swaroopananda implores us to seek that Lord. With Sincerity. Here and Now.
Death for the body is certain. It teaches us to enquire into how many of our actions are temporary resulting in only temporary results. Swami Swaroopananda shares the secrets by which we can no longer fear death, including the study of the Bhagavad Gita. The Gita teaches us about ourselves, our immortal nature by which we can free ourselves from our limiting beliefs and ego.
Bhaja Govindam sings the praise of the Man of Perfection, who free from all desires and cravings from the world, revels in the bliss of one’s own Self. Such a person whether in meditation or in the midst of pleasures, in a crowd or in solitude, is ever basking in the realisation - I am that Bliss, unconditioned by the circumstances of life.
Everyone is seeking happiness and yet no one seems to attain permanent everlasting happiness. Swami Swaroopananda diagnoses the problem to identify that our minds are constantly restless in the false expectations of happiness from objects, beings and situations. Breaking free from these dependencies, we can come to enjoy the effortless peace and happiness. That is our true nature.

Life is constantly passing us by and yet we waste our days in vain actions. Bhaja Govindam warns us that within a fraction of a second, everything built on our false identity and ego can be wiped away. Swami Swaroopananda reminds us of the importance of being present NOW, to delve deeper into that which is permanent instead of spending our time on that which is frivolous and ever changing.
Ignorant of our true identity, we conjure up the world in our minds with our likes and dislikes, chasing happiness from the ever-changing world. Swami Swaroopananda in this Bhaja Govindam talk, assures us nothing of this illusion can affect us when we come to realize that I am that Permanent Reality, against which the differences are seen. Have confidence in the power that lies within, that which is our very own nature.
We easily start behaving and thinking like the company of people that we keep. To continue our enquiry until it becomes our belief pattern and guides all our actions, Bhaja Govindam encourages us to seek the company of the good and wise people who are attached to the Truth. Attaching to nobler thoughts allows us to detach from that which is harmful for us.
