This week, we sat down with country singer-songwriter Alana Springsteen for a raw, honest, and deeply personal conversation about growing up in the church, living as a people-pleaser, and what it actually takes to step into your own voice.

Alana shares how, for much of her life, she shaped herself around expectations, becoming who others needed her to be, inheriting a version of faith that did not fully feel like her own. It was not until she started getting honest, doing the inner healing work, and allowing herself to question everything that something shifted.

Through songwriting and healing, she did not just find her voice, she encountered a more authentic and grounded experience of God.

We also talk about one of the most relatable tensions so many people face, how to stay connected to family members who do not agree with where you have landed. Alana shares what it has looked like to hold love, compassion, and boundaries at the same time, and how to honor your growth without losing the people who matter to you.

Her upcoming album, I Hope This Helps, is a reflection of this journey, vulnerable, honest, and deeply human.

This episode is for anyone who is ready to stop performing and start living from what is true.

What does it actually look like to build something from nothing - fueled by friendship, faith, and a whole lot of courage?

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, Rachael and Jaisa are pulling back the curtain. No guest, no script -  just the two of them settling in for an honest, heartfelt conversation about the journey behind this podcast and the ways it has changed them both.

Jaisa opens up about a deeply moving experience on spring break - celebrating her son's eighth birthday after three years of navigating childhood cancer, and the breathtaking signs from God that reminded her that her prayers had truly been answered. From cranes circling a boat in the Dominican Republic to a rainbow appearing over her kids playing in the mud, this is experiential faith at its most real and most beautiful.

From there, Rachael and Jaisa reflect on how Spirit Outspoken was born. A casual comment from Rachael's husband that somehow landed like a divine download, two women who each abandoned their own paths to answer a calling they couldn't ignore, and a wine-fueled planning session that almost got them into serious trouble right out of the gate.

They get honest about the fear of being judged, what it's like to deconstruct your faith publicly, the moment they discovered the Gnostic Gospels, and why certainty might actually be the enemy of genuine spirituality. They also talk about what it means to do this work as best friends -  the communication, the yin and yang, and why their friendship always comes first.

This episode is a beautiful reminder that you don't have to have it all figured out to show up. You just have to be willing.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Signs, synchronicities, and God speaking through the unexpected
  • The real origin story behind Spirit Outspoken
  • Faith deconstruction and reconstruction in real time
  • Why certainty shuts down spiritual growth
  • What it's like to question Christianity publicly and catch heat for it
  • Doing purpose-driven work with your best friend

If you're newer here, this is the perfect place to start. If you've been with us from the beginning, welcome back. We've missed you.

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, Jaisa and Rachael sit down with Juan Galan Politi, Instagram influencer and co-founder of the Mystic Misfit Society, to explore his profound spiritual awakening and transformation. Juan opens up about his shift from an ego-centered identity to a life guided by the teachings of Yeshua (Jesus), and the experiences that catalyzed that change.

We dive into his journey with plant medicine and how those experiences expanded his perception of reality, spirituality, and the nature of consciousness. Juan shares how these moments became a turning point, inviting him into a more integrated, embodied understanding of faith.

One of the most fascinating parts of this conversation is Juan’s innovative AI-generated template, a tool designed to help people read the Bible through a multidimensional lens. By weaving together scripture with insights from quantum physics, science, and mysticism, this framework offers a fresh, intellectually grounded way to explore the teachings of Jesus.

If you’ve ever felt torn between science and spirituality, if you’re curious about expanded states of consciousness and their role in faith, or if you’re looking for a deeper, more expansive way to understand the message of Jesus-this episode will open your mind and invite you into a broader perspective.

In this special bonus episode,  Rachael and Jaisa are joined by Candice Rasa of Rasa Healing for a powerful, live channeled Akashic Records reading.

Together, they explore what it truly means to take responsibility for your reactions, recognize the repeating patterns in your life, and understand how those patterns may be tied to deeper soul lessons and karma. This conversation invites listeners to release the need to control or change others, and instead shift into a space of awareness, acceptance, and personal alignment.

As the reading unfolds, the discussion expands beyond the personal and into the collective-reflecting on what’s currently happening in the United States and how we may be revisiting old patterns on a larger scale. Through this lens, Candice, Rachael, and Jaisa explore how staying rooted in love, truth, and your highest vibration can become a powerful response to both personal and collective challenges.

This episode blends spirituality, self-awareness, and real-time insight from the Akashic Records to offer a grounded yet expansive perspective on growth, healing, and navigating the world today.

In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Spirit Outspoken, hosts Rachael Loney and Jaisa Engasser sit down with their mentor, friend, and licensed therapist, Candice Rasa of Rasha Healing, an intuitive Akashic Records practitioner who has profoundly impacted both of their lives.

For those curious about what the Akashic Records are and how they can support mental health, this conversation offers both spiritual insight and clinical perspective.

Candice recently completed an in-depth research study examining the psychological effects of the Akashic Records as a healing modality, comparing outcomes to traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The results were both compelling and thought-provoking, opening the door to a deeper conversation about the intersection of science, spirituality, and transformation.

What if understanding your deepest fears could unlock greater compassion for yourself and everyone around you?

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we sit down with Enneagram teacher Ashton Whitmoyer-Ober to explore the Enneagram, an ancient personality system that reveals the hidden motivations behind human behavior.

Unlike personality tests that simply describe traits, the Enneagram focuses on the core fears and desires that drive our actions, offering powerful insight into how we respond under stress, where we naturally grow, and why we show up the way we do in relationships.

Throughout the conversation, Ashton walks us through the nine Enneagram types, explaining the unique motivations, patterns, and growth paths associated with each type. This framework can become a powerful tool for self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and personal growth, helping us better understand both ourselves and the people in our lives.

We also explore how recognizing our Enneagram type can create greater empathy and compassion, since it reveals the unseen fears and coping strategies shaping human behavior.

Whether you're completely new to the Enneagram or already familiar with it, this episode offers a thoughtful introduction to one of the most powerful tools for self-discovery, personal transformation, and understanding the deeper motivations behind our behavior.

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we sit down with Christine Hernandez to explore the incredibly advanced and intelligent Mayan civilization, their sacred system of timekeeping, and the cosmology that shaped their understanding of the universe.

The ancient Maya were master timekeepers, astronomers, and spiritual philosophers. Their system wasn’t about predicting your personality in a surface-level way,  it was about understanding your energetic design and your place within cosmic cycles.

We also explore the sacred practice of ceremonial cacao,  and how it can open the heart for healing, clarity, and transformation when approached with intention.

If you’re curious about indigenous wisdom traditions, sacred calendars, astrology beyond the zodiac, plant medicine, or spiritual transformation, this conversation will expand your understanding of what’s possible.

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we sit down with Pete Nunnally, Episcopal priest and author of Catching Hope: The Hidden Spiritual Wisdom of Fishing, to explore what it means to encounter God beyond the walls of the church.

Pete shares about his “wilderness church”  a sacred gathering in nature where worship happens under open skies instead of stained glass. Together, we discuss how God’s presence is revealed in rivers, forests, and wild spaces..

We also explore:

  • How fishing became a spiritual teacher
  • The future of the church in a shifting cultural landscape
  • How we can expand our understanding of traditional church doctrine without abandoning it.

If you’ve ever felt closer to God hiking a trail than sitting in a pew, this conversation will resonate deeply.

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we sit with the emotional weight of what’s happening in Minneapolis and across the United States - and what it feels like to be human in this moment.

Many people are carrying justified anger, grief, fear, and exhaustion as they witness violence, injustice and misinformation.  Rather than bypassing these emotions, we begin by naming them-because Jesus never dismissed human pain.

From there, we turn to Scripture to explore how we are called to respond spiritually in times of division and unrest. What does it mean to follow Jesus without surrendering our humanity? How do we hold anger without becoming consumed by it? And how do we love our neighbors-on all sides-without excusing harm or injustice?

This episode reflects on Jesus’ response to suffering, righteous anger, and power, and explores what it looks like to choose compassion, truth, and love as forms of spiritual resistance. We discuss seeing the image of God in every person, resisting dehumanization, and staying spiritually grounded when emotions are high.

This conversation is for anyone who:

  • Feels angry, heartbroken, or overwhelmed by current events
  • Is struggling with polarization and division
  • Wants a Christ-centered response that doesn’t minimize injustice
  • Longs to stay human, faithful, and anchored in turbulent times

What if astrology wasn’t something to fear, but a tool for deeper self-understanding and compassion?

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we’re joined by Debra Silverman, a psychologist turned astrologer with decades of experience.

For many who were raised in the Christian faith, astrology was often framed as off-limits or incompatible with belief in God. Together, we gently reframe that narrative, exploring astrology not as something that replaces faith, but as a language of personality and design that can deepen empathy, self-awareness, and understanding of others.

Debra shares how her background in clinical psychology and soul-centered astrology work together, offering insight into emotional patterns, the four elements, and why we’re wired the way we are. We also discuss how understanding our own birth chart - and those of our children - can become a powerful tool for conscious parenting, relational compassion, and releasing unrealistic expectations.

This episode is thoughtful, grace-filled, and expansive, especially for anyone who still loves God but is re-examining what they were taught about spirituality, astrology, and self-discovery.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Is astrology compatible with Christian faith?
  • Astrology as a tool for self-understanding, not prediction
  • Psychology, personality, and the four elements
  • How astrology can foster compassion instead of judgment
  • Using astrology as a lens for parenting and relationships
  • Trusting that God’s hand is present in every part of our design

Whether you’re skeptical, curious, or already exploring, this conversation invites you to approach astrology with openness, wisdom, and grace.

Today on Spirit Outspoken, we’re joined by Sean Collyns, a world-renowned psychic medium with a four-year long waiting list and author of Your Soul Is the Source of Your Power (releasing this March).

In this expansive and deeply comforting conversation, we explore what it’s truly like on the other side. Sean shares insights into the afterlife, collective oneness, and the divine energy that connects us all beyond religion, culture, or language. He reminds us that energy never dies and energy never lies.

We talk about how psychic ability isn’t reserved for a gifted few, but is something we all carry within us. Sean opens up about his own journey into mediumship and offers grounded, accessible guidance on strengthening our intuitive connection. Together, we explore how loved ones continue to communicate with us after they’ve passed, the continuity of the soul, reincarnation, and why love never truly ends,it simply changes form.

For anyone navigating grief, seeking reassurance, or longing for a deeper understanding of who we truly are beyond the physical body, this conversation offers profound peace, clarity, and comfort. Our hope is that this episode reminds you that your loved ones are always with you-and that your soul already knows the way.

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we’re joined by Zach Helton for an honest, expansive conversation about spirituality, curiosity, and what it means to follow Jesus without fear of exploration. Together, we unpack the pressure many Christians feel to have certainty and why releasing the need to “know it all” can actually deepen, not diminish faith.

Zach shares his personal experience studying Buddhism and how engaging another spiritual tradition unexpectedly enriched his spirituality and relationship with Jesus. We explore how learning from other religions doesn’t mean abandoning Christianity, but can cultivate greater presence, compassion, humility, and spiritual maturity.

This episode is for anyone navigating faith deconstruction, spiritual curiosity, or longing for a more embodied and expansive way of following Jesus - without shame, fear, or rigid dogma.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why you don’t need all the answers to be a faithful Jesus follower
  • How spiritual curiosity can strengthen, not threaten, faith
  • Zach’s experience studying Buddhism and how it shaped his spirituality
  • Exploring other religions without losing your Christian foundation
  • Letting go of fear-based faith and embracing growth

If you’ve ever felt drawn to explore deeper questions, but were told curiosity was dangerous, this conversation is for you.

This week Rachael and Jaisa explore how the AIDS crisis, conservative politics, and American Christianity combined to make homosexuality the moral issue of an era. They examine how “traditional marriage” in the Bible included polygamy and other forms never condemned by Jesus, and how the oft-quoted verses about marriage were actually responses to questions about divorce, not universal rules.

We also challenge the harmful “gay but celibate” expectation, showing how it robs LGBTQ+ people of the fullness of committed relationships while straight Christians are encouraged to pursue love, partnership, and family. Using the Fruits of the Spirit as a lens, we share data on the mental, emotional, and spiritual harm caused by non-affirming theology. Finally, we unpack arguments that homosexuality is “unnatural” or “gross,” revealing how these beliefs are cultural bias, not biblical truth.

Did the original Bible actually condemn homosexuality-or was that added later?

In this episode of Spirit Outspoken, we uncover the shocking history behind how the word “homosexual” entered the Bible for the very first time in 1946 through the Revised Standard Version and how scholars later admitted it was based on an outdated and inaccurate psychological definition tied to illegal sexual acts, not loving same-sex relationships.

We break down the original biblical passages that are still used today to condemn the LGBTQ+ community and reveal their true historical context-exposing how they were actually addressing:

  • Rape and sexual violence
  • Pederasty and child exploitation
  • Pagan temple rituals
  • Power-based sexual domination

-not consensual, committed same-sex love.

We also unpack how, even after the translation error was acknowledged and corrected, the damage had already spread-shaping future Bible versions, church doctrine, and decades of religious trauma.

If you’ve ever been told that being gay is a sin “because the Bible says so,” this episode will change how you see Scripture, translation, and truth forever.

In Part 2 of our powerful conversation with Pastor Jonathan Henderson of Grace Hill Church in Glendale, CA, we dive deeper into some of the biggest questions people of faith wrestle with: Why does God allow bad things to happen? Were we ever meant to fear God? And what does Scripture really say about Jesus’ finished work?

Jonathan shares a freeing and deeply compassionate perspective rooted in Scripture-one that reveals a God who never intended us to be afraid of Him. We unpack why “perfect love casts out fear,” why fear and love cannot coexist, and how misunderstanding the character of God has shaped fear-based theology for centuries.

We also explore Jonathan’s belief that Jesus’ work was spiritually completed before He went to the cross, and how the cross ultimately exposed the lies and violence of Satan-not the character of God.

If you’ve ever struggled with fear-based religion, questioned God’s role in suffering, or longed for a clearer picture of God’s love, this episode brings healing, clarity, and liberation.

In this powerful conversation, we sit down with Joash Thomas, author of The Justice of Jesus, to explore how colonization has distorted the heart of Christianity - and how reclaiming the original message of Jesus can bring healing, justice, and spiritual freedom.

Joash shares how empire, power, and privilege have shaped the Church, what it means to decolonize our faith, and how followers of Jesus can return to His true teachings of love, equality, and care for humanity.

We also dive into the differences between Eastern and Western Christianity, the role of mysticism in the early church, and why repairing our “lens of empire” is essential for spiritual growth today.

You’ll learn:

-How colonization impacted the Church’s theology and global mission

-What Jesus actually said about justice-and how it contrasts with modern interpretations

-How to recognize empire thinking in your own faith

Ways to return to the radical compassion and equality of early Christianity

This episode is for anyone ready to reclaim the authentic message of Jesus and explore what it truly means to live a faith that heals, not harms.

In this episode, we unpack "spiritual bypassing", which occurs when we try to “just trust God,” “stay positive,” or “have more faith,” instead of honestly facing the emotions God is trying to meet us in.

We talk about how Jesus Himself felt deeply - grief, anger, compassion, sorrow - and how He never rushed or minimized the emotional experience of being human. He wept. He prayed in agony. He felt disappointment and frustration. He didn’t bypass the hard. He surrendered inside of it.

So if you’ve ever been told, “just give it to God and move on” or “good Christians don’t feel that way”…and yet your heart was still breaking - you are not weak, you are not lacking faith, and you are not alone.

In this episode we explore:

  • What spiritual bypassing looks like in Christian culture
  • The emotional life of Jesus and what it teaches us
  • Why true faith requires honesty, not pretending
  • The difference between surrender and spiritual avoidance
  • How embodiment honors the way God created our nervous system + emotions
  • Practical ways to feel your feelings with God, not away from Him

Healthy spirituality doesn’t disconnect us from our bodies and emotions - it helps us bring them to God with honesty and trust.

In this episode, we dive into one of the most thought-provoking questions in modern faith. We explore how devotion to Scripture can sometimes replace a living relationship with the Divine, and how even something sacred can become an idol when it’s placed above love, intuition, and the teachings of Jesus.

In this episode, we dive into:

  • The surprising history of biblical inerrancy and how it became a modern doctrine
  • Signs of idolatry - when faith becomes rigid, judgmental, or fear-based
  • What a balanced, spiritually alive relationship with Scripture looks like
  • How historical context and translation have shaped our understanding of the Bible
  • Our personal experiences breaking free from dogma and rediscovering divine connection

This conversation isn’t about rejecting Scripture-it’s about reclaiming it as a beautiful, useful resource that leads us back to the love and teachings of Jesus. We invite you to move from fear to freedom, from literalism to living wisdom, and from blind belief to embodied faith.

In this episode, we’re unpacking why forgiveness is actually one of the most selfish acts you can do. We don’t mean selfish in a bad way, we mean it’s life-giving for YOU. When we forgive, we release the weight of resentment, open ourselves to peace, and allow God to handle the justice part.

We talk about:
- What Scripture really says about forgiveness
- Why forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation, or dropping your boundaries
- The physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of letting go
- How choosing forgiveness frees you from what no longer serves you

We’ve both wrestled with forgiveness in our own lives, and we know how hard it can feel. But we also know the freedom that comes when we finally let it go and trust God with the outcome.

If you’re ready to release the hurt and step into wholeness, this conversation is for you. Hit play and join us as we explore how forgiveness isn’t about excusing others—it’s about setting yourself free.

Episode 34 - Power, Politics and the Bible

44 min Transcript
Open

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the complex history of how the Bible was formed. We explore the role of Emperor Constantine, the Council of Nicaea, the early church council that made high-stakes decisions about which texts would be considered holy—and which would be banned or forgotten.

You’ll learn how early Christian leaders navigated political pressures, theological disagreements, and the need for religious unity in a fractured empire. We’ll also touch on the Gnostic Gospels and the socio-political reasons why some writings didn’t make the cut.

Whether you’re a believer, a seeker, or just curious about the Bible’s backstory, this episode offers a thought-provoking look at the very human—and very political—forces that shaped the sacred.

In this episode, we open the door to the Gnostic Gospels—ancient, mystical texts that were once buried and banned, now resurfacing to challenge and expand our understanding of early Christianity, spirituality, and the Divine.

What are the Gnostic Gospels? Why were they hidden, and what truths do they hold for the modern seeker? Join us as we explore the spiritual wisdom found in these books and why reclaiming these forgotten voices could deepen your connection to your inner knowing, the Christ within, and the feminine face of the Divine.

What if everything you’ve been told about Mary Magdalene is wrong?

In this powerful episode, we dive into the suppressed truth about Mary Magdalene’s life, legacy, and spiritual role in early Christianity. Far from being a repentant prostitute, Mary Magdalene was a woman of independent wealth, deep wisdom, and spiritual authority. We explore how recently uncovered early Christian texts—including the Gospel of Mary and other gnostic texts—depict her not as a sinner, but as Christ’s closest disciple, a woman who may have understood his teachings in ways others could not.

We also examine why her story was altered—how the early Church, in its effort to consolidate power, enforce hierarchy, and marginalize the feminine, deliberately recast Mary’s image and excluded her gospel from the official canon.

Join us as we challenge outdated narratives, reconnect with the divine feminine, and rediscover Mary Magdalene as a spiritual teacher, mystic, and leader whose voice was silenced for centuries.

Whether you're curious about hidden gospels, sacred feminine wisdom, or the true story of Christianity’s most misunderstood figure, this episode is a must-listen.
