Enjoy this special presentation from the first ever Whinypaluza Ultimate Marriage & Parenting Summit!

Laura Froyen received her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) with an emphasis in Couple and Family Therapy from Michigan State University in 2014. While pursuing her doctorate she worked as a Couple and Family Therapist in the state of Michigan helping families navigate difficult times. Her research focused on how marital and family relationships influence parenting and child development. She continued this research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Assistant Professor of HDFS and UW-Extension as an Early Childhood and Parenting Specialist.

She helps individuals, partners, and co-parents become the parents they are longing to be. She helps overwhelmed and disconnected parents reconnect with themselves, each other, and their children. She helps parents bring ease, calm and JOY back into their hectic and chaotic lives. She helps parents stop yelling and start feeling confident in themselves. She does this through her unique approach to parenting that is grounded in research and driven by the overarching goal of restoring balance and compassion to families.

Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Laura Froyen about how everyday life gives us moments to shine light on our wounds that still need healing, creating opportunities for repair and growth.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • There is no such thing as perfection, only “good enough.” There is a cycle of mistake/repair that creates growth.
  • Acknowledge your triggers, and use them for growth, until they are no longer triggers.
  • What are the different kinds of triggers?
  • Repeating behavioral patterns is a way of your brain creating structure, efficiency, and making sense of things.
  • Rules that you had as a child can become triggers for you as a parent if your children do things that would have been breaking those rules. It creates a sense of something being wrong.
  • Addressing your triggers and healing yourself is about understanding we are all deserving of love and compassion.
  • Awareness is the first step. Building in self-regulation is the second step.
  • Learning mindfulness and breathwork is vastly beneficial in healing.

Rebecca dives deeper into the biggest marriage mistakes, and how you can overcome them.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • Mistake: Having contempt for your partner. They deserve respect. Instead of personal attacks, express your needs and what you would like instead.
  • Mistake: Criticizing your partner. Learn to complain without blame. Remove “always” and “never” from your vocabulary. Express the need, don’t attack character. On the other end, do not go on the defense.
  • Mistake: Stonewalling- the 4th Horseman of Divorce. Shutting down and not communicating when you run into issues with your partner. Again, communicate your needs, even if that means needing a break before discussing an issue. Make time to have a conversation.
  • Mistake: Expecting your partner to read your mind. Instead of feeling disappointment and resentment when you partner does not act in the way you expected, make your needs and wants known.
  • Mistake: Not prioritizing your marriage. When you put everything in life before your marriage, it will be neglected and suffer. Make your relationship a priority, or it will wither.
  • Mistake: Loving your partner the way YOU want to be loved. Revisit the 5 Love Language. Learn what your partner wants to feel loved.
  • Mistake: Repeating negative marital patterns. Pay attention to your arguments. Is there a recurring theme? De-brief after a fight when tension has died down. How could you have done it better?
  • Mistake: Thinking that little things don’t matter. Little things build up and make a big impact in the end. A smile, a touch, a small moment together will build up your marriage over time.
  • Mistake: Always needing to be right. Does being right and winning the battle all the time really matter? How do you create a win for BOTH of you.
  • Mistake: Talking and not listening. Give your focus and attention to what your spouse is saying and LISTEN, instead of thinking about what you are going to say while they are talking. Don’t make assumptions before you know the whole story.
  • Mistake: Not protecting your marriage. Do not let things into your marriage- whether it is a person or a thing- that will hurt your marriage.
  • Mistake: Being secretive in your actions. Don’t do or say anything that you would NOT say in front of your partner.

Episode 237: Change The Dance

26 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week we are talking about changing patterns and behaviors. Get rid of the ones that don’t serve you and create new ones that do!

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • Hear about a recent incident with the girls that caused Rebecca to revoke an activity that was planned. How did she and Seth handle it and stay calm and grounded in a tense situation?
  • Sometimes when one parent is reactive to a situation, it might trigger the other parent to side with the kid, when they should be a calm, united front.
  • Learning to be flexible. It is ok to take time to give your kid an answer. You don’t need to say yes or no right away. This is an exercise in not constantly giving in when your child pressures you.
  • Don’t escalate a situation in your own brain by overanalyzing the situation with things like, “Why is she doing this to me?” “I’m not raising my kid to act this way?” Lose the “how dare they” mentality.
  • Lean on your partner as a support to get you through moments when you have a difficult time dealing with certain behaviors.
  • Celebrate your successes and repeat them!
  • It is ok to give yourself a time out to keep yourself from escalating a situation.

Episode 230: No One Saw It Coming

40 min
View

Marci Glidden Savage is the CEO of a family-owned packaging supply company. After experiencing the catastrophic impact of suicide twice, Marci emerges as a fierce proponent for eliminating the social stigma attached to mental illness which keeps many individuals battling depression and anxiety from seeking help. Marci lives in Southern California where she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling and endless hours of genealogy research.

Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Marci Glidden Savage

about mission to shed light upon and destigmatize mental health issues and how those who have lost loved ones to suicide can learn to cope in the aftermath.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • Marci lost her husband of 34 years suicide and no one saw the signs or knew that he was suffering inside.
  • Supporting her children in this time became her #1 priority.
  • Running her own business forced her to continue on through the grief and make sure things continued to run.
  • Marci found love and marriage again, only for it to happen once more.
  • Marci found she had to deal with people’s ideas and opinions of her husbands’ mental health and her ability to see the signs.
  • Some who suffer from anxiety and depression weave it into their very existence just to cope and never work on resolving their feelings or opening up to others.
  • There is a stigma in opening up about deep, depressive thoughts or anxiety. It affects their self-worth.
  • Men aged 55-65 have a higher rate of suicide. Their self-worth often ties into their success and ability to provide for their families. This is often the age they may feel like they have failed at these things.
  • The family is left behind to carry the burden of other’s narratives of what happened. They have to defend and explain, and justify their inability to prevent the death of their loved ones.
  • Her message to others: allow families to grieve as they would for any other death.
  • Personifying death can be a coping mechanism. Turn grief from an emotion into an entity that you can treat accordingly, allowing you to stop holding it inside.
