38 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: The Money Dance

  • Do you fight about money with your spouse? It is one of the most common points of contention in relationships.
  • Make sure you and your spouse know what kind of financial background they grew up with. Habits and expectations are founded here.
  • The stress of paying for college is a big trigger. Learn how Seth turned his parents’ stress over his college tuition into a positive.
  • Differing views on what is affordable and what is a need vs. a want.
  • Compromise. Compromise. Compromise. If one spouse is conservative with money and the other is not. Find a comfortable middle ground.
  • Your view on money needs to be centered in respect for your spouse. Respect will lead to more understanding on your personal finances, and hopefully less arguments.
  • Oftentimes, where you spend your money is where you place your values. What you spend money on is what you value most. Value your time over cooking? You probably order takeout a lot.
  • Save vs spend? Just because you can technically afford something, does that mean you should buy it? What returns would you have if chose to invest that money? Discuss with your spouse and see what would mean more in the end.
  • Schedule regular meetings to discuss your finances. You both need to have a good understanding of where you are and where you are going. Learn to be financial partners!
  • Identify your role in any financial problem and make a plan to address it.
  • Remember to stay calm, don’t blame, and be open minded to how your partner feels.

Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Lisa Chase about how to help our kids to have a successful school year.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • Organization is key! Have everything in its place and make sure your kid is on board and learn to take ownership of how things are done.
  • Don’t assume your kid knows what needs to be done, until they have established a routine. Ask questions that will clue them in to thinking about whether or not something is done or needs to be done.
  • Communication with your child’s teacher is a valuable tool for both the parent and the student.
  • Establish the expectation that you will check to see your child’s work is done, until they prove that they don’t need supervision.
  • Check in with your kid! How are they socially and emotionally?
  • Keep offering support and security to your child.
  • Take time to stop and listen when your child communicates with you.
  • Do you have a “difficult” child? Lisa says they are often her favorite students. Encourage that connection between child and teacher to help your child feel better understood.
  • Anxiety in our kids is different these days. Technology, phones, social media, etc. all contribute to overload in our kids. Make sure they have downtime with the family.
  • Social skills have been affected after the pandemic. How do we encourage our kids to become more social? Encourage in-person interaction.
  • Teach your child how to solve conflicts. Try role playing. Keep practicing social skills with your kids, no matter how old they are.
  • Balance unplugged activities with you learning more about what they do online.
  • Tips on improving your communication with the school

Episode 177 What Football Is Teaching Me

27 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: What Football Is Teaching Me

  • We are more motivated than ever to learn about the game of football.
  • The things we learn about in football are so applicable to life.
  • Persistency- want to improve? Be consistent and work toward improvement
  • Practice DOES make perfect- or at least it makes for improvement.
  • Change can be good! Sometimes overcoming your fear of the unfamiliar can turn out to be a great thing! Taking risks and trying new things can open new doors.
  • Being a part of a team or group is beneficial. Insist that your kids join SOMETHING.
  • Study of patterns- they do it in football, you can do it in life. There are patterns in everything. Evaluate the patterns in your life. Are they working for you? If not, what do you change?
  • Visualization to achieve results! Repetition in the brain and in your mind’s eye can help you to reach your desired goal.
  • The qualities necessary in a good team leader are the same qualities necessary to be good at your job and a good parent.
  • Just as you need to make adjustments every day in football, you need to make adjustments in your expectations and your actions every day.
  • Work as a team! Working together and allowing others to help you will always make you a better competitor and better in life. Embrace your “team” whether it is family or friends.

Episode 175: It’s OK To Quit

23 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: It’s OK To Quit

  • There is a difference between an activity for a child where they are passionate and internally motivated to do and an activity where they rely upon nagging to get to every single time. If it isn’t something they are excited about, it is ok to quit!
  • Trust your instincts! They are often right. If you feel like it isn’t something to stick with, it may be best to let them quit.
  • Listen to your child’s input. Are they unhappy about going? Are you unhappy taking them? Forcing them to go may not be the best option.
  • There is importance in teaching commitment and follow-through, but not at the expense of self-respect and self-care.

This week: Phases of Motherhood

  • Baby Phase: you are learning how to keep a tiny human alive- diapers, feedings, sleepless nights.
  • Preschool: adjusting to having your child away from and immediate family- can they make it without you?!
  • Elementary school- learning about your new community of parents and kids and teachers, maybe navigating returning to work.
  • Middle school- don’t underestimate your kids’ ability to handle this change and the challenges that come with it.
  • High school- activities can kick into high-gear! They are beginning to test the waters of independence; remember your child’s experience is not your experience. Do not put your past upon them. Driving and jobs are major milestones, too.
  • College- learning to let go. The range of motions is intense- excitement, fear, sadness, and joy. Your child is now able to make bigger decisions about how they want to live their lives.

  • Allow yourself to have all the feelings! Allow yourself grace as you figure it all out and how to juggle everything

Episode 171: Managing Mom Life

47 min
View

Julia Barbaro is a homeschooling mom of six children, wife, certified life and marriage coach and author. She is an integral part of the behind-the-scenes operations of her husband, Gino's, business ventures, including Jake & Gino and the Rand family of companies.

Julia was inspired to become a certified life and marriage coach after witnessing the power of coaching. She felt compelled to give back and motivate others to set goals, seek out their soul purpose, and ask what’s next in their life. Julia's passion is to empower couples to strengthen their mind, their communication, overcome obstacles, and seek clarity. Together, she helps them create a life plan for themselves as well as encouraging parents to guide their children to adulthood.

Julia is the author of “The Cannolis Exploded!” And “A Gelato Blast!” children's books about decision making and different paths we can take in life. Julia and her family live in St. Augustine, Florida where they enjoy the old city and the simple beach life.

Listen to this inspiring Whinypaluza episode with Julie Barbaro the keys to better communication in your family and your life, and how to navigate the life of a busy mom.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • Awareness of how we act and speak is the first tool for better communications. What do we want to communicate? How does the person with whom you are speaking communicate?
  • The way you react to someone else when you communicate affects future communications.
  • Awareness of thoughts before we act: is what you are thinking or feeling right? Think before you speak.
  • Gaining confidence in yourself by knowing no one has a perfect life, no matter how they might present it.
  • Know you are doing a good job. Whatever it is you are struggling with, come up with a plan that will get you where you want to be. Start with one step at a time.
  • Can journaling have a place in how you manage motherhood and life in general? The act of journaling can shift your thinking from emotional to rational and allow you to look at things and decide what is true and what is overreaction.
  • How does homeschooling fit into your life? It is a major decision to make with benefits that can be worth it for you and your family.
  • The importance of showing up, no matter what. We all have our challenges, and difficult moments to get through, but the struggle will build upon who you are.
  • Get evidence for the way you are feeling- is it true or imagined? This is one of the key components to successful communication with your spouse.
  • Having intention for a good marriage means actively working on it. If something is keeping you from it, ask yourself what it is that holding you back from doing the work and address it.
  • What works well for Julia and her husband while working together?

Episode 170 Mom Guilt

33 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Mom Guilt

  • Mothers carry an astounding amount of guilt around with them. I can’t keep up! I need to spend more time with my kids! I need to relax more! I need to clean the house! The list is endless.
  • Guilt can come from others thinking you have more, do more, are more than they do. We all have our own things going on. No one is perfect.
  • A common feeling of guilt is not being able to do everything you want and need to do on a daily basis. Learning to reframe your thinking can help. You likely ARE keeping up with what you have to do.
  • What can we do to cut back on the Mom Guilt?
  • Social Media- learn to use it correctly! It is a big contributor to our guilt or feelings of inadequacy. Learn to scroll by things that trigger these feelings. Social media is often a false look into people’s real lives. Use it for IDEAS and not comparison.
  • Stay true to your values! What is truly important to you? Learn to let go of what is not important or in alignment with your values.
  • Lean in on people who can help lift you up and support you and help you to relieve the guilt, rather than add to it.
  • Your reality is not equal to someone else’s reality. They may have an immaculate house, you may not. And that is OK. You are definitely NOT alone in that.
  • Identify the habits and triggers and work on changing them.
  • What is it about your parenting style that adds to the guilt? What can you change to improve that?
  • Be realistic in what you can achieve. Insurmountable goals need to be reevaluated.
  • Check in with your family! What do they see and feel? You may find you are doing better than you thought!
  • Most importantly, work on gratitude for what you have and what you are able to do.

Episode 169 Positive Thinking Muscle

22 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Positive Thinking Muscle

  • Sometimes we find ourselves sinking into a negative place. How do we pull ourselves out?
  • We can create self-imposed pressure to be positive and happy all the time, which can cause uncomfortable feelings. Use this as motivation to change.
  • Don’t forget self-care! Taking care of yourself will set you up for positive thinking.
  • Being aware of your negative thinking and habits is the first step in creating change.
  • Find an outlet for the negative thoughts- brain dump or “get out the yuck” by talking, journaling, praying. Whatever outlet you can find to let the thoughts go will help immensely.
  • Become your own friend! Treat yourself and talk to yourself the way you would to your best friend.
  • Building neural pathways happens the more you repeat an action or way of thinking. Positive thinking is a muscle you can build by repeating the way you think and embedding positive thinking in your neural pathways.
  • Flex you positive thinking muscles daily. Just like doing daily pushups, they get easier the more you do them.
  • Getting your negative thoughts can take some push to get out. Practice moving past your comfort zone.

Episode 165 Summer Pressure

30 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Summer Pressure

  • School’s out, why are we feeling pressure? We can create additional pressure when we want to make to most of summer, with all the planning it entails.
  • When you isolate yourself in your thoughts of all that you “need” to do, you end up feeling frustrated and alone.
  • Plan before the day of! Asking spur of the moment what they want to do, will often not work well.
  • You don’t have to ask your kids what they want to do all the time. Sometimes just making the plans for them, or allowing them their own plans is enough.
  • How does Rebecca plan to break the pattern of summer pressure?
  • The pressure you feel is most certainly self-imposed.
  • Summer Fun is wonderful, but don’t forget the importance of downtime.
  • For bigger plans like a vacation- start early, and have discussion.
  • Prioritize! Make time for the important things on your list.
  • Make a list of what everyone wants to do this summer and make plans.
  • What does Rebecca feel about Summer Bucket Lists?
  • Remember not to compare and despair. Other families might be doing more than you. Use that to feel inspired rather than a failure.
  • Consider financial expenditures. There are lots of fun things to do that are free. You can indulge in regular things like coffee or nails, but limit yourself.
  • Be sure to recognize and appreciate the things you are doing right!

Episode 164 Summertime Organization

41 min
View

Melissa Stecher is the owner and creator of Hopeful Simplicity. In 2017 she reached her snapping point. As a mom, full-time employee, co-parent, blending families, some personal health issues, and still being asked all those 'at-home' questions like 'what's for dinner?' she broke. She was angry and tired all the time and knew that wasn't the person she wanted to be. This is when her family started swapping. They swapped bad habits for better ones.

Melissa started making her bed each morning just to feel like she was accomplishing something each day. They swapped harsh chemical products for natural options and the whole Home Team started cleaning. They even swapped unsuccessful organizing systems for compromised successes. In 2018 Melissa took a leap of faith in herself and got certified as a professional organizer. Now, not only do they get to save time, they save money and live less stressed lives while helping others find hope in their chaos and clutter.

Listen to this helpful Whinypaluza episode with Melissa Stecher for tips and tricks for staying organized in the summer when the kids are home from school.

  • Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
  • What you can do to get your kids to contribute to keeping the home tidy.
  • Ask “why” when something isn’t being done, and come up with a solution that works for each person.
  • What do we do with all the things that come home from school? What to keep? What to toss? Realistically, we can’t keep every single piece of art they make.
  • Designate a single location for archived items: one per category (art, grades, etch) one per kid, then organize them by date/grade.
  • Organization should be done seasonally. Winter things don’t need to be out during summer, and vice-versa. Individual bins that can be swapped from storage into your home when the season changes.
  • Organizing entertainment! Set goals for different activities: outside time, reading time, family time, etc. Build activities into the daily routine.
  • For younger kids, consider a system to spark activities. Write activities down and put them in a container so they can randomly pick something to do.
  • For family activities, consider finding things that will spark a conversation with your kids, even if it isn’t something YOU are interested in.
  • Mothers often contribute to their own stress by putting all the “to dos” on their own shoulders. Try shifting from “I have to, I need to” to “we have to, we need to.” Are certain things really “your job?”
  • Learning to cede control to others is a game changer. Things don’t have to be done your way all the time. Things are being done for the family, and each person has a different way to do things.
  • Visual reminders can be the best support system or Home Teams: Calendars, Schedule Page, White Board- whatever works for you.
  • What other organizational leaders inspire Melissa?
  • Organization can create a sense of control over your world and home.
  • What can we do to prepare for back to school?
  • Start with school supply checklists, clean out old schedules and plug in new ones.
  • Back to school is a good time to update your “habit page,” or assigned tasks for each member of the household.

Episode 163 Your Brain Lies To You

36 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Your Brain Lies To You

  • Have you ever stopped to think about all the things you say to yourself throughout the day?
  • We are oftentimes very critical of ourselves, without really realizing it. What can we do to change the conversation?
  • Do you have ANTs?! Automatic Negative Thoughts and why they are important to get out of your brain?
  • Neural pathways are created when we have the same thoughts over and over. Bad thoughts will repeat themselves. The good news is that good thoughts can repeat themselves, too.
  • Some of the most common negative thoughts in adults. They are often the same in our children.
  • Becoming aware of these thoughts is the first step to overcoming them.
  • The four main categories of cognitive distortions: personalizing, filtering, catastrophizing, and polarizing. What do they all mean, and what impact do they have?
  • How do we avoid these distortions? Combatting negative thinking starts with awareness. Question yourself when you say negative things. Is what you are saying accurate? Do you have facts to support them? What you say if you were talking to a friend? What would a friend or your spouse say to you?
  • Sometimes the things you are most critical of are the traits others love about you.

Episode 162 Summer Sanity Tips For Parents

24 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Summer Sanity Tips For Parents

  • Do what works for YOUR family; don’t compare yourself to others.
  • Adjust your expectations, and verbalize them to your family.
  • Balance scheduled activities with scheduled downtime.
  • Don’t fall into the trap of thinking everyone else’s lives are perfect based on what they share on social media, and yours is lacking. What people put out on social media is not the full reality of their lives.
  • If you find yourself feeling jealous of someone, focus on finding out how you can make it happen for yourself.
  • Continue with your “me time.” Your mental and physical health still need this.
  • Summer goes fast! Make those plans.
  • Ask your family what is on their wish list for summer fun and make plans.
  • Get out of the house! Being cooped up inside can add to your stress. Getting out of the house is a good way to reset.
  • Everyone needs space. Make sure everyone has down time, by themselves.
  • Make sure you and your kids maintain their connections with others. Socialization is important, even if you have to push yourself to do it.
  • You can do this! You are doing a good job. Keep reminding yourself!

Episode 161 Improving Your Body Image

42 min
View

For over two decades, Wendie Pett has been motivating people to make fitness and good nutrition part of their daily routine. She teaches the balance of mind, body and spirit through her Visibly Fit™ wellness program. Wendie has a nationally syndicated television program that airs each week on the NRB Network, LIFTABLEtv, WLCN, and IBN Television. It has aired for over 9 years. Her television show also appears weekly on the Life Network For Women app.

Wendie is a full-time business owner, a naturopathic doctor, wife, mother, author, speaker, TV host, advisory board member for Christian Women in Media and part-time volunteer. Her business consists of whole-food/plant-based wellness coaching, emotional healing, personal online training, fitness planning, educational and motivational speaking, and creating new products/tools to assist clients along their wellness journey.

After a major injury to her shoulder, she resorted to body weight resistance exercises for strength and healing and hasn’t turned back to any other form of training since. She has helped countless others reach their fitness goals without ever compromising their joints, tendons, or ligaments - teaching that Your Body Is Your Gym™ and instilling new diet habits that have shown to reverse multiple diseases and allow people to get off medications.

Listen to this inspiring Whinypaluza episode with Wendie Pett about creating better mindset and habits to level up to your best life.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • Visualized Resistance- using mind/muscle connection to envision varying weights, working your muscles without being prone to injuries that can occur with heavy weights.
  • Wendie’s mission to guide women into the right mindset so they can take better care of themselves, allowing them to show up for their friends, family, and community in a more meaningful way.
  • Next Level Living- are you living your best life now, and if not, how can you?
  • R.E.A.C.H.: Release, Exercise, Affirm, Choose, and Heart.
  • Release- letting go of unhealthy emotions attached to certain habit.
  • Exercise- move more to feel better mentally, physically, and emotionally.
  • Affirm- changing your self-talk vocabulary to affirming and positive thinking.
  • Choose- the choices you make every day either take you closer to or further away from your goals.
  • Heart- where are you coming from in all that you say and do? Do you start in a place of forgiveness? Forgive yourself and others for falling short of perfection.
  • What you can do to create a shift to override old habits you wish to release.
  • Focusing on why you deserve to level up in your life and change your habits.
  • Mind/Body/Spirit- they are all intertwined. Mindset is key, the body follows, and spirituality is the foundation of it all.
  • Feeling WORTHY of all that we aspire to and receive.
  • How to make consistent healthy choices- Plan and build in accountability.
  • Moderation kills momentum- some people cannot handle things in moderation. Know yourself, and how you are going to react to indulging.
  • Toxic Hunger State- oftentimes our body craves things that indicate nutritional deficiencies, what your brain thinks it wants isn’t always what your body is asking for.

This week: Lessons Learned From This School Year

  • Recognizing the new level of independence in our kids. Letting out kids prove themselves to be capable and independent is a milestone for us all.
  • Don’t question your motherly instincts. Trust your gut and that you know what is best for you and for your kids.
  • High School is better than middle school! If you have a kid struggling to get though middle school, keep this in mind.
  • Friendships, activities, and connections are essential for our kids’ mental health. Push them to be involved and you will see they are happier and better off. Busy kids stay out of trouble.
  • Remember to be your own best friend! Treat yourself the way you would your best friend.
  • Mental Health Days? Yes! We all need them; don’t be afraid to use them.
  • Don’t be afraid to fight for your kids and what they need in school. Don’t push it off to someone on the PTA. Use your voice as a parent.
  • Our kids get so much more out of their education when they have teachers who make the effort to connect with them.
  • When kids are allowed to rise to the occasion and deal with an issue, it will build strength and character.
  • Volunteer options dwindle the older your kids get. If volunteering is important to you, do it when you can. The older your kids get, the more difficult it is for schools to get volunteers.
  • To balance the hectic schedule of school, kids need downtime and mindfulness and calm.

  • A birthday is the perfect time to reflect upon the year- what was great, what wasn’t; what do you want to do differently this year?
  • What makes her feel most loved on her birthday?
  • How have Seth and Rebecca worked to improve expectations and pivoting from the “let’s see what happens” approach to specifically asking for what she wants.
  • If you are unsure of what you want for your birthday, open it up for discussion with your spouse or family.
  • Rebecca credits joy in her life and how she presents herself to the world to a more youthful appearance.
  • The most important lessons learned last year: appreciating and taking care of her body, and being more present in life’s moments.
  • Why Rebecca has decided to view her kids’ leaving elementary school as her graduating with them.
  • The most important marital lessons for Rebecca in the last year. Don’t forget to put the time and focus in on your marriage!
  • The most important parenting lessons for Rebecca in the last year. Don’t take everything so seriously! She improves every year.
  • The importance of self-talk and doing it right.
  • What Rebecca has learned in all her interviews with marital and parenting experts on the podcast.
  • The best moments of the last year have been seeing the culmination of all the hard work she puts into getting her kids through all the activities and school.
  • What Rebecca hopes will be the successes of the next year.
  • What is the next big thing for Rebecca?
  • Remember that no one is perfect, despite what they project and show to the rest of the world. Everyone has his and her own struggles.

Episode 158 I’m Holding On

21 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week! As the end of the school year comes to a crescendo, we are all feeling overwhelmed, but the energy in our kiddos is palpable. Hang in there, moms, we are almost through it!

This week: I’m Holding On

  • We are all insanely busy with the end of the year activities, be sure to offer up your thanks and show appreciation to all those around you who support you and your kids in all that is going on.
  • The more you are involved in your kids’ schools, and the more kids you have, the more attached you feel. When your kids age out of elementary, it can be an emotional end.
  • With all the chaos, hold on to your sanity! But remember to hold on to your memories. They will be precious to you.
  • Be sure to take your hectic schedule hour by hour. What can you do now? When can you fit in a moment for yourself? Don’t forget to pace yourself and stop for a moment to slow yourself down.
  • If you have the flexibility in work to do so, be involved and attend these events. They are a unique time for you and your kids, that you and your kids will always remember.
  • Take care of yourself! Sunscreen! Hydrate! Eat! Sleep! Breathe.
  • Keep in mind that despite the chaos, it is good chaos, because our kids have not had these events in a few years.
  • Use your support network! Whether it is to help with events, or cover dinner and rides. Ask for help.

Episode 156 Crushing A Crazy Saturday

26 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Crushing A Crazy Saturday

  • For many parents, July can be crazy! Take it hour by hour, day by day, and try to remain calm.
  • Recognizing when you are in an anxious state when things are hectic. Visual and mental exercises can help you calm.
  • When the anxiety hits, STOP and employ the RE process: rewind, reset, refocus, replace, reframe, reflect, and rejoice. Practice it and it will become automatic.
  • Instead of getting into the rushed and angry mode, talk to yourself and go over why the things you are doing are good things. Smile and enjoy the journey.
  • Your anxious state initiates other states of being in those around you, that are not ideal.
  • We can’t do everything ourselves. We need a village. DELEGATE!
  • Rephrasing the way you talk about your day and what you HAVE to do to what you GET to do, will change the way you feel about things.
  • With your partner, try to be observant and recognize patterns of emotion in each other, and discuss how you can improve things together.
  • Be confident in your ability to get it done. You will find you are much calmer getting through hectic times. Practice makes perfect. Repeat what worked, stop what didn’t.

Listen to this special Whinypaluza episode with Rebecca and Seth Greene as they discuss the importance of good communication in your marriage and lessons they have learned along the way.

Episode 155 Better Communication In Your Marriage with Rebecca and Seth

  • Problems with “The List of Wants” and how sometimes monumental lists of wants can make your partner feel overwhelmed or as though they are falling short as a provider.
  • The impact of negative comments is 3x that of positive comments. Be sure to express gratitude for what you have and take baby steps when bringing up your want list.
  • Coming to the understanding that expressing wants does not equate to feeling as though you are unhappy with what you have. Finding the middle ground to communicate this is tricky, but important.
  • The Housewives Effect- does your husband feel like you are developing unrealistic expectations when watching shows about extravagant living? Is it entertainment or aspirational?
  • Does your partner have literal thinking? Do you understand the difference when your partner expresses a want as an example or as a specific request?
  • The importance of having goals, and being clear about your realistic expectations about achieving them. Discuss your work goals, your personal goals, your couple goals, and your family goals.
  • Learning your partner’s “language” is key to better communication. How do they process information? How do they respond to different ways of presenting information? Do they do better with a plan and timeline? Do they do better with vision boards? What kind of communicator is your spouse?
  • Learning about and growing with your spouse is a journey that never ends. Be sincere and be proactive and you will find the rewards worth it!

27 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Addressing The Shootings

  • Anxious parents have anxious children, so be sure to manage your emotions and reaction to sensitive events. How do you make yourself feel safe, so your kids can feel safe?
  • Basic safety considerations: be aware of your surroundings at all times, have exit plans in mind, make sure you are able to hear and see what is happening around you.
  • It is ok to disconnect from the news and social media. Overwhelm is real. It is OK to TURN IT OFF, or just keep scrolling.
  • Gauge The Age: what subjects and information are appropriate for your child’s age and personality? Be careful to not overshare, which leads to them feeling overwhelmed or scared.
  • Getting comfortable with lockdown drills. They are frightening, but necessary.
  • Approach your kid with difficult topics by saying “you don’t have to talk about it, but I’m here if you want to.”
  • Don’t assume you know what your kids are talking about, and be sure to ask clarifying questions. Encourage THEM to ask questions when something makes them uncomfortable or confused.
  • Ask questions to your school about safety plans. Encourage your kid to ask your kids about the school’s safety plan. Never assume.
  • Make change! Speak up and DO something. Action feels better and does more than talk.
  • Even when you think your kids can’t hear you, they often can. Thin walls, nosey kids, they often can hear private conversations, so be sure to save the heavy stuff for when you know they are not home.
  • Arrange for someone outside of the home to be a safe person to talk to. Sometimes they will be more open with people who aren’t their parent.

Episode 153 No Longer Burned Out On Busy

52 min
View

Andrea Cairella, LPCC, is a psychotherapist, consultant, speaker and international best-selling author of No Longer Burned Out on Busy. Andrea is founder and CEO of Andrea Cairella International and has served as an advisor to innovative entrepreneurs, CEO's, Fortune 500 leaders, corporate professionals, and mothers seeking a thriving life - work balance. She is the creator of the CARE Approach™ and The Feminine Freedom Method™, two methodologies which support women leaders in all dimensions of life.

Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Andrea Cairella reclaiming your authentic self as a woman and finding inner calm.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • An early encounter with her high school counselor inspired her to go into therapy.
  • The innate abilities and gifts that women have (nurturing, growing, etc) are often at odds with the established structure which tend to be masculine (check off the list, get it done, etc). This makes work-life balance difficult.
  • The natural rhythm of women (based on the lunar cycle and seasons) is more about creation, integration, and reflection.
  • Operating on a high level of intensity can be unproductive for many women.
  • The parasympathetic nervous system and how to navigate and integrate the energy of women and men.
  • Life cycles are important to honor. Birth and death are represented in life with changes and growth, it is imperative to move through these stages in order to be prepared and able to move to the next step.
  • The mind is faster than the body, so it is important to slow down and allow your body a chance to catch up.
  • Understanding your inner peace is the way to be clear on what you want and what you need.
  • Transcending the system and setting your own boundaries- taking back your power.
  • Going from full-throttle to slowing down is a process. It will take time and effort.
  • Think of harmonizing rather than balancing, when trying to do it all.
  • Can you recognize the difference between your energy and someone else’s that you are responding to and resonating?
  • When a woman honors her time and her boundaries, she reclaims her power.
  • Don’t dismiss your strength when you find yourself struggling.
  • Learning to honor your own energy is beneficial for your children to learn early on.
  • Start with the relationship you have with yourself, and it will improve the way you interact with the rest of the world.

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! As an extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: You Are Not A Failure (I Promise You)

A moment of reflection on the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. We at Whinypaluza want to express our deepest sympathies to the families and community of Uvalde and Robb Elementary. We also want to express our wholehearted gratitude to educators all over the country who protect our kids every day. Thank you.

This episode:

  • Feeling overwhelmed and like a failure is a very common theme amongst parents.
  • Remember to cut yourself a break! We all forget things, do not beat yourself up.
  • The list of things we use to justify our feeling of failure is unrealistically long. STOP.
  • How do we shift our thinking from being hung up on what we didn’t accomplish, to what we have accomplished?
  • We can all take wisdom from the quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Do not compare yourself to others. You will always feel you fall short.
  • Start recognizing your inner voice and find a way to engage and rewind. Reset how you talk to yourself. Be proactive, not reactive.
  • Bring yourself from emotion to logic.
  • Cognitive distortion- it is easier to think bad things about ourselves. We have to actively work on saying and thinking positive things about ourselves.
  • How do we set ourselves up for success and feeling good about ourselves?
  • Write it down! Getting thoughts and lists out of your head and paper is very therapeutic.

Atluri hosts a popular podcast, “Responding to Life: Talking Health, Fertility, & Parenthood,” where she interviews guests on their inspiring responses to life’s challenges. Her parenting mindfulness expertise and fertility advocacy work has been featured in the L.A. TimesMotherly, MindBodyGreen, The Bump, Prevention, Well+Good, and Woman’s Day. She is the author of Mindfulness Journal for Parents, and the forthcoming 5-Minute Mindfulness for Pregnancy: Simple Practices to Feel Calm, Present, and Connected to Your Baby (Spring 2022).

  • How often a day should you practice mindfulness? Remember to start with small, attainable goals.
  • A great way to start meditation is to build it into your day.
  • The coping strategies of mindfulness are very powerful and useful tools for children.
  • Set an example to normalize mindfulness and meditation so your children will be willing to try the same strategies to calm themselves.

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: My Love Letter to Elementary School

  • After 10 years, Rebecca attends her LAST elementary school PTA meeting, which naturally initiated some reflection.
  • The Greene Family has been fortunate to have their kids in the same district and elementary school since day one.
  • Being a stay-at-home mom left a small void in her life, which she filled by volunteering for the PTA.
  • Volunteering for school is so important in feeling connected to the school and your kids’ lives outside of the home. It also adds value to your own life by making social connections.
  • The era of Covid has changed the landscape of school events, and newcomers have never experienced pre-Covid activities.
  • When volunteering, be sure to set your boundaries. Will you volunteer at one school or multiple schools? Will you be on the board of the PTA at one school, or multiple schools? Know your limits and stick to them.
  • Your child’s success heavily depends on the home to school link. The more you get to know your kid’s teachers and principal, the better your communication will be in order to get the most out of your kid’s education experience.
  • A bond is built with teachers who have each of your children as they progress through school.
  • Connecting with other mothers is a very valuable thing as a mother of children of any age.
  • After 10 years, Rebecca values the skills she has gained by being on the PTA.
  • How do we help our kids adjust to the transition from elementary to middle school? Focus on the gains rather than the losses, and let them know they will have support as they learn the ropes.

24 min

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Mother’s Day

  • If you tend to feel disappointed on Mother’s Day, try telling your family what you want. Have a discussion about what you can do together.
  • Navigating Mother’s Day meals- what do you want to eat? Where do you want to be?
  • What is the #1 thing you wish for Mother’s Day? Is it sleep? Being alone? Is it not cooking or cleaning? Is it a gift? Is it time spent with family? Hone in on just a couple of expectations. No one needs an all-day extravaganza.
  • Be clear about what you want, but open it up to compromise. Want to go for a walk? Have the kids decide where.
  • Is laying around all day realistic? No. It is ok to do a few menial tasks. Set yourself up to NOT be disappointed.
  • Mother’s Day is a great day to have the family pitch in for cleaning up!
  • If it within your budget, consider a cleaning service as a Mother’s Day gift!
  • No one wants to be disappointed on Mother’s Day. Don’t be afraid to tell your family what you want. You do so much for your family, they WANT to make you happy. What do you have to lose?
  • As in all things, in all relationships, communication is key! Have realistic, clear expectations and be sure to express them.
  • Moms will ALWAYS love handmade gifts from their kids.
  • Remember: Mother’s Day is about feeling loved and appreciated.

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week! Rebecca talks about the 15 lessons she has learned so far in 15 years of motherhood.

This week: Lessons In Motherhood This Year

  • Shift the focus on yourself and how you react. This is what you actually have control over.
  • You will continue to make mistakes. Being a good mom means always working on being better, not being perfect. Think of it as leveling up.
  • Take a step back. Learn to recognize when to let your kids handle their own problems and responsibilities. Stepping in when it isn’t good enough for you undermines their ability to learn how to manage themselves.
  • Your kids will always need you. As they become more and more independent, they still need you to love them and to be there.
  • Don’t underestimate your kids, and what they are capable of. Give them the room to grow into themselves.
  • You can’t be everywhere, all the time. As much as you want to be at every even for every kid, you need to choose and you need to allow others to be there.
  • You can’t volunteer for everything. Volunteers ARE needed, but don’t sacrifice your time when it is needed elsewhere in your personal life.
  • Everything doesn’t have to be perfect all the time. Again, give your children the agency to take control of learning how to do things.
  • It is ok for your kids to be upset. It is normal and you need to let your kids feel the full spectrum of feelings. Learning to cope with uncomfortable emotions is important.
  • Listen more and say less. Embrace “less is more” when it comes to communication. Sometimes being brief and concise is better.
  • Focus more on the good in your kids, than the bad. Look for the good behavior and be their cheerleader. You will always see what you look for. If you look for bad, that is all you will notice.
  • Your child’s life is theirs to live, not yours. Allow some agency for your kids to choose their activities, interests, friends, career, etc.
  • The importance of one-on-one time with each of your kids. Learn to balance the time you give to each of your children. Give your time, even if it is only 15 minutes a day.
  • It is ok to force family fun. Oftentimes you will always get a “no” if you ask, so sometimes they need a nudge. Once they are out, they usually have a good time.
  • Every stage of motherhood is exciting. Instead of mourning the passage of time, embrace the great privilege you have to witness every milestone.

  • The shift in Rebecca’s body image was inspired by wanting better for her children. The change starts with you, and your children reap the benefits.
  • Changing the relationship you have with food and exercise starts with viewing them differently. Food is not good or bad. Exercise is not a “have to” it is a “get to.”
  • There will never be perfection, only progress.
  • Learning to see yourself with “kinder eyes.” Start to talk to yourself differently. Your kids will pick up on how you talk about yourself.
  • Body image is NOT limited to girls. Boys have just as much personal criticism.
  • Scars reflect upon a journey. What do you think of when you look at yours?
  • Teaching your children how to talk to themselves is only half of the battle. Being a better example is the other half.
  • Changing your coping skills will help your children learn better skills for themselves.
  • Learning to appreciate the body you have and your good health. Fuel yourself with positive thoughts about your body, and appreciation for all that it can do.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone has some kind of body image issue that likely effects them equally.

Episode 143 Stress Free College Admissions

54 min
View

Anne Marie Comaratta is a mother of two, a strong widow, a long-time educator, and a founder of Stress Free Admissions. As an independent college consultant, she works with high school students and their families as they navigate college admissions. From helping students choose schools to creating dialogue between parents and kids about finances, from polishing college essays to helping students select teacher recommendations, Anne Marie’s services are intended to take the stress and anxiety out of the college admissions process.

Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Anne Marie Comaratta about the college admissions process and how to make it manageable and virtually stress-free.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

  • How Anne Marie’s education background in primary school lends itself to her ability to help parents and children plan for the college admissions process.
  • Anne-Marie’s services cover choosing a school, coursework, essays, and applications.
  • Anxiety can be overwhelming for both parents and kids when trying to decide on college plans, or even not going to college.
  • Parents can often equate getting accepted to an ivy league school with success as a parent or future guarantee of success for a kid. Selective schools do not guarantee success as an adult.
  • The pressure of life as a high school student is enough without adding the stress of choosing and applying to school. Anne Marie helps you to focus in on one thing at a time.
  • When is the best time to start meeting with an admissions advisor?
  • When do you start initiating test prep? What sports and activities do you need?
  • Testing requirements have changed. What do you need to know?
  • Are Test Prep courses worth the investment?
  • ACT vs SAT- what you should know.
  • The importance of your kid having some autonomy in deciding what they want to do.
  • A consultant can help bridge the gap between the parent and kid in communication about the college admissions process.
  • What if your child doesn’t know what they want to study?
  • Getting the most out of an admissions consultant.
  • The college essay: what makes a good one?

This week: Take The Vacation: Myrtle Beach Edition Vlog

with The Greene Family

When life gets hectic and overrun with an endless list of to-dos, it is hard to schedule a time to sit down, let alone plan a vacation. It is time to just take a vacation!

  • We all need downtime. Don’t wait, plan the vacation now!
  • Ask your friends and family where they like to go, especially for family vacations. Everyone likes something different; it is good to ask questions.
  • Compromise! Location, travel mode, activities- include everyone in the decision-making.
  • Think about what everyone wants to do. Do you want an active vacation? Do you want to laze around by the pool?
  • Don’t forget to take sun breaks. Sunburn and fatigue are no fun for anyone.
  • Don’t overschedule- make sure to allow for some downtime!
  • Think about how warm or cold it is going to be. What are your kids’ temperature limits?
  • Take notes! If you plan to return, jot down things you want to do next time. What worked? What didn’t?
  • Memories are more important than things. Take the vacation!

25 min
View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: Handling Criticism Better

  • How can we use criticism to grow and not always be hurt by it? Rebecca reflects on how she is learning to handle criticism better.
  • Don’t seek outside praise and evaluation- you are not always going to get it from those you want it from.
  • The more confidence you have, the less you criticize other people.
  • The effectiveness of letting someone know they have hurt your feelings without being angry when you do it.
  • Don’t be afraid to give yourself praise and validation.
  • Ask yourself “what is their intent?” when someone is criticizing you. Listen without being defensive.
  • Criticism is harder to take when it is unsolicited. It is wise to wait until you are asked.
  • Aside from your family, you don’t need to surround yourself with people who only criticize you.

  • Give the same grace and patience to your family that you would to others.
  • Keys to being a good leader: listen with empathy, have compassion, be vulnerable in a way that allows you to relate. Remember YOUR journey.
  • Creating change: establish an urgency in why you want to change: Why do you want it? What is the goal? How will you get there?
  • Resiliency comes from identifying what more you have in you to give.

View

Listen to this Whinypaluza Wednesday Live vlog episode with The Greene Family! An extension of the weekly blog, join Rebecca and her family on the live vlog, brought to you here in case you missed it last week!

This week: I Am Not My To Do List

  • It is all too easy to let your To-Do List take over your life.
  • When eliminating things from your list, what is non-negotiable? What do you value most?
  • Don’t be afraid to add fun and joy to your list!
  • Guilt will dissipate when you start to benefit from taking care of yourself. Make the time to make yourself a priority.
  • Stop. Recharge. Reset! Don’t forget to take breaks from the to-do list.
  • Balance: What is it and how do you achieve it?
  • Many things that “need to get done” don’t really need to get done right away.
  • Find ways to shake up monotonous tasks. Even if it means new laundry detergent!
  • The mistake of making your list too big. Limit tasks to relieve the sense of overwhelm and help you prioritize.

This week: Handling Our Intensity In Our Relationships

  • Patterns are common in many marriages- sometimes emotional intensity can cause conflict.
  • Heightened emotions can often be overwhelming for the other person. It can feel like aggressive or overwhelming.
  • Self-awareness of how you communicate is paramount.
  • Timing is everything. If one spouse is in a heightened emotional state, NOW is not the time to say “calm down.” Wait until they have calmed down and THEN discuss how it makes you feel.
  • The importance of initiating an emotional reset, sometimes many times in a day. Don’t let negativity seep into everything else in your day.
  • Emotional Unloading: Finding methods and tools to calm yourself before you have a conversation with someone, whether it is physical exertion, or brain dump.
  • Recognizing why your partner may not be engaging or responding. How can you have a conversation that allows them to engage comfortably?
  • Disclaimers can help! Let your spouse know if you just need to unload, and it isn’t personal. Set up the conversation to alert your spouse to what you need.
